The CIM Mineral Exploration Best Practice Guidelines (the Exploration Guidelines) have been prepared to assist professional geoscientists and engineers to conduct consistently high-quality work in order to maintain public confidence. The Exploration Guidelines are meant to assist professional geoscientists and exploration practitioners in planning, supervising, and executing exploration programs. In Canada, there are generally two types of public resource reporting: “Disclosure”, as defined by NI 43-101, is the reporting of technical information to the public and market participants for securities legislation purposes where a Qualified Person (QP) must be involved, and reporting of exploration information for governmental agencies to support obligations under laws including the Mining Acts of each of the Provinces and Territories. The Exploration Guidelines are also relevant where the results will not be publicly reported but are intended for internal company use. While this document is intended as guidance for work conducted or supervised by geoscientists in Canada, many of the practices described herein can be adapted to mineral exploration activities in other countries. The Exploration Guidelines are not intended to inhibit original thinking, or to prevent the application of new approaches that may develop into fundamental components of successful mineral exploration programs. Rather than provide prescriptive solutions to specific issues, they include general guidelines for current professional practice and to demonstrate and defend the merits of new methods. These guidelines do not preclude individuals and companies from developing more detailed guidelines specific to their own requirements. The initial version of the Exploration Guidelines was prepared by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) Exploration Best Practices Committee and adopted by CIM Council on August 20, 2000. On January 9, 2018, CIM Council formed a new committee, the Mineral Resources and Reserves Committee (CIM MRMR Committee) with a mandate to, among other things, update the Exploration Best Practice Guidelines. The mandate for the committee was accepted by CIM Council on March 2, 2018. The new document was adopted by the CIM Council on November 23, 2018.

Chemical composition and the casting/rolling production routes determine the cost and properties of the wrought material. For example, the coarse-grained structure frequently associated with DC casting requires complex rolling schedules to refine the grain size. Hot forming (rolling/forging/extrusion) results in a strong crystallographic texture, which is responsible for the tension-compression strength asymmetry frequently exhibited by magnesium alloys. Understanding the influence of alloy composition on texture evolution during forming provides useful practical information to optimize industrial hot-forming technologies for magnesium alloys. In this study, a series of Mg-based alloys containing varying combinations of Al, Rare Earths, Zn, Ca, and Sr were subjected to identical casting and extrusion processes in order to isolate the effects of alloy composition on texture evolution. Textures were measured by neutron diffraction at the NRC Canadian Neutron Beam Centre. The ability of neutrons to penetrate deeply into materials allowed information to be retrieved from all regions of the bulk specimens without destructive and time-consuming sectioning operations, thereby providing true bulk texture data. {1010} , (0002), {1011}, and {1012} pole figures were generated for all of the as-processed alloys, from which Orientation Density Functions were obtained. The were then used to reconstruct the pole figures and to extract semi-quantitative texture data showing how the (0002) and {1010} planes align themselves with respect to the extrusion axis. It was found that varying the concentration of aluminum (3-4 wt%) and Rare Earths (2-3 wt%) in AE alloys had a weak effect on texture development. All of the alloys showed similar magnesium extrusion textures, in which the (0002) poles align themselves preferentially with the extrusion axis. The substitution of Sr for Rare Earths also did not have a significant impact on texture development. On the other hand, while the presence of small amounts of Zn and Rare Earths did not have a strong effect on texture development, alloys with higher concentrations of these alloying additions (in combination) showed an enhanced tendency for the {1010} poles to align themselves with the extrusion axis. The addition of Ca also enhanced the alignment of the {1010} poles with the extrusion axis. These textures can complicate further processing and introduce a significant anisotropy that could influence creep properties.

Determining moisture content and rate of flow of a solid product make measurement and control of dryers unusually difficult. This paper de-scribes a method of accomplishing this with readily made air-temperature measurements. The system can cope with changes in feed moisture and feed rate. It does not measure solids temperature. The system's application to several typical rotary dryers is described, and control schemes using feedforward techniques are explained.

"The raw ores which are processed in mineral processing plants exhibit very strong variations of their physical and chemical properties. As a consequence, the performances of the comminution and separation processes vary greatly from time to time. Model-based control strategies improve the performance of the plant; however, they require some form of adaptation to cope with the variations of the are properties.This paper deals with the use of adaptive techniques for the control of mineral processes. It begins with a survey on adaptive control algorithms including parameters estimation aspects. Then several examples dealing with crushing, rod, ball, autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding, flotation , drying and calcination processes are reviewed.IntroductionThe operation of the various processes of mineral processing plants (crushing, grinding, flotation, dewatering, etc.) is generally controlled using empirically tuned regulators of constant structure, such as PID controllers. To improve the operation performance, mineral processors try to implement specifically designed controllers, i.e. controllers based on plant dynamic models. Most of the time, these techniques improve the control of the mineral processing installations. However, modelling is a complex procedure because of the problems of measurement and data management, specific to this industry, and because of the variations of the model parameters. In this context model-based control strategies do not always bring the expected improvements or are sometimes discarded and replaced by more conventional techniques .The sources of variation of the dynamic behaviour of mineral processing systems can be classified into three categories: (I) the inherent changes of the raw ore properties (composition, grindability, mineralogical texture, etc.); (2) the process tuning modifications (grinding media loads, number of hydrocyclones, slurry level in flotation cells, agitation speeds, etc.); (3) the feedrate variation of the ore, water, chemical reagents, etc. All these factors change the fundamental properties of the process dynamics such as the grinding or flotation rates and the residence time in the equipment. The simplified linear models which are used to describe the process dynamics are not able to track the complex behaviour of the mineral processing systems when the amplitude of the sources of variation are too large. The mismatch between the model and the plant behaviour is then frequently a cause of model-based controller failures."

As productivity in coal extraction demands increase in underground coal mines, the industry is faced with finding new ways to support production without jeopardising safety. In modern mines the capacity and scale of longwall coal extraction has steadily increased to a point that support processes are failing to keep pace. In particular, roadway development is continually placed on the critical path of activities which maintain mine production, so any inefficiency in this area is quickly exposed. Original equipment manufacturers are under immense pressure to modify their machines to be more interconnected with each other, with machine communication and logistical sharing of space becoming a known requirement. This paper looks at the changing trends in mining practice, analysing available technology as well as currently emerging research into hard automation and discusses the need to integrate machinery and processes in order to see increases in productivity and safety.

New approaches for the fire refining process of blister copper have been carried out at the Codelco Norte Smelter. These have been mainly focused on modification and improvement of the process configuration based in fluid-dynamic and metallurgical studies of the oxidation and impurity treatment stages. This paper presents the results of the laboratory simulations and industrial tests performed in the 250 t anode furnace, evaluating two different process configurations: ? Bottom Bath Agitation System in the vessel during the oxidation stage, ? Dual Flux Injection System during the impurity treatment stage. The results show the possibilities of effective removal of high content of sulfur from the melt during the oxidation stage by using the bottom bath agitation. The use of the dual injection system demonstrated the significant improvement in the removal efficiency of impurities. Cu2007

"AbstractA resumé of aerial radiation survey studies performed by and for Eldorado Mining and Refining, Limited, since 1943 is presented. Flight tests were initiated in 1947 and were followed .by intensified use and study of Geiger counters and other radiation detectors. Development of an aerial scintillation counter began in 1948, but •a sensitive large crystal unit was not available for exploration purposes until 1950. Modifications of this unit have been used in all subsequent surveys.For the Eldorado detector, several limiting conditions were established for successful radioactivity detection, the most important being that natural vein exposures can only be assuredly detected .at distances less than 150 feet. Sedimentary and pegmatitic radioactive occurrences can be detected at much greater distances. A helicopter investigation technique appears to •have •a useful prospecting potential.IntroductionAerial radiation surveys were first proposed in the early 1940's. However, it was not until 1949 that airborne detectors were extensively used in the search for radioactive minerals. Eldorado has flown about 50,000 miles of exploration flights, exclusive of tests, using a variety of •detectors and aircraft. Considerable data have •been gathered for .the evaluation of the several techniques employed. Much of the early work was performed with the co-operation of the National Research Council of Canada ( 1). More recent work was done in conjunction with the Commercial Products Division of Atomic Energy of Canada, Limited. The Development Department of this latter corporation designed and built the scintillation counter used in recent Eldorado surveys."

Continuous laboratory solvent extraction of gold from cyanide solutions using LIX?79 guanidine based extractant has been investigated. Different variables that affected the selectivity and extraction include aqueous pH, extractant concentration, and modifier concentration. The extraction isotherms of the aurocyanide complex with respect to the other cyano anions were compared, and the following order of selectivity Au > Ag > Zn > Cu > Fe was observed. According to the pH isotherms, aurocyanide can be extracted in an alkaline media, and a better separation with respect to the other cyanoanions was obtained in the pH range 10.5-11.2. From the McCabe Thiele diagrams, better recovery was predicted when using LIX?79 extractant and tridecanol modifier at 10 vol.%. Stripping of the gold from the loaded organic was carried out at pH > 12 using NaOH and NaCN solution. The continuous tests indicate that a two-stage extraction followed by a single stage strip is adequate to obtain an overall process efficiency of >90%. Better results were obtained using a copper wash stage before gold stripping.

"This paper presents the use of queuing theory in truck fleet sizing in open pit mining operations. In the first part, a methodology is developed by which an optimal ratio between the size of shovels and trucks may be determined. The second part gives the fundamentals of the queuing theory and its application in analyzing shovel and trucks. The stochastic character of involved times (loading, truck cycle, etc.) is taken into consideration. Using the above theory, the optimal truck fleet size in actual conditions may be estimated. Minimal operating cost of the working system (shovelstrucks) represents the basic requirement of the analyzed process. The methodology was validated on Caterpillar front-shovel – truck combinations. Lithium is an alkali metal found in brine deposits in the United States, Chile and Argentina, as well as in hard rock deposits in Australia and North America. In hard rock deposits, spodumene (LiAl(Si2O6)) is the major economic lithium bearing mineral. Spodumene is typically upgraded through a combination of dense media separation, flotation and magnetic separation. One of the major spodumene concentrate quality specifications is the iron oxide content because it will help determine if the concentrate is considered ceramic grade for use in ceramics and glass or chemical grade for use in lithium ion batteries. The rejection of iron bearing silicate minerals from artificial ore composites (high amphibole and low amphibole, high quartz/feldspar) from a hard-rock spodumene deposit was investigated using magnetic separation and flotation. The efficacy of Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS) in iron rejection was found to be dependent on the mineralogy of the iron-bearing silicate minerals including modal distribution, liberation and association. When magnetic separation was conducted prior to flotation, the Fe2O3 grade in the final flotation spodumene concentrate was reduced from ~3% to ~1% Fe2O3 , and improved lithium recovery in flotation was observed. It was determined that it was most effective to conduct WHIMS on the flotation feed after scrubbing and de-sliming because this reduced the required magnetic field to recover iron-bearing minerals, likely because slime coating was greatly reduced. Flotation collector screening of four different collectors with varying rosin acid content demonstrated a potential increase in selective flotation of spodumene over some iron silicate minerals with decreasing rosin acid content in the fatty acid collector. However, due to marginal difference in flotation results with the various collectors tested, further testing is required to confirm the observations made and establish a hypothesis regarding the effect of rosin acid content.

Advanced high temperature electrochemical systems such as fuel cells, electrolyzers and ionic transport membranes are currently being developed for a wide variety of energy conversion, storage and gas cleanup applications. These systems offer high electrical efficiency, multi fuel capability, modular construction, no/negligible emissions (SOx, NOx, VOC, particulate matters) with capability to sequester green house gas emissions (GHG). Electrochemical processes and electrode reactions will be discussed. Cell and stack component materials and fabrication processes will be presented. Bulk, surface and interface degradation processes responsible for cell and stack performance degradation will be examined.

"Abstract - The Boston deposit is a recently discovered Archean lode-gold deposit located approximately 700 km northeast of Yellowknife, in the southern portion of the Hope Bay volcanic belt. Primary H2O-CO2-NaCl fluid inclusions associated with gold mineralization at Boston are of low salinity (4.6 ± 1.4 eq. wt.% NaCl, n = 182) and contain pure CO2. Homogenization temperatures of liquid-phase inclusions average 270° ± 33°C (n = 141), but some fluid inclusion assemblages contain coexisting liquid- and vapor-phase inclusions that homogenize near critical conditions, suggesting phase separation. In these groups, liquid-phase inclusions homogenized at 299° ± 25°C (n = 24), and vapor-phase inclusions homogenized at 338° ± 28°C (n = 18). These temperatures overlap within error, and a median temperature of ~320°C is taken as representative of trapping conditions within the veins. An approximate pressure of 2-3 kbar was estimated from fluid inclusion isochores at this temperature. Stable isotopic compositions of carbonate minerals from the mineralized zones range from -4.7‰ to -3.1‰ in d13C, and from 11.2‰ to 12.8‰ in d18O; quartz ranges from d18O = 12.8‰ to 14.9‰; and pyrite ranges from d34S = 2.1‰ to 3.5‰. The d18OH2O, d13CCO2, and d34SH2S values of the fluid calculated from these minerals at 320°C are 6‰-9‰, -2.4‰ ± 0.6‰, and 1.5‰ ± 0.5‰, respectively, and are intermediate between metamorphic and magmatic compositions. A unique source for the fluids cannot, therefore, be constrained from these data. Petrographic and geochemical data for the Boston deposit are consistent with data from other Archean lode-gold deposits worldwide, implying that the Boston deposit formed in a similar environment and from similar types of fluids. These results suggest that the Hope Bay volcanic belt may represent a major new mesothermal gold belt in this part of Nunavut. UrbanGold and its partners from Mettop and SMS group have developed a novel technology for the recovery of valuables from all non-ferrous metals’ fractions of WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment), with a special focus on low qualities which are commonly landfilled or incinerated. The technology is marketed under the brand name “UrbanGold Flex” to illustrate the high flexibility in respect of plant design and raw material portfolio, allowing also the processing of low grade material and materials with high caloric values. The process of the technology’s centrepiece, a modified and enhanced bath smelting furnace called “HENRI”, was investigated in numerous pyrometallurgical trials as basis for a scale-up towards a capacity of up to 100,000 tons of WEEE-concentrates per year. All relevant facility components have been evaluated in respect of references, fall-back options, as well as exit strategies (alternatives) to minimize risks when establishing a novel technology. A spin-off within the development is the “UrbanGold Compact” technology which can be seen as optimization of state-of-the-art smelters by using an optimized TBRC as primary processing unit. As an UrbanGold Compact plant will be the first industrial scale reference of UrbanGold’s technologies, it is also explained in the publication. As precious metals recovery is of major (economical) importance when recycling WEEE, major attention has been given to minimize the losses of these valuables. These measures, as well as a sophisticated way of utilizing waste heat as far as possible, result in interesting business cases with gross profits of up to 20% or even more. INTRODUCTION Over the past years, the demand of electrical and electronic equipment has increased dramatically with technological progress. Innovations on the technology of electronic devices led to a shorter usage and lifespan and thus boosted the generation of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). WEEE is one of the fastest growing waste streams, growing at 3 to 4% per year worldwide and is expected to reach more than 52 million tons per year by 2021. Currently, about 45 Mt of these wastes are estimated to arise worldwide, and the trend is rising (Baldé et al., 2017).

In the copper electrowinning process, short-circuiting between the anodes and the cathodes is a critical problem that changes the current allocation among local electrodes and reduces the current efficiency significantly. Possible reasons for the short-circuiting include the improper alignment of the electrode, bent electrode, and nodules on the cathode surface. In typical tankhouses, there is often a time between shorting and harvesting as well as between shorting and clearing. Therefore, it is inevitable to have short-circuiting affect the operation performance in practical electrowinning operations. However, one key piece of missing data is the actual measurements of the current efficiency as short-circuiting is approached and allowed to continue. Consequently, short-circuiting tests that allow tracking of electrowinning parameters before and after short-circuiting were performed in a laboratory scale Cu electrowinning cell. In the tests, the electrode spacing change, the mass of electrodeposited Cu, the deposition morphology, and the current allocation as well as the current efficiency before and after short-circuiting were studied. Results show that the short- circuiting affects the current allocation and the current efficiency significantly. Moreover, it changes the Cu deposition on the short-circuited cathode and therefore causes problems for Cu electrowinning. INTRODUCTION Electrowinning (EW) is commonly used for copper production around the world, with a rated production from 120,000 to 200,000 tons per year per operation (Wiechmann, Aqueveque, Henríquez, Muñoz, & Morales, 2014). In Cu electrowinning, Cu ions in the electrolyte are reduced on the cathode surface as metallic copper with a DC current, while on the anode, a counter anodic reaction occurs with oxygen gas generation (Werner, Zeng, Free, Zhang, & Cho, 2018; Zhang, Werner, & Free, 2018; Zhang, Werner, & Free, 2018). In copper electrowinning, an average current density of 200 to 400 A/m2 is applied to the electrowinning cell (Wiechmann et al., 2014). As the Cu deposits on the cathode, the distance between anode and cathode reduces and most of the time, short-circuiting forms between some anodes and cathodes in a large tankhouse containing thousands of electrodes, reducing the current efficiency and increasing the energy consumption significantly. The current efficiency in well-run copper EW operations is typically above 90 %. Most of the unused current is wasted through short circuits, stray currents, and by-byproduct formation (Davenport, King, Schlesinger, & Biswas, 2002; Wiechmann, Vidal, Pagliero, & Gonzalez, 2002; Wiechmann, Morales, & Aqueveque, 2010). Usually, in the tankhouse, the short-circuiting increases the current in the involved cathode by up to 1500 A (Wiechmann et al., 2010). Multiple reasons can cause the short-circuiting in the cell, and the most common reasons include the uneven current distribution among cathodes, tilted electrodes, bent electrodes, and nodules formed due to the large deposition roughness. Recognition of this challenge in the Cu electrowinning process has led researchers to perform many investigations on approaches to avoid and reduce the short-circuiting in the cell. A series of research investigations have been conducted to develop and improve a new type of intercell bar for Cu electrowinning (Wiechmann et al., 2002; Wiechmann, Morales, Aqueveque, & Burgos, 2007; Wiechmann, Morales, & Aqueveque, 2009; Wiechmann et al., 2010; Wiechmann et al., 2014). The associated test results show that this new design limits the occurrence and magnitude of short circuits and allows operation at higher current densities. Sandoval, Clayton, Dominguez, Unger, and Robinson (2010) stated several keys to control short circuits, such as maintaining the straightness of the cathode, removing “edge hair” from the cathode starter, and maintaining electrode alignment in the cell. Prengaman and Siegmund (1999) from RSR technologies developed a new Pb-Ca-Sn anode to prevent the anode deformation, thereby reducing the short-circuiting in the Cu electrowinning cell. Although the negative effects of short-circuiting on the Cu electrowinning have been recognized, and various investigations have been conducted to address this issue, the actual measurements of the electrowinning behavior and performance as short-circuiting is approached and allowed to continue are seldom reported. However, in typical tankhouses, there is a time between when shorting occurs and harvesting/clearing are performed. One key factor in determining the harvest time is the frequency of shorting. Consequently, we have performed short-circuiting tests that allow us to track electrowinning parameters before and after short-circuiting.

"The Nova Scotia Department of Mines and Energy located a drillhole at Riverside Corner, Hants County, Nova Scotia, to examine the stratigraphy, structure and potash potential of the Kennetcook River gravity low. This evaporite-related gravity anomaly is one of the largest virtually unexplored gravity anomalies in Nova Scotia. The drillhole intersected a structurally complex sequence o flower Windsor Group ('B' Subzone) evaporites. Downhole geophysical wireline logs were used, in conjunction with detailed lithological descriptions, to interpret the structure and stratigraphy of the sequence. Similar application of total gamma ray, density, caliper and neutron-neutron log responses allows stratigraphic correlation of Windsor Group carbonate marker units separated by up to 35 km in Cape Breton. This work confirms the value of downhole geophysical logs as a tool in the exploration of evaporite deposits regardless of the presence or absence of high quality core. INTRODUCTIONThe exploration methodology for evaporite (specifically salt/potash) deposits in eastern Canada (and worldwide) is relatively simple: identify a negative gravity anomaly within a favourable geological setting, Windsor/Cordroy Group sediments in eastern Canada, and drill it (Anderle, 1980). Although this is an obvious oversimplification of the necessary expertise in the planning and complet ion of an exploration program, those familiar with potash exploration drilling can attest to the risks and expense, in terms of time and problems , associated with the location and drilling of diamond-drill wildcat holes. Potash exploration programs in eastern Canada, their results and inherent difficulties, have been documented by Anderle et al. (1979), Cooper (1981), Dekker (1982), Carter and Boehner (1986), Carter (1988) and Carter and Anderle (in prep .).Downhole geophysical wireline logs have become an important tool in the stratigraphic and structural interpretation of evaporite sequences in eastern Canada and, in many cases, represent the only information recovered or the only information available due to the drilling method (rotary) and/or the long term instability of evaporite cores. This paper documents examples of downhole geophysical log responses which, combined with detailed lithological examination of drill core, or in the absence of core, are used in the interpretation of the complex lithology and structure of a deformed evaporite deposit. Geological and geophysical data from the Nova Scotia Department of Mines and Energy (NSDME) Riverside Corner 85-1 drillhole are presented here as a partial case history and prime example of the use of this method to interpret the complex structure of an evaporite deposit. Drilling of NSDME Riverside Comer 85-1 was conducted in late 1985and early 1986by the Department (Carter and Boehner, 1986) under a program to assess the potash potential of selected areas of the province as part of the Canada-Nova Scotia Mineral Development Agreement 1985-89. A reinterpretation of a portion of the available data from two exploration drilling projects on Cape Breton Island in the Canso-Bras d'Or area is also presented (see inset, Fig. I). Several drillholes have intersected the Windsor Group evaporite sequence in these areas and the available geophysical logs are a valuable tool in the interpretation of the structure of the deposits. However, no attempt has been made to present or discuss the detailed geological investigation and comparison of these two deposits. They are presented here as an example of the reinterpretation of existing data and their application to stratigraphic correlation and structural interpretation of complex evaporite deposits. Further work is necessary to document the stratigraphic and structural correlation of these two areas."

If fuel cells and hydrogen are to become a mass market reality a substantial amount of further research and development needs to be undertaken. Work in hydrogen storage, production, the economics of all aspects of fuel cells and hydrogen, materials balances, and product integration are just a few of the areas that are under focus. Setting R&D targets, and providing R&D funding are therefore areas that are central to the long term development of the market, and areas in which a number of governments worldwide are highly active. Some governments, such as Japan and Korea, have set a number of very ambitious, highly focused, long term targets and are backing this up with substantial funding, others such as the EU are working on a more integrated approach, wrapping some fairly fundamental R&D into large integrated projects which run in combination with a number of other market aspects, such as public acceptance and roadmapping. The US is slightly different, in that although is has a number of long term programmes and targets, FreedomCar and SuperGen being just two, the levels of funding are set annually with the passing of each years Fiscal Budget. This paper takes three high profile regions and analyses the R&D targets and funding levels for fuel cells and hydrogen. Criteria that will be looked at include: Time frame of target(s), level of ambition, funding issues, including: Funding windows, levels available, funding barriers, overall programme goals. The added value to this paper is that it will provide a clearer picture of where each region is heading, what are its strengths and weaknesses, in terms of R&D and where there may be areas for potential international collaboration.

"Precious metals (PM) in copper anode slimes are traditionally recovered by pyrometallurgical processes. Due to the compliance with increasingly stringent environmental regulations, it has made hydrometallurgical processing an attractive method for recovery of precious metals, including relatively inert metals such as gold and platinum group metals (PGMs). In this paper, a new method to recover PGM from complex and difficult feed streams is described. Fully hydrometallurgical processes for extraction and recovery of gold and silver from copper anode slimes were employed in major copper refineries since 1995, which was first developed at Rio Tinto Kennecott Utah Copper.In Rio Tinto KUC process, the wet chlorination and gold solvent extraction were utilized to enable recovery of gold and silver as well as other metal compounds. The availability of water and the interaction and amenability of gold processing in water-based solution makes it possible that gold and silver are produced in only five days, compared with a traditional pyrometallurgical process that took 45 days. Most copper refineries are still following the tradition, but the use of hydrometallurgical technologies is increasing as the world demand for metals increases, energy utilization, and environmental viability."

"Ammonium thiosulphate is a potential replacement for the cyanide in gold leaching. However, the high reagent consumption hinders its practical applications. In order to reduce the thiosulphate consumption, chemical additives were used. The gold leaching tests were conducted on a sulphide copper-bearing gold ore with 0.3M thiosulphate, 0.03M copper sulphate and 3M ammonium hydroxide solution at 44% solids and pH 10.2. Sulphate, sulphite, amino acid and chelating agents were initially used as additives. It was found that chelating agents (EDTA and NTA) could reduce the thiosulphate consumption from 30 kg/t to 17.8 kg/t with some increase of gold extraction. The improvement from other additives was not significant. Other approaches were also attempted to reduce thiosulphate consumption with some success. The thiosulphate consumption could be reduced to about 17 kg/t by reducing copper sulphate concentration fiom 0.03M to 0.0015M; adding 0.04M of EDTA; replacing copper sulphate with 0.001M of nickel sulphate. The increase of pulp density fkom 44% to 60% solids could reduce the thiosulphate consumption to 17 kg/t as well. Limiting the dissolved oxygen content by sparging nitrogen reduced the thiosulphate consumption further to 10 kg/t. It could be concluded that the regulations of copper and oxygen supply in the lixiviant were the keys to reduce the reagent consumption.INTRODUCTIONCyanidation, as the predominant gold leaching method, has been used in mining industry for more than a century. The low reagent requirement and the high performance are the reasons for its great success. However, cyanidation cannot deal with ores containing large amount of copper, nickel, arsenic and zinc minerals. This type of ore may consume more reagents and result in a poor gold extraction. On the other hand, the carbonaceous materials may preg-rob the gold from pregnant solution and make cyanidation a problem leaching method. Further more, the high toxicity of cyanide represents another challenge to modern gold mines. In the beginning of the year 2000, an environmental disaster caused by an accidental spill in Yugoslavia was broadcasted world-widely (Gurevitch 2000). Gold mine operators are facing higher social pressures and increasing costs on environmental protections. The usage of cyanide in mining industry has been banned in some countries and locations such as Czech Republic, Japan, Turkey, California, Colorado, Wisconsin and Montana States. Thus, a non-cyanide lixiviant is required."

"Aerial surveys of the open pits have been conducted regularly at Lake Asbestos of Quebec, Ltd. -a subsidiary of American Smelting and Re-fining Company -since 1958. Ground controls are supplied by Lake Asbestos, and a topographic map of the pits at a scale of 1 in. to 50 ft., with 2-foot contour intervals, is obtained by aerial photography. The information from the topographic map is then transferred by the Lake Asbestos engineering staff to sections from which the volumes removed are calculated. Considering the size and complexity of the operation, this system has proved to be the cheapest, fastest and most accurate way of determining the quantities of rock and overburden removed. More than 11,000,000 tons of ore and waste are mined each year in three different pits. Further-more, the nature, shape and extent of the orebodies make it necessary to mine on many (up to eight) benches of a pit during a single year. In addition, there are sections of the pits where it is impossible or un-safe to survey the crest of some benches by standard ground methods. For these reasons, the tonnages obtained by truck count are checked and adjusted by aerial survey. These surveys are now taking place every six months. With this system, it is possible for a two-man surveying crew to look after all field work in the mine area."
