"The Iron Ore Company Of Canada's Carol Project is located in Labrador City, Newfoundland. Labrador City is some 912 air kilometers northeast of Montreal, and 417 ratl kilometers north of Sept-Iles, Quebec.Over 2,800 employees work at the Carol Project to produce some 20.0 million tonnes of concentrate and 10.5 million tonnes of pellets annually.In 1979 our Training Department started to develop the DACUM System of training for our Concentrator Operations Department.DACUM is an individualized, self-learning, training program. It is both a curriculum plan and an evaluation instrument.To date, the DACUM System has been completed for all occupations in the concentrator and work will commence shortly to develop DACUM for our Pellet Plant and Mine Operations Departments."

Talc has been mined at Madoc since 1896, the oldest mine in continuous operation in Canada. Canada Talc Industries Limited operates the Henderson and Conley deposits by underground methods. A newly discovered East zone is being de veloped by open pit. The raw Henderson talc is a foliated talc schist of high purity and whiteness; Conley talc is a white talcose dolomite. Products are used primarily as fillers in paints, plastics and rubber.

Alkali cracking followed by chloride-based leaching is one of the prominent methods for rare earth element processing. Regeneration of the leach lixiviant, namely hydrochloric acid, is a critical operation in the process. A number of different process routes are available for recovery of hydrochloric acid from chloride solutions. The objective of this paper is to discuss various recovery routes and analyze the impact of several input variables on the variable operating cost.

"This Precious metals content copper scrap is treated with a copper smelting process, and copper and precious metals are recovered. The precious metal lost in the slag is increasing with increasing of treated scrap amount. To determine the portion of the precious metals chemically dissolved and that associated with the mechanically trapped matte in the slag will be a key factor to improve the recovery of those metals. The distribution of precious metals between copper matte and FeOx-SiO2 slag phases is determined at 1300 oC and a fixed partial pressure of SO2 of 0.1 atm for the matte grades from 40 to 70 mass% of copper. The distribution ratios show a tendency to increase when the grade of matte is increased. In addition, the solubility of platinum and rhodium in the FeOx-SiO2-CaO slag under the air and the solubility of platinum in the FeOx-SiO2 slag equilibrated with a pure platinum or the Pt-Cu alloy were determined at 1300oC in the range of oxygen partial pressure from 10-9 to 10-7. The solubility of platinum and rhodium in the slag tends to increase with increasing content of copper in the slag and oxygen partial pressure. INTRODUCTIONThe stringency of the supply and demand of platinum group metal (PGM) intensifies by localization for resources and increase of the demand for PGM, furthermore, smelting and the recycling of PGM in the nonferrous smelting process take an important role. Scrap containing a precious metal for the purpose of collection of PGM is treated by copper smelting recently. With increase of the treatment amounts, loss of PGM in slags is the serious problem.In considering of PGM loss in slags, knowledge of the distribution behavior for PGM between slag and matte phases or slag and copper phases and the PGM solubility in slags is important. The distribution ratios of silver and gold between the FeOx-SiO2 slag and the Fe-Cu matte were reported by Roghani (Roghani et al., 2000), Shinha (Shinha et al., 1985) and Takeda (Takeda et al., 1993) However, there is no data for the PGM distribution ratio. On the other hand, the PGM solubility in slags was reported by Sano (Sano et al., 1997) However, there is very few report for the solubility of PGM in the nonferrous smelting slags."

IN a previous paper by Douglas and Gillies (1), a simple field test was given for gold. Later work by the present writers, and by others who have kindly written to us, shows that the test is not as satisfactory as it was hoped. In many cases, the gold mirror is completely obscured by a dense precipitate which, up to the present, it has been found impossible to remove. After many attempts, we have temporarily given up the iodine test and have been working on a simple pyridine reaction based on the work of Putnam, Roberts, and Selchow (2): The ore to be tested is ground to a fine flour. Place half a gram of this powdered ore (an amount that will cover a Canadian ten-cent piece, not heaped) in a six-inch test-tube and add 5 c.c. of aqua regia. The aqua regia. should be made up on each occasion, using four parts of hydrochloric acid and one part of nitric acid, both concentrated. Shake the solution in the test-tube for about one minute and allow to settle until dear. The rime to settle may be 30 to 60 minutes. When dear, a drop of the solution is with-drawn with a fine, dean eye-dropper or capillary tube and placed on à small glass plate. A slide such as is used for mounting rock sections is suitable. Now place an equal sized drop of pyridine solution on the plate beside that of the aqua regia solution to be tested. The pyridine solution, containing nine volumes of hydrogen bromide to one volume of pyridine, can be made up in advance and carried in a glass-stoppered bottle. Join the two drops with a glass thread or fine, dean stick, and allow the merged drops to stand undisturbed. I t is well to place the slide on a piece of white paper so that the presence of the crystals which may form can be easily seen. The time for their formation will vary with the amount of gold present, but the slide should be allowed to stand for at least 30 minutes before negative results are reported. A hand lens of at !east ten magnifications is essential. If gold is present, minute red crystals will form around the margin of the drops as these drops slowly evaporate.

This combination of natural problems and political solutions requires the development of new management mechanisms, to bridge the gaps among us, as individuals, as professions, as interest groups and so on; indeed, even as countries;• and gaps there are : about as many gaps as the people involved : many of them with new and changing expectations, often mutually exclusive and not negotiable.The challenge of these relationships and communications among so many different interests is one of the keys to effective environmental management.Like any game, this one has rules and they are new, too. These rules are evident not just in new legislation - tough legislation with draconian penalties; they are also evident in new and exacting business policies, value driven and just as unforgiving of poor performance. "The distribution of mineralized provinces is analyzed on the basis of their genetic link with specific blocks of the earth's crust including ancient platforms, mobile belts and zones of tectonicmagmatic activation. Mobile and fold belts surround the Siberian platform in Russia and the Kaapvaal craton in South Africa, with decreasing age zoning away from ancient platform margins. The main differences in the geological development of the two cratonic areas are: (1) the long period before the final stabilization of the Siberian platform (3600 Ma to 1600 Ma) and the comparatively short period of time for the stabilization of the Kaapvaal craton (3600 Ma to 3050 Ma) and (2) the intensive multiple activation of the marginal zones of the Siberian platform and the tectonicallycontrolled, magmatic sedimentary, intracratonic activity, typical of the Kaapvaal craton. Mineralization of the Siberian platform is largely characterized by marginal reactivation zones of differing ages although mineralized intracratonic Cu-bearing basins of Proterozoic age are also known. Mineralization of the Kaapvaal craton is mainly related to the formation of the intracratonic basins i.e., Witwatersrand (Au, U) and Transvaal (Au). The latter is characterized by multi-age volcanic-intrusive activity including the emplacement of Bushveld Complex (Cu, Ni, Pt, Cr, Au, V). The Siberian platform is characterized by the prolonged development of inherited mineralization from Archean until the late Mesozoic. The main period of mineralization in the Kaapvaal craton is restricted to the middle Proterozoic.The Baykal-Patomskaya and Namaqua-Natal mobile zones occupy similar positions adjacent to the Siberian and Kaapvaal cratons, respectively, and demonstrate similar modes of metallogenic development: i.e., the early formation of exhalative Pb-Zn-Cu deposits during the early stage and magmatic Cu deposits during the late stage. The more remote mobile belt near the Siberian platform, the Trans-Baykal, is characterized by intensive multi-age mineralization (Wo, Mo, Sn, fluorite), related to a period of tectonic-magmatic activation. The Saldania Belt occupies a similar position near the Kaapvaal craton but is known for its poor Au, and Cu mineralization. It does, however, have some similarities with Trans-Baykal Belt in regard to Mo-W bearing granitoids.The phenomenon of interference of geosynclinal, orogenic, platform, and tectono-magmatic activation regimes is known for the Russian section of the Pacific Ocean Volcanic Belt."

Australia is one of the world’s leading exporters of bulk commodities and the extensive use of sampling equipment is key to the successful management of each mining operation. At the process plant, without a full understanding of the feed, product and tails, it is impossible to fully optimise the performance of the plant, such that the metallurgical balance is often open to error. At the port, a statistically correct, bias free and compliant sampling system is crucial to ensuring exported minerals are reflective of their true value and to avoid penalties. Over the last decade, as a result of the iron ore boom, there has been high demand for reliable, representative and standard compliant solids sample systems in Australia. This paper reviews several solids sampling applications at Australian mine sites, the challenges and experience gained and how the implementation of reliable representative sampling systems has provided better understanding of plant process performance, improved plant control and overall benefits to the operations. INTRODUCTION Mining is the primary contributor to the Australian economy with Australia ranking in the top 4 in economic resources for 21 primary industrial minerals in 2016 (Britt, et al., 2017). Australia is one of the world leaders in the export of the majority of its commodities including gold, copper and iron ore (Britt, et al., 2017). Therefore, a suitable and standard compliant sampling system is essential for evaluating plant performance and content verification. At the mine and at the port, the larger iron ore miners in Australia have developed stockpile models to predict the grade of their ore down to individual blocks of the stockpile. This allows the miner to create the right blend of material for sale to their customers and ensures they are not underselling their product or at risk of penalties for impurities or low grade. As an example, the average difference between the benchmark 62% Fe and low grade 58% Fe fines at the time of this report averaged US $20/tonne according to the Metal Bulletin Iron Ore Index (Fastmarkets MB, 2019). At a shipload of 180kt this would be a variation of US $3.6M. Whilst this is an extreme example, it highlights the economic importance of producing the correct grade product and a recognised representative sample of said product.

"The underground operations of Kidd Creek Mines uses an average of 450 U.S. gpm water during regular operations, and discharges an average of 800 U.S. gpm through consecutive staged pumping lifts of 1200f t.Water is used as a flushing medium for the drilling operations and as a dust suppressant for drawpoint mucking. The water retains an average of 5% suspended solids by weight which is removed underground before being pumped to the surface. This paper outlines the treatment of the mine water for the removal of suspended solids which are chemically treated to settle out as a sludge product of 60% solids by weight. This process reduces the sludge handling operation by 50%. The sludge is systematically disposed into the ore passes.IntroductionThe Kidd Creek minesite, located 27 km north of Timmins, Ontario, produces 4.5 million tonne s of copper, lead, zinc and silver ores annually from its No. I and No.2 underground mining operations. Both mines use a sublevel blasthole stoping method of extraction.Water from the underground operation passes through a series of surface settling ponds, where it is treated to remove heavy metal ions from solution. A blend of the pond effluent with fresh water from Kidd Creek, supply the underground with water at an average rate of 450 U.S. gpm. Water flows from the production zones through coarse sumps and into a main pumping station. There are five main pumping stations underground, three in No. I Mine and two in the No.2 Mine.The No. 2 Mine pumping stations are located on the 4800 level and the 3600 level. All water below the 3600 level to the shaft bottom is controlled from the 4800 pumping station. The water from the 4800 pumping section is combined with water from the remaining levels of the No.2 Mine at the 3600 pumping station. Water from the 3600 pumping station is pumped to the 2400 pumping station in No. I Mine.The No. I Mine pumping stations are located on 2800, 2400, and 1200 levels. All water below the 2400 level to the shaft bottom is controlled through the 2800 pumping station. This water is pumped to the 2400 pumping station. The 2400 pumping station also controls the water below 1600level to 2400 level."

Work to improve employees' behavior in Głogów Copper Smelter began in 2009. It has been noted that over 90% of accidents at work are attributable to human reasons. At that time, a series of external workshops was contracted based on exercises conducted by a psychologist trainer with supervisors. Having trained about 300 employees, an observation of employee behavior at workstations was started as part of the control of risk reduction measures. As a result of the above actions, the number of accidents was reduced by half between 2009 and 2017. Currently, internal workshops for communication improvement for behavioral auditors are conducted by the employees of the Smelter. Named: "I observe, react and communicate" and aimed at further mastering the elements of the safety culture in Głogów Copper Smelter. INTRODUCTION KGHM Polska Miedz is an integrated mining and smelting copper producer based in Poland and operates on the international metal market. KGHM, with annual production of over 500 thousand tonnes of copper, holds a middle position in the world ranking of copper producers. At the same time, in Europe it is the largest producer of copper from its own ore deposits, possessing its own integrated production structure, from underground mining operations to final, top-quality product. It is also worth mentioning that KGHM Polska Miedź is one of the largest Polish exporters and, apart from copper, is a significant primary silver producer in the world. The mission of our company, consistent with its strategy, is to produce copper and silver in a safe mode for workers and the environment, with reduced environmental impact. Therefore, "Głogów" Copper Smelter operations are continuously focused on the creation of safe working conditions, and minimizing the negative effects on the environment. "Campbell mines has been in operation since 1948. Part of the process consists of roasting of a flotation concentrate which contains arsenopyrite.At present operation level the milling rate averages about 850 t.p.d. and about 48 t.p.d. of concentrate is roasted. The gas emissions at present contain between 3 and 3.5 t.p.d. of arsenic trioxide, about2 - 2.5 t.p.d. of particulate matter and between 19 - 25 t.p.d. of sulphur dioxide. The particulate is extremely fine calcine dust and it assays about 4 oz. Of gold per ton.Until 1974 the gas was discharged untreated through a 125' stack.UntreatedThe decision was made in 1972 to erect a gas treatment plant, construction ran through 1973 and operation began in 1974. The cost of the installation was about 1.3 million dollars.On investigation the process technology, it was apparent that the plant operated by giant Yellowknife for the same purpose was the model we should study. I would like to acknowledge the fine cooperation we had from giant, the plant that emerged is very similar to theirs and incorporates some improvements suggested by them and based on their operating experience.The plant is designed to remove arsenic and solid dust and it has no provisions to remove sulphur dioxide.We depend upon the 125' stack to assure adequate dilution. Because of the nearby airport the stack cannot exceed 125'. A stack burner is provided that can ""y used to heat the stack gas and carry it higher into the atmosphere when there is an inversion condition.The removal of arsenic from hot gas is fairly simple. The sublimation point is about 425°f, a few degrees above this point the arsenic is a gas and a few degrees below it condenses into a solid form. The arsenic could have been removed by simply dropping the temperature below the condensation point and collecting all the solids in a baghouse. This would have removed the possibility of recovering the gold in the calcine dust and would have produced an impure and more bulky arsenic material to be placed in safe storage. The decision was made to collect the solid dust in a hot electrostatic precipitator operating above the sublimation point and subsequently lower the temperature below the condensation point and collect the arsenic in a baghouse."

Ni and samaria-doped ceria (Ni-SDC) cermet are desirable materials for making a solid oxide fuel cell anode working at intermediate temperature (800°C or lower) due to its good ionic/electronic conductivity at the reduced operating temperature. An advantage of the use of a Ni-SDC anode is the enlargement of the effective reaction zone in the interfacial area between the anode and the electrolyte. As a result of the mixed ionic/electronic conductivity of the anode, the electrode reaction rate is enhanced. Investigations into the properties of the ceria-based anode reveal that the performance of the anode is closely related to its microstructures, which are dependent on the composition and fabrication conditions of the ceramics. In this paper, a method for quantitative characterization and correlation of Ni-SDC cermet microstructures to the performance of an anode is investigated. A series of Ni-SDC anode samples are prepared by screen-printing (SP) and spin-coating (SC) techniques, and different microstructures of the samples are obtained through controlling the SP or SC conditions and the sintering temperature. Individual phases (Ni, SDC and pore) in the tri-phase boundary (TPB) microstructures in the electrode are differentiated and segmented from each other in optical and SEM images based on the differences in refractivity and atomic contrasts among the phases. The geometric properties of the segmented phases are characterized using image analysis methods, so that a quantitative skeleton illustrating the TPB microstructures of the Ni-SDC electrode is obtained. Statistical analysis of the distribution of the three phases in the TPB microstructures is performed and the relationship of the microstructures with the optimum electrode is interpreted in terms of the microstructure analysis data.

"This presentation will cover some crushing and grinding considerations in plant design and operation. There is nothing basically new in the subject matter presented here; however, the viewpoint and interpretation may be novel and some of it controversial.The presentation is based on experience gained in the metallurgical design of plants for Placer Development Limited from 1960 to the present. The plants are listed on SLIDE No. 1.These plants have conventional crushing, followed by rod mill and ball mill grinding. I would like to think that autogenous grinding plants are the answer for eliminating secondary crushing plants and reducing the capital and operating costs; however, the autogenous plants seem to have some problems of their own and I have had no experience with them.Fineness of Grinding RequiredFirst let us consider the fineness of grinding required.The fineness of grind will affect the recovery obtained, and the relationship must be determined. If the grinding is too coarse, some of the valuable mineral, either free or locked in middling grains, will not be floated. However, as grinding is probably the greatest single operating cost, we do not want to grind any finer than is justified economically.Finer grinding should not be carried beyond the point where the net smelter return for the increment saved becomes less than the added operating cost. Even this fineness will be beyond the economic limit because of the additional capital cost for the equipment needed to achieve it. These factors will be discussed in more detail later.The Bond work index is the commonest method of expressing a measure of the effort that has to be expended in grinding. It is the kilowatt-hours required to reduce a ton of rock from an infinite size to 80% passing 100 microns. The formula allows a calculation to be made for other size ranges."

"IntroductionThis paper describes how the introduction of two blasting techniques and the resuItant development of new dragline digging methods have increased the productivity of single- and double-seam dragline operations at the Rietspruit opencast mine.LocationRietspruit , one of South Africa's largest opencast strip mines, is situated some 11 5 kilometres east of Johannesburg in the Witbank coal field.BusinessRietspruit is a joint venture between Transvaal Consolidate d Land and Exploration Company (T.C.L.) and Shell, South Africa. Rietspruit is administered and managed by Rand Mines, the Mining division of Barlow Rand, transportation and marketing being the responsibility of Shell. The total saleable coal product, approximately 5,5 million tons per annum, is exported via Richards Bay.Presplitting and Throw BlastingPresplitting was initially introduced in September 1980, as a means of dewatering t he overburden and mid burden to facilitate the use of dry-mix explosives a s opposed to slurry explosives.The utilization of the throw blasting technique arose as a direct result of observed ground movement after the successful introduction of presplitting. The first trials commenced in March 1981 on the double-seam operation. The methods, economics and resulting advantages are fully described elsewhere. A brief description follows.Method of PresplittingAfter determining the desired presplit line, 250-mm holes are drilled to top of coal at 4-m to 6-m intervals, dependent on the competency of the rock overlying the coal. A single 60-kg charge of slurry explosives is located at the bottom of each hole, no tamping is used and all the holes are detonated simultaneously. The results are a competent, straight, vertical highwall. This enables accurate control of the first row of blast holes closest to the highwall, which is a prime requisite for successful throw blasting."

"The advantages and disadvantages of a mobile crushing plant with a belt conveyor system compared to a stationary crushing plant with haulage by heavy trucks are described. The capital expenditure and operational expenses are compared and the individual cost factors are explained.Every open-pit mine or quarry, however, is different and has to be assessed and analyzed individually in order to find the optimum and most economical solution. Due to the high truck haulage costs, many open-pit mines tend to the more economical solution with mobile crushing plants and continuous belt conveyor operation. IntroductionFor the material haulage within an open-pit mine the heavy truck is the most flexible means of transportation. However, due to the high fuel consumption, wear and labour costs, it is also the most expensive one. Therefore, many open-pit mines are looking for alternative solutions for the material transport A mobile belt conveyor system is most likely to meet the requirements because it is efficient and economical with regard to the power consumption. The material , however, has to be crushed at the mining face to lumps which are suitable for conveyor operation. For this purpose a mobile crushing plant is required.In some open-pit mines the crusher is also used to crush the material to lumps of smaller particle sizes in order to save crushing costs in the preparation plant.Although a cost comparison between a system with stationary crusher and truck haulage and a system with mobile crusher and belt conveyors favours in most cases the belt conveyor system, up till now only a few open-pit mines and quarries benefit world-wide from the advantages of the mobile crushing plant with continuous belt conveyor operation."

"This paper briefly describes the underground crushing and conveying system at Sherritt Gordon Mines' Ruttan Mine. A series of three steel-cord belted conveyors, with a total length of 2J55 metres and a total vertical lift of 407 metres, convey the muck from the underground crushing station to the mill at the surface. The maximum size of the crushed rock is 6 in. All the conveyors are provided with numerous safety and fire suppression devices. IntroductionThe Ruttan Mine of Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited is located 20 km east of the town of Leaf Rapids, 760 km north of Winnipeg. The orebody is multilensed, with lens width varying from 6 to 45 m. Ore production started in 1973 with the opening of a 10,000-tpd open-pit mine. Initial development of the underground mine was started in 1972 with the driving of parallel conveyor and access declines at minus-2507o gradient to the I 220-m level, and then the access ramp was further extended to the 1160-m level. Exploration drifting was done on the 1280-m and 1160-m levels from the access ramp. The final development plan for the underground project was approved in January 1977, and full-scale development and constructionwere resumed.At present, Ruttan Mine is in a period of transition from open-pit to underground mining. Ore production is now coming from both operations. By mid-1980, open-pit production will cease and all production will come from the undergroundmine.The underground mining method at the Ruttan Mine is sublevel open stoping with delayed backfilling. The orebody is divided along strike into a series of 27-m-long stopes and 15-m pillars, both 60 m high."

"This paper describes a study carried out to determine the behaviour of Cu-Ni mill tailings during natural and flocculated sedimentations. Settling rates were examined under various conditions through standard laboratory batch settling tests. Flocculation was found to improve the sedimentation process significantly, but its effectiveness depended on several factors such as the pulp density of feed, the type and dosage of flocculating reagent, the pH of pulp, the intensity of mixing flocculant with tailings sand the use of stirring during compaction.It is shown that. for a sedimentation process taking place under given conditions, underflow pulp density (P) and sedimentation time (t) are related by the expression P = k.tn, where k and n are constants. A procedure is described for the use of this expression in thickener size estimations. IntroductionOften a considerable proportion of the mill feed is disposed as tailing, because the valuable mineral recovered usually forms a small fraction of the ore. Moreover, wet concentration processes result in liquid wastes that are several times more voluminous than the ore itself. Thus the handling and disposal of these wastes become an important cost item in most milling operations. The principal unit process employed in tailing disposal is solid-liquid separation which is traditionally carried out by gravity sedimentation in thickeners or tailing dams. Direct disposal of tailings into tailing dams is common practice where sufficiently large areas of land are available but it frequently becomes more economical or practical to densify the tailings in a thickener beforehand.Successful thickener operation depends essentially on correct thickener size which is in turn governed by the sedimentation characteristics of the tailings handled. Flocculation can aid the sedimentation process and bring about significant savings in thickener size, but its effective use requires a detailed study to identify the optimum conditions of application."

"Cominco's Polaris Mine is an underground lead/zinc operation located on Little Cornwallis Island in the Canadian High Arctic. Polaris is the world's most northerly base metal mine, situated at about latitude 75°N and longitude 97°W (Fig. 1). The closest community is Resolute Bay about 100 km to the southeast.During the construction and development phase Cominco adopted a unique scheme to save time and money. Many facilities including concentrator, powerhouse, shops and warehouse were built on a barge in southern Canada. The barge was towed 4800 km to the site in August 1981. Production at Polaris began in November 1981. The current mining rate is 1 million tonnes per year. The mine employs 250 people with about 190 on site at any time.GeologyThe deposit is a Mississippi Valley type orebody and lies near the top of the Ordovician Thumb Mountain Formation. Ore minerals consist of sphalerite and galena with the gangue being predominantly dolomite with calcite and marcasite. The orebody is situated completely within permafrost, consequently the voids frequently found in the ore are filled with ice. The orebody strikes north-south, dips approximately twenty degrees to the east and takes up an area about 400 m wide by 700 m long. The upper portion of the orebody (60 m to 150 m below surface) lies in an area called the Panhandle Zone. The deeper portion of the orebody known as the Keel Zone extends to 300 m below surface (Fig. 2). The deposit is strongly zoned with a high grade zinc/lead and iron-rich tabular core overlain and underlain by vein, stringer and breccia mineralization. The ore reserves at January 1991 were 14.6 million tonnes at 3.6% Pb, 13.7% Zn, 3.2% Fe, after producing 8 million tonnes at 3.9% Pb and 14.2% Zn since November 1981"
