Electrochemical polarization experiments were conducted on alloy 625 in ammonia solution between 25 and 225°C and the results were compared with those of an oxygen solubility model. Results confirm that corrosion is under oxygen control, Normalized corrosion rates are determined based on the rate of oxygen diffusion to the corroding surface, and the corrosion rate at 200°C (-9.7 µA.cm-2) is roughly 24 times higher than the corrosion rate at 25°C (0.4 nA,cm-2), An oxygen-solubility model for Supercritical Water Oxidation (SCWO) conditions was generated using the Redlich¬Kwong-Soave (RKS) equation of state, Results of the model confirm many of the experimental observations from SCWO reactors which suggest that corrosion is at a maximum at temperatures just short of the critical point, The RKS/oxygen diffusion model predicts that the corrosion rate at 365° C is ?85 times higher than the corrosion rate at 25' C. Given that a normalized corrosion rate is obtained, this type of model could be useful for selection of SCWO reactor materials.

The CSP technology symbolizes a highly productive process for the cost-effective production of steel grades with a range of sophisticated properties comprising both the inner quality of hot strip, its surface formation as well as the relating technological characteristics. Thanks to extensive development work undertaken during the last 15 years, the range of steel grades that can be produced was continuously expanded and the process technology optimized. The present paper describes the ongoing development work concerning the production of higher-strength, microalloyed pipe steels. The resulting hot strip, due to the associated thickness and the potential pipe diameters, is particularly suited for being processed to HFI-welded pipes. Based both on ferrite-pearlite as well as very fine-grained, ferrite-bainite hot-strip microstructures, strength levels of up to grade API X80 can be realized. It can be demonstrated that hot strip produced in a CSP plant has very good toughness values at temperatures down to -60°C and can even make application with required sour-gas resistance possible.

Campbell Mine operates a 100 tpd gold autoclave that treats sulphide concentrates at 305 psi and 200 °C. Autoclave feed consists of fresh pretreated concentrate, an acidic oxide slurry recycle as well as other high arsenic sources. The brickwork that is used to construct the five compartments of the vessel must be inspected and repaired periodically. Shutdowns are scheduled to inspect this brickwork and at times replace entire sections of the brick walls or lining. It also provides an opportunity to repair or replace other internal features such as agitator blades or oxygen spargers. Mechanics and contractors are scheduled around the clock to perform the maintenance requirements. There are many safety considerations and precautions that must be taken in order to protect the well-being of the workers and minimize damage to sensitive pieces of equipment. Heat, arsenic and lead contamination and confined space issues are just a few of the hazards involved. The following paper will describe how these safety concerns are addressed and will serve as a guide for future autoclave shutdowns.

Mineralogical cross sections of orebodies on the 300-,600- and 900-foot levels of the Coronation mine have been interpreted in terms of centers of mineralization. The maximum concentration of chalcopyrite occurs closest to these centers, with pyrite and pyrrhotite concentrated some distance away. The magnetite concentrations are farthest removed from the centers. A hydrous halide fluid model is established. Attempts to explain the observed mineralogy by the action of temperature gradients on the fluid model were unsuccessful. Likewise, the action of diffusion alone on the fluid model cannot explain the observed mineral distribution. The concept of attenuation is introduced-i.e., the rate of diffusion of a particle species is related to the product r2 I/ M, the attenuation coefficient, where r is the particle radius and M its molecular weight. Attenuation, acting on the fluid model alone, will not produce the observed mineral distribution, but, when considered together with the action of temperature gradients, the observed mineralogy can be well explained by the combined effects of these two processes on the assumed fluid model.

Abstract -The Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag ore deposits of the Boundary and N-5 zones near Bathurst, New Brunswick, occur in a polydeformed volcano-sedimentary sequence that is part of the Ordovician Tetagouche Group. Massive and disseminated sulfides are hosted by an argillaceous to cherty sedimentary sequence that is stratigraphically underlain by a siliceous fragmental unit and is overlain by a feldspar-rich crystal tuff and related tuffaceous rocks. The deposits have a low iron sulfide con­ tent relative to that of most stratabound sulfide deposits of the Bathurst-Newcastle mining district. The ore is commonly associated with chlorite- and talc-rich sediments. The N-5 deposit is considered to be the fault-displaced extension of the Boundary deposit. The Boundary deposit is estimated to contain 891 000 t grading 3.310Jo Pb, 7.96% Zn, 0.32% Cu and 44 g/t Ag; the estimate for the N-5 zone is 330 000 t grading 3.24% Pb, 7.15% Zn, 0.33% Cu, and 37 g/t Ag. The ore is processed at 1000 tpd at the Heath Steele mill.

A line of nine self-aspirating W emco cells, part of the Rougher circuit at Division Salvador, Codelco Chile, was retrofitted to allow operation with forced air. Each cell could be operated self-aspirated or with compressed air supplied through a 4-inch line equipped with a mass flow meter. Gas dispersion was characterized for the two modes of operation. Metallurgical performance was compared under self-aspirated conditions and with different gas profiles under forced air conditions. Cell characterization demonstrated that with forced-air the cells could not evenly distribute air across the cell volume. Bubble size increased with gas velocity, as expected, with no difference between self-aspirated and forced-air operation. A systematic increase in bubble size down the bank was found. Cumulative bubble surface area flux down the bank showed no major differences between surveys. However, grade-recovery curves revealed that the highest recoveries were invariably obtained with forced air operation. Plotting concentrate mass recovery vs. enrichment ratio showed that the line performance could be controlled over a wider range when forced air was used.

The development of the Granduc mine presents a number of problems which are peculiar to its location and surrounding terrain. Because the development tunnels portal onto an area which is covered by an extensive glacier, and the mountain-side is subjected to dangerous snow slides, it was decided to construct an underground powerhouse to supply the necessary electric power and compressed air. This paper deals with the special problems inherent in the design and -construction of an underground plant. It involves the installation of diesel-electric generating equipment having an aggregate capacity of 1,050 kw.,and of air compressors with a total capacity of 2,400 cfm. Items dis-cussed include the selection of equipment to meet site conditions, the ventilation and cooling of the underground room, and the protection of personnel and equipment from explosions and fire. A short discussion on the automatic supervisory and alarm installation is also included. THE Granduc mine is located 135 miles north of Prince Rupert and 25 miles north of Stew-art. The reactive precipitation of ferrihydrite was studied in a laboratory semi-batch precipitator, where a highly concentrated sodium hydroxide solution was fed into an iron nitrate solution. Instantaneous hydrolysis of iron[III] takes place when the two reagents are mixed generating supersaturation, and leading to immediate precipitation of ferrihydrite via a primary nucleation mechanism then followed by limited crystallite growth to 3 to 7nm. A mathematical model of the semi-batch laboratory precipitator was used to simulate the pH responses during the precipitation of ferrihydrite at different reagent feed rates. The model comprised of interconnected compartments of averaged hydrodynamic conditions, incorporating physically meaningful turbulent mixing time constants. The precipitation process is described by the solute concentration conservation equation incorporating a postulated ferrihydrite primary nucleation model. It was found that the semi-batch precipitator model predicted the experimental pH response reasonably well. The experimental results demonstrated that the reagent feed rate has a critical effect on the course of the precipitation of ferrihydrite, i.e. it is a rate determining step given the fast hydrolysis and precipitation kinetics.

Ultra-grain refinement and high strengthening of metals by accumulative roll bonding (ARB) was widely reported. However, applications of ARB to magnesium alloys were rather limited. In this study, Mg-9%Li-1%Y sheets were applied to ARB at room temperature. Six 0.5 mm thick sheets were stacked and reduced into 0.5 mm thick by four passes. The procedure was repeated up to three cycles, so that the equivalent strain of 6.2 was applied. The sheets show dual phase structure with a (hcp) and ß (bcc). Grains elongates to the rolling direction with increasing number of ARB cycles. After three cycles, fragmented a grains with average size of about 300 nm are uniformly distributed. After the first cycle, the ultimate tensile strength increases to 180 MPa from 133 MPa, while the elongation decreases, however, still high (26%). The tensile strength slightly decreases by the second cycle and does not change at the third cycle. Meanwhile the elongation increases by the second cycle and the sheets show 41% of the elongation after the third cycle.

For improvement in the productivity of tall building projects, table formwork is one of the main methods that have been adopted for slab formwork. Because the table formwork method is an equipment-oriented construction method, the type of lifting equipment and method of operation considerably affects the productivity and cost of the table formwork. It is also important to make an equipment input plan for completing the table formwork within the time given, according to the structural construction cycle. For performing the table formwork, a tower crane or an independent lifting system, and shifting trolleys, are required. However, if an inefficient equipment input plan is made, exorbitant cost may be incurred. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the productivity of a table formwork, considering the type and number of lifting equipment and the number of trolleys inputted, and to suggest quantitative data for making a cost-efficient equipment input plan within the construction duration given. It is expected that the results of this research will be utilized as a basis for cost-efficient equipment input planning.

Manufacturer welded components may suffer from high level of residual stresses which can cause premature cracking and decrease the life of the components if they reach values close to the yield strength of the material. In the present work, a robotized hammer peening technique is simulated by an impact machine and the residual stresses generated by the indentation are measured. To better understand phenomena behind residual stresses relaxation by hammer peening, the impact energy level was changed. 304L steel plates were hammer peened with 10 impacts. The contact between the hammer and sample surface was always at the same location. The strains on the surface close to the impact location were recorded during the test using strain gauges to follow residual stresses variations. At the end of the test residual stresses were measured indepth using hole drilling technique at 8mm from the impact center. The micro-hardness was monitored to evaluate the affected zone by the hammer peening. This approach gave a good estimation of the energy and number of blows to be used for efficient relaxation of the manufactured parts.

"This paper describes the implementation of an expert system for monitoring and control of the NO. 4 autogeneous mill and spiral circuits at Wabush Mines.This process control system incorporated the mill operating expertize of Wabush Mines operating personnel and was implemented to improve spiral iron recovery and mill productivity by:1. Continuously monitoring the mill power draw and ensuring that the mill feedrate is regulated to prevent damage to the mill motor, while simultaneously maintaining the feedrate at or as close as possible to the maximum feedrate determined by the process supervisor.2. Improving control over the spiral density and feed rate.3. Improving control over both tbe rougher and cleaner wash water.4. Reducing the frequency with which pumps are plugged.5. Allowing modifications to be made easily and quickly to test various operating strategies.This system was installed using COMDALE/C, a real-time Expert System for Process Control. It was readily accepted by the process operators and produces higher production performance in comparison to the other 5 parallel mill lines at a lower power draw."

Highland Valley Copper is a conventional truck-shovel mining and flotation concentrator operation located some 75 kilometres southwest of Kamloops, B.C. (Figure 1). The ore is within a porphyry deposit and is mined at a rate of 135,000 metric tonnes per day from two separate open pits. The nearby mill produces concentrates containing 375 million pounds of copper and 5 million pounds of molybdenum metal yearly. Head grades are roughly 0.40% Cu at a 0.23% Cu equivalent cut-off. The strip ratio currently sits at 0.55:1 with waste quantities made up of separate rock and unconsolidated overburden units. From the mill, concentrates are trucked to nearby Ashcroft and then hauled by rail to ocean port facilities in Vancouver. The mine employs 950 persons and is planned to operate until 2009. The operation is a partnership between three owners: TeckCominco (61.4%), BHP Billiton (33.6%), and Highmont Mining (5%). Management is shared by the two principal owners and directed by an appointed committee.

Carbon capture and storage has jumped to the forefront of climate change mitigation efforts for its capacity to sequester large amounts of carbon. Mineral carbonation is one prominent option, mimicking and accelerating the natural weathering process of certain silicate minerals. This has the ability to produce stable carbonate minerals that can store carbon on geologic time scales with little to no risk of leakage. Commercialization of this process is ideally suited for integration into the proposed mining operations at the Turnagain Nickel site in Northern BC. This is due to the abundant supply of suitable ultramafic feedstock material, as well as the economic benefit of sharing costs while reducing net emissions and bringing value to otherwise valueless and costly waste rock. While studies have shown this process to be technologically viable on a laboratory scale, assessing the economic and financial viability of such a process on an industrial scale is necessary. An evaluation of the financial feasibility of integrating mineral carbonation into the mining cycle at Turnagain under a proposed cap-and-trade system is presented.

"Abstract -This paper describes fire assaying and ‘high tech’ alternatives for gold analysis, including advantages and disadvantages of each method. These ‘high tech’ methods include INAA (instrumental neutron activation), aqua regia digestion/AA (atomic absorption), GFAA (graphite furnaceatomic absorption) or ICP/MS (inductively coupled plasma emission mass spectrometry) and a combination of cyanidation with AA, GFAA or ICP/MS methods.Fire assay remains the stalwart among analytical methods for gold but, even with its multiple analytical finishes, is not fool-proof for recovering 100% of the gold present. Consumers of assays should not blindly trust the assay results without consideration of quality control data. Laboratories can and do make mistakes. Some of these can be easily discovered if you do your own due diligence. All these measures should ensure that gold analysis values from successive campaigns and from different laboratories meet acceptable levels of accuracy and precision, and can be correlated together, particularly when they occur in neighboring holes. This is essential just as much for prospect evaluation as for project feasibility."

Dust abatement is possible on bulk materials, whether conveyed or stockpiled. Minimum (ppm) quantities of chemical additives can efficiently and rapidly control dust of conveyed substrates with no effect on floatation chemistry. Top coating of large surface areas can control surface dust and wind erosion. Environmental and toxicity impact must be considered in any treatment, especially on areas with percolation runoff, leachates, or limited containment. The most effective dust control is preventing release of substrate fines rather than trapping and removing air borne dust. Techniques to prevent release of fines from conveyed substrates will be discussed. Dust control dynamics are a very complex combination of solid phase physical and chemical interactions between the substrate and the fines. ?Smart Technology? products permit dust abatement of stockpiled substrates and tailing fields with no environmental impact. Using ?Smart Technology?, the dust abatement products remain active and can re-seal damaged areas. Efficient, low environmental and toxicity impact, dust control will be demonstrated through case studies where these principals have been applied.

"The Kidd Creek concentrator is situated adjacent to Highway 101, twenty-four kilometres east of the center of the city of Timmins, Ontario. Sulphide ore, received by train from the minesite twenty-nine kilometres away, is processed at a rate of twelve thousand metric tonnes per day. Saleable concentrates of copper, zinc, lead and tin are produced.The concentrator contains secondary crushing, grinding, flotation, gravity separation and concentrate handling facilities. The total concentrator manpower complement is one hundred and sixty-four which includes supervision and operating personnel. Twenty-one shift personnel are required to operate the processes involved and they occupy fifteen different operating positions in addition to that of the supervisor. With more and more industrial construction projects implementing RFID and other sensor-based technologies on fabrication and project sites, new innovative processes are needed to help automatically read and re-position RFID tags while reducing the cost to deploy RFID infrastructure over large areas. RFID tags are being used on construction sites to help identify the location of materials, equipment and personnel to aid in finding project critical materials and equipment required to construct the industrial facility on time and on budget. This research provides a cost-effective process for reading tens of thousands of RFID tags over large project sites from outdoor laydown yards, to warehouses to the workface where the materials and tagged equipment are installed. Based on the collected RFID and sensor data, localization mechanisms determine the most recent coordinates of the tagged components. The paper will cover analysis of RFID collected data and key lessons learned from a commercial deployment of the SiteSense® system with one Alberta-based industrial contractor, JV Driver Fabricators, at an 80-Acre module, pipe spool and structural steel fabrication site.
