In order to recover minerals by flotation, the sub-processes of collector adsorption onto the valuable minerals followed by bubble-particle attachment should occur efficiently. This paper investigates both of these sub-processes for various thiol collectors and their mixtures onto base metal sulfide minerals. The aim of the work was to investigate whether there is a correlation between the strength of the collector interaction with the mineral and the subsequent bubble-particle attachment. The collector-mineral affinity was measured experimentally using an isothermal titration calorimeter in order to determine the molar enthalpy of adsorption for each collector-mineral system. The bubble-particle attachment was measured using a microflotation device which essentially determines the hydrophobicity of the mineral. Sodium ethyl xanthate (SEX) and sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate (DTC) and mixtures thereof were used as collectors with either single minerals or binary mixtures of pyrite and chalcopyrite, respectively. The adsorption enthalpies of the collectors were interpreted with reference to the chemical structure of the collector molecule and showed that the greater the positive inductive effect of the collector, which may be qualitatively related to their pKa, the greater their affinity for the mineral surface. In the microflotation studies, recoveries were strongly related to the alkyl chain length but there was no correlation between the enthalpies of adsorption and the flotation recoveries. When mixtures of collectors were used there was clear evidence of synergistic effects and in the case of DTC/xanthate mixtures it is possible that this synergism is related to a DTC promoted oxidation of xanthate to dixanthogen. When mixtures of pyrite and chalcopyrite were used the flotation recovery and enthalpy of adsorption of SEX onto the individual pyrite particles in the mixture increased substantially compared to the case of pyrite alone. Mechanisms are proposed to interpret these important observations.

"The production of salable Rare Earth Element (REE) products necessitates a sequence of chemical separation steps between the mine and market commodities. The effectiveness of the chemical separations that purify REE salts is critical to the success of the producer, as the purity of REE salt products affects their market price. This is due to the fact that impurities in REE salts, even at low levels, can be deleterious to the function and usability of the end product. The purification of REE by removal of low levels of contaminant has been referred to as "product polishing". The technologies commonly in use for product polishing, solvent extraction (SX) and ion exchange (IEX) are challenged by the availability of separation chemistries to separate the contaminant from the desired REE salt. In simple terms, if a product specification is 99.9% purity, the SX or IEX separation reagents need to have at least a 999:1 selectivity ratio. Significant testing has been carried out on the use of solid phase extraction (SPE) columns to extract low-level impurities such as aluminum or zinc from REE product streams. The SPE columns are nano-composite materials that have rapid equilibration kinetics with the solutes being processed by the columns. The SPE matrices have been modified with chelating ion exchange ligands that bind the contaminating ion with great selectivity in residence times of a few seconds. Thus, REE streams with 1 to 2% of contaminating aluminum ions, have been polished to >99.99% purity. In this paper, results are presented on the removal of aluminum impurity from a didymium (neodymium+praseodymium) product stream using SPE technology. The selection of the SPE medium and the process steps to treat the feed solution for aluminum removal and ultimate stripping and recycle of the solid phase extractant are discussed."

"Data from two industrial plants are treated by mass balance package BILMAT. The first application concerned a base metals/precious metals (PM) producer and the second, implementation of a hydrocyclone for the recovery of iron chips in the granite industry. Also LOTUS 123 software can easily be adapted for laboratory test mass balances using an IBM-PC computer. INTRODUCTIONThe present paper deals with two different BILMAT program applications. The first application concerns a copper-zinc-gol d-sil Yer producer based in North-western Quebec and the second, concerns the iriplementation of a hydrocyclone for the recovery of iron chips in Quebec granite company.Afterwards, we deal with some LOTUS 123 software applications for laboratory test mass balances using an IBM-PC.1. Base metal and P.M. producerNoranda Inc, Mattagami division, which operates mines in North Western Quebec, produces copper and zinc concentrates from a sulphide ore. Small amounts of gold (0,34 g/t) and silver (20 g/tl are present. At the time of the study, only 30% of the silver content was recovered in the copper concentrate. The main objective of this study is, to evaluate the metallurgical behaviour of silver in the flotation circuits, to increase its recovery in the copper concentrate and therefore to improve its final economic value. It is then worthwhile to identify the silver bearing minerals and to determine the critical flotation stages where they are lost. The methodology proposed is based on the coupling of a mineralogical study and a detailed mass balance ca1cu1ation in the flotation circuit performed using the BILMAT mass balance package (1, 2, 3).The results are discussed with respect to the distribution of silver in the circuit. The recoveries obtained at the various separation stages for the minerals present in the ore are also discussed."

PT Smelting has operated the Mitsubishi Process in which feed materials are charged into the S- furnace through top lances using a pneumatic conveying system comprising 6 feeding tanks (S-Feeding Tanks). Each S-Feeding Tank was designed as a batch machine and had been operated in a batch mode so that feed materials are conveyed 70% of the operating time (conveying time). An S-Feeding Tank was revamped in August 2016 in order to attempt to achieve 100% conveying time during operation, aiming to reduce the furnace draft fluctuations and melt temperature fluctuations leading to reduced copper losses to slag and refractory wear on the sidewall in the melt zone. After two-year operation with some adjustments and modifications, it was concluded that the new system works as expected. During scheduled major shutdown in November 2018, the same modification was applied to all other 5 feeding tanks as the first one, while several modifications other than the S-Feeding system were also conducted for the purpose of expanding the capacity of the smelter. INTRODUCTION PT. Smelting (PTS) Gresik Copper Smelter and Refinery is located 30 kilometers north of the city of Surabaya, East Java major port. PT Smelting equity partners are Mitsubishi Materials with 60.5%, PT. Freeport Indonesia with 25%, Mitsubishi Corporation RtM Japan Ltd. with 9.5% and JX Nippon Mining and Metals corporation with 5.0%. PTS was established in February 1996 and started commercial operation of the Mitsubishi Process in 1999. The Mitsubishi Process is a unique technology which connects 3 stationary furnaces, namely the Smelting furnace (S-furnace), Slag-Cleaning furnace (CL-furnace) and Converting furnace (C-furnace) by covered launders. These features result in savings in manpower and energy, and make the process more environmentally friendly since there is no ladle transfer of melt. Figure 1 illustrates the outline of the Mitsubishi Process.

"As demands upon the earth's natural resources continue to grow, exploration companies, mining organizations and others face the problem of the need to tackle increasingly more difficult strata to open up new reserves. Innovations in materials technology and tool design have steadily improved this capability, but none perhaps so drastically as a recently introduced cemented carbide in which tool wear resistance and/or toughness can be tailored precisely to the user's drilling needs.Introduction Until about forty years ago, the bulk of rock-drilling operations had to be carried out with hardened steels. Short life between re-grinds was common especially in abrasive rock formations. Shortly after World War II, Sandvik, Sweden, pioneered the development of sintered (cemented) carbide-tipped steel tools as a means of improving drill tool life. The new material was a composite of tungsten carbide and cobalt, the latter acting as a 'cement' to bind the wear-resistant carbide grains together, and the composite, in turn, was brazed to the steel. The immediate effect was a 100-fold increase in the service life of the tool.Intractable ProblemsWhile the carbide-tipped tools served the mining and quarrying industries admirably there were, nonetheless, some seemingly intractable limitations. The greater the wear resistance of the material - the quality for which it is selected - the more brittle it is. Also, rocks vary widely in hardness and abrasiveness and no single tool, either in terms of material or shape, meets every need. Specifically, for fast penetration of non-abrasive rock, toughness must be combined with a relatively sharp tool prome. Highly abrasive rock, on the other hand, demands a substantially broad area of extremely wear-resistant material on the tool if long bit life is to be assured. "Filter cloth in the mining industry is an ambiguous title asthis suggests filter cloth use from underground ventilation to the refining processes. The time allowed for this paper would be better served in con-centrating on vacuum filters common to all mine mills and to offer some simple guide lines to the mill metallurgists in the choice of filter cloth for this type of filter.The requirement of the filter cloth is to separate solids from liquids under a vacuum head by forming a permeable layer of solids or cake, through which liquids can flow until the panel or disc sector leave the slurry tank and to continue to pass residual moisture from the cake formed during the cake drying cycle, and to discharge the cake on air-blow so that the cycle can be repeated.Whilst the mill metallurgist should not be expected to under¬stand all aspects of filter cloth manufacturer, it is however, advantageous for him to understand a little of the textile language associated with filter cloth for his own protection against ""trial-and-error"" methods, which are both time consuming and costly.If improvements are to be made over existing filter cloth in use an examination of the limiting factors of the cloth used should be made and the major causes for removal determined, e.g. cloth blinding, high moisture in cake, poor cake discharge on air blow, mechanical damage to cloth.As each of the limiting factors mentioned has a bearing on the choice of fibre used, the yarn type and weave of a suitable cloth, an under-standing of these points will assist the mill metallurgist in avoiding repetitive trials offering little degree of success."

"Carbon addition in the oxide pelletizing process is a big concern at the Sidbec-Normines pelletizing plant since 1976.Laboratory pot-grate testing carried out before the initial start-up of the Port-Cartier plant indicated that the nominal pelletizing grate capacity could be increased by fifteen per cent with a suitable carbon addition. Also an improved induration cycle offered the possibility of a significant energy reduction within the process with no adverse effect on pellet quality. A one-month plant scale program duplicated the lab test results and confirmed the anticipated cost saving by using these techniques. Since March 1980, Sidbec-Normines used coke addition as a current operation.This paper reviews briefly earlier laboratory and in-plant test work carried out to investigate the effects of adding carbon materials to the Fire Lake hematite concentrate, and presents operation techniques and plant results of carbon addition in the Port -Cattier pellet plant.IntroductionThe Sidbec-Normines pelletizing plant at Port-Cartier, Quebec, is designed to produce six million ton s per year of oxide pellet s. "This paper focusses on what seem to be the leading indicators of prosperity in the minerals industry during this decade: the geographical distribution of deposits, environmental impact, capital allocation and acid consumption. There is a potential for meeting environmental criteria at a reasonable profit margin, but those with limited acid demand within economic range will face hard times to meet growing environmental concerns, resulting in additional mine closures. At the other end, those with old waste dumps who are thinking about smelting capacity additions will need capital influx at a much larger rate than ever before. All things considered, a change should be made in the way the world's copper reserves are computed, because there is a growing need to internalize these effects back to the ore blocks before a meaningful estimate of reserves becomes available.IntroductionThe copper industry has undergone several changes during the past decade, many of which were expected to take place because they rel1ect the economics of ageing mines. However, many others took place that shocked the industry because they were not completely under control. "High total and dissolved uranium values were noted in the process water at the Cigar Lake Operation (CLO) during early production start-up period, whereas significant levels of dissolved uranium had not been observed previously at similar operations. The excess dissolved uranium resulted in higher demands on the water treatment plant, along with higher operating costs, environmental risks and some unrealized revenue potential. A species balance indicated that uranium was leaching into solution in the grinding, dewatering, and storage circuits under normal operating conditions. Jet boring, water recycle, ball milling, and the use of Pachuca tanks for ore storage results in a highly oxidative environment, which is favourable to leaching.This paper will outline the testwork performed to identify the conditions under which the uranium leaches into solution and to determine required conditions for uranium precipitation. Maximum uranium leaching was found to occur under normal operating conditions (pH ranging from 7.0 to 8.5); testwork indicated that both lowering and raising the pH can significantly reduce the uranium leaching. Analytical results combined with the batch scale testwork indicate that the uranium solubility is associated with carbonate species in the ore. Uranium precipitation was maximized at pH values greater than 10.5 or less than 6, corresponding well to carbonate leaching and precipitation values from literature. Higher precipitation efficiencies were noted at high pH ranges.As a result of this work, a pH control system has been implemented in the Pachuca storage vessels and thickener prior to water treatment plant on a trial basis. Caustic soda is recommended for pH control due to ease of operation, economic viability and material requirements and downstream constraints."

"The fire resistance of several mine conveyor belts is evaluated using a new belt-flammability apparatus developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The test apparatus, experimental details and a calculated flammability index (FI) are described.The FI values are useful for ranking the fir e resistance of mine conveyor belts. Values are determined using parameters readily measured with thermocouples, high-temperature flow probes and a methane-oxygen torch, all of which are components of the Bureau's new test apparatus. The FI varies directly with the flame-spread rate and the rate of heat release during burning and varies inversely with the critical (minimum) ignitor energy output.The fire-resistance ranking of nine different belt types using this moderately scaled apparatus is compared with available full-scale data on belt fires. This comparison shows that the ranking based on the FI is consistent with the full-scale data.IntroductionFull-scale fire hazard evaluations of mine conveyor belts are not easily related to the properties usually measured in small-scale flammability tests. The inadequacy of small-scale belt fire tests has been demonstrated in works by Mitchell, Warner and Reinke.Mitchell and Warner showed that certain neoprene (NP) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) belts, which had been approved by the Code of Federal Regulations 30 CFR 18.65, were nevertheless capable of propagating flame over their entire length when full-scale fire conditions were simulated. Comparable results were also observed by Reinke at the Tremonia experimental mine in Dortmund, West Germany, where all belts burned in full-scale tests even though they passed the small-scale tests. Only by reducing the severity of the full-scale test could these fire-resistant belts be grouped on a pass-fail basis."

Computers can be applied for both on-line and off-line purposes; this paper focuses on the on-line applications from the process control point of view.A critical discussion of the different analog and digital process control systems is presented. Recent developments in Great Britain, West Germany, Poland and Australia on automation and instrumentation using on-line measurements of coal ash and moisture contents are identified.The CRL research and development strategy aimed at achieving on-line computer control of an automated coal preparation plant is presented.IntroductionIn the past twenty years an enormous progress in the area of computer technology has been noticed. Computer applications in industrial processes offer greater system flexibility, improved plant performance efficiency and efficient utilization of manpower. Significant computer control development in mineral processing has already been achieved. Although progress has been made in the area of computer applications in coal preparation, more effort is needed to utilize the full potential.The computer applications in coal preparation can be viewed as off-line and on-line. Considerable progress has been reported in the area of off-line computer applications, especially in the areas of modelling, performance evaluation/prediction and statistical analysis. However, only modest progress in on-line applications has been reported(1-7). "The decision to invest capital in developing a mine and constructing a mineral processing plant and services is usually made after a feasibility study shows 'that the estimated future cash flow from mine operations will yield an adequate return on the estimated capital expenditures.The actual return on investment may differ substantially from that estimated in the feasibility study, because of the probabilities of errors in estimating capital costs, ore reserves, operating costs, mineral revenue and operating productivity. This paper outlines the R.S.S. (root sum of squares) risk analysis procedure of computing the overall probability of the actual project D.C.F. (rate of discounted cash flow), differing from that estimated in the feasibility study.Variation in Project D.C.F.It is assumed that a feasibility study of the project has been completed which has defined the estimated values for all the project parameters, such as ore reserve tons and grade, capital cost, concentrate recovery, metal revenue, daily milling capacity and operating costs.The financial analysis of the mining project will have determined that the cumulative cash flow will yield an expected D.C.F. on the capital cost if all project parameters attain the estimated values. If, however, the actual value of any parameter varies from that estimated, the actual project D.C.F. will vary from the estimated D.C.F. Risk analysis methods attempt to determine the overall effect of probable variations in the estimated values of all project parameters on the D.C.F. of the mining project. This overall effect is expressed as a probability profile, which shows the likelihood of actual D.C.F. values greater or less than that estimated.Thus, a completed risk analysis of a mine project, with an expected D.C.F. of 15.51%, would display the characteristics shown in the preceding diagram."

"Spring-Back/Forward in sheet metals is defined as recovery of elastic strain upon unloading in a deformed sheet specimen. Since this phenomenon can cause alternation in the dimensions of a part, leading to irrecoverable compensations, the operative parameters need to be investigated, thoroughly. To assess spring-forward and effective bending parameters, V-shaped bending dies are the most commonly used experimental approach. In the present research, the effect of bending angle and punch tip radius on the spring-forward behavior of an Al-Mg-Si alloy sheet specimen is studied. To this end, a V-shaped die with four bending angles (i.e. 30°, 45°, 60°, and 90°) was designed and fabricated. Specimens with thickness of 2 mm were cut with dimensions of 50 mm×10 mm. Results show that by increasing the bending angle, the spring-forward angle decreases. In addition, smaller punch tip radiuses lead to further spring-forward. The effect of these parameters on the amount of spring-forward angle, strain distribution and homogeneity along sheet thickness was assessed using finite element analysis (FEA). Simulation results show that as the bending angle increases, the strain is developed more homogenously. Finally, micro-hardness test was used to study the effect of strain hardening caused by bending operation on strength evolution. Results show higher hardness trends for the zones in which the maximum plastic strain occurs.INTRODUCTIONPrecise production plays a significant role in the durability of a part. When it comes to sheet metal forming, this issue should be taken into account as an important factor. In order to predict the alternations, bending dies with special geometric parameters (i.e. V-shaped, U-shaped and L-shaped dies) are commonly used (Wagoner, Lim, & Lee, 2013)."

Manganese nodules form at the sediment surface of abyssal plains throughout the global ocean at water depths of about 4000-6500 m. The nodules form a continuum from purely hydrogenetic (all metals from seawater) to purely diagenetic (all metals from sediment pore waters), which will determine which metals of potential economic interest are enriched in the nodules. Another important factor in metal enrichment is whether diagenesis in the bottom sediment is oxic or suboxic. There are several nodule fields in the deep ocean that have received much attention with regards to economic potential, the most important being the Clarion-Clipperton zone (CCZ) in the NE Pacific, where the International Seabed Authority (ISA) has signed 12 contracts for exploration areas, each spanning 75,000 square kilometers. Those nodules are rich in nickel (mean 1.3 wt. %), copper (mean 1.1 %), and manganese (28%), with moderate amounts of cobalt (mean 0.2%), molybdenum (587 g/t), and lithium (129 g/t). A conservative estimate is that there exists 21,100 million dry tonnes of nodules in the CCZ, yielding more manganese, twice the nickel, three times the cobalt, and four times the yttrium than the entire land-based reserve base (economic plus marginally economic plus subeconomic reserves) for each metal. Total rare-earth elements (REEs) as oxides average 0.09% in CCZ nodules, a potential byproduct even at that grade because the heavy REE complement averages 26%, compared to less than 1% for the large land-based carbonatite REE deposits. The price for HREEs is much greater than for the light REEs. For comparison, the REEs in deep-ocean ferromanganese crusts are 3 to 5 times greater than nodules and the HREE complement averages 18%. Of the 12 CCZ contracts, 7 are with States (China, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Russia, and a group of States (IOM); and 5 are with companies: G-Tec Sea Mineral Resources NV, Nauru Ocean Resources Inc. (NORI); Tonga Offshore Mining Ltd (TOML), UK Seabed Resources Ltd (Lockheed UK), and Marawa Research and Exploration Ltd. Three other nodule fields that have received attention are in the Peru Basin, which has nodules very rich in manganese (34%) and lithium (mean 311 g/t), the Penrhyn Basin (Cook Islands Exclusive Economic Zone), with nodules very rich in cobalt (mean 0.4%); and the Central Indian Ocean Basin (CIOB), where India has an exploration contract with the ISA. CIPB nodules have mean nickel, copper, and manganese contents of 1.1%, 1.0%, and 24% respectively.

"Two continuous coal zones occurring in a 2500f t (762 m) thick section of the Upper Carboniferous Pictou Group (Westphalian C and D) have been encountered in five offshore wells drilled f or oil and gas in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. They correlate, by means of fossil spores, with thick coals of the Mabou and Inverness coalfields situated at the eastern margin of the Basin. Therefore, the presence of a large submarine coalfield of at least 18000 sq mi. (46 620 km'] is indicated. This compares with an estimated size of 14 000 sq mi. (36260 km' ) for the Sydney Coal Basin.Accessibility is provided only by the small onshore parts of the Mabou and Inverness fields, because farther offshore the coals lie too deep to be mined (below 4 OOO f t ([ 219 m)).Two near-shore coal exploration wells indicate that at Mabou Mines the younger Inverness coals occur at a mineable depth to at least 5 km from land. A structure contour map of this area shows a reserve of 125 million tons in two Inverness equivalent seams that are 8.5 ft (2.6 m) and 4.5 ft (f.4 m) thick. The Mabou coals, however, reach too great a depth close to shore to possess mineable resources.A structure contour map of the Inverness submarine area, based on mine data and one off shore seismic profile, indicates inferred mineable resources of 160 million tons, in two seams that are 7ft (2.1 m) and 4.5 ft (f.4 m) thick . Uncertainty quantification is a means of articulating the reliability of model estimations. Models of copper pyrometallurgical processes have been published for decades but discussion of their reliability has typically been terse and qualitative, mitigating understanding of their exact applicability to industrial situations. This presentation shows basic uncertainty propagation and Bayesian model calibration, two powerful uncertainty quantification tools, applied to a reduced order model of copper fire/anode refining. The implications of the uncertainty quantification analyses on the applicability of the model results to industrial practice are then discussed. Finally, other possible applications of uncertainty quantification to copper extractive metallurgy are explored. INTRODUCTION Modern copper production operations, including mining operations through wire drawing factories, are ubiquitously heavily instrumented. Most mine-sites and smelters have large repositories of historical data. That said, much of this data is not exploited to its maximum effect. This proceeding provides examples of using uncertainty quantification (UQ) to maximize the informational yield of the data collected from a fire-refining operation. Anode/Fire Refining is the final pyrometallurgical step in the production of copper anodes; it is an essential and universally employed processing step at smelters (Schlesinger, King, Sole, & Davenport, 2011). Much like the smelting and converting furnaces further up the process stream, anode furnaces are difficult to instrument due to their high temperature and the corrosive and/or caking quality of their offgas. This makes continuous and accurate measurement of the streams leaving the unit operation, e.g. liquid copper, slag, and offgas very difficult. As an example, offgas flowmeters, while providing continuous draft values, could miss the actual draft value by tens of percent due to caking or corrosion. UQ methods account for the uncertainty in process measurements and parameter values; they use a process model with measurements of performance indices to provide better and better estimations of process performance. This proceeding will first introduce a surrogate model for copper fire refining, made from a 1D, transient, reacting flow model of the process presented elsewhere in these proceedings (Mather & Krane, 2019). Discussion of the data used to make the surrogate model, as well as the creation of the surrogate model, will be included. Then, a Monte Carlo simulation will be performed, showing the expected soot production rate based on the surrogate model and assumptions about the uncertainty in the model’s parameters. Finally, the surrogate model parameters will be calibrated in a Bayesian way; this will tell what the actual uncertainty in the parameters are, given a set of observed industrial data and prior assumptions of the observations’ and parameters’ uncertainty.

"There is a world-wide trend toward underground bulk mining methods employing hydraulically placed backfill. This trend is recent and therefore there is little in the literature to assist an operator in the design of backfill properties, the design of drainage facilities, the calculation of the operating forces on a bulkhead, and the control procedures considered necessary before, during and after pouring. This paper presents recommended procedures that are based on over to years of experience in the various aspects of backfilling large openings. Free-draining timber or concrete block bulkheads are shown to be a viable alternative to massive reinforced concrete bulkheads for the containment of backfill pours. Hydrostatic pressures cannot develop in backfills provided adquate drainage facilities are installed.IntroductionThe increasingly adverse relationship between mining costs and mineral values has led mining companies to develop more productive, lower-cost, bulk mining methods. This has led to the increasing use of large, more or less continuous, hydraulically placed backfill pours to enable the recovery of a higher proportion of pillar ore. The success of any bulk mining method depends on the degree of stability maintained during the stoping operations with reference to the mining rate, the performance of the backfill with respect to the per cent extraction of pillar ore, and the control of the mine structure with respect to safety and productivity. One such method has been previously described(I) where a steeply dipping orebody is being mined with a sub-level method that employs large, hydraulically placed tailings pours for delayed pillar recovery. The paper describes the rock mechanics analysis undertaken to establish the stope and pillar geometry and the approach taken to establish backfill strength requirements to prevent dilution during pillar recovery. Production with this method started in 1970 and because few, if any, large bulk pours had previously been used in- this way (judging by the lack of information in the literature), design data and criteria were needed for several aspects of the work. Methods to establish backfill quantities and pertinent ""in-place"" fill properties are described in 2, 3 and 4 in the list of references. Results of field measurements taken to establish fill pressures for bulkhead design purposes are described in 5 and 6. Laboratory large-scale model tests undertaken to confirm a fill strength design equation, which takes into account fill arching, have recently been completed. A paper describing these tests and the results will be forthcoming in the near future."

"The Giant claims are on the west side of Yellowknife bay about 1 ½ miles north of the settlement of Yellowknife. They were staked in 1935 by prospectors in the employ of Burwash Yellowknife Gold Mines, Limited, and were transferred to Giant Yellowknife Gold Mines, Limited, in 1937, on the incorporation of that Company. During the period 1936 to 1940 a number of surface discoveries were investigated by trenching, test pitting, and diamond drilling. A shallow inclined shaft was sunk on the Brock zone, a system of narrow and irregular quartz veins, and some 75 tons of high-grade ore was mined and shipped to the Trail smelter. In 1943 management control was acquired by Frobisher Exploration Company, Limited. An intensive campaign of diamond drilling was commenced in January 1944 and carried on continuously for 2 years. This drilling indicated the presence of substantial gold orebodies lying within well-developed shear zones. Two shafts, 1 ¼ miles apart, were sunk during 1946 and underground development started on two of the orebodies.The claims are underlain largely by rocks of the Yellowknife greenstone belt, which extends from the shore of Great Slave lake along the west side of Yell ow knife bay and northward . The most conspicuous structural features are the steeply dipping late faults. The chief of these is the West Bay, which bisects the greenstone belt at an acute angle and crosses the southern part of the Giant group. At the 'big bend' near the west boundary of the claims there is a remarkably sudden change in the strike of the fault, from about 12° N.W. to about 3° N.E. The apparent horizontal displacement along this fault is of the order of 3 miles, with the east side moved relatively north. There are also a large number of lesser faults with apparent horizontal displacements of a few feet up to l,70J feet for the Townsite fault. Most of these faults trend north to northwest. Surface examination indicates that, at least for most of them, the movement corresponds to that along the West Bay fault, that is, the east side moved relatively north. According to the available evidence, all or most•of the movem:nt along the West Bay fault and along the lesser faults was post-ore. Late diabase dyk:s that cut through ore-bearing shear zones, with chilled margins in contact with the mineralized material, are apparently displaced to the same extent as earlier geological markers.
