Various analysis techniques are used to determine the nature of a large seismic event that was triggered by a mass blast in an underground mine. This event was recorded by surface accelerometer arrays whose output was doubly integrated using a stable filter to determine the dynamic displacements. The peak dynamic displacements during the blast were 0.09 mm, and during its latter stages, this blast induced a seismic event having a peak dynamic displacement more than ten times larger at 1.26 mm. Polarisation analysis, based on the complex covariance matrix, showed that the seismic event was caused by movement of a known underground fault, close to the blast, which radiated most of its release motion as a shear-horizontal (SH) wave. The change in frequency content with time for the blast and seismic event was initially determined using the Fourier-based reassigned S-method. This analysis showed that the large amplitude seismic event had frequency content significantly lower than that of the blast. Nevertheless, this Fourier technique still retains the problems associated with short time windows as well as the fact that most realistic signals are non-stationary. In order to eliminate such influences, the more recently developed empirical mode decomposition (EMD) was used to obtain the intrinsic mode functions (IMF) of the seismic wave propagation. The EMD vibration analysis showed that each IMF generally exhibited distinct frequency changes throughout the blast and a significant reduction in frequency throughout the subsequent event. It is shown that most of the energy of the seismic event is contained in IMF modes 2, 3 and 4 of the SH wave; the high-frequency first mode (IMF1) contains little energy. Since 1989 Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines has managed the Kalgoorlie gold operations of joint venture partners Normandy Mining Ltd and Homestake Gold of Australia Ltd. Current production from the Fimiston Open Pit is approximately 650 000 ounces per annum. The mine incorporates a multitude of narrow shear hosted, subvertical lodes, predominantly within Golden Mile Dolerite. Traditionally KCGM has used blasthole based grade control in the Fimiston pits. A single sample is taken from vertical production blastholes, drilled on ten metre benches. This process was improved with the addition of infill drilling along blasthole rows to provide additional samples across strike. However the limitations of adequately defining subvertical mineralised structures with vertical blastholes remain. In 1997 the first of two trial areas were drilled with close spaced, inclined Reverse Circulation (RC) drilling. These tests indicated that RC based grade control had the potential to provide significant advantages. These include:improved delineation of mineralised structures, particularly across strike; reliable short-term mine schedules based on the advance data available from drilling over three benches; and the angled RC drilling is capable of providing samples of near stope and stope fill material which often remains unsampled by blasthole drills due to the safety constraints around unstable underground openings. Based on the success of this initial work RC based grade control was gradually implemented across production areas commencing September 1998. Some of the many challenges faced include:development of effective procedures and systems for the planning, logging, interpretation and modelling of the RC data; obtaining adequate drill coverage due to mine scheduling constraints and restricted access around underground openings; requirement for integrated systems to handle either blast hole or RC data; and development of effective methods to evaluate the performance of RC grade control. RC based grade control is delivering significantly improved lode definition, grade estimation and subsequent ore classification.

Traditional methods for calibrating the most customisable forms of GyÆs formula for the prediction of sampling variances involve a large amount of experimental work. This work is often extremely sensitive to outlier treatment and often relies on assumptions. A general methodology called æthe consistency methodÆ, however, has proven efficient in guiding these critical steps and adding objectivity to these subjective tasks. After a quick exposition of its principle, it is shown how it can also be used to reduce the amount of experimental work when dictated by budgets.

Published information on technical and market developments in the uses of zinc tends to dwell very largely on two groups of uses of zinc - zinc coatings (mainly galvanising) and zinc casting alloys. These two groups account for two-thirds of primary zinc consumption. However, if total zinc consumption is taken into consideration, coatings and casting account for a little over half the total. Either way, the health - or otherwise - of these 'other' uses of zinc can have a substantial effect on the industry as a whole. The aim of this paper is to put the whole market picture for zinc into better focus, concentrating on the factors which can affect consumption in the 'other half' of zinc's markets: ò brass - the third most important market for zinc at around one million tonnes - responds to changes in the economic cycle. It has seen substantial changes in the balance between different forms of semi products, and, in Europe at least, some real market gains; ò zinc sheet - one of the original uses of zinc in Europe - has grown substantially in some countries, but remains almost unknown elsewhere; and ò zinc pigments and compounds are so numerous that - barring the substitution of zinc oxide in rubber - major overall changes in the market are unlikely. The paper examines these markets and assesses their potential and implications for zinc markets as a whole.

Technical measurements are an integral part of research and development of new technical devices. Now they are also an integral part of production too, especially as a part of quality control systems. More new problems started with they applications up, like storing and following preservation of big data files. Many problems are also with processing of the measurement results, especially to be up to standards of ISO 9000 normative. It includes basic data about the measurement (structured data) and measurement outputs (huge data streams). Using database systems looks as good idea, because of structured measurement data and they processing. They were developed more concepts of database measurement system support during the research project MSM 272300012. It was decided to develop specialised measurement systems, on the base of experiments and experiences with they use in operating conditions. It proved to be wrong to develop general system, because of compound operating and long response of the system. And it is not possible to use these systems for mass production systems. The problem of data storing is not as easy to be answered, because of dependence on used technical devices. During realisation the measurement system for gearbox noise measurement are data stored to the database, because used analyser system PULSE (Brnel and Kjµr Co) is open structure and can cooperate with other software systems. Anyhow the data streams are not longer (after compression) than the Memo data type, in practical use increases the data file too fast (about hundreds MB daily). Therefore we must include a special supervisory system for administration and creating data files to the system. Nevertheless the used system MS-Access supports data files up to 1 GB, for practical application is better if the file size do not exceed the capacity of CD-ROM disc.

The Skybolt is a new bolt concept, point anchored with resin in large diameter holes of specific sizes 38 mm and 45 mm. The new design achieves the optimum annular spacing required for mixing the resin anchor components which is essential for optimum resin bonding of the bolt to the surrounding rock. This paper explains the load transfer mechanisms between bolt/resin/rock, unique to this bolt concept. It compares the pull-out test results to those of paddle and expansion shell type bolts, and highlights the versatility of Skybolt over existing, currently used, rock support systems and the benefits mine operators can achieve when using the Skybolt.

The first thing to be aware of is that the warming effect of carbon dioxide is strongly logarithmic. Of the 3¦ that carbon dioxide contributes to the greenhouse effect, the first 20 ppm has a greater effect than the following 400 ppm. By the time we get to the current level of 384 ppm, each 100 ppm increment will produce only about 0.1¦ of warming. With atmospheric carbon dioxide rising at about 2 ppm per annum, temperature will rise at 0.1¦ every 50 years for the next couple of hundred years before the effect becomes minuscule. The warming of the 20th century, as the Earth came out of the Little Ice Age, was a consequence of short, high-amplitude solar cycles. A number of solar physicists have predicted that the next solar cycle, Solar Cycle 24, will be quite weak. Based on the correlation between solar activity and the EarthÆs climate, a temperature decline of 2¦C is predicted for the mid-latitude regions over the coming decade, equating to the experience of the Dalton Minimum. Anthropogenic warming due to carbon dioxide will not ameliorate this temperature decline. Increased atmospheric carbon dioxide is wholly beneficial due to itÆs fertilisation effect. Efforts to inhibit Australian carbon dioxide emissions are exactly wrong in science.

Rock formation at shallow depths is generally associated with complex geology consisting of many joints, fractures, bedding planes, etc. Fragmentation results from primary blasts in such strata are therefore significantly influenced by structural discontinuities. To evaluate the role of discontinuities, which is of great use in the design of blasts in such conditions, a two-stage investigation program was taken up. In the first stage, model scale tests were conducted with single and double holes with the strike of discontinuities parallel and perpendicular to the face. Later, field studies were conducted in a limestone mine and a coal mine. Blast patterns were modified based on the results obtained from model scale blasts. Secondary blasting was taken as a measure to assess blast performance in the field, whereas mean fragment size, fine and coarse fragmentation indices were considered as fragmentation measures in model scale tests. Model tests indicated confinement of explosive energy by the discontinuities surrounding blasthole. Crater shape and size were significantly influenced by the orientation of joints with respect to the face. Modified blast designs with decreased burden x spacing patterns resulted in improved fragmentation in the field. A reduction of about 12 per cent in explosive consumption was recorded with modified blast designs. Boulder formation was observed to decrease by about 79 per cent as well.

Running a successful reagent plant trial is not an easy task, especially when trying to achieve an incremental improvement in a highly variable process, such as flotation. Cytec aims to achieve one per cent recovery improvement with 90 per cent statistical confidence. Most concentrators experience large fluctuations in recovery and so the æmagicalÆ one per cent is difficult to detect. With the aid of statistical software, including REFDISTR (proprietary) and ECHIPR, Cytec have developed a unique approach to differentiate between daily operational variation and actual process improvement. This paper describes how Cytec runs a plant trial based on extensive laboratory investigation and detailed analysis of historical plant data using statistical techniques.

Northern Star’s Thunderbox Open Pit C-Zone cutback was designed to maximise extraction in a short life excavation; In fresh rock on the western wall this included 20 m to 30 m bench heights with 6.5 m to 10 m berm widths and a 90° pre-split angle. Rock mass quality in this area is generally fair to good, however, there are sections where the dominant foliation runs parallel with the designed pit wall, and more closely spaced, altered, foliation is present: these areas are difficult to predict and prone to failure. Stringent controls and monitoring were required in order to safely access below these areas, in particular the use of slope stability monitoring radar, Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs), re-entry procedures, visual inspections, drone inspections and day-to-day personnel awareness of the hazard. Robust and comprehensively planned remediation was also required after two significant slope failure events where long reach equipment and rope access techniques were utilised to remediate the areas in question safely, but also in a timely manner, such that expected production targets were impacted as little as reasonably practicable. This combination of rigorous risk management and well planned remediation resulted in a successful and complete extraction of the C-Zone cutback with no impact to operational safety.

Underground infrastructure is often a critical component of transportation and utility schemes. It is characterised by long design lives with limited access for inspection and maintenance. The exposure environment can be difficult to assess since it will often vary substantially between different locations in the same facility and with time during construction and in service. In addition, the specific demands placed upon underground infrastructure are not well covered by the exposure classes and other guidance given within current codes of practice. When problems occur they can be difficult to rectify and involve significant disruption.Given these substantial risks the prudent designer may adopt a systematic ‘durability planning’ approach which:· defines the environment and principal deterioration mechanisms for the various elements and construction materials,· predicts the design life for alternative durability enhancement options, and· recommends associated measures to be adopted during construction and in service.This paper describes the development of durability planning within Halcrow, giving examples of its use from its first implementation on tunnels under the Suez Canal in 1993 to recent projects in the Middle East and Australia. It seeks to demystify the process, identify shortcomings and speculate on its future development within the civil and mining sectors.

As part of a research program sponsored by Continental Copper and Steel Industries, Inc. (cos), investigations have been conducted by the Colorado School of Mines Research Foundation, Inc. to study the effect of high current densities on electrolytic processes. The importance of high current densities has long been recognized, particularly in the deposition of copper, and the results of considerable research on the subject have been reported in recent years (19 29 39). This is not surprising because, besides plant capacity, current density is the other major factor which will determine the process economics. In the production of electrolytic copper, current efficiency, steam consumption, number of cells, building area, metal inventory, cathode purity, and power consumption are all affected by current density. The ability to maintain a high current efficiency and satisfactory cathode purity while increasing the current density to twice or three times that commonly practiced could result in considerable saving of capital investment and reduce the operating cost per ton of metal produced. The optimum current density i.e., that current density of which production cost would be at a minimum, can be established from an analysis of the various inter- relating factors (49 59). A review of.all operating electrolytic plants (electrowinning and electrorefining) will indicate that most of these plants are operating at 50% or less of the optimum current density (6). One of the reasons for not using the optimum current density may be attributed to the fact that conventional electrolytic tank- house equipment does not perform satisfactorily at high current density operations. Various investigators (19 79 8) have attempted to overcome this limitation by modifying the design of the electrolytic cell, virtually unchanged since it was first introduced in the late 1800's. Previously, these attempts have not resulted in,a cell design suitable for commercial application. However, recently, a cell has been designed which performs efficiently under such conditions. Blasting techniques are widely used to fragment rock masses into smaller pieces. Numerical modelling is an efficient method employed by many researchers in the blasting field. It is difficult for a conventional continuum-based approach such as the finite element method (FEM) to model the rock fragmentation by blasting and the expansion work on the rock by explosive and its detonation products. In this paper, the particle blast method (PBM) was employed to model the behaviour of the detonation and a bonded particle model (BPM) was used to model the brittle material to be blasted. A mortar cylinder with a centrally placed hole for the explosive was modelled and the results were compared to the experimental data. The blast process from crack initiation to fragment formation was analysed. The influence of coupling ratio on fragmentation was also investigated.CITATION:Yi, C and Johansson, D, 2015. The Chatree deposit is located in the central portion of Loei Fold Belt, which extends from Lao PDR in the north through centralThailand to Cambodia in the south. Epithermal gold-silver mineralisation at Chatree occurs as veins/veinlets and stockworks with minor breccia in volcaniclastic and volcano-sedimentary rocks of andesitic to basaltic andesite composition and Permo-Triassic age. This preliminary oxygen isotope study mainly focuses on vein quartz of Au-Ag bearing mineralization (Stage 2) and a few samples of late Stage 4 quartz ¦ calcite veins. Quartz from Au-Ag bearing mineralisation has oxygen isotope values ranging from 8.1 to 12.3ë with the lowest values generally occurring at the deeper level (140 m below the surface). The late barren quartz ¦ calcite veins (Stage 4) tend to have higher oxygen isotope values ranging from 11.9 to 12.0ë. The oxygen isotope composition of the Chatree ore fluids were calculated at 250¦C, 300¦C and 350¦C based on homogenisation temperatures of fluid inclusions. The calculated oxygen isotopic composition of the Chatree ore fluid ranges between -1 and 6ë that overlaps with both meteoric and magmatic compositions. This shift in oxygen isotope compositions may relate to processes such as water rock-interaction and/or mixing of meteoric and magmatic fluids. It is interesting to note that the lowest quartz oxygen isotope values are spatially more or less confined to the prominent structures in the centre of the major ore zones. These structures may have been acted as conduits for higher temperature magmatic fluids. The quartz oxygen isotope values increase outwards from the centre of the main ore zones to the margin of the pits possibly due to mixing of magmatic fluids with lower temperature meteoric water. Whole rock oxygen and hydrogen isotope studies are in progress to investigate isotopic trends in the wall rock away from the ore zone. The systematic variation of oxygen isotopes in quartz from the mineralised veins and adjacent wall rocks could potentially be used as a vector to ore. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Adsorption tests have been carried out to elucidate the interaction mechanism between dextrin and sulphide minerals. Sulphides such as galena and heazlewoodite exhibit high affinity adsorption over the pH range that coincides with the iep of lead and nickel hydroxides, and is suggestive of chemical interaction. The adsorption behaviour with respect to the sulphides of copper is of the low affinity type, and follows a different pattern. The adsorption studies on graphite, support the chemical interaction mechanism, with the metallic impurities serving as adsorption centres. In conformity with the proposed mechanism selective separation of galena from chalcopyrite and heazlewoodite from chalcocite has been Achieved.

Lead blast furnace slags contain typically 10 - 20 mass per cent Zn. The zinc can be recovered by slag fuming, in which a powdered coal/air mixture is injected into a molten slag bath. Volatilised zinc is recovered as zinc oxide from the gas and processed hydrometallurgically to produce zinc metal. The ISASMELT continuous lead smelting process in operation at Mt Isa produces a slag containing about 12 per cent Zn which is currently granulated and stockpiled. This slag could flow to a further bath-smelting reactor for continuous zinc fuming. Rather than collecting the zinc as fume from such a process, one option would be to recover it using a lead splash condenser. The success of this operation would depend on the composition of the gas produced, in particular the concentrations of gases capable of reoxidising zinc vapour, viz, carbon dioxide and water vapour. The aim of this investigation was to determine the smelting conditions for a bath-smelting process such as ISASMELT or SIROSMELT which would produce a gas similar in composition to that from an Imperial Smelting Furnace by thermodynamic modelling of the process using the CSIRO Thermochemistry System. It was found that such a gas could be produced if coal injection and oxygen enrichment of the combustion air to at least 40 per cent 02 were used. However, the off-take gases must be conditioned by addition of methane to reduce the water vapour content to acceptable levels. An addition rate of ten per cent of the off-gas flowrate was found to be adequate. Addition of methane to the off-gas had the added advantage of cooling the gas from the bath temperature to a temperature suitable for normal lead splash condenser operation.
