"Today the common recycling technologies of automotive catalysts are either energy intensive pyrometallurgical processes generating huge amounts of residues or hydrometallurgical ones which have to cope with effluent problems. Next to that, other valuable metals beside PGMs such as rare earths from the wash coat are not recovered.Therefore, the present paper introduces a hydrometallurgical concept developed in cooperation with the company Railly & Hill for the recovery of the PGMs as well as cerium from the wash coat of the catalysts in a closed loop. Next to the process concept, the required parameters for the different steps are discussed, including the chemical reactions, leaching efficiencies and mass flows, which form the basis for an economic estimation of the concept.Contrary to the pyrometallurgical recycling where the monolith is completely melted down to slag which is typically dumped, in this process the remaining monolith forms an utilizable product for the ceramics/refractory industry. As a result of the closed loop of the leaching media an environmentally friendly process was developed from which nearly no new residues or effluents are generated, with a sustainable usage of chemicals."

"The hematite surface plays a vital role in several processes of industrial and technological importance, such as, in beneficiation of iron ores, catalysis, and geochemical processes. Therefore, it is imperative to have a clear description of the structure and composition of this surface, which forms the underlying basis for such a wide variety of complex phenomena. Particularly, from the perspective of beneficiation of Indian alumina-rich iron ore slimes and fines, a clear understanding of the surface structure and composition of hematite surface and its difference from the alumina surface will facilitate identification and/or design of selective reagents which can be used to separate the two minerals. In this work, the hydroxylated hematite (0001) surface was modeled using density functional theory (DFT). The computed planar relaxations are consistent with X-Ray crystal truncation rod diffraction results reported in the literature. It is demonstrated that only one type of surface, that is, the (OH)3-Fe-H3O3-R is stable under aqueous conditions, as the relaxations for the second type of termination: (OH)3-Fe-Fe-R do not match quantitatively with experiments suggesting that its coexistence with the (OH)3-Fe-H3O3-R surface is unlikely. A detailed analysis of this surface shows that two of the three (OH) groups are not connected to the Fe surface atom. Instead, they form H2O molecules by combining with the H-atoms on the O-layer beneath the Fe-terminated surface leaving the Fe surface-atom bonded to only one OH-group. This undercoordination of Fe-atoms on the surface explains its higher reactivity as compared to hydroxylated alumina.INTRODUCTIONThe hematite surface plays a vital role in several processes of industrial and technological importance. Particularly, from the perspective of beneficiation of Indian alumina-rich iron ore slimes and fines, this is an important problem, as a clear understanding of the surface structure and composition of hematite surface and its difference from the alumina surface will facilitate identification and/or design of selective reagents which can be used to separate the two minerals. Our current research focus is at employing molecular modeling techniques to come up with such selective reagents and then test their efficacy in the practical scenario through selective dispersion – flocculation labscale experiments and subsequently plant trials. Obviously, the correct structure and composition of the hydroxylated hematite surface is a fundamental prerequisite for such investigations."

"IntroductionThe Ancient Egyptians recovered gold from the mud in the bottom of ponds by having teams of maidens sit around the pond dipping goose feathers dipped in grease into the mud. The gold would preferentially stick to the oily surface and was periodically washed off to give a gold concentrate. This was a forerunner of today's flotation processes.In Greek mythology Jason and the Argonauts pursued the Golden Fleece, which was a primitive form of gravity concentrate produced when gold ore slurry was passed over a sheeps fleece. The heavy gold settled and was caught in the fleece, producing a rich concentrate that allowed Jason & Company to perform the first recorded case of highgrading. The process was a forerunner of todays shuiceboxes used in placer mining.From these simple beginnings, gold metallurgy has progressed to a state where very complex flowsheets are proposed, sometimes to perform a simple metallurgical task. Figure (i) shows a hypothetical flowsheet to identify the range of unit processes that might be brought to bear on a refractory ore. "Two modified centrifugal flotation cells (CFC), Q2 and Q3 models, have been developed for froth flotation. The operating mechanism of Q2 uses a rotating bowl to create a centrifugal force on the feeding slurry. Froth concentrate is collected on the central top of the cell and tailing is discharged along the top edge of the rotating bowl. The Q3 utilizes a vertical rotating feed pipe to introduce the feed slurry into a stationary flotation column cell. A centrifugal force is also created by a rotating pipe for the feeding slurry. Froth concentrate floats over the cell and tailing discharges through the bottom of the cell. The centrifugal force causes the flotation recovery of fine particles from CFC to be higher than from the conventional cell. The major operating variables of CFC are the rotating speed, air flow rate into feed slurry, and slurry feeding rate etc. Flotation tests have been carried out on synthetic mixtures of galena-silica and chalcopyrite-silica, as well as some natural base metal ore samples. Parallel tests were also conducted on a conventional flotation cell. The comparative test results demonstrated that both Q2 and Q3 have the advantage of higher recovery of finer than 10 µm mineral particles, which are very difficult for the conventional non-centrifugal flotation cell to recover. The grade-recovery curves produced from CFC are equivalent to or better than the conventional flotation cell. There is a potential in the future for the CFC to be employed in slime flotation.1. IntroductionA centrifugal flotation cell (CFC) was originally developed by Clean Earth Technologies [I] to separate oil from water and was subsequently applied in froth flotation. Figure 1 illustrates the design of the original CFC, in which a vertical feeding pipe is attached to the center part of a rotating drum and a stationary shell encloses it to direct the float froth and tailing discharge. The slurry flows down to the bottom of the spinning drum, gets in touch with a screen of air bubbles and then migrates outwards under the effect of centrifugal force. After the mineralized froth enters the rotating cell, it is pushed back to the inner surface. The overflowing froth is collected in the froth launder while the tailing slurry is discharged through orifices along the outer rim of the drum."

"Westmin Resources operates a mine/mill complex at Myra Falls and produces copper and zinc concentrates with minor associations of gold, silver, and lead from a polymetallic, massive sulphide orebody. Mill flotation performance has historically been plagued by periods of uncontrollably high circulating loads leading to low concentrate grades and below optimal tails. This led to a detailed examination of the flotation process. Locked cycle, and pilot plant data are presented. In addition, plant design and commissioning as well as column cell details are discussed. A comparison between actual and predicted performance is also presented. Benefits realized are higher copper and zinc concentrate grades and improved zinc recovery.PrologueMyra Falls Operations is located at the south end of Suttle Lake in Strathcona Provincial Park. Access to the mine site is provided by a 90km paved highway from Campbell River, British Columbia.The mine and facilities are nestled in the narrow Myra Valley between Mount Phillips and Mount Myra. These steep, rugged mountains rise from the valley floor at an elevation of 900 feet to summits of almost 6000 feet. The steep slopes are heavily wooded with fir, hemlock, and cedar up to an elevation of 4000 feet where a transition to alpine meadows occurs. The summits are craggy rock faces, some capped with glacial ice. Myra Creek winds its way through the valley dropping several hundred feet into Suttle Lake. Precipitation is high at over 100 inches per year, which may include up to 10 feet of snow in winter. The temperature may range from 32° C in summer to -18° C in winter.Myra Falls began production in 1965 with the Lynx Mine, supplemented by the Myra and Price Mines in subsequent years, feeding a 950 stpd mill up until the middle of 1985 when the H-W mine was brought into production. The original mill was replaced with a modern 2700 mtpd facility and in 1988 production was increased to 4000 mtpd.Both Lynx and H-W mines are currently in production producing an average of 3650 mtpd. The ore minerals are primarily sphalerite and chalcopyrite, with subordinate galena, bornite, tetrahedrite, and electrum."

Tin-mining activities have taken place in the region of the German Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) for over hundreds of years up until 1991. For long times, gravity separation processes used to be the dominating beneficiation approach in those mining districts to recover cassiterite, the main tin-bearing mineral. For fine (< 100 µm) and very fine (< 20 µm) particles these approaches might not represent effective techniques, significant valuable materials could not be recovered and reported to tailings, where it was subsequently disposed. Thus, there are substantial amounts of cassiterite still present in these tailings disposals, most of it as very fine particles with already high degrees of liberation. That fact brings these tailings disposals into focus for potential reprocessing using beneficiation approaches, which are more sensitive to fine and very fine particles. In this paper we present results concerning the laboratory-scale treatment of material from exemplary heaps of the former Altenberg and Ehrenfriedersdorf mining sites using various flotation methods (including conventional froth flotation and oil-assisted flotation). Different size ranges of the material were previously prepared in order to investigate their response to the different techniques. For the study, special emphasis is put on agglomeration flotation, an oil-assisted flotation method. Therefore, an aliphatic oil phase of alkane basis is used to either selectively aggregate or collect the cassiterite particles. Recovery and flotation performance results are presented with respect to different process parameters: various collectors (including sulphosuccinamates and phosphonic acids) and depressants (including sodium fluorosilicate and oxalic acid) regime, oil dosage, agitation time and pulp density during oil/pulp agitation. Furthermore, the oil/particle aggregation behavior is analyzed via particle image analysis and, additionally, collector adsorption characteristics are investigated by contact angle measurements and zeta potential analysis. The data obtained is correlated with the testwork results achieved in order to interpret the flotation response of very fine cassiterite particles.

"The last time I spoke to you the potash industry was at a low point. Markets were bad and the industry depressed. Many people had left and there was very little being done in terms of development. The current situation is very much changed. The oversupply conditions have given way to a very tight supply capability. All of the firms in the business are expanding in one way or another. These expansions will run from simple debottlenecking through to complete new projects.In New Brunswick, the Potash Corporation of America is proceeding with a new project and the Dennison - Potacan Project is in progress. In Saskatchewan, the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan has an ambitious 2.5 billion dollar expansion program underway while those in the private sector are taking a somewhat less ambitious but equally significant approach to obtain further tonnage out of existing facilities.The significance of these expansions to mineral processors is that we can expect to see expanded employment opportunities and through necessity a surge in innovation and development in an industry that has been traditionally very conservative. This presentation will review potash processing with a view towards highlighting some of the more recent developments."

"Aggregation, i.e., the tendency of particles to cluster, can be expected to influence flotation selectivity. In this paper, a method of measuring aggregation is introduced and used to conduct plant surveys.Aggregation is measured using settling rate and turbidity converted to an aggregation index (AI) where 0 corresponds to most dispersed and 1 to most aggregated over the range of conditions tested, normally pH. Surveys of Cu and Zn flotation stages at four concentrators showed the AI increased significantly above pH 9. The metal ions identified in the process waters, principally Ca and Mg, were tested to determine which might be responsible. The presence of Mg was found to be the most important. In doping tests, Mg was shown to cause significant variation in AI over the pH range of 9 to 12.The impact of Mg was restricted to pH > 9. Over this pH range, Mg forms a range of hydroxy species, including Mg(OH)2 precipitates. An aggregation mechanism associated with these precipitates, electrostatic bridging, is suggested. Possible problems and opportunities in flotation practice arising from the findings are discussed."

This paper presents a three-tier web-based GIS application that uses Java Server Page (JSP), Java Servlet and relational database to manage performance monitoring and reporting in the oil sands mining industry. It is a real-time Earth Structure Performance Monitoring System (ESPMS), which allows the user to record and store instrumentation monitoring readings as well as technical observations and instrumentation installation documentations into a complete relational database. The ESPMS introduces the advantages of precise field record keeping, due diligence, security, consistency and completeness while at the same time simplifying the task of reporting. ESPMS combines web-based Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping and data management to facilitate the collection, organization, retrieval, reporting and communication of the vast amounts of monitoring data related to mining and tailings engineering associated with site investigation and construction information. ESPMS utilizes web-based GIS technology to incorporate referenced aerial photographs, Energy, Mines and Resources (EMR) maps or AutoCAD drawings as a base map for the monitoring site. It dynamically creates and administers all instrumentation monitoring locations and reading frequencies. It enables the user to collect and manage the data associated with an unlimited number of reading events. It provides the designer with real-time monitoring data (what, why, when, how), thereby allowing them to make early adjustments to design protocols or procedures, or to take remedial action(s) regarding the subject earth structure under construction or after completion. It provides more cost-effective reporting and data sharing through the Internet. It improves security on data entry and eliminates unauthorized data changes. It allows better integration of graphics and illustrations with numerical data files. It is capable of managing the continually expanding workload resulting from new and larger structures in the oil sands or other mineral mining industries. The ESPMS facilitates easier data gathering for preparation of as-built and after-built or regulatory reports, etc. It enables quick location of the interested instruments and summarization of the performance of the instruments. It enables one to visualize performance data and QA/QC construction test results spatially on any given cross-section. Data can be exported to MS Excel for detailed analysis and to evaluate the stability of the earth structures.

"1. INTRODUCTIONIn the past two decades, low-grade gold and silver ore bodies in the United States have been exploited by heap leaching, primarily with sodium cyanide solutions. This method has proven to be a viable alternative to conventional milling due to its low capital and operating costs. Successes have been made, particularly in Nevada, where ores are well oxidized and the climate is conducive to this method. in recent years, heap leaching has been tried in northern latitudes with some success, however, in using this method, operators face more severe limitations than do their neighbours to the south.This paper evaluates the limitations of heap leaching with particular emphasis on northern climates and introduces an alternative method to recover precious metal values in a continuous vat. This proprietory technology, known as the Mackie Vat Leaching Jig, shows promise, with improved gold recovery and potential to operate in cold climates.2. WHAT ARE THE LIMITATIONS TO HEAP LEACHING?Heap leaching of non-refractory ores is subject to the following limitations:1. Minimum amount of free gold and nuggets in the ore.?. Enargite (Cu3AsS4) belongs among refractory copper minerals with very low hydrometallurgical extractability of copper. An application of enargite leaching in acid solutions leads to simultaneous dissolution of copper and arsenic and the final leach solutions have to be treated for the separation of both elements. However, the alkaline leaching of enargite is selective. Arsenic passes into leach while produced copper sulphide represents the raw material suitable for pyrometallurgy. The hydrometallurgical processing of mineral can be influenced positively by mechanochemical route. We have shown that more than 80 % of arsenic can be extracted from enargite concentrate by atmospheric alkaline leaching at 95 °C when mechanical activation in an attritor is applied. The produced Cu2S can be further treated with elemental iron where mechanochemical intervention is applied in the second stage of enargite processing. The final product forms Cu/FeS nanocomposite from which copper nanoparticles can be easily separated. The illustrated concept of copper obtaining from copper sulphide is an example of so-called “dry” processing, as reactions in gas and liquid phases are excluded. This concept of environmentally friendly metallurgical processing can be classified as an impetus for novel technology to produce copper from enargite concentrates.

"The sillimanite group minerals, kyanite, sillimanite and andalusite are identified as alumino-silicate minerals with the common chemical composition AIP3.Si02&apos; so that each possesses similar physical properties. Kyanite is the most abundant mineral and mainly occurs in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia; sillimanite occurs in Ontario and Manitoba; and andalusite in Nova Scotia. The main use for the sillimanite-group minerals is in refractory applications for the production of refractory bricks and shapes. In refractory applications, the main performance criterion is the relative percentage of mullite formed within the material during firing. This phase gives a greater degree of resistance to creep deformation and slag attack, and improves the ability of the refractory to withstand high temperatures under load. The beneficiation of refractory silicate minerals has been the subject of many investigations at CANMET, and the former Mines Branch. Eighteen kyanite, two sillimanite, and three andalusite evaluation studies were conducted between 1933 and 1987. A review of some of the more important studies is presented, which includes information concerning mineralogy, beneficiation methods and flotation data."

"Those who submit competing proposals for projects seek to present senior management with complete and fully supported material that will not fail under questioning. Hopefully, misleading notions and omissions will have been minimized and there will have been testing of the assumptions regarding the economic, social and political environments.A capital project evaluation team can do management and itself a service by including a sound approach to the impact of inflation (and its twin problem, interest) on a project and a great disservice with an inappropriate approach to inflation.InflationHandled deftly, inflation can alter a project evaluation to show almost any result the handler desires. It must be a constant source of frustration for design people and cost estimators to spend weeks perfecting the technical aspects of a project in order to minimize costs, only to have all of their efforts set awash in a sea of financial and economic assumptions that submerge all of the detail. In all of this, inflation is perhaps the largest offender, with inflation criteria often being brought to bear at the last minute, almost as an afterthought. Perhaps this tardiness reflects the difficulty of the subject and the belief that senior management will take its own approach to the problems of inflation. Such a belief is unfair to senior management, for it is entitled to not being misled by omission. It is entitled to the full use of the skills of the evaluating team, including reasonable assumptions of the impact of inflation.Working in a consulting context, one has the opportunity to participate in the evaluation of a large number of projects."

WHEN times are booming and metal prices are high, most mining men pay little attention to the industrial mineral industry. However, when metal prices drop and mines close down, many mining eyes begin to scan the less glamorous non-metallic field. For some this proves a temporary diversion, but others find this branch of mining, with its generally more stable conditions, to their liking and enter it permanently. The resulting gradual influx of trained mining men into the industrial mineral industry ?has been one of several factors responsible for the rise in production of non-metallic materials in our Province. Another and ?perhaps the most important factor influencing the production of industrial minerals has been the growth in the population of British Columbia. Because most industrial minerals .are low priced and either heavy or bulky commodities they are normally sold on relatively local markets. Thus the extent of the development of the industrial mineral industry of a region is largely governed by the size of the population and the level of industrialization of that region. This point is well shown by com-paring population and industrial mineral production statistics for 1936, 1946, and 1956 (see Figure 1)9. Note that not only has the overall production rate grown with the population increase, but that the per capita production has risen greatly.

"Tires, although not always the largest single cost item in open-pit mining operations, will place in the top three, along with explosives and fuel. How this high-cost supply is controlled is dependent upon on an efficient tire program. The success of this program is, in turn, dependent upon the people who are directly associated with tires and their use, namely: the mine&apos;s tire personnel, the tire sales representatives and a technician for the rubber company. The technician will relay his observations and information received from the mine personnel back to the manufacturer with recommendations to overcome current problems .Haulage truck tire life and costs in a hard rock open-pit mine are governed and controlled by four important factors:I) Field control.2) Operating within manufacturer&apos;s guidelines.3) Different tire purchasing methods.4) Scrap piles.Field ControlPerhaps the most influential people involved in this program are those who live with the tire through every hour of its lifespan: the truck driver, the shovel operator, the dozer operator, the grader operator and the shift boss. Of these, the truck driver has the most control, in that he can drive over or around rock s as these situations arise. The loading area, the edge of the haul road and the dump account for most of the tire injuries.This is why shovel, dozer and grader operators must appreciate their influence on haulage tire life. Spillage cleanup must be ongoing and is not being done adequately if any of these operators are idle. The shift boss that drives by a rock on the road without removing it or calling for a cleanup has little recourse with the truck driver who runs over it-he has sanctioned the driver&apos;s actions by his own neglect."

The system of mining statistics for Canada, as it exists today, represents the result of long years of progress, first by the Geological Survey, later and more comprehensively by the Mines Branch of the Department of Mines, and now by the Mining Branch of the Dominion Bureau of Statistics-all supplemented by the very comprehensive reports published by the several provincial departments of mines. It is the purpose of this paper briefly to state the development and present status of Canada&apos;s statistical service, more particularly in regard to information on mineral production, and to show that in its evolution continuous progress has been made in the elimination of factors tending to duplication and overlaping, with the result that the construction of an adequate statistical service has been carried out with the least possible expenditure of .public funds. For the purpose of this discussion, the subject of mineral statistics may conveniently be considered from two points of view. The technical difficulties in obtaining satisfactory and complete data from the variety of industries represented in the mining fields of Canada must be apparent to all. Methods of record-keeping are almost as numerous as mines and even the larger concerns which maintain elaborate records for their own information, often find it difficult to compile the statistical reports required of them, because the specific form of inquiry differs from the method in use in their offices.

"In today&apos;s operating and investment climate, project evaluation is both more important and more difficult. It is more important because economic and financial analyses of a proposed project provide a basis for judgment of a project&apos;s commercial viability by equity participants, lenders and, in some cases, other participants such as off takers and governments. It is more difficult because these analyses must, of necessity, be based on estimates, projections and evaluations which must be made in a period remarkable for its economic and political uncertainty.Project evaluation starts with the analysis of the engineering, commercial and financial information available. Beginning with the preliminary design and capital cost estimates, alternative financing plans can be developed outlining possible sources of funds, terms and security arrangements. Pro-forma financial statements can also be developed, including sources and uses of funds, cash flow schedules, income statements and balance sheets. With these results, various profitability measures can be determined.Subsequently, in an effort to deal with uncertainty, these results can be tested by measuring the impact on project viability and profitability of changes in project and external variables such as product process, mining and processing rates, operating and financing costs, currency exchange rates and other factors.The results are a number of financial projections reflecting different assumptions for key project parameters. The projections can be used to structure the project to achieve the maximum financial performance. Projects, the financial viability and profitability of which can be demonstrated under varying market conditions, will be the most competitive in capital markets."

Basic Assumptions about PeopleMost people in an organization, regardless of level, take pride in their work and generally want to do a good job. When performance falls off, there is usually some explanation other than the employee not really caring. People like to know their exact responsibilities and clearly what is expected of them. People like to know where they stand with the boss and would like to be evaluated on what they do and accomplish, rather than on what others think or feel about them. Further, people like to be rewarded for their good results, indeed, to understand what motivates people, we must look at what happens as a result of their actions.
