"In today's marketplace, heavy competition between materials is the norm. This is particularly true f or the base metals, which are being increasingly challenged by new or improved materials in all traditional applications. Current usage of base metals results from a combination of a metal's intrinsic properties, and technology. The future of the base metal industry rests with innovative, high-quality product development, its ability to take advantage of the results of worldwide, massive material R&D investments, and with the dynamism and effectiveness of its market development programs.The ZA casting alloys program is an illustration of the zinc industry’s efforts to protect and expand its market position in the casting field through state-of -the-art technological developments. The market potential f or these advanced engineering alloys is substantial, and their impact on traditional zinc die casting alloy consumption is particuarly important. The ZA alloys, in offering increased performance through zinc castings produced at low cost and by a wide range of moulding processes, have unlocked a multitude of new end-use applications.Following a review of the development of ZA alloys, of their key properties and of their performance characteristics, the numerous challenges that the alloys present to the zinc industry and to the R&D community are discussed.IntroductionZinc is anodic to steel and has a low, uniform rat e of corrosion; it has a low melting point, can be cast with precision , and is readily finished. In addition to its use in protecting steel and in the production of a wide range of castings, zinc is employed : (1) to produce brass, high-strength aluminum alloys and magnesium die casting alloys, (2) in the wrought state for coinage and in building products, particularly as roofing materials , and (3) as an oxide, in the rubber industry, in ceramics, glass, cosmetics, pharmaceutical products and as the starting materials for many chemicals.Zinc die castings are produced with accuracy at high speed, at low cost, are easily finished and have excel1ent mechnical properties . Car fuel economy, changes in automobile styling, competition from other materials, increased sophistication of design and miniaturization have all led to a dramatic change in the volume of zinc consumed for die-casting applications. This has been particularly notable in the United States. Throughout the 19505 and the I960s, casting was the fastest growing major use of zinc; it was firmly established, accounting for 35% of the total zinc consumption(1), By 1983, the volume of zinc being purchased for casting applications had dropped to less than 20% of all zinc consumed in the United States. In the western world(2), consumption for zinc casting application s is currently at about 15%; being nearly equal to the zinc consumed by the brass industry. Coating applications dominate with a consumption of more than 40% of the total market."

Lost time and services caused by electrical equipment breakdown or cable faults can often be substantially reduced by the use of direct-current high-voltage testing as a maintenance tool. This paper discusses the relative merits of alternating-current versus direct-current testing, pointing out the advantages in size and cost of equipment and more definitive results achieved through the use of D.C. General principles of direct-current high-volt-age testing, types of testing, methods of performing the actual test and interpreting the results are explained. ?The value of insulation resistance measurements and their relationship to high-voltage testing is discussed. Pinpointing the physical location of a cable defect using a fault locator or thumper is described. Reference is made to several organizations that have effected considerable savings with high-voltage test programs. A new pyrometallurgical process is proposed for cleaning complex copper matte and for recovering copper from copper scrap containing lead. In the process, a given amount of pig iron is added to the complex material under a reducing condition to produce two or three liquid phases at the equilibrium, depending on the content of sulfur in system, of copper-rich and iron-rich alloys, and matte, respectively. The novel process is proposed based on the experimental results obtained by performing laboratory scale tests in an electrical furnace at 1473 K followed by a quenching method on the final stage. The samples obtained from the experiments were analyzed by using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), Inductively Couple Plasma (ICP) and Carbon Infrared Spectrometry (CIS) techniques. The results were discussed on the basis of the distribution of lead as impurity in the miscibility gap where equilibrated phases coexist. According to the mass balance calculations, the elimination of lead into the iron-rich alloy phase as a harmless and smaller deposit might be feasible and the process proposed for cleaning the complex matte would be promising.

"INTRODUCTIONWhile this paper deals specifically with potential coal use at the Cold Lake Project of Esso Resources Canada Limited, a majority of the technical aspects of coal conversion could apply to any oil field and industrial boilers or stearn generators. In 1962, Imperial Oil Limited's production arm (the forerunner of Esso Resources), began examining methods of extracting bitumen from a 50 m thick layer of oil sand buried 450 m below the surface in the Cold Lake area. Almost two decades of research followed to develop an in situ oil sands recovery technology that made commercial production feasible.A $13 billion mega project that would have produced 22 000 m3/d (141 000 barrels/day) of synthetic crude oil (160 000 bpd of bitumen) was shelved in 1981, and ultimately replaced by a phased development strategy, involving smaller production units, to bring blended bitumen production on stream as markets and prices permit.The first two phases came into production in 1985. There are currently a total of six phases in production with four more in the construction stage. Each phase has 130to 140production wells (initially) and a central plant with water treatment, crude treatment and stearn generating facilities capable of producing 150 m3/d (9500 bpd of raw bitumen). The stearn generation section for each phase consists of three 180millionBtulhour oil fieldsteam generators.In its natural state, the bitumen is too thick to be recovered using conventional oil recovery techniques. At the Cold Lake Project, bitumen is recovered by a method called cyclic stearn stimulation. Water is pumped to the central plant where it is treated and heated to produce high pressure, high temperature steam. During the steam cycle, this steam is transported in insulated pipelines to the wells for injection into the oil sand formation. This cycle lasts from 30 to 50 days, heating the formation and causing the bitumen to flow. Following an initial flowback period, a surface based artificial lift system pumps the heated liquid bitumen, mixed with water and gas, out of the well and back to the central plant. The water and gas are separated from the bitumen, with the gas being used to provide some of the fuel for the stearn generators and the water being treated and recycled. Approximately 5% of the water cannot be recycled and is disposed of by injection into deep formations . The bitumen is blended with a diluent and shipped by pipeline to market."

"The Baker Mine used a 100-ton per day conventional cyanide leach mill located in northern British Columbia. A production decision was made in early 1980 and the mill was on fine in April 1981.Ore reserves had been estimated at 100,000 Ions averaging 0.9 oz gold per ton and 18 oz silver per ton . Mineralization consists of electrum (Au/Ag) and acanthite (Ag2S).This paper will review plant design and focus on some problems associated with start-up and early operation with the intention of assisting other mine operators by indicating potential problem areas.IntroductionThis paper will discuss operating strategies employed at Baker which improved over-all mill performance. Also included are some ideas which could be steps toward a more efficient operation in a similar setting.Actual dore production by mine life was 37,606 oz gold and 742,117 oz silver.Figure 1 illustrates the relative stability attained over the mine life. Metal recoveries for gold and silver were 92% and 85% respectively.Safety at Baker was of prime importance because of its remote location. Baker received the Mine Safety Association ""Small Mines Award "" in two of its three operating years. At shutdown in late 1983 the mill had operated for over 850 days without a lost-time accident."

"The main components of a ""PC” -based mineral inventory system are described in a sequence common to many real reserve/ resource estimation projects and in the practical context of problems and decision-making typically encountered in such studies. Some components are designed particuarly to improve the geostatistical instructional capability of the package. An important part of this approach involves the use of widely available software for data manipulation and evaluation in the design of a mineral inventory study progressing to mine design and feasibility. A variety of more or- less fixed routines written in high level languages provide acceptable computational speeds on a personal computer. These critical segments are linked by simple, short, compiled Basic programs easily adjustable to various data configurations and needs. IntroductionGeostatistical mineral inventory estimation has progressed greatly since its slow dissemination during the 1960s. The mining industry generally has accepted the benefits of the technique, notably the quantification of grade and geology, an indication of error in grade estimation, and of the mined volume / grade variance relationship (Clark, 1979, Isaacs and Srivastava, 1989).Acceptance has been slowed, first by complexities of geostatistical theory and second by a bewildering variety of computer systems and applications programs. Continuing improvements in education will facilitate a better understanding of the underlying theory.The purpose of this paper is to describe, in a practical context, the development of a geostatistical-based approach to reserve/resource estimation. The approach integrates various existing commercial software packages with a wide selection of programs developed by the authors for personal computers which estimate mineral inventories and educate users in the techniques applied; that is, the QMIN system.It is hoped that the approach presented here will convince mining and geological engineers concerned with resource estimation, of the soundness of geostatistical methods and its broad potential to their problems."

Synvolcanic, layered gabbro-anorthosite sills at Rainy Lake, Northwestern Ontario, reflect a combination of igneous processes including fractional crystallization, wall rock assimilation and possibly liquid immiscibility. Chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite mineralization at the base of the Grassy Portage intrusion accumulated by crystallization of a sulphide liquid during cooling. Upward enrichment of Fe and Ti in this intrusion and also in the Bad Vermilion Lake anorthosite complex culminated with the crystallization of lenses of disseminated to massive magnetite+ apatite+ ilmenite+ rutile. Regional low to medium grade metamorphism and accompanying deformation resulted in recrystallization and local remobilization of ore minerals.

The measures were set out in a Notice of Ways and Means Motion; draft legislation relating to preferred shares, research and development expenditures; and draft regulations regarding capital cost allowance, certified films, flow-through shares, and the resource sector. The reaction of the government to the recommendations made by the Finance and Economic Affairs Committee Report on Tax Reform (the Blenkarn Committee), the Report of the Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce and through consultations with interested groups and organizations, business, labour and individual Canadians is set out in a booklet of supplementary information.The basic features of the reformed income tax system set out in the White Paper remain. However, a number of significant changes have been incorporated in the Notice of Ways and Means Motion and other material. The following comments address those area s where changes have been made to the original White Paper proposals."

"A mineral processing investigation to recover chromite was performed at Lakefield Research, under the guidance of CANMET personnel, on a 70 tonne ore sample from the Bird River deposit in Manitoba. In the laboratory phase a flowsheet was developed which involved grinding, gravity separation and flotation. The gravity concentrates were upgraded by magnetic separation and the flotation concentrates by gravity concentration. Pre-concentration by electronic ore sorting, magnetic separation and heavy media separation also was examined.The developed flowsheet was applied on a pilot-plant scale in the second phase of the testwork to the ore as received, and to ore pre-concentrated by electronic ore sorting and magnetic separation. Ore pre-concentrated by heavy-media separation was treated on a laboratory scale based on the pilot-plant flowsheet.Processing the are as received resulted in 77% recovery of chromite in a concentrate analyzing 30% Cr20 J; processing are pre-concentrated by electronic are sorting resulted in 64% recovery of chromite in a concentrate analyzing 30.5% Cr20J.IntroductionA five-year mineral development sub-agreement was signed between the federal government and the province of Manitoba in 1984. Basically, the agreement covers three sectors: Sector A, geoscience; Sector B, mining and minerals technology research; and Sector C, development studies.Project selection involved input from industry, federal and provincial representatives. In the case of industrial mineral s, the selection was initiated at a meeting held at the offices of the Department of Mines and Energy, Winnipeg, Manitoba, in October 1985. One such project was the evaluation of the chromite ore deposits at Bird River, Manitoba."

"Operator competency is an important factor in the safe and successful operation of today’s complex processes. Competent process unit operators deliver superior performance and results. In greenfield projects, operator competency is particularly critical, as the lack of specific operations experience must be offset with proven practical knowledge and skills to avoid mistakes that can cost millions in terms of start-up delays, production losses and equipment damage. It is, therefore, important to know precisely what competencies are required for a project or site, and what any gaps in operator competency need to be addressed and improved. The success of plant commissioning, start-up and sustainable operations is directly tied to operator competency. The significant investments required for new projects, the exploitation of more challenging ore bodies, and the increasing complexity of plant operations have placed renewed emphasis on the need for competent operators. Furthermore, many large capital projects are being developed in remote regions, often with ties to the delivery of social benefits for the local population in terms of jobs, training and other development opportunities. While automation and processing technologies have helped do more with less, indicators now point to a bottleneck in human performance limiting operational results.Automation industry development in managing abnormal situations, including solutions for simulation and operator training, has produced applications to provide customized and flexible training methods. This paper will discuss tools to automate the operator competency process in order to guide trainers to effectively teach, measure, control, provide feedback, and monitor operator skills. Today’s competency management solutions can be effectively applied throughout the course of an operator’s professional life, as a guide to hiring new operators, for developing competencies to support operations, and also to develop and refine best practices and share lessons learned."

"While it might seem like heresy to suggest that ""taxation"" can be a source of financing, never the less some generous tax rules can considerably enhance the tax savings pertaining to a particular expenditure or project. A basic tax knowledge, and careful tax planning, can optimize government participation in a project. INTRODUCTIONIn trying to identify sources of financing for a project, ""government"" as a source of funding is normally thought of in terms of government grants, loan guarantees, interest rate buy downs, property tax waivers, hydro subsidies, and so on. Generally, such concessions are somewhat difficult to obtain, especially in the current period of apparent fiscal restraint. One source of government funding which should not be overlooked is the income tax regime, and, at the provincial level, the various provincial mining tax regimes.While the taxpayer would not normally view a tax system as a potential source of government financing, nevertheless various federal and provincial rules applicable to the mining industry can offer attractive tax deductions - and tax savings - with respect to particular expenditures. In fact, it is not unusual for a civil servant to refer to a tax deduction as a tax ""subsidy"". For example, in the right circumstances, the cost of a smelter expansion in New Brunswick would cost the operator only 31 cents on the dollar, with the federal and provincial governments paying for the other 69 cents by foregoing tax revenues (Table I). In a sense, such tax savings could be compared to a government grant equal to 69% of project costs. Of course, not every project expenditure will generate that degree of government funding. The fact of the matter is that the percentages of tax savings attached to different expenditures cover a wide range, depending on a complex mix of factors. The point to understand is that the tax rules can offer some valuable savings, even after tax reform, and that a basic knowledge of the tax rules can yield some fruitful rewards."

"The concept of geometallurgy has been extensively mentioned and used in the mining industry in the past years. However, each mining firm has a different understanding of what geometallurgy means, and its actual value varies significantly from site to site. Even in the case of properly constructed geometallurgical models, it is fairly common to observe a sub-utilization of the model in the actual operation, because of its low production forecasting capability on the short term. This disconnect between the geometallurgical model and operations is typically caused by a lack of tuning between the original model and the actual plant operation. Also, the absence of procedures and other standards for reconciliation, affects the confidence and the predictive quality of the model. The geometallurgical model should consist of three different levels: (I) adequate capture of information, (II) data analysis and modelling, and (III) development of the block model. Once the geometallurgical in-situ model is finalized, a process model should be developed of the plant at industrial scale, in order to scale up the in-situ geometallurgical parameters from their base or standard condition, to the actual operating reality of the plant. Finally, the stage of reconciliation will close this process, assuring that any deviation between the geometallurgical model and the actual plant operation is not due to lack of tuning, but due to operational issues such as unattended maintenance requirements or poor process control in the operation. The methodology as described in this paper has been applied at several large mining sites in Chile. The paper presents the characteristics of the proposed methodology, and quantitatively describes its benefits with examples from actual operations.INTRODUCTIONIt probably is fair to say that geometallurgy became widely used in greenfield projects in the Andes region during the mining boom of the 90’s, when massive orebodies were studied and developed, and upfront metallurgical characterisation proved its use for accurate economic evaluation including estimates of plant throughput, energy consumption, final product quality and overall recovery. A few examples of such greenfield studies for concentrator plants in the 90’s are Minera Los Pelambres (Antofagasta Minerals, Chile), Minera Escondida, Laguna Seca (BHP Billiton, Chile), and Rio Blanco (then Montterrico Metals, Peru). Large size hydrometallurgical operations such as Cerro Colorado, Quebrada Blanca and Lomas Bayas (all in Chile), also recognised early on the importance and value of relating ore mineralogy, geological characterisation and metallurgical behaviour."

"The gas sorption and emission characteristic of coals are important to the planning and conduct of mining operations. Methane drainage from coal strata can also provide a supply of fuel in certain circumstances. Gas emissions have also created hazards during the handling and transport of coals and the release of gas also appears to be related to the yield of fine sizes during mining and processing operations.This paper summarizes studies at the University of Alberta on the permeability and gas emission of certain bituminous coals. Permeability of 'solid' samples was found to be drastically reduced by confining pressure. An emission index, .P, which has been related to outbursting behaviour of coals, has also been related to the proportion of fine s in cleaning plants. Gas sorption isotherms are dependent on temperature, moisture content, the gas involved and the type of coal and can be approximately expressed by the Langmuir or the Freundlich equations. Sorption values in sections taken across a given seam were similar but considerable differences were found in . P indices in the different coal layers of a seam.IntroductionThe emission of gases, especially of methane, from coal has been a subject of great interest (and sometimes a matter of life and death), to those who dig and handle coal since it was first mined from underground pit s. Many studies and investigations have been carried out on gas occurrences and emissions but our knowledge of the precise mechanisms of gas sorption, desorption and flow from coal is still incomplete. "A simulation study of the fill factor of a drum mill was conducted using two types of grinding media: balls and tetraballpebs. Each medium was composed of equal number of grinding bodies having equal weight but different shape. The difference was in the density of the two grinding media.Standard spherical grinding bodies (balls), which were used in practice, and equivalent (by weight) grinding bodies in the shape of spheroidal tetrahedrons (tetraballpebs) were studied. The simulation was conducted in a module of a 1.2 m diameter drum mill, whose length exceeded twice the diameter of the corresponding grinding body. The grinding balls had a few percent (3 to 6) higher fill factor than the grinding tetraballpebs in the same shell.Vertical sections of the grinding medium were taken across the studied shell module along its axis. They showed the location of each grinding body in the fill volume. Defects in the packing of the grinding bodies and the contacts between them and with the inner surface of the shell were also show. Differences in the contact points of the balls and the tetraballpebs were noted. For the tetraballpebs, we observed contacts both between the spherical surfaces and with the edges and vertices of the grinding bodies.The topography of the grinding media is shown visually.INTRODUCTIONThe grinding balls have been studied extensively. It is the traditional grinding medium in ore processing industry. The parameter characterising the grinding medium is its density. It is the mass of the grinding medium per unit of volume. The parameter may have a range of values. It depends on:• The physical properties of the material they are made of;• The shape of the grinding body;• The dimensions of the body;• Size distribution of the grinding bodies in the grinding media.In comminution, the fill factor of the mill shell is the process parameter that is representative of the grinding medium. Some publications have indicated the disadvantages of ball grinding. For example, Wu, Xiang, Glen, and Duan (2008) note in the analysis of the mechanism of grinding that the balls are not the best grinding media and disadvantages include among others:• Easy over-grinding resulting from the point contact between the balls;• Attrition surface is the smallest in the grinding media;• Poor selective exposure of minerals resulting from the accidental and often significantly more powerful impact on the feed;• The grinding efficiency drops as the fineness of grind is increased;In the Handbook of mineral processing, Polkin (1950) noted that the shape of the grinding bodies determines the volume of the void spaces therein and therefore the shape affects the grinding efficiency per unit of volume of the grinding medium."

"In order to determine its capabilities and to aid in the interpretation of fie ld results, a scale model study and field tests were carried out on the Crone borehole pulse electromagnetic (PEM) system. The model results indicate that if a borehole passes in the vicinity of a tabular conductive body, the system will not only detect the presence of the body, but will also return information as to its conductivity-thickness product, size, altitude and position.The effect of variation of these electromagnetic and geometric factors on the shape of the response curve from a borehole PEM survey is displayed by a number of suites of scale-model response curves. These model curves can be used directly as type curves in the interpretation of field results. Field tests of a prototype PEM system provide a check on the scale-model results and also summarize the procedure of interpreting field data using the model type curves.The borehole pulse EM system can be effectively used as a follow-up geophysical instrument for locating and delineating known conductive bodies. It can also be profitably utilized as a primary geophysical exploration tool in areas of deep mineralization below the depth limit of conventional airborne and ground geophysical systems. The probed area of a diamond drill hole in these cases is increased from a 1- inch drill core to a zone extending hundreds of feet from the hole."

"This paper describes the development of a dynamic model for a full- scale (64 tonnes/hr) grinding circuit consisting of an open-circuit rod mill feeding a ball mill operating in closed circuit. The object of constructing such a model is to investigate the static and dynamic behaviour of potential control schemes. Model selection, data processing and parameter estimation are discussed, and static and dynamic results of simulations are presented. Conclusions are drawn with regard to the adequacy of the model for such studies, and likely limitations on control of such circuits.IntroductionThe model developed here is intended to represent the grinding behaviour of the grinding circuit at the Lake Dufault division of Falconbridge Copper Mines Ltd. This circuit has been fully described elsewhere. At the time of the work described, the ball mill discharge was fed to a four-cell flotation bank , the tailings of which are combined with the rod mill discharge in the cyclone feed pump sump. As the emphasis in this study is on grinding behaviour, and as only I per cent of cyclone feed material is removed in these cells, no attempt has been made to include flotation behaviour in the simulation. One effect of the presence of flotation cells in the grinding circuit is, however, to necessitate somewhat finer grinding than might otherwise be needed: this will have effects on mill parameters.The paper is organized as follows. First the selection of models is discussed, paying particular attention to the problem of selecting simple, yet adequate, flow models for the mills. Then data gathering is described. The method of deriving mill model parameters is explained, and the results presented. Mass balancing of cyclone data and the determination of cyclone model parameters are described. The linking of the models into a full simulation is outlined, and sta tic and dynamic results presented. Finally, the results are discussed and conclusions drawn ."

"Full-scale sections of three different types of Grade 483 line pipe have been evaluated extensively. The variations in chemical composition, optical microstructure, tensile properties, hardness and Charpy impact toughness with specimen orientation and location were determined. Significant variations in several properties, notably Charpy shelf energy, impact transition temperature, inclusion content and ferrite grain size, were observed for different locations in the pipes. The results indicate that current specifications call for test samples for the most conservative locations, except for impact tests. Minimum Charpy impact values generally occur at the II2-width location, which may be a more appropriate specified test location than the present I/4-width location. The anisotropy of impact toughness, and the importance of low sulphur content and inclusion shape control for adequate toughness in the transverse/rolling-direction orientation were demonstrated. The orientation of impact specimens is critical for spiral-weld pipe, and the current specification test is non-conservative in that it can give results which are two to three times higher than the minimum value for the steel.IntroductionThis report presents the results of an extensive metallurgical evaluation of three different Grade 483 line-pipe steels. For several years, the GDD SSW EM Probe is being used in nickel?s mines in Canada and Brazil to define ore limits, reduce dilution and predict nickel grades. It is used with success to test most if not all percussion blast holes at all Falconbridge Mines in Sudbury and Raglan and all Inco?s Thompson mines. However, after testing the SSW Probe in other metal mines, we realized that EM conductivity does not define ore limits by testing blast holes for copper, zinc or gold. For non-conductive ores, no instrumentation is yet available on the market to reduce dilution, by outlining quickly and inexpensively the real shape of an orebody. To that effect, Instrumentation GDD Inc has developed a new revolutionary photonic probe that will make the reduction of dilution possible by probing blast holes. Once surveyed with the probe, a computer draws graphs of the ore grade as a function of depth for each blast hole. A contribution by Canada Economic Development made possible the development of this new technology. Canmet and Soredem also cautioned this technology developed by Instrumentation GDD Inc. This new photonic probe will allow: 1) to better understand the shape of the orebody 2) to raise the grade of the ore fed to the mill 3) a more complete extraction of the ore 4) to raise the competitiveness of mines
