"LOCATIONThe mine and mill are located in Lemoine township which is 20 miles directly south-east of the town of Chibougamau Quebec. Personnel live in Chibougamau and commute to the property over 33 miles of paved and gravel roads. Concentrates are trucked 13 miles to a railway siding on the line connecting Chibougamau and Quebec city.HISTORY Several companies explored the property before acquisition by Patino Mines (Quebec) Limited in 1973. Further exploration led to the discovery of a high grade copper-zinc orebody and the property was brought into production by the above company in 1976.ORE The ore contains 85% - 95% sulphides consisting of chalcopyrite, sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and minor gold and silver. Argenti tetrahedrite, antimonial silver, native bismuth and galena are also pre sent in very minor quantities. Associated gangue minerals are quartz, carbonates and occasionally chlorite."

In terms of throughput, product size and power draw, grindcurves provide a measure of the response of the mill performance to changes in mill operating parameters – usually mill filling. Since presenting the principle in 2006, grindcurves have been applied to a wide variety of AG and SAG mills. Mill response has been carefully measured for variations in: mill fillings from 15% to 40%; throughput by a factor of two; power by 50%; feed blends; liner profile; and mill speed from 65% to 80%. The outcomes of this extensive program of work are presented as the measured grindcurves. How they have enhanced our understanding of mill operation and how they may be applied to practical daily mill control is discussed. It is proposed that this technique provides a viable and valuable mill control tool that may find extensive application in the industry.

McArthur River Operation is the world?s largest high grade uranium deposit and is located in Northern Saskatchewan. McArthur River came into production in December 1999 with a number of innovative technologies to allow for mining of a high grade uranium deposit in challenging geotechnical and hydrological conditions. The raisebore mining method has been supplemented by the continued development of a boxhole mining technique to allow for mining of mineralization that cannot be accessed with a drill chamber from above. An innovative freeze wall re-design ? a cathedral freeze wall, was implemented in 2009 to allow for top access of a new orebody in the unconformity area of the Athabasca Sandstone. This paper highlights some of the ongoing improvements to the mining method and the innovative risk mitigation applied to manage the extraction of this challenging orebody.

"Modal data from Red Dog Main Pit ores were collected and analysed on a size-by-size basis. The Main Pit data were compared to data from composite samples of Red Dog Aqqaluk ores. The data revealed that a large fraction of the sphalerite in the Aqqaluk baritic ore was tied up in sphalerite/galena binaries. This provided an explanation for its poor leadlzinc selectivity compared to Main Pit ores. The Aqqaluk vein ore exhibited levels of sphalerite/galena binaries comparable to that of Main Pit ores resulting in comparable lead/zinc selectivity.An attempt was made to correlate the modal and metallurgical data for Main Pit stockpiles. It was found that there was moderate correlation between the percentage of sphalerite locked in binaries with galena in the <C5>C6 size fi-action and sphalerite deportment to the leadconcentrate.INTRODUCTIONTeck Cominco’s Red Dog Mine in northern Alaska is one of the richest zinc districts in the world. Red Dog Mine has been in operation for over ten years and produces nearly 1 million tonnes of zinc concentrate per mum. Red Dog Mine is an open pit operation and current mining is conducted in the area known as the Main Pit. The Main Pit contains proven reserves of about 41 900 000 tonnes of ore grading 19.2% Zn and 5.2% Pb (Cominco 2000). To the north of the Main Pit is the Aqqaluk deposit. It contains probable reserves of 56 100 000 tonnes of ore grading 16.6% Zn and 4.1 % Pb. After the Main Pit has been exhausted, the Aqqaluk deposit will be exploited.The Aqqaluk deposit consists of three main geologic ore types: baritic, siliceous and vein. The siliceous ore type is dominant, representing 64% of the mineralisation. Composite samples of these ore types were created from drill core and batch flotation tests were performed on them. The flotation tests indicated that there were significant metallurgical differences between Main Pit ore and the Aqqaluk siliceous and baritic ore. The siliceous and baritic ores were found to suffer from poor lead/zinc selectivity (Lin 1999, G&T 1999). It was suspected that there were problems with the original Aqqaluk composite samples, thus a new set of composite samples were created and batch flotation tests were conducted again. In this set of tests, the new baritic ore still suffered from leadlzinc selectivity problems, but the new siliceous ore provided excellent metallurgical results. A summary of the flotation results is given in Table 1. Stockpile 132, which is typical of Main Pit ore, is given for comparison purposes. The mineral suite at Red Dog is relatively simple. The ore consists of galena, sphalerite and pyrite in a silicate matrix. The low zinc recoveries of the baritic ore were largely due to sphalerite losses to the lead concentrate."

Mitochondria play a key role in the regulation of apoptosis (cell death) and in diseases characterised by abnormal apoptotic responses such as cancer. Mitochondrial membrane permeabilisation (MMP), regulated by the mitochondrial permeability transition pore complex, is widely accepted as being central to the process of cell death. As a result there has been considerable recent interest in targeting mitochondrial cell death pathways in the development of new chemotherapeutic agents.(1) There is potential to overcome the two overriding problems in cancer chemotherapy?the common occurrence of drug-resistant tumour cells and the lack of selectivity of cancer drugs in differentiating between tumour cells and normal tissues. Significantly, carcinoma cells have an elevated mitochondrial membrane potential relative to normal cells and lipophilic cations are concentrated within mitochondria in response to mitochondrial membrane potentials. There is potential for the selective targeting to tumour cells with compounds having optimal lipophilic-hydrophilic character. Research stemming from the early 1980?s points to two distinct classes of Au(I) phosphine antitumour agents where an antimitochondrial mode of action has been implicated: (i) neutral linear two-coordinate Au(I) complexes such as triethylphosphinegold(I) chloride and the tetraacetylthioglucose gold(I) phosphine complex, Auranofin; (ii) cationic tetrahedral bis-chelated Au(I) phosphine complexes related to [Au(dppe)2]+.(2) Recently it has been reported that Auranofin, at submicromolar concentrations, induces MMP observed as mitochondrial swelling and dissipation of membrane potential.(3, 4) Both events are completely inhibited by cyclosporin-A, the specific inhibitor of MMP. The permeability changes were shown to occur at concentrations associated with the selective inhibition of mitochondrial thioredoxin reductase.(3) Auranofin is a potent and specific inhibitor of this enzyme due to Au(I) binding to the active-site selenol group.(5) The redox state of mitochondrial thiols may be critical in the control of MMP.(3) In general, swelling is stimulated by thiol blocking or oxidising agents and is prevented by thiol reducing agents.(1) Mitochondrial thioredoxin reductase may play an import role in the redox control of the permeability of mitochondrial membranes.(3) Our interest is in investigating the antitumour potential of Au(I) phosphine compounds using a number of different approaches. In recent work we have evaluated a series of hydrophilic analogs of [Au(dppe)2]+ containing pyridylphosphine ligands which have demonstrated greater tumour selectivity than the parent compound. To investigate the possible antimitochondrial mode of action we are studying the effect of [Au(dppe)2]+ and related compounds on isolated rat liver mitochondria. To assess whether the lipophiliccationic nature of the compounds determines the antitumour activity, we have synthesized a series of novel Au(I) complexes based on heterocyclic carbene rather than phosphine ligands. The similar chemistry and structural features of the two classes of complexes allow us to assess whether the phosphine ligands are essential for the antitumour properties.

The Flash Smelting Process for copper and nickel production has been one of the most successful new metallurgical process developments in the 20th century. The experimental data from laboratory scale investigations of studies has produced information and insight into the reaction mechanisms and kinetics of the flash reactions of copper concentrates. Advanced computer models coupling chemical reactions with a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software became possible with the development of commercial CFD software together with increased computing power. Currently, there are both experimental and CFD modelling, including also CFD–DEM coupling (Discrete Element Method), studies ongoing for investigating the kinetics of matte – slag reactions in the flash smelting furnace (FSF) settler. The ultimate goal of the modelling work is to develop a comprehensive FSF model for studying the behavior of changing raw materials, both primary and secondary, and distribution of their elements between the matte, slag, and gas phases. The use of User-Defined-Functions (UDF) is one way to digitalize metallurgical knowledge and experimental information to be used for supporting process experts and development of artificial intelligence applications in metallurgy. In this paper, a review of the development of the FSF reaction shaft modelling and experimental investigations, and the current work for the settler reactions’ experiments and modelling are presented. INTRODUCTION The Outotec Flash Smelting process (Bryk, Ryselin, Honkasalo, & Malmström 1958) has been used in the copper and nickel industry for 70 years with continuous support from experimental investigations by many research groups in academia, among others Jorgensen and Segnit (1977); Jokilaakso, Suominen, Taskinen and Lilius (1991), Chaubal and Sohn (1986), Kim and Themelis (1986), and in industry Mäkinen and Jåfs (1982); Kojo, Lahtinen and Miettinen (2009); Tuominen, Pienimäki and Fagerlund (2016). It has been developed also for pyrite and lead smelting (Asteljoki, Sulanto & Talonen, 1984). A schematic illustration of the FSF and other main parts of the process is depicted in Figure 1. Also, two and three dimensional physical water or gas models have extensively been used in product and process development (Lilja & Rajainmäki 1995). During the recent decades, computer based models have increasingly been adopted in the FSF research and development (Ahokainen & Jokilaakso, 1998); Ahokainen, Jokilaakso, Taskinen & Kytö, 2006; Hahn & Sohn, 1990; Jorgensen & Elliot, 1992; Zhou, Zhou, Chen & Mao, 2014; White, Haywood, Ranasinghe & Chen, 2015) to name a few, but also in supporting engineering and sales of the technology (Miettinen 2017). Even though the reactions of the sulfidic concentrate particles have been included in the reaction shaft modelling, the complete FSF model with both gas-solid/drop and molten slag/matte drop has so far been and still is too demanding for today’s computer hardware.

The late BO's should see a flurry of success stones about significant leaps of productivity achieved in several plants through systematic process evaluation and computer simulation studies.In Canada. the SPOC project (Simulated Processrng of Ore and Coal) was initiated at CAN MET in 1980 with the obJective of developing and transferrrng to the mineral rndustry a computer-based methodology for process evaluation and optimization. The proiect deliverables include:- an engineering manual covering most aspects of off-line computer simulation:- a bank of FORTRAN software accessible through data communication lines for user familiarization and distributed at a nominal cost in source form by CANMETThe yearly progress reports of the project contain detailed information on the project elements since 1980 16). The context of SPOC can be summed up by quoting Gordon Agar""s 1975 statement during a workshop on research needs in the mineral industry: ""What is needed is a joint effort between the academic community and one or more enliglitened industrial concerns. The effort will have to be an iterative one with data collection followed by testing the model modification of the model (s), more testing prediction, modification. data collection and so on (7). A few parallel in1- t1atives had been reported in papers or research contract reports (8, 9) but there was an obvious need for CANMET to bridge the gap between the R&D and the production sectors by undertaking a project that would document past applications and induce a new generation of initiatives through the consol1dat1on and transfer of suitable manuals and software. The effort took shape as the CANMET SPOC pro1ect in which methodology transfer was to play a key role (10)."

"Red Dog is one of the world’s largest zinc producing mines and a significant producer of lead and silver. While some of the operational challenges relate to the mine’s location in a remote part of Alaska, there are also challenges in the mineral separation process. Recent processing upgrades have included the installation of two M5000 IsaMills to improve the zinc regrind circuit and of one Jameson Cell to improve the pre-flotation circuit. Relatively fine grinding is required to achieve efficient mineral separation at Red Dog, but while fine grinding aids in the production of high grade concentrates, it also creates challenges in the efficient recovery of fine minerals. Over half of the lead lost to the lead circuit tailings, as well as almost half of the zinc lost to the final tailings, is in the finer size fractions (<10 µm). The high pulp density experienced in the pre-flotation and lead rougher circuits also causes significant entrainment loss of lead and zinc to the pre-flotation concentrate and of zinc to the lead concentrate. To help improve fine mineral recovery, Red Dog has recently plant tested and installed magnetic conditioning technology in the flotation circuits. The equipment aggregates fine paramagnetic sulphides and selectively increases their flotation recovery. This paper outlines the testing and positive results at Red Dog.INTRODUCTIONRed Dog is the largest zinc mine in North America and represents approximately 29% of North American zinc concentrate production. The mine is located in northwest Alaska, approximately 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle and 50 miles inland from the Chukchi Sea. The remote location makes the mine accessible only by air or seasonally by ocean-going barges. Red Dog is a partnership between NANA Regional Corporation Inc, the land owner and Teck Alaska Incorporated, the operator of the mine. Red Dog Ore and Mineralogy The Red Dog deposit is a rich sedimentary exhalative (sedex) zinc-lead-silver deposit. The main minerals present in order of abundance are: quartz, sphalerite, pyrite, barite and galena. Production began in 1989 with mining of the Main deposit. Between 1989 and 2012, approximately 55.6 million tonnes of ore with an average grade of 20.5% Zn, 5.6% Pb, and 97 g/t Ag was mined from the Main deposit. Subsequent to the development of the Main pit reserve, two additional open pit deposits were discovered: Aqqaluk and Qanaiyaq. The first blast in Aqqaluk occurred on June 4, 2010. As of December 31, 2014, the Aqqaluk deposit reserve is an estimated 45.7 million tonnes of ore with an average grade of 15.1% Zn, 3.9% Pb and 71 g/t Ag."

"In 2010, closure of the Kidd metallurgical plants along with structural changes to the historical ratios of payable metals led to a review of the operating targets at the Kidd concentrator. Previous operating data indicated that there was potential for significant revenue improvements by lowering the copper concentrate grade. An extended plant trial was carried out in 2011 to quantify the revenue impact of lowering the copper concentrate grade from 27% to 25% Cu, as well as identifying the lower practical grade limit. Analysis of plant trial results indicated that the process change increased net concentrate revenue by $2 M to $3 M per year at current metal prices. Increased revenue was primarily associated with higher silver recovery to the copper concentrate while the marginally improved copper recovery was essentially offset by increased zinc losses and concentrate treatment and freight charges.Details of the plant test work results are discussed in this paper along with the financial analysis of the revenue improvements. Key areas covered are major revenue components of the concentrate contracts, validation of revenue improvements through plant testing and sensitivity of the improvements to market and plant variables.INTRODUCTIONThe Xstrata Copper Kidd concentrator commenced operations in 1966 treating ore from the nearby Kidd volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit in Timmins, Ontario (Thompson, Amsden, & Chapman, 1978). Over the years, up to four separate grinding-flotation divisions were in operation with throughput rates peaking at 4.5 million tonnes per year of ore in the mid 1980’s (Kelebek & Francis, 1998). As the mine production decreased and grinding throughput increased operations were gradually cut back and since 1998 two grinding-flotation divisions have been in operation treating Kidd mine ore. One of the idled divisions has been intermittently used for custom milling operations, most recently the Ni/Cu Montcalm deposit, which was milled from 2004 to 2009. Current budget throughput rates, limited by mine production, are 2.4 million tonnes per year of ore grading 1.7% Cu, 4.3% Zn and 55 g/mt Ag. Concentrate production rates are 150,000 tonnes per year of copper concentrate and 155,000 tonnes per year of zinc concentrate. The Kidd mine is the deepest base metal mine in the world with mining operations down to 9600 ft.In 2010 the copper and zinc plants at the Kidd metallurgical site, which previously treated the concentrate production from the Kidd concentrator, ceased operation due to a variety of economic and market factors. Following the metallurgical plant closures the Kidd concentrator products were shipped off site for treatment. The majority of the copper concentrate is now processed at the Xstrata Copper Horne smelter in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec with the majority of the zinc concentrate processed at Canadian Electrolytic Zinc Ltd. in Valleyfield, Quebec."

"The nickel deposits of Sudbury, discovered in .1885, have probably commanded as much attention as any single group of orebodies in the world. They have been the major source of the world's nickel supply since 1903, when their production first surpassed that from the Pacific Island of New Caledonia. From 1903 to 1914 the production from New Caledonia remained essentially constant, whereas that from Sudbury increased from 13,000,000 to 50,000,000 pounds a year. After 1914 the production from New Caledonia gradually dropped to about 4,000,000 pounds in 1919, where it remained until 1923. During these years the Canadian production increased steadily and since 1923 has gone up at an amazing rate to a peak of over 280,000,000 pounds in 1941. Meanwhile the New Caledonia production increased to about 10,000,000 pounds until the pressure of war raised it to roughly 14,000,000 pounds a year.The Sudbury deposits, because they have been the source of 80 per cent of the world supply of nickel, because of their economic importance to the world of metals, and because they are geologically unique in their occurrence, structure, and genesis, have attracted foremost consideration and the literature relative to their geology is voluminous. This is particularly true in regard to genesis.There is a significant and interesting parallel in time between the advancement of the science of economic geology and the great expansion of the nickel industry. The controversies regarding the fundamental classification of orebodies into generalized types were in full swing during the height of the development and expansion of the great nickel mines, and the Sudbury deposits, being the most important and the only ones of the sulphide type extensively developed, have been the chief source of information in regard to this type. The observations and the conclusions drawn thereon from numerous studies of the various mines of the district have not only influenced, but are the essence of, this chapter of the science."

THE Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company, Limited, is engaged in the mining and concentrating of copper ores, and, incidentally, in the mining of coal and the production of electric power. The Company has been engaged in these various operations both on the mainland of British Columbia and on Vancouver island for the past forty-five years. This paper will attempt to cover their present operations in the Similkameen mining district of southern interior British Columbia. GENERAL CHARACTER OF THE DISTRICT The Interior Plateau in southern British Columbia ranges in elevation from 3,000 feet to 6,000 feet. In the vicinity of Princet0n, a depression in the Plateau forms a well defined basin which is floored with a series of nearly flat-lying Tertiary sediments containing some workable seams of lignite. From this basin, the upland surface rises gradually t0ward the south, from an elevation of 2,000 feet at Princet0n to 4,000 feet at Copper mountain, and 6,000 feet in the upper parts of the Similkameen basin, where it merges into the rugged and diversified t0pography of the Cascade system, with glacier inhabited peaks rising to over 9,000 feet. The valleys of Similkameen river and its tributaries are wide, having flaring sides and gentle slopes, and are separated one from another by subdued rounded spurs, of which Copper mountain is typical. The drainage of this district is taken care of by Similkameen river and its larger tributaries, such as Pasayten river, and Wolfe, Friday, and Whipsaw creeks. The name Copper mountain is applied to a gently arched, nearly flat-topped spur between the deep valley of Similkameen river to the west and the shallower valley of Wolfe creek tO the east. The mountain is appro-priately named from the number of copper deposits occurring on its sides and summit, some of which have been developed int0 an important producer, known as the Copper Mountain mine.

THE first discovery of lead and zinc ore on Calumet island was made in 1893 by John Lawn, who then staked a portion of the property now owned by Calumet Mines, Limited. His discovery was developed by James and Calvin Russell, who are said to have shipped a few tons of sorted ore, averaging 39 per cent zinc, 13 per cent lead, and 11 oz. silver per ton. In 1898, the property was being operated by the Grand Calumet Mining Company, who mined and shipped, for treatment in a Belgian smelter, 1,100 tons of ore averaging 32 per cent zinc, 9 per cent lead, and an unreported content of gold and silver. After some indecisive exploration by an American syndicate in 1907, the property lay idle until1910, when the Calumet Metals Company-later reorganized as the Calumet Zinc and Lead Company-re-commenced exploration. After sinking an 85-foot shaft-the McDonald shaft-and doing a few hundred feet of drifting and cross-cutting, this Company, in 1912, erected a 150-ton daily capacity gravity-concentration plant, in which some 800 tons of ore, mined from the McDonald shaft and Bowie pit, were milled. Owing to very disappointing mill recoveries, the property was shut clown and-after several years of idleness-in? 1916 the mill and mining plant were destroyed by fire and the Company went into bankruptcy. In 1918, an unknown operator shipped to an Omaha, Nebraska, smelter 22 tons of ore, probably sorted from the dumps of the Ste. Anne shaft and Galena pits, averaging 44 percent lead, and 0.26 oz. gold and 61 oz. silver per ton. The British Metals Corporation (Canada), Limited, in 1926, optioned the property. They unwatered the McDonald shaft and, after doing an additional 300 feet of cross-cutting and drifting on the 85-ft. level, estimated there were some 33,000 tons of ore between this level and the surface. Surface exploration, including trenching, on other showings on the property gave discouraging results and the option was dropped.

"IntroductionAt TransAlta Utilities Corporation&apos;s Highvale Mine, located west of Edmonton, Alberta (Fig. I and 2), dragline stripping has proved to be a practical and economical method of overburden removal and future plans have been based upon the continued use of draglines (Fig. 3) as the major stripping equipment (Williams, 1979, Nikols et al., 1986). However, long range planning has shown that the capacity of draglines alone will be exceeded in the early 1990s as mining progresses into deeper overburden cover (Tapics, 1983). Strip ratios will increase from I.3 bank m!/ t of coal in 1985to 4.5 bank m3 / t in 1995. During this period the depth of overburden will increase substantially and the areas to be mined will be characterized by weak soils including glacially displaced overburden. This increased overburden depth in relatively weak soils will make it impractical to _continue side casting by draglines without prestripping in advance. In 1983, a major investigation was initiated to determine what additional overburden removal equipment was appropriate to the Highvale operations, and recognizing the long delivery times of this major equipment. when it would be required. This paper describes studies and tests which were undertaken in 1983 and 1984 to select prestripping methods and equipment for the future operation of the mine.Previous planning studies have shown that with the current burn schedule and with the economies of progressing from low cover to high cover, as has been practiced in the past, overburden volumes will exceed the capacity of the existing draglines in the early 1990s (Fig. 4). These previous studies had placed reliance on (I tandem dragline operation for future overburden removal requirements up to a depth of 45 m throughout the Highvale Mine. New drilling together with the associated geotechnical studies and some detailed planning on the practicality of using tandem draglines, created concerns about their universal application. Even without considering geotechnical conditions there was a depth limitation to tandem dragJines and substantial prestripping would be required to achieve the ultimate depths."

"Seas and oceans constitute about 70% of the earth’s surface. They contain an enormous stock of various mineral resources such as sedimentary (marine placers), massive sulfide ore deposits, manganese nodules and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts. Sea and ocean floor ore deposits could well contribute to the meeting of ever-rising demand for raw materials in the metal industry. In this regard, more research and development in science and technology appear to be required to ensure maximum benefit from the mineral resources of seas and oceans. Since the 1960s, a variety of mineral and metallurgical processes have been studied and developed to deal with marine ores and to extract metals such as gold, nickel, copper, cobalt, manganese, tin, platinum group metals (PGM), zirconium, thorium, etc.In marine environments, there are many parameters which can affect the selection of the mineral and metallurgical processes. These include the extent and grade of the deposit, mineralogical and chemical properties of the deposit, and physical properties of minerals present with particular reference to particle size distribution and mineral liberation size.In this paper, we briefly review the latest trends in processing and extraction of marine mineral resources. Mineral processing technology is mostly applied for recovery of precious metals i.e. gold and PGM, in particular, from marine placers. In general, pre-treatment (sizing, classification, dewatering), gravity concentration techniques (shaking tables, spirals, jigs, etc.,), flotation, magnetic, and electrostatic separation are the options for enrichment of marine placer ore deposits. In the case of massive sulfides, manganese nodules/cobalt-rich crusts, hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical methods (as proven technological methods) can be exploited for extraction of metals from concentrates after physical separation or directly from marine ores. The hydrometallurgical treatments involve acid (e.g., sulfurichydrochloric) and alkaline (e.g., ammonia) leaching with different reducing agents and pre-treatments such as roasting. Alternatively, pyrometallurgical treatments involve mostly smelting, chlorination and segregation processes."

"In this work, the kinetics of ferric-ferrous redox reaction on a passivated sphalerite electrode is studied by the application of chronoamperometry method in 0.5 mol L-1 H2SO4 solution. The electrochemical behaviour of ferric and ferrous couple was investigated on two sphalerite minerals acquired from two different geological regions (Iran and Canada). The carbon paste electrode (CPE) of sphalerite was initially prepared and passivated in 0.5 mol L-1 H2SO4 solution and after reaching the steady-state condition, ferric and ferrous sulfate solution was added. The registered current density differences between the current density of the passivated electrode and that of the electrode in the iron salts added solution were interpreted for kinetics of ferric-ferrous reduction-oxidation reaction. The equilibrium potential for ferric-ferrous couple on sphalerites surface was about 500 mV vs. Ag/AgCl. The exchange current density (i0) for ferric-ferrous redox reactions on the sphalerite samples had the same magnitude of 10–6 A cm–2. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements at 550 mV vs. Ag/AgCl illustrated that sphalerite oxidation was controlled by two charge transfer process in both of Fe-free and Fe-containing solutions. The charge transfer resistance remarkably decreased when Fe salts added to the 0.5 mol L-1 H2SO4 solution, owing to the ferric-ferrous redox reactions being the predominant reactions on sphalerite surface.INTRODUCTION Direct atmospheric leaching processes for sphalerite concentrates are performed by reduction of an oxidant (e.g. ferric ion and oxygen) and oxidation of sphalerite to zinc ions. Introduction The property of Pioneer Gold Mines of B. C., Limited, is located in the Lillooet mining district of British Columbia, on Cadwallader creek, 54 miles distant by motor road from Shalalth, a station on the Pacific Great Eastern railway. Milling by the present Company was commenced in 1924, a small amalgamation plant, consisting of a crusher, Bryan mill, and plates being operated until 1928. Tailing from this plant was impounded and later treated in the 100-ton continuous counter-current decantation cyanide plant which was erected during 1927-28 and placed in operation during May of 1928. A second cyanide plant, employing continuous counter-current decantation, having a nominal capacity of 200 tons, has been erected during the past few months and was put into operation during September of the present year. The ultimate capacity of the combined units of the present mill has not been determined, but it is expected to be much in excess of the rated capacity. The Ore The ore, as received at the mill, consists chiefly of quartz carrying free gold, with small amounts of pyrite, arsenopyrite, and pyrrhotite in evidence, though probably amounting to less than one per cent of the total. Some gold is very closely associated with the sulphides. The country rock is a basic igneous rock, probably an augite diorite. Near the vein it is highly altered to sericite, which slimes readily on grinding, and does not settle very well. The quartz is of two types, clear and ribbon. In the latter, the ribbons, which are not much thicker than paper, consist of shattered sulphides. In crushing this ribbon quartz, breakage is often along the streaks, exposing these shattered faces to advantage in subsequent treatment. While gold is the metal for which the ore is mined, some silver is also present and is paid for by the mint. It is, however, unimportant from a commercial viewpoint. From the standpoint of crushing and grinding, the ore might be termed &apos;medium &apos;hard&apos;.

"The Dez River flows from the Zagros Mountains into the great Khuzestan plain, Southwest of Iran. The 203 m high Dez Dam is a double curvature thin concrete arch dam, with a Pulvino, founded on thick bedded to massive conglomerate of Bakhtiary Formation, mainly horizontal and very less jointed at the dam site. Construction work was completed in 1963, creating a reservoir with a total storage volume of 3’315 million m3. The dam body, with some 350’000 m3 volume and (W/H=1.1/1.0), is the dominant feature of the project.Geological and geotechnical studies at the dam site started in 1957 and continued during the whole period of dam construction. Simultaneously, two extensive programs of laboratory testing were carried out in New York and Milan.Most of the results were recorded in the project design documents and in two very well-known papers of Talobre et. al. (1964) and Dodds (1966), however, no detail results are available for most of tests.In order to estimate geomechanical parameters of the rock mass foundation for numerical modeling of the dam body and its foundation, reassessment of the in-situ and laboratory test results using the recent rock mechanics methods was required.This paper explains how the outcomes of those tests, performed more than 50 years ago, were reevaluated and how the definitions and parameters presented in the project reports were re-interpreted using the recent rock mechanics concepts and definitions. Also, the results of classification of Bakhtiary conglomerate using GSI system and application of Hoek & Brown failure criterion for estimating rock mass parameters have been described.INTRODUCTIONThe Dez River flows from its headwaters in the Zagros Mountains into the great Khuzestan plain. Just before entering the plane, the river passes through a narrow, steep gorge that is about 17 km long. The Dez Dam is located at the entrance to this gorge, some25-km upstream of the city of Dezful and 150-km upstream from the provincial capital Ahwaz (Figure 1)."
