"Coal mining, whether surface or underground, has hazards that make it unique in the field of industrial safety and health. The often soft, faulted and folded sedimentary strata make wall or roof movement a risk to the safe and economic removal of the coal, while the extraction and handling of coal may create an explosion hazard even in surface operations, In Canada, these problems are compounded by the situation of the coal fields which range from deep undersea deposits in Nova Scotia to steeply pitching thick coal seams high in the Rocky Mountains. Climate too can create its own problems, particularly the effect of metals of minus 40°C temperatures, as crumpled dragline booms at prairie strip mines witness. Because of the difficult and sometimes hazardous conditions, Canada's underground colliery managers, in common with those of other Commonwealth coal-producing countries, must have a government ""certificate of competency"" before being appointed as mine managers. Certification of assistant managers (""under-managers"") and foremen (""fire-bosses"") is also a legal requirement for all of Canada's underground collieries, while the province of Alberta requires certification of surface management personnel. Electricians and mechanics who install and maintain the specially designed equipment underground and in hazardous areas of surface mines and processing plants, and mine surveyors who ensure accuracy of the location of underground workings, must also hold government certificates of competency. The requisites for all certification include a minimum work experience and knowledge of coal mining technology and mine safety and health legislation. Despite recognition of the hazards and increasing knowledge of methods of preventing explosions of flammable gas and coal dust in Canada's underground mines, there have been several disastrous explosions such as those at Springhill Colliery in Nova Scotia in 1891 with the loss of 125 lives, at Hillcrest Colliery in Alberta in 1914 with 189 dead, and more recently · explosions and fires in No. 20 and No. 26 Collieries in Cape Breton. Preventing explosions has required developing optimal ventilation techniques, reducing ignition potential, suppressing ignition at source, draining flammable gas before it can enter the air courses, and preventing, or sealing off, autogenous heatings with their associated carbon monoxide or explosion dangers."

The Sustut Copper deposit, 230 miles northwest of Prince George, B.C., was discovered in August of 1971. Subsequent exploration has included 56,417 feet of surface diamond drilling in 139 holes. The deposit occurs in gently dipping volcanic rocks of the Upper Triassic Takla Group, which outcrops as rugged mountains. The general Mesozoic sequence comprises some 20,000 feet of green and red basaltic to andesitic rocks. The Lower Formation is characterized by subaqueous basalt, andesite and augite porphyry flows with interbedded breccias. They were rapidly deposited in tectonic depressions of limited extent and steep gradients. Fades changes are abundant. The Middle Formation consists of volcaniclastic rocks made up of fragments from the underlying formation. Two cycles are discernible, both with basal turbiditic, tuf-faceous sandstone and shale units overlain by massive, volcanic conglomerates exhibiting graded and cross bedding. A broader, shallower-water basin is indicated. The top of the uppermost unit was subaerially deposited. The Upper Formation is a variable sequence of volcanic sedimentary rocks. Detritus was supplied from a wide source area and included multiple reworked fragments of the lower formations and material from other rock groups known in the region. Zeolite fades metamorphism is recognized throughout the entire sequence. Epidote is particularly abundant in the Middle Formation, demonstrating the results of metasomatism. The mineralized zone is approximately concordant with the strata over 100-200 feet of the Middle Formation succession. It lies just below the zone of transition from subaqueous to subaerial deposition in the top unit. Hematite, chalcocite, pyrite, bornite, chalcopyrite and native copper are disseminated throughout all sizes of lithic fragments and matrix. Concentration into the specific zone is believed, to be due to upward leaching of copper during low-grade metamorphic and metasomitic reaction. Precipitation occurred in the zone of hydration characterized by prehnite-pumpellyite below the oxidized subaerial rocks.

"This paper presents the design and application of blasthole mining to an area at Strathcona Mine previously employing post pillar cut-and-fill. Extensive mining in the area had led to gradually deteriorating ground conditions and post pillar stoping was no longer considered acceptable. Alternative methods had to be investigated.Conventional methods for mining in poor ground were rejected because of the high cost. Blasthole mining was selected because iI offered good productivity and safety with acceptable costs. The design of this approach involved field investigations and the use of numerical modelling to simulate the different blasthole options and their impact on ground stability. The blasthole design incorporated reinforcement with cablebolts, use of a radio-controlled remote LHD unit, large-diameter holes, blast design and wall control. Potentially unstable areas were outlined during mining with ground monitoring instruments and the results used to modify mining plans during the production phase.IntroductionIn underground metal mines there is a need to improve safety and productivity and lower mining costs in order to maintain reasonable rates of return on investment. This requires the application of good engineering design to both mine planning and ground control in order to optimize production and costs and to forecast potential problems during mining. The task becomes more important when extensive mining leads to gradually deteriorating ground conditions, making existing mining methods and techniques no longer acceptable from a safety point of view. Alternative mining methods must, however, be sufficiently productive to ensure profitability. This paper presents an example of the engineering design and operating approach used by Falconbridge in dealing with such a situation at Strathcona Mine."

Introduction The geology of the Sudbury nickel field has been studied extensively, but there are few reports dealing with the structure of the interior of the basin. It was not until the Treadwell-Yukon zinc-lead deposits were discovered that attention was strongly directed toward the large-scale faulting that has split the basin parallel to its long axis. This faulting has been responsible for the , ore deposits in the basin and it may be regarded in many ways as the most important geological event, next to the intrusion and differentiation of the nickel eruptive sheet, that has occurred in the Sudbury region. The early reports on the nickel region by Bell, and Barlow, were chiefly concerned with the nickel-copper ores and with the formations of the region. Coleman was the first geologist to map the nickel eruptive as a continuous sheet around the belt and to emphasize its basin character. On the map accompanying his later report, he shows an important offset in the nickel eruptive at its southwest end, where the large fault cuts this portion of the basin, but the fault was not traced into its interior, as little detailed work was clone in the basin at that time. No ore-bodies had been developed outside of the nickel-copper deposits associated with the norite when the map was prepared, and attention was mostly concentrated on the nickel eruptive. Coleman did, however, map and name the various formations found within the basin and, in general, his delineation of these has remained the standard for prospectors and other workers in the field until the present day.

Brannerite is commonly referred to as a refractory uranium mineral as it is usually highly resistant to acid leaching. There is however widely varying literature data on brannerite leaching, with some studies reporting that brannerite leaching can be achieved under relatively mild conditions. The differences observed for brannerite leaching are most likely due to the high degree of variation in the composition and structure observed in natural brannerites. These aspects of brannerite chemistry however are not very well understood due to a lack of fundamental research. The aims of this study were to investigate and develop methods for synthesising brannerites of varying composition and to investigate the effects of composition on brannerite leaching in acidic conditions.

"This paper examines the change in surface properties of the Polyurea used on spirals at different operational times: unused spiral, 28 months in operation and 58 months in operation. This is being done to investigate the alleged statement that spirals have a decrease in spiral separation efficiency after a certain period of operational time. Observing the surface characteristics under 1.5x and 36x magnification it can be concluded that the surface roughness decreases with increased operational time. This may be explained by a decrease in air inclusions and streak lines as the spiral surface wears. Decreased surface roughness should in theory have a beneficial effect on spiral separation performance. This leads to the conclusion that if a decrease in spiral separation performance is observed after a certain period of operation, it can’t be attributed to the change in surface properties. Uneven wear of the spiral surface, material creep or application of force to the spiral will change the profile of the spiral and could cause an adverse effect on spiral separation performance. The metallurgical test work showed that the best results are obtained at 30 - 35% solids by mass in the spiral feed. The iron recovery was significantly higher in the new spiral in comparison to the 2012 and 2010 spirals. The mass yield to concentrate in the new spiral was approximately three times more than for the older spirals. In conclusion, the yield combined with the grade, which equals the recovery was the best for the new spiral.IntroductionAn investigation was launched to research the common belief that spirals experience a decrease in efficiency, and therefore recovery, after a certain period of operation (a period of seven years has been used in the industry). Introduction Gowganda forms part of the general Cobalt area. Its rocks and ores are very similar to those of the other parts of the area. While its total production of silver is only 4 per cent of that of the famous Cobalt silver camp, its 1928 shipments contained 42 1/2 per cent as much silver as those of Cobalt for that year. During twenty years of production, 15,000,000 ounces of silver have been shipped from Gowganda. Of this, over 8,000,000 ounces have been shipped in the past five years. The area has thus made for several years a substantial contribution to the wealth of Ontario. Its future depends to a great extent on the priee of silver, which is now, unfortunately, at a record low price. This paper is a discussion of how the Gowganda ore-shoots occur, together with some notes on the milling of the ores at the Castle-Trethewey Mines. The first part is written in the hope of stimulating further study of the silver occurrences, which may lead to further discoveries. The second part, besides being a matter of record, may be of some use to operators of small mills. The drawings in the several Figures illustrating the text are by W. D. Stroud, mine superintendent of the Castle-Trethewey Mines, the benefit of whose opinions I have had in compiling these notes.

Palabora Mining Company (PMC) processes a multi-component ore body using a circuit consisting of two AG mills in parallel, closed with vibrating double deck screens and hydrocyclones. The bottom screen undersize feeds the hydrocyclones, but the screen oversize products can be treated in a variety of ways. The top deck screen pebbles can be crushed and then combined with the bottom deck oversize and recycled to the AG mill. Alternatively both the top and bottom deck screen oversize can by-pass the recycle crusher and be recycled directly to the mill. A full tap-off is a configuration when both the top and bottom deck screen oversize streams are stockpiled. The other configuration is when the bottom deck screen oversize is recycled to the mill while the top deck screen oversize is stockpiled - termed partial tap-off. This article reports the findings from the surveys performed to evaluate the performance of the PMC auto mill circuit when operated under the four different configurations discussed. Ore characterisation tests were performed to assess the deportment of the key ore components for the different configuration.

"AbstractIn this paper a new type of durable 'spiral-rolled' drill set is introduced and its performance discussed. Efficient and economical mine drilling-depends to a great extent on durability of the drill-set employed. Premature failure of this element damages the drill bit and is costly when tungsten carbide bits are used.Time of drilling of 'spiral-rolled' drill sets introduced at present in Canada is considerably larger than for the presently used drill steel, but laboratory simulated service tests and practical field tests show that the 'drilling life' of the spiral-rolled drill set is several times that of ordinary drill steel.Some features of differential plastic deformation and differential surface rolling, so called 'spiral-rolling', are given.Relations between the drilling machine drill set and characteristics of the ore are discussed. The effect of shims on conical drill rod attachments, the mechanism of failure of drill steel, .and stresses during mine drilling, are analysed.IntroductionIN MINE DRILLING operations, the main interests are: the drilling machines as a source of working energy, the drill set as the tool transferring the working energy to the cutting edges of the bit, and, finally, the drilling characteristic of the .ore or waste rock.This paper includes a review of the possibilities of metallurgical and mechanical improvements in the drill set, with particular attention to drill steel and the attachments.For economical and efficient mine drilling operations, a durable drill rod, attachment, and drill bit are essential. "The Expert System implemented at the East-Malartic mill controls a copper flotation circuit while taking into account the profitability of the operation. Treating a copper gold ore, the flow sheet integrates a flotation step followed by cyanide leach circuit. The Expert System calculates the actual net smelter revenue of the flotation circuit, accounts for the operating cost of the cyanidation circuit and defines optimal metallurgical operating targets to optimize the overall economics. To be realistic, probability factors and circuit diagnostic analysis are integrated in the operating target selection. The Expert System has proved to be successful, robust and flexible. It resulted in a copper concentrate grade increase of 1% while maintaining recovery. The use of the expert system also gives plant personnel good training procedures and promotes interaction with mill operator.INTRODUCTIONThe East-Malartic mill is located close to the town of Malartic in North Western Quebec, Canada. The mill was first commissioned in 1938. The flowsheet at that time was a straight cyanidation circuit. The original mill operated in that mode up to the discovery of the Bousquet 2 orebody in 1989 which consisted of a massive copper sulphide ore averaging 0.7% copper and 7 g/mt of gold. Bousquet 2 ore processing required a mill retrofit. Grinding capacity, gravity and copper flotation circuits were inserted prior to the cyanidation circuit in order to achieve 3,200 mtpd capacity at expected recoveries.In 1993, control of the flotation circuit was deemed critical in order to maintain the flotation performance and to reduce cyanide consumption since the copper sulphide contained in the Bousquet 2 ore is a high cyanide consumer (50% bornite). (McMullen, 1999) As a result, the implementation of advanced control strategies in order to increase the metallurgical profitability of the plant and to reduce the operating variability between operators was the most rational alternative. In 1994, Corem was chosen to perform the plant audit and to write the first set of rules. The on-line control strategy was started up in 1995. In 1996 and 1997 the Expert System was shutdown because of an extreme change in the ore coming from the milling of Bousquet #1 ore and the departure of the projects engineer. In 1998, the system was restarted and the results were impressive. Furthermore in May of 2001 a patent was issued for the control strategy. (Breau, 2001)"

Aluminum extrusions are widely used for automotive crash management systems due to their superior specific energy absorption capabilities, as compared to steel. The Al-Mg-Si alloy series can be readily extruded into complex multi-hollow profiles, as required in crash systems, and can be used to target a range of desired strength levels. This paper focuses on the development of an axial crush test protocol and evaluation of the crush performance of common 6XXX series alloys for a variety of tempers. The observed crush behaviour is then compared to tensile test results.

The gold district of northwestern Quebec, though it has attracted such widespread attention during the past year, is still in the prospect stage throughout, and one must preface any remarks about it with the plain statement that its capacity to produce gold commercially is still subject to proof. However, this proof may be forthcoming any day, and from widely separated localities. Consequently it is of interest to note some of the features of the region and of the prospects now being developed. First I shall note the relation of this mining development to the province of Quebec and to the Dominion; then will follow a brief resume of the known geological facts; and finally I shall describe briefly some of the more advanced prospects developed during the past twelve-month. Those that have followed closely the fortunes of the new gold-field will find little that is new in what follows, but it may serve a useful purpose for others by bringing together scattered items of information and presenting them as a whole. GOLD MINING AND AGRICULTURE First let us consider the gold belt in its relation to the province of Quebec. Apart from the world-renowned asbestos camp south of the St. Lawrence, it is the only mineral development of major importance the province has experienced. It is the first important development in the province's vast area of Precambrian rocks, most of which remains as yet totally unexplored and unprospected. The relative importance of this first mining camp in northern Quebec cannot as yet be gauged, but it is bound to stimulate an active interest in the other mineral-bearing areas now known to exist, and in the vast unexplored spaces.

For almost 350 years, industrial rocks and minerals have been produced, used locally and exported from New Brunswick to markets throughout the world. Up until the early 1960s, commodities like grindstone, building stone, gypsum, and limestone served as the foundation of the province's non-fuel mining industry. The importance and high level of activity surrounding industrial rock and mineral development in New Brunswick is reflected in a multimillion dollar industry generating substantial revenue and providing a valuable service to its people. New Brunswick's varied geology is reflected not only by the diversity of industrial rock and mineral resources presently under development but also in several promising exploration and potential development opportunities. The province also hosts several industrial rock and mineral processing facilities, each with established technologies ensuring high-quality products and each with sufficient flexibility to supply customized products for various specialized niche markets. With the imminent availability of natural gas to parts of the province, the prospects for additional value-added processing and re-examination of known, yet presently undeveloped deposits, appear excellent. These variables coupled with the province's advantageous geographical location, highlighting tidewater access to global markets and within one day's trucking distance to a regional market of several million people, guarantee prompt delivery of high-quality products at competitive prices.

THE prevention of silicosis by metallic aluminium has been reported by Denny, Robson, and Irwin in two papers. The first (1) was published in 1937; the second (2), in 1939. The results definitely established that silicosis was prevented in animals by the inhalation of small quantities of aluminium. The present communication records subsequent progress in this field of research. HARMLESSNESS OF ALUMINIUM Animal experiments having served their purpose, it became necessary to consider means to test the discovery on humans. A question for immediate consideration was: Is aluminium harmful to man when inhaled as a fine powder? While the animal experiments were reassuring, since they conclusively showed the powder to be innocuous when breathed by animals, it was, nevertheless, desirable to have additional reassurance with regard to its effect upon human beings. Through the courtesy of the Aluminum Company of America and especially the valued interest in this problem displayed by that Company's Director of Research, Dr. Francis C. Frary, a study was made of the records pertaining to the health of a group of 125 employees who had for many years been engaged in the manufacture of finely powdered, metallic aluminium for the paint and ink industries. The conditions were such that these employees had inhaled varying and oft-times very dense concentrations of this powder daily over periods ranging from 6 to 23 years, the average for the group being 12 years. X-ray pictures of their chests showed no abnormalities attributable to aluminium. Their general health seemed better than that of the 3,000 workers in other sections of the plant. In fact, the early films of three employees in this group of 125 showed shadows suggestive of minimal tuberculosis, which shadows were not discernible in films taken after considerable periods of exposure to aluminium powder. The harmlessness of aluminium was, by this study, reasonably well established at the outset, a finding subsequently verified by Ontario research on humans.

"Some results are presented of an integrated geological and geophysical study of Precambrian magnetite-quartz iron-formation in the Kapiko Iron Range north of Nakina, Ontario. Detailed geological and topographical mapping was carried out in conjunction with detailed geophysical investigations such as vertical magnetic field, vertical magnetic gradient, hammer seismic, horizontal-loop electromagnetic and magnetic susceptibility surveys. In addition, oriented drill cores were obtained for magnetic polarization studies.Vertical-force magnetic anomalies within individual rock units showed a strong positive correlation with topographic relief. Moreover, magnetic intensity was found not to be quantitatively proportional to the magnetite content in the rocks, due to the presence of high remanent magnetization of the magnetite. Also, the remanent polarization direction was sub parallel to the plunge of the fold structure and mineral lineation in associated rocks.Vertical magnetic gradient measurements were found to be more accurate in locating buried contacts between magnetite-quartz iron-formation and country rock than the vertical magnetic force data.An in-situ magnetic susceptibility meter was used to measure the magnetite content of iron-formation, and the measurements were subsequently compared with vertical-force magnetic results.The results of the EM survey were inconclusive; some magnetite-rich zones produced anomalies in the out-of-phase component. whereas others did not. The reasons for such inconsistencies are not yet apparent.Longitudinal seismic wave velocities measured parallel to the bedding in magnetite-quartz iron-formation ranged from 10,600 ft/sec. to 14,500 ft/sec. The seismic velocity appears to increase with an increase in deformation of the rocks."

RÉSUMÉ L’estimation la plus précise possible des coûts de minage est d’extrême importance pour les études de préfaisabilité afin de diminuer les risques financiers des projets miniers. Les méthodologies existantes d’évaluation des coûts de minage ne permettent pas de les évaluer avec des marges d’erreur acceptables tout au long de l’évolution des projets miniers. Elles visent à évaluer les coûts unitaires de minage des études préliminaires de faisabilité, pour les principales méthodes d’exploitation, en prenant pour l’hypothèse que ces coûts dépendent principalement du taux d’extraction journalière. Si cette hypothèse peut être justifiée pour l’évaluation du coût d’opération, elle est fort discutable pour l’évaluation des coûts de minage. Pour démontrer que cette hypothèse est inadéquate nous avons analysé la méthode d’exploitation la plus populaire sur le continent nord-américain c’est à dire celle par chambres vides avec retrait horizontal (Hr – Horizontal retreat), ou « Longhole » et celle avec retrait vertical (VCr - Vertical Crater retreat). Il ressort de cette analyse que les coûts unitaires de minage dépendent principalement des conditions géotechniques du massif rocheux et de la largeur du gisement et non pas du taux d’extraction journalière du minerai.

"The visual appearance and mechanical properties of aluminium alloy extrusions are strongly dependent on the microstructure and texture of the extruded profiles, where the desired microstructure and texture may depend on the specific applications. In the present work, the evolution of deformation, as well as recrystallization textures during extrusion of AA6xxx aluminium alloys, have been experimentally and numerically investigated. Extrusion trials were performed in a laboratory extrusion set-up, which enabled immediate water-quenching of the profiles at the exit of the die, and thus the possibility to capture the deformation texture prior to post-extrusion recrystallization. The textures and their through-thickness variations were experimentally measured by the electron back-scatter diffraction technique (EBSD, and the deformation textures numerically modelled by coupling FEM flow simulations and crystal plasticity (CP) simulations. Different CP models as well as different choices of model parameters were employed and evaluated for texture predictions. With an appropriate choice of crystal plasticity model and model parameters, the deformation texture can mainly be predicted, although the accurate intensities are hard to reproduce. The corresponding recrystallization textures, either generated through spontaneous recrystallization of the extruded profiles or through post-extrusion annealing, are far more challenging to reproduce with available recrystallization models.INTRODUCTION Extrusion is a widely applied thermal-mechanical process to produce aluminium profiles. The properties of the profiles, for example mechanical, fatigue, fracture, corrosion as well surface appearance, are strongly dependent on the underlying microstructure and texture, and the requirements with respect to these aspects may vary with applications (Ralston et al., 2010; Dumoulin et al., 2012; Donati et al., 2013). Moreover, it is often a challenge to produce extrusions with a consistent and homogenous grain structure and texture along as well as through the cross section of the profiles. It is thus vital to understand and be able to predict (model) how different microstructures and textures are formed and how they evolve during and after extrusion, as basis for controlling the final appearance and properties of extruded profiles."

"Goldcorp has embarked upon an ambitious, industry-leading, multi-year water use reduction effort. This is a proactive, voluntary effort that reflects our commitment to truly sustainable mining. This effort will focus on increasing water re-use and recycling, and reducing water inputs ultimately towards zero. All of our operating mines are expected to contribute to this effort and are currently in the process of developing plans to meet short and long term objectives. One of the largest needle movers to increase water re-use and recycling is in the area of tailings management. Within five to ten years at Goldcorp, it is envisioned that the need for wet tailings dams will be eliminated and that all new tailings facilities will consist of only filtered or dewatered tailings. Filtered tailings is developing into a mature technology with wide application in mine waste management. This paper describes a conceptual level evaluation on the transition from a slurry to a filtered tailings operation at the Cerro Negro mine in southern Argentina. Key benefits and challenges are highlighted.INTRODUCTION Goldcorp’s Cerro Negro operation is located in the Santa Cruz province in the Patagonian region of Argentina. Cerro Negro has been in operation since 2014 and commercial production was achieved on January 1, 2015. The processing capacity of the plant is 4,000 tonnes of ore per day and in 2016 produced 363,000 ounces of gold and 3.1 million ounces of silver (Goldcorp Inc., 2017). As the mine is located in a semi-arid area, it is important to evaluate technologies that could reduce freshwater consumption and maximize water re-use and recycle rates. The current tailings operation at Cerro Negro incorporates pumping of tailings slurry into a conventionally lined Tailings Storage Facility (TSF). Water is reclaimed from the tailings supernatant pond to the process plant via pumps, however, water losses occur due to evaporation and solution retention within the slurry tailings voids. Converting to a filtered or dewatered tailings operation would allow for increased water recovery prior to tailings disposal, and decreased water losses from evaporation and from retention in the tailings solids void space. This paper describes a conceptual level evaluation on the transition to filtered or dewatered tailings with the primary objective of moving closer Towards Zero Water."

Many metalliferous ?provinces are co-extensive with particular groups of sedimentary, volcanic, or :basic plutonic rocks. Deposits may be truly syngenetic (Rand, Rhodesia-Katanga, Mans-field, Blind River, White Pine); re-. concentrated by circulating waters (Colorado Plateau, Red Bed Coppers) ; or re-concentrated thermally during metamorphism and granitization (most uranium and lead-zinc provinces ?and some copper and gold provinces). Basalts may yield important cop-per provinces when folded and re-heated. Granitization of basalts which have not reached the chlorite-carbon-ate phase of metamorphism may produce copper provinces. If they reach ?the chlorite-carbonate stage, granitization may result in a gold province. Copper and copper-nickel provinces may result if gabbros are granitized, and a ?similar alteration of per-idotite may result in asbestos or nickel ores. Many similar associations are known. Granite is not a source of ore, but a result of heat. A classification of ?ore with respect to source rocks is of greater prospecting value than are classifications based on magmatic differentiation and hydrother-mal solution theories. Volcanic centres are important ore foci because the thermally unstable metallic sulphides may be concentrated here by a distillation process. The ores found in the hot spring deposits, viz., mercury, mercury sulphide, sulphur, and the compounds of ?antimony and arsenic, are not those which are soluble in water at low temperature (epithermal sub-division of hydrothermal class), abrut those which are unstable thermally at comparatively low temperatures . Water is one of the most common thermally unstable minerals, and generally accompanies the thermally activated ore-forming sulphides.

"Because of its wide areal extent, its numerous lithological facies and its high degree of metamorphism, the Quebec portion of the Grenville province has only partly been explored and prospected. Rock types that are economically among the most interesting in the Grenville are those of mafic and ultramafic compositions, because of their great potential for coppernickel and chromium-platinum. The peculiar mode of occurrence and the distribution of these igneous masses in which copper-nickel mineralization is known to occur indicate' two common geological features: (1) aerial photographs and/or topographic maps strongly' suggest close spatial (and possibly temporal and genetic) association of most of these mineralized mafic and ultramafic intrusions with circular structures; (2) when plotted on a large-scale map comprising the Quebec portion of the Grenville, these circular structures fall along two lines which could correspond to major tectonic features. Even though the genetic links among the mineralized mafic-ultramafic masses, the circular structures and the linear features are not yet fully understood, their associations are believed to be empirically valid and should therefore be used as geological tools by those interested in exploring the Grenville for copper-nickel and possibly chromium-platinum deposits. It should be noted that these mafic and ultramafic bodies do not appear to be spatially related to anorthosite complexes."
