"For a mine section comprising 100 different stoping activities, there are ~10158 different possible stoping sequences to explore in the mine schedule optimization search and this figure is indicative of the challenge posed in maximising profitability through mine schedule optimization. Any viable excavation timetable must satisfy all conditions that will constrain feasible sequences. In general, consideration of additional constraint will tend to reduce profitability. Geomechanical constraints on mine schedules, introduced with the aim of avoiding excavation instabilities, can be established for underground mine schedule optimization processes but, currently, this is done only rather crudely; precedence relations between excavation activities (stoping or development) are encoded to produce particular stope sequence patterns (e.g. ‘chevron’ or pyramidal sequences).The work reported aimed to investigate automated processes for formulation of such geomechanical constraints. The timetable optimization approach to the problem precipitated a fresh look at time dependent, and excavation sequence dependent, deformation. Abundant evidence emerged that supported the notion that any methodology developed that failed to account for such time and sequence dependencies was itself bound to failure. Yet, it was also recognised that any deviation at all from an assumption of linear elasticity for geomechanical numerical modeling, adopted to inform geomechanical constraint formulation, would rapidly lead to impractical levels of computational effort.Thus the approach presented here represents a compromise: the elastic stress fields induced by individual mining activities are computed for each activity, independently considered within a computational domain identical to that of all other activities. These are stored in a database. Instability risk for a specific sequence of mine activities can be assessed through superimposition of stress fields drawn from the pre-computed database. Time stamps allocated to events corresponding to the excavation processes permit the conversion of the sequence of elastic stress fields into a time table of stress fields. For specific locations within the computational domain, the aggregate effect of the sequence of mine activities leads to stress-time histories having a castellated appearance, a result of the near instantaneous response of an elastic medium to the excavation perturbations. Time dependent deformation responses are crudely allowed for through the re-profiling these castellated histories through graphical construction of curved responses, where the curve gradients are related to a viscous parameter. Such curves form the basis for a geomechanical constraint formulation to be adopted for mine schedule optimization."

"There are many physical and operational obstacles in pipelines that make the passage of inspection robots impossible including:•,Small radius bends•,Low operating pressure•,Plug valves•,Large changes in pipe size•,No permanent access to the pipeline.The inspection of unpiggable pipelines requires the marriage of a highly agile robotic platform with NDE sensor technology operating as an integrated system. Foster-Miller and GE/PII are developing a robot that is essentially a battery powered, train-like platform. Both front and rear tractors propel the train in either the downstream or upstream direction. Like a train, the platform includes additional ""cars"" to carry the required payloads. The cars are used for various purposes including the NDE sensor module(s), the power supply, and data acquisition/storage components. The robot is designed with a slender aspect ratio and the ability to change shape as required by the physical obstacle presenting itself. The MFL sensor module must also morph itself through the physical obstacles, and thus, will require some level of segmentation. The segmented MFL magnetizers and transformable sensor module represent a major advance in the science of sensor technology and pipeline inspection."

Since milling began in 1909, the PJV Dome mill has been expanded several times, to the current throughput of 11,500 tonnes per day. PJV recovers free gold using crushing and grinding followed by gravity concentration. The remaining gold in the gravity tails is recovered by cyanide leaching followed by Carbon-In -Pulp processing. Prior to 1993, cyanide tailings were impounded in the tailings pond where cyanide was allowed to degrade naturally. Effluent was discharged seasonally during the summer and early autumn to maintain the water balance. In 1993, an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) was designed and constructed for the purpose of removing dissolved metals and suspended solids. In 1997, an INCO SO2/Air cyanide destruction process was added to the ETP. Even though the ETP was successful in meeting the cyanide, metals and total suspended solids (TSS) discharge limits, often the treated effluent failed to pass toxicity tests. Following successful laboratory and plant scale testing, the addition of the chelant EDTA (ethylene diamine-tetra-acetic-acid) was commenced in the 1999 operating season. To date, discharged effluent has passed all toxicity tests. This paper describes the evolution of the ETP from its early conception to the various phases of upgrade needed to meet the MISA discharge limits.

Poor visibility of powered industrial vehicles, such as forklifts, used in industry is often the cause of accidents that include pedestrians. Current standards allow up to 20 % non-visible regions for forklifts where measurement of these regions is performed by using lamps. A collaboration of research organizations, including National Institute of Standards and Technology, Georgia Institute of Technology (NIST), and Direct Dimensions, has been evaluating advanced methods for measuring a forklift operator?s visibility. These methods can potentially improve visibility standards. They can also help forklift and sensor manufacturers to determine (1) how visibility-assist sensors and algorithms can be designed and (2) where sensors can be mounted on forklifts. This paper includes explanation of visibility measurement experiments performed and results, associated language suggested to standards organizations, and a prototype design for measuring the visibility of forklifts automatically.

"The Copra massive sulphide deposit occurs as a continuous slab of ore dipping at approximately 40 degrees within a sericite schist formation. The orebody has been delineated over a distance of more than 5,000 feet down dip. This paper is mainly concerned with the mining procedure, and particular reference will be made to the use of steel mill holes and hydraulic roof supports. The gravel backfill line, which is operated both by gravity and hydraulically, is described. The paper mentions some of the operational problems, discusses the feasibility of longwall mining and presents the information obtained from stope testing."

ABSTRACT This paper explores passive seismic measurement as an alternative, nonintrusive approach to conducting annual brake testing on surface mine sites. Dictated by the test site location, this evaluation adhered to the brake testing procedure as per British Columbia occupational health and safety regulations. Results showed excellent correlation to those reported via conventional practice: Comparing stopping distance, time, and velocity for the proposed instantaneous passive seismic versus conventional approaches, less than a 0.5% variance was evident. A viable alternative, the passive seismic approach, allowed an entire fleet of trucks to be sequentially evaluated for annual brake testing without disrupting operations by installing mechanical testing equipment.

"Dialkyl dithiophosphinates are a unique class of collectors used in the flotation processing of Cu- Au, complex polymetallic, and precious metal ores. They are known to exhibit higher selectivity and flotation rates for Cu sulfides, galena, and precious metal values in the presence of other gangue sulfides, than the traditionally used collectors such as dialkyl dithiophosphates and xanthates. They also have an attractive HSE profile. Historically, for most reagents used in flotation, practical methods of chemical usage have preceded detailed scientific understanding of how they work; this applies also to dithiophosphinates. Recently, however, the research community has shown significant interest in this chemistry, and numerous studies have been conducted to understand the fundamentals of interactions of dithiophosphinates with several base metal sulfides and precious metals. A critical overview of fundamental studies, laboratory ore flotation, and plant practice of dithiophosphinates is given in this paper. The findings from these studies are rationalized by drawing on concepts and insights from coordination chemistry. A comparison between the interactions of dithiophosphinates and dithiophosphate analogues with various minerals and metals is also made throughout. We believe that such a critical analysis/overview will be invaluable in identifying gaps in knowledge regarding this important set of compounds, which in turn may provide a basis for the design of studies that can advance understanding of their flotation performance. INTRODUCTIONDialkyl dithiophosphinates are an important member of the class of thiophosphorus compounds that are widely used in flotation beneficiation of base metal sulfide and precious metals ores. Ore flotation studies and plant practice experience have demonstrated their unique properties compared to the traditionally used sulfide collectors such as dialkyl dithiophosphates (their closest analogues) and xanthates. The predominant dialkyl dithiophosphinate used in the industry today is sodium diisobutyl dithiophosphinate (a.k.a. DIBDTPi; AEROPHINE® 3418A1 introduced by American Cyanamid in the late 1970s; Figure 1). The widest application of AEROPHINE 3418A is found in complex polymetallic ores of Cu-Pb-Zn-Ag, Pb-Zn-Ag, and Cu-Zn where it has demonstrated improved recoveries (and flotation rates) of sulfide minerals of Cu, Pb and Ag and selectivity against sphalerite, iron sulfides, and penalty elements (Mingione, 1991). More recently, it has also been used as a collector in the processing of Cu, Cu-Ni, and Ni ores (Guitard et al., 2015) and Cu-Au ores (Dunne, 2005). In general, it is considered to possess the collecting power of xanthates together with the selectivity (against pyrite) of dithiophosphates (Hope et al., 2003a, 2003b), while requiring lower dosages than those reagents (Guitard et al., 2015). AEROPHINE® 3418A has also found an important place in several targeted formulations to improve flotation performance. Other benefits of this reagent include higher flotation rates, having a better HSE (health, safety and environmental) profile2 compared to xanthate, and exhibiting resistance to hydrolysis and oxidation (Guitard et al., 2015). Compared to diisobutyl dithiophosphate (DIBDTP), which is known to contribute significantly to frothing (often leading to over-frothing), AEROPHINE® 3418A is observed to be froth neutral (i.e. it does not alter the existing froth characteristics). As is the case for other flotation reagents, the design and application of AEROPHINE® 3418A has preceded understanding of its behavior at a fundamental level. Open stope design depends on the ore body geometry, loading conditions and rock mass properties to estimate stope dilution and ground support requirements. Rock mass conditions for design primarily rely upon estimates of well established rock classification systems. Many sources of data exist for obtaining estimates for these rock mass classification values which include core logging, geotechnical mapping, geological mapping as well as linking one classification system to another through the use of empirically derived equations. The extent of mapping coverage can also vary significantly based on the data collection technique. This paper proposes an approach where individual components of rock mass classification systems are collected by the different available data collection techniques. Data from different rock types are also considered separately based on their alteration characteristics and general observation products. Data from the Cameco Corporation Eagle Point Mine is presented and an approach is outlined for obtaining average representative classification values for stope hanging wall characterization. The effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated through the analysis of a data base of hanging wall dilution information.

The mining industry is facing declining feed grades which require the mining and processing of larger volumes of material per tonne of product. Pre-concentration aims to remove barren material at as coarse a particle size and as early in the process as possible to reduce processing costs, energy consumption, water losses, and greenhouse gas emissions while increasing production and profitability. This may be achieved using bulk ore sorting—the separation of barren gangue from a fully loaded conveyor belt based on the grade as measured or inferred from a sensor. This paper evaluates the technical and economic viability of bulk ore sorting for the PanAust Phu Kham copper deposit in Lao PDR. Bulk ore sorting technology is described briefly along with discussion of appropriate sensor and diversion systems for the Phu Kham operation. To evaluate the economic implications, the actual mined material and costs from 2014 were used as the base-case. Sampling data was not available; therefore, the ore grade variability that would feed a bulk ore sorter was estimated using geo-statistical tools based on mine grade control data. The sorter performance when treating this material was simulated considering the accuracy of the sensor measurement and errors associated with material diversion. The impact on inferred cash flow was estimated for several different scenarios considering the additional costs for sorter operation and reject handling. The evaluation demonstrated that bulk ore sorting at Phu Kham has the potential to increase the amount of metal in product and/or reduce processing plant throughput (and costs) to improve the annual inferred cash flow for the conditions investigated. The sorter is the gatekeeper – only material above the cut-off grade (value-adding) reports to the processing plant; no waste dilutes the feed. Likewise, above cutoff grade material is not lost to waste; preventing lost revenue.

THE Dome ore-bodies are more or less isolated and are mined. by shrinkage stoping. An interwoven system of veins is mined at Hollinger '.1.nd requires close filling. Deep mining is the problem at McIntyre. Dome ore contains a large amount of free gold, which is recovered on blankets. An all-cyanide flow-sheet is \lSed in the Hollinger mill. Flotation concentration is an important feature of McIntyre mill operation. Therefore, these three mines afford an unusual opportunity to compare gold mining and milling methods. The purpose of this paper is to describe the conditions existing at the Dome, Hollinger, and McIntyre mines and to outline the mining and milling practice at each property. Figures 3, 4, 5, and 7 are reproduced from the Canadian Mining ]011rna/, September, 1935 (Young, A. W., Mining at Hollinger), and Figures 8 to 11 from the Engineering and Mining Journal, November, 1933 (Keeley, D. E., Development and Mining at McIntyre). The photographs (Figures 6, 12, and 13) are by The Canadian Government Motion Picture Bureau. The All-Vanadium Redox Flow Battery that was pioneered and has been developed at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney since the mid-1980s is currently regarded as one of the most attractive energy storage systems for large-scale implementation in a wide range of grid-connected and offgrid applications. Several companies are now manufacturing and installing MW-scale VFBs in applications ranging from renewable energy storage, load-levelling, emergency back-up power and power arbitrage. The full-scale uptake of the VRB in commercial energy storage systems however, is heavily dependent on the availability and cost of vanadium used in the VRB electrolyte. Cost is also a function of purity requirements and although there is little scientific evidence on the effect of impurities on the VRB life and performance, VRB developers continue to demand high purity vanadium at considerable cost. This paper will provide a brief overview of the current understanding of electrolyte impurities on VRB performance together with an economic analysis of the impact of vanadium prices on overall VRB capital and levelised costs for a range of applications.

"Le présent article porte sur la diminution des rejets de concentrateurs produits durant l’exploitation et le traitement des minerais métalliques.Le minerai dilué envoyé au traitement a, très souvent, un certain pourcentage du stérile qui affecte directement la rentabilité des opérations souterraines et amplifie l’impact négatif sur l’environnement. Les essais de la séparation du stérile et du minerai effectués en milieu dense sur quelques types de la minéralisation d’or, ont démontré les deux possibilités qu’offre cette technique:• Dans le cas d’un minerai riche, il a été possible de séparer la part importante du toutvenant (minerai dilué contenant le minerai et le stérile) provenant de la dilution, tout en ayant un taux de récupération élevé (supérieur à 96%).• Dans le cas d’un minerai ayant une teneur sub-économique à cause d’une dilution importante, il est possible de produire un concentré ayant une teneur économique à l’entrée de l’usine de traitement, en éliminant une partie du tout-venant.En plus la séparation du stérile peut accroître, en outre, la rentabilité de l’exploitation minière, car le fait d’éliminer la partie de stérile le plus tôt possible diminue certains coûts (transport, traitement et autres). On conclue que la pré-concentration du minerai (séparation du stérile et du minerai) est probablement une seule solution actuellement étudiée qui diminue l’impact environnemental de la mine, sans avoir des conséquences négatives sur la rentabilité de l’exploitation souterraine."

"INTRODUCTIONWestern Mines' copper-lead-zinc operations are located in Strathcona Provincial Park, near the geographic centre of Vancouver Island. This park includes Buttle Lake, which flows into the Campbell River water system. The latter provides domestic water for the Town of Campbell River, approximately fifty-eight miles from the mine site.Operation of the concentrator commenced in December 1966, at which time the tailings were discharged into a small tailings pond near the plant. On May 8, 1967 Permit No. 185 was granted to the company, allowing discharge of the tailings, through a submerged outfall, to the bottom of Buttle Lake.Needless to say, the concept of operating a mine within a park, and the discharge of tailings into Buttle Lake generated considerable controversy. However, this has all but been eliminated over the years by the proven effectiveness of Western Mines' pollution control program. In 1973 this program was further upgraded with the addition of an alkaline chlorination plant. Effluent treatment by this method became necessary as a result of process modifications, and has been effective in maintaining the levels of characteristics in the tailings within the ever increasing pollution control requirements imposed on the industry."

Passive monitoring of support performance during rockbursts was conducted at three deep underground mines. A comprehensive database was constructed of 172 seismic events and the associated damage to support systems at 266 mine locations from January 2000 to September 2012. The majority of pertinent information was obtained through seismic system records and on-site field assessments. This work assesses the quality of collected information and evaluates the dynamic-load demand on support systems in seismically active mines.

ESPLIM is a novel separation technique that combines the advantages of solvent extraction and electrostatic dispersion but its application in the extraction of nickel by the direct solvent extraction route and the effect of high electrostatic field on the stability of organics have not been explored. These were investigated in this study and it was found that the technique allows 97% extraction of the nickel in a single stage compared with 3 stages by the conventional solvent extraction. Also, three months of exposure to 5.0 kV under simulated operational conditions had no adverse effect on the stability of organics.

Solar Hydrogen Energy Corporation (SHEC Labs) recently constructed a pilot-plant to demonstrate a Dry Fuel Hydrogen Generation System that is powered primarily by sunlight focusing-mirrors. The pilot-plant consists of: A Solar Mirror Array and Advanced Solar Concentrator and Shutter System; and two thermo-catalytic reactors to convert Methane, Carbon Dioxide, and Water into Hydrogen. Results from the pilot study show that Solar Hydrogen generation is feasible and cost-competitive with traditional Hydrogen production. More than 95% of Hydrogen commercially produced today is by the Steam Methane Reformation (SMR) of natural gas, a process that liberates Carbon Dioxide to the atmosphere. The SMR process provides a net energy loss of 30 to 35% when converting from Methane to Hydrogen. Solar Hydrogen production provides a 14% net energy gain when converting Methane into Hydrogen since the energy used to drive the process is from the sun. The environmental benefits of generating Hydrogen using renewable energy include significant greenhouse gas and criteria air contaminant reductions.

In the presented study test work was performed with near-infrared hyperspectral imagery (NIR-HI) on 36 ore samples from a South-American epithermal Au-Ag mine. The aim of the test work was to investigate if NIR-HI provides information about the alteration mineralogy of samples that can be used to predict their economic value. Mineral distribution maps were produced from the hyperspectral images by using correlation coefficients between the image pixels and a set of reference spectra. These maps showed that detection of mineralogy with NIR-HI can be used to distinguish; i) ore particles with low Au and Ag grades, ii) ore particles with high carbon contents, iii) ore particles with high sulphur contents.

"This paper examines the economic advantages of adapting the production grade and recovery targets of a flotation circuit as a function of metal prices. The study is periormed using a steady state simulator for a Cu-Zn differential flotation circuit operating under the following strategies of 1) Maintaining constant operating targets, 2) Maximizing individual circuit Net Smelter Return and 3) Maximizing the global Cu-Zn circuit efficiency. Results are compared to assess whether or not one of the strategies produces benefits significantly higher than the others. A facilities success or failure of doing well during a regulatory inspection is typically measured by the number and type of citations that result, and financial liability resulting from those citations. The success of a facility during an inspection depends on several factors including, the preparation prior to an inspection, behavior and activities during and inspection, and finally, action taken following the inspection. This paper contains suggestions for improving inspection results and establishing an attitude of compliance at manufacturing and mining facilities.
