Dilution and loss of ore during the mining process invariably occur in all underground mining operations. This dilution and ore loss can have a significant effect on the performance and value generated from a mining operation. Further, excessive dilution or greater than anticipated ore loss during mining is often one of the key reasons for the underperformance of a mining project when compared to a feasibility study or annual budget. Mining professionals often go to great lengths preparing detailed mine plans, schedules and economic models only to then apply high-level estimates or rule of thumb values for dilution and mining recovery that can ultimately lead to inaccurate forecasts for the performance of a mine with the resultant loss of value due to the mining of uneconomic material or the loss of potentially valuable ore. This paper discusses processes and practices that can be practically used to manage dilution and mining recovery in an underground mining operation with a focus on understanding and then maximising value. The processes cover items such as the definition and measurement of dilution and mining recovery, techniques for the estimation of dilution and mining recovery, consideration of the economic implications, management of dilution and mining recovery through the stages of the planning cycle, and practices to reduce dilution and improve mining recovery. Common misconceptions and omissions are also discussed.

This paper is intended to help design engineers, operating staff and plant managers understand the principles of metallurgical gas handling systems design. It also explains operating, safety and energy savings issues that the designer should take into consideration in the design of process off-gas systems for sulfide smelters. Primary smelting reactors, converters, and other off-gas sources impose challenging duty requirements on the various components of the gas handling systems. This paper reviews the design of common system components including the hood for gas capture at the system inlet, gas conditioning, gas cleaning, ductwork, dampers, hot gas fans, and the appropriate use of instrumentation and controls. The engineer must also be aware of how ductwork system effects and heat losses influence system performance. Also, the analysis of a recently-designed gas handling system will be reviewed, which includes high-strength SO2 gas from a smelting reactor, asymmetrically located Peirce-Smith converters, and a gas mixing chamber to mix the gases before they are sent to two acid plants of different sizes.

Silica-Kaolin Sand Wet Sizing The Bulgarian deposits of silica-kaolin sand are localised in the eastern part of the Danube plain. After wet separation the raw material yields two products - washed kaolin (different grades) and silica sand (different grades). The water washing technology includes: disintegration; spiral classification; hydrocyclone classification and dewatering of kaolin grades; hydroclassification; sizing using drum screens and dewatering of silica sand grades. Research and development program has started to improve the silica-kaolin sand separation in processing plants. Based on the raw material and tails characterisation data and the preliminary experiments using Derrick Stacksizer screening machines a silica-kaolin sand wet sizing technology was developed. The full-scale pilot flowsheet includes the following units: Derrick Stacksizer equipped with 0.43 mm opening Derrick Urethane Panel; 500 mm Flat bottom Hydrocyclone; Derrick Stacksizer equipped with 0.150 mm opening Derrick Urethane Panel; 100 mm Hydrocyclone and Derrick Dual Motor Linear Motion Machine equipped with 0.064 mm opening Derrick Pyramid Panel. The pilot-test data clearly demonstrate that the new silica-kaolin sand wet sizing technology is suitable for Bulgarian silica-kaolin raw material. There are possibilities to increase the silica sand recovery increasing the production of silica sand grade PK 0.16 and starting the production a new grade PK 0.10.

Remedial options for a waste rock dump (WRD) were considered as part of closure planning studies at an active mine in Western Australia. To minimise the impact of any seepage from the landform it was determined that placement cover system utilising the moisture ‘store-and-release’ concept was appropriate. The purpose of the cover system was to:•Reduce net infiltration of meteoric water to attenuate peak concentrations for contaminants of concern in natural receptors to levels that can be assimilated without adverse impact to the surrounding ecosystem; •Provide a growth medium for establishment of a sustainable vegetation canopy; and •Improve current quality of surface water runoff from waste storage areas.The project comprised several phases of work: materials characterisation, numerical soil-plant-atmosphere (SPA) modelling and finally cover system construction and monitoring equipment installation.CITATION:Barritt, R, 2018. The potential for extracting gravel materials from active floodplain and channel areas has been investigated for three West Coast rivers û the Grey, Inangahua and Whataroa. Studies have focused primarily on resource availability and replenishment, but there are clearly also environmental management issues associated with such a proposal. The potential uses for of extracted materials include roading and concrete aggregates, as well as railway ballast, whilst a major benefit would be in assisting with flood control and channel maintenance in a naturally aggrading system. Sediment movement in the rivers has been examined at three scales; long-term (>100 years), medium-term (10 - 100 years) and short-term (<10 years). Long-term sediment movement is based on geological and geomorphological information, such as cyclic fan development and down-cutting in the Whataroa River where sediment input appears to be largely controlled by Alpine Fault rupture events. Medium-term assessment relied on air-photo interpretations over a period of about 50 years, with the mapping of channel changes and bank migration. Short term changes were evaluated from gauging records and other hydrological data, and took account of the development of an armour layer in these gravel-bed river systems. It was concluded that sediment in the lower reaches of each river was suitable for most aggregate uses, although input of more weathered Greenland Group materials in the upper reaches (eg of the Mawhera-iti or Little Grey) resulted in product that was not satisfactory for sealing chip or railway ballast. Of greater importance was the fact that short-term studies showed that a minimum threshold of flow was required for gravel entrainment, and that significant sediment movement only occurred above the one-year return period flood. Ongoing monitoring of river profiles, with accompanying flow gauging, would clearly be necessary were a substantial increase in river bed extraction to be permitted by The West Coast Regional Council.

Maghemite - A Source of Heavy Medium for Coal Washeries Use of magnetite as heavy medium in coal preparation plants has been increasing steadily in recent years. It might be in short supply in some areas or excessively costly in certain times. In Turkey, the cost of heavy medium magnetite has almost tripled since 2003. As a result, alternative sources of heavy medium material have been evaluated. A maghemite ore from Elbistan-Kahramanmaras was found to be an interesting source. Tests showed that the maghemite ore can be enriched via magnetic separation at 1556 gauss to obtain a heavy medium material with 4.93 g/cm3 density and 97.22 per cent magnetic recovery. Further tests were conducted to determine the optimum field strength for magnetic separation, friability and regeneration recovery.

Soil and groundwater beneath the Budelco zinc production plant at Budel-Dorplein (The Netherlands) are contaminated with metals and sulphate. To avoid contamination of nearby drinking water aquifers in the very distant future, a geohydrological containment system (GCS) and a microbial treatment plant for extracted contaminated groundwater have been developed. As a first step in the design of the system groundwater data from over 150 wells and geological profiles were used to model geohydrological conditions beneath the site. Several configurations of water-extraction wells were deduced from the model. Data gathered during additional fieldwork were then used to improve the model. Finally results that were calculated for the various configurations were used to select an optimal groundwater containment system. Currently some 5000 m3/day groundwater are extracted from a combination of 12 shallow and deep wells. Heavy metals and sulphate have to be removed from the extracted water before it can be discharged into the river system or used as process water. Several water treatment methods have been studied and pilot-tested at the site. The preferred and selected process is based on the activity of sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB) and combines sulphate removal and heavy metal removal in one single step. The anaerobic bacteria reduce the sulphate to sulphide resulting in the precipitation of metal sulphides. A pilot plant gave promising results and a commercial-scale plant has been designed. The proposed design has been tested in a demonstration plant which included all main process units. Test results for all process units are presented. The collected information was then used to optimise the design of the commercial-scale plant. Special attention was paid to automation and safety items. Construction of the plant was finished in May 1992. Start-up, commissioning and operational experience are reported. The concentrations of metals and sulphate in the effluent of the SRB water treatment plant are well within the limits set by the authorities for discharge to public waters.

Boom time in the mining industry has presented mill operators with several unique challenges including the need for increased throughput while being constrained by a shortage of skilled labour and aging capital equipment. New instrumentation technology that provides reduced installation costs; no process down time for installation; and reduced maintenance costs and labour requirements; has been introduced to address the labour situation while maintaining production. This new tech- nology also enabled more accurate and reliable process measurements thus providing the capability for operators to maximise throughput with their existing capital equipment. This passive SONAR based technology can accurately measure the volumetric flow rate of single phase and multiphase fluids as well as the amount of air entrained within slurries. This is accomplished in a non-invasive manner. This paper will describe the principle of operation as well as the application of the technology to critical minerals processing applications. Included will be operational examples comparing the SONAR measurement performance to traditional measurement techniques. These examples will include hydrocylone feed flow, flotation concentrate flow, and slurry streams containing magnetic ores. Actual plant data will be presented as well as a discussion on the operational advantages such a measurement capability.Also described will be the power of the technology platform to provide novel process monitoring and control capabilities such as pipeline sand-out prevention and pipeline acoustic monitoring.

On the southern flank ofLihir Island, a group of three volcanic cones were discovered at water depths from 1000 - 1500 m. The volcanoes are located in a narrow zone of recent seismic activity and elevated heat flow (up to 100 mW/m2). The recovered rocks consist of fresh alkali-olivine basalts, clinopyroxene-rich basalts, and porphyritic phlogopite basalts. One of the volcanoes has a recently erupted ejecta blanket (recovery of warm ash!), containing a suite of abundant mafic to ultramafic xenoliths. These xenoliths appear to represent a unique cross-section of subduction-modified mantle material sampled by volatile-rich primary fore-arc magma during its ascent to the seafloor. The most spectacular finding was the discovery of an active hydrothermal system with associated vent fauna and mineralization at Edison Seamount, and the recovery of unusually gold-rich (up to 43 ppm Au) hydrothermal precipitates in 1050 m water depth at the top of Conical Seamount, only 25 km south of the world-class epithermal Ladolam gold deposit on Lihir. The discovery of submarine hydrothermal vents associated with highly alkaline, quartz-undersaturated fore-arc volcanics represents a significant departure from similar hydrothermal systems on the mid-ocean ridges and in back-arc basins. The high gold grades in hydrothermal precipitates at Conical Seamount may indicate the first documented example of a shallow-marine epithermal system analogous to those known on land, and has important implications' for the gold potential of submarine arc environments.

Coal washability data can be used for assessing coal quality. However, the techniques of using these data to solve quality problems differ from one mine to another and certain problems may never really be investigated due to limitations of the available techniques. One promising way to overcome these limitations is by correct application of geostatistics.A geostatistical study on coal washability data was undertaken based on a data set of closely spaced in-pit bore cores. These bore cores were analysed consistently over a relatively simple geological area. The average distance between the drill holes was about lOOm. There were 78 drill holes available for the area after deleting the erroneous bore cores. During the study, nine extra closely spaced drill holes were drilled within a single mining block.A procedure to construct two coal quality models, a kriging or cokriging model and a simulation model, was proposed. The modelling results for the data above are discussed and results of a mine scheduling exercise based on the models developed are included.

The main outcomes of mining grade control include defining the boundary between ore and waste and then categorising the ore according to which stockpile it should be sent. A typical workflow includes using general mine planning software (GMP) – such as SurpacTM, VulcanTM or CAE StudioTM – to create three-dimensional wireframes of mineralisation domains, which are used to flag the relevant samples of interest and constrain estimation during block modelling. Creating the wireframes is a time-consuming process, requiring reasonable software skills, patience and an eye for detail. The interpretations can be subjective; indeed, even the same geologist will give different shapes if presented with the same data at different times. The process can become particularly tedious when trying to carry out updates due to new data. It can also be difficult to test the effect of alternative interpretations or grade thresholds because of the time constraints in production.There are now several implicit modelling tools available, either as standalone programs or as add-on modules to existing GMP. In this paper, the authors develop a workflow using implicit modelling methods to show how grades and geology can be rapidly interpreted to provide effective domains for grade estimation. The paper includes case studies from open pit gold mines. Minerals and Metals Group (MMG) Century mine (Century) is a large open-cut mine in northwest Queensland approximately 2.5 km long, 1.5 km wide and 240 m deep, with an ultimate pit depth of 320 m. In 2009, the mine experienced three failures which began as small failures, and progressively developed into significant multi-batter failures. The incidents were managed by a combination of analysis, redesign and practical management to achieve positive outcomes for the mine. On the south wall of the mine, a series of batter-scale wedge failures occurred in December 2007. Analysis of structure orientations and design changes aimed to minimise the risk of failure extending over multiple batters, while accepting a risk of further small-scale failures. Design changes were constrained by a culturally sensitive area (CSA) located south of the wall. As mining progressed, shallow wedge failures developed over multiple batters and cracks were observed 60m back from the pit crest, indicating that a large-scale wedge failure was developing. Movement increased in January 2009 as a result of significant rainfall. After considering several design options, the area was stabilised by a cut-back of the wall. Two multi-batter failures also occurred on the north wall as mining progressed through a structurally complex area. Both north wall failures began as small failures that progressively developed, and required a redesign of the wall below as well as practical management of safety aspects. The complex structural geology was difficult to predict ahead of mining, and required geotechnical input into design changes as mining progressed. All three failures potentially had significant impact for ore recovery, and were managed by a combination of analysis, redesign and operational management have resulted to achieve positive outcomes in a challenging mining environment.

The crystallisation behaviour of low melting point CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO inclusions greatly affect the deformability of inclusions during the rolling process. The crystallisation characteristics of CaO-SiO2- Al2O3-MgO melts representing the oxide inclusions in Si-Mn killed steel were systematically investigated. The effect of Al2O3 and MgO contents on the crystallisation change were analysed under a fixed CaO/SiO2 in the complex inclusions. The continuous-cooling-transformation (CCT) and time-temperature-transformation (TTT) experiments were conducted. The results showed that the increase of MgO content increases the crystallisation ability of CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO inclusions, while the increase of Al2O3 content has the opposite effect. The viscosity, liquidus temperature of oxide melt and also the initial crystallisation potential might be the reasons for the change in crystallisation behaviour. Also, the crystallisation activation energy could semi-quantitatively characterise the crystal growth during the crystallisation of inclusions. To obtain low melting point plasticized CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO (CaO/SiO2=1) system inclusions, the Al2O3 content of the system needs to be controlled larger than 15 wt per cent and the MgO content should be kept at a small amount.

WMC Limited, owner/operator of Olympic Dam, the worldÆs largest underground uranium mine and the fourth largest underground copper mine has now completed an expansion that has been classed as a benchmark in the mining industry. To achieve a production increase from 3.4 to 9.25 Mtpa from an underground mining operation in two years was a major challenge, it was essential to review the overall materials handling system from æthe face to the stockpileÆ. The challenge was two-fold:How to deliver 30 000 tonne of ore per day to the processing plant, from a single underground mine? To provide the processing plant with a consistent metallurgical feed. This paper traces the transformation from the old to the new materials handling system at Olympic Dam.

A comparison was made between chemical analysis and ocular mineral/rock classification in health-based risk assessment of historical mine waste produced between 1625 and 1975. Large parts of the mine waste are heavily weathered and secondary minerals are abundant. The field was divided into several areas from where composite samples were collected. Seventy-five mine waste samples were selected for chemical analysis (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, V and Zn) and ocular mineral/rock classification (silicate, mica, granite/pegmatite, carbonate, iron oxide ore, sulfide ore, distribution between chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena and distribution between pyrite and pyrrhotite). The waste has been produced in conjunction with mining a complex sulfidic ore with increasing iron oxide content (mainly magnetite) towards the northern part of the field. Elevated concentrations were found for Cd (average 26 mg/kg dw), Cu (average 3500 mg/kg dw), Pb (average 4100 mg/kg dw) and Zn (average 11 000 mg/kg dw). Large differences between average and median values indicated that the data was not normally distributed, ie the metals occur as discrete minerals (eg chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite). The ocular classification indicated low carbonate content, chalcopyrite dominating over sphalerite and galena in most samples and an even distribution between pyrite and pyrrhotite. Both analytical and ocular mineral/rock classification data were combined into a common matrix that was evaluated using multivariate statistics. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed, for instance, that chromium and vanadium were mostly associated with harder minerals and rocks. PCA also indicated that a similar graphical picture could be obtained for chemical data and ocular mineral/rock classification data, respectively. The comparison indicates that ocular mineral/rock classification can replace or at least reduce the numbers of chemical analysis in health- based risk assessment of historical mine waste.

Phosphate induced stabilisation has been used to create passive iron phosphate coatings on pyrite and pyrrhotite. The formation of solid phosphate coatings on sulfide grains thereby inhibits sulfide oxidation. The aims of the study were to determine whether phosphate induced stabilisation could control sulfide oxidation and metal mobility in partly oxidised, polymineralic, sulfidic mine wastes. Waste materials were obtained from the acid mine drainage generating, abandoned Montalbion silver mine site, far north Queensland, Australia. The waste consists of quartz, kaolinite/illite, sulfide minerals (galena, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, sphalerite, pyrite, arsenopyrite), and pre- and post-mining oxidation products (hydrated Fe, Cu, Pb and alkali mineral salts). SEM observations of waste material treated with potassium orthophosphate showed that metal, metal-alkali and alkali phosphate coatings developed on all sulfides (with the exception of tetrahedrite). The abundance of phosphate phases was dependant on the availability of cations in solution for complexation with the phosphate anion. In turn, the release of cations was dependent on sulfide oxidation or the dissolution of efflorescent mineral salts. Experiments aiming to dissolve these phosphate coatings û using a strongly oxidising solution û showed that the phosphate coatings remained stable, preventing acid generation and metal release. The results of this study demonstrate that liquid phosphate stabilisers can suppress sulfide oxidation and immobilise metals in partly oxidised, polymineralic mine wastes.

By explosion rock mass behaviour is conditioned by preset complex of rocks natural characteristics. Very important role of blockness, which is percent (share) content at examining massif of natural separatenesses of different dimensions and configurations, separated each from other by the cracks of geological and technogene origin. Besides natural properties of massif the power, detonational characteristics of applied explosives, parameters of explosives charges disposition at massif and technology of explosion influence vastly at lumpiness (granulometric structure) of exploded rocks. The mathematical model of rock mass destruction by explosion had been elaborated and substantiated. It ties mutually the initial data (rocks properties, parameters of the charges disposition) and final results of explosion (granulometric structure of exploded rocks). The program of this complicated problem solving had been compiled. Analysing the received results of the problem solving, one can reveal contribution of each group of influence factors for lumpiness of exploded rocks. This fact creates preconditions for elimination or diminution of negative role of some controlled initial data.
