"This paper discusses the importance of considering residence time distribution (RTD) in the design of flotation and mixing circuits and in the analysis of operating problems. The experiences and successes of Brunswick Mining in this area are covered and include: the development of a practical RTD measurement technique using pulp conductivity, baffle installation to improve the RTD of existing process equipment, and the method in which RTD considerations have been used to design the newest flotation and conditioning operations. IntroductionThe use of residence time distributions (RTDs) in the design and analysis of unit operations is well understood by the chemical engineering profession in while mineral processing engineers have tended to rely on empirical and rule-of-thumb factors. For example, in scale up from laboratory and pilot test results to full size flotation plant design, empirical rule s are often used to establish residence time and number of cells in the bank. Coleman suggests a factor of at least 2, and up to 5 for gold ores, be applied to laboratory determined flotation times. This is further illustrated in Table I, taken from Denver equipment.The number of cells in series to achieve the required retention time while minimizing short-circuiting has generated a variety of conclusions (Table 2). Obviously there is less than complete agreement on the subject. Young notes that a clear difference of opinion has emerged and cites as extremes, (i) the publications of Outokumpum showing unimpaired recovery for its largest machines (38 m3) compared to equivalent retention times for numerous smaller machines, and (ii) the experiences of Eastern European countries where the practice is to install banks of 30 unit s or more, operating in series, often with unit retention times of only a fraction of a minute.The empirical factors used by engineers presumably account for other than tested feed conditions, inefficiencies in large continuous machines, inevitable day-to-day circuit disruptions, gradual equipment deterioration and any other safety factor the engineer feels compelled to incorporate. An understanding of RTD concepts and techniques should help the practicing mineral engineer to develop more soundly based factors. This paper relates the experiences of Brunswick Mining in using RTD techniques in the unit operations of flotation and mixing."

"A kinetic model was developed for the conditioning and flotation processes of an industrial lead concentrate dezincing circuit. The models were incorporated into a flowsheet simulator. Simulation results demonstrate the advantages of split conditioning of coarse and fine particles and the potential of this approach for the production of the heuristics required for the development of intelligent control strategies.The conditioning model relates the proportions of activated and hydrophobic surfaces and residual reagent concentrations to activator and collector reagent flowrates. The model accounts for the solids and water flowrates, and for the solids grade and size distribution. The flotation model uses the predicted proportion of hydrophobic mineral surface, the aeration rate and the froth depth to estimate cell, bank and circuit performances. IntroductionFlotation has been the object of modelling and simulation studies for more than two decades. The process is usually modelled as a kinetic one in which the particle flotation rate constants are key parameters. Rate constants are related to the operating variables (pH, reagent flowrates, aeration rate, etc), however these relationships are seldom established in the literature.In spite of the large amount of literature on flotation modelling and simulation, few papers deal with the interaction between flotation rate constants and operating variables. This important gap, which was identified in the early seventies by Woodburn (l970), still exists. One of the first attempts to include operating conditions in a flotation simulator was made by King (l973), who explicitly introduced the aeration rate into an air bubble loading model. Lynch et al. (1981) used an empirical model to relate the proportion of slow floating particles to the ratio of collector per ton of ore. Such empirical relationships are difficult to calibrate and cumbersome to use when an activator and a collector are added to slurries in which particle size distribution and surface characteristics are changing. Eascur and Herbst (l982) relate in a fundamental way the mineral flotation rate constants to the aeration rate, froth depth, agitation and frother concentration, however the model does not account for reagent flowrates. Niemi et al. (1982) have proposed a model for the conditioning of minerals and included it into a conventional flotation simulator."

Since the early 1980s, surface hard-rock mining companies have searched for a blast movement model to enable grade control optimization efforts. Significant time and money were spent attempting to create blast simulations to aid post-blast grade control. Despite nearly 40 years of effort, practical blast movement models remained elusive until computing power reached levels that make real-time simulation possible. From the mid-1990s, mines have been creating in-situ grade control polygons and translating the polygon nodes horizontally to account for blast movement. In many cases, objects are placed in the blast volume and located post-blast to provide local vectors for these node translations. This method was always a compromise between practicality (2D) and reality (3D), but it was the only viable solution that matched the needs of operations. This study considers 21 blasts and evaluates the incremental value achieved by new processes unlocked through 3D modelling, while investigating challenges, limitations, and opportunities for each method.

"In salt and potash mines, the time-dependent deformation mechanism should be clearly understood based on in situ measurements to predict the performance of a mining design. In this study, in situ deformation measurements from the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) and other salt and potash mines were used to determine the transition time from the primary to the secondary creep stage and to investigate the influence of adjacent excavations such as a nearby tunnel excavation, panel excavation and/or pillar extraction on rock deformation. IntroductionThe deformational behaviour of underground excavations in salt and potash mines is complex due to the time-dependency of the rocks. When the material properties are determined from laboratory tests, they should be carefully applied to in situ conditions, because in situ conditions are completely different from laboratory conditions. For instance, in situ deformation measurements show that the deformation rate decreases with time similar to those observed in the laboratory during the early stages. However, the rapid decrease of deformation rate does not come from the microscopic strain hardening effect observed in laboratory tests, but mainly from stress relief around the opening after its excavation (Baar, 1977). It is, therefore, recommended to undertake in situ measurements and use them to understand the deformation mechanism.Even though in situ measurements are widely accepted as important information for understanding the deformation mechanism of salt and potash (Barr, 1971; Kovari and Amstad, 1993), not many publications have focused on the fundamentals of data measurement, the application of the measured data, and the development of data analysis techniques. Recently, several new techniques for better understanding the deformation mechanism of rock salt have been developed that are based on in situ measurements. Kwon and Miller (1995) developed a new technique for describing the actual deformational behaviour of an underground excavation in rock salt. The migration of “zero strain boundary,” which represents a no movement boundary around an underground excavation, could be calculated by the technique developed by Kwon and Miller (1996). Kwon and Wilson (1997, 1998) applied neural network techniques to in situ deformation measurements to predict the deformational behaviour of the underground excavations at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) located in the United States.In this study, in situ deformation measurementsfrom the WIPP site and other salt and potash mines in the United States were extensively analyzed to understand the deformation mechanism of the underground excavations in the rock mass."

Non-ferrous metals find their applications in smartphones, tablets and computers. These materials with their particular properties are the basis of our modern life. SMS group is well prepared for this huge market and for growing future challenges. A large contribution here is the new joint venture PolyMet Solutions that was founded by SMS group and Mettop, an Austrian engineering company, with the objective to develop new technical solutions for the primary copper production lines as well as for non-ferrous metals starting with the primary smelting of concentrate and ending with the electrolysis. PolyMet Solutions provides the process know-how whereas SMS group supplies the plants and equipment and Mettop the key components. SMS group and Mettop also cooperate in the field of tankhouse technology. Together with Montanwerke Brixlegg AG, Mettop has developed together with a parallel flow technology (METTOP-BRX Technology), allowing a current efficiency of above 98 % at a current density of 420 A/m², which is a milestone in copper electrolysis. For the secondary copper production route, SMS group and PolyMet Solutions developed an innovative refining furnace (PolyRefine) for the smelting and refining of copper scrap. The refined copper is directly charged to the Contirod line to produce copper rods and wires. The innovative cooling solutions of SMS and PolyMet Solutions come into play where furnaces have to stand the highest loads and stresses, for instance in areas of very high temperatures or temperature fluctuations, aggressive exhaust gases and slags, or at critical spots such as taphole areas. Custom-tailored cooling systems for furnace vessels make sure varying loads are compensated in a targeted and effective manner. The solutions include air cooling, spray cooling, cooling technologies with integrated copper elements such as CFM (Composite Furnace Modular) cooling systems, plate and finger coolers. The major innovation in the field of furnace cooling is the ILTEC (Ionic Liquid Cooling) Technology which paves the way for increased plant safety. This revolutionary, patented cooling technology is jointly marketed by Mettop and SMS group. It permits water-free cooling to be implemented and thus makes operation safe wherever it is applied. The control of carbon concentration in a counter current carbon absorption circuit is critical to optimise gold recovery. MINTEK has developed a carbon movement controller to address this potentially problematic area in gold extraction. This controller reduces operator interaction by automating carbon movement. Elution schedules are entered into the control system, which then moves the carbon through the circuit into the first adsorption tank until enough carbon is available for elution. This is done while maintaining the specified carbon profile within the circuit. MINTEK has also developed an online-carbonconcentration- meter to measure carbon concentration in pulp. The meter uses an ultrasonic measurement technique. Long term testing has shown the measurement to be robust and require minimal maintenance. Results from a gold mine in South Africa’s well known Witwatersrand gold producing area has shown a decrease in soluble gold loss between 30 - 50% when the controller was used.

"Parameters f or design and development of an emergency hoist system (Fig. I) were submitted to Timberland Equipment Limited of Woodstock, Ontario by the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Mining Limited.The unit is the first of its kind in Canada. Not only does it comply with the province of Saskatchewan's mining regulations, but has the added advantage of being completely mobile and self-contained.As well as being useful in the mining industry, the mobile hoist unit could be used in other emergency situations such as rescuing people trapped in wells.JustificationRevisions to the Mines Regulations under Section 13 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1977, of the Province of Saskatchewan stipulate as follows:"" Section 410 .04(4) The Mine Employer shall make adequate provision at every mine where any worker is hoisted in a shaft not equipped with a manway to enable an y such worker trapped in a conveyance in the shaft to be rescued . "" It was not possible to equip the shafts at PCS Mining' s Divisions with "" manways"" and therefore an alternative was required.BackgroundThe Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Mining Limited, a subsidiary of the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan, operates four potash mines. Of these, three, Cory, Rocanville and Lanigan Divisions are wholly owned while the fourth, Allan Division, is 40% owned by Kidd Creek Mines Ltd., but managed by PCS Mining. The four underground operations all have a service and production shaft.From 1979 to 1981 the PCS Mining Division, along with Central Canada Potash, were developing an idea to use the existing ground-mounted timberland hoist at Lanigan as an emergency hoist. This hoist was used in the past for rope-up work at both Rocanville and Lanigan and other potash mine s. The Department of Labour at this time had concerns about the time it would take to load, t ran sport and re-install the hoist on a foundation when needed for an emergency. Weight and size made this particular unit very cumbersome for transporting.In addition, the speed at which this hoist operates is too slow for rescue work. When the Department of Labour expressed concern that this unit would be unsuitable for these rea sons, a search for a suitable unit was initiated.The project responsibility for procuring an emergency hoist for the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Mining Limited was assigned to the author, a shaft/ hoist specialist a t PCS Mining."

Abstract -There are a number of sedimentary exhalative massive sulfide (SEDEX) deposits in the Proterozoic Langshan-Zhaertai rift at the western segment of the northern margin of the North China platform in China, including more than ten large, medium and small deposits located in a belt of 300 km EW by 50 km to 100 km NS, with large Cu, Pb, Zn, Ag, and S reserves. In several representative SEDEX deposits in the rift, the mineralizing elements are prominently zoned, horizontally or vertically, with Cu decreasing but Pb increasing from west to east, Cu decreasing but Zn increasing from bottom to top, and Zn restricted to the bottom half. The ore-hosting rocks, characterized by a clear manganese halo, have developed a polymetallic mineralization in positive relation with their carbon contents. Their isotopic aspects are: ?34S has relatively large positive values, fluctuating between +5‰ and +35‰, compared with Pb isotopic compositions which are less variable, with a model age of 1600 Ma to 1800 Ma, showing that they are mantle-derived. The mineralizing materials were associated undoubtedly with the contemporaneously faulting events in the rift. The deposits owe their origin to seafloor exhalation, with sedimentary rocks as their hosts.

Early evaluations of Pasquia Hills kerogen shale deposits by Geological Survey of Canada, Saskatchewan Geological Survey, Manitoba Energy and Mines and Sun Oil Company, using modified Fischer Assay, Rock-Eval and other techniques, estimated recoverable reserves of about 2.6x109 barrels of oil in areas favorable for strip-mining; each metric ton of ore was determined to yield about 30 L to 50 L of shale oil remarkably high in aromatic compounds. Western Petrochemical Corp. (WPC) is holding two Oil Shale Exploration Permits covering about 76,635 hectares in the Pasquia Hills Region of eastern Saskatchewan and conducting a 15-corehole drilling program to determine stratigraphic correlation on both first and second white specks kerogen shale. In this program, correlation will be established between oil yield and oil quality, using different retort techniques, including modified Fischer Assay, steam retort and Rock-Eval. Results will lead to further resource evaluation and to a preliminary engineering design for a shale processing plant, including selection of retort process, upgrading of shale oil to petrochemical feedstock, hydrogen management, energy balance and evaluation of environmental impact.

Following the initial development of the zinc-lead blast furnace, efforts have been directed both at increasing the scope of the process and increasing the cash return. The paper reviews the process developments which enable the process to smelt efficiently a range of material which encompasses high-grade zinc sulphide concentrates. mixed concentrates, Waelz oxide, zinc ashes and other materials blended to give a furnace feed ranging from 25 to 65% zinc and from 1 to 25% lead, with a copper-lead ratio exceeding 1 to 8. The paper also reviews the process developments which have enabled the capacity of a furnace and condenser system of standard size to be boosted from 30,000 to 80,000 tonnes/annum. The benefits achieved are used as a justification for continuation of the development of the zinc-lead blast furnace. Predictions are made of the benefits expected from further developments.

"This paper presents the results of a detailed feasibility study carried out to investigate whether a low-grade deep underground mine of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd., closed since 1975, could be made more productive and profitable by the introduction of new mining technology. For this purpose, recent advances in mine design and development concepts, larger and better designed machines, such as hydraulic drills, high-pressure down-the-hole machines, LHDs, new blasting concepts, more efficient and improved stoping methods, and ground control technology were considered. Technical and economic analyses incorporated the latest computer-based techniques. The mine was reopened in 1979 and the paper concludes with an assessment of actual progress and performance compared with that planned and forecast.IntroductionThe East Mine orebody, located between the Falconbridge Mine and Inco's Cryderman Mine in the Sudbury District of Ontario, has been in production since 1956. From 1956 to 1978, about 5.6 million tons of ore had been mined from this ore zone. The ore body is low grade and was developed as a cut-and-fill operation. Due to high operating costs, the mine has been shut down several times during economic downturns. The latest closure was in 1975 due to a lower demand for metal.In 1978, investigations were initiated to assess the economic and technical feasibility of mining this ore using new developments in mining technology. In this study, consideration was given to the application of bulk mining methods with a potential for higher productivity, trackless development utilizing efficient LHD machines and hydraulic drills, new blasting and fragmentation concepts, and new ground control technology. Advanced computer techniques, such as finite element, for mine design and rate of return with discounted cash flow analyses for the economic comparison- of various mining options were utilized for a rapid and comprehensive assessment during the feasibility stage."

To achieve renovation work without noise, the authors developed techniques of manufacturing pre-cut interior finishing components for renovation work. In this paper, to achieve the system of pre-cut interior finishing components, the authors describe a measuring method of reinforced-concrete structure by 3D laser scanner and then describe a method of making a design of pre-cut interior finishing components with the polygon model. Using these two methods, the steps of manufacturing pre-cut interior finishing components consist of the following four steps: First, measure the building shape using a 3D laser scanner. Secondly, integrate a point cloud data and retrieve the markings on the floor. Then, create a polygon model of the building based on the point cloud data. Lastly, make a drywall design using a polygon model. To evaluate the technique feasibility of manufacturing pre-cut interior finishing components, the authors have conducted an experiment of the finishing interior work of the drywall. Using pre-cut interior finishing components, the authors have been able to achieve interior finishing work without noise.

"The operations of a large-scale open-cut mine are simulated to produce a user-oriented interactive digital model. SIMULA is chosen as the programming language and a sophisticated data base system is designed to consider the complex information network of large mines. The main features of the program are the mine planning and mine evaluation modules. These modules are responsible for the computation of truck-shovel performance and other equipment details in a mine. Stochastic methods are employed to generate event times. The use of a Data Base Management System and the data base provide an efficient method of information storage and retrieval. Truck allocation techniques have been examined in detail and comparisons between random dispatching and conventional methods are made. The model is intended for mine operators and engineers and the program is well structured and very readable. It is hoped that these features will make the model readily acceptable.IntroductionThe Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Queensland has been conducting research into computer simulation methods in mining since 1972. The research has been mainly applied to actual operations, with both open-cut and underground mining being equally emphasized. The results of the research to date have not only strengthened the methodology of the approach to complex mining problems, but have also increased confidence in the use of modelling and computer simulation technique s in mining.The model described in this paper translates a complex LHD situation into a user-oriented interactive digital model using SIMULA. The present methods of evaluating truck dispatching and trolley assist are tedious and laborious. This model provide s the engineer with readily acceptable means of rapidly assessing the relative merits of these techniques in a large-scale open-pit operation. Poor utilization figures in many current operations (for example, 40% for trucks, 70% for shovels) are of serious concern to mine officials and computer-controlled dynamic truck dispatching systems have been considered by some of these mines to improve equipment utilization ."

Mechanical cells are the dominant unit operation in base metal rougher flotation applications worldwide. As economic demand for metals increase, and as the feasible ore grades decrease, the installed capacity of mechanical flotation units worldwide has greatly increased, adding significant capital and operating cost. One opportunity to improve this situation is to use fundamental knowledge to make the industrial flotation process more efficient. A key insight is that the flotation process can be optimized by dividing the processing of the pulp into two distinct fluidic environments; a collection cell where air and pulp mix in a highly energetic compartment, and a low energy gravity separation cell. This is the basis of the “2-stage flotation device” that has been patented by Eriez and marketed under the tradename StackCell™. Two industrial case studies will be presented to highlight the potential metallurgical and commercial advantages of the StackCell. In the first, a train consisting of three pilot scale StackCells (each 0.6 metre diameter) was run in parallel with a train of conventional mechanical cells in a major copper concentrator and benchmarked against a batch Denver test. In the second, the performance of a 3 metre diameter StackCell in a nickel sulfide cleaning application was benchmarked against a batch Denver test. The flotation kinetics observed in the StackCells were 2.4 to 2.9 times faster when compared with the lab Denver test. In the first case study, the kinetics of the StackCell was about six times faster than conventional mechanical cells. It is hypothesized that the efficiency improvement in kinetics is because of reduced “drop-back” during the froth recovery phase, which is reduced because of the reduction in the shear that is present in a conventional mechanical tank cell. This result suggests that a 2-stage flotation system can be used to reduce the working volume of flotation units by five to six times. This would allow operators to significantly reduce the size of their flotation lines for a comparable flotation objective. Some discussion will follow about the scale-up criteria, maintenance and operability issues, comparisons of layout, and possible cost savings. INTRODUCTION The solution that most equipment suppliers have offered to reduce the cost of mechanical flotation equipment over the last 30 years has been to increase the size of the flotation unit cell (Mankosa, 2017). For example, three 100 m3 machines with three smaller motors, mechanisms and control valves could be replaced with a geometrically similar 300 m3 with a larger version of each ancillary component. While there are some efficiencies and cost improvements to be gained by this approach, it does not take advantage of fundamental insights into the flotation process, and it does not represent a step-change in terms of process design or economic benefit for the customer. The advantage of the “bigger is better” approach is that there is past experience of incremental improvements by making cells larger and there is a well-established scale-up method, which allows practitioners to estimate equipment capital costs based on very simple laboratory test- work. A different paradigm, which is gaining interest rapidly is to use a unit operation in which it is easier to optimize the flotation process, which will be described in this paper. This approach is often referred to “2- stage flotation”. Because this approach is new, it is important to benchmark it against existing conventional technology and to demonstrate a robust methodology for sizing equipment and flowsheets. This paper aims to address these issues with two case studies.

Variables such as acid concentration, temperature, reaction time, solid/acid ratio, agitation speed and particle size are correlated to the recovery of niobium oxide.The relatively low activation energy (1,86 Kcal/mole) and the dependence of reaction rate on agitation suggest that the process is diffusion controlled. The optimum conditions for extracting niobium oxide from the leach solution, using either methyl isobutyl ketone or tributyl phosphate have been determined.IntroductionMost of the commercial production of niobium and tantalum has been derived from the treatment of columbite - tantalite minerals.In recent years (1960) , pyrochlore mineral has been found to be an alternate source of niobium . This mineral varies widely in composition and contains in addition to the main elements of calcium , sodium and niobium, some tantalum, fluorine, rare earth elements, titanium, alkali an d alkaline earth elements.It is well known that the province of Quebec possesses several pyrochlore niobium deposits totalling approximately 151 million ton s at an average 0.45% niobium oxide(1). One of the deposits, the St-Honor carbonatite, was brought into production by Niobec Inc. in 1976. Flotation o f this material produces a concentrate of about 60% Nb205(2).In view of an expanding niobium market in recent years and the presence of large niobium deposits in the province, a research and development program was initiated at the Centre de Recherches Miner ales to evaluate known processes for the separation of niobium and tantalum from each other as well as their purification . "The paper presents a scale-up and design method of vertical screw stirred mill, in which the closed circuit of mill and hydrocyclone was assumed as one factor, theoretically regardless the affects inside system of the mill and hydrocylone. The specific energy is chosen as a scale-up criterion, based on the premise that when fed the same feed material, mills of different sizes delivering the same specific energy will yield products.Batch grinding tests are conducted to determine the specific energy, and combined with industrial production data, scale-up and design of vertical screw stirred mill for industrial production are accomplished. Having developed this method for the vertical screw stirred mill used in regrinding duty of iron ore in Ma Steel, it has now been successfully applied in other installations.INTRODUCTIONThe Towermill was developed in Japan in the 1950s, by the Tower Mill Kubota Corporation, it was fine and ultra-fine grinding mill of the metallic ores and concentrates. Due to the rapid development of metal mining and useful minerals disseminated fine, fine grinding and ultrafine grinding equipment has also been more wide used in minerals processing industry. Typical fine and ultra-fine grinding mil are the Vertimill and Stirred Media Detritor (SMD) Mill of Metso, Eirich Towemill, Outotec HIGmill, FLSmidth VXPmill, Xstrata Isamill and the vertical screw stirred mill (JM) of CRIMM, etc.JM series of vertical screw stirred mill were invented by Changsha Research Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in the 1980s. Energy saving and consumption reducing have been achieved through the optimization and engineering practice. More than 500 units JM series of vertical screw stirred mill are used in the iron ore, copper ore, copper-molybdenum ore, molybdenum ore, Pb-Zn ore and Au ore."

One of the greatest threats of mining in hard coal mines are underground fires, which in the past often resulted in the mining disasters. Implementation of scientific principles of fire fighting into practice contributed to a significant reduction of fire hazard in coal mines. However, despite numerous achievements of science in the fight against the underground fires, they still occur creating a potential hazard for the miners and contributing to generate significant costs of fire-fighting operations, the temporary suspension of production or loss of longwalls. This concerns both spontaneous fires and exogenous ones. A significant decrease in the number of spontaneous fires was the result of cooperation between Polish scientists with experts in the field of new methods of fire hazard prediction and selection of new fire prevention and fire hazard monitoring methods. A significant part played here researchers from the Central Mining Institute. The original method of endogenous fire risk assessment based on calorimetric tests of coal and developed mathematical model of the process of coal self-heating allow to predict the risk of spontaneous fires and select proper fire prevention measures adequate to the involved risk. The frequency of exogenous fires is in the last few years is low, but their share in the total number of fires is relatively high and constitutes about 30%. This results from the prevention activities, carried out regularly in mines which are aimed at reducing the fire hazard connected with the use of fire-resistant conveyor belts and other non-metallic materials. Further directions to reduce the hazards connected with underground fires should focus on improving the methods for monitoring hazards together with automation of fire fighting operations.
