Approximately 42 t of mercury were produced from Puhipuhi from the late nineteenth century until the end of World War II, with no significant gold or silver production. Sinter, eruption breccias and veins, mined for mercury at Puhipuhi and essentially barren of gold, are inferred in many geological models to represent the surficial levels of adularia-sericite style low sulfidation gold-silver systems. These systems may contain economic gold-silver mineralisation at depth. Conceptual geological models have been employed at Puhipuhi in the search for buried gold mineralisation. Homestake Mining utilised a McLaughlin model for exploration from 1982 to 1987, targeting mainly the vicinity of the sinter deposits. From 1987 to 1989 BHP sought deeper structurally controlled gold mineralisation within the basement greywackes, utilising models derived from studies of Round Mountain, USA and Hishikari, Japan. Macraes Mining Company Limited have accessed the previous work and applied a conceptual geological which invokes a north-south structural control for the emplacement of high-level felsic intrusions at depth. Dextral movement on these structures associated with oblique convergence facilitated the formation of a pull-apart basin in which lacustrine sediments overlie basement greywackes and are in tum overlain by Pliocene basalts. Continued activation of the NS structures created a series of inferred NE-trending dilational structures, which are targeted as fluid upflow centres for the surficial outflows. Upflows occur as eruption breccias (e.g., Plumduff) and outflow as silica sinters (eg Mt Mitchell, Williams) which are also partly obscured by the basalt cover. Argillic alteration and mercury mineralisation occur at elevated crustal levels (eg Puhipuhi mine). Modelling from structure and alteration zonations have targeted a fluid upflow in the vicinity of Bush Hill, which was not accessed by previous workers. This target was subsequently supported by surface geology and multi-element soil geochemistry.

The Cambrian structure in the Mt Read Volcanics was produced by four deformational events: obduction of forearc-derived mafic/ultramalic complexes in the early Middle Cambrian, a middle Middle Cambrian extensional phase related to the post-collisional Mt Read volcanism and VHMS mineralisation, Middle Cambrian E-W folding, and Late Cambrian N-S folding and basin inversion. The major phase of VHMS mineralisation in western Tasmania is restricted to the very brief period of extensional tectonics within the middle Middle Cambrian. Within this period a N-S graben was produced with a complex series of transfer zones, largely striking E-W. Most VHMS mineralisation is restricted to the top of massive volcanic successions, with several mines close to Cambrian transfer structures. Many of the transfer structures continued to be active until the Devonian. The later compressional Cambrian events are not significant in localising orc formation. Within the Rosebery mine a complex pattern of minor Cambrian normal faults has a second order control on the distribution of the mineralisation.

In recent years there has been a trend among mining companies to diversify exploration and development away from the countries that have dominated mining activity for the latter half of this century. With some exceptions, this trend is accelerating and is a function of the recognition that many parts of the world, with no previous exposure to modern exploration, are endowed with considerable mineral potential. In addition coincident with changing political and economic circumstances, many countries have recognised the benefits of attracting international mining investment and have radically changed policies, fiscal and legal regimes so as to encourage exploration and mining. Some countries, however, have not readily accepted mining for cultural or social reasons and have yet to make effective changes to mining legislation. For historical reasons, other countries may have little or no direct experience of western economics, nor may they fully recognise the need for stability and competitive fiscal and legal systems to attract foreign investment. Not all ventures in new countries have been commercial successes and there have been some lamentable and recent lapses from grace. Myths and misconceptions regarding cyanide in the mining industry are common. This is not surprising, given the other uses to which cyanide is, and has been put. Unfortunately, the economic benefits, largely due to the introduction of cyanide in towns such as Waihi are often unrecognized. In the current "green" environment, the New Zealand mining industry faces constant scrutiny and challenge. The use of cyanide in hard rock mining is one area which can stir the emotions of the public.   Cyanide can be transported, stored, used and disposed of in a safe manner. The modem mining industry has an excellent record regarding the safety and environmental issues relating to cyanide. Many of the fears relating to cyanide in the mining industry have proven to be unfounded. It is important that this reputation is maintained. This is possible given proactive and ongoing management of cyanide issues.

The Rivera Crystalline Island (RCI) is an erosional window of the intracontinental Parana Basin that outcrops in the Rivera Department, north of Uruguay. RCI is made up mainly by Precambrian granites, metasediments and granite-gneisses. This island is crosscut by a dextral transcurrent shear zone system, the Rivera Shear System (RSS). The bulk strain ellipsoid was defined by previous work and has allowed the evaluation of shear dynamics. The geometry of the shear system is made up of two shear directions: E-W (P-shear), which turn right to NW-SE direction (R-shear), leading to the development of extensional bends. The shear zone system was developed in brittle-ductile to brittle regimes, under temperature conditions compatible with greenschist facies metamorphism. The shear zones are marked by an intensive fracture cleavage development. Mylonites develop only in narrow, discontinuous higher strain zones. Internally, the shear zones are dominated by intrusive rocks, mainly granites, dacites and diorites. Hydrothermal alteration has been developed in several areas.The economic significance of RCI is given by several small gold deposits, which have been exploited since 1869. One major new gold mine is under development, the San Gregorio Gold Mine. This gold deposit is locally controlled by a dilatant site where R-shear turns right to P-shear. Mine lithologies were deeply altered by hydrothermal fluids in the dilatant structure. This work presents the lineament-structural analysis carried out to identify similar structural patterns in all RCI sites favourable to host other gold deposits. The exploration program also considered remote sensing, geology, geophysical and geochemical survey.

Pyrite is a significant gangue sulphide mineral in the Ok Tedi copper ore. Its presence in the flotation concentrate is not entirely desirable since it lowers the grade of the final copper concentrate. Lime depression of the pyrite has been practiced with some success. However, it has been observed that at the pH for pyrite depression a significant amount of the pyrite particles still float. To obtain further insight into the problem this work has been conducted to determine the composition, natural floatability and xanthate flotation behaviour of the various types of pyrite in the ore. The flotation results show that while some types of pyrite float well at high pH values, others are readily depressed. The implications of these results for Ok Tedi flotation plant have been Considered.

A combination of new radiometric age dates, local field relationships and the regional tectonic history indicate that the low sulphidation, fault breccia-hosted, epithermal gold-silver mineralisation at Umuna is related to continental rifting processes rather than subduction induced deformation and magmatism. K-Ar and Ar-Ar age dating of secondary sericite associated with the gold-silver mineralisation indicates that the alteration crystallised between 4.0 and 3.2 Ma, whereas relative age relationships and SHRIMP II U-Pb dating of the abundant Boiou porphyry intrusions on Misima confirm that the calc-alkaline plutonism is significantly older (8.1 f 0.4 Ma) and related to a different tectonothermal event. The Woodlark Basin sea floor spreading centre occurs to the north of Misima and has continued to propagate westwards, into the continental basement of the Papuan Peninsular, since the end of the Miocene. The westernmost tip of sea floor spreading centre is presently to the east of the D'Entrecasteaux Islands but would have been to the east of Misima roughly 4 Ma. Many of the young tectonothermal features in the D'Entrecasteaux Islands (hydrothermal activity and associated epithermal mineralisation, metamorphic core complex exhumation, detachment faulting, peralkaline volcanism, half graben type basin formation) can be attributed to major extensional deformation ahead of the propagating rift system. Similar tectonothermal features on Misima are temporally associated with the epithermal gold-silver mineralisation at Umuna, suggesting that the D'Entrecasteaux Islands are a modern day tectonic analogue for Misima at the time of precious metal mobility and deposition. The underlying message of this paper is that investment in prospecting, exploration and mining in New Zealand is welcomed. The Government's policy with respect to Crown owned minerals is for continuing investment in prospecting, exploration and mining which is in accordance with good exploration or mining practice. To encourage continued investment requires a business-friendly environment. Government policies and initiatives to enhance the business environment for the minerals and coal exploration and mining industries are discussed in this paper. As well, new initiatives under consideration, which have the purpose of enhancing the investment environment, are discussed.

The ability of the Australian minerals industry to successfully manage the changes and challenges that face it in the 21st century depends ultimately on the quality of its human resources. Mining engineers have a vital role in this regard. The education and training that universities are currently giving to mining engineers is under challenge and needs to be reassessed in the light of industry directions for the 21st century. At one extreme is a push for a `finished product' graduate, up and running in `the flavour of the month' issues. At the other extreme are moves to reduce face-to-face university teaching hours and return to the time honoured university concept of `reading' for a degree. The lessons of Mourn make it apparent that neither approach is appropriate to the industry's future needs (Windridge, 1996). Basic knowledge gets rusty with time and new skills need to be learned. In order to conduct mining operations safely, productively and competitively, mining engineers must now accept the need to be prepared for continuing professional development as a career imperative. The concept of being professionally or statutorily qualified for life is no longer valid. This calls into question the purpose, content, structure and mode of delivery of university courses, all of which need to engender the principle and facilitate the cause of continuing professional development. This paper presents a model which aims to deliver a quality assured university education for mining engineers for the 21st century at undergraduate, postgraduate and professional level. The model extends beyond traditional university boundaries to match industry requirements to international best practice. It is based on collaborative alliances and innovative presentation modes which will provide industry access to undergraduate and postgraduate course elements presented by a broad range of national and international academic and industry authorities. It offers the prospect for preserving the best of university ideals in higher education, for developing and maintaining programs of direct relevance to industry needs and for a structured involvement in the continuing professional development of mining engineers.

Copper minerals are often associated with gold ores. These create processing problems since cyanide solutions are not selective for gold alone. Copper minerals are also leached by cyanide, and typically each one per cent of `reactive' copper in the ore consumes about 30 kg t 1 cyanide. Once in solution, copper cyanide species create further processing problems as they adsorb onto carbon along with the dicyanoaurate ion. These problems make conventional cyanidation of gold ore uneconomic if the ore contains too much copper. As a result, methods of economically processing gold-copper ores are becoming of increasing importance.One of the more promising methods of treating these ores is by selective leaching of the gold by an ammoniacal cyanide solution, a method first described by Hunt in 1901. This method is already in commercial use in Mauritania, treating copper/gold tailings. In general terms, the addition of I - 2 g U1 ammonia to a standard cyanide leach solution causes a significant increase in gold extraction and decrease in copper extraction. However, early testwork on this system has concluded that the optimal leach conditions are critically dependent on ore composition, and the mechanism is not well understood, making predictions of best conditions impossible.

The Emperor Gold mine at Vatukoula, Fiji, is a nine million ounce gold telluride deposit. In January 1992, the mine was on the verge of closure when the current management team took charge. Losses had been incurred for two consecutive years and the published resource amounted to less than five years of production. Relationships with the workforce, the government and the general public were poor. Today, the mine has recorded three consecutive years of profit, has resources that will support the operation for at least 20 years and has excellent relationships with employees, government and the general public.

The domestic and commercial use of underground space dates back to Neanderthal man living in caves. There are many examples worldwide of the imaginative use of underground excavations, either left by mining or purpose-built. World living trends indicate that an increasing percentage of the population is living in and around major cities. Environmental, social and economic pressures associated with urban expansion can be partially catered for by a well-planned and integrated underground space regime. This paper addresses the types of underground development that are complementary to the economic and environmental pressures associated with urban expansion and high density cities. The paper explores the implications of mining and exploration technology and civil engineering, as well as the ancillary professional disciplines (legal, architecture and planning, sociology and education).

When a joint venture is established between a major and a minor, the co-venturers often have a number of divergent interests; the major may have put up significantly more capital into the project and will want to protect its investement; the major may have more financial resources and be more readily to commit capital to the project; the major may have more technical resources and expertise to provide to the project; the major may have other competing demands for its capital; the minor may be relying on rapid development of the project as its sole source of cash flow. Successful joint ventures arise when the co-venturers understand each others' interests and attempt to satisfy these interests. This could be achived by having a clear process and timetable for development of the project coupled with clear rules for distribution of income, the commitment of capital to the project and the provision of inter-company services. If divergent interests are either regulated clearly or eliminated, both co-venturers are more likely to seek common objectives in the joint venture with less scope for conflict. This paper, written from the perspective of a major, examines means of establishing successful joint ventures between majors and minors.

Mineralisation processes in epithermal deposits in the North Island of New Zealand are best illustrated by considering the two most productive deposits: Waihi and the Thames Bonanza Zone (TBZ), which have different mineralogies and ore shoots geometries. These two deposits can be taken as typical of certain styles of epithermal deposits worldwide, and recognition of their differences can be used to develop mineralisation models of predictive value. Waihi, the major economic producer in the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ), has laterally near-continuous ore shoots over a vertical interval of 600 m which consist of quartz, chalcedony, pyrite, base metal sulphides and electrum. They are found in the foot wall of earlier quartz veins which contain quartz pseudomorphs after platy calcite and adularia. The Thames Bonanza Zone which was the second biggest producer in the CVZ has discrete near-vertical ore shoots over 300 m vertically, which consist of quartz, pyrite, base metal sulphides, electrum and in their upper parts barite, that are enclosed in veins of quartz.   The gold mineralisation in both deposits is considered to be a co-precipitate with pyrite, with that at Waihi produced by prolonged boiling in an upflow of a hydrothermal system. That at the TBZ was produced by mixing a deep water primed for gold deposition by prior limited boiling, with an oxidised condensate of the steam released by the boiling, in an outflow proximal to the system's upflow.
