"A world-scale surface mining operation is associated with the Syncrude Oils ands Plant. Each day over 300 000tonnes of oils and are mined and transported to the process plant to produce 129 000 barrels of synthetic crude oil.Examples of research and maintenance engineering programs which have resulted in substantial gains in dragline and bucket wheel conveyor system productivities are discussed. Two central themes within these programs, which go beyond the usual technical support associated with a large surface mining operation, are pursued:1. the approach taken to determine the causes of component failures and provide Syncrude performance specifications to allow manufacturing industry to respond with more appropriate products; and2. systems and equipment studies which have led to higher productivity in the major mining equipment and the development of an auxiliary feed system.IntroductionA world-scale open pit mining operation is associated with the Syncrude Oils ands Plant located near Fort McMurray in northern Alberta. Over 300 000 tonnes per day of oils and are mined and transported to the process plant. Fifty million barrel s of synthetic crude oil were produced in 1987, which represents 10010 of Canada's crude oil requirement.following tree clearing and surface drainage, overburden is removed by mobile equipment ahead of oils and mining. Draglines excavate the 40 m depth of feed grad e oils and which is windrowed on the dragline bench. Bucketwheels reclaim the oils and from the windrows for transport by conveyor systems to the extraction plant surge pile.The Syncrude mine is operated in four essentially equal quadrants, each serviced by a dragline and a bucketwheel conveyor system. The mining face in each quadrant is approximately 2 km long and reclaimed oils and is transported by 1830 mm shift able conveyors over distances up to 6 km. Individual conveyors vary in length up to 2500 m.The Syncrude plant started operating in late 1978, and Figure I shows the mine production history through to the end o f 1987. Annual production volumes have increased from 50 million tonnes of oils and in 1979 to 105 million tonnes in 1987.The period from 1982has seen a change in operating philosophy, away from striving for very high production rates, to operating at sustained targetted levels within the measured capacity of the equipment. Higher over-all production volumes have resulted from being able to operate for more hours at these rates. This same period has also seen much greater emphasis placed on routine inspection of the equipment and planned preventive maintenance to avoid problems which could otherwise impact on production."

At 14%, the representation of women working in the mining industry is the lowest among primary industry categories in Canada1. With reference to mining operations and senior leadership, the gap in the industry is even more pronounced. In an effort to narrow the gender gap, recent industry, education, and policy efforts have been made to increase the number of women entering the industry through career awareness and early career recruitment strategies. These strategies implied that by increasing the numbers of women entering the industry there would be a natural progression of women into the hierarchies of organizations. Efforts to retain women in the industry have focused around removing career barriers such as reviewing flexible work practices and programs directed at work life balance. At this time, these efforts have resulted in negligible fluctuations to the gender gap within the industry. This research investigates the under-representation of Highly Qualified Women (HQW), and the interaction of workplace culture on their career advancement and retention within the industry. HQW (women with a bachelor?s degree or higher) are the focus of the work as they represent an essential source of leadership and technical capacity for mining organizations. This paper is based on the results of a survey of 170 HQW working in the Canadian mining sector. The findings from this research suggest that HQWs careers in mining are stalled, despite a strong indication by respondents of interest in their professional career advancement. With regards to workplace culture, respondents indicated that blatant forms of gender discrimination have been reduced in mining workplaces; however, exclusion from informal networks, implicit bias and subtler forms of workplace discrimination persist. Utilizing a framework to assess the workplace culture for women in attracting and retaining their employment, respondents provided detailed information on the aspects of workplace culture that are most problematic in relation to women?s career development in mining. Women consistently identified problematic workplace culture as a significant barrier to the career advancement and retention of women within the industry. The representation of women within the labour force will likely remain stagnant until the industry addresses workplace culture within the industry, and makes strategic efforts to develop inclusive cultures throughout mining and supportive organizations.

"Decreasing gold-in-ore grades is one of the main drivers of poorer productivity and rapidly escalating unit costs. Grinding costs, water use and reagent consumption are all intimately related to the ore grade processed. Various pre-concentration technologies have been developed that can be applied at various stages of crushing prior to ore grinding. This paper will review the amenability of ores to coarse particle barren gangue rejection for fine crush sizes in the pumpable particle size range (i.e., particles between 5 mm and 0.3 mm in size). The liberation of oxide gangue achieved during crushing is evaluated by proxy using sink-float analysis and the deportments of gold, sulfur, and arsenic into sinks and floats are monitored. Amenability of gangue rejection by continuous gravity separation is evaluated after various crushing modes (vertical shaft impact crushing, cone crushing, and HPGR crushing). The potential to identify coarse particle mineral association and liberation using three-dimensional x-ray computed tomography will be discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe aim of research in this area is to explore some of the attributes which make some ores amenable to preconcentration, or rejection of a significant component of the feed mass to tailings at a coarse liberation size. Characteristics such as ore type, mineralogy, breakage pattern, particle shape, and liberation characteristics may need to be examined to identify amenability to pre-concentration amenability.It is intended to focus on continuous gangue rejection in the pumpable size range (0.3–5.0 mm) as this remains one of the key opportunities to reduce processing costs through a combination of techniques including screening (for mineral differentiation rather than size classification only) and gravity separation (using jigs). This is to be contrasted to conventional preconcentration as performed with automatic ore sorters."

Recent laboratory studies show that several bacteria, known to be human pathogens, die when they come in contact with copper and copper alloy surfaces. The amount of live bacteria drops by several orders of magnitude, to zero, on copper alloys in a few hours. In contrast, no reduction is seen in the concentration of live organisms on stainless steel during the six-hour test period. Aluminum painted and coated surfaces and plastics would show behavior similar to stainless steel and show no effect. Coatings and other surfaces claiming to be antimicrobial showed little to no effect. These results suggest the selection of copper alloys for surfaces exposed to human touch can materially assist in reducing the transmission of infectious organisms. In order to make antimicrobial claims in the United States, the approval of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is required. The EPA-required efficacy testing is described and the test results are summarized. It is anticipated, that once regulatory approval is obtained, that this will facilitate the introduction of antimicrobial copper alloys in hospitals, nursing homes and other healthcare facilities, as well as schools, and public buildings. Some of the application and barriers, to entry into the healthcare markets are mentioned.

The PQ Deeps (PQD) is a production zone located at Newmont’s Musselwhite Mine in northern Ontario. Development started for the PQD in late 2017, and the first stopes were mined starting in early 2021. Unlike most historic longitudinal stoping of narrower orebodies at Musselwhite, the PQD is a wider orebody following the plunge of a fold hinge and is extracted primarily by transverse stoping. Some geotechnical challenges were experienced during early stoping efforts, necessitating design changes throughout late 2021 and early 2022 to optimize the stope design. This work describes the mining methods and design changes to transverse PQD stoping based on geotechnical lessons learned during early stoping efforts.

In 1979, John Peacey and William (Bill) Davenport published The Iron Blast Furnace Theory and Practice billed as "An up to date and comprehensive treatment of blast furnaces from fundamental principles to modern operations" (back cover). As a 1979 graduate of McGill University’s Metallurgical Engineering program, I belonged to the last "beta" student group which completed the prescribed blast furnace course work before The Iron Blast Furnace Theory and Practice was published. As my career developed, I become an international blast furnace consultant and have worked with blast furnace operators and raw material suppliers on 5 continents. The blast furnace is the dominate iron making process responsible for 70% of global steel production. Blast furnace engineers have implemented many improvements by manipulating the blast furnace process metallurgy using the principles presented by Peacey and Davenport to reduce coke consumption and increase oxygen usage and blast furnace productivity. This paper briefly summarizes some key principles presented by Peacey and Davenport (1979), describes process improvements made by blast furnace operators over the 35 years since The Iron Blast Furnace Theory and Practice was published and outlines important future developments in blast furnace technology.

"The Williams Mine is Canada's largest gold producer, with annual production of some 500 000 ounces of gold from two million tonnes of ore. Highly mechanized and automated underground mining practices are utilized at the property in order to help achieve high levels of productivity and the most cost-effective mining possible.Planning and design parameters for the underground ore handling system at the Williams Mine are described in this paper. Particular reference is made to the considerations that were built into the system to provide maximum operating flexibility through the use of multiple orepass systems, portable low profile jaw crushers, underground conveyors and automated hoisting equipment.IntroductionThe Williams Mine is situated in the Hernlo area of northwestern Ontario, approximately 40 Ian east of the town of Marathon (Fig. I). It is operated by the Williams Operating Corporation, which is owned equally by Teck Corporation and Corona Corporation, and is one of three adjacent properties forming the HernIo gold camp.The mine commenced operation in October 1985 at a nominal production rate of 3000 tpcd. Through an ongoing capital development program, winch was completed in late 1989, the production rate at the property was increased to its current level of 6000 tpcd. This paper describes the mine planning process and the evolution of current mining strategies with particular reference to the underground ore handling system .HistoryGold mineralization was discovered in 1944 in the Hemlo area of Northern Ontario, near the north shore of Lake Superior. A year later, 11 claims were staked over the showing and subsequently patented by the late Dr. Jack Kerr Williams.Over the next 35 years, other claims were subsequently staked, explored and abandoned in the immediate area of the 11 patented claims . In 1980 a predecessor of the Corona Corporation acquired claims adjoining the Williams property to the east. Drilling on this claim group started early in 1981 and intersected the Hemlo orebody in May of that year. In December 1981, Corona Corporation entered into an option agreement with Teck Corporation to explore and develop the property.A drilling program by LAC Minerals on the II patented claims discovered the Williams orebody in March 1982. The mine started production in 1985, pouring its first official bar of gold on December 6 of that year. Corona Corporation was awarded ownership of the Williams Mine conclusively by a decision of the Supreme Court of Canada on August 11, 1989. The court's ruling ended a legal dispute with LAC Minerals over the property initiated eight years earlier."

This paper presents a technique to determine the direction of velocity in liquid aluminum (Al) by measuring the temperature distribution within a cylindrical rod while it is inserted into the flow. The heating pattern of the rod is a result of the interaction of the thermal fields of the rod with the liquid Al. This interaction freezes aluminum onto the cylinder in a characteristic pattern and as a result the temperature response within the rod also follows a distinctive heating pattern. Monitoring the temperature within the cylindrical rod as a function of spatial and temporal coordinates, the direction of velocity can be inferred. Experimental research work involving liquid Al was conducted at the University of Toronto using the Revolving Liquid Metal Tank (RLMT). The RLMT is a resistance furnace which can hold up to 50kg of liquid Al. In this RLMT tangential velocities up to 0.35m1s can be generated. Experimental data for different superheat and magnitude of velocity demonstrate that the sensor records different heating patterns under different fluid flow conditions. Using the transient temperature information, the direction of velocity of the molten Al flow field can be detected.

The finite element method (FEM) has been applied to investigate the stress fields and deformation of a TiN/Ti-6A1-4V coating/substrate system subjected to nanoindentation. MSC Patran and MSC Marc were used to prepare the three-dimensional finite element models and to perform the simulations of the Vickers nanoindentation experiments. Pure silicon and TiN/Ti-6A1-4V coating/substrate system were analyzed. The properties of the materials were assumed to be homogeneous and isotropic with a linear hardening behavior. The reverse method was used to extract material properties, such as the yield stress and strain hardening coefficient, from the numerical results by comparing the simulated indentation load vs. penetration depth (P-h) curves with those obtained experimentally. Both non-linear elastic and non-linear elastic-plastic analyses were carried out for the coating/substrate system. The results are given for four different coating thicknesses.

Nano-scale Al-(Fe,Mo)-Si dispersoids form during solution treatment in grain interiors (intradendritic regions) of cast Al7Si0.5Cu0.3Mg alloyed with 0.3Mo (wt.%). Unlike the Q-Al5Cu2Mg8Si6 and ?-Al2Cu age-hardening precipitates which coarsen resulting in loss of strength in Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloys, these Mo-containing dispersoids are thermally stable and retain their strengthening effect at elevated temperatures. Consequently, the age-hardened Al7Si0.5Cu0.3Mg0.3Mo (wt.%) exhibits high strength and creep resistance at 300 °C.

Inco Limited has been evaluating options for streamlining the overall flowsheet at its Sudbury, Ontario operations to improve productivity and to minimize the cost of at¬mospheric emissions reduction. Some of the flowsheets being considered include vari¬ous levels of copper/nickel separation at the Clarabelle Mill where all Inco's Sudbury Basin ores are processed. This paper reports on the laboratory and miniplant studies car¬ried out during the flowsheet development for a commercial Cu/Ni separation plant. There are two potential feed streams for Cu/Ni separation. It was determined that Cu/Ni separation from the rougher concentrate requires no regrind, and a very clean copper concentrate is produced, but the recovery of copper is limited to about 70% from ore. Cu/Ni separation is more difficult from the bulk concentrate because of the presence of excess flotation reagents in the slurry and due to locked particles. By replacing the slurry water with clean process water, and by addition of some hydrogen peroxide, entrainment is minimized and excess reagents are removed from the surface, providing a satisfactory separation of copper from nickel. Fine regrinding is required to increase liberation of the locked particles and to obtain 85% copper recovery with minimal nickel contamination of the concentrate.

"The Bathurst area has recorded mining production as early as 1837, although the bulk of the production has come in recent years. Production has been mainly from the well-known massive sulphide deposits, but vein, gossan, and a variety of other deposits have also been mined. This paper summarizes the history of the mined deposits, along with tonnages and grades produced. A number of ""firsts"" have been noted in the Bathurst area. The A Zone deposit, located in the Heath Steele area, was the first in the world discovered using airborne electromagnetic methods. Heap leaching of gold from the gossan zone at Caribou was the first operation of its kind in Canada. The Keymet mine was the first base metal (lead-zinc) mine in New Brunswick. For the past few years, the Brunswick No. 12 mine has been one of the largest zinc mines in the world.IntroductionThe Bathurst area (Fig. 1) first had mining production in 1837 when copper was mined from a deposit on the Nepisiquit river (MacKenzie, 1958). "Throughout the history of mining at the Dome, gold has been found in a number of different rock types and in association with a number of different structural settings. Diamond drilling plays an important role in the evaluation of the stratigraphic and structural features which control ore deposition. The main function of diamond drilling is to locate favourable areas of mineralization.To date, over 20,000 diamond drill holes have been drilled from combined surface and underground programs. Needless to say, a great many significant intersections, carrying a wide range of gold values, have resulted from the total of over 756 miles of drill cores which these programs have produced.However, the term ""significant"" takes on new meaning in light of the experience of diamond drilling in a number of ore-type situations at the Dome Mine. Drilling through individual ore veins, such as the Fuchsite Vein or the Quartz-Tourmaline Vein, often intersect the vein structure; however, assays from the veins frequently fail to yield any ore grades. Similarly, drill cores through stringer-type occurrences such as dacite or conglomerate, when assayed, fail to indicate the true size or grade of the orebody ultimately mined.IntroductionOver the years, those who explore for gold and those who have the slightly less fickle task of actually mining gold have shared a common dilemma. That dilemma lies in the failure to relate the results of diamond drill information to a positive ore situation, or ultimately to reconcile ""diamond drill indicated ore"" to actual ore reserve tonnages.Drawing on the knowledge of more than 72 years of mining history at the Dome operation in the famous Porcupine Camp, this paper will review a number of drift and stope situations in which the grades of the ore material extracted will be compared with the anticipated grade of that same drift or zone as calculated solely on the basis of diamond drill assays."

The theory and practice of sampling of particulate material have been the focus of a continued attention on the part of the mining industry worldwide for almost a century now, because of its critical importance at all phases of a mining project, from exploration (bulk sampling, assaying) to production (grade control) and marketing (quality control). A powerful, complete theory was put together by P. Oy (1968 to i982), but its applications to gold ores have met with limited success to date, due to the inadequacy of its sampling variance and minimum sample mass determination formulae to the challenging case of gold ores. This paper presents a research project completed at Inco Exploration and Technical Services Inc., using a geostatistical approach, to shed light on the results of P.Gy's theory, and adapt them to the case of particulate gold ores. After a reminder of Gy's formulae and a simplified demonstration of the generic form of Gy's and more traditional formulae, an empirical approach, based on sampling experiments from four gold deposits, shows how Gy's formulae must be corrected to adjust to the case of gold ores. The generality of the results formula is then substantiated with a geostatistical analysis of the problem. A parameterized formula results, and indications are given on how to fit its parameters to experimental data. Application guidelines and charts to fit any case and budget are presented, along with a detailed practical example.

"Equipment selection is a key decision in mine planning. Equipment size affects decisions from pit size to the total operation cost. Particularly when replacing haulage fleets for long-life surface mining operations, mining operations focus solely on haulage productivity. Road width and specifically ramp width are significantly affected by an increase in hauler size in terms of overall strip ratio through required highwall set-backs or sterilizing of lower ore access due to required overlying ramp fill structures. In addition, in light of ever increasing regulatory and reporting emissions requirements, bigger equipment may not translate into lower emissions per tonne moved. This study analyzes hauler-scale impacts on aspects not currently incorporated into conventional mine planning, including expansion of roads to accommodate larger equipment, road layer thickness variation depending on hauler size, and fuel consumption and emissions. Results indicate that such relationships have a large impact on cost. Therefore, an expanded consideration of the capacities of increasing equipment size in mine planning is highly recommended. ¦ KEYWORDS Equipment selection, Grade resistance (GR), Haul road, Haul truck, Mine planning, Payload, Rolling resistance (RR), Total resistance (TR) RÉSUMÉ La sélection du matériel est une décision importante dans l’aménagement des mines. La taille de l’équipement a une incidence sur la prise de décisions, depuis la taille de la fosse jusqu’aux coûts totaux des activités. L’exploitation minière se concentre uniquement sur la productivité des moyens de transport, particulièrement lorsqu’il s’agit de remplacer les parcs de camions de transport dans les exploitations à ciel ouvert à longue durée de vie. La largeur des routes, et spécifiquement la largeur des descenderies sont considérablement affectées par une augmentation de la taille des camions de transport en termes du coefficient global de recouvrement qui dépend de la taille requise des parois (si les descenderies sont agrandies, les parois devront être creusées de haut en bas afin d’agrandir la taille du fond de la fosse). Il faut aussi pouvoir procéder à l’excavation des gradins les plus profonds de la mine et ainsi préserver l’accès à cette zone, ce qui pourrait devenir difficile si la quantité de stériles utilisés pour la structure des descenderies augmente et s’ils occupent une trop grande partie du fond de la fosse. En outre, au vu des exigences de plus en plus strictes en matière de réglementation et de déclaration des émissions, un équipement plus volumineux ne sera pas nécessairement synonyme d’une réduction des émissions par tonne déplacée. Cette étude analyse l’incidence de la taille des camions de transport sur des aspects actuellement non intégrés dans l’aménagement classique des mines, notamment la création de routes permettant le passage d’un équipement plus volumineux, la variation de l’épaisseur de la couche d’asphalte des routes en fonction de la taille des camions de transport, ainsi que la consommation de carburant et les émissions. Les résultats indiquent que ces relations ont des répercussions importantes sur les coûts. The argillaceous formation known as the Opalinus Clay is host to the Mont Terri Underground Research Laboratory. The URL was developed to investigate the hydrogeological, geochemical and geotechnical properties of the formation. Underground excavations at the site are characterized by non-elastic and time-dependent deformations. Excavations trending perpendicular to the strike of the bedding presented relatively minor deformations, however, tunnels parallel to the strike of the bedding showed much larger non-elastic deformations. This paper presents an analysis of the measured response of a tunnel trending parallel to the strike of the bedding in Opalinus Clay. The measured convergence is compared to tunnel experience in weak rocks to assess the tunnel stability.

Ordered intermetallic PtSb had been synthesized by arc-melted and then sintering treatment. The electro-oxidation of formic acid on PtSb was investigated at room temperature by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The results are compared to those at a polycrystalline platinum electrode surface. It was found that PtSb intermetallic was catalytically more active than pure platinum according to the onset potential and current density. XRD and XPS technologies had been used to investigate the crystal structure and electron effect. We think formic acid decomposition on PtSb favors the reactive intermediate route and is not very much affected by the CO intermediate as compared to Pt.

"The Bidgood is a small gold mine about 5 miles east of the main Kirkland Lake camp. Since the beginning of production in 1934, gold having a value of $5,000,000 has been produced from the property. Practically all of this production has come from seven veins in a diorite stock that intrudes the Timiskaming sediments and lavas of the area. The veins consist of quartz, pyrite, and molybdenite with minor amounts of chalcopyrite, calcite, and tellurides, and occupy northeast striking and northwest dipping thrust fault fractures.
