Abstract -The Molopo Farms Complex is a major, layered ultramafic/mafic, early Proterozoic intrusion which is totally covered by sediments of the Karoo and Kalahari Formations and situated in southern Botswana and northeastern South Africa. The approximately 3000 m thick, generally fine- to medium-grained ultramafic and mafic cumulates are intrusive into equivalents of Transvaal Supergroup sediments and lavas. Multiphase deformation resulted in tilting and segmentation of the Complex into individual tectonic blocks. Sr isotopes document at least two chemically distinct parental liquids which interacted in a complex manner to form an approximately 1000 m thick rhythmically layered succession which straddles the ultramafic/mafic boundary. Repeated mixing resulted in a complex cryptic layering pattern and numerous sulfide-enriched layers which contain significant PGE +Au concentrations.

"The Abitibi volcano-plutonic belt forms the major portion of the Abitibi lithotectonic subprovince in the Superior Province. The Abitibi belt is composed essentially of"" (1) approximately 2.7 Ga old volcanic and sedimentary rocks; and (2) gabbro, tonalite, granodiorite and syenite intrusions occurring in well-defined prekinematic ( synvolcanic ), synkinematic and post-kinematic plutonic suites. Most of these rocks are metamorphosed to greenschist facies. Regional multi-phase deformation affects the volcano-sedimentary rocks. Deformation was initiated as these rocks were formed, and peaked at the end of the Keno ran orogeny with the emplacement of granitic batholiths.There are 145 former and current mines in the Quebec segment of the belt. To date, more than 420 Mt of ore have been extracted yielding 1,600 tonnesof Au, more than4,000 tonnesof Ag,4,400,000 tonnes of Cu and 5,300,000 tonnes of Zn. Mineral production is concentrated in geologic domains that approximately coincide with the boundaries of lithotectonic domains. We have compared the geology and mineral deposits of different domains to illustrate their distinct metallogenic signature. Certain domains are dominantly gold-producing (Cadillac-Malartic, Val-d'Or, Caopatina), others are base-metal producers (Matagami and Normetal), while others produce both gold and base metals ( Rouyn-Noranda, Chibougamau, Casa-Berardi-Joutel).Gold is extracted from quartz-rich vein deposits (for example, Val-d' Or), sulfide-rich veindeposits(Cadillac or Chibougamau) and from volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits ( Rouyn-Noranda). Base metals are generally mined from volcanogenic massive sulfide( RouynNoranda, Matagami, Normetal), although certain vein deposits yield base metals (Chibougamau) . Certain sectors are dominantly zincrich (Matagami, Normetal)."

"We all know that every man who works for us should have a thorough knowledge and understanding of his responsibilities. But how about ourselves? Du we have a thorough knowledge and understanding of our own responsibilities as Mill Superintendents?I once had an occasion to say to a Manager that I did not know something was my responsibility and he replied with suitable emphasis ""Everything inside those four walls is your responsibility"". That makes the extent of our responsibilities clear but does not give us a check list to keep an eye on as we do our job from day to day.What are our responsibilities? I suggest they are the following:1. Developing and maintaining efficient operating and maintenance crews.2. Milling the required tonnage.3. Recovering the economical maximum amount of gold.4. Keeping costs at the economical minimum.5. Seeing that the figures are reasonably accurate for tonnages, assays, production, losses, and costs.6. Preventing accidents.7. Preventing fires.8. Reference to the original use of the terms Laurentian and Huronian (and its extension), shows that the former was applied to granitized sedimentary and metamorphic pre-Cambrian rocks, and the gneissoid igneous rocks associated therewith, and the latter to non-fossiliferous rocks supposed to be later. But it appears from the work of Collins, Quirke and others that there is more or less of an overlap, and that of the original Laurentian the Grenville limestone, and some of the granites, may be later than the lowest part of the original Huronian. Before we can decide whether to abandon one or the other of the two terms, or how to delimit them, it is important to know the extent of this overlap. The Pb :U ratio, though not to be depended upon too minutely, does give a real idea of the age of a mineral as it increases with the decay of uranium, and so is greater the longer the time since the uranium was separated: and there are reasonable prospects of help there from in getting a knowledge of the relative age of different granites to assist in solving the problem, as facts already collected show. 1. "Volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits of the Noranda Camp cur throughout the Noranda Shield Volcano but are concentrated and along the margins of the Noranda Cauldron. The deposits are realized along synvolcanic faults that also accommodated subsince and controlled the location of eruptive centres. Deposits within e 3 000 m thick Mine Sequence formed during a period of active volcanism and subsidence coinciding with the onset of two cauldron subsidence cycles. The Noranda Cauldron was a restricted site of 10malously high heat flow and structural permeability that favoured e development of a high-temperature hydrothermal system. Metals may have been derived from leaching of aquifer rocks by convecting a water or directly from a shallow underlying magma chamber, now presented by the Plavrian Pluton, that was at its highest position !thin the crust during cauldron subsidence. The majority of all refined copper is consumed to produce electrical conductors. Most copper conductors are drawn into wire from 8 mm ETP copper rod produced from high purity copper cathodes. Southwire Company has more than 40 years experience using, designing, fabricating and marketing a process for continuously producing ETP copper wire rod. This process is called the SCR® (Southwire Continuous Rod) process. Today, approximately half the copper wire rod produced in the world, or more than one third of all refined copper consumed, is produced using the SCR process. Southwire has sold 75 SCR copper rod mills to metal producers and wire manufacturers around the world. Southwire is North America's largest electrical wire and cable producer. Southwire operates a 48 metric ton per hour SCR® copper rod system in Carrollton, Georgia. This allows Southwire to provide technical support for existing SCR® system customers based on first-hand knowledge. Rod fabricators and their wire customers are always striving for copper rod that improves productivity. They are looking for improved surface quality, finer wire sizes and fewer wire breaks per ton of rod drawn. This paper will present a brief history of the SCR® process, a description and recent process developments.

Mining projects depend on the amount and quality of the mineral reserves, which in turn depend on the amount and quality of the mineral resources. Only Measured and Indicated Resources may be converted to mineral reserves and Inferred Resources may not, with certain exceptions, be used in economic studies. Responsibility for the estimation of mineral resources rests with the Qualified Person (QP) and there is a wealth of literature, text books and case studies to guide the QP. Responsibility for the classification of the mineral resources also rests with the QP. While there is some industry guidance and common practice on approaches to resource classification on which the QP can draw, the process is (or should be) heavily dependent on the exercise of judgement by the QP. However, this inevitably leads to situations where, for example, one QP?s Inferred Resource is another QP?s Indicated Resource. If the QP?s judgement is poorly reasoned or illogical (as is sometimes the case), it can have a major impact on the project, often with substantial cost or value implications. Project managers and company executives should not unquestioningly accept QP?s classification decisions and should apply the same intensity of due diligence that they apply to other critical elements of the project.

Large quantities of solid by-products are generated by the steel industry and other important activity sectors in Europe (power plants, car dismantling companies, urban incinerators) with no or very limited potential for direct recovery. In the frame of a multi¬national project supported by the European Union, a consortium has been created to develop a treatment process able to turn these by-products into valuable metallic and mineral products. VAI has been responsible for the design, erection and start-up of the pilot plant for the new metallurgical process and for the execution of the test campaigns, with the targets defined together with the partners. Up to now, 9 campaigns comprising 60 heats have been performed successfully. By-products from C-Steel and stainless steel plants, as well as fly ash and auto shredder residues, have been used and defined products such as hydraulic binders for cement, metallurgical powders for De-S practice and recycled metal phase have been produced. The mineral products were positively assessed under industrial conditions. Results from cement tests and secondary metallurgy are reported, as well as a detailed characterization. The economic value of the products, credits from avoiding dumping and significant savings on CO2 emissions make the new process economically very attractive.

"Incorporated in 1976, Sidbec Normines was mandated to exploit a deposit of specular hematite at Fire Lake. A combined effort of three companies, Sidbec, which holds 50. 1 % of the actions, British Steel Corporation another 41.67 % and finally Quebec Cartier Mining, a subsiduary of U.S. Steel Corporation, with still another 8.23 %.The deposit is located 60 miles north of the town of Gagnon. The extracted ore is crushed, in a giratory crusher, to-8 11 chunks, and from there, it is transported, by rail, to a concentrator at Lac Jeannine.A concentrate containing 65.5 % Fe and 5.5 % Sio2 is produced, using conventional methods like autogeneous mil ls and spirals. The concentrate is then transported by rail to the Port Cartier installations.The installations in Port Cartier include a secondary concentrator, a pellet plant, and stockpiling facilities for pellets and concentrate. The pellet plant has two product lines in paralel, producing a total designed tonnage of 6 millions tons of iron ore pellets, of which 3mi11ions tons are used in direct reduction furnaces.The secondary concentrator is designed to remove a portion of the silica contained in the ore, usually less than 2 % Si02 should remain from the original 5.5 % Si02 in order to produce iron ore pellets which are well suited for use in direct reduction and electric furnaces."

Canal communication between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario has been one of almost constant enlargement and reconstruction to meet the rapid growth of trade and commerce, and the consequent steady increase in the size of vessels plying the Great Lakes. The original canal was built by the Welland Canal Company. The first sod was turned in 1824 and the first vessel passed through in. 1829. There were 36 lift-locks, built of oak timber, 110 feet long and 22 feet wide, with a depth of water over the sills of 8 feet. The second canal, now known as the 'Old Welland Canal' was built by the Dominion of Canada (1842 to 1850). There were 26 masonry locks, 150 feet long, 26.5 feet wide and with a depth of water over the sills of 9 feet. The walls and banks were raised in 1853 to give a 10-foot draught. The third canal, known as the 'New Welland Canal, built by the Dominion of Canada, was started in June 1874 and the first boat passed through in the spring of 1882. There are 25 masonry lift-locks, 270 feet long, 45 feet wide and with a depth of water over the sills of 12 feet. The walls and banks were raised in 1891 to give a 14-foot draught. This is the canal in use at present.

"L'objectif principal recherché lors du broyage d 'un minerai est de libérer adéquatement ses valeurs utiles en vue de leur concentration ultérieure. La pratique courante consiste à tenter d'obtenir un produit de broyage d'une granulométrie constante. Malheureusement, les propriétés texturales des minéraux utiles varient naturellement dans un gisement et une telle stratégie n'entraine pas toujours pour ces minéraux un degré de libération constant. Pour un rendement optimal du procédé de concentration, cette variable très importante doit donc être périodiquement vérifiée.Jusqu'à maintenant, la plupart des études de libération des minerais se font en examinant des sections polies de particules du minerai broyé. Le GRAAIM a récemment assemblé un système modulaire d'analyse d'images qui servira en grande partie à des mesures automatiques du degré de libération des minéraux. Le système s'avère relativement peu coûteux comparativement à la plupart des analyseurs de texture conventionnels si l'on considère que plusieurs de ses composantes, par exemple le miniordinateur, sont utilisées à une foule d'autres applications, et il permet de plus une grande souplesse d'utilisation puisque l'on a qu'à construire des algorithmes de mesure et de calcul en fonction de l'objectif recherché. Des programmes particuliers permettant des études automatiques de libération sur des sections polies de particules ont ainsi été élaborés. Ils permettent également des mesures de teneurs et de distributions granulométriques apparentes des particules. Des résultats obtenus dans le cas de minerais de fer sont brièvement présentés afin d'illustrer la technique."

"A description of the Geco orebody has been given by W .L. Brown and R.C.E. Bray (1). The mill flowsheet and equipment were described by M.J.S. Bennett, D. Wild and C. Lawton (2). Mill capacity is now 4, 150 tons per operating day of copper, silver, zinc and lead ore. A recent flowsheet has been published in the - Canadian Mining Manual (1966).Soon after the start of production in September 1957, it became apparent that large tonnages of sand would be required by the mine for backfill pruposes. Initial experimental work on the preparation of sand fill from the flotation tailings was begun in late 19 59. Cyclones of local manufacture, in a variety of sizes, were tested quite successfully. There were, however, several obvious advantages with some of the custom-built cyclones and a recommendation was obtained from the Techniquip Company. A single Krebs D-10-B cyclone was tested experimentally in 1960.INITIAL TESTWORKExperimental results showed that with our relatively coarse grind (in the order of 53 % minus 200 mesh) 75 - 80% of the flotation tailings could be recovered as backfill sand with one stage of treatment. Percolation rates of four inches per hour were obtained with cyclone inlet pressures in the range of 20 - 25 psi and feed densities of 20 - 23% solids."

The search for minerals in the future will be dominated by deeper exploration and the need to accurately target ?blind? deposits as more and more of the ?easy? near surface targets are exhausted. In this context, key technologies are emerging for deep exploration both in grassroots and minesite exploration, including the Titan 24 Deep Penetrating geophysical technology. Introduced in 2001, this technology has grown rapidly into an accepted approach for exploration in a variety of geologic environments, including brownfield environments where discovering additional reserves would most quickly benefit companies. Titan 24 belongs to a new class of sophisticated Distributed Acquisition Systems (DAS) which record high-volume, high-quality data simultaneously at multiple receiver stations. This data is then processed digitally, modeled using specialized inverse modeling software, and interpreted according to geologic and other parameters. The result is a robust, high-quality, high-volume data sets which provide a basis for improved imaging to depth. In this paper, the Titan 24 distributed technology is discussed. Illustrations of the vast improvement to overall exploration are showcased through results in several case studies. These include examples from two gold deposits, a porphyry deposit and a minesite. These examples show the range of applicability of the technology and the ability to effectively image mineralization, lithology, structure and alteration to depth as an aid to understanding prospective mineral deposits and targeting drills more accurately.

1. De Beers, Diamonds and Canada 1.1. De Beers was founded long ago (1888, the same time that Canada became a country) in a rural mining village in South Africa. Today, we employ 22,000 people across 19 countries and have 14 mines including open pits, shafts, beach-sands and seabed. 1.2. Last year our sales were US$5.7 billion and our total production amounted to 47 million carats which means a 40% global market share. For the Kyoto buffs in the audience, the company consumes 66 million cubic metres of water per annum, 210 million litres of hydrocarbon fuel and 1,600 GWh of electricity. Stats are good, but aren?t as expressive as a movie. This one is 2 minutes long, which is quicker than I could elaborate. (Video 1 - 2 minutes) 2. De Beers in Botswana is the leading source of diamonds 2.1 Today Botswana is the Jewell in the Crown. There are three big open pits that enjoy economies of scale that make them the lowest cost producers. Last year 60 million tonnes of overburden and 30 million tonnes of ore were moved in Botswana alone. "The Cyprus Anvil Mining Corporation established a lead-zinc mine and concentrating plant at Faro in Yukon Territory in 1969. Following some 12 years of continuous operation from a single pit adjacent to the concentrator, the company decided to expand operations into two additional areas on the Vangorda Plateau. The two new deposits, known as Grum and Vangorda, are located some 15 kilometres from the existing concentrator.Confirmation of mining feasibility was followed by determination of the most practical and economical method of transporting the raw ore from the new mine sites to the existing concentrator. This analysis was carried out in two phases. The first phase reviewed the feasibility of alternative transportation systems on an 'order-of-magnitude' cost basis. This work identified systems worthy of more detailed examination. The second phase examined the preferred alternatives in greater detail.Initially, operating principles and parameters were established and catalogued. Then, based on these criteria, complete systems were developed utilizing alternative modes of transportation . In the overview analysis, some transportation modes were judged impractical and discarded, 'order-o f-magnitude' costs were developed for other systems and the most costly were eliminated . In the detailed study, the favourable systems were examined in depth which required development of accurate capital and operating costs, consideration of environ- mental impacts and an assessment of intangibles associated with the operation of a new development."

"When Texas Gulf Sulphur Company discovered the Kidd Creek ore body in 1964, a crash program began almost immediately for the design and construction of a modern concentrator. It was necessary to mill two distinct ore types; one containing copper and zinc, the other lead, silver and zinc minerals. The final concentrator design was to handle 9,000 tons of ore daily in three circuits. One circuit was to treat copper-zinc and another lead-zinc ore exclusively on a permanent basis. A central circuit was designed with adequate flexibility to treat either of the above ore types in accordance with planned mining schedules. Ecstall Mining Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary, now operates the mine and concentrator complexes for Texas Gulf. The mine is located 15 miles north of Timmins and the concentrator 15 miles to the north-east along Highway 101. The ore is hauled from the mine to the concentrator over a 17-mile railroad. Initial milling operations began in November, 1966.1 - ABSTRACTThis paper deals with bulk reagent handling at the Kidd Creek concentrator. The reagent section at Kidd Creek has operated excellently since milling began in 1966. The bulk handling techniques are satisfactory. They have contributed substantially to good working conditions, economical practices and metallurgical efficiencies. The bulk handling features described should be considered in existing and proposed concentrators."

"After an extensive period of University research and field trials, large scale reclamation of the Waite Amulet tailings discharge areas commenced in the spring of 1978. The Noranda program consists principally of sampling the complete dam to determine the vegetation potential of the various areas, addition of the required amelioration materials, and the use of good agricultural practices. This paper describes the development work that led to the establishment of the Noranda-Guelph Contract and the subsequent findings concerning the revegetation of tailings dams. Current revegetation procedures are presented. INTRODUCTIONThe Amulet Mine Ltd. was staked in 1924 and by 1930 had constructed a small 300 ton per day flotation plant. During the late twenties and early thirties, Noranda Mines Ltd. increased its equity in the company to gain a sixty percent share of this small mine. In 1933 the mine was amalgamated with another small producer, the Waite Ackerman Montgomery Mine Ltd., which was more than eighty per cent controlled by Noranda to form the Waite Amulet Mines Ltd.An interesting historical side point to the story of the Waite Ackerman Montgomery property is that a concentrator was never constructed. In fact, the first ore to go through the Horne mill of Noranda Mines Ltd., built in 1928, was not from the famous upper H and L ore bodies but custom shipments from the Waite."

"Investors in flow-through shares are going to need an expanded road map to find their way through a growing maze of tax rules affecting such shares. At the end of 1985, no fewer than three new sets of important tax amendments were tabled which could have a significant effect on flow-through share issues. This proposed legislation is discussed this month in Tax Notes.IntroductionIn a flurry of legislative activity at the end of 1985, the federal government tabled legislation which includes the introduction of new rules which will have a notable effect on investors in flow-through shares and on companies that issue such shares.First, on November 26, 1985, Bill C-84, the legislation to implement most of the changes announced in the May budget, was introduced in Parliament. This legislation includes the rules for the $500,000 capital gains exemption, a matter of considerable interest to flow through share investors.Next, on December 2, 1985, the government tabled a Notice of Ways and Means Motion which would extend the time horizon for spending flow-through share funds to include the 60-day period following the calendar year. But all news was not good news. On December 4 the government released its proposals for a minimum personal income tax, which would include rules that would catch an investor's CEE expenses and capital gains."

Industrially proven and applied nitrogen species catalyzed (i.e. NSC) acidic pressure leaching has been utilized to treat a number of ores, concentrates and recycled materials. This versatile technology offers many advantages including low temperatures, low pressures, low capital costs, low operating costs, faster throughput and less costly materials of construction than conventional pressure oxidation. This paper will elucidate the application of this technology for production of gold, silver, palladium, rhodium, zinc, germanium, gallium, cobalt, copper and nickel. Recycled material applications will also be elucidated. In addition, details of an application for treatment of a refractory chalcopyrite copper and gold bearing ore will be presented and pertinent economics discussed.
