Outokumpu has developed a new chloride leaching process called HydroCopper®. In this process copper sulfide concentrates are leached at atmospheric pressure in concentrated sodium chloride solution using cupric ions as the oxidant. Copper is recovered from the purified leach solution by precipitating cuprous oxide, which is then reduced to pure copper and further melted and cast directly into copper products. The key reactants: sodium hydroxide, hydrogen and chlorine are generated from the spent sodium chloride using chlor-alkali technology. An important feature in the HydroCopperTM process is that the gold contained in copper concentrates is leached as chloride complexes and recovered from solution by activated carbon. Conditions for the leaching of gold-bearing pyrite can also be achieved in the chloride system by optimizing the redox conditions. This paper deals with the basic factors affecting gold leaching from copper sulfide concentrates. Opportunities for the recovery of refractory gold associated with arsenopyrite and pyrite will also be discussed.

This paper deals with the prediction of locked cycle flotation results from data developed from individual batch tests. A postulate is made that the distribution of material in a separation stage is determined by the chemical conditions and the flotation time and that this distribution can be characterized by split factors which are constants for a fixed set of conditions. With this premise, it is demonstrated that a steady-state balance can be calculated for a circuit. Although the necessary equations can be solved algebraically, a computer program was written that uses an iterative technique to arrive at the steady-state balance. The program is written so that a variety of circuits can readily be simulated. A number of examples are examined to demonstrate the validity of this simulation procedure. The sensitivity of the material balance to changes in the split factors was examined. Data developed from different flowsheets are presented on sulphide ores, on copper-nickel separation and on silver flotation.

The diffusion barrier coating system (DBC system) was designed to suppress interdiffusion between alloy substrate and coatings in addition to ensuring slow oxide growth at high temperatures. In this report the concept of the DBC system will be introduced, and the results obtained for various heat-resistant alloys are presented. In this DBC system the s-phase of the Re-Cr-Ni system was selected as the barrier and is formed by electroplating Re-Ni and Ni films from aqueous solutions, followed by Cr and/or Al pack cementations. A typical DBC system consists of Ni-base superalloy / triple s-Re based alloy layer / ?’-Ni3Al and/or ß-NiAl (with or without Pt addition) / a-Al2O3. It was found that the DBC system maintained its structure for long time exposures because the s phase has tie-lines with the ? and ?’ alloy substrate and the ?’ and/or ß coating. The s-Re based alloy can suppress both the inward Al diffusion and the outward diffusion of alloying elements. The DBC system was successfully applied to various heat-resistant alloys such as Ni-Mo and Fe-Cr-Al based alloys, and these alloys with the DBC system were creep-deformed slowly under external applied stresses. A simultaneous diffusion coating process for Al and Hf was developed using Hf+NH4Cl+Al2O3 pack cementation. To obtain reliable and long-life coatings the combination of alloy substrate, coating, and external scale should be considered as a total system, to optimize oxidation resistance, structural stability, and mechanical properties.

"Rational exploration requires the prior selection of areas possessing excellent geological potential and minimum hazards to commercial development . Within an over-all strategy of grass-roots exploration, two procedures for selecting areas for (i) coal and (ii) metals exploration are described. The procedures explicitly balance infrastructure requirements and environmental concerns for areas of geological merit not alienated in parks and reserves. Through consensus, priorities are attached to those areas meriting closer scrutiny and field reconnaissance.IntroductionMining companies need to know that having made a potentially economic discovery, they will be allowed to develop it with minimum delay and at reasonable cost. The environment for exploration in British Columbia is complex and recent experience suggests that conditions are not becoming any easier. Conflicts over land use issues, preservation and economic development are common. The high cost of exploration requires that the risks should be offset where possible by: (i) carefully selecting the areas in which to work (ii) conducting operations in a responsible manner, and (iii) working cooperatively with the community of interests. This paper concerns the first action: prior selection of areas.To aid exploration planning at Suncor, a procedure was developed to grade those areas of the province possessing favourable geology according to the ease with which a mine might be developed . This had to be done within the constraints of the company's over-all approach to exploration. This emphasizes ""grass-roots"" exploration of self-generated projects in British Columbia. In addition, having selected a favourable belt of rocks, it is intended to persevere there while steadily adding to the accumulated data base and local experience. Hence, it is intended to concentrate on an area. This implies a long-term commitment to an area which in turn increases the importance of the original selection.Suncor's search is directed to finding base and precious metals in intrusive and volcanic environments, and export quality coal."

Continuum damage mechanics (CDM) of rocks is studied together with their elastic and plastic behaviors to develop simulation tools for hydraulic fracturing jobs in naturally fractured formations. The model is constituted based upon pressure sensitive inelastic deformation of porous rocks and their damage mechanisms in the cases of drained and undrained conditions. The CDM model is formulated within Fracture mechanics framework. The performance of the developed elastoplastic and CDM models are compared with the available test data of a specific shale play. The hydraulic fractures growth in the reservoir scale is then simulated; in which the effect of fluid viscosity, natural fractures characteristics and differential stresses on induced fracture network is studied. The simulation results are compared with the available solutions in the literature. The developed CDM model outperforms the traditional fracture mechanics approaches by removing stress singularities at the fracture tips and simulation of progressive fractures without any essential need for remeshing.

"Raise mining at the Namew Lake Nickel Mine in Manitoba uses 3 m diameter bored raises driven at 45 to 50 degrees dip for stope access and drilling. These raises are developed within the orebody on 20 m centres to accommodate electric-hydraulic longhole jumbos and charging wagons. Critical elements of stope development include delineation of are contacts, control of deviation during raise development, optimal stope sequencing to permit a high extraction rate, drill anchorage installation, production drilling and blasting, and ground control. Procedures to deal with these elements are described, with emphasis on the geotechnical investigation for design of open stopes and pillars.Although mining with drilled raises does not have the flexibility to follow large variations in orebody dip, results to date indicate that it can be used successfully in the thicker ore zones. Thinner zones are currently mined using a modified Avoca method. Some flexibility to accommodate variations in orebody dip in thin are zones may be obtained by using alimack raise climbers to drive access raises, and carry longhole drills and charging equipment. Rock quality has been sufficiently good to maintain stable stope walls for full-height mining of primary stapes at 20 m strike length.IntroductionThe Namew nickel deposit is located 60 km south of Flin Flon, Manitoba. It is a moderately dipping (45 to 50 degrees) pipe-like ultramafic intrusion with a sulphide halo enrichment. The diluted recoverable ore reserves at January I, 1990 are 2.2 million tonnes grading 2.05% Ni and 0.7% Cu. The operation is a joint venture between Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting (60%) and Outokornpu Mines Ltd. of Toronto (40%). The mine is budgeted to produce 530 000 tonnes in 1990. The deposit was discovered in 1984 and mine development commenced in 1987.In the raise mining area, primary stopes will be filled with a high quality backfill consisting of cement and quarried limestone. Secondary stopes will be mined out between the primaries in the second pass of mining. The design extraction rate is 94% over all.The orebody above 120 level has an average mining width of 2.4 m, so is too narrow for raise mining. A modified form of Avoca stoping is used."

Globalization and the search for new ore deposits inevitably lead to investment in foreign markets. Investors need to be aware of the effect of their venture on regional, social and economic issues when they invest. Decades of detailed statistics from various sources can be integrated and analyzed to predict the social-economic impact of investment, thereby mitigating risk. To this end, the correlation among variables such as foreign direct investment into mining (FDIM), reserves, and socio-economic indexes is examined. The investigation focuses on South America from 1992 to 2000. Throughout the past decade, South America has benefited from capital investment from more developed countries. This huge investment by the mining industry has impacted the South American economies and can be measured directly using the FDIM. Other economic variables investigated include mining gross domestic product, direct employment, and human development indexes. The correlation is based on data compiled from the World Bank, international risk assessment agencies, the United States Geological Survey (USGS), and the information agencies of various South American countries. Initial analysis of the economic data suggests various expected outcomes. For example, foreign investors may disregard a measured, highly negative country risk in deference to the quality of its mineral resources. It is important to note that the standard measures of country risk published by investment analysts are not industry or investor-specific. In the case of the investor, the level of accepted risk is based on their managed investment portfolio. It is noted that arguments for level-playing fields may be the antithesis of globalization. The discovery and exploitation of ore bodies in a globalized environment necessitates the development of economic measures that standardize mining-specific risk variables and trends. The latest published information on the security of mineral investments in South America is investigated by integrating databases of economic, geologic, production, human indexes, and risk ranking.

"In January of 1964, a group known as the Canadian Gold Metallurgists was formed with the backing of the managers of most Canadian gold mining operations. This organization is composed of about thirty mill superintendents of Canadian gold milling operations where the cyanidation process is in use, and one member from the staff of the Mines Branch, Department of Energy, Mines and Re-sources, Ottawa. The aim of this group is to bring together gold mill operators, and research and development people from both industry and government for the purpose of discus-sing common metallurgical problems, and deciding on what operational R and D efforts can be made to help solve these problems. Since the conception of this organization, this approach taken by the gold industry to the study of metallurgical problems has resulted in benefits to all operators, both by assisting them with problems peculiar to their own individual operations and by providing developments of general interest to the industry.This paper describes events leading up to the formation of the Canadian Gold Metallurgists, and how the group has operated since its formation. Examples of progress made toward the group's objectives are given, and possible future programs are discussed."

"A simple method is proposed for determining the long-term deformation behaviour of evaporites. The theory developed can be tested by measuring the change in diameter as a function of time of a vertical mine shaft opposite evaporite strata. Ultimate shaft closures predicted by the theory agree well with those calculated with the very much more complex theory of Serata (1968), provided that sufficiently high octahedral shear strengths are used in the former.An analysis of measurements made in an isolated opening in a Saskatchewan potash mine shows that the octahedral shear strength of the surrounding potash and halite was approximately 500 psi several years after the opening was mined. This value is less than that deter-mined experimentally for halite by Serata. The same data indicate, furthermore, that the in-situ octahedral shear strength is decreasing slowly with time.The current controversy regarding the actual deformation of evaporites will only be resolved by the cooperation of potash producing companies in releasing data on the long-term deformation of their mine shafts."

The decommissioning of uranium tailings facilities often requires the design of a suitable cover system. In northern climatic environments there is a portion each year that can be considered to be ?inactive? while the remainder of the year can be considered to be ?active?. There are numerous engineering design assumptions required when analyzing both the ?active? and the ?inactive? portions of the year. Cover systems are subjected to complex boundary conditions and nonlinear unsaturated soil properties. The proposed paper describes the steps necessary for the preparation and the analysis of a multi-year climatic database for the design of a cover system in northern environments. The paper also explains how climate can be classified and how observed variations from one year to the next can be taken into consideration in cover design. The results of climatic records at two different sites are used to illustrate conditions that need to be taken into consideration when designing soil cover systems.

"Precious metals such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium are commonly used for automotive catalyst converters. To recover these metals with lower environmental load and cost, exposure to zinc vapor was proposed as a pretreatment prior to acid leaching. Alloying with zinc is expected to enhance dissolution of precious metals and reduce the amount of toxic chemical agents required for the leaching. This study examined the effect of the alloying pretreatment using model catalysts. Catalysts were immersed in leaching solutions for a predefined time with or without zinc vapor pretreatment, and the amount of dissolved metals was then evaluated. INTRODUCTIONAutomotive catalysts account for large portions of the world consumption of platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), and rhodium (Rh) (Butler, J., 2011). Because of their limited production and high prices, recovery of the precious metals from spent catalysts is obviously an important issue. A representative structure of an automotive catalytic converter can be described as a monolithic ceramic support with a honeycomb structure which is coated with porous oxides such as those of aluminum (Al2O3), cerium (CeO2), and zirconium (ZrO2) (Heck & Farrauto, 2001; Matsumoto & Shinjoh, 2007). Small particles of precious metals, originally several nanometers or less, adhere to the oxides.Typical recovery processes for precious metals from scraps are shown in Figure 1 (a)-(c) (Habashi, 1997; Yoo, 1998; Shibata & Okuda, 2002). Precious metals can be recovered by using non-ferrous smelters as Figure 1 (a) shows. Smelted along with metals such as copper (Cu), precious metals and ceramics in the scraps are absorbed into the metal phase and slag phase, respectively. Because the metals separate from Cu as anode slime in successive electro-refining, such a process can recover precious metals as co-products of Cu. However, in order to prevent negative effects on the principal process, a specialized procedure is needed. Figure 1 (b) is a specialized approach in which scraps are melted at elevated temperature with Cu called the Rose process. Here Cu works as a collector metal, and the absorbed precious metals are then concentrated by oxidation of Cu. Such a process can separate precious metals from ceramics constituting catalyst converters. Smelting at high temperature, however, requires extensive equipment as well as a high amount of energy. On the other hand, hydrometallurgical processes may be effective to separate precious metals from ceramics into an aqueous solution, because chemical agents can act on these metals selectively (Figure 1 (c)). Leaching of precious metals, however, requires strong acid and oxidizing agents because of their corrosion resistance; this makes liquid waste disposal and the large environmental load controversial. To solve the problem, a metal vapor pretreatment was proposed (Okabe, Yamamoto, Kayanuma, & Maeda, 2003a, 2003b; Kayanuma, Okabe, Mitsuda, & Maeda., 2004; Kayanuma, Okabe, & Maeda, 2004; Itoh, Kayanuma, Miyake, Kimura, & Maeda, 2005). A flow diagram of the process using zinc (Zn) vapor is shown by Fig. 1(d). Exposed to Zn vapor, precious metals are expected to form alloys which dissolve more easily than pure precious metals, thus reducing the use of chemical agents and environmental load involved with successive leaching. In previous research (Sasaki, Miyaki, & Maeda, 2010; Sasaki & Maeda, 2010, 2012), dissolutions of precious metal alloys formed by Zn vapor treatment were examined in hydrochloric acid (HCl) using an electrochemical method, and it was confirmed that these metals dissolved at higher rates from the alloys than from their pure states (Figure 2). In this study, the availability of the alloying pretreatment was demonstrated by testing on model catalysts in leaching solutions."

"IT IS KNOWN that some ores of sulphide type, such as pyrite, chalcopyrite, and bornite have an electrical conductivity comparable to that of metals, and accordingly much higher than the conductivity of any unmineralized rock. This physical property has long been used for the detection of orebodies of this kind by means of electrical measurements made at the surface of the ground.The present paper will deal with a new electromagnetic instrument for the investigation of subsurface conductors, which has been recently introduced into field practice and has already led to successful results in Canada.The principle of the instrument will be described. How it operates, and how the observations made can be interpreted will be explained. The guidelines are applicable to public companies and their consultants reporting diamond exploration results.“The guidelines are referenced in the Companion Policy of NI 43-101 with a statement that disclosure regarding the reporting of diamond exploration sampling results should conform to them.”Reporting GuidelinesThe following guidelines have been recommended by the Diamond Exploration Best Practices Committee established by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum. These guidelines are applicable to public companies and their consultants reporting diamond exploration results.In respect of these guidelines, Diamond Exploration Results are results derived from the initial activities undertaken to investigate a diamond bearing prospect or deposit, to generate tonnage, grade and value estimates that cannot be classified as a Mineral Resource or Mineral Reserve. "A method and device are described for sampling diamond-drill core by cutting a continuous fillet of constant cross section from the cylindrical surface of the core throughout appropriate sample lengths. The apparatus employs a tapered, abrasive-set, cutting wheel, the conical cutting surface of which projects slightly into a rectangular core-guiding trough set parallel to the axis of rotation. The depth of fillet and thus the amount of sample per unit length can be regulated by adjusting the core guides. The freshly cut fillet itself, by engaging in a guide beyond the cutting wheel, acts to prevent rotation of the core during operation of the device.The cuttings which form the sample are normally collected in a tray below the cutting-wheel and appear at about 80 per cent -100 mesh. They require little or no further treatment or comminution before analysis. "The development of two large, high-grade uranium projects has been proposed for northern Saskatchewan. The projects are now under review by a joint federal/provincial panel. The McArthur River project is owned by the McArthur River joint venture (Cameco Corporation 53.991 %, Uranerz Exploration and Mining Limited 29.775%, Cogema Resources Inc. 16.234%) and operated by Cameco. Cameco proposes to mill the McArthur River ore at the existing Key Lake mill. The Cigar Lake project is owned by the Cigar Lake joint venture (Cameco Corporation 48.75%, Cogema Resources Inc. 36.375%, Idemitsu Uranium Exploration Canada Ltd. 12.875%, Korea Electric Power Corporation 2.000%). The Cigar Lake joint venture proposes that Cameco operate the Cigar Lake mine for the owners, and that Cogema mill the ore at their McClean Lake mill, now under construction. Proposed systems provide safe mining and ore handling, and allow the milling of McArthur River ore at Key Lake and Cigar Lake ore at McClean Lake. This avoids the disturbance of new sites for milling and tailings disposal.The McArthur River and Cigar Lake deposits are the largest known high-grade uranium deposits in the world. The ore grades at McArthur River and Cigar Lake are at least 100 times those that are mined elsewhere. It is proposed to mine these deposits using remote underground mining methods, to crush and grind the ore underground, to pump a thickened ore slurry to surface, and to transport it in special containers by truck to the mills.During all mining and processing stages the ore is fully contained. Radon emission is controlled by positive ventilation of all process vessels, with the process ventilation backed up by the primary mine ventilation system. Radiation is controlled by heavy steel pipe and vessel walls, concrete walls and sometimes lead sheeting."

"Risks from political instability and government policies restricting equity ownership, local operations and transfers of payments affect the profitability of foreign mining ventures. More than seat-of-the-pants judgments and old-boy networks are required to anticipate these risks and to take actions appropriate to offsetting them. A system for making political forecasts, called the Prince System, and a series of charts relaying risk s to a production of key minerals will be presented.IntroductionFirm s with extractive operations outside their home country do not have to be told that political stability and government decisions play a big role in the success o f their operations. The takeover of copper firm s in Chile during the Allende administration in 1971 and the recent decision by Venezuela to reduce Reynolds Metals equity share in a smelting operation from 50% to 28% are two examples of hundreds of events that have determined the profitability of extractive operations over the past decade. Both risks and opportunities for international firms seeking to produce and market raw materials are heavily affected by political conditions. While news of political events travel much faster than in the past and host governments are more clever in shaping the risks as well as the opportunities, politics has always been part of the mining business.What has changed is the need to be more systematic in approaching the assessment of political conditions and how it affects business. The increasing costs of extractive operations, the need for long-range planning, the importance of financial arrangements and the world-wide scope of man y firm s' activities require that the assessment be updated continuously and be comparable across different countries and different types of investments. Political risk analysis, the assessment o f macro-political changes and specific governmental decision s on the operations of extractive industries needs to become as systematic and integrated into corporate decision -making as economic analysis has become over the past two decade s."

Hydrometallurgical processes for treating copper sulfide concentrates have attracted considerable attention over thirty years and many processes have been developed. However there have been still problems in those processes because of difficulties of iron removal and high purity copper production with low operating cost. Although SX-EW is highly cost effective method, it is difficult to process the chalcopyrite. Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. (SMM) conducted a review of hydrometallurgical copper concentrate processing and has successfully developed a novel process for the hydrometallurgical production of copper from copper concentrate. In this process, copper sulfide is leached by chlorine gas under atmospheric pressure. Most of hydro metallurgical processes can leach only some of chalcopyrite under atmospheric pressure then they need high pressure leaching facility like autoclave. In this process, copper in chalcopyrite can be leached completely by controlling oxidation reduction potential and chloride ion concentration. Cu(I) ion in leached liquor is separated from Fe(I!) ion by SX using TBP then pure copper powder is produced by electrowinning.
