"In the Timmins area, a close spatial and chronological association exists between gold deposits and two major stratabound carbonate-rich members and related quartz-feldspar porphyries. Synvo/canic and metamorphogenic are the two main types of mineralization recognized. Synvolcanic ores include the stratiform quartz-ankerite ""veins"", pyritic carbonates and chert-carbonate-tuff sedimentary rocks and epigenetic ventrelated breccias and stringer zones. Metamorphogenic ores consist of quartz-carbonate fracture fillings in dilatant zones developed during various phases of regional deformation and metamorphism. They are classically epigenetic in character.The evidence suggests a primary syngenetic enrichment of gold on the ocean floor and in vent areas during submarine felsic volcanism and related exhalative-hydrothermal activity followed by further enrichment into quartz-carbonate stockworks during regional deformation and greenschist metamorphism.Although normally thin (a few hundred metres), carbonate members in Archean volcanic terrain represent intense hydrothermal activity which could have transported and enriched gold. They should be used to locate fossil vents and structurally favourable zones where economic concentrations of gold may be found."

"The contact between dolomite of the St. George formation (Cambro-Ordovician) and limestone of the overlying Table Head formation (Middle Ordovician) is a regional disconformity. This is best illustrated from exposures on Pointe Riche Peninsula, near Table Point, and along Port au Port Bay. The contact occurs along 180 miles of the west coast of Newfoundland from St. John Island in the north to the western part of Port au Port Peninsula in the south. A disconformity of the same age occurs between the Romaine and Mingan formations on the north side of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.Dolomitic beds beneath the disconformity locally contain concentrations of base-metal sulphides. Sphalerite occurs in dolomite pseudobreccias of the St. George formation at Zinc Lake, 7 miles northeast of Daniels Harbour. The 'Western Newfoundland Lower-Middle Ordovician regional disconformity is interpreted as having originated on and near the edge of a broad platform, and to have provided an important regional geological control in the localization of zinc mineralization."

This paper reports the anodizing voltage, gas evolution and sparking behaviors of an anodized coating formed on AZ91D in a silicate containing solution. According to their responses to an anodizing current, a four-stage anodizing mechanism is proposed. At the same time, the formed coating is characterized in terms of its microstructure, composition, thickness and corrosion performance. It was found that deposition of MgSiO3, Mg(OH)2 and MgO as well as dehydration of Mg(OH)2 are involved in the anodising process; the vigorous gas evolution accompanied by intensive sparking and the corresponding negative anodising efficiency in the later stage of the anodising process are closely associated with thermal decomposition of water due to the high temperature resulting from the intense sparking on the surface of the anodized alloy; the thickness, porosity, and composition of the anodised coating on a magnesium alloy depend on the final anodising cell voltage; and the corrosion resistance of a thick but porous coating containing more silicates appears to be more corrosion resistant than a thin but compact coating containing less silicates.

"Most electromagnetic methods presently used in mining exploration are of the moving source type; i.e., the primary field source is moved simultaneously and in a fixed configuration with the receiver. Of the fixed-source methods, which employ a stationary primary field and a moving receiver, the Turam method is the most effective and has marked advantages over alternative electromagnetic methods. The results are little affected by topographic relief, and a high degree of resolution can be obtained because of the constant relation between source field and investigation area. Another inherent advantage of the Turam configuration is that it provides more favourable dimensional relations. Thus, the primary field attenuates at a much lower rate than in moving-source configurations and, secondly, the method is size sensitive; i.e., conductor size affects the strength of the response, which is not the case with moving-source methods. These factors result in a considerably better potential depth penetration."

Introduction Of all Canada's mineral resources, its coal deposits have probably received the most continued attention by the Geological Survey since its inception ninety years ago. A casual review of the many geological maps of coal areas by the Geological Survey will show how geological and topographical detail on the maps has gradually increased to meet the ever urgent demands of the mining industry. In the early stages of exploration, the mapping done, especially in the coalfields of the Rocky mountains, was largely of a reconnaissance nature. On these maps the topographical relief, where shown, is indicated by form lines or by hachures, the boundaries of the coal-bearing formations are only approximately defined, and the geological structure of the coal seams is illustrated by one or more generalized cross-sections. Once mining development on a coal area began, there arose a demand for more detailed maps. To meet this need, topographical and geological maps on a scale of one inch to a mile were made, in which the ?topographical relief is shown by contour lines having generally an interval of 100 or 200feet. On the geological maps, the boundaries of the formations are accurately delineated, and the geological structure of the area is illustrated by one or more structure sections drawn across the area, which show the position and attitude of fault lines, the crests and troughs of folds, and the attitude of the various formations (See maps of Costigan Coal Field, 1905, and Cascade Coal Basin, 1907, by D. B. Dowling).

"SINCE their inception, the mineral industries have, from time to time, been confronted by various and sundry problems. These have been identified, attacked and solved by means of a slow methodical process peculiar to these industries. During the past decade, these industries have experienced increasing difficulty in attracting and retaining an adequate supply of manpower. This poses a situation which seems to be unlike those that came before it in that it appears to be immune to those methods of attack which were successful in the past. Despite various attacks upon the problem, its seriousness appears to be increasing at an increasing rate. The point has now been reached where the President of AIME recently expressed the opinion that this is the most serious problem facing these industries at this time (1). Another observer has gone so far as to state, ""Given the motivation and the determination, the crisis in mineral education in Canada, can, in time be met. But it will take a generation if we Start DOW (2)"".Part of the difficulty arises out of the identification and assessment of the problem itself. For, although the manpower shortage has been developing over a fairly long period of time, there still appears to be no unanimity concerning its seriousness and the nature of the threat which it poses. Some observers continue to maintain that the current situation is not new at all, but is merely the reappearance of something old which is cyclic in nature. They observe that in the past there were numerous periods where the mineral industries encountered manpower shortages but that, in each instance, the situation eventually rectified itself. Furthermore, they draw attention to the fact that the current problem is not confined to the mineral industries but that in fact all industries are experiencing an increasing manpower shortage. They are therefore confident that if left alone the present problem will eventually disappear."

"This paper describes exploration and development to 1982 in the southern half of the northeastern British Columbia (Peace River or Northeast Block) inner foothills metallurgical coal belt. Gates Formation, Fort St. John Group, is the primary target; Gething Formation, Bullhead Group, is secondary. This part of the belt remains wilderness when compared to its other parts. Practical formational and structural mapping is described. A local problem known as the Secus Mountain or Mount Belcourt conglomerates is discussed. The three major explorers have been Denison Mines, PetroCanada, and Crows Nest Resources, all with partners. Initial mine construction and rail spur construction are continuing. The new town of Tumbler Ridge is being built. Introduction This paper describes exploration and development to 1982 in the southern half of the northeast British Columbia metallurgical coal belt. The area (Fig. 1) trends 120 km northwest from the Alberta border to the Wolverine River and Bullmoose Creek. The belt averages 15 km in width, and is 20 km at its widest. Physiographically, the area is dominated by rugged inner foothills, with relief to 1,500 m. The trend of the structures is transected by a dozen rivers flowing southwest to northeast away from the Continental Divide. The Rockies, lying immediately to the west, control the climate. One fact continues to colour all coal work in the area. When compared to the other parts of the western Canadian foothills and Rockies coking belt, it remains the least accessible and least mapped portion. Lack of access also makes all work expensive. Current activity centres about two mines in construction at the northwestern end of the area. Denison Mines and partners are developing their Quintette project, and Teck Corporation and partners are developing their Bullmoose project. PetroCanada and partners have intensively explored their Monkman-Duke Mounta,in project, but mine construction awaits better economic times. The rest of the area remains lightly explored, with the exception of some intensive work on particular structures by Denison and Petro-Canada. The focus of coal work has been metallurgical bituminous coal seams contained primarily in the Gates Formation (Fig. 2) and secondarily in the Gething Formation. These formations are found in generally en-echelon structures ranging to several kilometres in width."

In most copper solvent-extraction operations, an important consideration in choice of extractant is the requirement for high selectivity of copper over iron. Ester-modified aldoxime extractants presently offer the best Cu:Fe selectivity. In some plants, however, the process feed liquors contain significant amounts of manganese but little iron. Although manganese is not chemically extracted by oximes, trace amounts are carried over to the electrowinning circuit by physical entrainment. This may result in anodic oxidation of manganese which, in turn, can cause oxidative degradation of the organic phase when returned to the solvent-extraction circuit in the spent electrolyte. Many of these operations prefer to operate with higher levels of iron reporting to the advance electrolyte, as appropriate control of the Fe(II)/Fe(III) couple will ensure that manganese remains in the benign Mn(II) form. A new reagent, LS 4202, designed by Cytec, now offers the possibility of tailoring the iron co-extraction, so that appropriate Cu:Fe selectivity can be achieved in the solvent-extraction operation to maintain an electrolyte Fe:Mn mass ratio of >10:1, while retaining the other benefits offered by ester-modified aldoximes. The results of an integrated solvent extraction-electrowinning pilot-plant trial are presented, in which the performances of the conventional extractants ACORGA® M.5774 and LIX® 984N are compared with LS 4202. The Cu:Fe selectivity is demonstrated, along with results on the transfer of other impurities to the advance electrolyte.

"The potential for mudrushes is a potential hazard that should be evaluated during cave mining studies. Mudrushes are a phenomenon that can have very different origins, but produce the same results: injury, loss of life, damage to property, excess dilution, production delays, or mine closure. Although mudrushes are more common in cave mines than other mines, any mining activity that enables the accumulation of fine particles and water is susceptible to mudflow. This paper describes the process developed by the authors during the past decade to evaluate the risk of mudrushes, specifically in caving and sublevel caving mines.RÉSUMÉ Un danger potentiel qui devrait être évalué durant les études d’exploitation par blocs foudroyés est la possibilité d’afflux de boue. Le phénomène des afflux de boue peut avoir des origines très diverses; les résultats sont cependant les mêmes : des blessures, des pertes de vie, des dommages à la propriété, une dilution excessive, des délais de production ou des fermetures de mines. Bien que les afflux de boue soient plus fréquents dans les mines exploitées par blocs foudroyés, toute activité minière qui permet l’accumulation de particules fines et d’eau est sujette à des coulées de boue. As the building has recently become bigger, higher, and freeform, a technology called BIM(Building Information Modeling), which is a key technology that integrates construction and IT(Information Technology), has been rapidly introduced and expanded. Because BIM technology offers various benefits, countries that introduced BIM early has been actively promoted. However, misperceptions of BIM are prevalent in countries such as South Korea that have adopted it relatively late, with lack of awareness of its fundamental purposes. Under these circumstances, transparent and quantitative performance assessment needs to be executed in order to eliminate the misperceptions, and to explain and revitalize the BIM introduction. These quantitative performance measure KPI (Key Performance Indicators) to be measured should be prioritized. As derive performance indicators in terms of the four types (financial, customer, internal processes, learning and growth), and performance management systems, Uses the BSC to seek a balance between short-term financial goals, values and the value of long-term goals. Uses the BSC(Balanced Scorecards) to derive performance indicators in terms of the four types (financial, customer, internal processes, learning and growth), and performance management systems, seeking a balance between the value of short-term financial objectives and the value of long-term objectives. Through this, the KPI (Key Performance Indicators) which is used for measuring the effect of the BIM will be generated and also the method that can determine whether the generated KPI figures are objectively inter-connected will be suggested as well.

"Canada doesn't really have a tax system for mining - it has eleven separate tax systems! The consequent maze adds some undefinable margin of difficulty to making investment decisions in Canada. But, this 11U1Ze is not likely to be simplified. Solution: learn it and sell it! Intricate Network of Winding PathwaysWebster's New World Dictionary defines the word ""maze"" as follows: ""a confusing, intricate network of winding pathways; labyrinth ... a state of confusion or bewilderment"". Webster's does not go on to give an example of a maze, but the dictionary could easily have referred to the taxation of a Canadian mining operation. The uninitiated would almost certainly look upon such taxation as a maze of the most perplexing sort.Twenty years ago, Canada's tax system was really quite simple. It is true that Canadian mining profits were subject to three levels of taxation (federal income tax, provincial income tax, and provincial mining tax), but this didn't pose a problem. Prior to 1974, at least the provincial income tax systems were somewhat the same in terms of rules .and rates, and even the provincial mining tax systems resembled one another. Mining profits were subject to pretty much the same rules, no matter what province or territory hosted the mine. Those were the “good old days” one could even dare to generalize about tax rates without fear of being labelled an imbecile!"

"Maximizing the value of each tonne of processed ore is the goal for all operations. Cyanidation processing of gold-copper ores has been challenging since its first use in 1889. The current practice treats a bleed or the total flow of mill solution to recover copper as copper sulfide (by sulfidization, acidification, recycling, and thickening), or to recover the cyanide (by acidification-volatilizationneutralization). The process presented uses the adsorption of copper cyanide by carbon and the selective elution of copper from carbon to concentrate copper into a smaller stream. Copper contained in the smaller stream is precipitated as copper cyanide.RÉSUMÉ Toutes les exploitations ont pour objectif commun d’optimiser la valeur de chaque tonne de minerai traité. Depuis sa première utilisation en 1889, la méthode de traitement par cyanuration des minerais aurifère et cuprifère s’est révélée complexe. La pratique actuelle traite la saignée ou le débit total d’une solution de traitement du concentrateur pour récupérer le cuivre sous la forme de sulfure de cuivre (par sulfuration, acidification, recyclage et épaississement), ou pour récupérer le cyanure (par acidification, volatilisation et neutralisation). "The current increase in gold price may presage a resurgence of gold milling plants in Canada similar to that of the thirties. Because the industry has been at a low ebb for almost two decades, future operating responsibilities will likely devolve upon personnel with limited cyanidation experience. My comments, which may seem elementary to experienced operators, are directed towards these industry newcomers to highlight operational features in cyanidation which forty years' experience has shown me to 0e of importance. A brief review of what actually takes place in a cyanide circuit may help give a better understanding of the topics to be discussed.These will include: (1) expose the gold (2) dissolve the gold(3) make solid/liquid separation(4) recover the gold from solution.1. Expose the GoldThe chemical key to gold recovery by cyanidation lies in the ready solubility of the metal in a relatively weak solution (0.04%-0.075% NaCN equivalent by weight) of calcium or sodium cyanide. Obviously, dissolution cannot start unless the cya1ide is in contact with the gold. As an analogy, the yolk of a hard-boiled egg can oe taken to represent the gold particle and the egg white and shell, the surrounding gangue or sulphide host. As the sl1ell and white must be fractured to expose the yolk, similarly the surrounding gorngue or sulphide host must be broken or fractured to enable the cyanide solution to contact the gold."

Powder metallurgy (P/M) technique is known for its capability of producing near-net-shape parts. Its specific characteristics have resulted in low cost and eliminated of many secondary machining. However, more and more P/M parts do require additional operations to fulfil their complex geometric features and surface roughness. Many of the machining factors that influence the machinability of cast and wrought steel parts, such as cutting speed, feedrate, coolant, tool geometry and shape, are also considered in the machining of P/M components. The special feature in P/M structure is the porosity that can decrease the machinability and shorten the tool life. Different variables have been considered in the machinability of P/M materials. Densities and the free machining additive manganese sulphide (MnS), are the two main factors of material composition, which dominate the P/M machining performance. Machining process is the main method that generates the desired working surface of machining components. This paper will discuss the metallurgical structure of the powder metallurgy components, their physical properties and possible issues when encountering machining operation. Turning operation has been tested in this investigation to show the relationship between the cutting speed, federate, cutting forces and chip formation. This investigation also discusses how the free machining additive, manganese sulphide, affects the P/M structure and machinability in order to understand how the metallurgical structure can affect the machining operation and, how to obtain the optimised surface results.

The past decade shows record increases in global demand for minerals and metals with an accompanying significant decline in skilled personnel. Mining companies today are examining new technologies to maximize production, reduce costs, and create safer work conditions to deal with this shortfall. Automation of an open-pit mine haulage system is receiving attention as a beneficial option since it provides more consistent and efficient operation of mining equipment, it removes workers from potential danger, it reduces fuel consumption significantly reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and it can help optimize vehicle repairs and equipment replacement because of more-predictable and better-controlled maintenance. This paper describes a simulation model under development using the EXTENDSIM software package to examine scale-up issues and constraints of autonomous vehicles in comparison to a manual system. The software can predict and manage Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), such as productivity, safety, cost, equipment failures, fuel consumption, and tire wear under different road and load conditions. By breaking-down the various systems of an autonomous haulage truck and simulating the overall haulage system using a Monte Carlo approach, the model becomes a flexible and powerful tool to use within a mining organization. Direct comparison to a manuallyrun system can be done to show the cost and operational benefits of automation. Project managers can use this tool to guide decision-making about possible application of autonomous haulage trucks at a specific mine site.

"To optimize gold recovery in complex leach-to-electrowinning processes, Gekko Systems developed the Gekko resin exchange column (G-REX) as an intermediate step, using a highly gold-selective resin to isolate contaminant metals. The AuRIX®100 resin produced by Purolite is licensed exclusively to Gekko, with the G-REX column designed specifically for this resin. Operational experience has been gained at the Castlemaine Goldfields Ballarat gold mine. In near-continuous operation since 2008, the Ballarat plant treats unclarified concentrate leach solution. "Many organizations which have implemented Total Quality Management (TQM) are finding that the process has either stalled or is not working so well as originally envisioned. This can be particularly evident in an engineering environment where the uniqueness of engineers and their particular culture has not been adequately considered. Winning the commitment of a highly educated group ojprojemnnJJ1s to the TQM concepts, which are often initially 5W2 as too simplistic poses special challenges.Successful TQM implementations are found among technical groups where employees have significant input into creating the new work culture, feel empowered to make changes and are well trained in teamwork. A coach who is knowledgeable in implementation problems can, when working closely with the technical teams, help them circumvent obstacles and guide them successfully through the difficult early phases. The remaining key ingredient for success is supportive management which leads the change and is both informed and appreciative of the accomplishment being made.This Paper is based on first-hand experience with common problems and results encountered in implementing TQM in an engineering environment. Described in the paper are ways of avoiding these problems through awareness of the unique nature of engineering groups, implementation planning, just-in-time training and coaching people in the TQM process. "This paper studies the characterization and dissolution of a Nigerian pyrolusite ore, reporting the results of ore physicochemical analyses and detailed ore characterization before and after leaching at optimal conditions. Ore dissolution rate increased proportional to acid concentration and temperature, but decreased with ore particle size. In a 4 M H2SO4 solution at 80°C with a particle size of –90+75 µm and moderate agitation, ore dissolution rate reached 78.7%. Unleached residue produced under optimal leaching conditions consisted of silica with admixtures of cristobalite and stishovite. The calculated activation energy supported the proposed diffusion control mechanism for the process.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article étudie la caractérisation et la dissolution d’un minerai de pyrolusite du Nigeria, il donne les résultats des analyses physicochimiques du minerai et de la caractérisation détaillée du minerai avant et après la lixiviation sous des conditions optimales. Le taux de dissolution du minerai augmentait proportionnellement à la concentration de l’acide mais décroissait avec la taille des particules. Dans une solution 4 M H2SO4 à 80 °C, avec une granulométrie de –90+75 µm et une agitation modérée, le taux de dissolution du minerai a atteint 78,7 %. Most of the gold in the Late Archean Witwatersrand Basin is of detrital origin but, in its present form, it is metamorphosed. The only relict detrital features preserved are the morphological characteristics of some placer gold particles. Regional burial metamorphism in the shallower and deeper levels of the Witwatersrand Supergroup reached temperatures around 300°C and 350°C at pressures between 2 kbar and 3 kbar, respectively, estimated from phase relations, chlorite-chloritoid exchange thermometry and chlorite thermometry. Metamorphism of the gold involved compositional homogenization of individual gold particles and partial recrystallization. Various infJ.1tration events caused the partial mobilization of the gold at slightly lower temperatures, between 240°C and 300°C. These infiltrations can be related to crustal extension during the deposition of massive carbonate sequences of the Transvaal Supergroup (around 2.5 Ga), and later to the emplacement of the Bushveld Complex, and to the Vredefort event around 2.0 Ga ago. The mobility of the gold was dependent on the sulfur fugacity prevailing in a particular horizon which, in tum, was determined by the amount of pyrite (and other sulfides) present in that horizon. With the sulfur fugacity being controlled by stratigraphy, low fluid rock ratios in a pyrite-rich horizon were most conducive for the mobilization of the gold.
