"Résumé - Les seules productions de columbo-tantalite en Côte d'Ivoire sont effectuées dans les éluvions, colluvions et alluvions d'Issia, au Centre-Ouest de la Côte d'Ivoire. Même si un lien direct avec les roches granitiques est suspecté, aucune attention particulière n'a été accordée à l'étude de la minéralisation primaire en relation avec l'évolution de ces granites et des pegmatites associées. Ces granites, qui sont en intrusion dans les roches sédimentaires du Protérozoïque inférieur, comprennent: le granite orienté à deux micas (type Lobo), le granite orienté à muscovite dominante (type Bitapia) et le granite porphyroïde non orienté à muscovite dominante (type Issia). Les résultats de cette étude indiquent que les pegmatites à Nb-Ta-Be-Li sont liées au granite de type Issia. Les observations de terrain et les analyses sur roche totale montrent que: (1) les trois principaux granites de la région sont de type-S et peralumineux dans leur composition, (2) ils ont été formés pendant la période tardi- à post-Éburnéenne, (3) le granite de type Issia fut le dernier à se former.Les pegmatites liées au granite de type Issia ont été classées en quatre types : A- pegmatites stériles; B- pegmatites à Be; C- pegmatites zonées à Nb-Ta-Be; et D- pegmatites zonées à Be-Nb-Ta-Li. Les pegmatites zonées comprennent les zones suivantes: I- zone à aplite; II- zone graphique; III- zone à albite, microcline, béryl et columbo-tantalite; IV- zone à microcline massive; V- zone à quartztourmaline. Ces pegmatites présentent une zone d'altération métasomatique externe.La minéralisation de Ta, Nb, et Be est liée à la zone III des pegmatites de types C et D, la minéralisation de Li est associée aux greisens qui peuvent être observés n'importe où dans les pegmatites de type D. Les données de terrain et de laboratoire indiquent que le granite de type Issia est la roche parentale des pegmatites à éléments rares de la région. Les pegmatites minéralisées sont distribuées seulement autour du granite de type Issia et les patrons des terres rares des granites et ceux des pegmatites à éléments rares sont très similaires. Les analyses de la composition totale montrent un lien génétique entre le granite de type Issia et les pegmatites à éléments rares. Il est suggéré que les pegmatites ont été formées durant le transport et la cristallisation fractionnée du magma. Les éléments rares sont restés dans le liquide résiduel jusqu'à ce que les conditions favorables à leur précipitation soient atteintes.L'établissement de ce lien génétique ouvre des voies pour des nouvelles stratégies d'exploration."

Sulfate-reducing passive bioreactors efficiently treat acid mine drainage (AMD) by increasing its pH and alkalinity and by removing metals as sulfide precipitates, in addition to hydroxides and carbonates. However, the new mining legislation sets discharge limits based on physicochemical parameters and on the non-toxicity of treated effluent as well. In this study, toxicity was assessed for effluent from 3.5 L column bioreactors filled with mixtures of natural organic carbon sources and operated at two different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 7.3 d and 10 d for the treatment of a highly contaminated AMD. Acute toxicity was observed for D. magna, and a toxicity identification evaluation (TIE) procedure was performed to identify potential toxicants. To help the interpretation of the toxicity results, metal partition in the effluent was also determined by filtration and ultrafiltration, while geochemical modeling was performed for metal speciation evaluation. The 10 d HRT effluent was nonacutely lethal for rainbow trout but acutely lethal for D. magna, whereas the 7.3 d HRT effluent was toxic for both organisms. The toxicity to D. magna was eliminated by 2 h of aeration for the 10 d HRT effluent, and the TIE procedure suggested iron as a cause of toxicity. However, the 2 h aeration eliminated the toxicity of the 7.3 d HRT effluent, only if performed after the pH rising to 9.3. Data regarding metal speciation indicated instability of both effluents during aeration and were consistent with the toxicity being caused by iron. The study indicates that design of passive treatment should include sufficient HRT and posttreatment aeration to meet acute toxicity requirements. Real time analysis of ore quality between the mine and mill provides major benefits to copper mining and processing operations. Prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) is a proven technique that has been successfully applied for real time conveyed flow multi-elemental measurement. The advantage of PGNAA is that it measures through the full conveyed cross section continuously and provides representative element measurement without the need to constantly sample coarse (primary crushed) conveyed flows. High specification PGNAA analyzers enable accurate measurement over time increments as short as thirty seconds. Elements such as copper can be measured to a precision of 0.02% copper which is sufficient for high confidence in decisions for bulk flow diversion. Increments of eight tonnes are being diverted through a bulk ore sorting application to remove batches of waste from mill feed as well as divert material to different stockpiles based on ore quality. Longer measurement increments of two to five minutes are suitable for blending control of ores to reduce feed quality variability and to control average ore quality within a target range. Feed blends can be adjusted as frequently as required but typically multiple measurement increments are composited to produce a rolling average ore quality. The paper details two case studies where analyzers have been successfully used to measure conveyed flows for blending and bulk diversion applications. The real time measurements of ore composition are also used for ore reconciliation, in metal accounting and providing process operators with advance warning of ore quality changes that may affect grinding performance and cause process upsets. Real time ore quality measurement has proven beneficial in improving copper processing performance through better utilising plant capacity in a leaching operation, optimising ore feed quality, and reducing unnecessary processing of waste. INTRODUCTION Representative real time elemental analysis of conveyed ore quality using fully penetrative technologies has been available to the minerals industry since the 1990s. The Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) technique was developed into a conveyed material analyser and soon adopted by the cement and coal industries which recognised the benefits in real time quality management. These commodities were ideally suited to this measurement technique as operations generally involved conveying bulk material prior to processing. Measured quality was used to divert material to different destinations or used to control blending for improved quality consistency. Uptake in the minerals industry, however, has been slow until the last ten years, and particularly until the mid-2010s.

"Certain environmental problems can substantially alter the physical properties of the subsurface. In such cases, geophysical methods can be used to map the distribution of subsurface contamination or buried wastes prior to drilling or sampling. For example, inorganic contamination by acids, bases, salts, or metallic ions can be detected by instruments that measure ground conductivity; metallic objects such as buried drums, pipelines, etc. can be located by magnetic survey, and radioactive mine waste can be mapped by radiometric techniques. Geophysical methods can also be used to characterize site geology. If carried out prior to development, they can assist in identifying areas of high- and low permeability and sources of natural contamination. The methods can also be used to establish baseline values and to locate stable areas for development of environmentally sensitive facilities. Application of geophysical methods to environmental problems is illustrated with examples from base-metal mines, uranium operations, and potash and oil-sands operations. Particular attention is given to the problem of acid mine drainage. =IntroductionGeophysical methods have been used for many years by the mining industry in exploration and geotechnical investigations. The basic techniques for mapping variations in physical properties of the subsurface have been adapted to meet the special needs of resource exploration and development in the coal, potash , oil sands, industrial minerals, precious metals, and base-metal industries. Now the mining industry is facing another challenge: to operate the mining cycle, from discovery to closure, with minimum impact on the environment. This involves the rehabilitation of abandoned mining sites, the minimization and effective containment of pollutants at operating and developing sites, and the longterm containment and monitoring of sites after mine closures.Some of the most difficult aspects of environmental control and monitoring relate to the location of buried waste and contaminated fluids in the subsurface. As in the search for buried ore deposits or in geotechnical investigations, geophysics can be a valuable aid in subsur face environmental investigations. Investigations can be remedial , involving the location or monitoring of existing problems, or preventative, where problem areas are identified or background values are established before site development. In either case, geophysical methods should not be considered as a substitute for drilling. Geophysical interpretations in general do not provide the detail required for a complete environmental or geotechnical investigation. They are most useful as rapid reconnaissance methods for targeting subsequent drilling or for interpreting subsurface condit ions away from drill holes. Chondrite-normalized rare earth elements (REEs) profiles and high field strength elements (HFSEs) in rocks and minerals represent important tracers of geological processes. Of these the birdwing-shaped profile with negatively-sloped light REE ((La/Sm)N >1), positively-sloped heavy REE ((Tb/Yb)N <1), and strong negative Eu anomalies is commonly associated with large-scale hydrothermal systems or granitic intrusions. In a different way, severe deviation of Nb/Ta, Hf/Sm ratios from those of chondrite may also indicate hydrothermal signatures in the rocks involved as these ratios are generally stable and chondritic in normal magmatism as a result of their nearly identical ionic radii and charge. In this study, we present a typical setting where birdwing-shaped REE profiles together with Nb/Ta, Hf/Sm ratios unusually higher than those of chondrite, are systematically developed in a series of garnetite, quartzofeldspathic gneiss, Fe- or Mg-rich aluminous gneiss, and sulfides and magnetite. These units and associated Cu-Au mineralization form a VHMS-style hydrothermal system in the granulite-facies 1.4 Ga -1.35 Ga volcano-plutonic, arc-related Bondy gneiss complex (BGC), western Grenville Province, Canada. Outside the recognized hydrothermal system of the BGC, such REE profiles are not observed. Instead the surrounding felsic and mafic gneisses display primary trace element characteristics of island-arc magmas, suggesting that granulitefacies metamorphism did not modify significantly the trace element signatures of the protoliths. Although magmatic fractionation of accessory minerals can produce birdwing-shaped profiles, it cannot explain the extreme fractionation of isovalent trace elements (Nb-Ta) and the high Zr content of the hydrothermal rocks. Neither is it compatible with the lack of significant Nd depletion that would normally incur during this process. Following our study, we demonstrate that F-rich fluid and mineral phases enriched in LREEs and HREEs respectively must have been involved in the main hydrothermal alteration and REE fractionation process in the BGC. Preferential removal of REEs from the interstitial glass of the volcanic protoliths together with dissolution of plagioclase and subsequent external influx of HREEs and HFSEs can produce birdwing-shaped REE profiles. In turn, such profiles and/or unusual Nb/Ta, Hf/Sm ratios can be used as a sensitive marker of hydrothermally altered rocks in targeting mineral exploration.

This paper builds on presentations made at the Conference of Metallurgists (COM) 2015, COM 2017 and Extraction 2018 and associated papers published in the respective conference proceedings. Based on the classic Brundtland Commission definition of sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs,” the paper describes how metal mining can be compatible with sustainable development and how sustainability considerations have been applied in the primary copper industry, using several examples of sustainable mining practices from ASARCO LLC operations. Finally, the paper discusses how these considerations might be used in the future by discussing the need for developing a sustainable development strategy and how this strategy can be aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. INTRODUCTION The primary copper industry comprises: mining (also referred to as “extraction”); mineral processing (also referred to as “beneficiation, “milling” or “concentration,”) which includes leaching, solvent extraction (SX), crushing, grinding, froth and flotation operations; and metallurgical processing which includes smelting and converting; refining, which includes fire-refining or anode refining and electro-refining; and electrowinning (EW). There are two routes for producing refined copper: hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical. The hydrometallurgical route comprises mining (open-pit and underground), mineral processing (crushing and grinding — for heap leaching only; leaching and SX) and metallurgical processing (EW). The pyrometallurgical route involves mining, mineral processing (crushing, grinding and froth flotation) and metallurgical processing (smelting, fire refining and electro- refining). The primary copper industry is capital, water, resource and energy intensive with the potential for significant environmental impacts, if the environmental aspects are not properly managed. ASARCO LLC (Asarco) was organized in 1899 as the American Smelting And Refining Company. Originally a consolidation of several lead-silver smelting companies, it evolved over the years into an integrated producer of primary non-ferrous metals, including copper, lead and zinc and associated co-products. Grupo México, S.A.B. de C.V (Grupo México) acquired Asarco in 1999. Today, Asarco is a vertically integrated producer of primary refined copper and associated co-products such as gold, silver, selenium and tellurium. Asarco operates three open-pit mines and mills, two leach, SX-EW plants, a copper smelter in Arizona and a copper electrolytic refinery in Texas.

"This paper presents a preliminary assessment of the technical and economic feasibility of a caustic leach - electrowinning process for the recovery of zinc and lead from electric arc furnace baghouse dust at a mini-steelplant. Recent studies and literature are referenced briefly as they pertain to the formation and characterization of dust, toxicity considerations and alternative dust treatment and disposal options.Laboratory testwork results, published data, pilot plant experience and anticipated influences resulting from recycling residues are used for the purpose of developing a conceptual design for a caustic leach - electrowinning plant to treat 15,000 tonnes/year of dust at a one million tonnes /year capacity steelplant in Canada.Target economic studies, comprising preliminary estimates of capital and operating costs, revenues and rate of return are presented. Economic and commercial considerations concerning the relative merits of dust treatment at a centralized facility compared with an on-site plant are discussed.IntroductionThe treatment or disposal of mini-steelplant electric arc furnace (EAF) baghouse dust has been given increasing attention in recent years for two principal reasons. Firstly, the dust is now classed as a hazardous waste material under V.S. EPA regulations which prohibit its disposal in dumps other than controlled landfill sites. Secondly, the dust contains certain metal values, notably zinc and lead, which may be economically recoverable, depending on the costs associated with disposal resulting from enforcement of the EPA regulations. Other metallurgical dusts and waste materials, from both ferrous and non-ferrous operations, may require the same considerations as EAF baghouse dust.Several studies have been carried out to examine various aspects of dust treatment but few commercial plants are in operation. Technology employed uses pyrometallurgical techniques. Commercial-scale hydrometallurgical plants are not known to exist although small-scale plants are frequently more economically attractive than their pyrometallurgical counterparts which generally require economies of scale to be viable.The concentration of mini-steelplants in northeast V.S.A. and southeast Canada merits study to determine whether or not dust treatment for metals recovery is a commercially feasible alternative to disposal.This paper examines the technical and economic feasibility of a caustic leach - electrowinning process for the recovery of zinc and lead from EAF baghouse dust at an on-site ministeel plant processing carbon steel scrap and discusses economic and commercial considerations pertaining to dust treatment at a larger, centralized facility."

Detailed knowledge of velocity-depth trends is essential for constructing well-to seismic ties, determining background velocity and generating synthetic seismic traces for interpreting seismic amplitudes in terms of porosity, lithology and pore fluid type. The acoustic properties of shales are of particular importance in the exploration setting as shales constitute more than 80% of sediments and rocks in siliclastic environments. Seismic and sonic log data may be used for estimating overpressure in shales in order to maintain borehole stability during drilling. In addition, velocities in shales can be used for predicting its mechanical properties and hence, borehole collapse. Despite of the apparent importance of understanding shale acoustics, sonic logs in shales are frequently unavailable or unreliable especially for older wells. Hence, it is essential to compute pseudo-velocity logs from other available information. This can be accomplished by using empirical relationships or rock physics transforms. In this study we have compared the predictive power of resistivity (Faust 1951, Hubert 2008) and porosity based models (Wyllie 1956, Holt & Fjær 2003) for computing synthetic P-wave velocity logs using wireline log data from mudstone intervals at three North Sea wells. The wells 6507/2-1, 6507/2-2 and 6507/2-1 are located at the Haltenbanken area at the Norwegian Sea. The wells targeted hydrocarbon potential at the upper Cretaceous and lower Tertiary sandstone sequences. The sandstone beds are overlain by thick Tertiary and Cretaceous sequences of mudstones. Since our primary goal is to model acoustic velocities in shale, we used wireline data from the Nordland (NL), Rogaland (RL) and Hordaland (HL) groups that are mainly composed of mudstone. The mudstone beds were identified from the well log data by using natural gamma log, sonic and resistivity data as well as information from the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate website. The volume of shale was estimated from the natural gamma log and the data points with values higher than 0.65 were discarded. Similarly, the data points with shale volume less than 40 % were discarded. Furthermore, exceptionally high resistivity values amounting to more than 6 Ohm m were not included in the analysis. Porosities were determined from the density log assuming 2.7 and 1.05 g/cm3 for matrix and fluid densities, respectively. The depth that was used for calculating Vp from Faust (1953) was the depth below mudline in order to the compare of well data from wells that have been drilled at different depths (Hubert 2008).

Copper concentrates contain an increasing amount of arsenic, as the older sources of cleaner ores are depleted. At the same time, the market-determined price penalties on arsenic rich concentrates are rising due to limited arsenic treatment capacity at smelters and increasingly stringent environmental emissions limits, necessitating arsenic removal from the copper concentrates. Heating the concentrate to about 700°C can remove significant amounts of arsenic (as elemental and/or sulfide); however, it is important to achieve that removal economically and with due consideration to post-roasting arsenic (toxic waste) treatment. A comparison is made among different roasting options (kilns, multi-hearths and fluid beds) to qualify their potential application to arsenic roasting of copper concentrates. Both direct and indirect methods of heating as well as inert, air and oxygen atmosphere options are considered. Technology comparisons are made with respect to the roaster’s operation, its off-gas treatment and arsenic stabilization. INTRODUCTION In the last twenty years, the arsenic content in globally produced copper concentrates have risen steadily due to the depletion of cleaner ores and the increase in complex concentrate production. Smelter contracts typically limit arsenic to less than 0.5wt%, with a penalty paid per unit of additional arsenic and other contaminants such as antimony. While penalties can vary, they can be on the order of $70/dry metric tonne of concentrate per 1% of arsenic. Strategies used by miners to avoid the price penalties have been to blend clean and complex concentrates, and to remove arsenic from complex concentrates to achieve smelter limits. Arsenic can be removed from copper concentrates by the heat-induced decomposition of the predominant enargite mineral (Cu3AsS4) at ~700°C. Roasting at such elevated temperature is a commercially proven option, but still suffers from process, cost and environmental challenges. After roasting, the released arsenic sulfide fumes can be separated from most of the entrained concentrate dust in cyclones. Then, the As2S3 laden off-gas can be oxidized to generate a still volatile oxide (As2O3), which can be further separated from the residual concentrate dust in a hot electrostatic separator. Next, the off-gas can be cooled with air or water, to either deposit the arsenic oxide in a dry or dissolved state. Dissolved arsenic acid can be oxidized to As(V) and reacted with iron to yield a stabilized ferrihydrite precipitate or scorodite that can be safely disposed. In the case of dry arsenic trioxide, it can be mixed with reactants (e.g. iron) and fluxes before thermal stabilization in a glass matrix, thus eliminating the need for costly oxidation.

Separations, which form along stratigraphic boundaries in the roofs of potash mines, pose a serious safety concern. If these separations go undetected they can lead to falls of ground. The current method of identifying the location and extent of these separations is through manual scaling (sounding) using an aluminium rod. The potash mining companies would like to have a tool, which could quickly and reliably detect these separations and distinguish between them and clay seams. This paper presents the results of field trials undertaken at various potash mines in Saskatchewan belonging to the member companies of the Saskatchewan Potash Producers Association. A ground penetrating radar instrument from RST called SUSI (stepped frequency, ultra-wideband, synthetic aperture radar instrument) was used. SUSI has the ability of working over various frequency bandwidths. Four mines were chosen for these field trials, covering the different geological characteristics encountered in the Saskatchewan potash mines: Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan?s (PCS) Allan and Lanigan Divisions, Agrium?s Vanscoy Potash Operations and IMC Potash?s K2 Mine. These field trials indicated that stepped frequency ground penetrating radar technology could be ?tuned? to identify both separations and clay stratigraphy in the softrock, potash mine environment, based on the different spectral responses of the features.

Produced by the conventional TIG welding CMSX-4 welds had been studied. It was demostrated that microstructure of welds depended on filler materials, welding parameters and joint design. Epitaxial solidification of CMSX-4 clad deposits produced a directionally solidified structure while welding with the similar filler material. Defects free clad welds were obtained by TIG welding without preheating using similar and dissimilar filler materials.

"This is an extended abstract for a keynote lecture delivered by the author during the 2015 ISRM congress in Montreal on the application of the numerical discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA) method in rock mechanics practice. Due to the large scope of the topic this lecture will focus on studies performed by the rock mechanics group at Ben-Gurion University, alone or in collaboration which other research groups, and is not intended to provide a comprehensive review of everything that has been done on the subject worldwide during the past two decades. A forthcoming textbook (Hatzor et al., in preparation) will attempt to provide such comprehensive coverage.DDA has been developed by Dr. Gen-hua Shi while he was doing his PhD studies under the supervision of Professor R. E. Goodman at U. C. Berkeley (Shi, 1988). Dr. Shi has invented a new numerical discrete element method which provides a solution for dynamic deformation of block systems, hence its applicability to rock mechanics practice. The method is similar in essence to the finite element method in its implicit formulation of the time integration scheme and where in every time step the minimum potential energy of the entire system is sought, but here every element is a finite block with six degrees of freedom. The blocks are assumed to be stiff (simply deformable) so that most of the energy is consumed by slip along pre-existing discontinuities, the frictional resistance of which is assumed to obey the Coulomb-Mohr failure criterion for rock joints. The greatest advantage of DDA over alternative numerical discrete element methods is its robust area (volume) integration which ensures great accuracy even when the blocks are of irregular shapes, including non-convex blocks which may contain holes. The greatest disadvantage is the necessity to solve in every time step very large matrices of unknowns, imposing great CPU demand when the block system involves a large number of blocks. Another disadvantage is the sensitivity of the solution to the choice of the penalty parameter which is implemented in DDA in the form of stiff springs that are attached to contacts once detected automatically.The inherently dynamic formulation of the DDA method lends itself to solution of dynamic problems in rock mechanics. Dynamic analysis with DDA can be performed in different ways corresponding to different rock mechanics problems and loading conditions. Three main classes of loading conditions which are relevant to rock mechanics applications are discussed here: 1) dynamic loading of a single bock which rests on a stationary foundation, 2) response of a block to dynamic loading of the foundations, 3) wave propagation through a block system.The most common approach is to introduce the dynamic force to a specific block in an otherwise fixed block system and check the resulting deformation, typically the time dependent displacement or rotation of the loaded block. This approach is particularly useful for dynamic rock slope stability studies when a stability of a specific rock block against earthquake vibrations is in question. The first 2D-DDA benchmark test of this approach was performed by Hatzor and Feintuch (2001) who introduced harmonic acceleration functions into a block which rests on an inclined plane. The analytical solution proposed for this problem by Hatzor and Feintuch (2001) was later generalized by Kamai and Hatzor (2008). The first 3D-DDA benchmarking for this approach was presented by Bakun-Mazor et al. (2012) who studied single and double face sliding of blocks which rest on stationary foundations and subjected to harmonic input acceleration functions."

Dunsmuir Ventures? Nanuq diamond project is located approximately 250 km northeast of Baker Lake and 170 km north of Chesterfield Inlet. It occurs at the intersection of the Wager Bay shear zone with the Keewatin Arch, a major long-lived crustal uplift. The newly discovered diamondiferous kimberlites at Rankin Inlet, Repulse Bay and on Melville Peninsula also occur along this arch. Kimberlite indicator mineral (KIM) sampling has outlined a distinct KIM train more than 35 km long and 6 km wide. Geomorphological studies, boulder displacements and dispersion of magnetite in tills suggest that glacial transport distances were on the order of 4 to 6 kms only. The presence of multiple sources within the main Nanuq indicator train would account for its length and breadth. A second train has been located on the west central part of the property and anomalous concentrations of KIM occur elsewhere. Pyrope garnets (G9?s and G10?s), diamond inclusion field (DI) eclogitic garnets and DI chromites were confirmed by microprobe analyses. Clinopyroxene thermobarometry indicates a cool geotherm, approximately 35 mW/m2, and that mantle within the diamond stability field was tapped. An aeromagnetic survey has identified a number of anomalies. Those with down ice KIM support will have ground geophysical follow-up and will be tested in a spring 2004 drill program. Dunsmuir is optimistic that this will lead to the discovery of a new kimberlite cluster on the Nanuq property.

"Palabora Mining Copper has a unique ore body composition which unlike other copper ore bodies has three main components in significant proportions; these are copper bearing ore, magnetite and dolerite. The high content of dolerite, a hard barren material, creates a high proportion of pebbles which normally are recycled back to the mill. This action increases the mill bearing pressure and power progressively until corrective actions are taken.A logical action to solve the pebbles generation would be to incorporate a pebble crusher. This in fact was done however two fundamental issues were encountered; the high content of magnetite and existence of a cyclone classification section. Due to the high content of magnetite, metal detectors have not been able to work efficiently to separate tramp metal which causes damage to the pebble crushers. The existence of cyclones in the circuit had a detrimental effect on the final product when the pebbles crusher was online producing coarse sandy material.Due to the difficulties in treating pebbles via conventional procedures and the unique Palabora ore composition and characteristics, sorting technology was investigated at laboratory and pilot scale. It was found that a combination of optical and electromagnetic sorting could efficiently separate dolerite from the copper bearing and magnetite ores.This paper reports the findings of the laboratory and pilot scale work performed and discusses the additional benefits to the circuit."

"Unique production and environmental problems are associated with multiple seam mining where dragfines are used for overburden and interburden removal. On the production side, the problems are decreased dragfine efficiency in chopdown operations, the general need for spoil rehandle, complications in sequencing stripping and coal handling operations, and potential stability problems in highly stacked spoil. Many variations of dragline methods have been reported in the literature to encounter these problems. Because of the physical properties and peculiar hydrology of sub-arctic region mining of multiple seams in such areas probably could not be done with the methods used in temperate regions.The properties of thawed material would make spoil hard to place in a stable manner and thus would influence the mini sequence. For instance, multiple seam mining which requires some rehandling of spoil and prolonged exposure of overburden and interburden material might be precluded by the instability of thawed spoil and therefore mining techniques have to be modified. Since the deployment and operation of a dragline in modes different from conventional schemes will affect productivity, it will be necessary to study the effects on production of changing the dragfine operational schemes. This paper presents a heuristic simulation model of multi-seam dragline operation of a sub-arctic mine that can be used to analyze the handling of overburden and detailed study of the dragfine performance."

"The combination of A C induction motor and flu id coupling, of either the fixed or variable filling type, constitutes a simple, low cost, highly reliable drive unit, with many applications in the mining field.The paper will, however, concentrate on the variable filling fluid coupling in three principal applications-conveyor starting, infinitely variable speed control for slurry and slimes pumping and dewatering pumps for deep mines. Fluid couplings can be used with standard or custom-built control gear equipment, ranging from the most simple, time-based open loop types, to those having the latest microprocessor techniques.IntroductionThe first industrial applications of fluid couplings included their use in the mining field as hydraulic slip regulators for flywheel generating sets. These installations, usually rated at around 1700 to 2500 hp, were located at mine shafts where the electrical grid transmission lines were not strong enough to cater for the peak power demands of the cage winding cycle. In Canada, the first two significant examples of variable filling fluid couplings for mining were on conveyor drives, at Steep Rock Mines Limited, closely followed by the major iron ore handling term inal on the St. Lawrence River at Sept-Iles. Successful and reliable operat ion of the fluid couplings at these two sites set the pattern for use on many subsequent mining projects throughout the Canadian Continent."

An exploration program seeking kimberlite pipes, the common primary hosts for diamonds, Was&apos; conducted during the years 1979 through 1982 in the James Bay Lowlands of Ontario by Selco Mining Corporation (now the Mining Division of BP Resources Canada) and Esso Minerals Canada. The area to be explored was selected on the basis of its regional geological setting, and because of the known presence of kimberlite indicator minerals in the region. The primary exploration technique was low level airborne magnetic surveying, followed by detailed ground geophysics. This work located many pipe-like bodies, with diameters of a few hundred metres, as well as several dykes. Targets located by these geophysical methods were drilled, intersecting a total of45 intrusions, consisting of34 alkaline diatremes containing tuffisitic breccias, 7 carbonatites, and 4 massive alnoites. K-Ar determinations indicated ages of 152 Ma and 180 Ma for two of the massive alnoites. The texture and general mineralogy of the tuffisitic breccias are similar to those of diatreme facies kimberlites, but detailed examination of their mineralogy and chemistry demonstrated that they lie within the alnoitic rather than the kimberlitic compositional field. Although the exploration program did not lead to the discovery of true kimberlites, it did demonstrate the presence of a large, previously unknown province of alkaline volcanic activity, which has no surface expression.

Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) and enargite (Cu3AsS4) are among the most important copper sulfides. At present, many known deposits of these minerals are uneconomic to process because they are of too low grade, insufficient size or too remote to be cost effectively treated with conventional technologies that can deal with their refractory nature. Therefore, developing an effective, low cost extraction process for recovery of copper from them is important. The research presented in this paper will deal with potentially cost effective strategies involving catalysed processing, studied under conditions relevant to recycle heap leach conditions. The present account summarises some of the main findings from the research program carried out at Murdoch University between 2014 and 2018 that has investigated the effects of the common leaching parameters, major and minor species present in the leach system and additives on the rate and extent of copper extraction from low-grade ores, in which primary copper sulfide minerals such as chalcopyrite and enargite were the dominant copper minerals. The study involved batch leaching tests, detailed structural and mineralogical characterisation and thermochemical modelling under conditions relevant to heap leaching. The results have demonstrated that silver in particular has a strong catalysing effect on the extraction of copper from ore under the leach recycle conditions and, at an adequate dosage, can effectively overcome surface passivation, enabling almost complete extraction of copper from chalcopyrite as well as enargite. The aim of this paper is to present the effect of the studied additives and to briefly elaborate on the mechanism of the silver catalysed leaching process. In addition, the presence of certain secondary agents was shown to lower the critical dosage of silver and promote extraction. The data from the study allowed the development of a theory for the silver catalysed reaction mechanism, which enables further optimisation and cost-effective application of this strategy in practice. INTRODUCTION Researching the extraction of copper from chalcopyrite is important as it is the most abundant copper mineral in the earth’s crust. The majority of ores containing this mineral are processed by flotation to produce a concentrate, followed by smelting and electrorefining. However, most reserves available nowadays are of low grade or limited in size, and therefore not suitable for this conventional approach. Hydrometallurgical processing via heap leaching with or without the aid of bacteria has been shown to be potentially economical. Chalcopyrite is refractory though and suffers from slow leaching kinetics and poor overall extraction, so understanding the mechanism of how it leaches has received significant attention by researchers working in this field over the past 50 years. The refractoriness, which is the main issue with the hydrometallurgical approach, is generally described as passivation of the chalcopyrite surface whereby a surface coating is formed that blocks the reaction interface or wetting of the chalcopyrite, limiting the copper extraction. Exactly what this layer is made of or how the issue could be overcome has been the subject of intense study and debate for many years. One of the limitations of the work to date is that much of the research focus has been on typical initial leaching conditions, while there has been relatively little research into how the leaching is affected under recycle solution conditions where certain metal ions (Fe, Mg, Al) have often accumulated in the liquor. This occurs because the leach solution exiting a heap contains many species from the dissolution of gangue minerals and typically this solution is returned to irrigate the heap, once the copper has been removed, leading to an accumulation of these species.

"A new process is disclosed for the recovery of gold and/or silver values from activated carbon wherein they are adsorbed as cyanide complexes. A unique chemistry allows the new process to use mill process water containing an inexpensive, non-hazardous compound as the eluant. The new process has an elution period of 5 hours at 98°C. The gold in the eluant can be recovered by electrowinning or zinc precipitation. The new elution process is simple, reliable, and provides an eluted carbon that may not require thermal regeneration before reuse. Retrofitting the new process to existing processes such as Zadra, Anglo, and others will not require significant capital expenditures.IntroductionThe efficient and reliable elution process for gold/silver from activated carbon is a very important process in the gold mining industry.
