Increasing energy costs associated with mining have become an issue that must be addressed by industry to ensure sustainable production. As underground mine ventilation systems account for 40% to 50% of a mine?s total energy requirement, initiatives to maximize their efficiency have been introduced worldwide. A control method known as Ventilation-On-Demand (VOD), which adjusts the ventilation system by responding to the activities of mine personnel and air quality, has been commissioned at Vale?s Coleman Mine. This initiative is an effort to reduce energy consumption, maximize efficiency of the ventilation system while ensuring air quality. There are five control strategies that can be executed with the VOD control system in place at Coleman Mine: Manual real time control Time-of-Day Scheduling Event-based control Environmental control Activity Based Control/Tagging This paper describes the system, control strategies and impact on energy consumption and flexibility of airflow distribution as applied at Vale?s Coleman Mine.

On November 16, 1978, Finance Minister Chretien delivered his second formal budget in the House of Commons. Over-all, the provisions of the budget should provide moderate stimulus to the Canadian economy. With respect to the mining industry, the budget offers some welcome changes in the form of' improved write-offs for development expenses and social assets; higher investment tax credits; and a reduction in federal sales tax. On the other hand, income bond financing of new mineral ventures may be restricted.

"In October 1982, Rio Algom Limited, purchased a tin prospect near East Kemptville, Nova Scotia, from Shell Canada Resources. This purchase led to the development of the first substantial tin mine in North America. This paper deals with the drillingand blasting operations at Rio Algom, in particular the use of emulsion explosives technology.This presentation describes what emulsion explosives and Heavy AN/FO are, and the support system used to deliver these products to the blast site.HistoryThe East Kemptville mine site was discovered by Shell Canada Resources (SCR) in July 1978. SCR started diamond drilling on the tin prospect in March 1979. After 8220 m of BQ drilling, it was estimated a reserve of 56 000 000 tonnes of 0.165% Sn was present.The property, which is located 54 km northeast of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia (Fig. 1), showed, after a feasibility study that, given an ore treatment rate of 9000 tonnes per day, a mine life of 17 years could be expected.GeologyThe tin deposit of the East Kemptville Mine, occurs in granitic rocks at their contact with metasedimentary rocks. The mineralization is in the form of cassiterite with associated sulphides of copper and zinc. The tin occurs in a stockwork of tin bearing Greisen alteration zones.East Kemptville MineThe mine planned an open pit operation with the first five years being mined at a rate of 14 000 tonnes per day, of which 5000 tonnes will be waste and low grade ore. Eventually, the total mining rate will be 21 000 tonnes per day, including 12 000 tonnes of waste and low grade ore. Figure 2 shows the general layout of the mine site.East Kemptville Chooses Emulsion ExplosivesIn December 1984, East Kemptville Mine awarded the Explosives Division of C-I-L Inc. a contract to supply explosives to the borehole. "Abstract - Buried, possibly mineralized granite cupolas at the Silsilah tin deposit in Saudi Arabia (lat. 26°06' N, long. 42°40' E) have been successfully located using a closely spaced electric-field-ratio profiling technique. In this study, electrical fields at 27 and 270 Hz across grounded electrodes spaced 50 m apart were measured along six traverses. This method is interpretable by inspection, unlike the dipole-dipole technique, which requires mathematical modeling for interpretation.In the study area, the technique allowed the authors to identify and distinguish among unroofed granite cupolas, cupolas with their aplite-pegmatite apical contact zones intact, strong (quartz-rich) and weak (relatively quartz-poor) greisens, dikes, faults, and pervasively argillized rocks.This method should be useful in the valuation of other shallow mineral prospects in similar settings in other parts of the world, especially deposits for which the location of vertical contrasts is important, such as veins or mineralized zones associated with the apexes of small igneous cupolas."

"Campbell mines has been in operation since 1948. Part of the process consists of roasting of a flotation concentrate which contains arsenopyrite.At present operation level the milling rate averages about 850 t.p.d. and about 48 t.p.d. of concentrate is roasted. The gas emissions at present contain between 3 and 3.5 t.p.d. of arsenic trioxide, about2 - 2.5 t.p.d. of particulate matter and between 19 - 25 t.p.d. of sulphur dioxide. The particulate is extremely fine calcine dust and it assays about 4 oz. Of gold per ton.Until 1974 the gas was discharged untreated through a 125' stack.UntreatedThe decision was made in 1972 to erect a gas treatment plant, construction ran through 1973 and operation began in 1974. The cost of the installation was about 1.3 million dollars.On investigation the process technology, it was apparent that the plant operated by giant Yellowknife for the same purpose was the model we should study. I would like to acknowledge the fine cooperation we had from giant, the plant that emerged is very similar to theirs and incorporates some improvements suggested by them and based on their operating experience.The plant is designed to remove arsenic and solid dust and it has no provisions to remove sulphur dioxide.We depend upon the 125' stack to assure adequate dilution. Because of the nearby airport the stack cannot exceed 125'. A stack burner is provided that can ""y used to heat the stack gas and carry it higher into the atmosphere when there is an inversion condition.The removal of arsenic from hot gas is fairly simple. The sublimation point is about 425°f, a few degrees above this point the arsenic is a gas and a few degrees below it condenses into a solid form. The arsenic could have been removed by simply dropping the temperature below the condensation point and collecting all the solids in a baghouse. This would have removed the possibility of recovering the gold in the calcine dust and would have produced an impure and more bulky arsenic material to be placed in safe storage. The decision was made to collect the solid dust in a hot electrostatic precipitator operating above the sublimation point and subsequently lower the temperature below the condensation point and collect the arsenic in a baghouse."

As part of an initiative to improve value in mining, CEMI is developing a handbook on best practice in mine design. Various formats were examined, and of these, the wiki was selected as being most suitable. Being web-based, its global reach and capability of being continuously updated allows the wiki to evolve as new knowledge is generated, and to capture the diversity of experience of practitioners in the mining industry. While wikis have many advantages in terms of organizing content and searching, their ability to be edited by users is often seen as a negative characteristic for quality control. To ensure reliability of information content, author attribution, specific authorship models, and a peer review process have been implemented, in addition to the standard version tracking capability of wikis. The first phase of the project concentrates on topics related to underground hard rock mine design. The scope will be expanded to cover other aspects of mining as the project matures. Strategic partnerships with various organizations, such as the CIM, and CANMET, are being formed to provide a wide range of seed material to stimulate growth of the site. www.minedesignwiki.org

The Centennial orebody was discovered and named in 1970, Manitoba's centennial year. It is relatively small, about 2 million tons. Strike length varies from 400 to 600 feet and widths from 10 to 60 feet; dip is 75 degrees. Low grade and metal prices demanded low-cost mining, and the mine was developed for conventional sublevel stoping. As the ore lay entirely under a large lake, ground movement had to be avoided and the stopes were to be filled hydraulically. Late in 1973, vertical crater retreat mining was introduced at Inco Limited, Sudbury, to recover pillars between filled stopes. It proved satisfactory and the results were publicized by CIL, who developed the technique. The method seemed to offer some advantages and one stope at Centennial Mine was selected to be mined by VCR while production was maintained from blasthole stopes. The trial stope was safe and showed lower development costs, reduced drilling time, a favourable powder factor and good fragmentation. VCR mining is now an accepted method at HBM&S Co., Ltd., and its use is being extended.

Mining in highly stressed ground conditions has been an increasing challenge at the Brunswick mine. Over the past 30 years, two large regional pillars were established on the 1000 m Level to support the ground for safe extraction of the surrounding ore. The South Regional Pillar contains about 5 Mt of ore and the North Regional Pillar has about 3 Mt of ore. In the fall of 2000, mining activities were suspended following a series of ground movements around the South Regional Pillar along weak geological structures. After extensive geotechnical investigations, a decision was made to carry out a mass de-stress blast in the West Ore Zone (WOZ) to cut the principal stress across an area of 135 m along strike and 86 m high. At the end of July 2001, the WOZ mass blast was successfully initiated. Following this success, the mine decided to take a similar approach to de-stressing the North Regional Pillar (NRP). The final mass blast was taken in early February 2003. Advanced blasting technologies, including state-of-the-art electronic detonators and blast simulation, played an important role in achieving the successful blasts. The high precision of delay timing and long delay duration of the electronic detonators ensured accurate and reliable initiations of over 800 blastholes in the WOZ mass blast. Orica’s DMC_Blast (Distinct Motion Code) simulation code was used to study different blasting blocks for the desired timing in the initiation sequence. This paper describes the process of applying electronic detonators in complex blasts, and discusses how blast simulation results were interpreted to guide engineering design of the mass blasts.

"Probably the only thing that can he said about conveyor belt scales without fear of contradiction is that they have been responsible for as much or more puzzlement, argument and frustration than almost any other piece of equipment commonly found in ore processing facilities. To be sure, there are certainly a good number of satisfactory installations, some of these having been achieved through forethought and careful consideration in the early stages of plant design, while others seem to owl their success to what seems to be little more than good luck or white witchcraft; and it might also appear that black witchcraft or other gremlins are solely responsible for the poor performance of many belt scales that enjoy well-designed installations with apparently good operating conditions.This paper is intended to acquaint users with the major operational reasons why belt scales seem so fickle (and downright ornery too), and establish some reasonably simple test standards against which the performance of scale hardware can be measured. Then it shall be shown how the design flexibility of electronic scale systems can offer particular advantages in overcoming some of these everyday problems in a practical way, and without undue inconvenience to plant operations."

"The results and methodology for the optimisation of the zinc flotation circuit at the Matagami Mill using the 6-Sigma methodology are shown in detail while only the base line and final results are presented for the copper circuit. As a result of the six sigma project, the zinc concentrate grade was improved by 2% and the zinc recovery by 3%, with reduced dosage of reagents while the copper concentrate was improved by 2.4%. The process variation in the zinc concentrate grade and recovery was also reduced by over 50%. The main factors contributing to the project success were identified to be improvement in the plant measurement systems, an internal benchmarking exercise and statistically designed laboratory and in plant tests to guide the process improvement. The annual value to Noranda resulting from this project has been estimated at approximately $5 million.INTRODUCTIONThe Matagami concentrator started ore processing from the new Bell- Allard deposit in July 1999. Concentrator performance (grade and recovery of zinc and copper concentrates) was highly variable and work was ongoing to fix the sources of variation. In the mean time, Noranda embarked on its 6-Sigma initiative across the company. The 6-Sigma DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, Control) methodology was used in the two flotation circuits to reduce variation and improve performance. The statistical 6-Sigma methodology moves towards identifying and controlling critical process operating variables (the X' s) to achieve customerspecified performance (the Y's). The goal of the methodology is to describe a process in a numerical equation known as the transfer function, given as Y = f (XI, X2, X3.. .), where Y could be concentrate grade or recovery and examples of X's are reagent dosage, particle size, etc. With the transfer function, optimal operating conditions and control tolerances are established for the key X's to ensure the desired Y performance is obtained.Each phase of the 6-Sigma methodology is explained below with examples from the Matagami project."

THE Geological Survey was created in 1842 to aid the development of Canada's mineral resources. Although the institution has been in existence for nearly 100 years and has accomplished an immense amount of work, the need for its services remains as great as ever and, indeed, it is difficult to imagine a time when the country will no longer require a Geological Survey. This is so because of the tremendous effort required to make an adequate geological examination of so large an area as is embraced by Canada and partly because what today may seem an adequate geological examination proves, later on, to be inadequate. The ultimate objective of the Geological Survey is to complete the study of all phases of the geology of Canada, that is, to determine how and when the physical features originated, how and when the soils and other unconsolidated deposits were formed, and how and when the solid rocks and associated deposits were produced and assumed their present conditions. When the study has been completed, any only then, will it be possible to make a reliable estimate of the country's mineral resources. This appraisal embraces more than determining the value of already discovered deposits: it also involves attempting to establish what kinds of undiscovered deposits may be present and where they may occur. The estimating of the potential mineral wealth can be clone only after the geology of the country is known. Not until then will it be possible to forecast what types of valued deposits may occur in a district and what types will almost certainly be lacking. A thorough knowledge of the geology of the country is desirable not only to permit estimating the potential mineral resources but also as an aid in locating and developing mineral deposits whether these are of the nature of a bed of limestone, a seam of coal, a reservoir of petroleum, a vein, an irregular body of sulphides, or any other type of deposit.

This paper presents the use of queuing theory in truck fleet sizing in open pit mining operations. In the first part, a methodology is developed by which an optimal ratio between the size of shovels and trucks may be determined. The second part gives the fundamentals of the queuing theory and its application in analyzing shovel and trucks. The stochastic character of involved times (loading, truck cycle, etc.) is taken into consideration. Using the above theory, the optimal truck fleet size in actual conditions may be estimated. Minimal operating cost of the working system (shovels-trucks) represents the basic requirement of the analyzed process. The methodology was validated on Caterpillar front-shovel ? truck combinations.

"Ore grades are declining and getting more complex around the world which not only complicate the ore processing but also produce new type of requirements to manage the produce waste streams. One specifically problematic and increasingly identified element in waste streams produced in mining and metallurgy is arsenic.Arsenic is a compound that has no significant market value, but that needs to be removed from ores, concentrates and other process streams because of environmental or process technical reasons. One example of a removal process is partial roasting of high-As sulfide concentrates, originally developed by Outotec. In this process the arsenic is volatilized in the gas phase and thus separated from the solid material, i.e. the calcine. If the arsenic is recovered by wet methods the process gas is quenched and all arsenic needs to be stabilized in the effluent treatment plant.Outotec has developed ferric arsenate precipitation as a method to produce stabile arsenic residues from wet gas cleaning effluents. Iron based precipitates, when correctly produced, can meet typical landfill criteria measured with different types of leaching methods meant for characterizing the arsenic dissolution behavior from the precipitates.In this paper partial roasting of sulfide concentrates with arsenic volatilization in combination with ferric arsenate precipitation is discussed from the perspective of producing wastes that can meet the stability requirements set by common leaching tests methods, TCLP and CEN. These leaching test methods set the normative landfill requirements for most operations generating arsenic containing wastes. A typical flow sheet of Outotec® Ferric arsenate process is discussed with results showing the importance of correct process control and sequence on producing arsenic containing waste that can meet the landfill disposal requirements."

Keeping the sediment on the mine site and out of the water course is essential from the regulatory, environmental and sustainability perspectives. Regulation of this aspect of mining is embedded in environmental legislation and government receiving water quality standards, and government control has apparently been considered to be the most appropriate method to define mine site discharge standards and the environmental implications of sediment in downstream watercourses. A literature search for guidelines for the site specific design and operation of sediment ponds treating mine site runoff to remove total suspended solids, turbidity and flocculant-induced toxicity, revealed little information on the mining industry?s and government?s roles in defining the ?how to achieve? related to sediment pond design. Is there a need or reason for an industry-driven leadership to clearly define the ?how to? keep the sediment on the mine site and out of the water course? Currently, this issue is addressed in Canada by a federal mining regulation for metal mines which specifies discharge quality for sediment. This paper focuses on the method used in British Columbia, Canada, to regulate and provide a scientific methodology to control the discharge of sediment from mine sites. Management plans relative to this topic are discussed and are considered to have value from the exploration, construction, operation and the onset of closure phases. In addition, the balance and linkage between the erosion control management plan and the sediment pond management plan are discussed in terms of how they may be designed to complement each other to lower the risk of exceeding discharge and receiving water quality standards. If there were an industry-driven standard, or guidance document relative to addressing sediment release, it would benefit mining companies by eliminating the repetitive analysis of this topic for each new mine, mine expansion, and mine modification; also, government may often replace certain aspects of permitting with a regulation, if there is a government/industry established standard defining Best Achievable Technology (e.g. the Canadian Metal Mining Effluent Regulations).

Details of the interactions between the environment and the growth of terrestrial plants may be complex and difficult to study. This paper focusses attention on some of these complexities by means of six examples, each of which provides information on an aspect of the interaction between the growth rate of plants and the chemistry of the environment. The relationships which exist between the information obtained from these examples and the concepts of "holism" and "transfer rate problems" are pointed out and the importance of long-term biog•eochemical studies in Canadian environments is stressed.

Tailings and water management facilities are essential and integral components of mine and mill operations. They must be managed for the long term in order to ensure that safe and environmentally responsible stewardship is achieved. Toward this end, in 1998, The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) published A Guide to the Management of Tailings Facilities, which recommended the implementation of a tailings management framework (Figure 1) to integrate environmental and safety considerations into each stage of the life cycle of a tailings facility, from initial site selection and design, through construction and operation, to eventual decommissioning and closure. By February 2000 it was becoming apparent that while mining companies were making significant progress toward implementing and documenting tailings management systems, and integrating them with overall environmental management systems, further effort was warranted in their application at the operational level. In particular, a need was identified for further guidance in preparing manuals that outline procedures for the safe operation, maintenance and surveillance (OMS) of tailings and water management facilities.

The benefits of using a centrifugal field to concentrate both coarse and fine gold are well documented but the placement of these machines within grinding circuits is still evolving. Conventional wisdom dictates that the best location for enhanced gravity machines is cyclone underflow on account of the elevated grade found in this stream when compared to cyclone feed or overflow. Plant operating experience at both large and small scale indicates that there are compelling arguments to place ENHANCED GRAVITY MACHINES on cyclone feed instead. At least two new plants, presently in the detailed design stage will incorporate gravity circuits that treat mill discharge or cyclone feed, Teck Cominco’s Pogo and Newcrest’s Telfer Expansion.Current Conventional PracticeThe current stream of choice for enhanced gravity concentration within grinding circuits is cyclone underflow although recent information indicates a swing toward cyclone feed. As land resources decrease, commodity prices increase, and technology evolves, deep sea mining is becoming a viable alternative to meet the increasing demand for minerals. Successful deep sea mining operations are built on sound identification of the resource, proper selection of equipment, a thoughtful production plan, and good project management. These four key activities can be further optimized by analyzing how the spatial variability and uncertainty of the ore body properties impact the final mining operation. To address this problem, IHC Merwede is in the process of developing a risk quantification framework in the context of deep sea mining, which makes use of state of the art geostatistical simulation methods and transfer functions to quantify geological uncertainty and translate it into decision or project risk. The paper introduces the Local Average Subdivision method (LAS) for generating simulated models of the deposit and presents a new extension to incorporate point measurements of geotechnical or ore grade properties. Due to its computational efficiency, the presented method is suitable for simulating largely extended sea floor deposits. The second part of the paper illustrates, through example case studies, the significant benefits of a risk based approach which translates geological uncertainty into financial or operational performance indicators. In particular, the focus is on assessing financial project risk and on the design optimization of the deep sea excavation equipment by analyzing cutting forces, specific energies, and power requirements.

Introduction The Dome mine, in the Porcupine mining camp of northern Ontario, is one of the important gold mines of the country, having produced over 139 million dollars worth of gold from the commencement of production in '1910 to the end of 1944. The geology of the mine is complex and a number of types of ore are known, each occurring under particular conditions. The mine workings are very extensive and by far the greater part of them have been geologically mapped only in reconnaissance fashion. By 1940, when the writer joined the mine staff, the orebodies in the sedimentary trough and the 'nose' orebodies, the first types to be developed, were almost worked out and many workings were inaccessible, so the descriptions of these types are based largely on study of the plans and records. The same applies to a lesser extent to some other types. At various places in this paper, statements are made as to the mineralogical or chemical composition of the rocks. Most of these determinations are based on examinations made with a hand lens and cannot, therefore, be regarded as very reliable. General Geology As there are several types of ore in the mine, occurring under quite diverse conditions, a brief outline of the geology is given here, sufficient to provide a general picture into which the fuller descriptions given with each type of ore can be fitted.
