The portion of the earth's surface covered by peatlands has been conservatively estimated at over 420 million ha (Kivinen and Pakarinen 1980). It is estimated that there are about 170 million ha of peatland in Canada. New Brunswick contains about 140,000 ha. Harvesting of peat for horticultural purposes has been carried out in New Brunsiwck since 1942. This industry, and the potential for using peat for energy purposes, indicated the need for an accurate assessment of the resource. In 1975, therefore, the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources began a detailed peatland inventory. Assistance from the Canada Department of Regional Economic Expansion permitted acceleration of this program and field work was completed in 1982. Information gathered by the program will form the basis for a management plan for future use of the resource.

Even though many approaches have been proposed for automated fault detection and diagnosis of Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, and advanced maintenance programs, such as preventive and predictive maintenance have been applied for the systems, issuing work orders for corrective maintenance is still a reality. Currently corrective maintenance still accounts for more than 55% of all maintenance programs in average facilities in the US (DoE, 2010). Indoor air related problems are especially important among corrective maintenance work orders. This paper provides details of a case study conducted to capture the workflow that HVAC mechanics follow, their rationale in diagnosis process and the information they typically refer to while responding to indoor air related corrective maintenance work orders. The general workflow for HVAC mechanics to complete such types of work orders was summarized into 5 stages, and generic information requirements recorded from the case study were synthesized. Initial findings show two main challenges in the industry for HVAC mechanics to get access to required information, which highlights the need for a systematic approach that would enable identification of such information applicable to a given context under which a work order has been generated and provide values of required information for HVAC mechanics to do sound diagnosis through integrated data repositories.

The paper will outline historically the different materials used for pouring sockets and illustrate the current trend due to inherent advantages. A section will be devoted to engineering stress analysis showing the criteria necessary for the wires not to slip inside the poured socket material. The Ontario Mining Regulations pertaining to poured sockets will be reviewed with emphasis on the acceptable type of sockets depending on usage. In addition the paper will review the proper socket preparation techniques and explain the destructive testing conducted at the Materials Testing Lab essential for the certification requirements. In conclusion the paper will show the importance of the Certification Program for the safety of Miners working in Ontario, Canada and the World. The paper is also intended to inform the Mine Operators and Consultants that to-date the .Wirelock. sockets have been used safely for hoist ropes of locked coil and non-rotating construction and for the termination of balance ropes, and that further research is required on the construction of a socket approved for rotating type mine hoist ropes.

"Income based taxes are significant cost elements to be considered in evaluating investment in new mine development. This paper presents the results of comparative analysis of effective income-based tax rates for mining in the Northwest Territories (NWT), selected Canadian provinces and international jurisdictions. The study was done as background to a review of royalty regulations for the NWT. ObjectiveThis paper presents results of comparative analysis of effective mining royalty1 rates, and combined effective mining royalty and income tax rates on selected mine models for the Northwest Territories (NWT), with those for several other jurisdictions in Canada and abroad which compete with the NWT for mining investment.BackgroundThe February 27, 1995 federal budget directed the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development (DIAND) to proceed with a comprehensive review and amendments to northern natural resource management legislation in order “to increase revenues and ensure a fair return to the Crown.” DIAND is responsible for the administration of the Territorial Lands Act, and its regulations.The Territorial Lands Act gives the Governor-in-Council the authority to “… make regulations for the leasing of mining rights in, under or on territorial lands and the payment of royalties therefor,…”. In the NWT, the Canada Mining Regulations (CMR) provide for the disposition of mineral rights for most minerals, other than coal, petroleum and related hydrocarbons, in return for the payment of a royalty to the Crown.As part of this review of the NWT mining royalty regime, several computer mine models were developed and tax regimes in a number of jurisdictions were analyzed. Effective mining royalty rates, and the combined effective mining royalty and income tax rates were compared across the jurisdictions. The results presented in this paper are a part of the background work done in preparing a discussion paper on proposed changes to the NWT mining royalty that is expected to be released for public consultation in the very near future."

"As real estate for new development in urban settings becomes scarce, commercial high rises are being constructed above open passenger rail tracks and vehicular roadways. Rail and roadway overbuilds are treated as tunnels requiring emergency ventilation systems for train or automobile and truck fires. The value of floor space in residential and office towers poses challenges to engineers responsible for designing fan rooms and shafts for tunnel ventilation systems within the towers. This paper describes a case study of the unique incorporation of tunnel ventilation fan plants in the overbuild structure of a passenger railyard and an adjacent roadway.INTRODUCTIONTunnel ventilation systems are required for passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels by the NFPA 130 Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit and Passenger Rail Systems, and the NFPA 502 Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways requires tunnel ventilation systems for vehicular (road) tunnels. Passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels are typically ventilated with a series of shafts placed longitudinally along the tunnels to provide piston relief for normal train operations and emergency ventilation of train fires utilizing reversible axial flow fans. The shafts are incorporated in dedicated ventilation buildings that house the tunnel ventilation fans and starters, switchgear to power the fans and other equipment and systems in the building, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to control fan operation with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software, and HVAC fans and ductwork to ventilate the spaces in the building. These ventilation buildings may also provide access to the tunnels below with ingress/egress stairs for use by first responders and firefighters entering the tunnels and train or transit system passengers exiting the tunnels in an emergency. Roasting of molybdenite concentrate is an important stage in the production of commercial molybdenum trioxide. The oxidation kinetic and mechanism of molybdenum sulfide concentrates from two plants were investigated at temperatures from 444 °C to 640°C. The rate of reaction was determined for thin layer samples in a muffle furnace at controlled temperatures, oxygen excess and removal of sulfur dioxide. For both concentrates the rate of reaction is fairly slow at temperatures below 500°C and remains fairly constant from 540 to 600 °C. It was observed that the concentrate from the first plant presents a tendency for sintering or glazing at temperatures above 620°C, whereas the same phenomena was observed at 20 or 30 °C higher temperature for the second concentrate. A kinetic model of two reactions, involving the formation of Mo02 as intermediate oxide for the production of Mo03 is proposed and activation energies of 23.0 and 20.8 kJ/mol for the first and second reaction were calculated for temperatures between 520 °C to 600 °C. These low values of activation energies indicate that the overall rate of oxidation is controlled by mass transfer, particularly in a porous layer of oxides. Therefore, the renewal of the surface by mixing and motion of the concentrate layer is of great importance. Sublimation of Mo03 becomes significant for temperatures above 650 °C.

Rehabilitation of mined out areas is often enforced by environmental bonding. It is usually assumed that this process provides financial assurance that rehabilitation will be carried out as agreed at the permitting stage. Shortcomings of the current practice in environmental bonding for mining are reviewed. Of particular importance for the public, for governments and for the environment is the absence of protection against cost overruns and companies defaulting before the bond amount is entirely paid. Elements of solution are identified through the emergence of environmental insurance as a complement to bonding for cost overruns and defaults. A cover of environmental catastrophes could also be added, hence reducing the risk for the public and the environment. We examine the merit of creating a captive insurance company under the responsibility of the mining industry. The use of insurance techniques would incorporate a genuine risk management dimension to the financing of rehabilitation.

The scheduling of underground mining activities is a complex task, in particular because of the requirement to satisfy a large number of constraints. A Schedule Optimization Tool (SOT) for underground mine planning is described, and its use for investigating strategic decisions is illustrated by means of a case study. The main components of SOT include: a genetic algorithm, which searches for optimal schedules; guidance, the application of heuristic rules to guide the genetic algorithm; and sliding, which implements just-in-time development. For the case study, SOT is employed to generate schedules at various ore capacities, accounting for the appropriate financials in each schedule evaluation. The case study finds that preliminary scheduling performed before invoking SOT, intended to provide a good starting point for the search, does not ultimately lead to higher value schedules. Two key uses for SOT are identified. A mine planner can save time by using SOT to produce high-value scheduling alternatives. This process ensures a broader investigation of the value that the deposit can yield. Also, SOT can be used to validate strategic and tactical decisions, by scheduling under alternative scenarios. Both uses produce high value schedules conforming to all imposed resource constraints.

During this period, the search for .and development of iron ore deposits in Canada bas proven eminently successful and there is every indication that exploration will continue to be active for many years.This paper has been prepared primarily for the information of those who have bad little or no experience in iron ore exploration. For convenience, it is divided into three parts: ( 1) a brief discussion of the marketing of iron ores, with special reference to Canadian production; (2) a summary of the main features to be considered when prospecting for or evaluating a potential iron ore deposit; and (3) an outline of the methods and procedures used in the search for the direct-shipping iron ores in the Quebec•-Labrador iron ore field.The Iron Ore MarketDue to the tremendous tonnages of high-grade direct-shipping iron ore indicated in the iron ore fields of the Quebec-Labrador and Steep •Rock areas, it might be assumed that there would have been a sharp decline in iron ore prospecting in this country. On the contrary, the development of these two major fields, which must be classed among the world's greatest, has been responsible for much of the current activity. The search for high and medium grade magnetite deposits is being• conducted in many parts of the country and a number of these have reached the development stage. Production is being expanded from the known fields, such as Wabana in Newfoundland and Michipicoten in Ontario."

JX Nippon Mining and Metals Corporation has developed the JX Iodine Process, which is an innovative and patented copper-leaching process for low-grade primary sulfide ores. This process consists of the irrigation of ferric iron and a low concentration of iodide solutions. One-meter column leaching tests were conducted on ore samples from two different mines. At the end of experiments, the total copper recovery exceeded 70% for Sample A and 50% for Sample B with the iodine method, which was significantly higher than that with conventional ferric leaching of 14% for Sample A and 20% for Sample B. To elucidate the reason for the JX Iodine Process effectiveness, cross sections of leached residues were studied. Reaction products were confirmed around chalcopyrite even in the central area of particles in Sample A, however, reaction products were recognized at a depth of only 1 mm from the ore rim in Sample The resistance of Sample A to the leachate appeared to be lower than that of Sample B because Sample A had a high permeability and porosity, whereas Sample B had been affected strongly by a potassium alteration. No reaction products were visible on conventional leaching samples, even at the ore surfaces. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical copper leaching (heap leaching or dump leaching) has been used extensively for copper recovery from oxide and secondary-sulfide ores, but not for primary copper sulfides, which contain mainly chalcopyrite as copper minerals. Although they are major resources of copper, primary copper sulfides are difficult to process because of their refractory nature. Extensive leaching studies have been carried out to leach primary copper sulfides (chalcopyrite), including biological and chemical, using a variety of oxidants and additives to enhance copper recovery. Watling (2013) reviewed acid-chloride-oxidizing agents with chalcopyrite. Abdollahi et al. (2015) tested silver as a catalyst for bioleaching with a chalcopyrite-bearing molybdenite concentrate. Hiroyoshi, Miki, Hirajima and Tsunekawa (2000) found a specific redox-potential zone for high-speed chalcopyrite leaching by controlling the ratio of ferric and ferrous iron. However, no ambient-temperature economic process has been developed for leaching primary copper sulfide, which usually has a low copper grade.

"A Jet Diffuser Flotation Column (JDFC) is a newcomer flotation device whose operation principles similar with Jameson cell but it has an essential change in downcomer. By taking into account the hydrodynamic and fluid mechanic principles (Sahbaz et al. 2013) downcomer was changed as a diffuser, therefore turbulence at the end of the downcomer was reduced to provide better aggregate stability and homogenous dissipation of the bubbles in the separation tank. Thus the performance increase has been aimed for the coarse particles.According to theoretical results, obtained by the formula of Oteyaka (1993) showing the relationship between velocity gradient and maximum floatable size for the various contact angles, the d50 of quartz flotation of JFDC is about 240 µm and 310 µm for the contact angle of 50° and 60°, respectively. This result was verified by the experiments. According to the experimental results; d50 which was accepted the maximum floatable particle size of quartz flotation of JFDC was about 256 µm and 300 µm for the contact angle of 50° and 60°, respectively.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is a kinetic process used for separation of hydrophobic particles from hydrophilic particles. There are many different parameters affects the success of the flotation and particle size is one of them. While the flotation is very efficient for intermediate size, the efficiency of the process starts to decrease for both fine and coarse sizes (Trahar, 1981; Muganda et al., 2011). Therefore; researchers have tried to find a solution for the efficiency decrease in fine and coarse sizes by modifying the chemical condition and designing the new devices. For example, Jameson cell is a unique device for the fine particle flotation due to the suitable design and fine bubble producing (Jameson, 1988; Evans et al., 1995; Sahbaz, 2010). Because of this success operation the Jameson cell is applied more than 200 flotation plants in worldwide. On the contrary, the efficiency of the cell decreases for coarse particle flotation due to the turbulence occurred in the separation tank (Sahbaz, 2010; Cowburn et al., 2007). That’s why, new flotation device was designed in loboratory scale by Sahbaz, Oteyaka and Ucar in 2010s and it has been called as Jet Diffuser Flotation Column (JDFC) recently."

The dissolution of chalcopyrite has received a significant amount of attention. The predominant paradigm of investigation is that its rate of dissolution is limited or passivated by a surface coating or film of material. The common candidates for such a passivating coating are numerous: polysulfide coating, metal deficient layers, copper sulfide coating, bornite layers, jarosite precipitates, and elemental sulfur films. While this line of explanation, that is, the explanation based on passivation, seems to have won some form of consensus with researchers, there is another explanation for the results that can account for all the results observed. Crundwell (1988) proposed that the solid state properties of chalcopyrite, in particular, the semiconducting properties, are responsible for the observed behaviour of chalcopyrite. The purpose of this paper is to outline the semiconductor mechanism of dissolution, and to show how this mechanism accounts for all the observed phenomena recently reported in the literature. CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamic) models have been developed and validated for a pulsed column with disk-doughnut internals, as used for solvent extraction. First a single phase model was developed to simulate the turbulent oscillating flow around the internals of the column. This model was successfully validated using detailed PIV measurements of velocity taken at eight different phases through the pulse cycle. Second, the CFD model was extended to allow for a continuous aqueous phase and a dispersed organic phase (kerosene) flowing counter-currently. The model was a two-fluid model that accounts for droplet breakup and coalescence, and solves for droplet size distribution using a population balance model incorporated into the CFX4 package. PDIA (Particle Droplet Image Analysis) measurements were taken on a pilot scale solvent extraction pulsed column to determine droplet size distribution for calibration and validation of the CFD model. The measurements were made under pulsing intensities ranging from 10 mm/s to 32.5 mm/s.

The process of estimating tailings deposition for a given basin is a relatively tedious process without dedicated software tools. The amount of time required to generate a tailings surface for a given set of conditions tends to limit the number of design alternatives that can be considered for a particular project. Recent innovations in the Surpac Vision mining software include the widely used scripting language TCL (Tool Command Language) that brings with it the ability for non-programmers to extend the software functionality beyond mining applications alone. A software tool was developed using the Surpac Vision scripting language to take advantage of 3D visualization and create a flexible tailings modeling solution. The result is an application that removes much of the drafting overhead required to produce a tailings surface. It provides the means for reviewing alternatives and performing sensitivity analysis with variables such as pond elevation, dam or spigot location and height without a significant increase in overall time for a project.

"Hydrocyclone modelling and selection procedure is illustrated. Computerized procedure for hydrocyclone cut size determination for grinding and non-grinding applications is described.A standard procedure for evaluating operating hydrocyclones is described in detail. Many case studies are illustrated comparing actual plant performance with the computer simulation output in terms of overflow product size distributions.INTRODUCTION Cyclones are widely used for applications such as: close circuit grinding, backfill, tailings and dewatering. Normally, cyclones are used for very fine separations where screens are not suitable or too expensive. Figure 1 shows the separation size range of various classifying devices. Cyclones are popular because of their low capital and operating cost. Cyclone selection procedure for different applications depends on the amount of information available on the cyclone feed slurry characteristics. Closed circuit grinding applications will be discussed in detail in this paper. The Cut Size:The size of the material in the feed which reports 50% to each product stream (i.e. underflow and overflow), after correcting for the feed solids by-passing with the underflow liquid, is termed the cut size or ""d50c"". This is often used as the criterion and the basis for cyclone design.When the corrected recovery to underflow of each mesh size in the feed is plotted against the geometric mean size in microns on a log scale, the micron size corresponding to 50% recovery is the d50c size."

BHP Billiton?s Cannington facility is a mining and minerals processing plant near Mt. Isa in Central Queensland, Australia, producing silver, lead and zinc. Mine ore is processed in a concentrator, which consists of grinding, flotation, thickening and filtration. Grinding is carried out in a fully autogenous (AG) mill. The mill operates in closed circuit with a pebble crusher. Throughput is approximately 380 tph. Cyclone overflow from the grinding circuit is fed into a flotation circuit for the recovery of lead, zinc and silver. Two concentrates are produced (lead and zinc), which are then thickened and filtered. The filtered concentrate is transported by road to a rail receiving station. From here the concentrate is railed to port in Townsville for shipment to the smelter. Matrikon and Engineers at BHP Billiton?s Cannington Mine have used ProcessACT to develop a flexible, nonlinear dynamic simulator for the grinding circuit to further enhance process understanding, as well to investigate various optimization strategies. An online charge volume estimator was also developed for the AG mill to aid in the understanding of overload conditions, which for the previous two months had been the primary contributor to downtime. The models were developed using a combination of first-principles modeling along with input-output dynamic responses. Examples of models used include: Morrell ?C? model for power and charge shoulder/toe angle prediction; Whiten?s mixing model for breakage and hold-up; Nageswararao cyclone model for predicting cut size; slurry recovery and water recovery. The composite model simulates system dynamics starting from the stockpile reclaim system and finishing at the feed for the flotation process. The objective was to provide a tool that assisted Cannington in understanding their Grinding Circuit and allowed them to develop and evaluate circuit optimization strategies. BHP Billiton Cannington Mine is now considering development of a Grinding Circuit Optimizer utilizing the models developed for the simulator.

"The estimation of recoverable ore reserves for feasibility in precious metal deposits such as Pine Creek must account not only f or the extreme variability of the ore grade but also for the complexity of the geology. Compatible models f or both must be adopted. Further, very selective mining demands reserve estimates be based on small selection units whose individual grades cannot be estimated reliably from the exploration drilling data.Multigaussian kriging is one method based on a multivariate normal model for estimating recoverable reserves under such conditions. In this paper, a non-mathematical description of the multigaussian model is presented together with its application to the Pine Creek Gold Deposit. The results, when compared to the first year of production, are encouraging for the model but not without surprises.Together, Part 1 and Part 2 of this study combine a detailed and geologically conditioned variogram analysis with an appropriate estimation method for a highly variable low-grade gold deposit. This and other studies of gold deposits familiar to the author show convincingly both that while the appropriate geostatistical skills and techniques are necessary to tackle the question of reserves, equally important but often discounted is the need for an appropriate and compatible geological model. IntroductionThe Pine Creek gold mineralization is associated with saddle reefs, and quartz and quartz- sulphide veining within the Enterprise Anti cline. The anticlinal structure is complex and, prior to mining, the mineralization was considered to be mainly strata controlled. Grades vary up to 160 grams in l .5rn core samples with coefficients of variation in excess of three.The estimation of the recoverable reserves for such a depo sit must account for both the geological complexity and the extreme variability of the gold grade.Part 1 of this work presented the geological model for the deposit and summary statistics 0 f the gold data. A detailed structural and variogram analysis considered both gold grades and the normal score (or gaussian transform) of these gold grades for different composite sizes."
