"The through-put and energy efficiency of an autogenous (AG) grinding mill are adversely affected by variability in rock size and rock competency. This applies to both fully autogenous and semi-autogenous (SAG) grinding circuits. In this paper we focus on an approach to overcome the problem of inconsistent mill through-put related to variability in mill feed size and rock competency. The focus is on ores containing hard, competent rock. This approach consists of preparing feed to an autogenous mill that contains 20% coarse media rock and 80% of material crushed to pass 37 mm. Results of pilot-scale testing for two iron-ores will be presented to show that a 10% to 12% reduction in unit energy consumption is possible with prepared feed, compared with feeding the mill with conventional primary crusher discharge.INTRODUCTIONIn the past 30 years or so, autogenous grinding and semi-autogenous grinding have been the comminution technologies of choice for most mining and mineral processing operations. These technologies saved both capital and operating expenses associated with the installation and operation of multi-stage crushing and screening plants required for conventional rod mill – ball mill circuits. However, SAG and AG are inherently inefficient in terms of energy consumption, especially for very hard ores. In cases of hard ore, changing characteristics of rock fed to the mills causes wide fluctuations in mill capacity, which contributes to the inefficiency. Rising electric power costs make this the most expensive unit operation used in the extraction of valuable minerals from an ore. The objective of the concept discussed here is to reduce the energy consumption in AG grinding for hard ore and eliminate the use of large-diameter steel grinding balls that are required for SAG grinding"

In the Waelz kiln process, EAF dust is converted to an Fe-rich slag, a (Zn, Fe)-rich dust that is recycled to the kiln and the Zn-rich Waelz oxide which is subsequently up-graded for the recovery of zinc. To clarify the reactions occurring, the Waelz kiln products from a European Waelz plant were characterized mineralogically to determine the mineral species present, their micro-textures and the metal carriers. The EAF dust contains 27 % Zn, and consists mainly of ZnFe2O4 and ZnO, together with minor to trace amounts of NaCl, PbCl2, KCl, CaO, Ca2Fe2O5, Fe203, FRO, Pb oxide and various Ca-Fe-Al-Mn silicates. The KCI and NaCI sometimes agglomerate the other particles. The slag consists of nodules which often exhibit colloform structures. The slag contains of variable amounts of Fe, FeO(OH), FeO, gypsum, Ca(OH)2, Ca2SiO4 and various Ca-Fe¬Al-Mg-Mn silicates as well as minor to trace amounts of ZnFe2O4, Cr-Fe oxide, Mn-Fe oxide and other species. The Waelz oxide contains 57-61 % Zn, and consists predominantly of ZnO, with minor to trace amounts of KCI NaCl, Pb(OH)Cl, Pb20(SO4), Pb chloride, ZnSO4, ZnFe2O4, Ca2SiO4, Ca2Fe2O5, Ca-Fe silicate and NaZn4(SO4)(OH)6Cl.6H2O. The KCI agglomerates the other particles in the Waelz oxide. The recycled dust appears to be a mixture of EAF dust and Waelz oxide, but it contains relatively more coarser-grained metallic Pb and Pb oxide particles.

"This is a prelirr1inary report on automatic control at East Malartic Gold Mines.After installation of the cyclones in the East Malartic grinding circuit, the interest was aroused in the automatic control system for the circuit. Investigations were made as to the possibilities of such an installation. This resulted in a preliminary survey of the circuit by Milltronics Ltd and an analysis of the circuit by Mines Branch personnel. A study of the investigation and analysis indicated that a cost reduction and improved efficiency could be expected by the installation of an automatic control system in the grinding circuit. It was also indicated tl1at such installation should pay for itself within a year. This was the point that sold management on such installation. The need of three operators was expected to be eliminated .The installation was to consist of a central control panel, microphoncs on each mill, regulation of feed rate, pneumatic valves for addition of solt1tions, density control of the cyclone overflow, which is a grinding circuit product, rod mill feed box plugging detector and a conveyer weightometer for tonnage indication and control.As well as the elimination of one man per sl1ift, other benefits which were to be received but unable to estimate were: 1) More tonnage per clay by operation of the mills at the proper capacities. 2) Lower grinding costs. Less under-loading should result in less steel wear and lower pumping cost. In the condition of overloading, a coarser grind is obtained resulting in greater impeller and liner wear. The overloading and underloading showed up on the n1icropl1oncs. 3) An improvement in the recovery as a result of less over-load. The tailings loss from a coarser grind are not as frequent."

Leaching of copper (Cu) concentrates produces elevated concentrations of Cu and acid, which makes solvent extraction (SX) processing more challenging. Maintaining extraction targets can be more difficult with higher pregnant leach solution (PLS) grades, and variability of PLS Cu and acid can lead to increased chemical iron transfer. Diluting concentrate leach feeds with an existing heap leach inventory makes SX processing easier. However, considerations about how much to dilute and where to distribute the flow into the SX configuration must be carefully evaluated, given their impact on metallurgical performance. In this paper, characteristics of a concentrate leach feed are discussed, along with considerations for processing by SX. Also reviewed are pilot plant results of concentrate leach distribution into SX and plans for commercial testing. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical processing of copper concentrates continues to gain interest from the industry. Treatment by smelting and electrorefining continues to dominate, accounting for ~80% of global copper production, but is faced with its own challenges (Li et al, 2017). The case for increased hydrometallurgical processing has been discussed as high grade ore deposits are diminishing, capital costs for smelting are high, and the environmental aspects present challenges for sustainable practice. The hydromet copper industry is also turning a corner as easily leachable copper oxide deposits are depleting, and excess SX-EW capacity exists in certain regions. The transition to hydrometallurgical processing of copper concentrates will take a bit of effort as leaching of copper sulfides is difficult and byproduct credits must be considered. Various POX leaching processes have been studied and proposed to the industry as viable practices. Of the many processes, commercial use has been practiced with the Mount Gordon Copper Process, total and partial pressure oxidation by Freeport-McMoRan at their Bagdad and Morenci, Arizona complexes, the Sepon Copper Process in Laos, and the bioleach BIOCOP™ process in Chile (Dreisinger, 2016).

In order to recover minerals by flotation, the sub-processes of collector adsorption onto the valuable minerals followed by bubble-particle attachment should occur efficiently. This paper investigates both of these sub-processes for various thiol collectors and their mixtures onto base metal sulfide minerals. The aim of the work was to investigate whether there is a correlation between the strength of the collector interaction with the mineral and the subsequent bubble-particle attachment. The collector-mineral affinity was measured experimentally using an isothermal titration calorimeter in order to determine the molar enthalpy of adsorption for each collector-mineral system. The bubble-particle attachment was measured using a microflotation device which essentially determines the hydrophobicity of the mineral. Sodium ethyl xanthate (SEX) and sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate (DTC) and mixtures thereof were used as collectors with either single minerals or binary mixtures of pyrite and chalcopyrite, respectively. The adsorption enthalpies of the collectors were interpreted with reference to the chemical structure of the collector molecule and showed that the greater the positive inductive effect of the collector, which may be qualitatively related to their pKa, the greater their affinity for the mineral surface. In the microflotation studies, recoveries were strongly related to the alkyl chain length but there was no correlation between the enthalpies of adsorption and the flotation recoveries. When mixtures of collectors were used there was clear evidence of synergistic effects and in the case of DTC/xanthate mixtures it is possible that this synergism is related to a DTC promoted oxidation of xanthate to dixanthogen. When mixtures of pyrite and chalcopyrite were used the flotation recovery and enthalpy of adsorption of SEX onto the individual pyrite particles in the mixture increased substantially compared to the case of pyrite alone. Mechanisms are proposed to interpret these important observations.

"The production of salable Rare Earth Element (REE) products necessitates a sequence of chemical separation steps between the mine and market commodities. The effectiveness of the chemical separations that purify REE salts is critical to the success of the producer, as the purity of REE salt products affects their market price. This is due to the fact that impurities in REE salts, even at low levels, can be deleterious to the function and usability of the end product. The purification of REE by removal of low levels of contaminant has been referred to as "product polishing". The technologies commonly in use for product polishing, solvent extraction (SX) and ion exchange (IEX) are challenged by the availability of separation chemistries to separate the contaminant from the desired REE salt. In simple terms, if a product specification is 99.9% purity, the SX or IEX separation reagents need to have at least a 999:1 selectivity ratio. Significant testing has been carried out on the use of solid phase extraction (SPE) columns to extract low-level impurities such as aluminum or zinc from REE product streams. The SPE columns are nano-composite materials that have rapid equilibration kinetics with the solutes being processed by the columns. The SPE matrices have been modified with chelating ion exchange ligands that bind the contaminating ion with great selectivity in residence times of a few seconds. Thus, REE streams with 1 to 2% of contaminating aluminum ions, have been polished to >99.99% purity. In this paper, results are presented on the removal of aluminum impurity from a didymium (neodymium+praseodymium) product stream using SPE technology. The selection of the SPE medium and the process steps to treat the feed solution for aluminum removal and ultimate stripping and recycle of the solid phase extractant are discussed."

"Data from two industrial plants are treated by mass balance package BILMAT. The first application concerned a base metals/precious metals (PM) producer and the second, implementation of a hydrocyclone for the recovery of iron chips in the granite industry. Also LOTUS 123 software can easily be adapted for laboratory test mass balances using an IBM-PC computer. INTRODUCTIONThe present paper deals with two different BILMAT program applications. The first application concerns a copper-zinc-gol d-sil Yer producer based in North-western Quebec and the second, concerns the iriplementation of a hydrocyclone for the recovery of iron chips in Quebec granite company.Afterwards, we deal with some LOTUS 123 software applications for laboratory test mass balances using an IBM-PC.1. Base metal and P.M. producerNoranda Inc, Mattagami division, which operates mines in North Western Quebec, produces copper and zinc concentrates from a sulphide ore. Small amounts of gold (0,34 g/t) and silver (20 g/tl are present. At the time of the study, only 30% of the silver content was recovered in the copper concentrate. The main objective of this study is, to evaluate the metallurgical behaviour of silver in the flotation circuits, to increase its recovery in the copper concentrate and therefore to improve its final economic value. It is then worthwhile to identify the silver bearing minerals and to determine the critical flotation stages where they are lost. The methodology proposed is based on the coupling of a mineralogical study and a detailed mass balance ca1cu1ation in the flotation circuit performed using the BILMAT mass balance package (1, 2, 3).The results are discussed with respect to the distribution of silver in the circuit. The recoveries obtained at the various separation stages for the minerals present in the ore are also discussed."

PT Smelting has operated the Mitsubishi Process in which feed materials are charged into the S- furnace through top lances using a pneumatic conveying system comprising 6 feeding tanks (S-Feeding Tanks). Each S-Feeding Tank was designed as a batch machine and had been operated in a batch mode so that feed materials are conveyed 70% of the operating time (conveying time). An S-Feeding Tank was revamped in August 2016 in order to attempt to achieve 100% conveying time during operation, aiming to reduce the furnace draft fluctuations and melt temperature fluctuations leading to reduced copper losses to slag and refractory wear on the sidewall in the melt zone. After two-year operation with some adjustments and modifications, it was concluded that the new system works as expected. During scheduled major shutdown in November 2018, the same modification was applied to all other 5 feeding tanks as the first one, while several modifications other than the S-Feeding system were also conducted for the purpose of expanding the capacity of the smelter. INTRODUCTION PT. Smelting (PTS) Gresik Copper Smelter and Refinery is located 30 kilometers north of the city of Surabaya, East Java major port. PT Smelting equity partners are Mitsubishi Materials with 60.5%, PT. Freeport Indonesia with 25%, Mitsubishi Corporation RtM Japan Ltd. with 9.5% and JX Nippon Mining and Metals corporation with 5.0%. PTS was established in February 1996 and started commercial operation of the Mitsubishi Process in 1999. The Mitsubishi Process is a unique technology which connects 3 stationary furnaces, namely the Smelting furnace (S-furnace), Slag-Cleaning furnace (CL-furnace) and Converting furnace (C-furnace) by covered launders. These features result in savings in manpower and energy, and make the process more environmentally friendly since there is no ladle transfer of melt. Figure 1 illustrates the outline of the Mitsubishi Process.

"As demands upon the earth's natural resources continue to grow, exploration companies, mining organizations and others face the problem of the need to tackle increasingly more difficult strata to open up new reserves. Innovations in materials technology and tool design have steadily improved this capability, but none perhaps so drastically as a recently introduced cemented carbide in which tool wear resistance and/or toughness can be tailored precisely to the user's drilling needs.Introduction Until about forty years ago, the bulk of rock-drilling operations had to be carried out with hardened steels. Short life between re-grinds was common especially in abrasive rock formations. Shortly after World War II, Sandvik, Sweden, pioneered the development of sintered (cemented) carbide-tipped steel tools as a means of improving drill tool life. The new material was a composite of tungsten carbide and cobalt, the latter acting as a 'cement' to bind the wear-resistant carbide grains together, and the composite, in turn, was brazed to the steel. The immediate effect was a 100-fold increase in the service life of the tool.Intractable ProblemsWhile the carbide-tipped tools served the mining and quarrying industries admirably there were, nonetheless, some seemingly intractable limitations. The greater the wear resistance of the material - the quality for which it is selected - the more brittle it is. Also, rocks vary widely in hardness and abrasiveness and no single tool, either in terms of material or shape, meets every need. Specifically, for fast penetration of non-abrasive rock, toughness must be combined with a relatively sharp tool prome. Highly abrasive rock, on the other hand, demands a substantially broad area of extremely wear-resistant material on the tool if long bit life is to be assured. "Filter cloth in the mining industry is an ambiguous title asthis suggests filter cloth use from underground ventilation to the refining processes. The time allowed for this paper would be better served in con-centrating on vacuum filters common to all mine mills and to offer some simple guide lines to the mill metallurgists in the choice of filter cloth for this type of filter.The requirement of the filter cloth is to separate solids from liquids under a vacuum head by forming a permeable layer of solids or cake, through which liquids can flow until the panel or disc sector leave the slurry tank and to continue to pass residual moisture from the cake formed during the cake drying cycle, and to discharge the cake on air-blow so that the cycle can be repeated.Whilst the mill metallurgist should not be expected to under¬stand all aspects of filter cloth manufacturer, it is however, advantageous for him to understand a little of the textile language associated with filter cloth for his own protection against ""trial-and-error"" methods, which are both time consuming and costly.If improvements are to be made over existing filter cloth in use an examination of the limiting factors of the cloth used should be made and the major causes for removal determined, e.g. cloth blinding, high moisture in cake, poor cake discharge on air blow, mechanical damage to cloth.As each of the limiting factors mentioned has a bearing on the choice of fibre used, the yarn type and weave of a suitable cloth, an under-standing of these points will assist the mill metallurgist in avoiding repetitive trials offering little degree of success."

"Carbon addition in the oxide pelletizing process is a big concern at the Sidbec-Normines pelletizing plant since 1976.Laboratory pot-grate testing carried out before the initial start-up of the Port-Cartier plant indicated that the nominal pelletizing grate capacity could be increased by fifteen per cent with a suitable carbon addition. Also an improved induration cycle offered the possibility of a significant energy reduction within the process with no adverse effect on pellet quality. A one-month plant scale program duplicated the lab test results and confirmed the anticipated cost saving by using these techniques. Since March 1980, Sidbec-Normines used coke addition as a current operation.This paper reviews briefly earlier laboratory and in-plant test work carried out to investigate the effects of adding carbon materials to the Fire Lake hematite concentrate, and presents operation techniques and plant results of carbon addition in the Port -Cattier pellet plant.IntroductionThe Sidbec-Normines pelletizing plant at Port-Cartier, Quebec, is designed to produce six million ton s per year of oxide pellet s. It is a Dravo-built two-line plant; one line to produce three million s tons per year of blast furnace grade pellets averaging 5.5 per cent silica, and another line of three million ton s to produce direct reduction grade pellets of about 2.0 percent silica.The laboratory pot-grate test program was conducted in 1977 at the British Steel Corporation Research Laboratories in England, with the assistance of J .E. "This paper focusses on what seem to be the leading indicators of prosperity in the minerals industry during this decade: the geographical distribution of deposits, environmental impact, capital allocation and acid consumption. There is a potential for meeting environmental criteria at a reasonable profit margin, but those with limited acid demand within economic range will face hard times to meet growing environmental concerns, resulting in additional mine closures. At the other end, those with old waste dumps who are thinking about smelting capacity additions will need capital influx at a much larger rate than ever before. All things considered, a change should be made in the way the world's copper reserves are computed, because there is a growing need to internalize these effects back to the ore blocks before a meaningful estimate of reserves becomes available.IntroductionThe copper industry has undergone several changes during the past decade, many of which were expected to take place because they rel1ect the economics of ageing mines. However, many others took place that shocked the industry because they were not completely under control. The focus of this paper is to rel1ect on those changes, and on market expectations for this decade that somehow depend on their impact.To review the prospects for new mine developments and expansions from an industry perspective to a full extent, it would be necessary to consider not only the deposits themselves, but also geographical constraints, environmental constraints, labour composition, technology development and use, the availability of capital, ownership issues, and integration within the industry. "Careful tax planning and proper attention to the regulations can result in an optimum deduction ""of the 25% federal resource allowance. Introduced in the Income Tax Act in1976, in part to compensate for the disallowance of provincial mining taxes and royalties. the 25% ""resource allowance"" is a permitted deduction in computing taxable income from mining and petroleum. However, the rules relating to the deduction are complex, and the importance of the deduction which can readily exceed 25% of net income- is frequently underestimated. "High total and dissolved uranium values were noted in the process water at the Cigar Lake Operation (CLO) during early production start-up period, whereas significant levels of dissolved uranium had not been observed previously at similar operations. The excess dissolved uranium resulted in higher demands on the water treatment plant, along with higher operating costs, environmental risks and some unrealized revenue potential. A species balance indicated that uranium was leaching into solution in the grinding, dewatering, and storage circuits under normal operating conditions. Jet boring, water recycle, ball milling, and the use of Pachuca tanks for ore storage results in a highly oxidative environment, which is favourable to leaching.This paper will outline the testwork performed to identify the conditions under which the uranium leaches into solution and to determine required conditions for uranium precipitation. Maximum uranium leaching was found to occur under normal operating conditions (pH ranging from 7.0 to 8.5); testwork indicated that both lowering and raising the pH can significantly reduce the uranium leaching. Analytical results combined with the batch scale testwork indicate that the uranium solubility is associated with carbonate species in the ore. Uranium precipitation was maximized at pH values greater than 10.5 or less than 6, corresponding well to carbonate leaching and precipitation values from literature. Higher precipitation efficiencies were noted at high pH ranges.As a result of this work, a pH control system has been implemented in the Pachuca storage vessels and thickener prior to water treatment plant on a trial basis. Caustic soda is recommended for pH control due to ease of operation, economic viability and material requirements and downstream constraints."

"The fire resistance of several mine conveyor belts is evaluated using a new belt-flammability apparatus developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The test apparatus, experimental details and a calculated flammability index (FI) are described.The FI values are useful for ranking the fir e resistance of mine conveyor belts. Values are determined using parameters readily measured with thermocouples, high-temperature flow probes and a methane-oxygen torch, all of which are components of the Bureau's new test apparatus. The FI varies directly with the flame-spread rate and the rate of heat release during burning and varies inversely with the critical (minimum) ignitor energy output.The fire-resistance ranking of nine different belt types using this moderately scaled apparatus is compared with available full-scale data on belt fires. This comparison shows that the ranking based on the FI is consistent with the full-scale data.IntroductionFull-scale fire hazard evaluations of mine conveyor belts are not easily related to the properties usually measured in small-scale flammability tests. The inadequacy of small-scale belt fire tests has been demonstrated in works by Mitchell, Warner and Reinke.Mitchell and Warner showed that certain neoprene (NP) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) belts, which had been approved by the Code of Federal Regulations 30 CFR 18.65, were nevertheless capable of propagating flame over their entire length when full-scale fire conditions were simulated. Comparable results were also observed by Reinke at the Tremonia experimental mine in Dortmund, West Germany, where all belts burned in full-scale tests even though they passed the small-scale tests. Only by reducing the severity of the full-scale test could these fire-resistant belts be grouped on a pass-fail basis."

"The Coal Research Laboratory (CRL) of CANMET along with other research organizations in coal-producing countries envisage major benefits from computer applications in coal preparation, Some of these benefits are greater system flexibility, improved coal preparation plant performance efficiency and efficient utilization of manpower, all of which result in economic benefits. Computers can be applied for both on-line and off-line purposes; this paper focuses on the on-line applications from the process control point of view.A critical discussion of the different analog and digital process control systems is presented. Recent developments in Great Britain, West Germany, Poland and Australia on automation and instrumentation using on-line measurements of coal ash and moisture contents are identified.The CRL research and development strategy aimed at achieving on-line computer control of an automated coal preparation plant is presented.IntroductionIn the past twenty years an enormous progress in the area of computer technology has been noticed. Computer applications in industrial processes offer greater system flexibility, improved plant performance efficiency and efficient utilization of manpower. Significant computer control development in mineral processing has already been achieved. Although progress has been made in the area of computer applications in coal preparation, more effort is needed to utilize the full potential.The computer applications in coal preparation can be viewed as off-line and on-line. Considerable progress has been reported in the area of off-line computer applications, especially in the areas of modelling, performance evaluation/prediction and statistical analysis. However, only modest progress in on-line applications has been reported(1-7). This paper will focus on: online instrumentation and process control applications, different analog and/or digital control systems, on-line automation and instrumentation in other countries and CRL strategy toward pilot plant automation."

"The decision to invest capital in developing a mine and constructing a mineral processing plant and services is usually made after a feasibility study shows 'that the estimated future cash flow from mine operations will yield an adequate return on the estimated capital expenditures.The actual return on investment may differ substantially from that estimated in the feasibility study, because of the probabilities of errors in estimating capital costs, ore reserves, operating costs, mineral revenue and operating productivity. "Spring-Back/Forward in sheet metals is defined as recovery of elastic strain upon unloading in a deformed sheet specimen. Since this phenomenon can cause alternation in the dimensions of a part, leading to irrecoverable compensations, the operative parameters need to be investigated, thoroughly. To assess spring-forward and effective bending parameters, V-shaped bending dies are the most commonly used experimental approach. In the present research, the effect of bending angle and punch tip radius on the spring-forward behavior of an Al-Mg-Si alloy sheet specimen is studied. To this end, a V-shaped die with four bending angles (i.e. 30°, 45°, 60°, and 90°) was designed and fabricated. Specimens with thickness of 2 mm were cut with dimensions of 50 mm×10 mm. Results show that by increasing the bending angle, the spring-forward angle decreases. In addition, smaller punch tip radiuses lead to further spring-forward. The effect of these parameters on the amount of spring-forward angle, strain distribution and homogeneity along sheet thickness was assessed using finite element analysis (FEA). Simulation results show that as the bending angle increases, the strain is developed more homogenously. Finally, micro-hardness test was used to study the effect of strain hardening caused by bending operation on strength evolution. Results show higher hardness trends for the zones in which the maximum plastic strain occurs.INTRODUCTIONPrecise production plays a significant role in the durability of a part. When it comes to sheet metal forming, this issue should be taken into account as an important factor. Manganese nodules form at the sediment surface of abyssal plains throughout the global ocean at water depths of about 4000-6500 m. The nodules form a continuum from purely hydrogenetic (all metals from seawater) to purely diagenetic (all metals from sediment pore waters), which will determine which metals of potential economic interest are enriched in the nodules. Another important factor in metal enrichment is whether diagenesis in the bottom sediment is oxic or suboxic. There are several nodule fields in the deep ocean that have received much attention with regards to economic potential, the most important being the Clarion-Clipperton zone (CCZ) in the NE Pacific, where the International Seabed Authority (ISA) has signed 12 contracts for exploration areas, each spanning 75,000 square kilometers. Those nodules are rich in nickel (mean 1.3 wt. %), copper (mean 1.1 %), and manganese (28%), with moderate amounts of cobalt (mean 0.2%), molybdenum (587 g/t), and lithium (129 g/t). A conservative estimate is that there exists 21,100 million dry tonnes of nodules in the CCZ, yielding more manganese, twice the nickel, three times the cobalt, and four times the yttrium than the entire land-based reserve base (economic plus marginally economic plus subeconomic reserves) for each metal. Total rare-earth elements (REEs) as oxides average 0.09% in CCZ nodules, a potential byproduct even at that grade because the heavy REE complement averages 26%, compared to less than 1% for the large land-based carbonatite REE deposits. The price for HREEs is much greater than for the light REEs. For comparison, the REEs in deep-ocean ferromanganese crusts are 3 to 5 times greater than nodules and the HREE complement averages 18%. Of the 12 CCZ contracts, 7 are with States (China, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Russia, and a group of States (IOM); and 5 are with companies: G-Tec Sea Mineral Resources NV, Nauru Ocean Resources Inc. (NORI); Tonga Offshore Mining Ltd (TOML), UK Seabed Resources Ltd (Lockheed UK), and Marawa Research and Exploration Ltd. Three other nodule fields that have received attention are in the Peru Basin, which has nodules very rich in manganese (34%) and lithium (mean 311 g/t), the Penrhyn Basin (Cook Islands Exclusive Economic Zone), with nodules very rich in cobalt (mean 0.4%); and the Central Indian Ocean Basin (CIOB), where India has an exploration contract with the ISA. CIPB nodules have mean nickel, copper, and manganese contents of 1.1%, 1.0%, and 24% respectively.
