This paper introduces a model-based automatic object recognition and registration framework to assist heavy equipment operators in rapidly perceiving 3D working environment at dynamic construction sites. A video camera and a laser scanner were utilized in this study to rapidly recognize and register dynamic target objects in a 3D space by dynamically separating target object?s point cloud data from a background scene for a quick computing process. A smart scan data updating method has been developed which only updates the dynamic target object?s point cloud data while keeping the previously scanned static work environments. Extracted target areas containing 3D point clouds were orthographically projected into a series of 2D planes with a rotation center located in the target?s vertical-middle line. Prepared 2D templates were compared to these 2D planes by extracting SURF features. Point cloud bundles of the target were recognized, and followed by the prepared CAD model?s registration to the templates. The field experimental results show that the proposed rapid workspace modeling method can significantly improve heavy construction equipment operations and automated equipment control by rapidly modeling dynamic target objects in a 3D view.

KATCO (an ORANO Mining and Kazatomprom joint venture) is the largest in-situ leach uranium mining operation in the world, exploiting the Muyunkum and Tortkuduk uranium deposits in southern Kazakhstan. After extraction from the deposits, uranium is then transported via a hydraulic network to be purified in three processing plants located near these deposits. Within KATCO, with the support of ORANO Mining and CASPEO, in 2018 and 2019, a large project that had as its main objective to improve the uranium accounting system was implemented. The objective of this paper is to describe this project and all the changes that it entailed. At KATCO plants, a black-box approach was previously used for uranium accounting. However, it is recommended to use all the available measurements and to deploy a data reconciliation model (between well-fields and plant) as the reconciliation uncertainty is overall lower and it provides a more accurate uranium balance. During the deployment of this project, the rules and algorithms to generate the uranium accounting report, the associated flow diagrams (for uranium accounting), the streams, units of operation, stocks, reporting and Key Performance Indicators calculation rules were re-defined.

Shipping and stevedoring industry is going to witness a massive increase in the amount of containers to be handled while land constraints become more critical. Offshore transfer operations hence offer a preferable solution to deal with the surge in cargos rather than to expand the port outwards. Recently, there has been increasing research interests on offshore crane automation. Suspended cargos in a ship-mounted crane system are caused to swing due to the vibratory motion of the ship induced by ocean waves, which can lead to collision between cargos and deck. Therefore, it is vital for offshore crane systems to satisfy rigorous requirements in terms of safety and efficiency. This paper presents the modelling and control development for offshore boom crane systems. A second-order sliding mode control law is proposed for trajectory tracking and sway suppression control, making use of its capability of actuator chattering alleviation while achieving high tracking performance and preserving strong robustness. The asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system is guaranteed in the Lyapunov sense. Simulation results indicate that the proposed controller can significantly reduce the effect of disturbances coming from gusty waves and other dynamic loadings.

The utilization of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and model based 3-D control of work machines have increased a lot in new road construction in Finland as well as in other Nordic Countries. Up today, much less attention has been paid into the development of maintenance and rehabilitation processes. As a part of a large research and development program RYM PRE Infra FIN BIM in Finland, a focused research project of the BIM with experiments in total five (5) pilot projects has been performed. A main idea of the new BIM based process has been to utilize mobile laser scanning method for initial data acquirement, the use of novel 3-D analyze and modelling methods for point cloud processing, the use of new type optimization method for the planning of geometric and structural improvements needed for the existing uneven road surfaces, and further, through the creation of 3-D machine control models apply the newest 3- D machine control systems for continuous 3-D control of practical construction work using milling machine and asphalt paver. Finally, an evaluation is made between the new process model and the traditional way of working.

THOSE familiar with the development of the Horne mine can readily appreciate that more and more accommodation bas been required for underground labour as the mine has grown. A permanent fire-proof change house, 30ft. by 75 ft., was built in 1927 to accommodate 194 men. This was extended ro 30 ft. by 92 ft. in 1928 to accommodate 296 men, and to 30ft. by 110 ft. in 1930 to accommodate 398 men. By 1933 this building was again overcrowded and tentative plans for a new change house were drawn up. However, it was realized that future operations would be centred around No. 4 shaft and a proposed new shaft, and the decision as to the location of the new change house had to be deferred until the area which seemed most suitable for the new shaft had been thoroughly explored underground. In the spring of 1934, the basic idea was accepted of drying the wet clothes in open mesh compartments or baskets located between rows of standard steel street-clothes lockers and built so that the covers or lids would serve as seats or benches.

Introduction An investigation of the bituminous sands of Alberta was begun by the Mines Branch, Department of Mines, in 1913. This investigation was interrupted during the period 1916-19, but was resumed in 1920. Work completed in October 1924 has included detailed topographical surveys of extensive areas, examination and sampling of principal outcrops, the mining of trial shipments, laying of demonstration pavements, and a study of methods adapted to the recovery of hydrocarbons from the crude bituminous sand. Bituminous sand consists, for the most part, of clear quartz grains, cemented together by petroleum residuum or bitumen. In form the quartz grains are most irregular, varying from sharply angular to smooth, waterworn shapes. The bitumen has a specific gravity of 1.018 and has a penetration of 9.00 mm. (77° F. 100 grams 1 sec.). The percentage of bitumen associated with the sand varies from 5 to 25 per cent. A large tonnage is available in which the percentage of bitqmen is 15 per cent or over. Production Up to the present time, production has been restricted to requirements for experimental .and demonstration work. The total quantity shipped for such purposes has not exceeded 750 tons.

"The Alberta and Northwest Chamber of Mines was founded in Edmonton, Alberta in 1935. The organization represented private sector mining explorers and developers in the province and north west Canada. The Chamber aided and abetted the establishment of the two territorial mining associations. Because of corporate human resource department creation by north of sixty mine operators, the Chamber refocused on Alberta and broadened its perspective to include activities beyond mining. In 1977 the name changed to the Alberta Chamber of resources. The slogan (in more modern terms vision, mandate, goal, etc) remains as Orderly Development of Canada's Resources.The sixty-three year reputation of the Chamber, built on volunteer rather than staff contribution, is the principal reason for any success. The key has truly been the reputation, not an image, as all activities have been solution oriented.This presentation provides insight into the structure and methodology applied by the organization, and reviews some of the successes and failures during the period 1985 to present. Uranium exploration expenditure in Australia reached a record level of A$220.5 million in 2008, which has subsequently declined to A$185.2 million for the year ended 30 June 2009. Recent discoveries include: Ranger 3 Deeps east of Ranger open pit (Northern Territory), Pepegoona and Yadglin sandstone hosted deposits (South Australia), and Thunderball project (Northern Territory). Australia?s Reasonably Assured Resources recoverable at costs of <US$80/kg U at June 2009 are estimated to be 1,210,000 t U, 4% higher than the estimate for December 2008. The main additions were in the south eastern portion of the Olympic Dam orebody. The Olympic Dam Expansion is based on a large open pit and will increase output to an annual capacity of 19,000 t U3O8; 750,000 t copper; 800,000 ounces gold. The Four Mile in situ recovery project was approved in July 2009. An ion exchange facility is to be constructed at Four Mile and uranium-bearing resins will be transported to the Beverley plant to recover the uranium. Recent developments at Ranger mine, and Honeymoon, Oban and Yeelirrie projects are discussed.

The technology to selectively leach gold, silver and base metals from ores, concentrates, and wastes, using an alkaline glycine solution, has initiated significant interest in using the new technology in various environments such as in-situ, in-place, dump, heap, and vat and agitated tank leaching. It has been shown that glycine acts synergistically with a number of other lixiviants to lower the net consumption of the other lixiviants while allowing low cost glycine solution recovery. Glycine is a non-toxic, stable, environmentally benign reagent that is available in bulk industrial quantities. It has the ability to dissolve most copper oxide and sulfide minerals, as well as native copper, whilst not interacting with acid consuming gangue nor dissolving iron and various or ubiquitous gangue elements. It acts synergistically with small amounts of cyanide to leach gold-copper ores at leach rates higher than either glycine or cyanide on their own, while significantly reducing cyanide consumption and eliminating detoxification requirements. The leaching behaviour of various glycine based systems will be reviewed, followed by the evaluation of the adsorption of gold onto activated carbon. Where the economics merit it, copper can be easily recovered using solvent extraction or sulfide precipitation.

Both the 8 and A-C ore zones of the Heath Steele Mine contain extensive areas of brecciated ore. This texturally distinct ore type has been tentatively defined as a fragmental or conglomerate massive sulphide. It consists of subangular and round fragments of pyrite up to 30 em in diameter, smaller quartz clasts and chloritized, mineralized, lithic fragments in a faintly banded matrix of pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite. The chalcopyrite is concentrated in the pressure shadows of the fragments and appears to reflect remobilization and recrystallization during a deformation which postdates the formation of the clasts. A generally conformable relationship with the underlying banded pyrite-sphalerite ore, discordancy with the host banded argillites, spatial distribution and similarity to Kuroko ores suggest that the fragmental ore is of primary origin and that breccia formation is probably due to soft-sediment slumping or sliding initiated by volcanic explosions, as hypothesized for similar massive sulphides in various Japanese mines. It is nevertheless recognized that certain structural features in some clasts may result from deformation preceding the formation of the breccia, and at this stage a tectonic origin cannot be completely eliminated.

As the deposits located closer to the surface are getting depleted, more and more Canadian mines produce ore from considerable depths. Deep mining represents a number of serious challenges including high rock temperature. Conventional diesel powered loadhaul- dump machines and trucks so widely used in metal mines constitute an additional source of heat and noxious gases. Due to this, they have a substantial adverse impact on a quantity of fresh air required and a cost of ventilation, particularly since the mines have to meet more and more stringent regulations in this respect. In this context, the paper examines possible alternatives for diesel powered equipment, both these commercially available as those at the stages of prototypes or under development. They are reviewed with regards to their principles, required infrastructure, stage of technology development and its progress. The questions of their flexibility, practicality and economic viability are also addressed. Following the above a potential for their implementation and possible benefits (if any) in the conditions of deep Canadian mines is discussed. The paper concludes with short to medium term predictions concerning the most promising drive alternatives for vehicles destined to operate in deep metal mines.

"This is a panel discussion on the milling experience with large volume flotation machines in Canada. Over the past ten years, the Canadian milling industry has been characterized by treatment of ever increasing tonnages of lower grade ores. In order to treat these ores efficiently, mineral processors have been employing increasingly larger volume flotation machines. In older established mills, standard flotation cells have been replaced by the larger volume models with very apparent savings in mill floor space as noted in the Opemiska copper mill.We are pleased to hear from four mill operators with extensive experience on large volume flotation machines. They are:1. I. E. Wahn, metallurgist with Falconbridge-Manibridge, who will describe their mill experiences with the Tank cell and the Maxwell cell.2. G. M. Hughes, mill superintendent of Sherritt Gordon-Ruttan, will detail recent experience with the Agitair cell.3. J. R. "There are two main issues stemming from Vallée’s (2002) comments on Dominy et al. (2001b). First, he raises the importance of quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) during resource estimation programs, and second, he indicates that the resolution and understanding of continuity (grade and geological) issues are paramount in the classification of resources. In particular, continuity is critical at the boundary between the Inferred and Indicated Mineral Resource categories. The original contribution agrees with the importance of these points, and the principal author offers the following discussion and clarification. Further comment is also provided on the reporting of grade uncertainty through grade ranges.It is worth remembering that vein-gold deposits (e.g., shear-zone, lode-gold, mesothermal types etc.), particularly those containing coarse gold particles (e.g., >100 µm), generally show large variations in grade and an erratic grade distribution. In most cases, diamond drilling is a good measure of geological continuity (depending on drill spacing), but a poor measure of grade and its distribution. High-nugget effect deposits rank among the most difficult deposit types in terms of producing an accurate and precise resource estimate, and clearly represent a distinct deposit type."

"Abstract - The Asturian fluorspar district consists of vein and stratiform deposits where mineralization is controlled by a combination of lithological and tectonic factors.It is postulated that these fluorspar deposits have been formed under disequilibrium conditions created during circulation of ascending hydrothermal solutions along faults and other high permeability conduits. Mixing of solutions is inferred from fluid inclusion studies. Cavity filing and replacement processes are very important in localizing the ore deposits and in determining their morphology.Permian volcanic rocks in the area yield a regional positive geochemical anomaly in fluorine implying that Permian vulcanism may be a possible primary source of fluorine.On a regional scale a relationship can be established between some of the ore deposits and important tectonic lineaments. The stratiform deposits preferentially occur within a calcareous-detrital facies located at the margins of basins. These basin margins are related to important synsedimentaryfaults.Fluorite is the only economic mineral in these deposits. Quartz, carbonates, barite and pyrite are comnmon minerals accompanying fluorite. Other minerals that may occasionally be present as minor components are: marcasite, chalcopyrite, fahlore, sphalerite, galena and related supergene minerals."

The paper will outline the methods and test procedures including the evaluation criteria currently used at the Materials Testing Laboratory (MTL), Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, a laboratory approved by the Ontario Minister of Labour for the purpose of testing or examining mine shaft ropes or other hoisting appliances. Also for Canadian mines the paper will suggest proposed criteria to be used at MTL for the evaluation of ropes used in "ultra-deep" single-lift shafts. Most of the methods and test procedures currently used at MTL were adopted during the revision of the CSA Standard G4, Steel Wire Rope for General Purpose and for Mine Hoisting and Mine Haulage to be published most likely in year 2001. In this latest or sixth edition of CSA Standard G4, a new Clause 14 has been added outlining the requirements for in-service destructive testing of steel wire ropes for mine hoisting applications. The existing fifth edition of CSA Standard CAN/CSA -G4-92, which is intended for the manufacturing of new ropes, includes requirements for raw materials and construction features for round strand and flattened strand rope, and locked coil rope in bright and galvanized finish.

Rare earth elements and yttrium (REEs+Y) are being used in the making of hybrid electric cars, catalytic converters, wind power generators, LEDs, hard disc drives, flat panel displays, and portable electronics. Currently China produces more than 95% of REEs+Y, which has made REEs+Y a critical strategic resource. Process Research ORTECH Inc. (PRO) has developed the innovative mixed-chloride (HCl+MgCl2) solvent extraction processes for recovery of REEs+Y from their ores. The HCl leaching system provides the opportunity to regenerate the acid, while the presence of MgCl2 in the lixiviant enhances the activity of the hydrogen ion by orders of magnitude, making the lixiviant very aggressive and resulting in high recoveries of REEs+Y. Solvent extraction steps are used for separation and purification of REEs+Y from other value metals or impurities including iron, zirconium, hafnium, uranium, thorium, niobium, tantalum and titanium. Direct individual separation of REEs+Y in a mixed chloride system allows avoiding the additional process steps of precipitation and dissolution in HCl. The resulting process has a simplified flow sheet that is closed-loop and environmentally friendly.

Only the provinces of Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia made more than minor modifications to their tax structures, with both Ontario and Quebec imposing major tax increases. In the past year, the federal budget was also released in the spring. Not so this year: we have that to look forward to in the fall!This month, Tax Notes presents a brief summary of the more significant tax changes introduced at the provinciallevels in the last months.Summary of provincial tax rate changesThe tax changes in this year&apos;s provincial budgets were both up and down- but there were far more tax increases than tax cuts.At the corporate tax level, two provinces, New Brunswick and British Columbia, increased their general corporate income tax rate; the former by two percentage points and the latter by one percentage point. Quebec, rather unexpectedly, sharply cut its corporate tax rate on business income, but increased some of its other business taxes at the same time. British Columbia reduced its corporate tax rate on small business income by two percentage points and Saskatchewan by one percentage point."

"Noranda&apos;s Heath Steele Mine is located 35 miles north of Newcastle in northern New Brunswick. Blasthole open stoping with partial delayed filling is the major mining method in use. The selection of stope and pillar dimensions to ensure mine stability was originally subjective. This paper describes the progress made in attempting to rationalize design.One major feature is the fracture pattern. The main orebody now being mined, the B zone, has undergone five periods of folding and each period of folding developed a family of fracture planes which are axial planar to that particular fold pattern.The other major features considered are the calculated increase in stress due to mining and depth and its relationship to measured strain. Experience has shown that ground problems affecting production have usually originated in rib pillars. Field observations of ground deterioration and multi-wire extensometer measurements of strain are tabulated together chronologically for each pillar.A factor representing stress and a common plane of weakness are identified. Graphical analysis is used to determine the effect of the plane of weakness on a typical stress/strain curve and provides a base for the design of pillars."

"The corrosion of support bolts in underground mines has become an increasingly prevalent issue over the past two decades. With an increase of premature failures due to Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC), it is evident that understanding the environmental factor influencing the cable bolt corrosion is critical for maintaining effective ground support hence the safety and productivity of underground spaces. Experimental testing of rock and cable bolts were accomplished in a variety of packings, including saturated clay, saturated coal, mine water and grout/cement to investigate their corrosion behaviours. Water samples were obtained and analysed for pH and electrical conductivity (EC) during the experiment. After a period of 76 days the bolts were retrieved and analysed visually. Primary factors were found to be the presence of geological materials and the aeration of the bolts, i.e. the vicinity to air and air flow, while secondary factors were observed to be pH levels and EC. It was also found that the coal/clay interfaces and the water/grout/cement interfaces are non-relevant to corrosion of rockbolts and cable bolts. The proposed framework can be applied to other reinforcement materials used in underground spaces for improved understanding of corrosion environment.INTRODUCTION Rock bolts and cable bolts are the major reinforcement elements used in mining industry to improve the rockmass properties for safe and productive mining. They are normally used to pin large beams or blocks of rock in underground mines to stabilise the rockmass in the roof (strata) against collapse. The rockbolts are typically low cost hot rolled rebar while cable bolts are composed of strands of wire, normally wound together around a central king wire (Hyett and Bawden, 1993; Vandermaat, 2014). The typical length of the bolts in underground mines is 2.4 m and 4–12 m for rockbolts and cable bolts, respectively (Vandermaat, 2014; Windsor and Thompson, 1997). Cable bolts are much more flexible and usually offer a much higher load capacity than rigid rockbolts. Their increased length and flexibility allows cable bolts longer than the height of a roadway to be used in underground mines."

"This paper describes the evolution of the Waste Management Program at the Lupin Mine through the years 1982 - 1988. The program was developed in response to the terms and conditions of the Water Licence issued to the mine in 1981 by the Northwest Territories Water Board. Echo Bay Mines Lupin Mine is located on the western shore of Contwoyto Lake in Canada's Northwest Territories about 80 km. south of the Arctic Circle.The gold mine commenced production in 1982 and the Waste Management Program was based originally on the total containment concept. Due to an expansion of the mill circuitry and increased throughput, it was apparent that the total containment concept would require reevaluation since discharge from the pond would be required within a few years. During the initial years of production, an investigative program was established to determine the most effective means for treating the tailings pond water. This program incorporated both laboratory studies as well as monitoring of the tailings pond contents and environmental conditions as the impoundment area was filling. The program showed that natural degradation phenomena, if properly utilized, are effective in lowering the concentrations of all contaminants to within Licence limits with the exception of arsenic. To ensure compliance with arsenic limits, an iron salt was added to cause arsenic to precipitate from solution in the tailings pond.As a result of our studies, the tailings management system finally implemented at Lupin Mine includes the following components:Tailings pulp retention cells constructed by dyking off one end of the tailings impoundment area.Two tailings ponds in series operated in a sequential decant and fill fashion.An iron salt solution preparation and metering system.A syphon system into which the iron salt solution is injected as the contents of the first pond are decanted into the second pond.A second syphon system for decanting the contents of the second pond to the receiving streamThis paper discusses the findings and conclusions of the waste management investigative program, describes the civil work completed to reach our final operating scenario, describes the sequence of operating the treatment system, reviews performance data, and comments on abandonment and restoration of the tailings impoundment area."
