Where to get the necessary development funds is a common problem facing many juniors.This month, Tax Notes discusses briefly the principal income tax implications of several alternative development plans that are typically available to the junior mining company and its shareholders.IntroductionAt some point in time, many junior exploration companies face a common dilemma-a promising prospect has been proven up and is read y for further development, but alas, the company is flat broke! In this situation, a number of alternatives is available to the company, including the possibility of ""going it alone"" by raising capital through a public offering, or by striking a deal with a ""major"" or some other substantial investor.This article focuses on the latter possibility, and discusses in broad term s the main income tax implications of various arrangements between a typical junior exploration company and a larger public company for the development of a particular property. It will be appreciated that a discussion of other important considerations, such as those pertaining to securities exchange regulation s and company law requirements, is beyond the scope of this article.Jointly Owned CorporationPerhaps the simplest way of dealing with the problem of financing the development of a property is to sell the property outright, pocket the proceeds, and run! Clearly, though, this alternative is unacceptable to most prospectors and developers, who are predictably reluctant to completely relinquish their equity interest in a promising property. An additional strike against such an outright sale is that the sale could trigger an income tax liability. Generally speaking, in the case of a simple sale of a mineral property, for income tax purposes the proceeds are applied to reduce the taxpayer' s unclaimed balance of Canadian development expense (""CDE""), with any unapplied excess being brought into income and taxed at ordinary corporate tax rates."

"The oil sands industry is still fairly young with the first viable oil sand operation having been started in Alberta in 1960. Since then numerous modifications and improvements have been tried and implemented. The current process makes use of high velocity pumping of oil sands slurry with hot water (hydrotransport) to achieve separation of bitumen from the sand.A number of the oil sands processes have been adapted from unit operations that are used in mineral processing, such as crushing, screening, flotation, cycloning and thickening. This paper outlines a typical oil sands process flowsheet and investigates the differences and similarities in technologies and costs to other mineral processing industries. It also considers the very large throughputs required, and presents some of the difficulties and challenges currently faced by the industry as a result of high demand for oil and environmental pressures.INTRODUCTIONOil sands (also known as tar sands) deposits are found throughout the world. The Athabasca Oil Sands deposit in Aberta is the largest of these. Oil sands consist of a mixture of crude bitumen (a semi-solid form of crude oil), silica sand, clay minerals, and water. In this paper, some applications of carbon extraction replicas, as samples for transmission electron microscopy (TEM), are discussed. Modern high strength microalloyed (HSMA) steels, used as structural or pipeline materials, have very small grains with substructures. Replicas used in TEM can resolve the grain boundaries and can be used for grain size measurements in cases where the small size of the grains pushes the resolution of conventional optical microscopes. The grain size variations obtained from replicas correlated very well with mechanical property variations, indicated by hardness, in the fine-grained heat-affected zone and base metal of some welded HSMA steels. Replicas are also very suitable samples for precipitate examination with analytical TEM. Advantages and limitations of the application of replicas, as well as some corrections for the estimation of the volume fraction of fine precipitates, are discussed.

"Trials of automated technology at underground mine sites around the world have reported increased production and the potential for lower energy consumption. Autonomous mining eliminates a range of delays related to operator downtime and travel to the workface and facilitates continuous operation in conditions that are unsafe for workers. Automation also introduces complexities and safety hazards arising from equipment–personnel interactions; automated processes must be isolated from other stope-cycle–related activities such as production drilling, development, loading, and backfilling, poten¬tially requiring changes to the mine design to maintain an efficient and safe operation. "The gold recovery of a Mexican cyanidation plant, in Sonora, has been decreasing due to the increasing presence of gold tellurides. This work presents the results of different processes aimed to recover the remaining gold from the cyanidation tailings of the operation. The cyanidation in the mine is performed at 0.1 g/L NaCN and pH = 10.3, adjusted with lime. The treatments studied in the laboratory with these tailings were: cyanidation at higher cyanide concentration than that used in the plant, cyanidation with oxygen injection, cyanidation with oxygen and lead nitrate addition, and thiourea leaching. The results obtained with each of these treatments are presented and discussed with the final objective of proposing a method to recover the gold associated with tellurium.INTRODUCTION It has been demonstrated that gold telluride is refractory to the conventional cyanidation process and, for this reason, some alternative methods to recover precious metals from tellurides have been proposed. (Zhang et al., 2010). These include cyanidation with modified conditions or the use of non-cyanide leaching agents. This work presents the gold leaching results of tests performed with a sample of cyanidation tailings obtained from a Mexican deposit containing telluride species. The mine exploits a mesothermal deposit with a molar Te/Au ratio of 1, containing also lead, molybdenum, bismuth and tungsten. Gold is recovered from the ore by standard cyanidation, however, lately the gold recovery has decreased, likely due to the tellurium content of the ore. The sample used in this work was the cyanidation tailings of this deposit. It was treated in the plant by cyanide heap leaching (0.1 g/L NaCN, pH = 10.3 adjusted with lime). Some gold remained after the cyanidation and it was thought that this gold was associated with tellurium. The objective of this work was the recovery of the remaining gold from the tailings by an alternative process."

"The object of the paper is to discuss the developments in Carbon-In-Pulp (C.I.P.) technology for gold recovery. The CIP process is comprised of four major operations:(a) adsorption of precious metals onto activated carbon;(b) elution (stripping) of precious metals from the loaded carbon;(c) electrowinning of the precious metals from the concentrated eluate;(d) regeneration of the eluted carbon before recycle to the adsorption process.A detailed review of the technological developments in each of the above operations is presented together with a brief theoretical background of the underlying processes. The advantages and disadvantages of the CIP process are discussed in comparison with conventional zinc precipitation. IntroductionThe carbon-in-pulp (CIP) process involves the use of activated carbon for treatment of pulps containing dissolved precious metals, and provide s an alternative to the conventional gold recover y processes using filtration or counter-current decantation in conjunction with the Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation process. The commercial application o f the CIP process in gold processing technology is a fairly recent development and it is of growing importance around the world.The fact that activated carbon ha s the property of adsorbing precious metals from solution was first published in 1847. In the following years , a great deal of work was carried out to develop an over-all recover y process using carbon, but all attempts were uneconomical because the loaded carbon had to be smelted to recover the gold.It was not until 1950 that Zadra, at the United States Bureau of Mines Research Centre in Reno, Nevada, developed a technique for stripping the loaded carbon using sodium sulphite-sodium hydroxide mixtures and then recovering the gold from the stripping solution by electrolysis. However, this process was not effective for stripping silver and further testwork was carried out on alternative stripping techniques. In 1952, Zadra published a paper describing the use of a hot sodium hydroxide- sodium cyanide stripping technique, which was effective in stripping both gold and silver. This paper included a description and flowsheet for the CIP process which is essentially the same as we know it today. This technique was used in the first major CIP plant, constructed and commissioned in 1973 by Hornestake Gold Mining Company. Since then there have been numerous CIP plants built in the U.S A., South Africa and Australia."

The EKATI"" Diamond Mine commenced operation in October 1998. It is operated by BHP Diamonds Inc., which is a part of the Non-Ferrous and Industrial Materials Division of BHP Minerals, a business unit of BHP Company Ltd. of Melbourne, Australia. The EKATI"" Diamond Mine is a joint venture of BHP Diamonds Inc. (51%), Dia Met Minerals Ltd. (29%), Charles E. Fipke (10%) and Dr. Stewart L. Blusson (10%). In December 1993, an office was opened in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories specifically for the then Northwest Territories Diamonds Project (EKATI"" Diamond Mine) development. EKATI"" Diamond Mine is located 300 kilometres northeast of Yellowknife and 200 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle in the Northwest Territories of Canada (Figure 1 ). The site is located in a remote tundra area of continuous permafrost, north of the tree line, which is part of the Canadian Shield. Wekweti (Snare Lake), a Dogrib community approximately 180 kilometres southwest of the project, is the closest neighbour. The mining area and facilities lie within the 10 960 hectares land leases held by the joint venture. The total claim block (core zone and buffer zone joint ventures) covers 344 000 hectares. To date, more than one hundred kimberlite pipes have been identified within the claims. Five of these provide the basis for the present mine plan. Total capital investment in the project is over C$700 million. At full production employment will be about 600, including employees and long-term contractors, with over 33% being Aboriginal from the Northwest Territories.

"The mining of coal in thick and inclined seams is difficult, and there are only a few countries in the world that are really interested in the problems associated with their exploitation. In France a considerable amount of investment has been made in the mechanization of systems appropriate for such conditions.For seams inclined up to 50 degrees, of normal thickness, a new system was introduced in 1967. It consists of a longwall advancing to the rise with walking props, a shearer and hydraulic backfill. During the first two years the panel productivity was an average of 25 TN/MS, and they foresee the possibility of reaching an average of 30 TN/MS.A system for thick beds, both horizontal and inclined, is in p•rocess of being mechanized. In 1969 they started with a method consisting of a longwall in a footwall slice, or sub-level drifts with walking props, and caving and drawing up to a height of 20 m of coal. Recent experiments with a shearer have produced panel productivities between 9 and 11 TN /MS, and there is hope that with experience an average of 16 TN/MS will be obtained.In 1964 a method was initiated for beds inclined from 60 to 90 degrees, based on a mechanical cutter designed by the collieries in Lorraine. An overhand slice of 4.2 m in height is taken with a drum cutter mounted on the end of a boom. Hydraulic fill is placed at the completion of a slice. The face productivity, which has been from 13-20 TN /MS, can be perhaps increased to an average of 22 TN/MS. For those companies with important reserves in inclined and thick seams, these French systems may be worth the trouble of examining in some detail."

Unplanned ore dilution has a direct and large influence on the cost of a stope, and ultimately on the profitability of a mining operation. This paper presents results of a study on the influence of a variety of factors on ore dilution in a blasthole stoping environment. A series of 3-D numerical models were developed and analyzed to examine the effect of mining depth, stope geometry and stope setting within the orezone extraction sequence. To quantify modelled ore dilution from the three-dimensional simulations, the ore Dilution Density (DD) is a term introduced in this study to denote potential hanging-wall overbreak. It was found that hanging-wall overbreak is not significantly influenced by depth alone, and that stopes with large or small axial ratios are more stable than large rectangular stopes. It was also demonstrated that, in addition to stope dimension, the amount of unplanned dilution differed according to stope type. Five stope types were identified, based on their position within a tabular blasthole mining sequence. The methodology presented in this paper can be adopted to develop mine-specific design tools for the estimation of ore dilution associated with a proposed mine design. This can prove extremely helpful in the process of underground mine planning and optimization.

As exploration for new mineral deposits advances farther into the Canadian North, the more the design engineer is faced with the problems of cold weather conditions. This is especially true when designing belt conveyor systems for open-pit operations where the temperature in the winter may go to -40°F or below. Problems with the mechanical components and also with the belting will arise, which in turn may reduce the availability of the system. This paper outlines the problems encountered during cold weather operation and what precautionary measures must be taken into consideration in the design of equipment, as well as in the selection of materials, in order to ensure a system which will maintain production. THE conveying of ore and waste in the pit or to the processing plant poses problems during cold weather, when temperatures may drop to -4o?F or be-low. Troubles with the mechanical components, the belting or the supporting structure may arise, and this, in turn, will reduce the availability of the conveying system.

"Pyroclastic rocks are useful guides to volcanic centers due to the tendency of their fragments to increase in size and volume toward the source vent. The felsic rocks of these centers can be the prime hosts of base metal deposits in the Precambrian Shield; their sub-volcanic equivalents are often the focus of porphyry copper mineralization in the Cordillera. Quantitative mapping of pyroclastic rocks has not yet developed into a routine prospecting tool in Canada, however, possibly due to the cumbersome nature of existing manual techniques and their limitation to structurally simple terrains.A rapid pyroclastic mapping method has been developed whereby the field geologist acquires only a down-plunge outcrop photograph, a record of the fragmental deformation ellipsoid and a record of some descriptive features from each station. Mean fragment size and volume percent are obtained later in the laboratory from a photo-enlargement: by means of a digital analyzer. A computer program uses the strain parameters to 'undeform' the field measurements and obtains genetic information from the descriptive data. Results can be superimposed on a geologic map, with values for each station being represented by a dot of a specified diameter corresponding to the size or volume percentile range to which the value belongs.Control traverses were run over the pyroclastic rocks surrounding the Anderson Lake mine and the Flin Flon South main shaft in northern Manitoba. In both locations, the mapping has delineated regular increasing trends in mean size and volume per cent toward the head frame."

"This paper discusses the aspects of tracking cutters related to the computer-aided design of shearer drums. A comprehensive computer analysis of drum dynamic parameters for multi-tracking tool arrangement is not presently available, as the current computer programs mainly consider the aspects of single tracking. Despite the fact that the single-tracking arrangement is recommended for efficient cutting, some major drum manufacturers have been seen to persistently adhere to multi-tracking, probably due to a lack of information. Further studies in this field are believed to contribute greatly to the current understanding of the computer-aided design of shearer drums.A number of laboratory simulation trials and long-term underground investigations were carried out in detail on tracking cutter arrangement, and an equation required for a computer program was derived. The results obtained from computer assessment of dynamic parameters for drums with multi-tracking arrangement were found to be in accordance with those of the underground trials, indicating the validity of the equations. The procedure adopted for the computer appraisal of the shearer drums designed with a multi-tracking concept, as described in this study, is therefore recommended to be considered in the currently employed computer programs."

Attaining required mechanical properties in welds made using the double submerged arc welding (DSAW) process is difficult, and it is becoming more difficult as the strength level of the base materials continues to increase. Producing weld metal with adequate mechanical properties involves factors that are often overlooked and not taken into consideration. Not least amongst these problems is simply finding information to use in selecting the appropriate flux/wire combination. Most of the available data on flux/wire combinations provided by consumables manufacturers is generated using the multiple pass welding procedures required for classification per specifications such as AWS A5.17 and A5.23. This data really gives no insight into the properties that can be expected in a DSAW application. Also, base plate composition plays a very significant role because of the fact that base plate dilution can be as high as 70% in DSAW welds. This means that if any elements are present in the base metal that are deleterious to mechanical properties, they will also be present in significant quantities in the weld deposit. Some of these elements can decrease toughness and increase hardness (increased hardness is a concern if the pipe is intended for sour service). Some of these problems can be mitigated by proper selection of welding consumables. Selection of proper welding consumables means selecting an electrode that provides the appropriate alloying elements to obtain the desired level of impact toughness while also keeping the hardness within any specified limits. In order to attain the necessary impact toughness, selection of a flux with an appropriate composition (in terms of its basicity and its ability to control the nitrogen content of the weld deposit) is required. As with all welding processes, the mechanical properties of DSAW welds are also highly dependent on the welding procedures. This work clarifies how to select appropriate consumables to meet a given set of requirements, and also how to achieve the optimum mechanical properties from those consumables.

Originally developed as a step change in ultrafine grinding efficiency, the IsaMill? has made inroads into conventional ball mill and tower mill mainstream grinding duties during the last 5 years - beginning with the Anglo Platinum mainstream grinding projects in South Africa. At the 2006 SAG Conference, plant testwork on the incorporation of IsaMill? technology into the McArthur River (Northern Territory, Australia) Pb/Zn primary grinding circuit was reported. The IsaMill? has now become an integral component of that circuit, treating up to 1mm top size feed and directly producing P80 45 µm rougher flotation feed. Two 1.1 MW IsaMills? are now used in this duty contributing to a 27% increase in overall plant throughput and a reduction in rougher feed size distribution. In this paper, we report on the current state of development and performance of the IsaMill? in the primary grinding duty at McArthur River and also consider future directions.

"Unique and difficult minerals processing measurement situations will be described and the application of passive array-based technology for performing these measurements will be illustrated. Examples of these situations include volume flow measurements in froth lines and flotation feed lines with entrained air, slurry lines with magnetite and other magnetic ore, slurry lines with abrasive or corrosive materials, high pressure lines, and slurry and non-slurry lines exhibiting scale buildup. Other situations include measurement of entrained air levels in pipes and in flotation columns. These measurements are achieved through CiDRA’s patented passive sonar array-based technology. This technology performs two independent measurements – flow rate and entrained air amounts. Two hardware implementations of this technology have resulted in a non-intrusive flow and entrained air meter which easily is installed on the outside of the pipe, and a submersible version for entrained air or gas holdup measurements which is used in flotation processes. Recent developments in extending this technology to solve other unique measurement problems such as valve movement confirmation will be covered.INTRODUCTIONThe minerals processing industry faces many unique and challenging process control conditions and environments. In terms of flow measurements, many of these situations are not being properly served by traditional flowmeters such as ultrasonic meters, magmeters, turbine meters, orifice plate meters, vortex flow meters, Coriolis flow meters, and venturi meters. A new class of flowmeters has been developed that solves these unique situations and flow measurement problems. This new class of flowmeter technology utilizes sonar-based processing algorithms and an array of passive sensors to measure not only flow, but also fluid composition. It does so accurately, reliably and without making contact with the fluid. These measurements are performed on practically any type of fluid within virtually any type of pipe.PRINCIPLE OF OPERATIONSonar array-based flowmeters are ideal for tracking and measuring the mean velocities of disturbances traveling in the axial direction of a pipe. These disturbances generally will convect with the flow, propagate in the pipe walls, or propagate in the fluid or slurry. First let us focus on the disturbances that convect with the flow. The disturbances that convect with the flow can be density variations, temperature variations or turbulent eddies. The overwhelming majority of industrial flows will have turbulent eddies convecting with the flow, thus providing an excellent means of measuring the flow rate as described below."

"This paper indicates the extent to which Canadian coal mine operators have taken advantage of developments in the science and technology of coal that would allow them to better satisfy changing market demands through improving the properties of their products. At some mines, no attempt is made to alter the coal from its as-mined condition, but at most mines grading into various size ranges and hand-cleaning of lump sizes is undertaken.Over-all, Canada Jags behind most of the other major world coal producers in the proportion of its coals being processed in wash plants. To some extent, this is due to the fact that a high proportion of the coal production satisfies market demands without such treatment. On the other hand, a few of the coal mines in Canada, which produce about 25 per cent of the nation's total coal output, have in operation some of the most modern coal beneficiating equipment available, including jigs, flotation cells, water cyclones, centrifuges, disc filters and thermal dryers."

Direct observation of charge shape and its motion in industrial mills is not possible; therefore, a combination of analytical and physical studies is used to determine charge trajectory. Software packages, which predict charge motion consider only the outermost layer of charge (single ball) and ignore the charge and the interactions of grinding elements. In the new version of the GMT (Grinding Media Trajectory) software, the effect of liners specification and bulk load on charge shape and trajectory are considered. The charge trajectory was measured in a laboratory mill with the diameter of 100 cm and length of 21.5 cm with the transparent end and compared with that of the old version of GMT. Four types of polyurethane rings were accurately machined to scale down the liners arrangements at two industrial mills. The model mill was operated at 55, 70 and 85% of the critical speed for five levels of mill filling (10, 15, 20, 25% and 30% by volume). The experiments indicated that the end walls effect was negligible for the model mill with the length of 10.8 cm and beyond. The proposed relationships to correct the trajectory and charge shape were validated by using the new liner of the Gol-E-Gohar iron ore company AG mill. The positions of shoulder, toe, toe departure and impact points were predicted with the relative errors of 5, 0.7, 2 and 0.2%, respectively. The GMT software was updated with the new relationships. The results of GMT simulation indicated that when the lifter face angle increased from 7 to 30°, the distance between the charge impact point and the toe decreased from 40.1 to 11.2° for 30% filling. The change in the position of the impact point meant increasing the probability of charge impacting the toe, not the liner which favored more efficient comminution practice.

Mg alloys are one of the promising candidates as a new material for automobile components. However, the application of the Mg alloys is limited due to their poor corrosion resistance. In the authors’ preliminary study, an Al/Mg/Al clad sheet was fabricated by hot extrusion and subsequent hot forging. The clad sheet exhibited a high corrosion resistance and excellent super plasticity. More specifically, the elongation of the clad sheet was as high as 550%.Importantly, despite that the elongation of Al itself was only 40%without cladding with Mg, the ductility of Al was greatly improved in the form of the clad sheet. In the present study, in order to clarify the mechanism of the superplastic deformation of the Al part in the clad sheet, the microstructure evolution of the Al during the tensile de formation is investigated. The tensile tests were conducted at a temperature of 573 K and at a strain rateof1.0×10-3s-1. The Al exhibited fiber-type texture at the beginning of the tensile deformation, and brass-type texture after the elongation of 50%.INTRODUCTIONMg alloys have been gaining attention because of their excellent properties e.g. light weight, good recyclability and high electromagnetic shielding. However, their practical applications have been limited due to their poor corrosion resistance. In the authors’ previous study, in order to solve this problem, Al coating on Mg alloy by hot extrusion has been proposed, and the Al-coated Mg alloy plate was fabricated(Tokunaga, Matsuura, &Ohno,2012). The plate was hot-rolled and an Al/Mg/Al clad sheet was fabricated. No cracks or debondings were observed at the Al/Mg interface. The sheet exhibited a high corrosion resistance in a comparable level as pure Al. Also, the sheet exhibited a large and uniform elongation of 550%in a tensile test at a temperature of 573 K and at a strain rate of 1.0×10-3s-1without any breakings or debondings of the Al part(Tokunaga, Matsuura, &Ohno,2014).Mg alloys have been known to exhibit a superplastic characteristic when the grain size is small. However, it is known that the pure Al does not generally exhibit the super plasticity. As mentioned above, the Al-coated Mg alloy sheet exhibited 550% of elongation in the authors’ previous study (Tokunagaet al., 2014). However, the pure Al itself showed only 40% of elongation, while the Mg alloy itself exhibited 800% of elongation. Thus, it has been demonstrated that the pure Al was super plastically elongated when it was bonded with the Mg alloy. Generally, deformation mechanism of the super plasticity of the Mg alloy is known as a grain boundary sliding. On the other hand, the mechanism of the superplastic elongation of the pure Al is still unclear. The purpose of the present study is investigation of the deformation behavior of the Al part in the Al/Mg/Al clad sheet during tensile de formation."
