The accumulation of solids in solvent extraction (SX) circuits can cause problems with the physical and economic performance of the operation. These solids are responsible for the formation of crud, a solid stabilized emulsion containing organic, aqueous, air, and fine solid particles. The build-up of crud in SX settlers can limit SX operation throughput, require plant downtime, lead to higher organic losses, or result in higher aqueous in organic entrainment (all of which can have a significant, negative economic impact). Current practices for crud management are typically reactive. Crud is physically removed after it has been allowed to build to excessive levels in the circuit and processed mechanically using centrifuges or filtration. A new proactive solution has been developed to prevent crud formation and build-up. Low ppm dosage of an additive, ACORGA® CR60, into the pregnant leach solution (PLS) has resulted in reduced crud formation in pilot and commercial scale for a variety of PLS streams. This paper will review results from operations in North America and Africa, covering heap leach, concentrate leach, and agitated leach feeds. INTRODUCTION Crud formation and build-up in solvent extraction (SX) circuits has been a long time topic discussed and claimed to be crucial to the whole hydrometallurgical process (Liu, et al, 2006). Crud formation is present in all SX systems be it copper, uranium, zinc, etc., and Ritcey (1980) defined crud as a stabilized emulsion containing organic, aqueous, and fine solid particles. The ore type and feed composition is a major determining factor of crud formation and typically contains Si, Al, Fe, P, and sulfates (Ritcey, 1980). It typically builds at the interface between the organic and aqueous, but can also be observed as floating crud on the surface of the settler, or bottom crud, which is common to find in circuits treating agitated leach feeds such as in Africa. As crud formation has been unavoidable, many of the current crud management techniques are reactive, allowing crud to form and build in SX circuits. Once it does, it is removed and treated via different mechanical techniques, typically through some type of filtration or three-phase centrifuge, to remove the solids and recover the organic phase trapped within the emulsion (Ritcey, 1980). Automated pumping systems have also been designed and are frequently used in North American operations. The time and capital required to react to crud formation can be an overwhelming aspect to SX operation.

"Modal data from Red Dog Main Pit ores were collected and analysed on a size-by-size basis. The Main Pit data were compared to data from composite samples of Red Dog Aqqaluk ores. The data revealed that a large fraction of the sphalerite in the Aqqaluk baritic ore was tied up in sphalerite/galena binaries. This provided an explanation for its poor leadlzinc selectivity compared to Main Pit ores. The Aqqaluk vein ore exhibited levels of sphalerite/galena binaries comparable to that of Main Pit ores resulting in comparable lead/zinc selectivity.An attempt was made to correlate the modal and metallurgical data for Main Pit stockpiles. It was found that there was moderate correlation between the percentage of sphalerite locked in binaries with galena in the <C5>C6 size fi-action and sphalerite deportment to the leadconcentrate.INTRODUCTIONTeck Cominco’s Red Dog Mine in northern Alaska is one of the richest zinc districts in the world. Red Dog Mine has been in operation for over ten years and produces nearly 1 million tonnes of zinc concentrate per mum. Red Dog Mine is an open pit operation and current mining is conducted in the area known as the Main Pit. The Main Pit contains proven reserves of about 41 900 000 tonnes of ore grading 19.2% Zn and 5.2% Pb (Cominco 2000). To the north of the Main Pit is the Aqqaluk deposit. It contains probable reserves of 56 100 000 tonnes of ore grading 16.6% Zn and 4.1 % Pb. After the Main Pit has been exhausted, the Aqqaluk deposit will be exploited.The Aqqaluk deposit consists of three main geologic ore types: baritic, siliceous and vein. The siliceous ore type is dominant, representing 64% of the mineralisation. Composite samples of these ore types were created from drill core and batch flotation tests were performed on them. The flotation tests indicated that there were significant metallurgical differences between Main Pit ore and the Aqqaluk siliceous and baritic ore. The siliceous and baritic ores were found to suffer from poor lead/zinc selectivity (Lin 1999, G&T 1999). It was suspected that there were problems with the original Aqqaluk composite samples, thus a new set of composite samples were created and batch flotation tests were conducted again. In this set of tests, the new baritic ore still suffered from leadlzinc selectivity problems, but the new siliceous ore provided excellent metallurgical results. A summary of the flotation results is given in Table 1. Stockpile 132, which is typical of Main Pit ore, is given for comparison purposes. The mineral suite at Red Dog is relatively simple. The ore consists of galena, sphalerite and pyrite in a silicate matrix. The low zinc recoveries of the baritic ore were largely due to sphalerite losses to the lead concentrate."

At both the international and country level, the issue of how the mining sector and indigenous populations should engage on issues of mutual interest or concern has emerged as one of central importance and controversy; involving the mining industry, Aboriginal communities, governments, the courts, and other stakeholders. At its heart, stakeholder engagement is an ethical issue, although it manifests itself in international instruments, domestic laws, industry guidance and agreements. At the international level, the concept of ?free, prior and informed consent? (FPIC), while not subject to widespread agreement on the finer details of evolving definitions, seems to be emerging as an increasingly recognized engagement norm. Within Canada, through a series of decisions, the Supreme Court of Canada (SCC) has articulated a fiduciary obligation of the Crown to consult with and accommodate impacted Aboriginal groups on resource management issues. Provincial governments have been variously attempting to adjust their resource management regimes to stay in alignment with SCC and lower court decisions. Mining sector organizations, working with First Nations partners, have developed agreements to work together for mutual benefit. At the individual mine and community level, there have been instances of constructive engagement, as well situations of physical resistance and legal challenges. The purpose of this paper is to examine the potential impact of new rules under the Ontario Mining Act introduced in 2012 and taking full effect in 2013, which amongst other procedural specifications, addresses the issue of mining industry-Aboriginal consultation in exploration and development activities. Leading up to the passage of the regulations, representatives from some junior mineral exploration companies have been highly critical of the new rules. Similarly, there have been a range of responses to the new rules from some in the First Nations community. The paper will review the regulation in terms of its apparent alignment with SCC decisions and the international norm, compare the regulations with existing mining sector organization guidance documents, and it will draw on the stated perspectives and commentaries of First Nations communities, mining firms, governments, nongovernmental organizations, and others. Building on the foregoing, the paper will provide a preliminary analysis of the perspectives and potential impacts of the new regulation on various stakeholders, and on that basis, possible avenues for further consideration will be suggested.

Orano Mining maintains a significant level of Innovation and Development Research for its sites in Canada, Niger, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and France. This effort is formalized within the six major thematic programs below, which include more than one hundred affiliated R&D projects:  Geological understanding, tools and methods for exploration  ISR technology (geology, modeling, mining development tools)  Mining technology (SABRE)  Ore treatment and processing (in particular via our Centre for Innovation for extractive metallurgy, CIME)  Environment (radiochemistry, modeling, tools and methods for remediation)  Digital Mine (sensors, transmission, database, and data modeling) This paper describes the main actions of these six programs, their stakes, and their progress. There is no single path leading to innovation but fostering an innovative context and a structured project approach are essential ingredients to successful development and industrial deployment. As a result, Orano Mining has, over the years, developed a disciplined methodology for R&D portfolio and project management. This methodology, presented here, targets a reduction in time to implementation while valuing both the expertise and the work in project mode.

"At the Falconbridge Limited, Canadian Nickel Division, Sudbury Operations, we investigated the ""NO NOISE"" ear muffs model NN3-F which is a Swedish product with foam-filled sealing rings (the Hellberg Standard Volume Hearing Protector). It is used extensively at Falconbridge mines in Sudbury.The research which was carried out in the four Falconbridge mines was conducted under three different headings: manufacturer&apos;s attenuation data (psychophysical method), clamping force and head size (bizygomatic diameter), and attenuation tests (physical methods) under working conditions.Manufacturers of hearing protectors claim their products offer noise reductions of 23 decibels (NRR) or more, but they fail to point out that this reduction is obtainable only under ideal conditions. The reality of attenuation under working conditions, as several studies have found, is quite different.Methods for using short measurements to determine the noise exposure index, and for controlling muff-wearing habits, were developed at the Elliot Lake Laboratory. Measurements taken at Falconbridge on ""NO NOISE"" ear muffs revealed that they have a practical attenuation of some IO to 13 decibels. It is important to note here that measurements also revealed that clamping force (thus attenuation) was in an inverse relationship with ear muff comfort. Measuring attenuation using noise dosimeters was a difficult job. Not a single surveyor would accept these measurements (physical method) for absolute accuracy. Apart from that, it was impossible to measure, in one shift, more than two work stations. Because of this, we sought a solution: measuring head size and clamping force in relation to actual attenuations.A detailed analysis of the relationship between attenuation and head size/clamping force was done at four mines. Standard deviation ellipses (standard error ellipses) for head size versus clamping force are in close agreement with measurements that were carried out. In order to measure clamping force an apparatus was constructed and a method for measuring suspension system durability is described in Appendices Band C of this report. At the same time we sought to reduce deterioration of ear muffs in mines as well as to put in place a system whereby attenuation can be controlled and improved. The clamping force apparatus can be operated automatically. The proposed control system is quick, simple and efficient . This system is equally applicable in small and large mining operations, and it can be totally automated and the data computerized for audit of the results. This control system is a new step in controlling ear muff attenuation in working environments.From these measurements of NN3-F ""NO NOISE"" muffs it can be concluded that ear muffs are not the total solution to protect the worker from noise.As the results were evaluated folio wing measurement, Falconbridge switched from the NN3-F ""NO NOISE"" muffs to approximately 90% Mark V ""NO NOISE"" muffs and 10% Mark V MSA muffs. These new muffs showed much better head size versus clamping force relationship and can be expected to produce 14 dBA or better attenuation of noise. Within the scope the collaborative research centre 599 (Medical University of Hanover, University of Veterinary Medicine Hanover, University of Hanover) the behaviour of the degradation of magnesium materials as implants are investigated by using animal experiments (rabbits). Thus extruded cylindrical pins from the magnesium alloys MgCa0.8%, WE43 and LAE 442 were implanted intramedullary in the tibiadiaphyses. The implantation duration was 3 and 6 month. After the explantation 3 point bending tests were carried out to investigate the possible changes of the mechanical properties. Clearly changes in dependence of the implantation duration could be determined. The three magnesium alloys show a decrease of the mechanical resistance with an increasing implantation time. To evaluate the degradation process, wich is the reason for the changes, micrographs and element analyses (EDX) have been accomplished after the 3 point bending tests. The micrographs show for all used magnesium alloys corroded surfaces but no preferred corrosion on the grain boundarys. The element analyses show beside a layer which is rich in calcium and phosphorus an agglomeration of rare earth elements in this layer. With these results a using of magnesium alloys as a material for implants can be announced.

"In certain instances, rocks around underground excavations behave as a plastic mass. This paper offers several solutions to predicting the mode of plastic flow around cavities and designing mining pillars where plastic conditions exist.IntroductionWhen stresses around underground cavities exceed yield limits of the host rock, the material often behaves as a plastic mass. The best example of this phenomenon is the behaviour of salt rocks in deep salt and potash deposits (more than 500 m deep).However, many other soft rocks exhibit similar properties. For example, Jeremic(1) described certain types of coal yielding plastically under high pressure. Alder suggested that granulated rock behaves plastically.The object of this paper is to propose a de sign procedure for mining pillars exhibiting plastic flow due to the combination of rock properties and in-situ stresses.Prandtl(3) mathematically defined a concept of a generalized, perfectly plastic substance, not possessing the property of strain hardening (Fig. I). Location and History God&apos;s lake is in the northeastern part of Manitoba, about 400 miles northeast of Winnipeg, or about 250 miles due north of Red lake, Ontario. The lake is quite large, having an overall length of 54 miles and a maximum width of 18 miles. There are numerous islands in the lake, the largest of these, known as Elk island, being about 15 miles long and 3 miles wide in the widest part. The accompanying map (Figure 1) shows the location of God&apos;s lake and of the mine. The God&apos;s Lake area has long been regarded as promising country for the prospector, but, due to its inaccessibility, practically no prospecting was done prior to 1927. In the years 1927-1931, inclusive, a few prospectors visited the area, but no discoveries were made. In 1932, Bob Jowsey and Archie McDonald entered the area from Island lake. They first prospected in the vicinity of Knife lake, which is immediately south of the main part of God&apos;s lake, and then moved on to the latter lake, heading for the north shore of Elk island. The first afternoon on God&apos;s Lake, when looking for a place to camp on the north shore of what is now known as Jowsey island, Jowsey discovered a quartz porphyry dyke which was cut by a number of gold-bearing bluish quartz stringers. On the strength of this discovery, he and McDonald began at once to stake the Reno group of claims. Rumours of the discovery brought in other prospectors, and other groups of claims were staked to the east, along the north shore of Elk island. A second discovery was soon made by Dan McCrea on his Gold Standard claims, three and a half miles to the east of the original discovery. Staking still continued to the east, along the north shore of Elk island, and Bob Brown and Harvey McKenzie staked the Akers group on a discovery approximately two miles east of McCrea&apos;s discovery. Through the efforts of Jowsey, the Reno, Rand, Elk, and Cona groups, belonging to the original syndicate for which Jowsey and McDonald staked, were combined with the Gold Standard, Greenstone, and Akers groups, and the Company known as God&apos;s Lake Gold Mines, Limited, was formed. Several additional groups of claims were later taken over by the Company and a considerable area of adjoining ground was staked to round-out the property.

Long-chain primary amines are utilized as collectors in potash ore flotation. Krafft temperature of long-chain amines in brine is about 100 °C, and this makes such amines practically insoluble in brine at room temperature. When dodecylamine, melted at 70 °C and dispersed in hydrochloric acid (or acetic acid) aqueous solution, is added to a KCl-NaCl saturated brine at room temperature, the amine precipitates. The experimental results demonstrate that the precipitating amine hydrochloride particles are selectively abstracted by KCl particles, but not by NaCl particles.

Recently, light magnesium alloy with superior heat radiating ability has been attracting attention in various fields. However cold plastic working of the alloy is very difficult and hot working necessary. Furthermore, the magnesium of products with complicated shapes is difficult, the processing cost is high, and the applicability of the alloy is limited. In this study, a technique for obtaining fine wires and tubes by cold drawing is examined to obtain wires and tubes with high strength, quality and surface morphology, while decreasing production cost. In addition, the shearing strain of magnesium alloy wires and tubes drawn under various drawing conditions was calculated by FEM analysis. It was clarified that cold drawing of magnesium alloy is possible. It was also demonstrated that greater reduction of the cross-sectional area could be realized during cold wire and tube drawing by optimizing the drawing conditions.

"The concept of geometallurgy has been extensively mentioned and used in the mining industry in the past years. However, each mining firm has a different understanding of what geometallurgy means, and its actual value varies significantly from site to site. Even in the case of properly constructed geometallurgical models, it is fairly common to observe a sub-utilization of the model in the actual operation, because of its low production forecasting capability on the short term. This disconnect between the geometallurgical model and operations is typically caused by a lack of tuning between the original model and the actual plant operation. Also, the absence of procedures and other standards for reconciliation, affects the confidence and the predictive quality of the model. The geometallurgical model should consist of three different levels: (I) adequate capture of information, (II) data analysis and modelling, and (III) development of the block model. Once the geometallurgical in-situ model is finalized, a process model should be developed of the plant at industrial scale, in order to scale up the in-situ geometallurgical parameters from their base or standard condition, to the actual operating reality of the plant. Finally, the stage of reconciliation will close this process, assuring that any deviation between the geometallurgical model and the actual plant operation is not due to lack of tuning, but due to operational issues such as unattended maintenance requirements or poor process control in the operation. The methodology as described in this paper has been applied at several large mining sites in Chile. The paper presents the characteristics of the proposed methodology, and quantitatively describes its benefits with examples from actual operations.INTRODUCTIONIt probably is fair to say that geometallurgy became widely used in greenfield projects in the Andes region during the mining boom of the 90’s, when massive orebodies were studied and developed, and upfront metallurgical characterisation proved its use for accurate economic evaluation including estimates of plant throughput, energy consumption, final product quality and overall recovery. A few examples of such greenfield studies for concentrator plants in the 90’s are Minera Los Pelambres (Antofagasta Minerals, Chile), Minera Escondida, Laguna Seca (BHP Billiton, Chile), and Rio Blanco (then Montterrico Metals, Peru). Large size hydrometallurgical operations such as Cerro Colorado, Quebrada Blanca and Lomas Bayas (all in Chile), also recognised early on the importance and value of relating ore mineralogy, geological characterisation and metallurgical behaviour."

Compliance with Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) exposure regulation is currently performed using timeweighted average (TWA) sampling on underground mine workers. These samples are collected in the span of an entire shift and the resulting concentrations are compared to a legislated exposure limit. While this is very useful to determine the exposure level of an individual to DPM, it fails to clearly identify causes of exposure and highlight opportunities that could help reduce the exposure of workers in the course of the work shift. Real-time DPM monitoring measures the worker?s exposure as a function of time and helps identify circumstances where corrective actions can be taken or design changes can be made by the individual or the employer to reduce the overall exposure of the worker and peers. This work focused on obtaining DPM concentrations using a real-time polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) monitor. The aim was to demonstrate that this instrument, while not a direct DPM analyzer, was able to provide a concentration profile that could easily be linearly correlated to standard TWA elemental carbon measurements. In addition, several instances of improvements that could be implemented to reduce the exposure of underground employees were demonstrated.

The Águas Claras and Pico mines are two world-class, iron-ore mines hosted within Lower- Proterozoic banded iron-formations (locally known as itabirites) of the Minas Supergroup located in the Quadrilátero Ferrífero District, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The Águas Claras orebody consists of a 2,500 m long roughly tabular-shaped lens hosted within the dolomitic itabirite of the Cauê Formation. Dolomitic itabirite is the protore of the soft high-grade iron ore, which is the main ore type of the Águas Claras orebody, and represents more than 85% of the 284 Mt mined since 1973. Hematite is the main constituent of the iron ores. It occurs as martite, granular hematite and, locally, as specularite. Magnetite appears subordinately as relicts within martite and hematite crystals. Gangue minerals are very rare. These consist of dolomite, chlorite, talc and apatite and are especially common close to the contact with the protore. This virtual absence of gangue minerals is reflected in the chemistry of ores which are characterized by very high Fe contents (an average of 68.2% Fe). The Pico orebody is a continuous ~3,000 m long body of lenticular shape hosted within quartz itabirite, which is the protore of the soft high- and low-grade ores at the Pico mine. The soft high-grade ores, together with the low-grade ores, called iron-rich itabirite, are the main types of ores at the Pico mine, respectively representing approximately 51 % and 29 % of the reserves within the pit. The iron oxide mineralogy is the same as that of the Águas Claras mine, but in different proportions. Gangue minerals are very rare in the high-grade ores, but are slightly more common in the iron-rich itabirite. Quartz is the dominant gangue mineral, and is found with minor quantities of chlorite. The chemistry of the high-grade ores is characterized by high Fe contents (an average of 67.0 %) and low P, Al2O3, and SiO2 which are concentrated in the fines. Iron rich itabirites average 58.6% Fe and 13.5% SiO2.

"The Air-Metabisulfite (AMBS) process has been developed to treat complex copper, molybdenum and precious metals (gold, silver) bearing ores using brackish and sea water. This process was able to produce significantly better copper concentrate grades and higher recovery than possible using conventional lime and/or cyanide based processes for certain complex ores with high sulphide gangue minerals. The AMBS technology in now used commercially following a rigorous evaluation process emanating from laboratory curiosity to plant applications. In addition, many projects have embraced this technology at a feasibility level involving various complex ore bodies.This paper presents a summary of the findings from testing the AMBS technology on various ores types. Experiences gained from this successful development from bench to piloting and then to plant applications are also presented in this paper.INTRODUCTIONProcessing of sulphide copper, molybdenum and precious metal ores typically involves flotation of copper bearing minerals while depressing non-sulphide and other non-copper sulphide minerals such as pyrite, pyrrhotite and sometimes arsenopyrite. Though in many precious metal ores, the values are in these sulphide minerals as well. The conventional method employed in the industry to produce a saleable copper concentrate requires depression of these non-copper sulphide minerals using an alkaline pH above 9.5, though 10.5 to 11.5 is more common. Alkalinity is controlled by the addition of a pH modifier. Lime is normally employed as a pH modifier due to its relatively low cost; however, the costs associated with adding lime can be significant and the effectiveness of lime as a depressant could be drastically reduced when the process water supplied to the flotation circuit contains high level of dissolved salts. In some cases, a small amount of cyanide is used along with lime to depress non-copper sulphide minerals especially when its proportion to copper sulphide minerals in the ore is higher than three."

"In order to improve the nickel concentrate thickener operation at Raglan Mine, two pulp deaeration cyclones were installed. These units obtained from Outotec Pty Ltd, also called the FrothBuster®, have been in continuous operation since mid-October 2006. The primary objective of the de-aeration cyclones is to lower the solids content in the thickener overflow by de-aerating the concentrate pulp before it enters the concentrate thickener. This dearated slurry should help decrease the nickel particle losses that report to the thickener overflow because of the flotation effect within the thickener.Optimizing the de-aeration cyclones has been a slow and ongoing process, however, initial testing is encouraging. The latest test results indicate a 50 % reduction (0.070 to 0.035 % solids) in nickel losses to the concentrate thickener overflow resulting in an additional $350,000 in annual revenues.This paper will present an overview of installing the de-aeration cyclones within a limited space, as well as the preliminary commissioning and testing challenges. This paper will also discuss the most recent concentrate thickener operating results since the de-aeration units were installed.INTRODUCTIONThe Xstrata Nickel Raglan Concentrator, located at the northern limit of Quebec’s Nunavik Region has been in production since 1997. In early 2002, the concentrator implemented the Zero Process Water Discharge (ZPWD) project to recycle the process water to decrease fresh water consumption and reduce discharges to the environment. Due to this initiative, the chemistry of the process water changed significantly resulting in flotation concentrate streams, which were very frothy and difficult to manage. This phenomenon has resulted in operational challenges in many areas of the concentrator including slurry pumping, flow measurement and concentrate thickening.In October 2005, the Raglan Mine underwent a conversion from an AG mill to a SAG mill operation in order to increase throughput and to optimize key process areas. As part of this project, the first two North American pulp de-aeration (FrothBuster®) units from Outotec were installed to improve the operation of the concentrate thickener. The primary objective of the deaeration technology was to lower the solids content in the thickener overflow by de-aerating the concentrate thickener feed pulp. This in turn was to reduce the froth, which accumulates on the thickener surface, and more importantly reduce valuable nickel losses to the thickener overflow because of the flotation effect within the thickener."

The presence of crud represents a permanent challenge for solvent extraction in the hydro-metal industry. The crud is a stable emulsion which slowly spreads along the phase boundary between the aqueous and organic phase. The crud can significantly impair the efficiency of hydro-metal extraction because the phase boundary between the aqueous and organic phases assumes substantial proportions, and the settlers cannot react flexibly. In a chain reaction, all settlers connected in series become infected with crud. The transfer of organic phase to the electrowining (EW) cell can cause &apos;cathode burn&apos;. Continuous treatment of the crud is extremely effective and reliable with a 3-phase separating solid bowl centrifuge. All three phases are separated distinctly from one another. All associated process steps exhibit a steady uniform efficiency. First and foremost, they ensure a reliable, continuous extraction process and, second, they recover valuable re-usable organics from the crud.

"The Glencore Raglan mine Concentrator, located in Quebec’s Nunavik region, has been in operation since 1997. The nickel metallurgical plant was originally designed to process 100 tonnes per hour of ore to produce 130 000 tonnes of nickel concentrate per year at 16% Ni. The increased grinding capacity and the discovery of rich ore bodies have increased the annual production to more than 190 000 tonnes of concentrate at 19% Ni. In 2014, the Metallurgical group, with support from BBA, implemented an expert control system on the flotation circuit. This project was initiated to cope with the high variability of the concentrator’s feed. Increasing the plant recovery and final concentrate grade were also important project objectives. The implementation of the expert system ensures better control of concentrate inventory while maintaining maximum plant throughput. This paper describes the successful implementation of the new control system, the control technology selection and the flotation circuit optimization. It will also discuss the performances obtained with this new approach and the improved process stability.IntroductionThe Raglan Mine is located in Northern Quebec along the 62th parallel. A casual reading of the geological literature extant to-day would give one the impression that carbon is an element which by some chance or another always existed at or near the surface of the earth, and was never of a magmatic origin. The carbonaceous matter in shales is said to be of vegetal derivation; petroleum is stated to have been derived from vegetable matter or from marine animal bodies; if carbon or bituminous matter is found in igneous rocks or associated with metallic ores, the statement is made that deeply buried carbonaceous sedimentaries were undoubtedly the source from which such carbon or bituminous matter was derived. This, I do not consider a reasonable or common sense view of the matter. Carbon is one of the elements of which the earth is composed. In the table giving the periodicity of the elements it comes sixth in the order of increasing atomic weights. It is an element formed like all the rest were formed, and must be as common to the interior of the earth as the rest of the eighty-odd elements so far discovered. The spectroscopic analysis of light from the sun, and the stars, shows the presence of carbon in the sun and in the colder stars. Thus with carbon, an element, found throughout the universe as well as on the earth, it is entirely reasonable to consider it as present in the interior of the earth with the other elements. Such being the case, the magmatic origin for the various forms of carbon in rocks and ores is a rational and logical conclusion. If but a small fraction of thought and effort was made along these lines, which is made in fostering the idea of the organic origin of the carbon found in the earth&apos;s crust, untold advances in this phase of geological science would result.

The assessment and control of environmental noise from mines has become increasingly important in recent years, due to urbanization and population growth, increased regulation of environmental factors, and overall awareness and sensitivities to noise exposure.&nbsp;Minimizing adverse effects on communities and achieving compliance with local ordinances is now commonplace, and consideration of noise during the design and/or operation of a mine cannot be ignored. Ventilation equipment can represent the loudest and most bothersome equpiment at mines, however there are complexities when attempting to control the assocaited noise, due to the acoustical nature of&nbsp;mine vent fans. In fact, the utilization of traditional and/or&nbsp;industry standard methods can intensify&nbsp;the noise impact, or simply not work as intended. This paper provides recommendations on specific noise control methods that are suitable for mine ventilation equipment, based on recent assessment work and field experience.

"The general geology of the Great Bear Lake area has been described by; D. F. Kidd in the Summary Report of the Geological Survey for 1932. A brief description of the Eldorado mine was prepared by C. S. Lord for Memoir 230; Mineral Industry of the Northwest Territories; published by the Geological Survey in 1941. Recently; a detailed geological examination of the mine area has been initiated by the Geological Survey and; under A. W. Jolliffe's leadershif; J. D. Bateman; H. B. Thurber; and M. Feniak have prepared a number of maps and reports; as yet unpublished. Detailed mapping of the mine has been carried out since August; 1943; by A. W. Esty.Kidd has shown that, in the largely granitic country along the east side of Great Bear lake, the Echo Bay district is one of several underlain by older rocks . These he has divided into the Echo Bay and Cameron Bay groups. The former are strongly altered sediments, .porphyries, and lavas; the latter and younger group is predominantly sedimentary and far less altered. Associated with the granite, which everywhere intrudes the sediments and volcanics, are earlier differentiates. Later than all these rocks are various basic intrusives, collectively termed diabase. All the rocks are of Precambrian age."
