The Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan and Alberta is an exceptionally rich metallogenic region, hosting more than 2.8 B lb U3O8, of which over 927 M lb U3O8 have been mined out since extraction first started in the late 1970’s. A detailed compilation of several empirical features of 85 deposits located within the basin was conducted in order to understand the distribution and variability of the geological characteristics of the mineralization and its associated alteration. A new empirical classification was devised based on four parameters: 1) geometry of the mineralization (dimensions and relation to the unconformity surface), 2) size, grade and metallurgical complexity of the mineralization, 3) lithostructural setting, and 4) extent and nature of associated alteration haloes. This compilation defines the footprint characteristics of the Athabasca Basin deposits, which guides decision-making processes from early exploration and discovery to resource expansion and extraction.

Hydrothermal systems form on land where and when an impermeable cap-rock unit ( either natural or self-sealed) , a permeable aquifer. and permeable discharge and recharge channels (cross-stratal permeability) develop in an anomalously hot part of the crust. A consideration of the relationship between magmatic and tectonic events in volcanically active areas indicates these conditions arise during: (1) the resurgent doming stage of the resurgent caldera cycle; (2) following movement on the bounding faults of tilted fault blocks ; and (3) as a result of hydrothermal boring associated with the intrusion of major sills. On the assumption that the submarine hydrothermal systems which deposit volcanogenic massive sulphide ores are comparable to subaerial hydrothermal systems, it is suggested that: (1) the horizon of mineralization corresponds to the time period when conditions favour the development of hydrothermal systems, as outlined above; (2) exploration for Cu-rich Cu-Zn-Pb or Cu-Zn ores should be directed to paletopographically high areas near discharge conduits , whereas exploration for Cu-poor ZnPb ores should concentrate on paleotopographically low areas down slope from conduits; (3) deposits with stringer zones lying above normally permeable units may be underlain by regionally extensive weakly mineralized and altered zones (self-seal caps) ; (4.) in the absence of a self -sealed cap, the ore horizon may be underlain by a naturally impermeable unit (e .g. a fine clastic sediment) ; (5) the condition of cross-stratal permeability may be evidenced by features such as dykes. alignment of vari ous magmatic and hydrothermal phenomena, abrupt thickness changes in stratiform units indicative of ponding against syn-volcanic faults, and fault-scarp slump deposits; (6) the condition of high heat flow may be evidenced by near-surface magmatism and steep thermal gradients preserved in metamorphic mineral assemblages.

"The accuracy of a measurement on minerals and ores can be assured by applying suitable and unbiased procedures but its precision is a function of the number of primary increments and their mass, the number of lots per consignment or samples per shift, and the number of measurements on analysis fine samples.Experimental data will be used to show how the variance components for sampling, sample preparation and analysis contribute to the total variance on which precision statements for the final measurement are based. This type of experiment should not only form part of quality control programs at mines and smelters, but also underly the criteria on which the design of manual sampling regimes and mechanical sampling systems for bulk solids and slurries should be based.Sampling systems and regimes can only be adjusted and optimized if the variance component for each step in a quality evaluation process is measured. Knowledge of precision characteristics lies at the core of effective loss prevention and control programs."

"Waste recycling is one of the most important challenges of the XXI century. The recycling of wastes is closely related to and bases on the mineral processing. Many mineral processing techniques and equipment are applied in this field. The principles of the characterisation of wastes and design of technologies is rather similar to the classic mineral processing. Nevertheless, the diversity of the wastes and their complex composition and properties, as well as their environmental impact requires a special approach.Solar elements have sandwich structure of glass substrate and cover, as well as a very thin semiconductor layer. CdTe semi-conductor can be recycled by flotation. Within the RESOLVED (LIFE European Framework) R&D project on the recycling of solar elements the surface properties of pure CdTe semiconductor and pure glass were investigated by the measurements of zeta-potential using Zeta PALS Brookhaven instrument at University of Miskolc. Applied surfactants were: potassium ethyl xanthate; the anionic oxhydryl Aero Promoter 825 or Flotinor SM 35; the cationic Armoflote 43 or Armoflote 64, as well as Hostaflot LET (dithiophosphoric acid diethyl ester) and Hostaflot M91 (mercaptobenothiazole). The tested electrolyte was sodium-silicate. Zeta-measurements were carried out in full pH-range. Interfacial interactions were detected and interpreted. The basic results were verified by the flotation kinetic tests.Finally, the flotation technological experiments were carried out at a semi-technical scale using the real obsolete solar elements. The particle size at the liberation degree of 98% was as fine as below 5 µm. A special flotation cell providing the generation and distribution of very fine air bubbles was built. The pre-concentrate for the manufacturing of the test solar module was performed and transported to the BAM Institute (Berlin), the principal co-ordinator of the Project, and then further to the First Solar (USA) where a new panel was manufactured using recycled semi-conductor."

"Airborne electromagnetic surveys were flown during 1965 in the Moose River area of Ontario. The systems used were INPUT Mark II and the Canadian Aero Otter. Anomalies indicated by both systems were located on the ground with vertical-loop EM. Two such anomalies were drilled, with no explanation being found in the bedrock geology. Subsequent seismic, resistivity and gravity surveys indicated that the sources of these anomalies lay in the overburden. Current work in the similar geological environment of the Winisk River area has shown that comparable AEM anomalies can still be misleading. The lesson to be, learned from these experiences is that additional geophysical work can help to resolve doubtful cases before drilling decisions are made."

"Pre-oxidation and cyanide leaching behavior of gold in the presence of sulfide minerals were reviewed, focused on the effects of oxygen injection in the gold leaching process. Generally, pre-oxidation and gold leaching kinetics from iron sulfide refractory minerals, such as pyrite, pyrrhotite, marcasite, pentlandite and arsenopyrite, can be enhanced with higher dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration. However, most of copper sulfide minerals dissolved well both in water and cyanide solutions, and copper from the minerals consumed DO and cyanide to oxidize and leach. Only in the presence of chalcopyrite, gold leaching was effectively occurred with increasing DO. However, chalcocite and covellite severely retarded gold leaching. Stibnite, an antimony mineral, formed a passive film on the gold surface under any DO conditions, and it slowed gold leaching. This impeding effect can be alleviated by leaching at low pH or adding lead salt. Using oxygen and lead together can make synergistic effect in oxidation of sulfide minerals and can enhance gold extraction. Depending on the mineralogical characteristics of the ore, the optimum DO and lead concentrations can be optimized. However, lead can cause environmental problems, and so its dosage should be minimized or eliminated by substituting it with oxygen injection.INTRODUCTIONGold ores containing sulfide minerals are becoming more significant as high grade gold oxide deposits are continuously becoming difficult to find. In light of this situation, to produce more gold, recovery methods from refractory gold ore containing various sulfide minerals should be investigated. Generally, sulfide minerals have impeding effects on gold leaching: formation of a passive film on the gold surface, high consumption of chemicalssuch as cyanide and oxygenduring leaching, reduction of gold cyanide by sulfide ions, etc. (Senanayake, 2008). Therefore, sulfides must be properly treated for better gold recovery. Pre-oxidation of sulfide minerals by injecting pure oxygen can decrease the impeding effects in gold leaching. Prior to cyanidation, sulfide minerals can be oxidized to metal hydroxide and sulfate form, which consume negligible cyanide in the following cyanidation circuit (Bodnaras et al., 1993). Moreover, gold cyanidation can be enhanced by increasing concentration of the dissolved oxygen (DO). In general, the optimum concentration ratio of [CN-]/[O2] is calculated as 6, but it goes higher in the real system (Marsden &House, 2006), which means that the reaction is typically controlled by DO concentration."

N. Jeffrey - Granisle Copper The main difference between the Granisle crushing plant and many others is the Livingstone method of putting the screens under the crushers instead of above them. This method allows a more compact arrangement and eliminates the heavy superstructure required to take care of the screen vibration when the screens are mounted above the crushers. There is a small surge bin above the tertiary crusher which takes care of the variation in circulating loads.All three crushers are gyratory crushers. There is no grizzly ahead of the primary crusher but the fines are removed from the primary crusher discharge at the first screen and sent directly to the fine ore bins. Introduction The development of uranium deposits is a relatively recent phase of mining in Canada. To date, the only producer of uranium ores on a commercial scale has been the Port Radium mine on Great Bear lake, N.W.T. However, with.-in the past few years intensive prospecting has been carried on throughout Canada and many occurrences of uranium-bearing minerals have been discovered. Eldorado has been active in the search for and the exploration of uranium deposits in Canada for a longer period than any other company and has, therefore, accumulated a considerable fund of information, especially about occurrences in Saskatchewan and in the Northwest Territories along the western fringe of the Precambrian Shield. The Company has also had experience in the underground operation, and in the mining, of uranium ores at Port Radium. During the past year or so many requests have been received from the prospecting and mining fraternity for information and guidance regarding the development of the many new uranium discoveries that have been made in Canada. Assistance by Eldorado is freely given whenever possible and this paper is presented to supplement the private discussions and to provide as wide a distribution as possible of the data acquired by Eldorado.

Experimental determination of the response of an AG/SAG mill treating two components of significantly different impact resistance is challenging for two main reasons: firstly, small scale laboratory tests have yet to be confirmed as valid representations of the full scale milling environment, and secondly pilot plant testing requires 10-20 tonnes of ore per scenario which precludes the use of drill core, rendering the process very expensive. In order to mitigate these difficulties, modelling was considered as a potential way forward. However, as the JKSimMet AG/SAG model currently has no capacity to simulate the interaction of two ore types with differing impact resistance, density and/or feed size distributions, an alternative modelling approach was developed. This approach aims to essentially calibrate the AG/SAG process under a set of given conditions, for which survey data and the ore properties of the main components in the feed blend already exist. This paper describes a new conceptual model, which provides a simplified approach for investigating the multi-component behaviour of two ores of differing hardness/SG in a given AG/SAG milling environment, and which can potentially be used for scale-up from laboratory/pilot testwork and geometallurgical estimation of throughput.

Black copper sludge, which mainly contains copper, arsenic and a little antimony, bismuth, selenium, tellurium, is an important recyclable secondary resource. In this paper, selective removal of arsenic from black copper sludge by alkaline oxidative pressure leaching was studied. The influences of alkali concentration, leaching time, leaching temperature, oxygen pressure, liquid-solid ratio and other variables on the leaching rate of arsenic, copper and tellurium were investigated. The results were as follows: when the leaching process was conducted at initial alkali concentration of 1mol/L, liquid-solid ratio of 10, stirring rate of 500r/min, leaching temperature of 140°C for 5 h and oxygen pressure of 2.5MPa, the leaching rates of arsenic and tellurium were 85.43% and 59.7% respectively, and copper, antimony, bismuth were not leached. Hence, arsenic has been removed effectively from black copper sludge, while the valuable metals such as copper, antimony and bismuth remained in the residue that can be further recovered easily. INTRODUCTION Black copper sludge is a byproduct in the purification process of copper electrolyte. Arsenic, antimony and bismuth are major harmful impurities in copper electrolytic refining system. The accumulation of these impurities will cause adverse effects, such as the increase of electrolyte resistance and power consumption and deterioration of cathode copper quality (Wang, Liu, & Zhang, 2001). Hence, electrolyte purification is an essential part of the electrolysis process (Liang, Chen, & Guo, 2009). Electrolyte purification methods include electrowinning (Davenport, King, Schlesinger, & Biswas, 2002), solvent extraction (Navarro, Simpson, & Alguacil, 1999), ion exchange (Arroyo et al., 2017), coprecipitation (Wang et al., 2003, 2018; Xiao et al., 2007; Xiao, Cao, Mao, Shen, & Ren, 2014), activated carbon adsorption (Navarro & Alguacil, 2002), electrodialysis (Cifuentes et al., 2015), redox process (Zhou, Peng, Zheng, Ma, & Cui, 2011; Peng, Zheng, Zhou, & Chen, 2012; Zheng, Peng, Ke, & Chen, 2013), among which the electrowinning method is simple in operation and effective in impurities removal, making it the main process for current electrolyte purification. Some copper ions can react with harmful impurities to form complex black copper sludge by controlling the operation conditions of electrowinning process. Based on the estimated data provide by Davenport et al. (2002), an annual output of 400,000 tons cathode copper could produce 432-2168 tons of black copper sludge by electrowinning method. Black copper sludge contains 30~50% copper, 15~30% arsenic and a small amount of rare elements such as selenium and tellurium. Thus, recovery of valuable metals can bring huge economic interests. Moreover, arsenic in these sludges could cause significant environmental pollution. Therefore, effective removal of arsenic from these sludges is urgent and significant.

Large seismic events have been reported in mines in the Sudbury mining camp for more than 70 years. Nevertheless, no detailed record of the events has been compiled. In 2008, the Sudbury Regional Seismic Network (SRSN) research project was initiated to collect more accurate data with regard to the magnitude and locations of mining-induced seismic events in and near the mines in the Sudbury Basin. The data is used to better understand the mechanisms of the events and cause-effect relations between mining and seismic events. Through the collection of a central database of large seismic events, new insight is being be gained into why some mines are much more prone to large events than others. Fifteen low cost seismic stations have been distributed throughout the Sudbury basin. The data from each seismic station is uploaded to a central server using the internet. Data recorded on the SRSN is processed on a daily basis, and a weekly summary of blasts and events is issued to project sponsors. Seismic events smaller than local magnitude +1.0 have been identified and located. Event location accuracy is less than 2 kilometres, however, many events have been located less than 1 km from a mine. The SRSN fills a seismic monitoring gap between the in-mine microseismic monitoring systems and the earthquake monitoring system operated by the Geological Survey of Canada. Since July 2008, more than 600 mine blasts and more than 450 mining-induced seismic events have been recorded in the Sudbury basin. This paper primarily discusses the technical aspects of the design and operation of the SRSN. The SRSN is a Canadian Mining Industry Research Organisation (CAMIRO) research project, with industry sponsorship and support from FNX Mining, Itasca Canada, Vale Inco and Xstrata Nickel.

Introduction The geology of the Cochen-our Willans gold mine has been described in reports by the late Dr. H. C. Horwood (1) in 1940 and by Dr. J. P. Nowlan (2) in 1947. Information from these and other (unpublished) reports has been incorporated in the present paper, together with some recent ideas regarding structural features which are at present being used to locate ore shoots. Location and History The mining claims of Cochenour Willans Gold Mines, Limited, occupy 705 acres in Dome township, on the east shore of Red lake opposite McKenzie island. Adjoining properties are those of McKenzie Red Lake Gold Mines on the west, Boymar Gold Mines on the north, Marcus Gold Mines on the east, and Martin-McNeely Gold Mines on the south. The claims of the original group were staked by W. M. Cochenour, Dan Willans, and H. G. Young, and the Cochenour Willans Syndicate was formed in 1928. Work was carried out by the Syndicate and several other companies during the next eight years with inconclusive results, due to the irregular occurrence of the ore. In 1936, Cochenour Willans Gold Mines, Limited, was incorporated and production was finally started late in 1939.

"Exploration for copper, in a region of 7,000 square miles on the Arctic coast between longitudes 114 and 118 degrees west, has covered a period of nearly 200 years. Occurrences of native copper, used by the natives for tools and weapons, have been reported since the early part of the eighteenth century. In J 771 Samuel Hearne of the Hudson's Bay Company, in the course of his classic 3-year journey from Fort Churchill, became the first white man to see the deposits, and incidentally the first to reach the Canadian Arctic coast by land. During the next 140 years the deposits were mentioned by every explorer and traveller who passed through the area. A good historical summary of this literature has been presented by Tyrrell (1912).In 1911-12 the Douglas-Sandberg party did the first geological mapping along the Coppermine River and Dismal Lakes (Douglas, J., 1913; Douglas, G. M., 1914), and described the copper occurrences there. In 1914 J. J. O'Neill (1924) of the Canadian Arctic Expedition investigated the showings on Bathurst Inlet. In 1929-31 two Canadian exploration companies sent prospectors and geologists to the area (Gilbert, 1931; Norrie, 1931; Duncan, 1931). Since that time only brief references have been published (Kidd, 1931; Stockwell and Kidd, 1931; Lord, 1941, 1951; Washburn, 1947). In 1943-45 an area of more than 1,500 square miles was prospected by American Metal Co. of Canada, Ltd., under the direction of the writer. Forty-nine showings were examined; seven of these were mapped in detail by plane-table and two were sampled by 27 short diamond drill holes totalling 3,061 feet. All holes were in permanently frozen rock, and the deepest vertical distance reached was 206 feet. Five groups of claims were staked. These later lapsed, but one of the groups was restaked in 1951, and assessment drilling and some trenching were carried out in 1952-53. Results were disappointing, and the claims have been allowed to lapse.The area is within the Arctic Circle, northeast of Great Bear Lake and 360 miles north of Yellowknife on Great Slave Lake. For exploration purposes, access is by aircraft from Yellowknife. During the short open season heavy freight can be brought by sea to Coppermine at the mouth of the river, either from Aklavik at the mouth of the Mackenzie or around Alaska. Concentrates would have to be moved by these routes.Although none of the deposits so far found is mineable under present conditions, the total volume of copper in the numerous showings marks the district as a major area of copper mineralization, which may some day be of economic importance."

"In natural world, some kinds of scheelite minerals are rich in molybdenum. Molybdenum exists in the crystal lattice of scheelite in the form of isomorphism, and the content of MoO3 varies from 2% to 10%. As a result, the flotability of seyrigite (scheelite with molybdenum) turns to be weaker. One seyrigite mine, which has been built for 3 years,still could not produce qualified seyrigite concentrate due to the weak flotability of seyrigite (Mo-bearing scheelite) in raw ore. In our experimental research, through adopting new seyrigite collector TA-3 and advanced mineral processing technology, the seyrigite concentrate with a grade of 65.62% WO3 at a recovery of 87.47% was obtained for the raw ore containing 0.19% WO3 and 0.074% Mo. By applying the new technical achievement, for the raw ore containing 0.272% WO3, the seyrigite concentrate assaying 68.03% WO3 with a recovery of 77.56% was obtained in industrial production.INTRODUCTIONIn natural world, some kinds of scheelite minerals are rich in molybdenum. Molybdenum exists in the crystal lattice of scheelite in the form of isomorphism, and the scheelite is changed to be seyrigite (Ca[(W,Mo)O4]) (Ma, Bian, & Wang, 2013). The content of MoO3 in seyrigite varies from 2% to 10% usually, the content of MoO3 in some of the seyrigite even reaches 34%. The flotability of seyrigite is weak (Zhang, 2007), and the seyrigite is difficult to be recovered by flotation with common collectors and regulators. One scheelite mine in Anhui China, which is a skarn type seyrigite mine, has not produced qualified concentrate yet since 3 years it has been built due to the limit of beneficiation technology. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research on the collectors with high efficiency and developing advanced processing flow for this kind of ore."

"Mineralogical evaluation of ores containing platinum-group elements (PGE) is fraught with difficulties because of the low grades (often 1-3 g/t PGE), dispersal of PGE (usually as finegrained platinum-group minerals [PGM]), as well as occurring in solid solution in some base metal sulphides (BMS) such as pentlandite and pyrrhotite. Mineral processors not only need to know how the PGE are distributed, that is, their mineralogical distribution, but the grain sizes of the PGM, and especially the associated minerals.After obtaining a representative ground sample, common approaches include studying a large number of polished or polished thin sections, concentration of the PGM and sulphides by different gravity methods (e.g., heavy liquids, elutriation, micro-panning) and study of the produced concentrates. Unfortunately, these methods often do not produce concentrations that are sufficiently representative of a particular ore. The newly developed patented technology of hydroseparation (Rudashevsky et al., 2002) is especially effective at making concentrations of PGM over a wide range of concentrations (down to <300 ppb Pt+Pd+Au) and size fractions, including <45µm (down to a few micrometres in size), a size range not possible by other techniques. This water-based environmentally friendly laboratory technique provides a large amount of data from samples, which can range from 5 to 1000g, giving confidence to extrapolation of results to bench-scale and larger test work, especially when combined with quantitative image analysis to determine modal percent of major minerals and mineral liberation data, needed to predict the minimum (K80) and optimum (K40) grinds. INTRODUCTIONThe invention of the electron microprobe in the early 1960’s and scanning electron microscopes (SEM) with energy dispersive spectrometers (EDS) in the 1970’s presented mineralogists with powerful tools permitting them to obtain chemical and surface area data on minute amounts of minerals in situ, in a non-destructive manner. An area of process mineralogy that has very much benefited from this new technology was the characterization and understanding of PGM species, resulting in rapid growth of newly characterized species (Figure 1). Recognition of the first PGM may be ascribed to the Spanish explorer Ulloa in 1748, who described native platinum from South America. The second PGM (laurite, RuS2) was only recognised in 1866 by Wöhler in placer samples from Borneo (now Kalimantan) and the third (sperrylite, PtAs2) by Wells in 1889 from the Sudbury Ni-Cu sulphide deposits. The discovery of the important Pt-Pd deposits in the Bushveld Igneous Complex led to the characterization of the important Pt-Pd sulphides (cooperite, PtS2 in 1928 and braggite, (Pt,Pd)S2 in 1932). By the early 1960’s, only about 20 PGM were recognised, and many later proved to be poorly or incompletely characterized. Thus, the introduction of electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) led to a 50% increase of known PGM, as shown in a 1972 review on PGM (Cabri, 1972). At the time of the next review in 1981 (Cabri, 1981) the number of known PGM had grown to 75 and as of 2002, it had increased to 109 (Cabri, 2002). However, it is the author’s experience that less than about 25 PGM may be considered to be “common”, i.e., found in many different deposit types, as shown in Table 1, but usually only some of these occur in any one particular deposit."

"The prevalent metal extraction processes for most reactive metals are fused salt electrolysis and metallothermic reduction. The feed material for both of these processes is the anhydrous chloride of the metal under consideration. Dehydration of the feed material is then a critical step in the production of most reactive metals and requires rigorous thermodynamic analysis. Thermodynamic data for most of the reactive metal chloride hydrates have not been measured. Improper dehydration of the metal chloride may lead to a prohibitive amount of hydroxychloride, oxychloride, and oxide. To prevent hydrolysis a certain pressure of hydrogen chloride is required. An estimation and prediction model is presented for the vapour pressures of reactive metal chloride hydrates in an attempt to deduce the conditions necessary for dehydration to proceed without hydrolysis. Thermodynamic data including heat capacities, standard entropies, and standard enthalpies are estimated/predicted for all conceivable intermediate hydrate compounds. Estimations are based on published data as well as trends proven in similar systems. The thermodynamic estimations and predictions are presented for the magnesium, neodymium, praseodymium, and dysprosium chloride hydrates. INTRODUCTIONThe high reactivity of metals such as the alkalis, alkaline earths, and lanthanides prevents their reduction by traditional pyro- or hydrometallurgy. In their elemental form, these metals are raw materials in the manufacture of intermediate products such as alloys and electronic components. Currently the only two viable metal production methods are fused salt electrolysis and metallothermic reduction. Various feed materials have been proposed for these processes. Using the chloride of the metal as a feed material offers advantages in separation and purity of the final product, as well as lower energy input. Chlorides, however, are hygroscopic and must be dehydrated before use. Improper dehydration will lead to a prohibitive amount of oxychloride which will lower efficiencies and contaminate the final product.Optimum conditions for proper dehydration of MgCl2•6H2O to produce pure MgCl2 without hydrolysis have been calculated from existent thermodynamic data and have been reported previously (Kipouros, 1987; 2001). Calculations were also performed for the case of production of pure anhydrous NdCl3 from NdCl3•6H2O (Roy, 1997)] and the mechanism of dehydration was elucidated. Some thermodynamic studies on the dehydration of chlorides of the rare earths have also been conducted (Sundstrom, 1997; Hong, 1997; Aschcroft, 1968; Haeseler, 1965; Ukraintseya, 1989)."

The inversion of rock mechanical properties based on well-logging data is a common method to drillbit selection in petroleum engineering, the basic principle of which is to use deep-well logging data and experimental regression model to calculate rock mechanical properties. The profile of rock mechanical properties can be established. According to the profile, the type of drillbit can be selected in different formations, which will improve the economic benefit of bit use indicators. Compressive strength of rock is one of the most important parameters. Conventional method to establish regression models of acoustic velocity and uniaxial compressive strength is on the basis of rock core sonic experiments and uniaxial compressive experiments. However, with the increase of deep drilling operation, triaxial compressive strength prediction model will play a more vital role in drillbit optimization selection in deep wells and improving ROP (Rate of Penetration). Triaxial compressive strength is an important parameter to evaluate the formation strength property. In this paper, to the sandstone commonly encountered in oil drilling, combined the rock mechanical experimental results with the changing porosity experimental results under confining pressure, a new interpretation model of triaxial compressive strength based on well logging data is proposed. Firstly, three types of sandstone samples are collected. Then measured components, uniaxial compressive strength, triaxial compressive strength and porosity. Experimental results show that: confining pressure has a significant influence on sandstone strength, with the increase of confining pressure, triaxial compressive strength increase; furthermore, the triaxial compressive strength of different porosity sandstones have different change rules when confining pressures changes; sandstone porosity decreases with the increase of confining pressure and it obeys logarithmic function. According to the results, regression models of sandstone, in-situ uniaxial compressive strength model and uniaxial compressive strength model under normal pressure are generated. Meanwhile, using well logging data in the acoustic velocity, density and gamma value can derive in-situ rock formations uniaxial compressive strength and in-situ porosity. Eventually, a new model established in this paper, containing in porosity, uniaxial compressive strength, lateral pressure and power exponent of regression, can predict triaxial compressive strength which will guide drillbit selection.

"It is very important to reveal the lime dissolution mechanism in steelmaking slag, to promote its dissolution without calcium fluoride, which is now almost forbidden for use in most industrialized countries. In this research, the purpose was focused on the development of an experimental method to measure the mutual diffusivity of Ca2+ under the condition of lime dissolution into slag. By forming diffusion couples using a ""vacuum slag aspirating technique"", the method was established. The following mutual diffusivities of Ca2+, in CaO-SiO2-FeO slag systems, imitating oxygen steelmaking slag, were determined using this method:4.1*10-10 m2/s at 1400°C for 27wt.%CaO-53wt.%SiO2-20wt.%FeO slag,4.3* 10-10 m2/s and at 1400°C for 20wt.%CaO-40wt.%SiO2-40wt.%FeO slag, and 1.3*10-10 m2/s at 1250°C for 20wt.%CaO-40wt.%SiO2-40wt.%FeO slag.It was also verified that, if the basicity and ferrite content of the bulk slag are low, then a calcium silicate film forms on the lime surface, and drastically deters the lime dissolution."

"IntroductionThe Maurice Bay deposit is one of a number of uranium deposits that have been found in recent years in the Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan (Tremblay, 1982). This deposit, along with the others, belongs to the unconformity type deposits (Beck, 1977). They are, for the most part, polymetallic, being characterized by a suite of metals which include U, Ni, Co, Cu, Pb, Zn, Mn, V, Ag, Au, Pt-group elements, S, As, Bi, Se, Te, and Mo, some of which, besides U, are present in economic concentrations (Amok, 1974; Ruzicka, 1975; Tapaninen, 1976; Hoeve and Sibbald, 1978; Dahlkamp, 1978). The Maurice Bay deposit was known to be a small low grade deposit in which the ore was essentially monomineralic, consisting mainly of pitchblende (Harper, 1978). However, the occurrence of trace amounts of some of the elements common in the larger polymetallic ore bodies (e.g. Key Lake, Cluff Lake D) was anticipated. Thus a lithogeochemical sampling project was undertaken in 1979 across part of the Maurice Bay deposit (Harper, 1979). Major oxides (SiO2, Al2O3, FeO, Fe2O, MgO, CaO, K2O, Na2O, MnO, P2O5, and TiO2) and a group of the most common trace metals (U, Ni, Co, Cu, Pb, As, Au, V, and Se) were analyzed to determine whether any elemental patterns (halos or depletions) could be detected which would reduce the number of pathfinder elements needed for exploration purposes. In addition to the above metals, Th was also checked because some conglomerate strata in the Maurice Bay area are known to be thorium-enriched (Harper, 1978). Only the trace metal distributions will be discussed in detail in this report.General GeologyThe Maurice Bay area is underlain by three major groups of rocks, the White Lake metamorphic complex, an unnamed granodiorite complex, and the Athabasca Group, described previously (Fig. 1; Harper, 1979). Table 1 summarizes the stratigraphic features as deduced by geological mapping and the examination of drill cores."
