"Rock mass characterization for deep underground construction and mining offers many challenges. This paper first describes some of the key challenges when characterizing highly stressed brittle rocks and then offers some guidance on how to arrive at reliable rock mass strength parameters for deep mining applications. Focus is placed on characterization for rock mass strength determination. It is illustrated how the common use of currently available rock mass characterization systems tend to underestimate the strength of rock at depth. Modifications to currently adopted approaches, i.e., the use of Geological Strength Index GSI for rock mass strength determination, are presented.INTRODUCTIONFor green fields projects, the first challenge of rock mass characterization stems from a lack of access to examine the rock mass at scales larger than typical core sizes (i.e., ~63mm in diameter) until late in the mine design when the flexibility for making changes is constrained. Hence, rock mass characterization often has to rely on information derived from boreholes alone (e.g., core, logs, etc.). This challenge is lessened when mines are expanded from existing operations. A second challenge is related to changing rock mass behaviour with increasing depth and stress. At depth, the rock is highly stressed, thus closer to failure, and often highly confined which leads to a higher interlocking with elevated strength but more brittleness. The goals of rock mass characterization are to be tailored to the technical goals of an investigation. For example, for cave engineering, the workflow includes the assessment of five key engineering aspects (Brown, 2007): Caveability; fragmentation; cave performance; extraction level stability; and mine construction (rock support). Each engineering aspect has to address specific engineering questions and each design component is influenced by different rock mass behaviour aspects and thus is dominated by different rock mass properties, e.g., the vulnerability to stress fracturing (spalling), the bulking characteristics for flow control and support selection, and the confining stress impact on pillar or support design. An effective rock mass characterization program, including logging, mapping and laboratory testing, thus has to collect and interpret features that are relevant for the above listed purposes. Some of the predominant factors are: block volume of defected and non-defected rock; spalling strength; tensile strength of defects; rock mass modulus; and rock mass strength parameters for application to low and high confinement design aspects."

Processing material at a consistent rate through the continuous countercurrent decantation (CCD) thickeners presented a major bottle neck to unlocking additional value from one of the post-flotation streams at the Kansanshi processing plant. The manual operation of the thickeners making up the CCD train resulted in frequent imbalances and process upsets across units. The automation of CCD trains is notoriously tricky as the available manipulated variables are outnumbered by the parameters requiring regulation. The implementation of an advanced, auction-based, control philosophy to manage the movement of both slurry and solution inventory through the train addressed this parameter imbalance and lead to the stabilisation of the circuit. Since the commissioning of this control strategy: an additional 7 200 dmt/day (+36% throughput) of material can reliably be processed through the train, the number of monthly downtime events has reduced, and a saving of $354 000/month in reagent cost has been achieved. INTRODUCTION CCD operation Agitated leaching is a common method used in hydrometallurgy to extract a metal from its host ore. The host ore is initially finely ground to liberate the surfaces of the valued minerals and improve the kinetics of the leaching process. The ore is then contacted in an agitated tank with a lixiviant to dissolve the desired metal into the aqueous phase. The resultant slurry from the leaching process comprises of a solution pregnant in the metal salt and a barren ore. The first purification step taken after leaching is to wash the pregnant liquor solution (PLS) from the depleted ore. On the industrial scale, a set of between two to ten thickeners arranged in a countercurrent configuration is often used to carry out this separation (Perry & Chilton, 1973). The slurry is introduced at the head of the train and a wash solution at the tail. The two streams are pumped through each thickener countercurrent to one other. At each stage the residual PLS in the slurry is mixed and diluted down with the countercurrent overflow solution from the downstream thickener. The diluted slurry is fed into the thickener where the solids separate out through gravity sedimentation. The settled solids are channelled towards the underflow of the thickener by a rake mechanism and pumped downstream to the next thickener in the train. The outcome is the recovery of a PLS from the overflow of the lead thickener and a slurry of washed solids from the underflow of the tails thickener.

Methane is recognized as one of the prime causes of underground mine disasters around the globe. A cost-effective mine ventilation system and methane control is required to ensure a safe and productive environment in an underground mine whilst keeping energy usage and operating cost at minimum. Typically methane enters a mine environment or tunnel from localized distributed sources at high initial concentration. Hence, an understanding of its dispersion from discrete sources is important to design a methane management system via effective ventilation. This study employs computational fluid dynamics to model methane dispersion in an underground tunnel which has a number of discrete sources of methane and effective ways to dilute and or disperse it. Air flow distribution within the tunnel as well as methane dispersion is simulated by solving the governing transport equations subject to appropriate boundary conditions. First, the effectiveness of ventilation duct placement is examined. Several possibilities are explored and investigated. It is found that the common configuration utilized in underground mine performs best as compared to other configurations in maintaining the concentration of methane below permissible levels. Next, a novel intermittent airflow ventilation system is proposed and evaluated via simulation with the goal of reducing the energy cost whilst maintaining methane level in the mining face below the allowable level. Parametric studies are conducted to investigate effects of various factors influencing the effectiveness and performance of this novel intermittent ventilation system. This study will provide some new ideas for designing an efficient and effective underground mine ventilation system by lowering the net average amount of air that needs to be circulated in the tunnel for a safe operation. "In Belgium, Boom Clay is considered as one of the potential host formations for the disposal of the High Level radioactive Waste (HLW). The URL HADES at 223 m depth at Mol site was constructed in order to study the feasibility of HLW disposal in Boom Clay. Since 1995, the URL R&D programme has focused on large scale demonstration tests like the PRACLAY experiment.The PRACLAY in-situ experiments include a set of three tests: The gallery and crossing test, PRACLAY Heater test and PRACLAY seal test. The main aim of the Heater test is to study at a large scale the thermal impact of a HLW repository on the host rock. The test is housed in the PRACLAY gallery. A hydraulic seal, made of compacted swelling and low permeable bentonite annular ring was installed at the intersection between the heated and the non-heated part of the gallery. The primary objective of the seal is to provide undrained hydraulic boundary conditions for the Heater Test.The PRACLAY gallery was constructed in 2007 and the hydraulic seal was installed in 2010. The bentonite is hydrated by natural and artificial process. The swelling, total pressure and pore pressure of the bentonite are continuously measured and analysed by numerical simulations to get a better understanding of this hydration processes. The performance of the seal is tested systematically by means of gas injection breakthrough tests and permeability tests at interface bentonite / Boom Clay and in the Boom Clay around the seal.The PRACLAY Heater will be turned on at the end of Oct. 2014, since a sufficient seal swelling has been attained to fulfill its role for the PRACLAY Heater test. This paper will focus on the PRACLAY Seal test: How we understand the process behind the hydration of the bentonite and how we test the performance of the bentonite seal."

Coal is the mainstay of Indian energy supplies. The many-fold increase in demand for coal puts a huge pressure on augmenting production, primarily from opencast mines. The increase in production necessitates heavy blasting in overburden and coal benches of opencast mines, which poses numerous challenges in carrying out blasting operations techno-economically. Presently, the consumption of industrial explosives and accessories in Coal India Limited (CIL) has touched a whopping figure of $350 million USD per annum and CIL will be spending approximately $1 billion USD between 2012?2013 to 2014?2015 for procuring explosives and accessories. This paper discusses some of key challenges faced in various mines of CIL during blasting, where blast instrumentation at the mine level will prove to a harbinger for practicing blasting engineers. Presently, the problem of scattering in surface detonators and down-the-hole detonators affects the blast performance significantly by increased blast induced ground vibration and reduced fragmentation. The paper discusses a case study carried out at Umrer opencast project of CIL to investigate the effect of scattering by using blast simulation techniques (i.e., JKSimblast) and observing the actual blast results with the help of a high-speed camera and multi-channel high frequency data acquisition systems. The fragmentation assessment was carried out by adopting Digital Image Analysis techniques and using the granularity software viz. Wipfrag. The blast instrumentation in the case study mine resulted in improvement in fragmentation of 12.76% and a direct savings in explosives cost of 28%. Geophysical techniques such as the seismic survey method have been used at Umrer Project, CIL to characterize the rock mass using the Multi Channel Analysis of Surface Waves system for selecting the explosives technoeconomically. The minimum deck thickness for mines of CIL using drill cuttings as decking materials should be 10 D, where D is the drill diameter. The estimation of blast performance on the basis of prescribed Powder Factor (i.e., kg of explosives per m3 of rock) is technically unscientific as the criterion of a good blast depends on many factors (i.e., good heave, loose muck, muck profile angle, ease of digging, uniform fragmentation). The present paper proposes a new methodology for techno-economic evaluation of blast performance. The new methodology involves four significant factors viz. specific energy consumed by the loading equipment, charge factor, productive yield and diggability index for assessing blast performance. The use of user-friendly, accurate, reliable, rugged and handy instruments in blasting will significantly improve mine productivity, equipment efficiency and economics. The improvement in blast performance, even by 1%, will provide a significant savings of $3.5 million USD per annum to CIL. It may be concluded with high degree of confidence that blast instrumentation at the mine level will influence the mine productivity and economics.

Good mine planning requires solid understanding of the ore body, rigorous standards and processes, robust and useful information technology and skilled people. Life of mine planning is key to identifying strategic direction for any mine and short range mine planning is key to delivering forecast and budget expectations. Mine planning at Kinross has been identified as a critical success factor and initiatives are being prepared to improve the quality of our plans and to build bench strength in our teams. The Kinross Way for Mine Planning (KWMP) has been developed and implemented to establish the standards to ensure a strong business foundation. This paper briefly describes the process used to develop the KWMP and presents a selection of mine planning best practice initiatives at Kinross mines.

"Kinross Gold Corporation’s Maricunga mine in Chile presents an ideal opportunity to apply the SART process to a heap leach operation. Given increasing levels of cyanide complexed copper in current pregnant solutions from Maricunga heaps (over 300 ppm Cu), there is a need to reduce these levels and decrease cyanide consumption and cost. Additionally, a means of disposing of this copper is required, preferably as a saleable product. The well published SART process applied to gold-copper cyanide solutions was selected as it allows rapid precipitation of cyanide soluble copper as a relatively pure copper sulphide. The process also allows effective recovery and recycle of cyanide back to the heap leach operation.This paper reviews the SART process chemistry and presents a summary of SART bench-scale and pilot plant testwork completed by Kinross. Key design parameters and engineering aspects of the proposed plant at Maricunga are discussed. SART plant operating costs and net revenue analysis are included and illustrate the compelling economics of installing a SART process plant. "INTRODUCTIONOn November 10, 1982 Nor and a Inc signed an agreement with Golden Sceptre Resource Ltd. and Goliath Gold Mines Ltd. to construct a mine and milling facility.The Golden Giant mine is located in the Marathon area of north - western Ontario, immediately north of Highway 17 and about- 3.5 km west of Highway 614.With the exception of selected unit processes, the mill was designed for a nominal throughput of 2500 tonnes per day with early operating data to be used to identify sections requiring possible expansion to achieve an ultimate throughput of 3000 tonnes per day.Commissioning of the highly instrumented milling complex which includes crushing, grinding, cyanidation, and carbon in pulp processes commenced in February 1985. After water testing various sub-circuits from grinding through tailings, waste ore was introduced to ensure proper mechanical and electrical operation of process equipment.The first ore was milled as a mixture with waste on March 4, 1985. The first gold bullion was poured April 6, 1985.Initially, ore was only available from mine development at a rate of 700 t/d, which was milled at a minimum rate of 1200 t/d. While regular weekly shut downs of two to three days was useful for mechanical maintenance, changes, and modifications, process tuning was more difficult due to the non-steady operation. As increased quantities of ore became available, regular weekly shutdowns tapered off and process operation improved accordingly. For testing purposes and as ore was available, mill throughput was increased regularly to 2300 t/d and for very short periods of time to nearly 3000 t/d.No major design or operating problem has been encountered to date. The following is a brief description of the milling process and various operating highlights. Process flowsheets are shown in Figures 1 through 6."

"The objective of this expert system application in a copper-zinc concentrator, is to increase the availability of assay data through substitution for erroneous data. The assay data is used by the Operations personnel and automatic process control strategies to control flotation circuit performance. Two online X-ray fluorescence analysis systems analyze 24 streams across four divisions to provide the required data. Data availability of individual streams average 90% while the resulting circuit availabilities are 70%. The unavailability of correct data results from mechanical, X-ray or process problems. The erroneous data can be identified by process experts using knowledge relating stream interdependencies and historical process behaviour. An expert system was devised to provide real time identification of erroneous data and substitute for that data with the ultimate aim of improving metallurgical response by both the operator and automatic control systems.The paper discusses the early development work and architecture of the knowledge base designed using Neuron Data's expert shell NEXPERT.INTRODUCTIONThis paper describes the early development of an expert system (ES) prototype at the Kidd Creek concentrator. The project is a joint undertaking of the Kidd Creek Division of Falconbridge Limited and CANMET. Kidd Creek entered into the project to apply heuristic rules to the XRF assay data to improve the metallurgical control of the flotation process by increasing availability of analysis data. This project provided a problem of suitable size and future expandability while making use of a wide base of in-house expertise and experience. Another important benefit is the introduction of expert system technology to the site providing tools and experience for future system selection and technology application. CANMET has an on-going interest in assessing various aspects of ES technology (hardware, software, knowledge engineering, integration) while addressing problems in process operations that could most readily benefit from the technique. CANMET's role in the project was to provide project assistance, financial support, substitution algorithm assistance and software for data substitution. The knowledge bases (rules) have now been completed and are to be tested in the online environment."

"THE GOLD MINING REGION of Timmins - Val d'Or, astride the Ontario-Quebec border, has long suffered the effects of rising costs during the period when the U.S. price of gold was fixed at $35 per ounce. The federal government, through such assistance programs as that set up under the Emergency Gold Mining Assistance Act (E.G.M.A. ) in 1948, has subsidized the gold mining communities of Canada for a total of over $300 million to March 31, 1972. Of this, the Timmins - Val d'Or ""gold belt"" has received more than twothirds, almost $220 million. In spite of these continuous subsidies, only 12 gold mines are still producing in the Timmins - Val d'Or belt, whereas 71 mines have received subsidies for some period since 1948. The vital question is how the communities previously supported principally by the mining of gold will survive in the long run, as many of the older mines either are already depleted or are quickly becoming so. With the rising price of gold on the 'free market in recent months, prospects look a little brighter for the time being. Even with the increased official price of U.S. $38, which made the maximum government subsidized price about $48 per ounce, gold mines have not sold any gold to the government since January 1972 and some stopped doing so months before that. The populace of the region has not been enthusiastic about relocation nor about extensive retraining programs in the past and probably will not be in the future. So, when the remaining gold mines become depleted, the old problems of community depression will remain."

Different individuals have calculated the boundary stresses around elliptical openings in an infinite elastic medium for various conditions of loading. With caution, such calculations are useful in indicating stress trends in mining. This paper illustrates an application to caving operations and suggests that abnormal field stress would have an adverse effect. Introduction GELDART and Udd (1), applying elastic theory, confirmed, and set out graphically, the stress distributions on the surface of elliptical openings with axis ratios varying from 1.0 (a circle) to infinity (a crack). The loading conditions varied from uniaxial to hydrostatic, and inclinations for the opening, with respect to the stress axis, varied from 0° to 90°. As most mine openings can be generalized into this elliptical conception, the usefulness of the presentation lies in the fact that given reasonable estimates for the stress ratio, the axis ratio, and its inclination, then the trend in stress concentrations as an opening develops can be readily approximated.

BHP Billiton?s Cannington facility is a mining and minerals processing plant near Mt. Isa in Central Queensland, Australia, producing silver, lead and zinc. Mine ore is processed in a concentrator, which consists of grinding, flotation, thickening and filtration. Grinding is carried out in a fully autogenous (AG) mill. The mill operates in closed circuit with a pebble crusher. Throughput is approximately 380 tph. Cyclone overflow from the grinding circuit is fed into a flotation circuit for the recovery of lead, zinc and silver. Two concentrates are produced (lead and zinc), which are then thickened and filtered. The filtered concentrate is transported by road to a rail receiving station. From here the concentrate is railed to port in Townsville for shipment to the smelter. Matrikon and Engineers at BHP Billiton?s Cannington Mine have used ProcessACT to develop a flexible, nonlinear dynamic simulator for the grinding circuit to further enhance process understanding, as well to investigate various optimization strategies. An online charge volume estimator was also developed for the AG mill to aid in the understanding of overload conditions, which for the previous two months had been the primary contributor to downtime. The models were developed using a combination of first-principles modeling along with input-output dynamic responses. Examples of models used include: Morrell ?C? model for power and charge shoulder/toe angle prediction; Whiten?s mixing model for breakage and hold-up; Nageswararao cyclone model for predicting cut size; slurry recovery and water recovery. The composite model simulates system dynamics starting from the stockpile reclaim system and finishing at the feed for the flotation process. The objective was to provide a tool that assisted Cannington in understanding their Grinding Circuit and allowed them to develop and evaluate circuit optimization strategies. BHP Billiton Cannington Mine is now considering development of a Grinding Circuit Optimizer utilizing the models developed for the simulator.

Optimization of the mining sequence in terms of economics (maximizing net present value) often leads to multi-front mining methods generating pillars. Significant resources are tied up in these pillars, but mining them is often challenging. In order to improve our understanding of rock mass behaviour while extracting these pillars, an extensive monitoring program has been designed and implemented at Vale?s Coleman mine (Sudbury, Canada). The program focuses on existing and new technologies that have potential for monitoring deformation and rock mass property changes. It includes both active and passive methods: gravimeters, multi-point borehole extensometers, fiber optic strain meters, fixed and portable three-component seismic arrays, borehole imaging and sonic logging, and, repeated LiDAR surveys. This paper reports results from an initial project phase, when only a small amount of mining has taken place. The goal was to test and compare technologies in order to assess their sensitivity, accuracy, repeatability and suitability for underground mining conditions. Value is gained by having a broad range of monitoring devices running side by side, enabling comparisons and benchmarking.

Trends in the mean and/or variance are a longstanding challenge in mineral resource modeling. Geologic modeling and/or grade domaining are often employed to account for heterogeneities in mineral grades; however, this is only practical up to a certain point since the number of data available for reliable model construction can be severely reduced. In such cases, trends remain present in certain geologic/grade domains and directly impact the modeling methodology; the trend must either be handled explicitly or a suitable approach is adopted to implicitly account for it. This is highly dependent on understanding the source of the trend. We propose an approach that detects the source of non-stationarity, which is based on quantifying the impact of non-stationarity in the mean and the variance via the semivariogram. By expanding the methodof- moments approximation of the semivariogram, we decompose the experimental semivariogram is into three terms: 1) trend in mean component, 2) trend in variance component and 3) stationary component. We can then assess the source of trend by calculating the contribution of each component at every lag. Two cases are presented to illustrate this tool. Firstly, a synthetic reference model is simulated and different trend patterns are added; the influence of these patterns in the experimental semivariogram calculation are analyzed and discussed. Secondly, a real dataset is considered where the impact due to the presence of trends in the mean and variance are assessed. The results of this paper reveal the semivariogram to be a tremendously powerful tool in determining the source of the trend. This insight may be useful in the selection of a suitable modeling approach for resource estimation.

L?utilisation du remblai en pâte dans les exploitations en vrac est de plus en plus importante. Puisque la technologie existe pour fabriquer du remblai en pâte sans construire une usine coûteuse, il est maintenant possible d?élargir le domaine d?utilisation du remblai en pâte pour y inclure des gisements filoniens où le besoin annuel de remblai est moindre. Dans certains cas, l?utilisation du remblai en pâte pourrait permettre de réaliser d?importantes économies telles que la réduction de la dilution, la stabilité des ouvertures, la récupération d?une plus grande partie du minerai par la réduction de la taille des piliers et l?entreposage de moins de résidus à la surface. L?ampleur des économies est parfois difficile à chiffrer mais il est tout de même important d?en tenir compte lors de la décision d?utiliser du remblai en pâte puisque ce sont souvent ces économies qui seront déterminantes. Différentes méthodes d?extraction avec remblai en pâte appliquées aux mines filoniennes seront présentées. Des défis et les solutions reliés à l?utilisation du remblai en pâte à la Mine Doyon seront discutés.

"The consolidated rockfill at Kidd Creek Mines is a weakly cemented, minus 15 cm aggregate which posed problems for conventional drill/blast drifting methods. Consequently, lateral access to mineable ore adjacent to backfilled areas was gained by drifting around the fill in shattered rock.In mid-1987, Kidd Creek Mines began to investigate means of mechanically excavating drifts in backfill . The results of this investigation led to a trial program using a Dosco MK-2A Roadheader to excavate the required drifts in backfill.The roadheader was tested at Kidd Creek Mines from July to November 1988, in 28-735 X /C to be used as the top access for drilling and blasting 32-74/ ST. During this period, the roadheader excavated 54 m of a 4.3 m by 3. 7 m arched drift in backfill. Cutting rates over the period averaged 0.8 m/cutting hour as projected with a daily high of 2.0 m/cutting hour.Wood-lagged 2-piece steel arches on 1.2 m centres were chosen as ground support for the trial. Shotcrete will be tested in a roadheader drive for its potential to improve productivity by replacing the steel arches.The trial program included evaluations of point-attack picks, two sizes of cutter motor, 20 MPa (3000 psi) water-assisted cutting, cuttings-removal systems, and environmental control devices."

The Voisey’s Bay deposit contains a trace amount of cadmium, which reports to solution during pressure leaching of the nickel concentrate at Vale’s Long Harbour Hydrometallurgy Plant, and must be removed to produce high quality nickel cathode. In 2006, Vale approached Sherritt Technologies to collaborate on the development of a process for removing cadmium to low levels (<1 mg/L) in the nickel raffinate. Following successful bench scale and pilot plant testing at Sherritt’s laboratories, the cadmium removal process was then moved through engineering and construction, culminating in the successful commissioning and startup of a cadmium removal circuit at the Long Harbour Hydrometallurgy Plant in 2017. This paper presents the results of this collaboration and the challenges that were encountered through each stage of development, as well as current results from operation of the commercial cadmium removal circuit. INTRODUCTION Vale’s Long Harbour Processing Plant, with a nameplate capacity of 50,000 t/y nickel, began operation in 2014. In addition to electrolytic nickel rounds, the plant also produces electrolytic cobalt rounds and copper cathode. The Long Harbour Processing Plant uses a unique hydrometallurgical process developed by Vale Base Metals Technology Centre, as shown in Figure 1, to treat a nickel sulphide concentrate produced at the Voisey’s Bay mine and mill located in northern Labrador (VBN concentrate) (Stevens et al., 2009).

"This paper reviews the chemistry involved in the recovery of gold from cyanide solution with anion-exchange resins, and also discusses the most critical aspects of the engineering of an effective resin-in-pulp (RIP) process. As far as the chemistry is concerned, the conclusions reached by a great many researchers, as well as the performance of the only operating RIP plant in the Western World, at the Golden Jubilee Mine in South Africa, support the view that the process is technically viable and, in many cases, could prove to be more attractive economically than alternative processes such as zinc cementation and carbon-in-pulp (CIP). On the engineering side, there is still a need for further development before larger scale ( > 50,000 tpm) RIP plants can be designed, built and operated with confidence. However, the experiences gained during nearly 3 years of operation of the Golden Jublee RIP plant indicate that the process can be engineered with confidence for smaller operations ( < 50,000 tpm), and this will probably be the scope of application of the first-generation RIP plants. INTRODUCTIONThe use of anion-exchange resins in gold processing has, for a number of years, been proposed as an alternative to more conventional processes such as zinc cementation and carbon adsorption, and detailed research programs that have been carried out at a number of laboratories have demonstrated the technical viability of the process. Falconbridge Ltd Raglan Mine has been in production since 1998 and has produced annually some 900 000T of ore grading 3.1% nickel, 0.9% copper and 0.06% cobalt. The mine is located in Nunavik, Northern Quebec. The current mine life is estimated at approximately 20 years. Reserves are composed of numerous small ore bodies situated across a 65 km strike length. Planning the extraction of the ten small mineralized zones represents a great challenge to optimize. The overall objective is to maximize the company?s return on net assets. Actual planning uses computerized technology tools like Automod and Mine2-4D, and a conventional discounted cash flow method (DCF) of calculating net present value (NPV). The complex setting of Raglan could benefit from advance valuation techniques such as the real options method (RO). This paper will present the characteristics if the mines that make it a good candidate to use RO to gain further insight.
