Abstract - The Shaba-type Luamata Cu-Co(-Ni) deposit (11°50_S, 24°28_E) is located in a tectonic slice of Katangan Roan Supergroup (Mines Group) sedimentary rocks, surrounded by younger Kundelungu Supergroup lithologies in the external fold and thrust belt of the Lufilian Arc. Luamata is a classic central African copper clearing in dense woodland, visible as a tonal botanical anomaly on Landsat imagery. Supergene Cu-Co mineralization (especially malachite and subordinate chalcocite, digenite, covellite, and copper and cobalt oxides) and, probably hypogene, bornite, and chalcopyrite are hosted by altered, but essentially unmetamorphosed, moderately dipping, dolostones and dolomitic shales. Alteration products include talcose dolomite, sericite rocks and intense silicification and brecciation. Friable yellow shale is best mineralized with cobalt (up to 0.43 wt%), whereas, highest copper grades occur in brecciated, silicified shale (up to 13.5 wt% CuO). Soil copper and cobalt contents are up to 2.2 and 0.6 wt%, respectively. A newly identified nickel zone (where soil contents exceed 0.1 wt% Ni) fringes the Cu-Co deposit. Polymictic, matrix-supported breccias with a calcareous matrix that underlie the Cu-Co deposit are interpreted to be fluidization breccias related to thrust tectonics and the emplacement of the Mines Group slice. Although small compared to the Kolwezi district Shaba deposits in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Luamata exhibits all the classic features of an ore deposit type (with low calcite contents), whose high metal concentrations could potentially be very profitably exploited by low-cost opencast mining and hydrometallurgical recovery methods.

Vanadium mineralization occurs in oxide-rich horizons within layered metagabbro zones of the Sinarsuk deposit, West Greenland. The main oxide minerals are vanadiferous magnetite and ilmenite, comprising 30% to 90% of the rock volume and the ratio of magnetite to ilmenite ranges from 3:2 to 4:1. Ore microscopy shows that magnetite and ilmenite vary between 0.2 mm and 4.5 mm in grain size, but locally they are coarser grained. Grains are subhedral to euhedral and annealed suggesting that they will liberate very well upon grinding. Electron microprobe analyses indicate that magnetite grains are homogeneous and have a vanadium content, in different mineralized samples, ranging from 1.93 wt% to 2.68 wt% equivalent V2O5. Ilmenite hosts abundant and variably sized hematite lamellae, and it has vanadium contents ranging from 0.32 wt% to 0.59 wt% equivalent V2O5. Preliminary beneficiation of two composite bulk samples shows the samples can be beneficiated fairly easily using low-intensity magnetic separation at a coarse grind (106 microns to 600 microns) to yield a vanadiferous magnetite concentrate. The presence of hematite lamellae in ilmenite prevents recovery of a satisfactory ilmenite concentrate. The most likely beneficiation flowsheet would encompass a primary mill (SAG or rod mill), which would grind to about 600 microns, followed by a rougher magnetic separation stage. The rougher magnetic concentrate would be reground in a ball mill until suitable liberation is achieved. The reground material would then be cleaned in further LIMS stages. However, further laboratory testing is required to establish the final beneficiation program. This work demonstrates the value of mineralogical investigation in guiding and explaining the results of beneficiation processes.

The Alimak mining method was introduced at the David Bell mine in 1998 to extract an otherwise uneconomic and inaccessible reserve. The success associated with the extraction of these reserves led to major expansion of the method. To date, results have been extremely positive in terms of grade control, reduced dilution, stope recoveries, productivities and mining costs. It is hoped that through further development of the method at David Bell mine we will continue to see positive results in these areas and be able to increase mineable reserves to include proven resources that do not currently meet the criteria of our current stoping plan.

"The Buffalo gold deposit is a small deposit consisting of auriferous quartz-tourmaline veins within a granodiorite stock in the Red Lake greenstone belt. This study aims to characterize the mineralizing fluids through fluid inclusion and stable isotope analyses and to compare them with those of the world-class Campbell- Red Lake deposit. Four types of fluid inclusions were recognized, including carbonic, aqueous-carbonic, aqueous, and halite-bearing aqueous, with the carbonic type being the most abundant. Raman analyses indicate that the carbonic phase mainly consists of CO2, with minor amounts of N2 and CH4, and rarely detectable H2S. The homogenization temperatures of the carbonic inclusions range from -41.7° to 30.9°C. The homogenization temperatures and salinities of the aqueous, halite-bearing aqueous, and aqueous-carbonic inclusions are 130° to 276°C and 9.7 to 23.6 wt.% NaCl equiv., 155° to 207°C and 32.9 to 42.3 wt.% NaCl equiv., and 215° to 357°C and 8.3 to 19.7 wt.% NaCl equiv., respectively. The d18OVSMOW values of tourmaline range from 8.2‰ to 9.0‰, and those of quartz from 11.4‰ to 11.9‰, with estimated fluid temperatures from 323° to 399°C based on the quartz-tourmaline isotopic geothermometer. It is postulated that separate CO2-dominated and aqueous fluids intermittently invaded the fracture/vein system in response to fluid pressure fluctuations, with limited mixing. The CO2-dominated fluid, previously recognized in Campbell-Red Lake as the main mineralizing fluid, is inferred to have been derived from deeper parts of the crust. This deep CO2-dominated fluid reservoir might have been a common source for gold mineralization in the Red Lake greenstone belt. "The Main zone of the Clarence Stream gold deposit is hosted by a shear zone adjacent to the Saint George batholith in southwestern New Brunswick. The mineralization history relates to progressive deformation in the shear zone and the intrusion of the Magaguadavic granodiorite.Of three phases of deformation that have affected the area (D1-D3), D1 is not observed in the Clarence Stream shear zone. Two suites of igneous rocks intrude the shear zone: post-D2, pre-D3 gabbro; and granitic dikes, which crosscut the gabbros. Granitic dikes show a diverse range of relationships to D3 features, from pre-syn-D3 mylonitic fabrics in transposed and highly deformed enclaves, to nondeformed and entirely discordant dikes (post-D3).A variety of veins occur within this shear zone. Zoisite-bearing and later, crosscutting epidote-bearing veins are preserved as relics in quartz-mylonites, and predate quartz veins that host gold mineralization. The epidote-bearing veins are associated with pseudotachylitic cataclasite dikes, consistent with transient brittle failure during ductile deformation.Deformation relates to right-lateral strike-slip motion across the shear zone, and subhorizontal and near-vertical stretching lineations imply transpression. A late (late- or post-D3) dip-slip phase of motion is also apparent, and cooling followed a metamorphic peak early in D2-D3 history. Deformation of the shear zone, and more localized transient brittle failure, provided the permeability for fluid movement and vein emplacement. This scenario is similar to the findings of other studies, in which geochemical, tracer isotopic, and age-dating (U/Pb, 40Ar/39Ar) results suggest that the adjacent Magaguadavic granodiorite provided heat and metals. La zone principale (Main zone) du gisement d’or de Clarence Stream est encaissée par une zone de cisaillement qui longe le batholite de Saint George dans le sud-ouest du Nouveau Brunswick. L’historique de la mise en place de la minéralisation accorde un rôle important à la déformation progressive dans la zone de cisaillement et à la mise en place de la granodiorite de Magaguadavic.Des trois phases de déformation à avoir affecté la région (D1-D3), les effets de D1 ne sont pas observés dans la zone de cisaillement de Clarence Stream. Deux suites de roches ignées se sont mises en place dans cette zone de cisaillement : un gabbro post D2, pré-D3 et des dykes granitiques qui recoupent le gabbro. Les dykes granitiques montrent une grande diversité de relations avec les structures D3, allant de précoces à synchrones aux fabriques mylonitiques D3 dans des enclaves transportées et fortement déformées à des dykes complètement discordants et non déformés (post-D3).On note diverses veines dans cette zone de cisaillement. Des veines contenant de la zoisite ainsi que des veines d’épidote sécantes plus tardives, lesquelles sont préservées comme reliquats dans les mylonites à quartz et sont plus vieilles que les veines de quartz contenant la minéralisation aurifère. Les veines d’épidote sont associées à des dykes de catacalasite à texture de pseudotachylite, compatibles avec une rupture cassante épisodique durant la déformation ductile.La déformation résulte d’un mouvement décrochant dextre le long de la zone de cisaillement et les linéations d’étirement subhorizontales et quasi-verticales impliquent de la transpression. Une phase tardive (tardi- ou post-D3) de mouvement selon le pendage est aussi apparente, et le refroidissement succède à un pic métamorphique tôt dans l’histoire D2-D3. La déformation de la zone de cisaillement et la rupture cassante épisodique ont fourni la perméabilité nécessaire au mouvement des fluides et à la mise en place des veines. Ce scénario est similaire à celui proposé par d’autres études, dans lesquelles les résultats de géochimie, de traceurs isotopiques et de géochronologie (U/Pb, 40Ar/39Ar) suggèrent que la granodiorite de Magaguadavic avoisinante a fourni la chaleur et les métaux."

"Abstract - Enigmatic hydrothermal vein/breccia/replacement Cu-Au deposits with magnetite and/or hematite are well-represented in Australian 1850 Ma to 1500 Ma terrains and associated with different-aged synorogenic intrusions in the Tennant Creek Block (ca. 1850 Ma); the Gawler-Curnamona region (1640 Ma to 1590 Ma); and the Cloncurry district (Mount Isa Eastern Fold Belt, 1540 Ma to 1500 Ma with a possible earlier event at ca. 1600 Ma). No deposits are known to be coeval with various 1780 Ma to 1610 Ma anorogenic intrusions. Deposits are hosted by many different rock-types with varying metamorphic grade including granites and various supracrustal rocks. Depth of mineralization varied from many kilometers in semiductile crust (e.g., Cloncurry deposits) to very shallow (e.g., Olympic Dam). Ore deposition near Cloncurry occurred in brittle-ductile shear zones from geochemically variable and complex, CO2-rich, 300°C to 500°C, high salinity fluids with magmatic stable isotopic signatures. Recently published studies of a giant granitoid-hosted magnetite vein complex at the Lightning Creek prospect (>1000 Mt magnetite) suggest it is a product of internal differentiation and endogenous Fe and Cu-rich hydrous-carbonic fluid phase generation within a quartz monzodiorite-monzogranite intrusion. Coupled with other field relationships, this points to a possible genetic relationship with intermediate (55 to 65 wt% SiO2) members of an alkaline and partly shoshonitic granitoid supersuite which appears to have both mantle and crustal source components from ?Nd evidence. In constrast, main-phase mineralization at Olympic Dam in the Gawler Craton is distinguished by hematite-phyllosilicate alteration and chalcopyrite-bornite-chalcocite zoning, reflecting fluid mixing in a high level (<250°C) system with a probable large component of meteoric water. Early high-temperature parageneses and fluid inclusions imply that the extensive hematitic breccias overprinted an older magnetite system which may have had similarities with those at Lightning Creek and Ernest Henry in the Cloncurry district.Deposits of this family are inherently difficult to find and evaluate as even within a single district, there is no reliable relationship between the location of ore and any specific combination of geophysical characteristics. Diverse alteration assemblages, geochemistry and physical characteristics suggest the deposits reflect the interaction of multi-sourced fluids with different host rocks in a wide range of geological environments. Recent discoveries and research in the Cloncurry district have extended the range of deposit models available and aid the development of a rudimentary classification in which economic and exploration characteristics can be linked to variations in the mechanisms and environments of ore formation."

In order to achieve a production of 6960 tpd, ITH drilling at 400 psi (28 bar) was selected. ITH drilling at this pressure will be one of the first underground applications. This paper will discuss the anticipated gains and show some preliminary results. The use of the rod handler will also be discussed.

"Certain mining methods (eg. Cut-and-fill) result in the contamination of run-of-mine ore with shotcrete. This shotcrete remains mixed with the ore throughout processing. Experimentation performed by Falconbridge Limited revealed that underground contamination of ore by shotcrete (eg. as little as 1% by weight) has led to ill-effects on the nickel recoveries from the flotation process in the mill. The nickel recoveries of contaminated samples were lower than tests without the shotcrete Contamination.To optimize flotation circuits it is important to know why the contamination has created these effects and also to find a method to abate or remove them. Laboratory testing showed that the age of the shotcrete was a factor in it’s effect on nickel recoveries. Younger aged shotcrete gave nickel recoveries lower than baseline nickel recoveries with no contamination. Older shotcrete gave nickel recoveries similar to the baseline.Literature on other cementitious material contaminations on ore revealed that a possible means of remediating this problem is the use of acid in the flotation. The initial pH in the flotation pulp was designed to be pH 9.2, but with the young shotcrete contamination the pH was in the neighbourhood of 10.5. Acid addition may act as a means of lowering the pH to the optimal operational value. Laboratory test work showed that acid addition brought nickel recoveries closer to the baseline."

"INTRODUCTION The Holt-McDermott Mine is wholly-owned gold mining operation of American Barrick Resources Corp. that begun operations in June 1988.The property is located 0.5 km. south of Highway 101 East in the Harker-Holloway Townships of Northeastern Ontario, 7 miles south of Lake Abitibi and 15 miles west of the Quebec-Ontario border.Employees of the operation travel daily from various communities in the area, predominantly from Kirkland Lake, Ont., which is located 65 km. to the southwest.The significance of the operation is that it is the first full scale operation associated to the Oestor-Porcupine Fault to go into full production in recent history as well as the first Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) operation in the province owing to the natural occurring carbonaceous ores that are associated to the ore body and the geological fault systems.GEOLOGYThe Holt-McDermott deposit is located in the Abitibi Greenstone Belt, a short distance west of the Ontario-Quebec border. Ore grade material follows the footwall contact of a fault zone known locally as the McKenna Fault, which is thought to be a splay off of the Oestor-Porcupine Fault, itself a major feature in the Abitibi belt.The McKenna Fault strikes approximately east-west (as does the Oestor-Porcupine) and dips to the south at sixty-five to seventy degrees. The fault lies within a package of mafic volcanic rocks (basalts). These rocks have been strongly altered and mineralized adjacent to the McKenna Fault, and the resulting lens-like ore bodies constitute the mining targets."

In underground mining applications, successful blasting results in less damage, which may lower support costs, lower dilution and produce a uniform fragmentation. The explosive detonation process creates a pressure front that propagates a stress wave into the surrounding rock mass at a high velocity. The stress wave can induce varying degrees of damage, depending on rock strength and physical properties, to the excavated area. This paper presents a summary of a research project that was conducted to investigate the propagation of explosive-induced stress waves in hard rock media and the mechanism of rock damage and fracturing due to shock wave propagation. The primary objective of this work was to numerically simulate the experimental study of blast-induced rock fracturing conducted within Inco Limited, Mines Research department. ITASCA?s discontinuum code UDEC (Universal Distinct Element Code), was used to simulate the results of the controlled blasting experiments. In brief, the focal point of the paper can be summarized as follows: ? Investigate the size of the stress-wave-induced fractured zone around the blasthole, ? Examine the extent and direction of the radial fractures that form outside the blasthole, and ? Explore the mechanisms that cause rock breakage.

The Doyon Mine?s Zone 1 (Altered Zone), found along the southern boundary of the mine, encompasses approximately 20% of the mining reserves. The mineralisation is found in a series of steeply dipping narrow veinlets, which are contained in an extremely weak host rock: a sericitic schist with RQD values ranging from 0 to 20. Longhole mining methods are used, with either longitudinal or transverse approaches, depending on the width of the ore zone. Dilution is of critical importance in the mining of this zone, particularly in longitudinal stopes, where dilution levels have averaged 55% since 2000. Major factors influencing dilution in this zone include the stope geometry and standup time. A two-phase approach has been developed to mine and backfill longitudinal stopes: the top of the stope is pastefilled after approximately half of the broken ore has been extracted; the remainder of the ore is extracted once the plug has cured; and the remaining void is filled. This method has been used in six stopes to date, resulting in an average dilution of 17%. This paper details the application of this technique and its effect on dilution.

Geographically situated on the Porcupine-Destor Fault, the mine and mill in Stock township is positioned in the heart of Northeastern Ontario's goldmining communities.In July 1988, a 600 ft. shaft, hoist, and compressors were already in place when construction started on a 500 T.P.D. capacity C.I.P. mill and crushing plant.By June 15, 1989 the mill was commissioned and attained the design capacity by August of that same year. Barrick Gold recently implemented an oxygen roasting process to treat carbonaceous ore from its Goldstrike property in Nevada. One of the key project challenges was the design of the roaster gas cleaning system, which was driven by the requirements of a strict air permit and the need to achieve very high reliability. The roaster gas systems include multiple stages of wet particulate collection, a dual-alkali SO2 scrubber, mercury scrubbing, CO oxidation and NOx reduction. This paper describes the gas system, the influence of regulations on project implementation, and performance of the system.
