Studies of a protium treatment for grain refinement of a + ß type titanium alloy are reviewed and recent experimental results are introduced. Protium treatment consists of the following three processes: (1) protium absorption, (2) martensitic transformation and hot working, and (3) final treatment for protium desorption and recrystallization. A combination of these processes results in the ultra-fine grains of 0.3 to 0.5 µm in diameter with high angle boundaries. The ultra-fine-grained material exhibits superplastic elongation of over 9000%. Superplastic forming was successfully used to fabricate a denture base. These materials may be widely applicable as biomaterials in various medical industries.

"Gas adsorption in coal is an exothermic and physical process. Temperature might change during the dynamical process. In order to get the temperature variation of gas adsorption process, the experiment system which can test the temperature variation and analyze the thermal effect was established. Gas adsorption experiments under different conditions were done by using the test system. The results show that temperature increases during the adsorption process. It is an exothermic reaction process. Also, the temperature variation and the variation gradient increase with the increasing of equilibrium pressure. The temperature variation value is smaller if the experiment temperature is higher. The paper will provide basic experimental data for explaining gas adsorption mechanism better.INTRODUCTIONChina is the largest coal producer in the world while it also has the most serious coal mine disasters. According to the statistics, there are nearly a thousand coal mines in China including more than 110 the key state-owned mines risking to happen coal and gas outburst. Hundreds of coal and gas outburst occur each year which often causes serious casualties and economic losses (State Administration of Work Safety, 2007). With the continuing exploitation of the coal resources, the depth of the Chinese coal mines increases about 100 meters every year which causes the situation of gas accident becoming more and more serious (Xie et al., 2006).At present, the real mechanism of gas adsorption, desorption and the diffusion process in coal and the influence factor of it are not so clear. And because of the limit of prediction method and the technological level caused gas accident prevention theory and technology not so valid."

QCM?s pellet plant, located in Port-Cartier, Quebec, produces up to 8.6 million tons of iron ore pellets annually. Four different types are produced: three for blast furnace operations and one for direct reduction furnaces. The paper presents the scientific approach that led to the installation of new process equipment to improve the reducibility of direct reduction pellets (DR pellet). The findings, the equipment selection and some post start-up modifications are presented. This low silica DR pellet is used in Midrex and HyL shaft furnaces. A good DR pellet has to meet strict chemical, physical and metallurgical specifications. An important metallurgical property is its ability to release oxygen when exposed to reducing gases. Considering that the market for DR pellets is expanding and being aware that reducibility is critical for our clients, a program to improve the latter was undertaken. Test work showed that one factor which has a negative effect on reducibility is the proportion of particles larger than 75 microns. Knowing that the best way to reduce the amount of coarse particles was to close our open grinding circuits, we began evaluating the most suitable classification equipment applicable to our process operations. We settled on hydro-classifiers based on their very sharp cut and their low operating costs. In light of the hydro-classifiers performance it was also decided to replace the hydro-cyclones of an already closed circuit.

"Line Creek Resources Ltd. produces three million clean tonnes per year of metallurgical and thermal coals for the international market. The mining operation, which is located in the mountains of southeastern British Columbia, produces coal from four pits by conventional truck and shovel methods.The South Pit, which has been in operation since J982, has a benched highwall 490 m in height. Shallow dipping coal seams at the base of the syncline formation will be exposed in the highwall over the next four years of pit life. The first of these seams, which will measure 500 m in final highwall length, was exposed in J994. An auger, powered by a 1250 hp engine capable of cutting 2.2 m diameter holes, was brought on site in J994 and has proven to be a successful means of recovering coal from the J3 m thick seam.This paper covers the background to the selection of an auger mining method to recover highwall reserves together with the geotechnical and methane considerations for this approach.IntroductionLine Creek Resources Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Manalta Coal Ltd., owns and operates the Line Creek mine. The operation which consists of four active pits, a processing plant, and rail loadout is located in the southeastern coal fields of British Columbia. Figure 1 shows the general area.The coal bearing sequence at the mine is preserved on the east and west limbs of a major syncline. Up to twelve mineable coal seams, ranging in thickness from 2 m to 15 m are contained in the formation. Within the pits the seams are stratigraphically consistent and structurally undisturbed, except for small-scale thrust faults that create multiple repeats of the seams."

"The national reactive tailings (RATS) program is a co-operative industry-government effort to develop practical techniques for closure of reactive tailings areas. This paper summarizes the RATS program objectives and areas of research, and details the Noranda/CANMET project on the Waite Amulet tailings.Geophysical and biohydrogeochemical investigations were carried out at an inactive copper-zinc mine tailings site, Waite Amulet, in Noranda, Quebec. Geophysical investigations consisted of seismic, electromagnetic conductivity and electrical resistivity surveys to determine the thickness of the layers above bedrock and to map conductivity variations within the tailings and the immediate outlying area. Biohydrogeochemical investigations consisted of installing multilevel piezometer nests to determine groundwater flow patterns and porewater chemistry, obtaining solid core samples and characterizing for physical, chemical and mineralogical parameters, and iron oxidizing and sulphate reducing bacterial counts.The geophysical survey indicated a bedrock ridge extending under the tailings from the northeastern outcrop which may act as a porewater boundary layer. The survey also indicated a 2 to 20 m clay layer underlying the main tailings dam. Preliminary results of the saturated zone porewater chemistry have indicated three major zones of high electrical conductivity varying between 1,000 to 12,000 µs and pH between 3.4 to 8. Lower pH and high metal and sulphate concentrations were obtained in a shallow zone near the water table. With depth, the concentration of metal and sulphate ions decreased and pH increased below the water table. The underlying clay layer is relatively impervious -and most of the seepage from the tailings is probably exiting from the sides of the impoundment dam."

"Development of a process for the treatment of a nickel copper matte rich in the minerals heazlewoodite, chalcocite and bornite has demonstrated significant base metal recoveries and metal separation efficiencies. The determination of chemical and mineralogical changes occurring in the individual leaching stages in laboratory experiments has enabled a better understanding of the complex leaching chemistry. The chemistry and mineralogy of the piloting and laboratory processes are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe nickel-copper sulfide ores of the South African Bushveld Complex are among the most important Platinum Group Metal (PGM) bearing ores, and contain the world’s largest reserves of platinum. The treatment used in the recovery of PGMs from these ores includes three types of processes, namely ore concentration using physical techniques such as flotation and gravity separation, concentration by pyrometallurgical means, hydrometallurgical extraction of the base metals followed by the PGMs. Following milling of the ore, flotation involves the separation of high value minerals from gangue by taking advantage of the differences in their hydrophobicity. These differences are generally maximized through the use of a surfactant or wetting agent. Concentrates are then thermally treated and melted which brings about physical and chemical changes that enable the recovery of base metals and PGMs. The main aim of the smelting and converting process is to separate and eliminate the valuable metals from the bulk of the unwanted gangue and essentially all of the iron and to concentrate the metal VALUES (into a high grade converter matte. The matte can be further enriched by magnetic separation, producing a PGM-rich magnetic fraction and a base metal-rich non-magnetic fraction. The magnetic fraction is treated by hydrometallurgical processes to produce a PGM concentrate which is further refined to separate and purify the individual metals. The non-magnetic fraction is treated to produce marketable metal VALUES (such as nickel, copper, cobalt and to a lesser extent PGMs. The principal objective of any hydrometallurgical extractive process is to leach the desired elements selectively into an aqueous phase so as to separate them from the bulk of the material. "SART technology is a useful tool for improving the economics of gold recovery from certain types of complex gold ores. SART liberates cyanide consumed by base metals such as copper, zinc and nickel, and enables the newly freed cyanide to be recycled to precious metals leaching while producing high-grade base metal sulphide concentrates for sale. The benefits of SART include the reduction in cyanide consumption, avoidance of cyanide destruction costs, minimization of risks of environmental non-compliance due to residues of cyanide destruction reporting to mine effluents, and generation of extra revenue from the sale of base metal concentrates. Concerns with SART typically include uncertainties around capital and operating costs and proper integration of SART into the overall metallurgical flowsheet. This paper presents two case studies addressing these concerns. The first involves actual costs of the full scale SART integrated into a gold heap leach operation and treating up to 500 m3/hr of leach solution at a mine in Mexico. The second involves field pilot testing and a preliminary cost estimate for integrating SART into a silver mine in Peru using Merrill Crowe.INTRODUCTION One of the current trends in the gold industry globally is the increasing importance of complex polymetallic gold deposits as discoveries of large Carlin type gold deposits become increasingly rare (Sceresini, 2005). The presence of cyanide soluble copper and zinc in complex gold deposits necessitates changes in traditional gold extraction metallurgical flowsheets. One of the tools available to the industry to help deal with interferences of cyanide-soluble base metals in gold extraction is the SART (sulphidization-acidification-recycling-thickening) process. SART breaks the weak acid dissociable (WAD) base metal-cyanide complexes, precipitates the metals as high-grade sulphide concentrates and makes the freed cyanide available for recycle. Although SART is a commercially available technology, it is still relatively new to the industry. Fewer than ten (10) full scale plants have been constructed in the past couple of decades. Some of these SART plants are small, most are located at remote sites, and the majority have not operated on a continuous basis. This has resulted in a general lack of information in the industry about the true costs, operability and metallurgical performance of SART. BQE Water has been involved in the design, construction, commissioning and operation of large scale SART plants in Mexico, Turkey and Chile and has conducted field testing programs as part of the technical assessment of SART integration into various metallurgical circuits. Having built and operated numerous plants utilizing selective sulphide precipitation of heavy metals, BQE Water has gained unique insight into the design and control of the sulphidization stage of SART to minimize costs and ensure high efficiency in cyanide recovery."

The introduction of the National Instrument (?NI?) 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects has led to some very specific requirements to reporting a Mineral Resource estimate for mineral projects to the public. There are elements of the Mineral Resource estimate that are based on the qualified person (?QP?) completing the work to accepted industry practices and applying their relevant experience. There is no document that defines what is considered the accepted industry practices. There are guidelines provided by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (?CIM?) but, in general, the industry practices are dynamic and often different QPs will estimate the same mineral project in different ways. This sometime happens on exploration projects as they proceed from one study to the next. The focus of this paper is to provide a review of some of the current practices that are published in Technical Reports (Preliminary Assessment to Feasibility studies) with respect to classifying a Mineral Resource as Inferred, Indicated and Measured and the grade interpolation and modeling methods, data support (i.e. geological drill hole spacing) and validation methods employed.

"A comprehensive froth model has been derived from first principles. It is based on predicting the kinetics of film thinning in the presence of particles of varying sizes and surface hydrophobicity. According to the Reynolds lubrication theory, the thinning of a horizontal film is driven by the excess film pressure (p), which is determined by the capillary pressure (pc) and the disjoining pressure (II). In the presence of particles, macroscopic capillary pressure (pc) is affected by the local capillary pressure (pc,local) in the vicinity of a particle and the number of particles in the film (N1,film), which in turn vary with the hydrophobicity and size of the particles. The Reynolds equation corrected for pc,local and N1,film is then used to predict the time (or froth height) at which a film is thinned to a critical rupture thickness (hcr), which in turn can be predicted using the Vrij’s capillary wave model (1966) after a modification to incorporate the contributions from hydrophobic disjoining pressure (IIhp). The model can predict bubble coarsening represented by the bubble size ratio between the top (d2,t) and bottom (d2,b) of a froth as functions of particle size and hydrophobicity, ? -potentials, frother dosages, froth height, gas flow rate, salt concentration, etc. The model predictions have been verified in experiments.INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation is regarded the best available technology today for upgrading minerals and coal fines. In the pulp phase of a flotation cell, air bubbles collect hydrophobic particles dispersed in it and rise to enter the froth phase on the top. Once in a froth phase, the bubbles coalesce with each other and become larger, resulting in a decreased bubble surface area. Under conditions of limited surface area, less hydrophobic particles drop off the bubble surface and return to the pulp phase. Thus, bubble coarsening provides a useful mechanism of increasing product grades. On the other hand, uncontrolled coarsening results in a decrease in bubble carrying capacity and hence throughput."

During the last eight years, the Ventanas electrolytic refinery has been improving its results by applying a series of new operational practices, such as the reduction of electrode spacing from 115 mm to 105 mm., raising the current density to 305 A/m2, modification in the operators shifts to about 70% of the workers, reducing the pulling cycles by two hours, and the erection of a new anode preparation machine. These improvements allowed an increase in the refinery capacity from 323,000 to 382,000 metric tons of electrolytic copper per year. In the same period it has obtained certification under the ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001:2004 standards. All of these developments have been achieved using conventional technology with copper starting sheets. The continuous improvement that is covered in this paper has allowed Ventanas to optimize its production, costs, and operational results. For the next years, it is planned to follow the same tendency, bringing the productivity of the plant to higher levels.

At then end of this year will be 10 years of producing concentrate for Antamina. This is a summary of what occurred over the last decade to increase production and tonnage above the design tonnage of 70,000 tonnes per day, up to an average of 100,018 tonnes per day in 2010, an increase in production of 42.9%. Equipment currently in use is the originally installed equipment, signifying a meaningful increase in capacity without capital. In this paper, the different phases of improvements and the realization of their impacts in chronological order will be outlined. Figure 1 below shows the average daily tonnage processed each year (tonnage throughput each year/calendar days), as well as the percentage increase over the tonnage of design.

In Canadian mines, ear muffs are now an essential part of safety equipment. Because of this, a research study was conducted to investigate their efficiency. The main characteristics of eleven commercially available ear muffs were investigated in the laboratory and analyzed by: (I) a psychophysical method; and (2) a physical method. These investigations showed the following effects: head size has a significant influence on the attenuation because of a different clamping force; the amount of hair trapped between the ear muff cushion and the head decreased ear muff attenuation; attenuation and comfort are not in a causal relationship; with the use of glasses and their adapters, attenuation decreases-the adapters are not effective sound barriers; there are no great differences in attenuation with neck movement; the efficiencies of various brands of ear muffs are not equal; ear muffs with a small cushion area start serving their purpose more quickly because the force per unit area is larger; a clamping force larger than 900 g wt, in most ear muffs, does not cause an increase in attenuation; attenuation characteristics (ANSI 224.22 - 1957) of ear muffs show some correlation with physical tests. Nine ear muffs out of the eleven were tested under uniform conditions in mines. Three ear muffs were found to be the best. All three ear muff s have bands passing behind the head. The ear muff with a support strap, which improves comfort and maintains a good fit during wear, showed the best attenuation. Causes of poor attenuation are numerous: bad mounting of ear muffs on helmets, improper fitting, interferency by hair and glasses, improper wearing by miners, unsatisfactory enforcement by supervisory personnel, incomplete training of miners, etc. Results of this research have indicated that none of the ear muff s tested in this study contain all of the characteristics desirable in an ideal unit. Because of unsatisfactory ear muff attenuation in working conditions (/5 dBA), it should be a mandatory requirement that workers wear both ear muff s and ear plugs if the noise level is higher than 105 dBA (various literature recommends t io dBA). The key to the solution lies in the following: the foreman must be capable of helping and controlling miners in their task of wearing ear muffs properly; the program must be introduced to miners; and constant contact must be maintained with manufacturers.

The scanning electron microscope (SEM) was primary developed for imaging applications. With the introduction of the Si(Li) energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), simultaneous imaging and x-ray microanalysis became possible. However, long working distance and high current were needed because the position and small solid angle of the EDS detector. The high spatial resolution is generally obtained at short working distance with a SEM. Unfortunately x-ray microanalysis is never performed in the best imaging conditions. The annular silicon drift detector system is inserted below the objective lens which gives a higher solid angle (up to 1.3 sr). In consequence, a lower working distance and probe current can be used. An improved spatial resolution becomes possible during x-ray microanalysis. With this x-ray detector installed on a cold-field emission scanning electron microscope, quantitative x-ray microanalysis with high spatial resolution at low beam energy and low current becomes possible with the possibility of using the various different type of imaging at the same time. Also, since the count rate can be as high as 1,500 kcps, which lowers significantly the detection limit of elements as well as the minimum feature sizes of different phases that can be distinguished.

The deep-hole surface blasting technique is a prime method of iron ore mining. Blasting fragmentation is one of the important economic indicators that measures the blast method to obtain the iron ore. To improve the efficiency of the blasting method and further reduce the cost of the subsequent processing of iron ore, this paper summarizes measured data gained from a certain amount of blasting test conducted in an iron ore mine in Guangdong province, China. According to the data analysis, there are differences on iron ore blasting fragmentation by different indicators of deep-hole blasting, such as decoupling coefficient of charge, contact state between charge and borehole wall, and change of detonation position in charge. These factors were compared in terms of relevance and impact. Research shows: under certain rock conditions, the decoupling coefficient of the charge has a best range related to blasting fragmentation. Since the detonation position in charge determines the direction of propagation of the explosion stress wave through ore and rock, bottom initiation and mid initiation will help to improve the iron ore blasting fragmentation in joints fractured rock and ore. The research conclusions have important application value for program design of iron ore surface blasting and to guide other types of rock surface blasting.

Electrospark Deposition (ESD) is a pulsed-arc micro-welding process characterized by using high current electrical pulses, of a short duration, to deposit an electrode material on a metallic substrate. The short duration of the electrical pulse allows for a low heat input over the substrate and an extremely rapid solidification of the deposited material. As a result, the ESD is capable of a wide variety of microstructures like micro-segregationfree solid solutions, nanostructured grains, metastable structures, and amorphous phases. The present work shows a microstructural analysis of rapidly solidified Al-Ni alloys coatings by the ESD process. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) were performed to present the microstructural evolution as a function of the welding parameters. The phases and non-equilibrium metastable structures present in the alloys, and their distribution, were found to be a sensitive function of the alloy composition; hence its formation is governed primarily by thermodynamic considerations.

Hydrogen generated through aluminum-assisted water split reaction is a novel, efficient and environmentally friendly method. It has been found previously that the passivation of aluminum can be prevented in neutral (pH=7) or near neutral pH conditions in water by grinding aluminum with a catalyst, such as A12O3, SiO2 or SiC. Recently, the best results have been obtained by using water-soluble inorganic salts (WIS), ground with aluminum. The massive, rapid corrosion reaction of the Al-WIS system which takes place in regular tap (or marine, or ground) water can be utilized to produce hydrogen by aluminum-assisted water split reaction, in-situ, on-demand. The reaction offers clean, low-cost, environmentally benign and entirely recyclable technology for on-board on-demand hydrogen generation. Besides pure gaseous hydrogen, only pure solid aluminum hydroxides AlOOH or Al(OH)3 are formed as the reaction products. The hydrogen yield and Al-WIS reaction efficiency are high. From 1 g of mechanically alloyed aluminum powder, up to 1.25 liters of hydrogen were generated, i.e. efficiency up to 92% was achieved. The amount of hydrogen and hydrogen generation rate depend on various reaction parameters. The effect of chemistry and concentration of additives, water temperature, powder particle size and milling conditions on the reaction kinetics will be presented and the possible process mechanism will be discussed.

Recently, titanium and its alloys have been the materials of choice for the liner and internal components of autoclaves used to extract Ni and Co from laterite ores. There have been many corrosion incidents ranging from localized attacks due to scale formation or welding, to damage caused by pockets of concentrated acid. Most of the literature focuses on methods to avoid the corrosion altogether. Little has been published to increase awareness of the chemistry at these conditions. For this paper, a literature review of the thermodynamics of titanium was undertaken to decipher the slew of information available. E-pH diagrams were constructed from select data and compared with the results of electrochemical experiments. Since nickel laterite leaching takes place in sulphuric acid, and in many cases chloride concentrations are very high, the Ti-H2O, Ti-Cl--H2O and Ti-SO4---H2O systems were considered.

"Methane emission and the desorption characteristics of vertical borehole coal samples of Greenhills multiple seams in the vicinity of Elkford, British Columbia were investigated. Three vertical boreholes at depths of 335 m, 380 m and 395 m were drilled along the west wall of an active open pit mine and 44 core samples from various coal seams were obtained for desorption studies.The results are presented in three tables and illustrated with six figures. The methane content was found to increase significantly at depths greater than 200 m. The adsorption equation by Kim and the properties of the coal have been used to predict the methane content and these were compared with the measured values by the direct method.IntroductionThe coalification of plant material in the sedimentary rock produces different ranks of co al and gases of various composition. The gas mixtures are retained in coal beds and rock strata under pressure. The gas content in a coal bed varies considerably depending on the rank of coal and the depth of overburden. The gas content is defined as the volume of gases adsorbed in a unit weight of coal materials. The net amount of gases remaining in a coal seam depends on the difference in the rate of generation of methane by geo-thermal heat and the rate of diffusion of the gases out of the coal bed through sedimentary cover. The major factor that causes the change in rank and the liberation of gases is the temperature, which is governed by the thermal conductivity of sedimentary cover and the heat flux through the underlying rocks. The rate of diffusion of the gases out of the coal is governed by the porosity of the overlying rocks and the degree of fracture. The measured values of gas content in major North American coal beds are from zero up to 24 cm3 per gram of coal(1,2). A gas content of 2.5 to 9 cm3/g is considered ""gassy"" and that of 9 cm3/g or higher is considered ""very gassy"" for underground mining(3). Normally, the gas mixtures released from bituminous coal in Canada contain 90 to 98% methane and the remainder is made up of CO2, N2, 02, H2, He and other hydrocarbons(4)."

"Electrodialysis (ED) is an electro-membrane technology based on electrochemical process using electrical energy for the production of chemicals. The process can be used for concentrating, extracting, separating products, modifying molecules, purifying solutions, pH adjustment and regenerating salts into their base and acid. This paper reviews the principle of ED, present some of the different options and discuss applications that are relevant to the hydrometallurgy and mining industries for the treatment of effluents focusing on recovery of chemicals (acid and metals) and recycling of water minimizing the environmental footprint.INTRODUCTIONElectrodialysis (ED) is usually defined as an electrochemical separation process in which electrically charged membranes and an electrical potential difference are used to separate ionic species from an aqueous solution and other uncharged components [1]. ED technology consists of an electro-membrane technology based on an electrochemical process using electrical energy for the production of chemicals. It is a method combining electrolysis and dialysis was proposed for the first time in 1890 by Maigrot and Sabates [2]. In the late 1930s Teorell, Meyer and Sievers discussed membrane phenomena, revealed membrane potential, electric conductivity, transport number [3]. Meyers and Strauss introduced a multi-compartment ED apparatus consisting of two electrodes and a stack of ion-exchange membranes between them [1]. They succeeded to double the concentration of a KCL solution [3- Tarleton]. In general, ED consumes less energy than electrolysis to perform salt splitting. In that regard, one can expect an energy reduction of about 30% [4–5]. ED offers a great versatility in the domain of separation processes. Indeed, it can be used for concentrating, extracting, separating products, purifying by desalination, pH adjustment and regenerating a salt to acid and base components. This paper reviews the principle of ED, presents various options available and discusses potential applications relevant to the mining and metallurgy industries with economics of some successful industrial applications."

Sengupta, published in the October 1976 issue of the CIM Bulletin.Sengupta says in the introduction that ""The mechanism through which this growth (economic development) has occurred is basic ally straight forward"". His statement is quite misleading and perhaps it is better to quote Gerald Meier:""Development economists must operate in an imperfect second-best world, away from the simplified premises of neoclassical economics. Their subject matter is therefore not yet a coherent or self-contained discipline. Denied recourse to a set of general principles, perhaps the student's most sensible introduction to economic development is through a study of 'leading issues' that are at the time a major preoccupation of the development economist and development practitioner"" .Sengupta quotes an authority who wrote 18 years ago. Academic and operating development economists today know full well that existing theory is quite deficient. Sociologists, political scientists and engineers in this field also know that economic, social, political and technical development involves all academic disciplines.Sengupta indicates that tariffs in developed countries prevent less developed countries from supplying refined metal, or manufactured and semi-manufactured products. He lists Zambia, Chile and Zaire as examples of copper concentrate exporters, as inadequately shown in Table 1. He is wrong."
