"Aur Resources Inc. is the operator of the Louvicourt Mine located 40 km east of Val d'Or. Quebec. Les Entreprises Minieres Redpath Limitée a member of the 1.S. Redpath Group of companies was contracted to construct two vertical mine shaft collars in deep overburden.During the spring of1991 two vertical shaft collars were established in wet, running sand that was in excess of20 m deep. This paper will illustrate the engineering and construction techniques used in establishing these collars and the methods used to overcome the various obstacles that occurred during construction.IntroductionThe Louvicourt copper/zinc/gold/silver deposit is located 40 km east of Val d'Or, Quebec, is adjacent to the former Louvern Mine which operated at depths of 40 m to 850 m below surface (Fig. 1). This deposit was discovered in mid-1989 as the result of systematic exploration and diamond drilling based on a geological model. The Louvicourt project is operated by Aur Resources Inc.The property is being developed to produce 4000 tid with an anticipated life of just over 17 years. Mill start up is scheduled for July 1. 1994, commercial production October I, 1994, and full production by late 1995. The current production plan provides for 24 040 (XX) t averaging 3.89% copper, 1.95070 zinc, 0.039 oz gold per tonne and 0.99 oz silver per tonne, to be mined."

"Finance Minister Paul Martin's first budget disappointed almost everyone. The business sector was disappointed at the some what feeble attempt to grapple with the country's deficit. The mining industry was disappointed by tax proposals regarding mine reclamation that fall short of the industry's needs. Has anybody been happy with a federal budget? Federal Budget DisappointsThe federal government's budget papers that were tabled on February 22, 1994, contained a rather bizarre mixture of unrelated tax proposals. The budget signals an unexpected attack on the tax treatment of debt settlements, on certain types of corporate reorgani2ations, and on income earned by foreign affiliates. This is an old style budget, which proposes a pot pourri of technical changes and policy initiatives. Mine ReclamationEffective February 23, 1994, a taxpayer's contributions to a prescribed mine reclamation trust fund will be deductible as a current expense. The budget papers do not provide a definition of what will constitute a ""prescribed"" trust: this definition will surface in due course. However, the budget papers indicate that:• income earned in such trusts will be subject to tax each year;• all withdrawals from the trust (including income already taxed) will be included in computing the income for tax purposes of the recipient;• reclamation costs will continue to be fully deductible at the time incurred; and • contributions, trust earnings, and withdrawals will not be taken into account for the purposes of determining a taxpayer's resource allowance."

"Experimental and pilot operations in bituminous sand processing require due care and attention in the design and analysis of measurement programs. This paper deals with a case study in experimental design and data analysis for a series of experimental campaigns that have been conducted over the past five years by Kilborn Western Inc., acting on behalf of Bitmin Resources. Beginning with the design of the experiment and following into the use of linear and nonlinear regression models, the phenomenology of bitumen extraction is illustrated. The final testing program tested 13 oil sand types as well as a wide range of process variables for all the unit operations of the complete process.The program was successful in developing process fundamentals and scale-up criteria. Several phenomenological models were proposed and tested. Their range of applicability was explored. This paper illustrates the range of applicability of these models and discusses the development of alternative models.IntroductionOver the past five years Kilborn has conducted a series of bench scale and pilot scale experiments designed to explore the phenomenolgy of a new concept in medium temperature processing of bituminous ores. These experiments at feed rates ranging from .1 to 24 t/h were conducted on water wet sands from the .Athabasca region near Fort McMurray. They were based on experimental designs chosen to provide a systematic means of identifying the response surfaces of the process over a range of conceptual designs. "The DENVER Tube Press is a simple, high pressure (1500 PSI (100 bar)) filtration unit, developed for processing difficult-to-dewater materials and to produce a handleable filter cake and clear filtrate product.Lab and Pilot testwork conducted in Australia on coal fines (55-70% -35 micron (400 mesh)) have shown that total moisture contents of less than 20% are consistently achieved in the final cake products from the Tube Press.currently, these coal super fines are sent to waste due to uneconomical mechanical dewatering methods, which were only able to reduce total moisture levels in excess of 30%. Calculated, throughput rates for the 500 series Tube Press exceeded 1700 kg/hr (3750 lbs/hr). Feed solids concentration requirements are between 45 and 50% to achieve these results.INTRODUCTIONThe DENVER Tube Press is an automatic membrane high pressure filter press, which operates at hydraulic water pressures up to 1500 PSI (100 bar). The Tube Press was developed in the late 1960's by Charlestown Engineering, st. Austell, Cornwall, England, formerly a division of English China Clays, Ltd., to address more effective methods of moisture reduction of micron-size china clays. The Tube Press reduced moisture sufficiently to produce a hard surface-dry, handleable cake and clear filtrate discharge, which was recycled into the process. This development work was conducted using a 200 Series Tube Press (200 mm diameter x 2500 mm long filter surface)."

"A number of studies have identified the presence of heavy minerals in the Athabasca oil sands. A 1996 Mineral Development Agreement study into the recovery of Co-Products identified low operating costs, a simple flowsheet and access to market as key drivers in advancing interest in a viable project.Commercial bitumen extraction processes recover 50% of the titanium heavy minerals and 85% of the zircon into froth containing 1 % of the feed solids. Froth treatment tailings grade is 11.5% Ti02 and 3.6% Zr02.Processing this high grade feed in a combination of flotation, roasting, screening, gravity concentration and magnetic separation, results in concentrates of rutile, leucoxene, ilmenite, zircon and rare earths of marketable quality.A combination of high grade feed and a simple process lead to operating costs among the lowest in the industry. Low cost heavy minerals and low energy costs indicate an intriguing potential for low cost pigment production in Alberta. The production of heavy minerals from oil sands remains one of the largest untapped resources in the Province of Alberta1.0 IntroductionThis paper describes the results of an investigation into the recovery of heavy minerals from tailings produced by the major oil sands plants. The study was carried out under a Canada-Alberta Mineral Development Agreement (Alberta Chamber of Resources 1996). In the present study we focuses on developing the poroelasticity model that deals with adsorptioninduced permeability change mostly occurred in porous media constituted several phases such as coal. The underlying pressure induced by adsorption is obtained by Virial expansion form, which is substantially founded on statistical physics. The corresponding thermodynamic pressure applying on the pore surface is then used to detail the pore pressure and further to evaluate the macroscopic volumetric strain and the porosity. In the process of physical adsorption, the adsorbed phase is in thermodynamic equilibrium with the gas phase regardless of pore size, and the corresponding chemical potentials are all equal. The relationship between surface strain and volumetric strain is derived under infinitesimal deformation conditions to gain an explicit formulation of pore surface area with respect to volumetric strain and porosity. After the formulation of surface stress modified by the Langmuir isothermal adsorption is derived, the differential micromechanical constitutive equations of porous media are obtained. By supposing that the ratio of current permeability to initial is equal to the cubic ratio of current porosity to initial porosity, the differential equations for permeability change is consequently derived. The numerical simulations by the present model for permeability change of coal induced by adsorption of CO2 and CH4, respectively, are presented under confined stress conditions. The predictions from the model are good in agreement with the experimental data of sorption-induced permeability change of coals in the literature.

In recent years, the secure supply of critical and technology metals has become increasingly important tomajor industrialized economies that seek to sustain their industrial base and develop advanced technologies, such as clean energy. Canada, with its significant reserves of rare earth element (REE) and other metals, has an opportunity to supply some of the global demand for these materials. However, to transition from promising mineral deposits to marketable products, investment in strategic research and development (R&D) and expertise is needed to address the complex technological challenges around the production, separation and processing of these metals, and to better understand the global market for these key commodities. To this end, in its April 2015 budget, the Government of Canada committed to invest $23M over 5 years to accelerate production of REE and chromite/ferrochrome. The goal of this program, developed in close association with industry, is that Canada contributes a sustainable supply of REE to the global market. The research and development program will provide the technological capacity to establish a Canadian REE industry. This paper will discuss REE R&D advances achieved in the first year of the program in areas of mineral characterization, beneficiation, leaching, separation and environmental management and will highlight the Canadian model of collaboration where industry (e.g. prospective producers, technology companies), government, academia and other stakeholders work closely to ensure that the R&D is targeted, innovative and effectively deployed and commercialized.

Numerous research studies have shown that clay rock formations exhibit favourable characteristics for the deep geological disposal of radioactive waste. However, one main concern is that the favourable long-term isolation properties of the intact rock mass could be negatively affected by the formation of an excavation damaged zone (EDZ) around the underground openings. The goal of this paper is to present new rock mechanics insights into the phenomena involved in the EDZ formation and evolution processes in Opalinus Clay, a clay shale currently being assessed as a potential host rock for an underground repository in Northern Switzerland. More specifically, discontinuum-based computer simulations, using a hybrid finite-discrete element method (FDEM) approach, were applied to two case studies considering circular excavations in an anisotropic Opalinus Clay formation. In the first case study, numerical modelling was applied to the HG-A experiment, a long-term in-situ test carried out at the Mont Terri underground rock laboratory to investigate the hydro-mechanical response of a backfilled and sealed microtunnel. A mechanistic analysis of the fracturing processes involved in the EDZ formation was carried out. In the second case study, the long-term effect of the bentonite backfill swelling on the EDZ around an emplacement was numerically analyzed. Overall, the simulation results highlight short-term distinctive rock failure kinematics due to the bedded rock structure, as well as a long-term reduction of the excavation-induced fracture porosity in response to mechanical loading.

"Abstract-The schist-, sediment-, and intrusion-hosted Tertiary Au-Ag hydrothermal deposits of the northern Black Hills, South Dakota are localized and controlled by various types of fractures. This study is an attempt to distinguish between and discuss the possible causes of these fractures in three mines: Richmond Hill, Annie Creek - Foley Ridge (ACFR), and Gilt Edge.Five models based on the structural and tectonic settings of the northern Black Hills are proposed for the fracture origin. In Richmond Hill mine, mineralized fractures within the schist-hosted deposits are in the form of veinlets and stockworks. Larger veins filling open spaces along schistosity planes are also present. Fractures in Richmond Hill mine are related to breccia pipe emplacement and influenced by the Precambrian foliation.Fractures in sediment-hosted (ACFR) and intrusion-hosted (Gilt Edge) deposits are mode I systematic joints. These fractures, and similar ones examined in seven locations outside the mines, are related mostly to the formation of the Lead-Deadwood dome. Fracture trends vary from one area to another depending on their location with respect to the dome. Other factors, such as the Black Hills uplift, pluton emplacement, and Precambrian foliation, may also affect the fracture trends. The proximity of the mines to domes formed by multiple intrusions, the associated fracture patterns and density, and existence of breccias, may be used in exploration for similar deposits in the northern Black Hills or other areas of similar geologic settings."

"IntroductionThe Key Lake uranium-nickel ore deposits are located in the Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan, Canada (Fig. 1). Many papers have been published on Key Lake in the past (Dahlkarnp and Tan, 1977; Kirchner and Tan, 1977; Kirchner et al., 1980). Immediately after its incorporation in 1968, Uranerzbergbau GmbH, a German holding company, set up exploration subsidiaries in Australia, the United States and Canada. This account reviews those exciting years starting with the concept to explore the rim of the Athabasca Basin in Saskatchewan, and leading up to the discovery of the deposits in 1975 and 1976.A few summary statements can be made:• The discovery of Key Lake resulted from a very systematic exploration approach and the persistence of Uranerz, the operator. • Cluff Lake and Rabbit Lake had been discovered some seven years before, but it was the discovery of the Key Lake deposits which brought Saskatchewan to the forefront to become Canada's foremost uranium producing province.• The experiences gained at Key Lake, which were subsequently published, triggered the discovery of many other deposits of similar, or even larger, size than Key Lake. The spatial relationship of those deposits to graphitic conductors and hydrothermal alteration zones are presently the most effective indicators for locating new deposits - indicators which were first recognized at Key Lake.• Key Lake is, and will remain for some years to come, the largest producing high-grade uranium mine in the world."

"In many plant trial s(1,2) it has been proven that very small amounts (10 to 20 ppm) of uranium dissolved in mine water can be effectively recovered by the use of ion exchange resins and this uranium recovery has many advantages. In this paper an economic analysis at different levels of uranium contamination and at different market prices of uranium are described.For this study an operating mine-mill complex with a sulphuric acid leach circuit, followed by solvent extraction (SX) process, is considered, where contaminated mine water is available in excess of process requirements. lt is further assumed that the sulphuric acid eluant containing uranium would be mixed with the mill pregnant liquor stream that proceeds to the SX plant for final uranium recovery.Recovery by Ion ExchangeMine water, in this study, is defined as the water coming from the underground mine, or mine pits, and the run-off water from stockpiles, mine shops, crushing plant , washdown areas, etc.In nature, uranium mainly occurs in two stages; reduced (tetravalent) and oxidized (hexavalent) . The oxidation of sulphides present in the orebody often causes the presence of S04- and acidity in mine water, and this acidic water readily dissolves U+6 part of the depo sit. "Seismic tomography is a process for obtaining images or maps of seismic velocity or other seismic properties of a rock mass. Seismic velocity images reveal variation in elastic moduli which, in tum, are related to several properties required in the geological or geomechanical assessment of a rock mass. Seismic velocity is sensitive to lithology, discontinuities, and in situ stress. Spatial or temporal variation of these properties may be indirectly assessed. Tomographic measurements are sensitive to volumes of ground, rather than determinations at points, or along lines or surfaces, as in conventional geological or geomechanical measurements or mappings.Tomography surveys are complementary to conventional measurements as they have the capability to interrogate a substantially larger volume of ground. They are thus useful in discerning trends or patterns in regions between or surrounding conventional ""point"" measurements of lithology, rock quality, stress, or other parameters of interest. Seismic velocity images give broad indications of trends in velocity; their spatial resolution of ground properties is typically on the order of five to ten per cent of the nominal survey dimension.Research in seismic tomography has been carried out for several years, and the capabilities and limitations of the technique in mining environments are beginning to be understood. This report reviews the present capabilities of seismic tomography surveys in mining, emphasizing rock mechanics applications. Six case studies are used as examples to demonstrate the capabilities of the method in assessing lithological variation, density and orientation of discontinuities, and the effects of stress."

As is well known, the standard Al-Cu 206 cast alloys have extremely low iron contents, usually less than 0.15 wt. %. Recently it is found that the iron contents of the 206 cast alloys can be extended up to 0.5 wt. % through the precise control of the iron-rich intermetallic phases. In the present work, the tensile fracture surfaces of the 206 cast alloys with various iron contents are systematically analyzed to understand the failure mechanisms. Results show that higher iron contents can reduce the tensile properties (especially the ductility) of the alloys mainly due to the increasing volume percent and size of the iron-rich intermetallics. Tensile failure mainly occurs at the iron-rich intermetallics/matrix interfaces for the platelet ß-Fe, but by the self-disassociation for the Chinese script a-Fe and Alm(FeMn). Cracking is easier to initiate and propagate along the longitudinal axis of the platelet intermetallics, but it can be deflected along the branches/arms of the Chinese script iron-rich phases, making the alloy more resistant to the propagation of the cracks, and thus the Chinese script iron-rich intermetallics are less harmful than platelet ß-Fe. In addition, it was also found that the Chinese script a-Fe has even a less damaging effect compared to the Chinese script Alm(FeMn) due to the relatively small size and compact morphology.

"The presence of radon from uranium-bearing ores, waste and from backfill material introduced underground to provide ground support, work platform and waste disposal functions, requires that ventilation controls be established to maintain safe working level concentrations. One approach has been developed at Queen's University to quantify radon and radon daughter source level s and to estimate ventilation requirements necessary to maintain these safe levels.Knowledge concerning the sources of radioactive contaminants and their production quantities is of value for planning and design stages of ventilation control systems. For any given mine layout, radiation level estimates may be forecast and modified by ventilation network design where excessive production quantities may exist.Behaviour of Radon Gas in MinesRadon gas, produced from the decay of Ra-226 in a host medium, will diffuse through porous media. In areas adjacent to mine workings, radon will be liberated into the mine atmosphere. The rate of radon emanation is proportional to the rate at which radon is produced within the host material (a function of the ore grade of U308) , to the radon concentration gradient in the host pores and to the diffusion properties of the material.The radon source concentration is determined by the rate at which Rn-222 is produced by the decay of Ra-226, and by the emanating coefficient (E), or fraction of the radon which escapes from the source matrix and is free to diffuse through the pore spaces."

"This paper describes a highly versatile variable speed unit with a torque multiplication feature as a direct replacement for a fluid coupling .The unit is comprised of a modulating clutch with torque converter and lock-up options.The UCD does not start or stop the motor. This is carried out in the normal manner.The UCD continually monitors and rapidly regulates the output speed to the requirement of a set point demand from input signals or a pre-set program with full manual override.The pre-set program can include start and stop ramps, top speed and minimum speed regulation and also mid-speed set point with security for man-riding, etc. Speed variation is from zero to 100% on a constant duty basis.The input signals can be from any source, e.g. belt weigher. load profile bunker probes, mine monitoring system, etc.The UCD when fitted with a torque converter has a torque multiplication feature which automatically provides a starting torque up to two and a half times greater than the full load torque without exceeding the normal motor power levels.IntroductionIt is common practice in the mining industry to drive conveyors, whether they be belt or chain, through a transmission system incorporating a fluid coupling between the driving motor and gear-box .However, there are drawbacks and in an effort to attain a better degree of drive and control, two-speed motors - inverters cycle- converters - hydrostatic drives, etc ., have been introduced."

We present an integrated analysis of laboratory-based thermally induced fracturing and results of numerical models to give insight to the role of thermal shock fracture on geothermal reservoir rocks. Thermal stimulation is a reservoir permeability enhancement technique applied to commercial geothermal reservoir rocks to enhance fluid injection capabilities for spent power plant working fluids. The process is well known to enhance permeability but the thermodynamic and physical constraints of the process are less certain. In an attempt to constrain the interaction and the ideal conditions that lead to permeability enhancement, experimental procedures were carried out to mimic the conditions that a reservoir rock would experience during a thermal stimulation using temperature differentials ranging from 50-300°C. Samples underwent such thermal gradients under controlled laboratory conditions and were characterized for the changes to permeability, porosity, ultrasonic velocities, dynamic elastic moduli and petrological changes. The thermal stimulation was simulated in a FLAC2D thermal numerical model to investigate the nature of the thermally induced changes in the sample. The development of this model also allows us to investigate the relationship between geological characteristics and the ability to thermally stimulate any type of rock. The results indicate that numerical thermal shocking experiments are corroborated by laboratory-based results. The implication of this study is that the refined numerical models present an insight to the conditions and constraints under which thermal stimulation can prove to enhance permeability that could not be gained through purely laboratory-based studies.

When applying numerical techniques to problems of deformation of rocks, the body to be analyzed is divided into small portions and is represented by a system of points linked together with the neighboring points. In the so-called distinct element modeling, the particles in the system are directly connected by springs and a contact law is used to specify forces on the particles to simulate the mechanical behavior of the body. The relation between the spring stiffness and commonly measured material properties, such as the Young’s modulus and the Poisson’s ratio, should be known a priori. For the general case of a random packing of particles, the relation is found by means of a process in which a system of particles and set of parameters are prepared to simulate a set of specimen-size test and then the input parameters are chosen to match the measured material properties. The validity of the numerical result is only demonstrated by comparison model behaviors with the measured responses. The process includes trial-and-error manner, therefore, no model is complete to reproduce the mechanical properties. In this paper, a relation between the spring stiffness and the elastic constants; the Young’s modulus and the Poisson’s ratio, is introduced to a three-dimensional distinct lattice spring method. Two simple numerical examples will be presented to demonstrate the performance of the method with the procedure for the determination of the spring stiffness.

"Australia's prosperity relies significantly on income generated from exports of resources and agricultural products. In 1989-1990, coal was Australia's most valuable export commodity, contributing. A $5.7 billion or 14% of all export income.The abundance and quality of its coal resources and the proximity of Australia to the rapidly developing economies of Southeast Asia were significant factors that encouraged export-oriented growth and investment and will continue to do so. On the other hand, the 1980shighlighted the sensitivity of the industry to international changes in supply and demand, currency and socio-political forces.Following many years of disappointing returns for investors, mainly as a result of falling Australian dollar coal prices, resolve will be necessary to maintain competitiveness with resource-rich nations. In recent years, operators, unions and governments have begun to embark on a long overdue rationalization of domestic issues in a bid to increase productivity and reduce costs.The nature of mining operations is also changing; deeper surface mines and the growth of longwall mining will require the development of new technology and skills. Other challenges emerging from the international environmental debate will require that Australia responds appropriately to demands for cleaner fuels, energy efficiency and environmental responsibility.The future development of the Australian coal industry will therefore be influenced by its own ability to become more efficient and mature in the production of quality coal products and through rational international response to environmental questions."

"IntroductionThe Republic of Indonesia is a developing Southeast Asian country that unites the Indian and Pacific oceans, and spreads across nearly 14000 islands with a total land area of about two million km-. The distance across the country approximates the distance across Canada: Indonesia extends for more than 6000 km from the northern tip of Sumatra to the eastern border of Irian Jaya in the middle of New Guinea. With a population of around 180million, Indonesia is one of the world's most populous countries. A mix of 366 ethnic groups populates the country and there are some 250 distinct languages spoken. The topography of Indonesia generally is quite rugged because of its numerous volcanos. For example, the island of Java has 121 volcanos, of which 15 rise above 3000 m and another 44 reach heights between 2000 m and 3000 m.Indonesia has a diversified resource base, with plentiful energy resources (coal, oil, gas and hydroelectric), significant mineral deposits, large timber potential and a developed system of agricultural commodity production and export. A high proportion of the primary resources are on the sparsely populated islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan, whereas 7'3 of Indonesia's people reside on Java, or on 70/0 of the country's land area.
