MR. J. F. MYERS, Consulting J3eneficiation Engineer, Greenwich, Conn.: In the written discussion contributed by Mr. F. C. Bond in item ( 2) (page 515), speaiking about the significance of the ratio of mill diameter to the make-up ball diameter, he states: "When this ratio exceeds 100 the power and capacity of the mill are de-creased"; and the paragraph ends with a reference to the 30 per cent ball volume "with some de-crease in mill capacity". I believe this broad statement is incorrect. When we are dealing with a non-cataracting mill, pre-ceded by a good rod mill, there is a slight increase in capacity, but the power does drop. The second point that I consider needs consideration is Mr. Bond's item (8), Proper Mill Speed (page 516). This paragraph should be qualified to cover single-stage mills only. It does not apply where a rod mill is followed by a non-cataracting ball mill. The statement as is, with no qualification, gives an erroneous idea of proper mill speeds.

"ForewordA symposium on base metal deposits was held in Bathurst, New Brunswick, from June 10-13, 1990, sponsored jointly by the Geological Surveys Branch of the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources and Energy, the New Brunswick Prospectors and Developers Association, and the Geology Division of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum. Papers prepared for the symposuim are being published as a series of articles in the CIM Bulletin. This third paper (the first was by Fyffe, et al., in Vol. 83, No. 938, the second is in this issue) in the series presents an overview of the tectonic setting and geochemistry of base metal deposits in the Eastern Townships of Quebec.ABSTRACTIt is well known that the classification system of volcanogenic massive sulphides (VMS) is based upon their metal content. This metal content, the result of hydrothermal solutions circulating within strata underlying the deposits, is generally thought to be related directly to two parameters: (1) the nature of the underlying stratigraphic sequence; and (2) the physico-chemical conditions that existed at the time of the hydrothermal event. Furthermore, these two parameters are, in turn, related to the tectonic setting. One must bear in mind that these parameters are diachronous and evolve with time. These factors are considered in our analysis of the major VMS deposits of the southeastern Quebec Appalachians. This analysis will describe the time and environment of formation of these deposits and integrate them into an evolving paleotectonic model.VMS deposits in the southeastern Quebec Appalachians formed during three distinct metallogenic episodes. During the first episode, which involved early closing of the Iapetus Ocean and associated destruction of oceanic crust by subduction processes(Early Ordovician?), cupriferous VMS deposits hosted by pillowed, mafic (boninitic) lava flows were formed in immature island-arc systems (""Cyprus-type"", e.g. Huntingdon deposit).In the second episode, which also occurred during the closure of Iapetus but at a later stage (Early to Middle Ordovician), mature island-arcs formed and hosted polymetallic VMS deposits (""Kuroko-type"", e.g. Eustis deposit).Finally, during culmination of the Taconic and/or Acadian orogenies (Middle Ordovician and/or Devonian), transtensional basins, associated with tholeitic to transitional mafic volcanism began to develop. Major sedimentation occurred contemporaneous with volcanism, and within this framework polymetallic VMS deposits were formed (""Besshi-type"", e.g. the Memphremagog deposit).Although incomplete, the proposed paleotectonic model represents the sequence of the tectonic settings that prevailed during the formation of the VMS deposits of the southeastern Quebec Appalachians."

"Five main lignite seams occur in the Tertiary Ravenscrag Formation in the Eastevan area, at depths of 100 feet or less. They are named, in ascending order: the Boundary, Estevan, Souris, Roche Percee and Short Creek seams. A total sequence of approximately 250 feet is represented by the coal beds and interstratified clays, silts and sands. Strata dip to the southeast at 25 feet per mile or less and trike northeast. Large areas underlain by coal seams at shallow depths are delineated. Reserve calculations are dependent on detailed information on seam thicknesses and feasible stripmining depths. The stratigraphically higher seams are thinner on the average than lower seams and this, together with the increase in elastic size fractions in higher strata, suggests a retreat of a Tertiary marine margin to the south during the closing depositional history of coal seams and associated strata."

It is well known that the specific density of minerals has adverse influence on the classification performance of a hydrocyclone, particularly when liberated high density minerals such as gold or uranium are present in sulphide ores. These liberated heavy minerals often misreport to the underflow and recirculate to the system. Such phenomena does result in serious issues in a closed-grinding circuit, such as overgrinding, leading to production of flaky particles (as in gold) or ultrafines, in addition to increased energy inefficiency. In plants which present gold liberated at coarser size, loss of gold due to cyclone inefficiency is sometimes prevented by incorporating gravity concentrators into the grinding circuit to recover the gold. The work reported in this paper looks at whether the effect of density will prevent successful rejection of liberated U-bearing minerals in the –10µm size range of a plant re-cleaner feed, which is necessary to minimize penalty U accumulation in a copper concentrator. The study was carried out using a cyclone rig with spigot diameter of 0.25 inches in combination with batch flotation. It was found that the density effect is almost negligible at particle sizes below 10µm. Consequently, the liberated U-bearing particles finer than 10 µm were successfully removed in the overflow stream as rejects and hence U grade in the copper concentrate remarkably reduced, by 16 ppm. Based on the results, de-sliming of the re-cleaner feed was recommended for plant trial and implementation.

WHEN times are booming and metal prices are high, most mining men pay little attention to the industrial mineral industry. However, when metal prices drop and mines close down, many mining eyes begin to scan the less glamorous non-metallic field. For some this proves a temporary diversion, but others find this branch of mining, with its generally more stable conditions, to their liking and enter it permanently. The resulting gradual influx of trained mining men into the industrial mineral industry ?has been one of several factors responsible for the rise in production of non-metallic materials in our Province. Another and ?perhaps the most important factor influencing the production of industrial minerals has been the growth in the population of British Columbia. Because most industrial minerals .are low priced and either heavy or bulky commodities they are normally sold on relatively local markets. Thus the extent of the development of the industrial mineral industry of a region is largely governed by the size of the population and the level of industrialization of that region. This point is well shown by com-paring population and industrial mineral production statistics for 1936, 1946, and 1956 (see Figure 1)9. Note that not only has the overall production rate grown with the population increase, but that the per capita production has risen greatly.

"IN 1975, Nova Scotia produced 1.8 million tons of coal with a FOB mine value of $47.6 million. Of this total, about 30 per cent or 600,000 tons was coking coal and the remainder was steam and industrial-grade coal. The Nova Scotia Power Corporation consumed 630,000 tons in three generating stations and 570,000 tons were sold to Sydney Steel for making coke for its steel operations. Exports, principally to Great Britain, comprised 370,000 tons in 1975 in addition to the 300,- 000 tons shipped to other provinces for use by cement and pulp and paper companies. In 1975, just over 100,000 tons of coking coal were imported into the province from Alberta. Before 1975, low-volatile coking coal was traditionally obtained from the United States. In 1975, production came from seven individual mines and one project involving reclamation from mine dumps in Pictou County. Of the seven producers, four are owned by the Cape Breton Development Corporation, a federal Crown corporation; the remaining three are small independent mines, but, even though small, they are sizeable contributors to the economies of their local areas. After 101 years of continuous operation, Devco's Princess mine was closed in 1975. The Nova Scotia coal industry, in terms of value, accounted for about half of total mineral production in 1975. The industry provides jobs for 3,000 men and women. It is also significant that in 1975 Nova Scotia produced about 6.5 per cent of Canada's total coal production of 28.3 million tons. "The operation of flotation circuits is often regarded as a combination of art and science. Expert systems offer a method by which the art may be captured and supervisory control of flotation circuits fully realized. Operating knowledge, the art, can be consistently employed to enhance regulatory control through the judicious application of an expert system. Using an expert system, a supervisory control routine was developed, and success- fully implemented, in the copper flotation circuit at Brenda Mines Ltd.The expert system ran in conjunction with regulatory PI controllers on a personal computer. The expert system received assays via an on-stream analyzer and adjusted regulatory loop set points as required in real-time. From its commissioning in November, 1989, to the end of the mine 's operation in June, 1990, it was enthusiastically embraced by the operators and attained operating levels superior to those achievable manually.IntroductionExpert system (ES) software springs from research into artificial intelligence and is currently making significant inroads into business and industry. ES proponents make many attractive claims; they are a means of capturing the knowledge of experts and they can be programmed by non-programmers. To date, most uses of this software in the process industry are in off-line applications, meaning that the applications are not tied directly to operating (on-line) environments. Moreover, in on-line environments, they are typically employed as advisors and only suggest changes. Human operators are required to close-the-loop to the process. Yet, an ES should be applicable to operating environments and, if the claims of the proponents are valid, should also be better than existing tools. As an intelligent controller an ES must use the knowledge of experienced operators, apply it directly to a process and do this without the intervention of human operators. On-line applications have been successfully employed in the closed loop control of SAG circuits (Herbst et al., 1989) and flotation circuits (Hales, 1989). Harris and Kosick (1988)detail an implementation for flotation control at the Polaris Mine."

"In the unconformity-type uranium deposit at Midwest Lake, mineralization is associated with extensive host rock alteration, which affects the metamorphic basement as well as the overlying Athabasca Group sandstones. Host rock alteration is manifested by (I) transformation of clay minerals [kaolinite into illite and chlorite (sudoile)]; (2) bleaching due to removal of hematite from the lateritic paleoweathering profile and the overlying red bed, Athabasca Group sandstones; (3) loss of coherence of the sandstone resulting from corrosion of quartz cement; and (4) in the immediate vicinity of high-grade ore, development of a clay envelope due to residual enrichment of clay minerals caused by massive dissolution of quartz. Clay mineral transformation and bleaching are the most prominent and the most widespread alteration effects, forming haloes that extend for several kilometres along the strike of the mineralized structure and also constitute distinct alteration pipes that rise f or several hundred metres above the unconformity to be truncated at the present top of the bedrock.Although the two haloes are largely congruent features, cross-culling relationship s indicate that clay mineral alteration represents an earlier phase in the history of the deposit than the large-scale bleaching that gave rise to the superimposed bleaching halo.Because clay mineral alteration and bleaching are intimately tied to the mineralization and extend well beyond the limits of the actual orebodies, host rock alteration may be used as an ore guide in exploration and drill-hole evaluation. In this application a third hydrothermal discharge centre was identified, as yet untested for are, which is located between the hydrothermal centres associated with the two known orebodies of the deposit.It is estimated that host rock alteration may enlarge a potential drill-target by a factor 10 - 20X. Information on the configuration of bleaching haloes can be obtained from systematic core logging, whereas diagnostic clay mineral alteration is readily identified by means of automated, quantitative XRD techniques."

The water cyclone washer has a number of advantages that makes it a desirable machine for the cleaning of fine-grained and friable materials such as 1,4 x 0" slack coals. In this paper results are presented of tests carried out on a shaly coal containing a high percentage of inter-grown materials from the Minto area, New Brunswick. The tests were con-ducted in the pilot plant of the Western Regional Laboratory in Edmonton. The test results show that the cleaning characteristics of this coal can be improved by lightly grinding the recirculating middlings fraction, which constitutes approximately 30 per cent (1.45-2.00 fraction) of the raw feed. • The cleaning of 1;4 x 0" fines by water cyclones compares favourably with other coal cleaning machines and has an added advantage of being extremely simple to operate, low in capital and operating cost, and high in capacity. Location and History The Sherritt Gordon mine is in northern Manitoba, one hundred miles north of The Pas and forty miles northeast of Flin Flon. The original discovery was made by a Cree indian, Philip Sherlett, in 1922. The claims lapsed in 1924 to be re-staked and optioned by various mining groups who carried out a certain amount of development work before relinquishing their options. In 1927 the present Company, Sherritt Gordon Mines, Limited, was formed to take over the property. Production commenced in 1931, but in the following year operations were suspended and it was not until 1937 that the prevailing price of copper pemitted resumption as an economic operation. The mine has operated continuously from that time to the present. Total production to the end of 1947 has been: Copper . . . . . . . . . 301,813 . .,345 pounds Zinc . . . . . . . . . . . 112,636 tons of concentrat (50% zinc) Gold . . . . . . . . . . 83,070 ounces Silver . . . . . . . . . 2,651,317 ounces General Geology The consolidated rocks in the vicinity of the mine, all of Precambrian age, are a series of gneisses and form a part of a great area of what are known as the Kisseynew gneisses. The Sherritt is the only known economic base-metal deposit to occur within the Kisseynew series. Extreme metamorphism has produced recrystallization that has imparted a decided igneous-like texture to many of the units. However, the gneisses are predominantly of sedimentary original although the most basic member, a hornblendegarnet gneiss, is considered to be an altered basic flow. Figure 1 illustrates the intricately folded structure and the succession of roe types. The footwall enclosing members are of sedimentary origin and represent quartzite and arkosic and greywacke derivatives. The contact footwall member is gneissic quartzite, a medium to coarse grained rock composed mainly of quartz with minor altered feldspar (orthoclase and plagioclase), muscovite, chloritized biotite, and magnetite. Most phases of this unit show varying degrees of granitization.

"A series of tests to optimize pressure oxidation- carbon-in-leach process (POX-CIL) of goldbearing flotation concentrate with the addition of sodium chloride and activated carbon were carried out. Flotation concentrate which was generated during primary ores concentration from a large Russian deposit was used for these tests. The tests were performed with different concentrations of sodium chloride. It was found that the required sodium chloride concentration for gold leaching was 5 g/L. The tests performed with different additions of activated carbon showed that the amount of activated carbon should be at least 6% of the concentrate mass. The rate of sulfides oxidation was 67.7–99.8 %. The highest gold recovery was 98.6 %.INTRODUCTIONThe majority of gold-bearing ores are recommended to classify as amenable to cyanidation and refractory. Processes at elevated pressures and temperatures have become increasingly important in base metals hydrometallurgy (Lodeischikov, 1999, 2007; Naboichenko, Shneerson, Kalashnikova, & Chugaev, 2009; Thomas, 2005).Current pressure autoclaves – cyanidation flow sheets are capital intensive due to numerous circuits and the use of environmentally-unfriendly sodium cyanide. The use of halide-based lixiviants during pressure oxidation of precious metals can be a promising technique for refractory sulfide goldbearing mineral raw material hydrometallurgical processing (Fleming, 2002, 2007, Kotlyar, Meretukov, & Strizhko, 2005).In this paper, we presented the results of the research on finding the optimum process parameters of pressure oxidation using an adsorbent for a refractory gold-bearing concentrate. A proposed flow sheet involves (Bogorodsky, Yelelianov, & Balikov, 2012):1. Gold-bearing sulfides oxidation followed by precious metals dissolution and the formation of gold and silver chloride complex;2. Reaction of the precious metals chloride complex with a carbon-based adsorbent;3. Precipitation of precious metals onto the adsorbent by EW and smelting of cathode precipitates into Dore bullions.This process allows POX of gold-bearing sulfides, precious metals dissolution and their precipitation on the adsorbent to be executed in one single vessel. This study found that the most suitable lixiviant was sodium chloride. Fleming (2002) suggested that in the presence of a halide-based reagent (e.g. chlorine- ion reaction), the dissolution of gold during POX is achieved according to reaction 1:"

Brunswick Mine has been involved in a comprehensive research program investigating site specific aspects of thiosalt management to eliminate its adverse environmental effects. Minimum annual reagent cost estimates for thiosalt treatment using hydrogen peroxide and sodium hypochlorite are $400K and $1.5 million respectively. Also, minimum costs for the use of bicarbonate to buffer the pH depression associated with thiosalt oxidation in the receiving environment is in the order of $400K annually. A design of experiment (DOE) research program identified that natural UV radiation, temperature, DO and water chemistry are key factors influencing the natural oxidation rate of thiosalts within Brunswick?s water management system. A DOE surface response model was used to describe the thiosalt oxidation kinetics, which were then used to develop a predictive oxidation model for thiosalt and pH control of the mill?s reclaim water system.

"This paper will examine the role of debt and equity in project financing and will illustrate the impact on the return to the project sponsor of each type. Conventional debt sources will be examined, as will product purchaser advances, foreign export-import bank loans and lease financing. The paper will review guarantees, charges against the project, dividend restrictions and other commitments. It will also discuss various features of sales contracts and the degree to which they can assist in securing financing. IntroductionThe cost of bringing new mining projects on stream is escalating significantly more rapidly than general rates of inflation. Reasons for this include the higher costs of safeguarding the environment and ensuring the health and safety of workers. The need to develop properties in more remote areas is also a significant factor. These higher costs have not been matched by increases in metal prices, making the task of financing these projects ever more difficult. At the same time, the imagination of borrowers and lenders seems boundless, and innovative schemes for financing projects are constantly being unveiled.It is probably safe to say that no two projects have ever been financed in precisely the same way and the number of financing options for any project is limited only by the imagination of the sponsors themselves. The objectives of the project sponsor represent the most important factor in determining the scope of possible financial arrangements. For example, the sponsor may wish to maximize over-all company leverage by isolating each of its projects in separate companies. In so doing, it hopes to facilitate more ventures than would otherwise be the case. These objectives point toward true project financing. Additional objectives may be to develop a number of its properties by joint venture and to reduce the amount of debt on the sponsor's balance sheet. Those sponsors whose objectives include minimizing over-all financing costs will wish to increase the number of financial options and, as a result, will not be so concerned with effecting true project financing. This approach may also provide ""greater certainty that tax benefits are utilized quickly."

"ForewordPart I of this paper, published in the March 1992 issue of the CIM Bulletin, surveyed the probable consequences of a limitation on the emissions of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere for the steel industry. What might be termed the conventional responses to this restriction open to the industry were also surveyed in that section. This section, Part II of the paper, explores a new option - the possibility for the joint production of iron and liquid fuels useful for transportation purposes. In this case, it is shown that it is important to minimize the production of carbon dioxide during the reduction stage to maximize the proportion of the reductant carbon embodied in the fuel. It is also advantageous to conserve hydrogen in the reduction step. In essence, the same carbon fulfills two purposes: it serves as a reductant and fuel for ironmaking and then as a constituent of a liquid fuel. If recovered plastics could be used in ironmaking, the same carbon could serve three useful purposes in turn. The conditions and limitations for the joint use of carbon in such 'cascading' processes are explored below. ABSTRACTIt is becoming increasingly probable that emissions of carbon dioxide from the fossil fuels will have to be reduced to deal with the threat of global warming. This issue is likely to be resolved one way or the other in the period 1995 to 2000 which does not leave much time to develop responsive options. In the intervening period, the policy of the Government of Canada is to stabilize emissions of greenhouse gases at their 1990 level by 2000, by encouraging greater efficiency in the use of energy. Should further reductions prove necessary, economic instruments would probably be employed but these would not be applied before a comprehensive international agreement is reached.There are three main themes in this paper: it is assumed that measures to control carbon dioxide emissions will in fact be necessary by the turn of the century; that there will be a rising need for liquid fuels to supply the world's steadily growing fleet of motor vehicles for many years to come, and that the future niche for Canada's industry in such a carbon-constrained world will be the operation of the energy-intensive industries with efficiency and environmental sensitivity.The steel industry, as a large user of both coal and energy in other forms, would be significantly affected by a need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. This paper first examines what might be called the conventional responses open to the industry in such a situation and then explores a new possibility for making better use of carbon by the co-production of iron and liquid fuels."

"IntroductionIn 1879, when the Dominion government initiated its controversial program of industrial promotion, iron smelting in Canada was limited to one company producing coke iron on the mainland of Nov a Scotia and three small charcoal blast furnaces in Quebec. There was no steel production. By the eve of the first great war, iron and steel were being produced in very large quantities, the companies active in 1879 had disappeared and new centres of integrated iron and rolled steel production at Hamilton, Sydney and Sault Ste. Marie had come to resemble the industry as we know it today.The most dramatic change was that at Sydney, Nova Scotia, where in the early 1900s, two steelmaking companies established works. The Sydney developments have been explained as the result of resource discovery and technical change. W.J. Donald, in his authoritative account of the Canadian iron and steel industry, observes:""The most rapid growth of the Canadian iron and steel industry has occured since 1897... The remarkable growth has been caused largely by the new conditions of the industry. The discovery and use of Newfoundland ores, together with the availability of Cape Breton coal, has made the Nova Scotia industry not only possible but profitable ... It is a safe conclusion that the Canadian industry would not have been an important one, had it not been for the discovery of the Michipicoten and especially the Wabana (Newfoundland) ores""Donald also argues that metallurgical progress had been necessary to render the ores valuable,""Newfoundland ores ... contain a considerable amount of phosphorus, and were made available for steel-making by recent inventions.""The purpose of this paper is to re-examine Donald's story. It will be argued that the origin of steel -making at Sydney is somewhat more complicated than Donald has indicated. The difficulty with Newfoundland ore extended beyond its phosphorus content and a resolution required more than the basic open hearth furnace identified by Donald. Moreover metallurgical change was only one of several developments necessary to induce industrial investment at Sydney. Surprisingly, however, the discovery of iron ore in the late nineteenth century does not appear to be part of the explanation."

"For recycling LD slag into the steel making process, the phosphorous containing calcium silcate phases have to be removed from iron oxide phases. One possible technical solution could be magnetic separation in a wide range of susceptibilities from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic. To check the feasibility of magnetic separation the distribution of the magnetic susceptibility in size classes as well as the liberation of the phosphorous containing phase were evaluated by a new method combining two dimensional physical property analysis with QEMSCAN analysis. The particle size classes of energy controlled comminution products were subdivided into fractions of defined magnetic susceptibility using a hand magnet of well known field properties (pick up method). On the one hand the susceptibility classes were wet assayed on the other hand analyzed by QEMSCAN followed by data evaluation using iDiscover 5.3.1(FEI), which was adapted to the data structure of two physical properties (size and magnetic mass susceptibility). The results allow the comparison of mass based (3D) cumulative distribution of grades from the wet assays with the area based (2D) distribution from QEMSCAN analysis, in order to control a systematic (size dependent) stereological error for this special type of material. As the physical separation property forms a crucial parameter the results from the liberation analysis by QEMSCAN can be interpreted more profound with respect to an expectable separation result. Once the various mineral compositions of the particles are assigned to the physical properties the Henry Reinhardt chart serves to predict the best possible separation result and thus the feasibility of a separation technique.INTRODUCTIONThe two Austrian steel plants operated by voestalpine AG produce about 650,000 t (voestalpine 2014) of LD slag in the course of steel production from pig iron according to the basic oxygen process blowing oxygen in the converter by an oxygen lance. The process is also known as the Linz Donawitz (LD) steelmaking process. By the addition of lime (CaO), carbon, phosphorus, silica, manganese and sulfur, which are present in the molten pig iron, shall be oxidized and bound in the slag either as oxide or silicate phases, or leave the slag in the gaseous phase (CO). The average chemical composition of the investigated LD slag is given in table 1."

The Gwillim Mine, located 8 km northwest of Chibougamau, is underlain by two mafic volcanic cycles separated by a dominantly felsic cycle. These rocks are part of the Gilman Formation of the Roy Group. The mafic rocks are cut by weak shear zones containing the "North" and "Main" veins, both east-west striking gold-bearing structures dipping 75° to the north. The felsic cycle, which is also gold-bearing, contains textures suggesting a syngenetic origin. The Gwillim Mine presents an excellent opportunity for the study of what may be two coexisting gold deposits, a volcanogenic and a veine type.

The slags generated in the copper conversion process are mainly composed of Cu2O-Fe2O3-SiO2 with the compounds CaO and Al2O3 in concentrations up to 10 wt%. The present work contributes to the knowledge of the conversion process, generating experimental data for the diagrams of phases Cu2O-Fe2O3- SiO2-Al2O3 and Cu2O-Fe2O3-SiO2-CaO. The experiments were carried out in a tubular furnace at temperatures of 1150°C and 1200°C under a condition of saturation with tridymite. Once the equilibrium was reached, the samples were fast quenched in water. The phases in the samples were observed in a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and the elemental composition of the phases analyzed by means of Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) detectors. The addition of Al2O3 and CaO into the Cu2O-Fe2O3- SiO2 system resulted in an appreciable displacement of the liquidus lines, corresponding to an expansion of the liquid in the tridymite primary phase field. INTRODUCTION The conversion process of copper consists of oxidizing Fe and S present in mattes with 60 to 65wt% Cu (up to 16wt% Fe). This process is separated into two stages: 1- Slag blowing: Fe is oxidized, the addition of a flux such as SiO2 (silica) forms a second liquid phase called slag, this phase is removed from the furnace; 2-Copper blowing: in this stage, the matte with low concentration of Fe (<1% w/w) is again oxidized to remove S as SO2 in the exhaust gases. The product of these two processes is the formation of Copper Blister (> 98wt% Cu) (Schlesinger et al., 2011). Unlike the aforementioned conventional processes, in most Chilean smelters, conversion Peirce- Smith Furnaces are loaded with high copper matte (70–75wt% Cu) (Henao & Moyano, 2016). Due to the low concentration of iron in these matte (up to 5wt%), it is considered that separating the conversion process in two stages is neither operational nor environmentally convenient. Therefore, the process is carried out in a single stage (Pradena et al., 2006), generating a slag phase with a high percentage of Cu2O (wt%Cu>40).
