Demonstration projects using hydrogen as a fuel are becoming very common. Often these projects rely on project-specific risk evaluations to support project safety decisions. This is necessary because regulations, codes, and standards (hereafter referred to as standards) are just being developed. This paper will review some of the approaches being used in these evolving standards, and techniques which demonstration projects can implement to bridge the gap between current requirements and stakeholder desires. Many of the evolving standards for hydrogen-fuel use performance-based language, which establishes minimum performance and safety objectives, as compared with prescriptive-based language that prescribes specific design solutions. This is being done for several reasons including: (1) concern that establishing specific design solutions too early will stifle invention, (2) sparse performance data necessary to support selection of design approaches, and (3) a risk-adverse public which is unwilling to accept losses that were incurred in developing previous prescriptive design standards. The evolving standards often contain words such as: ?The manufacturer shall implement the measures and provide the information necessary to minimize the risk of endangering a person?s safety or health.? This typically implies that the manufacturer or project manager must produce and document an acceptable level of risk. If accomplished using comprehensive and systematic process the demonstration project risk assessment can ease the transition to widespread commercialization. An approach to adequately evaluate and document the safety risk will be presented.

"A trondhjemite stock intrudes a volcanic sequence that has massive sulphide lenses and that is metamorphosed to the greenschist facies at Gutcher Lake, 25 km north of Wawa, Ontario. The stock is 4 km2 in plan and is partly enveloped by an aureole of chlorite-epidote-amphibolehornfels up to 1 km wide. Within this contact aureole, biotite is partly pseudomorphosed by chlorite;epidote and hornblende are mottled by chlorite, calcite, plus quartz; albite has 0% An to 8% An; and hornblende porphyroblasts have actinolite rims. The stock has chlorite pseudomorphous after biotite; and feldspar is mottled by white mica plus calcite and has a clear rim of albite. Fractures filled with quartz, calcite, ankerite, chlorite, white mica, pyrite, and native gold cross-cut the stock and its hornfels aureole. These gold-bearing veins are enveloped by foliated rocks with quartz, calcite, white mica, and chlorite that grade outward from the veins into trondhjemite or hornfels.The stock, emplaced into a submarine volcanic series, emanated heat that caused seawater to convect and formed a contact aureole of hornblende hornfels. The stock eventually intruded its aureole and this culminated with regional metamorphism to the greenschist facies. Regional metamorphism hydrated the stock and its hornfels aureole. Native gold precipitated with quartz along fractures from metamorphic flu ids in response to cooling and wallrock hydration. exploration for this type of gold deposits should focus around felsic intrusions that have albite and that have contact aureoles retrograded by regional metamorphism."

"To optimize gold recovery in complex leach-to-electrowinning processes, Gekko Systems developed the Gekko resin exchange column (G-REX) as an intermediate step, using a highly gold-selective resin to isolate contaminant metals. The AuRIX®100 resin produced by Purolite is licensed exclusively to Gekko, with the G-REX column designed specifically for this resin. Operational experience has been gained at the Castlemaine Goldfields Ballarat gold mine. In near-continuous operation since 2008, the Ballarat plant treats unclarified concentrate leach solution. The extension of this technology to higher throughputs and more complex chemistry is discussed.RÉSUMÉ Afin d’optimiser la récupération de l’or dans des procédés complexes impliquant la lixiviation suivie de l’extraction électrolytique, Gekko Systems a développé la colonne Gekko de résines échangeuses d’ions (G-REX) comme étape intermédiaire, à l’aide d’une résine hautement sélective pour la récupération de l’or qui permet d’isoler les métaux contaminants. "It is quite likely that more than a handful of junior exploration companies will receive some startling news from their accountants this spring when 1989s tax returns are being prepared. These companies could find that, for the first time ever, they will have to write a cheque to the federal government on account of a new federal capital tax which became effective July I, 1989IntroductionMany mining companies which have never had to pay a federal income tax are finding that they indeed have a tax liability for 1989. Non-producing companies, such as junior exploration companies, almost automatically assume that they don't have to pay any income tax. But, a new tax imposed under the Income Tax Act catches especially the company that has no income.Effective July 1, 1989, a federal capital tax (some call it a corporation minimum tax) is payable by any corporate carrying on business in Canada where the corporation has ""taxable capital"" exceeding $10 million. As a result of the popular use of flow-through shares in recent years, many junior exploration companies are finding that their balance sheets show capital stock over $10 million, and that they are consequently caught by the new tax. Further, some of these companies are finding, to their chagrin, that the tax for 1989 was due on February 28, 1990, and that non-deductible interest is ticking away on unpaid taxes."

"Concerns about using microdiamonds for resource estimation have been raised by workers because multiple diamond populations exist in many parts of the mantle source region, small diamonds in kimberlite could be exposed to proportionately greater levels of resorption and modification, and euhedral microdiamonds could crystallize immediately prior to kimberlite eruption. This paper addresses these concerns; discusses the geology of the mantle, the principal diamond host rocks, and the impact of mantle processes; compares micro- and macrodiamond properties and features; and outlines steps to identify and mitigate the risk of diamond resorption and its impact on the diamond grade-size relationship.RÉSUMÉ Des travailleurs se sont interrogés sur l’utilisation de microdiamants pour estimer la ressource; en effet, de multiples populations de diamants existent dans plusieurs secteurs de la région source dans le manteau. Des petits diamants dans la kimberlite pourraient être exposés à des niveaux proportionnellement supérieurs de résorption et de modification; de plus, des diamants idiomorphes pourraient cristalliser immédiatement avant l’éruption de la kimberlite. Tooth wear on mining shovels presents a challenge for productivity. A shovel with worn teeth suffers from increased digging forces, longer fill times, and an increased likelihood of lost or broken teeth and adapters. Efficient maintenance planning relies on knowledge of tooth decay rates and patterns. A fully automated wear monitoring system can record detailed logs of tooth wear, permitting G.E.T. personnel to optimize maintenance scheduling. Studies have demonstrated that planned tooth change-outs result in significantly reduced costs as compared to unplanned maintenance. A machine-vision-based tooth-wear monitoring method is introduced. A rugged camera is installed on the boom of cable shovels, or on the stick of hydraulic shovels. The images are processed using a photogrammetric algorithm to determine the individual tooth lengths. Tooth length data is collected at intervals during shovel operations, forming a profile of the current wear state, speed of decay, wear pattern, and expected lifespan of teeth. A case study in a South American mine on a Komatsu PC8000 hydraulic front shovel is presented. Tooth wear is tracked over a 6-day period and wear rate statistics are computed for 6 teeth. This validates the system and provides an example of how wear patterns can be recorded and analysed by an automatic system. Armed with this data, mine personnel can reduce the cost and lost time due to unplanned maintenance, and observe the effects of mine conditions and operator behaviour on tooth wear.

"Since 1989, the Mine Environmental Neutral Drainage Program (MEND) has sponsored research into ways of reducing the environmental impact and financial liabilities associated with Acid Mine Drainage from tailings and waste rock. Toward this overall objective, Kilborn was contracted to review the use and applicability of passive treatment systems for acid mine drainage.Experimentation using passive systems to treat acid mine drainage has been ongoing since the early 1980's in North America. Passive treatments are generally considered an attractive alternative to active lime treatment, since they require minimal human involvement, no power, and only seasonal or periodic care and maintenance after establishment. Most attractive is that initial capital cost to implement a passive treatement system is generally low to moderate. Ongoing operating costs are similarly low when compared to active treatment systems.Passive treatment systems currently used, or under investigation to treat acid mine drainage include: anoxic limestone drains, aerobic wetlands, reed bed wetlands, compost wetlands, microbial systems and bioabsorption systems. These wastewater treatment systems utilize the chemical, biological and physical removal processes that occur naturally in the environment to improve wastewater quality, including: oxidation, reduction, coagulation, adsorption, absorption and precipitation; microbial activity; and, gravity aeration and dilution. The rates at which these processes occur determines the loading which can be treated and the effectiveness of the system.The results of our literature review will be summarized, and insight provided into the applicability of passive systems to treat acid mine drainage from Canadian Mines."

"The potential for mudrushes is a potential hazard that should be evaluated during cave mining studies. Mudrushes are a phenomenon that can have very different origins, but produce the same results: injury, loss of life, damage to property, excess dilution, production delays, or mine closure. Although mudrushes are more common in cave mines than other mines, any mining activity that enables the accumulation of fine particles and water is susceptible to mudflow. This paper describes the process developed by the authors during the past decade to evaluate the risk of mudrushes, specifically in caving and sublevel caving mines.RÉSUMÉ Un danger potentiel qui devrait être évalué durant les études d’exploitation par blocs foudroyés est la possibilité d’afflux de boue. Le phénomène des afflux de boue peut avoir des origines très diverses; les résultats sont cependant les mêmes : des blessures, des pertes de vie, des dommages à la propriété, une dilution excessive, des délais de production ou des fermetures de mines. Bien que les afflux de boue soient plus fréquents dans les mines exploitées par blocs foudroyés, toute activité minière qui permet l’accumulation de particules fines et d’eau est sujette à des coulées de boue. Le présent article décrit le processus développé par les auteurs au cours de la dernière décennie pour évaluer le risque d’afflux de boue, surtout dans les mines exploitées par blocs foudroyés et par sousniveaux foudroyés."

"Canada doesn't really have a tax system for mining - it has eleven separate tax systems! The consequent maze adds some undefinable margin of difficulty to making investment decisions in Canada. But, this 11U1Ze is not likely to be simplified. Solution: learn it and sell it! Intricate Network of Winding PathwaysWebster's New World Dictionary defines the word ""maze"" as follows: ""a confusing, intricate network of winding pathways; labyrinth ... a state of confusion or bewilderment"". Webster's does not go on to give an example of a maze, but the dictionary could easily have referred to the taxation of a Canadian mining operation. The uninitiated would almost certainly look upon such taxation as a maze of the most perplexing sort.Twenty years ago, Canada's tax system was really quite simple. It is true that Canadian mining profits were subject to three levels of taxation (federal income tax, provincial income tax, and provincial mining tax), but this didn't pose a problem. Prior to 1974, at least the provincial income tax systems were somewhat the same in terms of rules .and rates, and even the provincial mining tax systems resembled one another. Mining profits were subject to pretty much the same rules, no matter what province or territory hosted the mine. Those were the “good old days” one could even dare to generalize about tax rates without fear of being labelled an imbecile!"

"Maximizing the value of each tonne of processed ore is the goal for all operations. Cyanidation processing of gold-copper ores has been challenging since its first use in 1889. The current practice treats a bleed or the total flow of mill solution to recover copper as copper sulfide (by sulfidization, acidification, recycling, and thickening), or to recover the cyanide (by acidification-volatilizationneutralization). The process presented uses the adsorption of copper cyanide by carbon and the selective elution of copper from carbon to concentrate copper into a smaller stream. Copper contained in the smaller stream is precipitated as copper cyanide.RÉSUMÉ Toutes les exploitations ont pour objectif commun d’optimiser la valeur de chaque tonne de minerai traité. Depuis sa première utilisation en 1889, la méthode de traitement par cyanuration des minerais aurifère et cuprifère s’est révélée complexe. La pratique actuelle traite la saignée ou le débit total d’une solution de traitement du concentrateur pour récupérer le cuivre sous la forme de sulfure de cuivre (par sulfuration, acidification, recyclage et épaississement), ou pour récupérer le cyanure (par acidification, volatilisation et neutralisation). Le procédé présenté dans cet article utilise l’adsorption sur charbon actif de la solution de cyanure de cuivre et l’élution sélective du cuivre depuis le charbon pour concentrer le cuivre en un plus petit jet. Le cuivre contenu dans ce plus petit jet est précipité sous forme de cyanure de cuivre."

"In March 1993, Ram Raising Limited was faced with a challenge. Placer Dome Incorporated, Dome Mine Division requested from Ram Raising that they design station excavation into the existing No. 8 shaft from No. 3 mine levels. This work had to be done without loss of production time in the underground department.Due to the time frame of the project, every detail had to be carefully considered, with extra care that all pros and cons had been worked out.Ram Raising submitted a work Plan that had been worked out with the Redpath Group which included the infrastructure requirements; the engineering design; the scheduling and sequence of work; and the excavation design and blasting procedures.A proposal was' put together by both Ram Raising and Placer Dome outlining the infrastructure requirements, including the engineering design, scheduling and sequence of the work, excavation design and blasting procedures. The proposal accepted by Placer Dome and, on July 3D, 1993 work commenced to breakthrough eight stations. Work continued until December 1993 with the completion off our stations. The project was then stopped to allow the station access drifts from No.3 mine to be completed. The second phase of the project began on May 27 and was completed on September 15, 1994.This paper shows how, through innovative design and the full cooperation between client and contractor, a project of this nature can be completed successfully."

"IntroductionThe Highvale Mine is located 70 km west of Edmonton , Alberta on the south side of Lake Wabamun. It has been developed by TransAlta Utilities Corporation as a captive mine to supply fuel to two genera ting power plant s. The mine is owned by TransAlta and operated under contract by Manalta Coal. Within the mine permit area, TransAlta own s the right to mine 80% of the recoverable surface mineable coal.The planning process starts with the annually produced 25-year energy forecast which is provided by the Electric Utility Planning Council (EUPC). A 1983 forecast predicts an average annual increase in energy requirements of 4% over the next 25 years. Put another way, the requirement will double before the end of the century. A lar ge part of the base load generation of the Province of Alberta is provided by th e plants fueled from Highvale Mine. The Highvale Mine is therefore expected to maintain a high output over a long period of time.Mine PlanningMine planning is an ongoing, interative process that draws from many sources. All levels of planning draw from the same sources but du e to the different processes and objectives of each planning class, the degree of influence may differ. The planner becomes then a coordinator bringing together data and excerpts from several disciplines in groups. Generally, there are four classes of mining plan s; these are all used at the Highvale Mine (Table I)."

For purposes of this paper, the goals can be more simply defined for operational purposes as either increasing revenue or decreasing costs.The strategy will allow us the framework for measuring tactical decisions such as computer and software acquisitions.The Mine Life CycleTo start with, let us look at the mine life cycle from a computer systems point of view:-Exploration-Property Development-Feasibility-Construction-OperationFrom a systems point of view, the exploration cycle is oriented to geophysical and geochemical computing. Property development starts with drilling and building the geological data base. The feasibility cycle includes all stages of evaluating the decision to proceed with mine development: ore reserve calculations; mine planning; and financial projections. Construction includes project management and project accounting systems. Systems required for operation are those needed by personnel at the mine site."

"Les Services TMG (Niobec) currently treat a niobium ore in the Chicoutimi area of Quebec. The mineral pyrochlore is present in a carbonatite deposit which assays 5% to 7% apatite.The ore is ground to minus 65 mesh and deslimed at 10 micrometres. Part of the carbonates are floated with a fatty acid emulsion and rejected to the tailings as a first step to ensure the proper conditions for the flotation of the pyrochlore concentrate. The carbonate concentrate is 65% minus 44 micrometres and is composed of dolomite, calcite, 22% apatite and a minor amount of silicates.A laboratory investigation was undertaken to determine the feasibility of extracting apatite from the carbonate concentrate. This led to the development of an economic flowsheet to produce high-grade apatite concentrate. The apatite is depressed with phosphoric acid, and the pH is adjusted at 4.8-5.0 with sulphuric acid. An additional amount of fatty acid is added to permit efficient flotation of the carbonates. 1n a second stage, the silicates left behind with the apatite concentrate can be removed by depressing the apatite with AIC3 while floating the silicates with a secondary amine.The results of the laboratory tests indicate the possibility of producing an apatite concentrate assaying 38.3% P2O5 (83.7% BPL) with a recovery of 66.2%. Pilot-plant tests undertaken at the concentrator yielded a concentrate of 34% P205 and recovery of 76%."

"The traditional Denver flotation cell is generally suitable to process material ranging approximately from 5 µm to 300 µm. For floating over 300 µm material, its efficiency is significantly getting lower mainly due to the difficulty to suspend coarse particles uniformly, which decreases the chances of particles to attach to bubbles and increases the chances of detachment.RTFT (Rio Tinto Fer et Titane) owns one of the world’s largest hemo-ilmenite deposits. Considering the whole processing technology, the ore is only crushed to -1180 µm. The crushed ore contains about 0.32% S and most of the sulfur is removed by rotary kilns in the ore preparation plant. In order to achieve a similar S reduction, without emitting SO2 into the air, an alternative technology by flotation was pursued.Laboratory and pilot scale-up tests showed that traditional Denver flotation cell could perfectly remove the sulfur from the material sizing 0-300 µm. For the coarser particle sizes, two different models of equipment were tested to improve flotation efficiency: HF (HydroFloat Separator) from Eriez and CLF from BGRIMM (Beijing General Research Institute of Mining and Metallurgy), China. The D6” HF, which is a device that combines flotation and gravity separation, demonstrated its ability to recover those very coarse particles. As compared to the Denver flotation cell, the modified 25 L CLF coarse particle flotation cell achieved better results at higher pulp solids percentage and with a shorter flowsheet."

"A recent information sheet from the Mining Health and Safety Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Labour was sent to all Ministry inspectors and engineers. The subject title was' 'Two Brakes on a Hoist Carrying Persons"" and it quotes mining regulation 699, sub-section 206(i):No hoist shall be used for the transporting of persons unless it has a braking system consisting of at least two sets of mechanical brakes to stop and hold the drum for the shaft conveyance transporting the persons.The intent of the regulation is that each of these brakes is to be set so that, individually, they can safely stop the drum carrying persons and also hold the drum without movement with the maximum manload.This can be achieved in the following ways: Single Drum Hoist-one brake on each side of the drum, one brake on the drum, one brake on the pinion shaft, where disc brakes are used two separate disc brake assemblies on the disc. Double Drum Hoist, brakes on companion drum can serve as backup brake only pinion brake with one drum unclutched.Friction Hoist, one brake on each side of drum As new hoists can be manufactured easily with a two-brake system, attention will be focused on retrofitting pinion brakes to older hoists.A brake mounted on a pinion shaft is designed purely as an emergency brake in the event of main brake failure , controls malfunction, and power loss."

"IntroductionThe Republic of Indonesia is a developing Southeast Asian country that unites the Indian and Pacific oceans, and spreads across nearly 14000 islands with a total land area of about two million km-. The distance across the country approximates the distance across Canada: Indonesia extends for more than 6000 km from the northern tip of Sumatra to the eastern border of Irian Jaya in the middle of New Guinea. With a population of around 180million, Indonesia is one of the world's most populous countries. A mix of 366 ethnic groups populates the country and there are some 250 distinct languages spoken. The topography of Indonesia generally is quite rugged because of its numerous volcanos. For example, the island of Java has 121 volcanos, of which 15 rise above 3000 m and another 44 reach heights between 2000 m and 3000 m.Indonesia has a diversified resource base, with plentiful energy resources (coal, oil, gas and hydroelectric), significant mineral deposits, large timber potential and a developed system of agricultural commodity production and export. A high proportion of the primary resources are on the sparsely populated islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan, whereas 7'3 of Indonesia's people reside on Java, or on 70/0 of the country's land area. Around Jakarta in western Java the population density is around 8000 per krn2. This contrasts with less than nine people per km- on Sulawesi (Fig. I)."

The Adra tunnel near Naramata BC experienced a fire in 2010 that burned timber sets within the tunnel and caused severe spalling of rock from the roof and tunnel walls. The nature of the damage is documented and efforts completed to rehabilitate and open a portion of this tunnel to the public are described. The use of shortcrete and rock bolts is a technically and economically superior support system to timber sets as well as being far more fire resistant.
