has been no commercial production of either perlite or pumice in British Columbia. Several promising occurrences are known to exist but their development has been delayed due to difficult access and / or remote locations. The Empire Valley perlite deposit is located 120 km east of Clinton. The deposit appears to be a flat-lying volcanic flow 50 to 70 m thick that is part of an Eocene rhyolite and dacite volcanic assemblage. The Francois Lake perlite deposit occurs on the north shore of Francois Lake where perlite is part of a rhyolitic volcanic sequence. The exposure of perlite is about 13 m thick and is considered to be Eocene or Oligocene in age. The Uncha Lake perlite deposit is located about 5 km south Industrial Minerals in Canada of Uncha Lake. Perlite appears to be intercalated with porphyritic rhyolite flows that are comparable to those at Francois Lake. Showings are widespread but poorly exposed and thicknesses are unknown. The Mount Meager pumice deposit is located in the Lillooet River valley at the base of Plinth Mountain. Coarse pumice agglomerate forms a large talus slope that is undercut by the river. Unsorted, angular fragments up to 50 cm in diameter are intermixed with up to 30 per cent of sand and silt-sized particles. The exposed zone is about 200 m long and 50 m high; it is being considered as a source of lightweight aggregate.

Drilling high-pressure/high-temperature wells in salt rock formations is still a challenge for the energy industry. Creep and solubility is part of the salt rock physical-chemical behaviour, which must be considered in the design of the wells. The stress redistribution caused by drilling, in addition to thermallyactivated processes, triggers creep deformation, leading to borehole closure and the imposition of loads on the casing. The drilling fluid is designed by computer modeling in order to control the creep strain rate to a limit which allows the drilling operations and the casing setting. Depending upon the composition of the drilling fluid, chemical reactions on the salt wall may occur, especially in case of water-based fluids in highly soluble salt rocks. In those cases, cavities by dissolution (washouts) can be generated and the casing column remains uncovered by the cementation and laterally unconfined along the cavity length. This scenario is propitious to the loss of integrity of the casing due to phenomena such as plastic collapse, buckling and non-uniform loading on the casing provoked by the closure of salt formation around it. The casing should remain intact during the wellbore life-time. In this work, a section of a typical well crossing salt formation composed by halite and carnallite is considered. An idealized-cylindrical washout cavity inside a highly soluble salt layer is assumed. The purpose here is to evaluate the effect of the dimensions of the cavity on the integrity of the casing. Several typical diameters and lengths of the cavity are adopted. Numerical analyses are carried out with an in-house finite-element system composed by the pre-processor MTOOL 3D®, the simulator ANVEC 3D® and the post-processor POS 3D®. Salt rocks are modeled as visco-elastic materials. Creep is simulated by the Double Mechanism Creep Law, widely employed in Brazilian salt rock mechanics research. Cement and casing (steel) are modeled as elasto-plastic materials described by the Mohr-Coulomb and the von Mises criteria, respectively. Casing integrity is evaluated with respect to vertical and horizontal displacements. Vertical displacements imposed to the casing can provoke the failure of the column by plastic collapse or by buckling. Besides that, horizontal displacements of salt due to creep closure shall lead to the undesirable contact with the casing. Failure envelopes based on displacements are generated. The results of the simulations have shown that the casing failure by plastic collapse occurs preferentially in short columns, as well as buckling occurs in long and slender columns. The occurrence of both failure modes is more frequent in large-diameter cavities. Additionally, failure caused by contact between salt and casing occurs preferentially in short-diameter cavities.

Sedimentary phosphate-bearing rocks are found over a considerable area of so utheastern British Columbia that extends from Fernie east to the Alberta-British Columbia boundary and from the International Boundary northward to the headwatei: s of the Elk River. Phosphatic beds occur at the following four stratigraphic levels: 1. lower part of the Banff-Exshaw sequence of Mississippian age; 2. lshbel Formation of Permian age; 3. base of the Fernie Group of Jurassic age; 4. belemnite bed within the Rock Creek Member of the lower part of the Fernie Group. To date, considerable tonnages of phosphate rock have been proven in the area. However, no commercial production has been initiated because of a relatively low P2O5 grade. Data on assays and thicknesses of the phosphatic beds are in part recalculated from the paper by Telfer (I 933) and in part from assessment reports filed at the British Columbia Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources.

"Those of us who have been concerned with the problem of geophysical exploration in southwestern Ontario have followed the development of the Poulter method with much interest. I have much appreciated the opportunity of reading an advance copy of Dr. Poulter's clear exposition and of preparing the following brief remarks on the probable applicability of the method to the Palaeozoic area of southwestern Ontario.During the years 1944 to 1946, the Ontario Department of Mines, in co-operation with the Union Gas Company and the Dominion Natural Gas Company, operated an experimental party in the hope of establishing a seismic technique appropriate to the •area. The results were completely negative. During two summers' field work, no reflections whatever were obtained except in one area near Windsor. It is the •purpose of these remarks to inquire whether Dr. Poulter's techniques might yield favourable results.It was the conclusion of the report on our work that two principal causes contributed to the failure of the method. In the first place, the geological column possesses few elastic discontinuities and those that exist appear to have low reflection coefficients. In the second place, the area is drift-covered in general. This drift complicates the situation by absorbing seismic energy and by giving rise to groups of complicating refracted phases which obscure the entire interesting section of the record. The situation is further complicated by the high reflection velocities and the relative shortness of the Palaeozoic section, these factors combining to bring in a reflection from the basement in about half a second."

"Abstract - North American Palladium Ltd. operates its Lac des Iles open pit palladium mine 85 km north of the city of Thunder Bay, Ontario. The Roby Zone deposit occurs within the mafic/ultramafic Lac des Iles Intrusive Complex (LDI-IC), which was created by multiple pulses of magma of varying composition within several closely spaced chambers. Chaotic lithological distribution, the presence of magmatic breccias, and the rarity of rhythmic layering suggest a dynamic intrusive environment with disruptive magma pulses. As of December 31, 2001, measured and indicated resources for the 950 m long by 815 m wide Roby Zone deposit totalled 159 Mt grading 1.55 g/t Pd, 0.17 g/t Pt, 0.12 g/t Au, 0.05% Cu, and 0.05% Ni at a palladium cut-off grade of 0.7 g/t. The Roby Zone contains an additional 73 Mt of inferred resources at similar grades.The Roby Zone is dominated by varitextured gabbro containing pipes and pods of breccia, and large blocks (~60 m across) of varying lithology. Mineralization at Lac des Iles occurs as: (1) a PGEand base metal-rich magmatic matrix of breccia (breccia ore); (2) mineralized dikes or sills (gabbronorite in North Roby ore); (3) lower-grade mineralization in varitextured units that are host to the distinctive breccia ore and envelope the North Roby ore; and (4) high-grade mineralization associated with strong silicate alteration exemplified by high-grade ore.The close spatial association of the mineralized breccias with both varitextured units and silicate alteration leads to an interpretation that the energetic magma that created breccia was charged with a dissolved fluid, and that this deuteric fluid exsolved at high temperatures to migrate through crystal mush, enhancing crystallization along its pathways, resulting in variable grain size. This transformation occurred at high temperature and produced sulfide-poor, varitextured gabbro-hosted mineralization exemplified by some of the mineralization in the North Roby Zone, and also found throughout the Roby Zone. The association of hydrous silicate alteration with mineralization can be explained by continuing fluid migration during cooling and continued metal transport. La distribution chaotique des lithologies, la présence de brèches magmatiques, et la quasi-absence de litage rythmique suggèrent un environnement magmatique dynamique perturbé par l’introduction de nouveau magma. Au 31 décembre 2001, les ressources mesurées et indiquées s’élevaient à 159 millions de tonnes titrant 1,55 g/t Pd, 0,17 g/t Pt, 0,12 g/t Au, 0,05% Cu, et 0,05% Ni, pour une teneur de coupure de 0,7 g/t Pd. De plus, la Roby Zone contient 73 millions de tonnes de ressources inférées à une teneur similaire.La Roby Zone est principalement encaissée dans un gabbro de texture hétérogène (varitextured) caractérisé par des cheminées et des lentilles de brèches et des énormes blocs (environ 60 m de diamètre) de plusieurs lithologies. Au Lac des Iles, la minéralisation en EGP et en métaux de base se retrouve dans la matrice magmatique de brèches (breccia ore), dans des dykes ou des sills minéralisés (gabbronorite dans la zone North Roby ore), comme minerai de basse teneur encaissant le minerai de brèche (breccia ore) et enveloppant la zone North Roby. Sand and gravel resources of the southern coastal region of British Columbia may be linked to various episodes of Wisconsin glaciation. During Wisconsin and probably earlier times, the Fraser Lowland and coastal areas were subjected to repeated glaciations separated by non-glacial intervals. Each major glaciation was accompanied by isostatic and eustatic changes in sea level up to 200 m or more. As a result, the Lowland was covered by the sea during much of Quaternary time. Because the Fraser Lowland is surrounded on two sides by high mountain ranges, glaciers terminated in the sea during their maximum advance. Therefore, meltwaters released during deglaciation, together wit h retreating glacier ice, could produce widespread and extensive sand and gravel deposits both along the coast and throughout the Fraser Lowland and adjacent areas.

"The Phoenix Camp, in the Boundary Creek district of southern British Columbia, produced before 1920 about 15 million tons of ore averaging more than l ·5 per cent copper, about 0.03 ounces per ton in gold, and 0·5 ounces per ton in silver. Attwood Copper Mines Ltd. conducted an exploration program in the Phoenix area from 1951to1953.Publications on the camp are listed in the bibliography. Brock's work was not sufficiently detailed to unravel the structural and stratigraphic pro bl.ems. The work of LeRoy and McNaughton is referred to later.The stratigraphic column is as follows:Tertiary.Midway Formation: Volcanics and hypabyssals; dacitic to basaltic flows, with associated dykes and sills of syenite (pulaskite in part) and augite porphyry.Jura-Cretaceous.Intrusives of quartz diorite and diorite (nearest outcrop two miles from Phoenix).Late Palaeozoic or Triassic (Attwood Series).Brooklyn Formation: Sharps tone conglomerate, limestone, grey-wacke and/ or andesitic tuff, with minor shale and basalt. Rawhide Formation: shale with minor conglomerate.Early Palaeozoic.Knob Hill Formation: Chert and andesite, with minor limestone, shale, and serpentine.This column differs from that of LeRoy in two important respects: (I) Attwood's work indicates that the Rawhide shale is basal to, rather than stratigraphically above, the Brooklyn formation. The shale contains conglomerate lenses, which become more abundant and thicker toward the top, and grades upward into Brooklyn conglomerate. Ripple marks indicate that the shale is right side up."

"Copper Electrowinning (EW) is a complex electrochemical process that involves the production of LME grade copper from copper rich electrolyte. The process involves the deposition of the copper ions onto the cathode from copper rich electrolyte with the production of oxygen bubbles at the anode. The process setups up a complex flow pattern within the cell as it is subjected to varying density gradients due to the deposition process along with oxygen bubble driven flow. It is a necessity to understand and quantify the flow behaviour within these cells in order to maintain the production of highest grade copper. In fact, the oxygen bubbles originating from the process is responsible for the generation of acid mist which is a designated as a carcinogen a major health hazard around EW tank houses. Hydrodynamic assessment of the process has so far been restricted to simple mass balances and some limited numerical modelling. All the models are based on assumed boundary conditions which has not so far been verified by any real-time physical measurement. This apparent gap has led to models which could not be directly used to track process changes or troubleshoot problems in EW tank houses. In order to address this gap, CSIRO has established a full size (width and height) transparent cell capable of simulating plant operating conditions (across the range currently used). With the use of sophisticated diagnostic analytical tools and measurement techniques it was possible to study all the operating variables (current density, flow rate, temperature, etc.) independently and their effect of bubble size, bubble velocity, gas hold-up as well as acid mist generation and its size. In order to address safety concerns in tank houses around acid mist early results outlining the factors contributing to its generation as well as the effect of various barriers to mitigate acid mist is outlined below.INTRODUCTIONA significant part of today’s copper production is through hydrometallurgical route which predominantly involves leaching, Solvent eXtraction (SX) followed by ElectroWinning (EW). Producing copper using this approach have shown to be environmentally friendly (Dresher, 2001) compared to the traditional smelting process. EW is the final step in the production of LME grade copper using the hydrometallurgy route. The electro-chemical process involves the use of a lead anode (Pb-Sn-Ca) and a stainless steel cathode to produce copper sheets using the copper rich electrolyte from the SX process and with the applications of direct current to the electrodes. This electro-chemical reaction results in the deposition of copper ions on the cathode with oxygen released from the anode as a by-product. Hydrodynamically, the oxygen bubbles create a bubble driven flow within the EW tanks with the surrounding electrolyte. A direct result of this could be seen from the quality of the copper deposited on the cathode. Most of the copper plates produced from the traditional tank houses have a rough texture at its bottom one-third while the top two-thirds have a smooth finish with a finer grain structure."

"The Guide to the Evaluation of Gold Deposits reviews the successive evaluation steps in the domains of geology, engineering, and economics. The Guide analyzes, in a systemic perspective, the sequence of exploration, development, and evaluation work required to bring a mineral deposit to production. The aim is to identify the metal/mineralization losses and ore dilution that each work step contributes to the evaluation and mining process. The procedure allows one to maximize the income and profits of a mining operation, and to reduce the risks of financial losses tied to investment decisions in the mining sector. For greater efficiency, the criteria of reserve estimation and classification should be integrated with the evaluation steps and methods. At earlier stages of deposit development, when quantitative knowledge is available mainly on the geological axis, the term ""delimited mineral deposit"" should be used. The term ""reserve"" should be used only in an operating mine or in a mining project, when information in the geological, engineering, and economic domains is adequate to ensure technical and financial feasibility. ""Reserves"" are by definition ""mining reserves"". Each category of proven/probable reserves and measured/indicated deposits should be subdivided into two classes to express better the many steps of mineral valuation. The category of ""possible reserves"" shall be replaced by that of ""inferred mineralization"". This system, derived from the Australasian Code, can easily be integrated into current practices of the exploration and mining industry within a short timeframe. The proposal to develop the use of the margins of error of the estimates at a confidence level of90% should be viewed in a longer timeframe. Establishing the precision of the mineral inventories and distinguishing between categories and classes by means of the margin of error will require more work and a longer break-in period.SOMMAIRELe ""Guide d’évaluation des gisements d'or"" analyse, dans une approche systémique, les travaux d'évaluation et de mise en valeur des gisements minéraux dans l'axe de la géologie, dans l'axée l'ingénierie et dans I ‘axe de l'économique. Chaque catégories des réserves, prouvée et probable sera subdivisée en deux classes pour mieux qualifier les niveaux d'évaluation du projet. La catégorie actuelle des réserves possibles sera remplacée par celle des ""minéralisations inférées"". Plusieurs essais démontrent que le système propose, qui s'inspire du Code australasien, peut facilement et rapidement s'intégrer dans les pratiques de l'industrie. II pourrait également contribuer à une standardisation des méthodes et des nomenclatures à l'échelle internationale. La proposition d'utiliser les marges d'erreur des estimes au niveau de confiance de90%pour caractériser les estimations se situe dans une plus longue perspective. "Electrical disintegration (ED) has been well known as a good comminution method to improve liberation of compositional phases because it was reported that electron avalanche could occur preferentially at phase boundary. But the detailed mechanism of the ED has been still not known. This paper describes the results of ED experiments using synthetic binary sample, copper/resin, under the conditions of various distance between electrodes, and discusses the energy distribution in the three kinds of phenomena in the ED process, which are(1) streamer progression in water, (2) electron avalanche in water, and (3) electron avalanche in solid sample, by measuring current and voltage with elapsed time. Then, it has been found that the energy distribution in the phenomenon (1) is quite low and that the distribution in the phenomenon(2) had a considerably large compared with that in the(3), which indicates that the shockwave generated in water could contribute much to the sample breakage.INTRODUCTIONElectrical disintegration (ED) has been well known as a specific comminution technology which enhanced selective breakage at phase boundary and lead to a good liberation among compositional phases1-6),but the detailed mechanism has not been clarified yet. "RÉSUMÉPour maintenir de bonnes performances technique et économique dans l’exploitation par chambres vides (open stope) il est primordial d’assurer un contrôle efficace des limites réelles des chantiers d’abattage. C’est pour cette raison que, de plus en plus souvent, les opérateurs miniers utilisent un dispositif de laser (Cavity Monitoring System: CMS) qui permet de mesurer les dimensions réelles de chantiers en vue de calculer principalement la dilution et les pertes du minerai ainsi que d’autres paramètres. Malheureusement, il n’existe présentement aucune méthodologie commune, qui permettrait d’interpréter ces résultats selon les mêmes critères pour faciliter d’évaluations juste et précise de la réalisation par rapport à la planification en vue d’en apporter de corrections, dans les différentes opérations minières, si nécessaire. Dans la première partie du présent article on discute les principales séquences d’exploitation utilisées dans l’extraction par chambres vides. Par la suite, à l’aide des sections transversales et longitudinales on illustre toutes les phases des travaux miniers. Ceci en vue de permettre au lecteur de comprendre mieux c’est qui peut se passer effectivement dans les chantiers d’abattage. Par après on donne les définitions générales de principaux facteurs de performance technique. Finalement, l’exemple numérique, élaboré à partir des résultats de l’arpentage au laser effectué par la mine Bousquet 2 dans un chantier d’abattage, donne les détails concernant les définitions ainsi que les valeurs de nombreux facteurs de performance technique, qui pourraient être utilisés, par après, par les opérateurs miniers dans le suivi de leurs exploitations souterraines."

In the western part of the Chapais syncline (Abitibi-east, Quebec), the lava flows belonging to the Haliy Formation separate in two distinct sequences. The basal sequence contains prophyri tic metabasalts of calc-alkaline af f inity overlain by porphyritic metatrachyandesites and metatrachytes of alkaline to shoshonitic affinity. The upper sequence contains porphyritic metabasalts similar to those of the basal sequence along with highly potassic metaandesites trending to a subalkaline affinity. A geochemical study of trace and REE elements established that the composition of these lava flows results from a mixing or contamination process. The primitive tholeiitic liquids which are enriched in LREE were modified by the addition of a crustal contaminant enriched in Y, Zr, Th and K20. The magmatic liquids resulted from successive steps in the admixing process, evolved by fractionated crystallization. The mechanism of gradual admixing seems to be the major cause of the observed ea le-alkaline characteris ties and may also be the cause of the alkaline to shoshoni tic affinity in those lavas. The tendency to differentiation by fractional crystallization reveals the tholeiitic character of the primitive liquids.
