SINCE 1934 there has been a marked revival of interest in the Porcupine district, especially in the eastern portion of the area, where exploration on the property of Pamour Gold Mines has indicated the presence of extensive gold-bearing deposits. Owing to the prevalence of overburden and the limited amount of exploratory work that has been done, little information is available as yet concerning the distribution and structural relationships of the rocks in the area to the east of Porcupine lake. In order to throw some light on the structural conditions in this section, a brief discussion of the sequence and character of the formations in the better known, producing section of the camp has been included. It should be emphasized that this paper is a preliminary study and that, consequently, the conclusions expressed should not be regarded as final. The writer wishes to acknowledge his indebtedness to P. C. Benedict, whose study of the geological relationships on the Foley-O'Brien property has made possible a fuller understanding of the structure in the central portion of the area. "IntroductionThe Key Lake uranium-nickel deposits are located within a Mineral Lease centred at latitude 57 ° 12' north and longitude 105 °39' west along the southeastern rim of the Athabasca sedimentary basin in northern Saskatchewan, approximately 240 km north of La Ronge (Fig. 1). Access is provided by an allweather provincial highway from Pinchousc, situated about 200 km to the south, and a private airstrip maintained at the mincsitc.These deposits have been developed by Key Lake Mining Corporation on behalf of the Saskatchewan Uranium Joint Venture. Participants in the joint venture include Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation (50%), Urancrz Exploration and Mining Limited (33 1/3 %) and Eldor Resources Limited (16 2/3 %).Considerable geological work has been conducted on the Key Lake orebodies and reported in summary papers published by Dahlkamp and Thn, (1977), Dahlkamp, (1978), Gatzweiler eta/., (1979) and Kirchner el a/. , (1980). However, intensive geological research is ongoing, particularly since many problems regarding ore genesis and controls remain unresolved . Exploration History and DevelopmentThe events (Gatzweiler eta/., 1980) which led to the discovery of the Key Lake ore bodies began in the summer of 1971 by following up on the reports of airborne radiometric anomalies and anomalous radon values in the Zimmer Lake water situated approximately 5 km to 6 km to the southwest. This work succeeded in locating a few high-grade uranium and nickel-bearing boulders associated with esker material. An integrated program, consisting of various geochemical and geophysical surveys along with diamond drilling, culminated in the discovery of the Gaertner orebody during July 1975. Subsequent fence drilling across the strike extensions of this ore structure located the Deilmann deposit, approximately I km to the northeast, in June 1976"

"Zinc-iron alloy coatings can be produced by either thermally alloying hot-dipped galvanized steel or by electro deposition. Stelco Inc. produces a thermally alloyed Zn-Fe alloy-coated steel, which is mechanically wiped to remove free zinc.A more extensive use of Zn-Fe alloy-coated steel has been predicted for unexposed autobody and structural part applications, since this material is characterized by good spot weldability and formability, and provides superior corrosion resistance under automotive primers.This investigation has examined the coating composition, corrosion resistance, spot weldability and formability of Stelco's Zn-Fe alloy-coated steel and found its properties to be similar to those of Zn-Fe alloy-coated steel produced by post coating annealing.IntroductionRecently, there has been increased automotive interest in galvanneal, which is characterized by good spot weldability, good paintabilityt and good corrosion resistance when primed. Stelco produces a thermally alloyed zinc-iron coated sheet product similar to galvanneal. However, this product is produced by mechanically wiping the free zinc from the surface of hotdip galvanize to expose the underlying zinc-iron alloy.The surface of Stelco zinc-iron alloy-coated sheet is matte gray and has longitudinal streaks which result from contact with Kevlar wipers during production (Fig. I). This paper describes the coating composition, corrosion resistance, weldability, formability and surface appearance of Stelco zinc iron alloy coatings and, wherever possible, compares these properties to those of galvanneal."

Note. - Securing mine roof through consolidating thin or otherwise incompetent strata to increase overall thickness of the immediate roof beam is a new method of roof support and control which has aroused great interest amongst mining engineers and which is now being experimented with and thoroughly investigated by the United States Bureau of Mines. A paper on Roof Bolting, illustrated by photographs and motion-picture films, will be presented by Edward Thomas, of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, at the forthcoming Annual Meeting of the Mining Society of Nova Scotia. In the following pages, Mr. Thomas describes the methods used in roof bolting as illustrated by the photographs that accompanied his paper. The photographs are supplied through the courtesy of the United States Bureau of Mines, whose willing cooperation with miners and mining engineers in Canada is very well known and even more greatly appreciated. This method of publishing Mr. Thomas's paper is adopted because few, if any, Canadian mining engineers have actually seen installations of roof bolts and it is felt that the best possible presentation of such an interesting subject through the medium of the Bulletin will be attained by publication of the photograps over explanatory captions. - Ed.

The Jeffrey mine of the Canadian Johns-Manville Co., Limited, is in the town of Asbestos, situated approximately 100 miles northeast of Montreal and about the same distance southwest of Quebec, in Richmond county, Quebec. Mining operations were started in 1881 on outcrops on a hill, as a side-hill cut, followed by a second and third cut. This development was the forerunner of the present large open-pit operations, the mine now ranking as the largest open-pit asbestos mine in the world. Operations were first carried on by hand, then by horsepower and later by stem cableways. By 1914, the derrick spans, 2,000 feet or more long, became unwieldy. To overcome this, and also to eliminate hand labour as much as possible, steam shovels and railway haulage were introduced. The steam shovels were replaced in 1928 by larger electric shovels of the full-revolving type.

"Some typical landslide phenomena in Western Greece, in terms of the geological composition and structure of the affected materials, induced by heavy rainfalls are thoroughly studied and analyzed. The studied cases involved composite landslides on Flysch and Neogene weak rock materials that constitute the most critical landslide prone geological formations in Greece. The studied cases named Platanos, Platanitis and Karya include representative landslide sites as regards to the geological composition and structure of the displaced formations. Thus: (a) flysch formation includes different lithological units as shales, marls, siltstones, sandstones and conglomerates and is closely related to the Alpine orogenesis, suffering intense past tectonic movements and (b) the Plio-Pleistocene sediments include clayey marls, marlstones and siltstones. The investigated landslides , affecting mainly transportation routes, are closely related to heavy rainfalls induced by extreme meteorological events and are controlled by active fault tectonics. Long term movement monitoring using borehole inclinometers and surface benchmarks showed that landslides control was effective only when the proper stabilization measures were taken.INTRODUCTIONLandslides represent a major threat to human life, property, infrastructure and natural environment in most regions of the world. They are recognized by the scientific and politic authorities as having a major socio-economic impact and they represent a significant hazard for the population and the properties in particular locations. Landslide hazard expressed as the probability of occurrence within a reference time period and is a function of the spatial and temporal probability (Varnes, 1984; Guzzetti et al. 1999; Lee and Jones, 2004). The spatial probability of landslide initiation (susceptibility) is mainly related to static causal factors (slope inclination, material properties, etc.), while temporal probability is mainly related to dynamic causal factors such as rain input, increased groundwater levels and drainage, earthquakes, etc. (Van Westen et al. 2005)."

"The Scully Mine deposit lies within the group of metasediments that together comprise the rocks of the Labrador Trough. The ore itself still retains the bedding characteristics of the parent rocks and on this basis has been divided into three main members, namely: Upper, Middle and Lower. The Upper and Lower both show many of the bedding characteristics of the cherty taconites of the northern U.S.A.; the Middle member is a coarse-grained friable specularite rock. The ore minerals are hematite (normally present in the specular variety) and magnetite, although the latter rarely occurs in concentrations greater than 20 per cent. Gangue minerals are quartz and the hydrated iron oxides. Manganese oxides also occur as accessory minerals. The outcrop area of the orebody is in excess of 2 square miles, displaying a complex pattern of faulting and folding, which has been formed as a result of at least two orogenic periods."

"Significant strides have been made during the past decade to integrate the traditionally separate administrative functions of financial management, materials management and maintenance management.In 1983, Key Lake Mining Corporation (KLMC) brought on-stream one of the most technologically advanced mining operations in North America. There was a requirement to support this new facility with state-of-the-art management information systems.This paper will discuss the development and evolution of the corporation's computerized information systems with specific emphasis on the utilization of computer systems to assist maintenance personnel in performing their work activities:Note: In August of 1989, the administration and operation of the Key Lake Mine was assumed by CAMECO - A Canadian Mining and Energy Corporation.IntroductionThe Key Lake Mining Corporation was incorporated in 1979 and operates a $500 million uranium mining and milling complex located in northern Saskatchewan.The feasibility study and environmental impact statements for the Key Lake Mine were submitted in 1979and in August of 1981, following a public inquiry, approval to proceed with construction was granted. Ore processing commenced in October of 1983 and during 1984 a total of 10.4 million pounds of uranium oxide (U3O8) was produced. In 1987, an annual production of 13.5 million pounds was achieved clearly establishing Key Lake Mining Corporation as the world's leading producer of uranium oxide. Current ore resources are expected to extend production of the Key Lake facility into the year 2000."

"The Canada/Nova Scotia Mineral Development Agreement (M.D.A.) is a subsidiary of a five-year Economic and Regional Development Agreement, signed on June 11, 1984. The objectives of the M.D.A. are to strengthen and diversify the Nova Scotian mineral industry and to coordinate federal and provincial policies and programs. The agreement outlines the activities and responsibilities of each government, including the division of the cost (60:40, federal: provincial) between governments. The agreement established a framework for joint planning to avoid overlap or duplication of programs.The M.D.A. programs are broadly divided into five sectors (Table 1 and Fig. 1): Geoscience, Minerals Technology, Development, Firm Specific and Public Information. Each sector is administered by a subcommittee composed of one federal member and one provincial member. The subcommittees report to a Management Committee. The Canada/Nova Scotia Mineral Development Agreement (M.D.A.) Management Committee is made up of Dr. Jack Reeves from EMR and Dr. Richard Potter from the NSDME.The Geoscience subcommittee, co-chaired by Peter Giles (NSDME) and William Poole (EMR), manages the regional geologic, geochemical and geophysical studies in the province. Included in this sector are studies into mineral deposits and the basic geological relationships between mineral deposits.The Mineral Technology sector is co-chaired by the authors, Don Doyle (CANMET) and Pat Hannon (NSDME). This sector of the M.D.A. conducts studies into mineral processing, sampling, deposit byproduct commodities and project feasibility analysis."

Plus spécifiquement, la présentation montre comment une quantité appropriée de ANFO et de TOVEX peut maximiser la quantilé de minerai cassé, minimiser les couts de sautage ou encore minimiser les coûts d'explosifs par tonne de roche cassée, en se basant sur une série de contraintes réalistes provenant de la mine.ABSTRACTA study, underway since 1987, tries to evaluate factors affecting mines' productivity. Information has been collected from seven underground mines in Quebec and this paper shows preliminary results from one. In particular, it shows how a combination of multiple regression analysis, mathematical programming and a set of realistic mine constraints can be used for a particular application of mine planning. More specifically, the paper shows a parallel between maximizing production of tons of broken are, minimizing explosives costs or minimizing the costs of explosives per ton of broken are by an appropriate selection of ANFO and TOVEX quantity of explosives. Finally, the paper shows that minimizing the costs of explosives per ton of broken are is the best alternative to follow providing a special optimization program can be set up."

"The Mt. Milligan porphyry copper-gold deposits are in central British Columbia, 155 km northwest of Prince George. Mineralized outcrops and float were discovered in the Mount Milligan area by prospecting. The most recent discoveries, which utilized lithogeochemistry, were in 1983. Areas containing the outcrops and float then were investigated by geological mapping, soil and lithogeochemical sampling, ground and airborne geophysical surveys, trenching and diamond drilling. This work led to the discovery of the Mt. Milligan Main deposit in 1987 and the Southern Star deposit in 1989. Extensive diamond drilling continued until 1991 and delineated a measured and indicated resource of 299 million tonnes grading 0.45 g/t Au and 0.22 % Cu from the combined deposits.The Mt. Milligan deposits lie within the Early Mesozoic Quesnel Terrane and are hosted by porphyritic monzonite stocks and adjacent volcanic rocks of the Takla Group. The Mt. Milligan Main deposit is centred around the MBX stock and Rainbow dike, and the Southern Star deposit around the Southern Star stock.Potassic alteration is extensive within the stocks and in volcanic rocks adjacent to the MBX stock and Rainbow dike. Propylitic alteration surrounds the potassic alteration and decreases in intensuy away from the stocks. Mineralization consists mostly of pyrite, chalcopyrite, lesser magnetite, and minor bornite, molybdenite and gold.Mineralogical zoning is well-developed within the deposits. A biotite-rich subzone forms the core of the potassic alteration zone and hosts most of the copper and gold. Numerous polymetallic veins lie within the propylitic alteration zone just beyond the limit of porphyry-style copper-gold mineralization."

It has the shape of a flat-lying lens 5 m to 30 m thick and shows a remarkable longitudinal and latera continuity from the information obtained to date. A well-defined bulge of the unconformity underlies the mineralized zone over its entire length.The deposit appears to be controlled by an east-west-trending structure within which a particular rock facies (""augen gneiss"") has developed in the graphitic metapelites of the Wollaston Group. It is surrounded by a strong alteration halo affecting both sandstone and basement, characterized by extensive development of Mg-A I rich clay minerals (illite-chlorite).The mineralization is hosted principally by the Athabasca sandstone, and consists mainly of uraninite and sulfo-arsenides of nickel and cobalt.Numerous geochemical and geophysical surveys have been carried out in the Cigar Lake area, and no specific geochemical or geophysical anomaly can be directly associated with the mineralized body, although there may be locally a good coincidence. "The Maurice Bay deposit, the Stewart Island showing, the Fond-du-Lac deposit, the Middle Lake showing and the Nisto deposit are located on the North Rim of the Athabasca Basin. They are probably unconformity-related. These occurrences tend to be small. The Fond-du-Lac and Maurice Bay deposits are the largest and contain 450,000 kg and 650,000 kg of U10 8 respectively.Pitchblende is the main uranium mineral of all the occurrences, except at Middle Lake where autunite predominates. A II of the deposits are overlain and partially hosted by the Manitou Falls Formation of the Athabasca Group, except the Nisto deposit which is entirely within basement rocks, and the Maurice Bay deposit which is partially within the basement and overlying the Fair Point Formation of the Athabasca Group.The North Rim deposits are considered to be genetically similar to the other unconformity-type deposits found in northern Saskatchewan. It is suggested that a mechanical concentration of uranium may have occurred in heavy mineral beach sand type placers. The stability of the uranium minerals may have been enhanced by special local conditions. The fossil placers, after hydrothermal alteration and enrichment, would form the apparently ""rootless"" occurrences of uranium found totally within the sandstones above the unconformity.IntroductionAt least five deposits and showings and one train of mineralized glacial erratics of unknown provenance have been located on the North Rim of the Athabasca Basin from Maurice Bay in the west to Black Lake in the east. Distributed over a distance of 250 km, (Fig. l), they occur near the edge of the Basin, and are probably unconformity-related. The following have been identified from west to east (Fig. 2): The Maurice Bay deposit, the Stewart Island showing, the Isle Brochet train, the Fond-du-Lac deposit, the Middle Lake showing, and the Nisto deposit."

Introduction The season of 1927, from the point of view of mining development in the area west of Rouyn, was quite satisfactory. Serious prospecting and development' were undertaken over quite a large area, though the results in the matter of discovering new deposits of economic importance were rather disappointing. A large amount of systematic prospecting and geological mapping was carried out in the course of the work, and a considerable body of information collected. A widespread occurrence of sulphide mineralization was noted, chiefly near bodies of older gabbro. The frequent occurrence of pyrrhotite in or near which local concentrations of chalcopyrite were localized, lends support to the idea that such older sulphides as pyrite and pyrrhotite are relatively easy of replacement by chalcopyrite. From the prospector's viewpoint, areas near the contacts of masses of older gabbro are favourable prospecting ground, and pyrite and pyrrhotite mineralization are favourable indications that massive chalcopyrite may be found where it has completely replaced such sulphides. Pyrrhotite being magnetic is easily located, even where drift covered, by the use of such convenient instruments as the dip-needle and the magnetometer. It is suggested that pyrrhotite bodies, when located, be thoroughly prospected because of the fairly strong probability that they may show replacement by the more valuable chalcopyrite.

"The Crescent, DM, and Pothook zones are copper-gold porphyry deposits which formed in association with alkalic intrusions of the early Jurassic Iron Mask batholith. The characteristics of the Crescent and DM deposits are nearly identical. Both formed along the contact between the Cherry Creek monzodiorite and Pothook diorite phases of the batholith. Permeable intrusion breccias along the contact concentrated the flow of hydrothermal fluids. Early, pre-ore alteration is represented by pervasive, sulphide-barren potassium metasomatism. The precipitation of copper-gold ore occurred during subsequent fracture-controlled potassic alteration, and is most strongly developed in chlorite-sulphide veins and their alteration envelopes. A central zone of potassic alteration is surrounded by a propylitic, pyritic halo in both deposits. The DM zone is unique among alkalic porphyry deposits in its high abundance of quartz-sulphide veins.The Pothook deposit formed at the westernmost contact of the Iron Mask batholith with enclosing Nicola Group volcanic rocks. Pervasive potassium metasomatism, similar in style to that at Crescent and DM, is associated with intrusion of the Cherry Creek monzonite. Pervasive and fracture-controlled albitic alteration is associated with intrusion of the Sugarloaf diorite and introduced minor copper-gold mineralization. Most of the copper-gold mineralization was introduced during formation of veins and breccia matrices dominated by magnetite/hematite and sulphide. Late-stage chlorite veining may have remobilized or introduced additional gold mineralization.Copper and gold assays in the Crescent deposit are well-correlated and have a nearly constant Cu:Au ratio, suggesting that the metals coprecipitated during a single hydrothermal event. In the Pothook deposit, copper and gold do not correlate closely, lack spatial correspondence, and suggest that transport and/or deposition of the two metals were not identically controlled and that they may have been introduced at different times by separate hydrothermal events."

The Thompson-Moak Lake nickel belt lies along the root of a Precambrian mountain range of the island-arc or alpine type. This range coin-. cides with the boundary between the Superior and Churchill blocks of the Canadian Precambrian shield. The nickeliferous peridotites and nickel ores occur along a negative gravity strip, which also coincides with strong thrust faulting and the axis of greatest deformation of the mountain range. Similar structures and highly nickeliferous peridotites occur in present-day island arcs. Much of the belt is covered by Paleozoic rocks, but a length of 270 miles may be explored by present-day methods. Nickel deposits have been located along 60 miles of the belt. The length of the favorable structure and the size of the known deposits suggest that this will be one of the world's major nickel regions. The regional gravity anomalies, which consist of a branching negative strip bordered by two positive strips, are best explained by major warps of a crust consisting of a granitic and basaltic layer. "Le rebroyage des concentrés d'hématite en usine (Sidbec-Normines, Port-Cartier) et en laboratoire a été modélisé selon le modèle de Reid (1965).L'effet du pourcentage solide sur la cinétique de broyage a été étudié en usine. La fonction de sélection corrigée (pour tenir compte de l'effet du pourcentage solide sur le temps de rétention) augmente lorsque le pourcentage solide augmente de 80 à 84 pourcent. Cette amélioration est contrebalancée par une augmentation de la quantité de pulpe court-circuitée, à des pourcentages solides supérieurs a 81%. Cette fragmentation poussée exige une consommation d'énergie de 32 kWh/tonne. Cette énergie est surtout libérée sous forme de chaleur, la pulpe étant déchargée a une température de 68-72° C. II en résulte un milieu de broyage corrosif, et une consommation de boulets élevée, de 3.4 à 4.0 kg / tonne broyée."

Gold leaching in thiosulfate solution has attracted widespread research interest through the last two decades primarily due to its perceived environmental benefits in comparison to the conventional gold cyanidation technique. However, the data on the corrosion and/or corrosion-induced failures of plant infrastructure materials in the solutions relevant to thiosulfate gold leaching are very limited. Accordingly, this study aims to characterize the electrochemical corrosion behavior of stainless steel 316L in the thiosulfate gold leaching solutions. Electrochemical corrosion response was investigated using potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The morphology of corroded specimens was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy.

"THE Mindamar zinc-lead-copper mine, owned by Mindamar Metals Corporation Limited, is at Stirling in Richmond County, near the south-eastern shore of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia (Figure I). It is connected by several roads with the Canadian National railway at Sydney and St. Peters.The deposit is said to have been discovered around 1895 as an outcrop in the bed of Copper brook, but the details are obscure. Not until 1925, when it was optioned by American Cyanamid Company, was it developed underground. Between 1927 and 1938, the 1-nine was operated intermittently by The British Metal Corporation (Canada) Limited, and yielded approximately 200,000 tons of ore averaging about IO per cent zinc, 2 per cent lead, I per cent copper, and small quantities of silver and gold. In December 1950, Dome Exploration (Canada) Limited made an agreement with Mindamar Metaî Corporation Limited, which was exploring the old mine, to assume management and prepare the property for production. Production started in April 1952 with a new mill and a new four-compartment shaft, and between that time and the end of 1954 it has totalled 545,347 tons of ore averaging 5·89 per cent zinc, 1·35 per cent lead, 0·66 per cent copper, 0·032 oz. gold, and 2 151 oz. silver.The Mindamar orebodies are irregular lenses and large veins lying within a wide, almost vertical shear zone of remarkable persistency. The shear zone consists mainly of well-foliated sericite schist derived from siliceous siltstone, and it contains a vast amount of dolomite and magne-site of hydrothermal origin. Most of the ore is extremely fine-grained and some of the high-grade material has a conspicuous thinly layered structure. The metallic minerals, in order of decreasing abundance, are pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena, and tennantite; the gangue minerals, in the same order, are dolomite and magnesite, quartz, sericite, talc, chlorite, barite, albite, and alunite.The geological setting of the deposit is shown in Figure 2. Except along streams and lake shores, almost all of the bedrock is concealed by glacial drift. The group of rocks in which the deposit occurs consists principally of greywacke, siltstone, tuff, brecoia, and Javas, and has been correlated lithologically with the Bourinot group of Middle Cambrian age. A short distance west of the mine, these rocks are in contact along the Stirling fault with conglomerate, arkosic sandstone, and quartzite belonging to the Middle River group of Silurian or Devonian (?) age, which elsewhere in the area overlies the Bourinot group unconformably. The large bodies of granitic rocks in the region, and the large lenticular masses of diorite and quartz diorite associated with them, have been assigned by Weeks (5, pp. 68-69) to the Devonian."
