"The Adams mine, operated by Jones & Laughlin Mining Company, Ltd. and located near Kirkland Lake, Ontario, produces one million tons of iron ore pellets per year. This paper briefly describes the mining and concentrating operation and deals mainly with the operation of the pellet plant. The orebody consists of fine-grained magnetite and some hematite, with alternating layers of chert, and is mined by conventional open-pit methods. After crushing and grinding, the ore is concentrated by magnetic separation and flotation. Agglomeration is accomplished by the grate-kiln pelletizing process. The plant layout and general operation will be discussed in detail."

In the framework of the optimization of Teniente Converter operation the new system of automatic flux feeding through gar-gun was implemented in the Potrerillos Smelter, Codelco Chile, Salvador Division. The control algoritm based on simple iron and silica balance adjusted by empirical coefficients was incorporated in the logical programmer. The programmer works in real time gathering information from the plant instrumentation events and introduced chemical assays of concentrate, slag and flux. Through the auto-tuning of the automatic operation the criterions of optimal flux dosage were determined. Four month of operation of the automatic flux feeding system demonstrated the stabilization of magnetite content in the slag in the narrow range from 18 to 20% and the decrease of flux consumption, corresponding to annual savings US$ 340,000. Additionally, the automatic system helps operators in the control room in fast determination of optimal fluxing and avoid the errors in flux dosage affecting the slag quality and its impact on refractory wear.

"The Normetal mine is about 7 miles east of the Ontario-Quebec boundary, and 13 miles north of the town of Dupuy on the Canadian National railway. The mine workings are largely on lots 44 and 45 in the south half of range 10, Desmeloizes township.The surface outcrop is reported to have been discovered by a trapper previous to 1925, but the details are obscure. The property was originally owned by the Canadian Exploration Company of Amos, Quebec, and was later transferred to Abana Mines, Limited. The latter Company carried out underground work from two shafts down to the 550-foot level. The property was acquired by Normetal Mining Corporation in 1931 and was reopened in 1933, when development work was carried down to the 800-foot level. The mine was closed down in 1935 because metal prices did not justify production at that time. It was reopened early in 1937 and milling commenced in September of that year. To the end of 1945, a total of 1,497,- 169 tons of ore was milled from which was produced 184,533 tons of copper concentrates containing 84,738,368 lb. copper, 2,744,100 oz. silver, 26,230 oz. gold, and 153,524 tons of zinc concentrates containing 163,752,433 lb . zinc."

"Schaft Creek is a calc-alkaline porphyry Cu-Mo-(Au) deposit located in northwestern British Columbia. The deposit formed in a volcanic arc setting, likely on a back-arc rifted continental fragment. It is hosted by Late Triassic basaltic to andesitic volcanic rocks of the Stuhini Group (Stikine Terrane), and is associated with porphyritic granodiorite dikes emanating from the nearby Hickman batholith. The age of the Hickman batholith is approximately constrained here by a composite U-Pb zircon date of 222.1 ± 9.6 Ma, which is in broad agreement with a well-constrained age for mineralization at Schaft Creek of 222.0 ± 0.8 Ma (Re-Os molybdenite). The deposit is in most respects typical of calc-alkaline porphyry systems, but displays silica-poor sericite-chlorite alteration in mafic country rocks in place of classic phyllic altera¬tion. The deposit comprises three distinct, but related, zones: the northern Paramount zone, the Main zone, and the West Breccia zone. Two phases of mineralization are observed. The first phase occurs as hydro-thermal veins and breccias, and minor disseminations. It consists of bornite, chalcopyrite, molybdenite, and pyrite with potassic and sericite-chlorite alteration. The second phase is minor and consists of veins of molybdenite ± specularite, as well as Cu-Pb-Zn sulfide veins without any significant corresponding alteration. Extensive structural modification has affected the deposit both during and after its formation.Schaft Creek est un gîte porphyrique de Cu-Mo-(Au) calco-alkalin situé dans le nord-ouest de la Colombie Britannique. Ce gîte s’est formé dans environnement d’arc volcanique, probablement situé sur un fragment continental bordé par un bassin d’arrière-arc. Le gîte est encaissé par les roches volcaniques basaltiques à andésitiques du Groupe de Stuhini (Terrane de Stikine) d’âge Triasique tardif, et est associé à des dykes de granodiorite porphyrique provenant du batholithe de Hickman avoisinant. L’âge du batholithe de Hickman est estimé par un âge U-Pb composite sur zircon de 222.1 ± 9.6 Ma, lequel est grossièrement en accord avec l’âge de la minéralisation de Schaft Creek, estimé a 222.0 ± 0.8 Ma (Re-Os sur molybdénite).Ce gisement, bien qu’à plusieurs égards typique des systèmes porphyriques calco-alcalins, présente une altération en séricite-chlorite pauvre en silice dans l’encaissant mafique a la place de l’altération phyllique classique. Ce gîte comprend trois zones distinctes bien que connexes : la zone Paramount au Nord, la zone Principale et la zone West Breccia. Deux phases de minéralisation sont observées. La première phase se présente sous forme de veines et de brèches hydrothermales ainsi qu’en disséminations mineures et consiste en bornite, en chalcopyrite, en molybdénite et en pyrite avec une altération potassique et en séricite-chlorite. La seconde phase est mineure et consiste en veines de molybdénite ± spécularite ainsi qu’en veines de sulfures de Cu-Pb-Zn sans association à une altération particulière. "Second only to profitability (but not always), productivity is the most sought after measurement for any operation. Whether it is in mining, manufacturing, construction, etc. managers always strive to know how productive various plants are. Even the Federal Government publishes, on a monthly basis, the nation's factory productivity.Just what is productivity and how is it measured? This is an important topic that needs definition. There could be as many definitions as there are people who use it. In the mining industry, the problems of defining productivity would be analogous to the definition of equipment availability. Each mine uses its own definition to suit its needs. Webster's Dictionary primary definition for productivity is ""the quality or state of being productive,"" with productive defined as ""yielding or furnishing results"". This is a definition open to a broad spectrum of interpretation. A discussion of how productivity is currently used in the mining industry and an introduction to a potentially different approach to its measurement and meaning is outlined in this paper.Defining ProductivityTypically, mining companies track several productivity measurements. These are partial measurements and can include the following: tons per specific equipment class per hour, tons per man-hour, and tons per shift. None of these, however, track the over -all performance of an operation, that is, a unit of output per unit of input.For a mining operation, output can be defined as the ore for mill processing. Input includes the required components of production to get to the first step of processing.The Wesbter's Dictionary definition exposes a major fault with the popular conception of productivity. The critical issue of accountability is not addressed. Anyone can produce, but how effectively and efficiently are resources used? Quantifying an inclusive measurement is difficult. Statistics referring to an increase in productivity are often published. For example, the statement, ""gold productivity has increased by 10%"" has many potentially dangerous interpretations. One must ask, what does this statistic really mean? Did gold companies produce 10%” more gold? Were less manpower or equipment required to produce an equivalent amount of gold? Did ore grades increase resulting in more ounces of gold produced, etc. Obviously, production and productivity can have similar implied applications and meanings, but also two different, distinct meanings.To mitigate a problem like this, a standard needs to be developed within the mining industry. Because of varying ore grade, changing waste to ore ratios, different mining methods, etc. all of which have a direct impact on mining, development of a standard is difficult. Kendrick(1) discusses the use of Total Factor Productivity as a productivity measurement. Summarized, the total factor productivity measure is an indication of the change in efficiency in the use of basic labour and capital factors associated with an operation.This measurement has little meaning when calculated at a given point in time. It should be an on-going calculation, tracking an operation over a period of time, to evaluate trends. These trends can be used to determine if an operation's productivity is what it should be, and alert management to potential problems before they become major and adversely affect an operation."

The exhausted Santa Barbara open pit mine (Tuscany, Italy), owned by the main electric power company in Italy (ENEL S.p.A,) extracted lignite as a fuel for the Santa Barbara thermoelectric power plant. The mining activity led to the excavation of a wide slope (with maximum height of 200 m and a planar extension of about 1300 m x 500 m) in the Shale Limestone Chaotic Complex (SLCC) (Figure 1). Since the beginning of its excavation the slope underwent rotational landslides and diffuse instability phenomena. From a geotechnical point of view the SLCC represents a typical bimrock (block-in-matrix rock) (Medley 1994, Medley 2002, Medley 2007) characterized by a mixture of a highly sheared, scaly-fabric, clayey matrix and calcareous blocks ranging from a few millimetres to tens of metres in size. Since the geometrical properties of blocks (grain-size distribution, shape, orientation and volumetric proportion) have been proved to influence the mechanical behaviour of bimrocks (Lindquist & Goodman 1994, Goodman & Ahlgren 2000, Kim et al. 2004, Sonmez et al. 2006), the aim of the present study is to investigate the geometrical properties of calcareous blocks in order to properly characterize the mechanical behaviour of the SLCC bimrock and to further assess the stability of the slope. Block size-distribution and shape were investigated by means of advanced image analysis techniques of SLCC pictures taken in the field. Geostatistical semivariograms and variographic maps were also used in order to investigate the anisotropy of block spatial distribution. Finally, in-situ large sized sieving tests were carried out to investigate the volumetric block proportion within the clayey matrix.

In the spring of 1977, Revenue Canada announced its intention to proceed in 1978 with a plan to impute a taxable benefit on interest-free and low-interest loans provided to employees. Such loan arrangements are often an important aspect of the compensation packages provided by many companies to their employees. Since the original announcement, there have been many submissions to Revenue Canada opposing this change, and the Finance Minister has now brought down a compromise solution with the introduction of a proposed amendment to the Income Tax Act. The amendment, which would not take effect until the 1979 taxation year, would require an employee, a shareholder or a related person to include a benefit in income measured as the difference between the interest on any such loan computed at bank prime rate and any interest actually paid. Only the amount of such a benefit in excess of $500 in a particular year would be required to be included in income. Of particular interest is the exclusion from these benefit rules of loans up to $50,000 in respect of the purchase of a house on the relocation of an employee and loans provided for the purchase of shares of an employer corporation.

An advanced laboratory-scale weathering apparatus has been developed at McGill University to study the effects of weathering (ambient temperature oxidation) on the self-heating of sulphides. Previous work by the authors has shown that the problematic self-heating of sulphides is inherently linked to the degree of oxidation (weathering) of the minerals: un-oxidized active sulphides exhibit little or no self-heating while the same material when weathered can generate extensive self-heating bringing temperatures well above 100 0C. In this study the effects of environmental conditions (weathering time, ambient temperature, sample moisture, relative humidity, and oxygen content) were evaluated with respect to the self-heating response of a pentlandite-pyrrhotite nickel sulphide concentrate.

"Oilfield cementing has been utilized in the industry since the turn of the century. Originally, wells were shallow and criteria for well integrity were somewhat limited. Since that time, wells have stretched the envelope in depth, temperature, and pressure. Environmental regulations have also become more stringent, thus, the importance of hydraulic isolation between permeable zones, and between these zones and surface has become more and more important.Initially, oilfield cements were comprised predominantly of construction cement and very limited additives. As time progressed, additives were incorporated to control pumping time or placement time and little effort was placed on optimizing actual components within the cement chemistry. This paper presents issues and concerns created by adding just one new component to the fundamental chemistry of an oilfield cement."

"Platinum-group minerals (PGM) typically occur in such low concentrations that quantitative mineralogical evaluation is difficult or impossible. The FEI MLA system used by Vale Base Metals Technology Development has been successfully employed to produce large PGM data sets that are statistically robust. The MLA Sparse Phase Liberation mapping routine produces false colored images that accurately document mineral textures, including intergrowths between various platinum group minerals and between PGMs and other tellurides and sulfides. MLA PGM search results can be used in conjunction with mineral chemistry to calculate platinumgroup element distribution to minerals and the MLA PGM images can be used to produce model grade-recovery curves.INTRODUCTIONThe platinum-group minerals (PGM) found in Sudbury area deposits have been extensively catalogued and reviewed by many authors including, but not limited to: Farrow and Lightfoot (2002), Cabri and Laflamme (1984; 1976) and Cabri (1981). The PGM list currently used has 12 minerals summarized in Table 1. As noted by Farrow and Lightfoot (2002), platinum-group minerals in Sudbury are dominated by tellurides, bismuth-tellurides and arsenides, with an absence of platinum-group element (PGE) sulphides or ferro-platinum alloys such as tetraferroplatinum - PtFe."

The corrosion and wear properties of a series of chrome white iron (CWI) castings were study using electrochemical and low-stress sliding abrasion tests. The results confirm that the corrosion resistance of these materials is largely dependant on the quantity of chromium in the matrix, while the wear resistance is mainly controlled by the volume fraction of chromium carbides. A pseudo-wear/corrosion map is developed to identify alloy compositions that may be suited for erosion/corrosion conditions.

This paper develops a series of three-dimensional simulations for the Bayou Choctaw Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The U.S. Department of Energy plans to leach two new caverns and convert of one of the existing caverns within the Bayou Choctaw salt dome to expand its petroleum reserve storage capacity. An existing finite element mesh from previous analyses is modified by adding two caverns and increasing the size of existing Cavern 102. The structural integrity of the three expansion caverns and the interaction between all the caverns in the dome are investigated. The impacts of the expansion on underground creep closure, surface subsidence, infrastructure stability, and well integrity are quantified. The results show that from a structural viewpoint, the locations of the two newly proposed expansion caverns are acceptable, and all three expansion caverns can be safely constructed and operated.

"This paper discusses the primary collector adsorption onto a sulphide mineral in mixed collector systems to understand its adsorption mechanism. UV-vis measurements were performed to identify the primary collector concentration adsorbed on pyrite, and the adsorption kinetics under different conditions were compared to distinguish their difference between single and mixed collector systems. Small amount of secondary collector addition prior to the primary collector addition significantly improved the adsorption kinetics of primary one. The result was explained by the combination of two previously proposed mechanisms (i.e., different adsorption site mechanism and multi-layer product mechanism). This study showed UV-vis measurement as an effective tool to study mixed collector adsorption behaviour.INTRODUCTIONCollectors are surfactants composed of heteropolar molecules with a non-polar and a polar group (Lotter & Bradshaw, 2010). In a froth flotation process, the function of collector is to improve the hydrophobicity of target minerals and selectively float them with the aid of gas bubbles. Because of the chemical or physical attraction between the polar group and the mineral surfaces sites, collector molecules adsorb on the particle surface with the non-polar group assigned towards the bulk solution (i.e., water), thus the mineral particle surface becomes hydrophobic (Wills & Napier-Munn, 2006).Thiol collectors are major collectors widely used in sulphide mineral flotation. Potassium amyl xanthate (PAX), dithiocarbamate (DTC), dithiophosphate (DTP), mecaptobenzothiazole (MBT) are some common thiol collectors. Previous studies reported that some mixed collectors systems enhanced the flotation performance (e.g., Bradshaw, 1997; Bradshaw et al., 1998; Rao & Forssberg, 1997). Thiol collector mixtures are often used in the flotation of sulphide ores, and discussed with the synergistic benefits (Bradshaw et al., 1998) which include lowering the total collector dosage requirements, improving the sulphide recovery and the rate of flotation as well as the improving the froth characteristics. The current paper mainly considered the mixture between two thiol collectors (PAX and DTC, considered as a weaker and selective collector, and stronger and less selective collector, respectively (Bradshaw, 1997)) to further understand their adsorption mechanism that should assist in improving the flotation performance of refractory gold ore."

This paper describes the back analysis of the Pavoncelli tunnel, an hydraulic tunnel which was excavated between 1904 and 1915 in South of Italy and experienced severe damages during the 1980 Irpino-Lucano earthquake. A numerical simulation which is intended to study the behaviour of the tunnel during this seismic event is presented, also accounting for the swelling phenomenon that took place during and after construction.

In New Brunswick, significant potash deposits are intimately associated with rocks of the Lower Carboniferous Windsor Group. To date, two deposits high in sylvinite, up to 20 m thick, have been confirmed at depths between 490 and 1,035 m below surface near Plumweseep and Salt Springs. These areas are currently under development by the Potash Company of America and the Denison-Potacan Potash Company respectively. A third area, near Lower Millstream, is also known to contain potash-bearing evaporites and is now being explored by BP Exploration Canada Ltd. All three areas are situated in the western half of the Moncion Subbasin and are within 25 km of Sussex. Numerous similarities in stratigraphy, thickness, mineralogy and structure suggest that deposition of evaporites throughout much of southern New Brunswick was contemporaneous and extended over a considerable area. Future opportunities for potash exploration in the province thus seem excellent. A number of large unexplored areas remain in the Moncion and Cumberland Subbasins and in parts

Copper powder generated during the treatment of electro-metallurgical bleeds by reactive electro- dialysis (RED) had totally reduced the content of ferric ions in acidic synthetic electrolytes (Cu (II)- Fe (III) – H2SO4). In batch and columnar experiments 100% of the ferric ions were reduced to ferrous ions with an extremely high kinetics. A preliminary conceptual design for reducing ferric ions based on an integrate RED- Column for treatment of electro-winning bleed system is discussed. This system is able to recover simultaneously sulfuric acid and copper powder, which will reduce ferric ions. INTRODUCTION It is well known the negative effect of ferric ions in the copper electro-winning process. The increase of ferric content in the electrolyte reduces the current efficiency, i.e., there is an increase in the energy consumption, and changes the surface morphology of the copper deposit (Das, Gopala & Krishna, 1996; Vargas & Parra, 2013). The increase of the specific energy consumption due to the loss of current efficiency occurs by the reduction reaction of ferric to ferrous ions in the cathode, at the anode the ferrous ions are slowly oxidized to ferric ions (Shaw, Dreisinger, Lancaster, Richmond & Tomlinson, 2004). To control the level of iron in the electrolyte, bleeds are needed; this bleed electrolyte containing copper, sulfuric acid, cobalt, iron and other impurities normally is waster, which increased the production cost of the plant (Milbourne, 2002; Mckevitt & Dreisinger, 2009). Then, permanent efforts oriented to treat those bleeds to avoid losses of valuables components are made; among them are use ion exchange resins (Shaw et al., 2004; Mackevitt et al., 2009), chemical precipitation (Izadi, Mohebbi, Amiri & Izadi, 2017) and electrodialysis (Cortés, Ipinza & Ibáñez, 2013). The last one allows to the simultaneous recovery of sulfuric acid and copper powder. If one of the valuables obtained by treating the bleed can be used to reduce ferric ion concentration in the electrolyte could be an important asset. This issue at laboratory scale is reported in this work, the use of copper powder, generated by reactive electro-dialysis when treating synthetic acidic electro-metallurgical bleeds, for reducing ferric ions in acidic electrolytes.

Many owners are also concerned with employee's well being and their company's public image.EmployeesJob security and a good income are probably still the most important demands, however, as time goes by, employees are also demanding more involvement in safety issues, working conditions, and even how work is done.The PublicThe public requires acceptable environmental standards, as well as enjoying the prosperity supplied by a successful operation.How are Mines Managed?Most mines are managed very traditionally. The basic credo is that the managers make the decisions, and the hourly, and junior salaried employees do what they are told. Clearly this is the extreme case, epitomized by the long service shift boss who might say ""It took twenty-years to become a shift boss, and no miner is going to tell me what to do"" .There are some exceptions, two notable ones being Campbell-Chibougamau, and T.G.S. (now Kidd Creek Mines) which, in very different circumstances, decided on a more participative style.Campbell-Chibougamau, having closed down due to unprofitable operations, reopened, using a team structure with working leaders, and a system for sharing gains against cost targets with employees. Although the system has some problems, and development miners are bonused conventionally, this has been a basically successful program.Texasgulf Sulphur, a company with a history of non-union operations, and a participative management style, made a corporate decision to operate their Kidd Creek Mine in the same way. The orebody was rich enough to allow them the luxury to do this, but they have never had a strike, so perhaps they have more than saved the cost of the benefits and salaries they needed to pay. They also reward employees with a stock distribution scheme based on service and earnings."

In his report on the Coal Resources of Southern Vancouver Island, Mr. J. D. MacKenzie stated that: "For various reasons it has been imagined that the coal deposits of Vancouver Island are extremely large and readily available." "Unfortunately," he added, "neither of these assumptions is correct." The chief disability under which the Island mines now labor does not concern the extent of the deposits. There is ample coal for the present demand. It does, however, concern the availability of the coal. If it were readily available the fuel-oil competition would not be serious and there would be no competition with Alberta, American, Welsh, or Australian coal along the Pacific Coast, for Vancouver Island coal could be produced at a price that would cut out all competition. The outstanding operating difficulty common to all Island mines is the extreme irregularity of the coal seams. To most people a coal seam is synonymous with uniformity, and in most coal seams a condition found at one point will be repeated at other points in the same seam throughout the basin. The accompanying drawings show how very far this is from being true in the Cassidy mine, which, in many respects, is typical of Vancouver Island mines. Figure I is a plan covering about 160 acres of the Douglas seam, the only workable seam in this part of the district. The area shown represents what has been the best producing part of the mine and indicates the very large percentage of the seam where the coal is either entirely lacking or so small in amount that it cannot be profitably recovered.
