"Different forms of corrosion, the various corrosive environments encountered, the mining equipment subject to corrosion and the methods to control corrosion in the mining industry are briefly reviewed along with the savings that could be achieved by corrosion control. IntroductionCorrosive conditions in mines and metallurgical plants, lead to deterioration and wastage of equipment and of materials. The cost of corrosion in the mining industry can be significant, and measures to minimize corrosion must be taken to reduce this cost(l-3). Although the data in Table I are twenty years old they indicate the significance of corrosion costs in four industrialized countries. The costs of corrosion in the U.S. metallic ores sector and in the Canadian mining industry are presented in Tables 2 and 3, respectively. Significant savings in the mining industry can be achieved by using corrosion control methods. For example, corrosion in the Canadian mining industry in 1991 cost $1460 million of which $97 million was avoidable. Indirect costs of corrosion associated with plant shutdown, lowered efficiency of equipment and overdesign are additional to the direct costs cited here."

"Responding to market developments, interest in locating deposits of wollastonite has grown significantly. The many occurrences in the Grenville marbles of Quebec can be grouped into disseminated type and discordant vein-type deposits. Disseminated-type wollastonite occurrences have the disadvantages of lower grade, the need for more elaborate mineral separation, and failure to meet ""long grain"" technical specifications. Vein-type deposits have better grades and technical characteristics; exploration should be focussed on these and in the contact-metamorphic aureoles of fluid-rich intrusions. Les nombreux indices sis dans la province de Grenville au Québec peuvent être regroupes en deux catégories soit: les indices dissémines et les indices en veines discordantes. Les indices dissémines ont le désavantage d'être moins enrichis, de requérir une séparation minéralogique plus complexe, et leur wollastonite ne possède pas le degré d'acicularité voulu. "This paper explores the history of AC static variable frequency control drive systems on open cast mining machinery, in particular electric mining shovels and electric walking draglines, over the past ten years. It critiques the peformance of these drive systems from a productivity and operating cost standpoint and evaluates the over-all success of the original design concepts as they were envisaged in the 1970s. The paper details the state-of-the-art as it exists today as well as design improvements contemplated for the immediate future.IntroductionConsidering the fact that the very first successful application of an alternating current electrical distribution system occurred at the Gold King gold mine near Ames, Colorado, U.S.A., in the year 1891, it seems somewhat ironic that almost 100 years later, AC excavator drive systems are just now becoming commonplace in the mining industry.If one were to read the biography of Lucien L. Nunn, the first person to successfully install a commercially viable alternating current power distribution system, one would quickly visualize a parallelism between his fight to achieve acceptance of his new lower cost technology and that of those commissioned with the belief that AC static variable frequency control drive systems are not only a better performing, lower cost drive system for mining excavators today, but moreover, the drive systems of the future in our industry.This paper will deal with the evolution and incorporation of AC static drive systems on open cast mining excavators. "La distribution des éléments majeurs dans une séquence de roches volcaniques felsiques, la formation de Waconichi, au sud de Chibougamau, indique que les roches pyroclastiques du secteur ouest de ce segment sont chimiquement anormales si on les compare à la composition moyenne des roches volcaniques de Chibougamau: elles sont caractérisées par une teneur anormalement élevée en f er, en magnésium et en potassium et une teneur anormalement basse en sodium et en calcium; ce chimisme caractérise les encaissants des dépôts de sulfures massifs d 'origine volcanique.Les coulées rhyolitiques massives sous-jacentes au gite de cuivre-zinc avec or et argent de Lemoine ne montrent pas ou très peu d’altération de ce genre. Le schéma de mise en place des dépôts de sulfures massifs d'origine volcanique et la nature des roches en présence permettent de croire que la zone d'altération mise en évidence à l'ouest de la mine Lemoine puisse être reliée à la mise en place de ce gisement d'ou l'im portance de tenir compte des caractères texturaux des roches lors de l'interprétation de données litho géochimiques."

Empirical relations exist for the estimation of rock block strength at scales larger than standard core sizes. Two recently published relations account for the significant impact that microflaws (pores, open cracks, veins) and weathering/alteration can have on scale effect. These relations were used to estimate the rock block strength of heavily microfractured quartzite from the Bingham Canyon Mine. Predictions were compared to the results of Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS) tests conducted on cylindrical core samples of varying microfracture intensity and diameter. The comparison confirms the sensitivity to microfracturing suggested by existing relations and suggests that they would benefit from more detailed consideration of microfracture strength, density and persistence over a range of scales. The results of a numerical study illustrate how Synthetic Rock Mass (SRM) modeling techniques could be used to complement empirical data in the development of such relations.

The effects of copper on the microstructure and mechanical properties of ultrasonic melt treated Al-xCu (x=0, 4) alloys were investigated. The densities of alloys were increased and their grain sizes were decreased by UST. The hardness and electrical resistivity measurements revealed that the amount of solute Cu within Al matrix was increased by UST. Both the yield and tensile strengths of Al-4Cu alloy were increased by UST. The improved mechanical properties of Al-4Cu alloy by UST were probably due to the reduced amount of casting defects (e.g. pore), grain refinement, and enhanced solid-solution hardening of Cu.

"The circulation wear rates of pure nickel, cupronickel and nickel-plated-steel coins were measured and found to be in the ratio 1:3:1 . The relative wear rates of nickel and cupronickel coins were similar to those reported in earlier studies, and the circulation wear data for nickel were used as a reference in laboratory wear tests. A correlation between circulation wear rates and laboratory wear rates formed the basis for a prediction of service life using relief legibility as an 'end of life' criterion. This criterion was determined to be an average surface thickness loss of 12 um. The surf aces of nickel and Nickel-Banded-Steel (N-B-STM) coins were observed to harden both in circulation and in the laboratory tests at a rate of approximately I VHN/year of actual or simulated service life. It was also observed that the laboratory wear rate of N-B -S coins increased as nickel cladding thickness increased and this effect was attributed to differences in surface hardness.Wear test results are also reported for the new Canadian dollar coin material which shows a better wear resistance than pure nickel. IntroductionThe subject of coinage wear has a long history, and a number of studies have been published, concerned both with the measurement of circulation wear rates and with accelerated laboratory tests to simulate the behaviour of coinage materials in service. As early as 1803, wear tests were conducted by Hatchett on gold coinage using various types of vibratory and tumbling machines». These tests were commissioned by King George III of England who was concerned about the wear of gold coins in circulation.Early in this century, Adrian performed laboratory tests that showed that the wear rates of cupronickel 75/25 and nickel coins were in the ratio 3:1 and this ratio was later confirmed in laboratory tests reported by Daeppen and Zurrerw, The latter authors also weighed cupronickel and nickel coins that had been in circulation for various times and observed the same 3: I ratio. There was further support from Tylczak and Blickensderfer who reported significantly higher abrasive wear rates for cupronickel compared to nickel, when rubbed against sand paper."

"Nineteen streams in the copper and zinc flotation units of the concentrator of the Matagami Division of Noranda Inc. have been sampled f or particle size distributions, chemical assays, and gold and silver contents in each particle size interval. The data are upgraded by the mass balance package BILMA T. These results, in conjunction with microprobe analyses, are used to quantify the silver losses in the copper cleaning flotation stages and to determine how over-all silver and three silver-bearing minerals are recovered in the plant final products. RESUMEDix-neuf produits des circuits de flottation du cuivre et du zinc de la division Matagami de Noranda Inc. ont été échantillonnés pour leur distribution granulométrique, leurs analyses chimiques et Ie contenu d'argent et d'or des fractions granulométriques. Le bilan métallurgique a été obtenu à l'aide du programme BILMA T. La Mine Louvicourt est une mine hautement mécanisée exploitant un gisement polymétallique avec des chantiers transversaux minés et remblayés selon une séquence primaire-secondaire. Dans certaines parties du gisement, il n'y avait qu'un accès à la coupe inférieure, car il n'était pas rentable d'avoir aussi un accès par coupe supérieure. Le minerai situé au-dessus des chantiers avec trous ascendants était considéré comme ressource non rentable par minage mécanisé. L'option de miner ces ressources avec des sous-niveaux avec accès par monterie alimak et forage long-trous de petit diamètre fût donc étudiée et démontra une rentabilité intéressante, particulièrement en considérant les tonnes ainsi minées comme tonnage supplémentaire au tonnage planifié. Dans ces chantiers, les détonateurs électroniques ont été très utiles et de plus, les coûts d'explosifs ont étés réduits considérablement par l'utilisation d'émulsion pompée en vrac.

L'introduction de nouvelles technologies ou la mise en service de nouveaux matériaux peut nécessiter l'adaptation de certain procédés actuels ou le recours a des procédés qui ont peu percé jusqu’ à maintenant.ABSTRACTApplications concerned with ceramic coatings are not as well known as those with metallic coatings. However, ceramic coatings have played a tremendous role in the development of technology. Ceramic coating processes made it possible to overcome technological barriers in the areas of optics, electronics, wear resistance and high temperature applications. Ceramic coatings can provide new properties to materials never considered for demanding applications. They can also open new frontiers and revitalize materials which are maturing or in decline."
