When rivers are contaminated from industrial operations, as often occurs near repositories of spent mine tailings, decision-support tools can be critically important in evaluating the effectiveness of various engineering impact-management measures. Even where data describing river flows and quality are sparse, simple mixing-zone models can be constructed that can contribute greatly to understanding how impact-management measures can differentially affect existing river-chemistry regimes. There can be circumstances where accumulated surface waters near contaminated land can bear contaminant loadings that could be acceptable to river regimes if there were methods available to evaluate optional discharge rates and to predict post-mixing consequences on river chemistry. Nomographs can be constructed to evaluate discharge regimes that appear capable of releasing contaminated accumulated pond water without compromising water quality in a nearby river. River-mixing zone models also contribute to predicting rates of acceptable discharge and release to the receiving environment.

This presentation describes a lightweight automobile body structure concept developed at DaimlerChrysler to support a high fuel-efficiency vehicle project. This body structure consisted primarily of large thin-wall magnesium castings and resulted in a more than 40% weight reduction with a minimal cost increase over a conventional steel structure while achieving significantly improved structural performance as evaluated through CAE simulations. One concept vehicle was built for the purpose of demonstrating concept feasibility. Several slides showing the prototype build process are presented. The presentation also describes several large thin-wall die casting body applications that are in current production or have been used in recent production automotive applications and identifies areas where further development could improve the chances of a magnesium intensive body structure becoming a production reality at a later time.

Le Québec dispose de ressources en silice abondantes et diversifiées, pouvant convenir dans l'ensemble à la plupart des usages industriels. Dans les terrains Paléozoïques des BassesTerres du Saint-Laurent et des Appalaches, les ressources identifiées comprennent les grès quartzitiques purs du Croupe de Potsdam (Cambrien), exploités notamment à Saint Canut au nord de Montréal comme source de sable de silice pour l'industrie du verre; les arénites quartzitiques des Formations de Val-Brillant (Silurien moyen) et de Kamouraska (Ordovocien inférieur) exploitées dans l'est du Québec comme source de fondant métallurgique; les grès friables de la Formation de Guigues (Ordovicien) au Témiscamingue, à partir desquels on produit des sables de silice utilisés notamment en fonderie et en filtration. Dans la province structurale du Grenville, au nord du fleuve Saint-Laurent, les métaquartzites purs du Supergroupe de Grenville représentent une source importante de silice pour la production de silicium, de ferro-silicium et de carbure de silicium. Des veines et amas de quartz ont aussi été exploités un peu partout au Québec comme source de fondant métallurgique ou de silice ultra-pure pour la production de silicium métal. Quelques dépôts de sables naturels, généralement d'origine marine ou deltaïque sont finalement exploités dans la région de Montréal comme source de sable pour des usages n'exigeant pas un produit de haute pureté.

Despite the advances in processing technologies, construction techniques, inspection methods, and materials, the number of process safety incidents are still increasing, and often the same types of incidents are being repeated. While regulators are enforcing stringent requirements in regards to safety management systems, process safety incident statistics reflect a failure in effective implementation. Upon closer look at the implementation of safety management systems, it becomes evident that the systems were not built on robust risk recognition. The risk-based implementation approach enables facilities to develop systems focused on managing specific risks and quickly gain momentum and confidence to take next steps towards implementing comprehensive systems. This paper will cover the importance of risk recognition and governance, risk based implementation and the role of Process Hazard Analysis in managing operational risks through the lifecycle.

Rare earth elements play an increasingly important role in renewable energy devices and high-end electronics. In this project, the composition and morphology of REEs-bearing minerals are characterized with a field-emission scanning electron microscope at high spatial resolution and high counts rate using an X-ray silicon drift detector system. High spatial resolution imaging and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis were applied at low and high magnification to obtain the composition of each phase in the minerals. From the standardless quantitative analysis results, the amount of REEs in each phase was measured and the relationships between those phases were identified.

The introduction of new technology in mine operations has provided real opportunities for increased efficiencies and production gains which translate into enhanced profits. Computing and network technology usage has become integrated into surface mining operations and on average these investments in technology have proven beneficial for efficiency and productivity improvements. Embracing new technologies however, does not guarantee positive results. The expectations or improvements derived through the technology must be confirmed and clarified well before implementation. Tire Pressure and Temperature Monitoring Systems are an excellent example of an existing technology that can provide full time automated performance measurements of tires operating under harsh conditions and environments. Prompt warnings or alarms signaling when a tire has exceeded operating capacities will provide savings through lowered maintenance costs and increased productivity. To truly quantify the projected savings in tire life, fuel consumption, and increased levels of production, all costs associated with the technology, both direct and indirect must be considered. Apart from the initial cost of the system implementation, ongoing maintenance and support costs must be considered as well as the costs of system integration into existing mine operations

Kidd Mine, an Xstrata Copper operation in Timmins, Ontario, operates a 400 t/h pastefill plant that provides paste backfill to stopes at the depth of 9000 ft. This paper will cover the operating practices of the pastefill plant both on surface and underground, highlighting tailings excavation, paste mix design and the pipe maintenance program. This paper provides an introduction to wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) and its successful application to the beneficiation of rare earth element (REE) enriched eudialyte. The analysis includes an in-depth reporting of the deportment of key elements as well as a statistical interpretation of the relative importance of operational parameters including magnetic field intensity, flow velocity, and matrix loading density. Conclusions are drawn on the relative success of the technology, potential areas for process improvement, and the research direction that continues to be investigated. Three original equipment manufacturer (OEM) technologies were subjected to a series of screening and characterization tests to identify the optimal operating parameter set to magnetically beneficiate eudialyte from Norra Kärr, Sweden. Upon the completion of the characterization test it was apparent that the Metso HGMS technology was superior with respect to REE recovery and gangue rejection for the Norra Kärr composite. The Metso HGMS was then subjected to a series of verification tests to confirm the repeatability and reproducibility of the system.

Mining companies in communities without other large employers often encounter dependent or defiant stakeholder attitudes, sometimes simultaneously. Less often they also see some slip into social dissipation or advance towards sustainable development. This paper presents a four-quadrant framework that shows how patterns of social capital foster these four reactions. The two dimensions defining the quadrants are the social capital levels (a) between the company and each stakeholder, and (b) among stakeholders themselves. Examples from the Antamina mine in Peru illustrate a social capital measurement system that can predict these reactions and help the community chart its path towards sustainable development.

Examples of projects include renewable energy considerations that incorporate solar, wind, and/or biomass options, and contain components designed to educate business, government entities and the local community on renewable energy options and potential opportunities Multiple property re-use options are being researched and evaluated, based on site-specific conditions and characteristics, including infrastructure, local community needs and regional economic conditions. Re-use options being explored include innovative uses and needs, such as specialty housing, unique business and industrial needs, and an extensive variety of recreational and small business opportunities that best fit the specific needs of the local community and regional economic structure.

"This paper studies the characterization and dissolution of a Nigerian pyrolusite ore, reporting the results of ore physicochemical analyses and detailed ore characterization before and after leaching at optimal conditions. Ore dissolution rate increased proportional to acid concentration and temperature, but decreased with ore particle size. In a 4 M H2SO4 solution at 80°C with a particle size of –90+75 µm and moderate agitation, ore dissolution rate reached 78.7%. Unleached residue produced under optimal leaching conditions consisted of silica with admixtures of cristobalite and stishovite. The calculated activation energy supported the proposed diffusion control mechanism for the process.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article étudie la caractérisation et la dissolution d’un minerai de pyrolusite du Nigeria, il donne les résultats des analyses physicochimiques du minerai et de la caractérisation détaillée du minerai avant et après la lixiviation sous des conditions optimales. Le taux de dissolution du minerai augmentait proportionnellement à la concentration de l’acide mais décroissait avec la taille des particules. Dans une solution 4 M H2SO4 à 80 °C, avec une granulométrie de –90+75 µm et une agitation modérée, le taux de dissolution du minerai a atteint 78,7 %. Les résidus produits sous des conditions optimales de lixiviation étaient constitués de silice avec un mélange de cristobalite et de stishovite. This paper describes how to make advanced control choices when difficult processes need improvement. The decision-making process involves choosing between a rules-based approach and a model-based approach as well as weighing benefits and drawbacks, complexity and simplicity, investment and results. This paper will present briefly each solution: basic control, advanced regulatory control, model predictive control and expert systems such as fuzzy logic controllers and neural networks. Three examples are presented: ARC (Advanced Regulatory Control) on pH in a comminution circuit, MPC (Model Predictive Control) for combustible management and FLC (Fuzzy Logic Control) on a Semi Autogenous Mill. The article then proposes a decision tree for selecting the most appropriate approach. A table will compare usage, development, commissioning, maintenance and lifecycle costs for each approach. Finally, conclusions and suggestions will summarize the methodology.

The mill effluent treatment circuit (Bulk Neutralization (BN)) in the Cameco Key Lake Operation was modified in 2008 to enhance the removal efficiency of selenium (Se) and molybdenum (Mo) from the mill process water. This modification was completed in part due to increased knowledge of the effects these elements have on biota. In addition, legacy effects from the historical operation of the Key Lake mill in regards to Se and Mo were shown to have an effect on the regional biota in the downstream receptors. This was a challenging initiative as there was no off the shelf technology available and the removal process had to be incorporated into an existing (brownfield) process. These modifications have resulted in significant reduction in the concentration of these elements in the Key Lake mill effluent. The removal efficiency for Se and Mo in the modified circuit has increased to 95% and 75%. As a result, concentrations of Se and Mo are now consistently less than 0.4 mg/l and 0.02 mg/l. In addition, the Se and Mo precipitates formed were extensively studied to ensure long-term geochemical stability in the Key Lake in-pit tailings facility. This presentation will provide additional detail on the hydrometallurgical removal mechanisms and process modifications required in the Key Lake BN circuit to remove these elements to trace levels.

Inconel 600 pipes welded to Carbon-Steel are used in CANDU nuclear reactors. Fracture of these welded tubes would have important consequences in term of safety, and therefore their mechanical properties need to be better understood. In this study, the weld region was analyzed at various length-scales using optical microscopy, micro hardness testing, small and large scale tensile testing and digital image correlation (DIC). Large grains were observed in the weld region and smaller grains in the Inconel and carbon steel base metals. Micro-hardness profiles showed variations across the weld and through thickness and were justified in terms of residual stresses in the sample. Large tensile samples were extracted from the welded pipe and were used to identify the material in which fracture initiates. In addition, the local strains in each material were obtained using digital image correlation. Local stress-strain curves were built from the DIC data and compared to stress-strain curves obtained from miniature tensile samples extracted from the carbon steel, Inconel and weld regions. The results demonstrate the advantage of using DIC for extracting local material properties in dissimilar weld systems. Variations in the materials stress-strain curves thought thickness are also presented and emphasize the need for obtaining a complete map of the mechanical properties in the weld region for predictive models to be accurate. Preliminary fracture studies will also be presented.

"Brunswick Mining and Smelting commenced production at the No. 12orebody, a lead/zinc/copper/silver deposit, situated some seventeen miles southwest of Bathurst, New Brunswick, in 1964 at 4100 tonnes per day. Today it operates at 10500 tonnes per day.Brunswick has utilized underground incentives since commencement of operations. Early incentive systems were “off the wall"" based on those in effect at other properties then manipulated to fit, often hack calculated from actual performances to tm1ve at the desired result. If subsequent payouts were considered too high the rates were simply reduced, often retroactively. A large amount of this was' subjective and depended to a large extent on whoever was handling the bonus, in conjunction with senior mine department staff.In 1971, it was' decided that a more scientific approach was needed, particularly with the introduction of the new cut-and-fill mining. After some research, a system based on Work Study was selected. Another major mining company employing such a system loaned one of their experienced employees to train some Brunswick personnel in the art of Work Study and conversion of data to incentive rates, and in 1972, the first such developed incentive rate was-introduced.Along the way, borrowing from others where necessary, a set of Brunswick principles and parameters were developed. While refined to some extent, these remain basically the same today.Improvements in methods and equipment have resulted in improved performance and reduced costs. The use of underground incentives has played an important role in this. A/though individual bonus earnings have steadily increased, bonus cost per tonne has remained nearly constant - in real dollars, it has regularly decreased. These are two of the main parameters of a successful system."
