Slag fuming has remained a key process for the recovery of Zn, Pb, and minor elements in the integrated flow sheet at Teck Cominco's Trail Operations for more than 75 years. Since the start-up of the KIVCETTM process and the #3 slag fuming furnace in 1997, a range of process intensification projects have been completed to improve metals recoveries and throughput based on improved process control, mechanical modifications, and, most recently, the implementation of oxygen enrichment of the blast air. This latter project, initially named 'nitrogen depletion' and now 'nitrogen oxygen performance enhancement' (NOPE), is the primary focus of this paper. NOPE reduces the amount of heat required to heat the inert nitrogen gas, and therefore more of the energy input can be used for reduction. It also frees up boiler capacity because the inert nitrogen gas does not then have to be cooled down. A dynamic METSIMTM model was developed to determine the opportunities to improve the process capacity and heat balance to both assist with justifying the project and to verify the observed furnace behaviour. Several process safety management issues were also addressed and a few key minor mechanical modifications were made to allow the project to proceed to commercial implementation at 25% blast air oxygen enrichment. Short term plant trials have confirmed the model predictions. The first three months of a long term, continuous trial showed a 6% increase in zinc fuming rate from average furnace performance despite the implementation of a KIVCETTM fluxing change to assist with minor element recovery that was expected to negatively impact the zinc fuming rate by 3 to 5%. This encouraging result is also in line with the model predictions.

"Sensor-based sorting technologies have potential to pre-concentrate low grade subeconomic ores through discarding the barren waste particles. However, the inability of sensors to accurately discriminate ore from waste is a barrier to prevent their wide applications. The present study focuses on the development of more intelligent sensing systems by using correlation and regression analysis of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) sensor responses on the copper ore samples obtained from Chile. The responses obtained through XRF scanning were reported both in the form of counts and the grades of elements. Linear and multiple linear correlation analyses were made between the XRF counts and the copper grades obtained through chemical analysis. Both the heterogeneity of the ore particles and the matrix effect in the XRF measurement are discussed in the study.INTRODUCTIONSorting can not only discard waste rocks away from the concentrator but also recover metal bearing ore particles that would be lost to the waste dump. The benefits of ore sorting include reduced energy consumption, water and reagent usage in the downstream operations (Bamber, 2008; Gunson, Klein, Veiga, & Dunbar, 2012; Kleine & Wotruba, 2010; Knapp, Neubert, Schropp, & Wotruba, 2014; Kobzev, 2014; Lessard, de Bakker, & McHugh, 2014; Mazhary & Klein, 2015; Robben, Wotruba, Robben, von Ketelhodt, & Kowalzcyk, 2013). X-ray fluorescence belongs to sensor-based sorting technologies and Xrays are a high energy-high frequency form of electromagnetic radiation inhabiting the region between the ultraviolet radiation and gamma rays (Shackley, 2011). Recent XRF sorting studies on low grade copper ores were carried out at MineSense Technologies Ltd. aimed at increasing the capacity related to improving the understanding of ore heterogeneity as the basis for developing semi-bulk or bulk sorting systems (MineSense Technologies Ltd., 2016)."

IBC has developed a cost effective MRT process for the selective extraction and recovery of gold, copper, and a mixture of other base metals from mine leach cyanide solutions. This is a two-stage system in which the gold is first recovered selectively as a high purity salt. The copper is then recovered separately as a sulfate salt. The other base metals are then collected as a cyano anion concentrate. Three different SuperLig® materials are used. The first stage can be used alone on gold leach solutions where copper and other base metals are not a problem. The two or three stage system is used when the base metals build up in the leach solution, resulting in increased costs. The cyanide or cyanide/cyano anion concentrate can be recycled back to the leach solution until the build-up of other salts, etc. becomes too high, or this too can be controlled with a percentage bleed stream.

"The discovery of the Mogador deposit concealed by 100 feet of overburden was the result of combined application of geological reasoning, ground geophysical surveys, studies of glacial float and extensive diamond drilling. The ground was acquired because it lay on the projected intersection of the Manville and Laflamme River faults. Systematic ground prospecting led to discovery of mineralized floats. A first unsuccessful exploration campaign lasted several years and consisted of 137 drill holes.In 1951 the boulder nests were reexamined and an associat'on of the mineralized float with boulders of a granodiorite, unknown in outcrops of the district, was established. Consequently, ground magnetic surveys were extended and re-interpreted, and a large anomaly interpreted as corresponding to a batholith was outlined. The existence of the batholith was immediately confirmed by drilling and the Mogador deposit discovered in third hole of new drilling programme in a zone of fractured volcanics paralleling southern contact of batholith.The Mogador deposit is a complex replacement of silicified volcanics by pyrite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite and galena carrying values in silver and gold. A total of 1,230,000 tons has been indicated, most of it now classified as fully developed proven ore."

Selective leaching of lead from a Pb-Ag-Zn concentrate with hydrogen peroxide in citrate solutions was studied at room temperature. Leaching tests were performed, varying the H2O2 concentration and the solid-liquid ratio, holding the solution pH constant at 7, and the citrate concentration at 1 M. Lead extractions of 100 % were achieved with 4 and 5 times the stoichiometric quantity needed to form elemental sulfur, with only a small amount of metal impurities dissolved (Ag, Zn and Fe). The lead solubility limit at those conditions was found to be ~21 g L-1. X-ray diffraction analyses of the leach residues were free of galena (PbS), while other metal sulfides, such as sphalerite (ZnS), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) and pyrite (FeS2), were basically unaffected.

"CANMET’s research into underground coal mining is primarily conducted at the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory (CBCRL), established in 1981 to conduct safety research in underground coal mines. Located close to Canada’s largest underground coal producer, in the Sydney Coalfield of Nova Scotia, CBCRL’s program also includes the two western underground coal operations. CBCRL is a relatively small laboratory with a staff of thirteen — eight professionals and five support staff — with an annual budget of over $1 million. In order to maintain effective research response, flexibility is key and staff are increasingly working in project teams, crossing traditional section ties and also drawing from specialist expertise elsewhere within CANMET.CBCRL’s research activities have had a substantial impact on the Canadian underground coal mining industry, particularly in Cape Breton. CBCRL contributed to Cape Breton Development Corporation’s (CBDC’s) threefold reduction in lost-time accidents in the 1980s. Also, in the last four years alone, CBCRL’s work has enabled CBDC to save over $17 million in improved utilisation of reserves and cost savings. The work embraces the three traditional areas of mine environment, strata mechanics and mining technologies, however the current direction has been strongly influenced by recent external and internal factors. It is timely to review progress and recent directions."

"Le présent article porte sur la diminution des rejets de concentrateurs produits durant l’exploitation et le traitement des minerais métalliques.Le minerai dilué envoyé au traitement a, très souvent, un certain pourcentage du stérile qui affecte directement la rentabilité des opérations souterraines et amplifie l’impact négatif sur l’environnement. Les essais de la séparation du stérile et du minerai effectués en milieu dense sur quelques types de la minéralisation d’or, ont démontré les deux possibilités qu’offre cette technique:• Dans le cas d’un minerai riche, il a été possible de séparer la part importante du toutvenant (minerai dilué contenant le minerai et le stérile) provenant de la dilution, tout en ayant un taux de récupération élevé (supérieur à 96%).• Dans le cas d’un minerai ayant une teneur sub-économique à cause d’une dilution importante, il est possible de produire un concentré ayant une teneur économique à l’entrée de l’usine de traitement, en éliminant une partie du tout-venant.En plus la séparation du stérile peut accroître, en outre, la rentabilité de l’exploitation minière, car le fait d’éliminer la partie de stérile le plus tôt possible diminue certains coûts (transport, traitement et autres). On conclue que la pré-concentration du minerai (séparation du stérile et du minerai) est probablement une seule solution actuellement étudiée qui diminue l’impact environnemental de la mine, sans avoir des conséquences négatives sur la rentabilité de l’exploitation souterraine."

"The Precambrian sedimentary series of the Labrador geosyncline, including iron formation, extends into southwestern Labrador and adjacent Quebec. The iron formation consisted of primary oxide, silicate, and carbonate facies which were deposited simultaneously in an irregular basin in response to migratory environmental conditions. The iron formation isochemically recrystallized to coarse-grained quartz-iron oxide, iron silicate, and quartz-iron carbon-ate rocks during prolonged regional metamorphism. The rocks are deformed on two deformation axes intersecting at large angles, and are characterized by isoclinal to recumbent folds. Parts of the formation have been profoundly affected by a post-metamorphic leaching and oxidizing environment."

"Dispersoids play a significant role in the recrystallization and texture development for wrought Al-Mg-Si (6xxx series) alloys by inhibiting grain boundary motion. It is therefore important to understand the precipitation kinetics of such particles. It is the additions of Mn and Cr in Al-Mg-Si based systems that can lead to dispersoid phases being formed. These phases are currently thought to nucleate on ß’-Mg2Si via an intermediate semi-coherent precipitate. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) has been conducted to study the precipitation of a-Al(CrFe)Si and a’-AlCrSi dispersoids. Corresponding electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) has been used to distinguish the dispersoids. The volume fraction and size distribution of dispersoids has been measured as a function of distance across a grain. Electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) has been conducted to study the inhomogeneity of elements in the cast structure and the effect on dispersoid precipitation. Dispersoid free regions have been observed in the microstructure correlating to regions depleted in the dispersoid forming elements.INTRODUCTION Al-Mg-Si (6xxx series) based alloys are increasingly being used in the automotive industry. The primary reason is to reduce the weight of vehicles, resulting in a reduction of CO2 emissions and increased fuel efficiency. The demand for 6xxx series is predicted to increase over the coming decade. Due to the high cost and CO2 emissions produced by raw extraction of aluminium, close loop recycling of these alloys becomes a more important process. However recycling of automotive alloys can be difficult due to pick up of impurity elements such as Mn, Cr and Fe. The addition of these elements can form dispersoid particles during early heat treatment processes. Although a controlled population of dispersoids is necessary to control the grain structure during thermo-mechanical processing, a significant change to the dispersoid population due to a composition change could profoundly influence the final microstructure, affecting the final properties of the material. More research is required on the precipitation and effect of additional minor alloying elements; in order to increase the 6xxx series alloys recyclability."

"The Adanac molybdenum porphyry deposit near Atlin, in northwestern British Columbia, was discovered in 1905. It was explored extensively between 1967 and 1980.The deposit is within a complex, multi-phase, quartz monzonite stock that is a satellite of the post-accretionary, Surprise Lake Batholith. Biotite K-Ar dates range from 703 ± 2.4 Ma to 71.6 ± 2.1 Ma, indicating a Late Cretaceous age of emplacement.The deposit comprises an irregular-shaped ring or halo peripheral to a quartz monzonite porphyry dome, or ""cupola': The shape of the ring, and of a smal~ fine-grained quartz monzonite intrusion, and the presence of higher-grade mineralimtion on the eastern flank of the cupola, suggest partial control by a preminera/ structure. The deposit is truncated by a steep, northwesterly dipping, normal fault (Adera Fault) that down-dropped the northern half of the deposit by a minimum of 100 mThe deposit lacks strong zonal alteration but there are narrow envelopes of potassic alteration around some veins and local zones of intense wall-rock silicification. There is considerable retrograde alteration along postminera/ faults and fractures.Molybdenite occurs in veins and fractures, many of which are relatively flat-lying. They occur in all phases of quartz monzonite. Molybdenum is the only element of economic significance. There are vein and skarn occurrences with tungsten, tin, lead, zinc and precious metals peripheral to the deposit.In 1981, Placer Development Limited reported an ""undiluted mineable mineral reserve"" of 151 971 000 tonnes grading 0.063% Mo at a cutoff grade of 0.04% Mo and a strip ratio of 1.5:1."

"Mine hoist brakes must meet the following statutory performance criteria:- There should be two independent braking systems; at least one should act directly on the hoist drum.-If one brake fail s, the others should be able to retard and stop the hoist safely before the descending conveyance, carrying the rated load, reaches any obstruction.- When all brakes apply, decelerations should not be so violent that men travelling in the conveyance are injured.- The brakes shall not overheat and fade during an emergency stop.This paper discusses design principles and capacities of caliper and disc type brakes, when applied to double drum and friction hoists of equivalent capacity.IntroductionThis paper is about the brakes that are used on mine hoists; their functions, especially in emergencies, typical design, and how they are operated, controlled, tested, and adjusted.There are two basic types of mine hoists:1. "Exploration and development of mineral resources in developing countries by Canadian-based multinational mining companies is becoming increasingly common. One problem being encountered is that the objectives of the governments of developing countries can differ from those of developed countries. These objectives are not always consistent with maximizing returns from the projects, which can create conflicts between the mining company's responsibility to its shareholders and the desire to be a good corporate citizen. This article discusses how a mining tax regime can be designed to make the social goals of a government consistent with the economic goals of the company.IntroductionAt the recent International Seminar on Mining Taxation organized by CIM and the United Nations there was considerable discussion about the role of international mining companies operating in developing countries. Not surprisingly, given the diversity of backgrounds of individuals attending the Seminar, there were different opinions about what this role should be.Government PositionRepresentatives of governments pointed out the strong desires of their countries for technology, high-level technical training of their workforce, increased employment, and development of social infrastructure. They pointed out that, to a large extent, these objectives could be more efficiently met by mining companies operating in the country than by the governments themselves. For example, a multinational mining company (""MMC"") would have extensive knowledge of the various technologies available, and would have performed a detailed evaluation of the mineral resources before choosing the most cost-efficient technology for that project. They would, therefore be in an ideal position to assist the country in importing and developing such technology. Similarly, the company could provide opportunities for hands-on training, both at the technical and managerial levels, which would otherwise be unavailable to the government."

Pressure leach autoclave circuits are employed in the leaching of ores, concentrates, mattes, alloys and intermediates for the recovery of metals into solution. Once the metals are extracted into solution the value metals can be recovered by hydrometallurgical means such as by purification followed by electrowinning, hydrogen reduction, pyrohydrolysis, crystallisation and other unit operations. In many of these integrated flowsheets the pressure leach step is pivotal to the recovery of the value metals from the host material. In an expansion or a new project, a large component of the capital cost can be associated with the pressure leach step and process engineers frequently look for opportunities to mitigate costs. This paper examines a new route for increasing the capacity of an exothermic pressure oxidation leach for sulphide concentrates, sulphide and phosphide mattes and alloys.

"THE HARDY MINE of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited is located in Lot 9, Concession 1, Levack Township, Sudbury District, Ontario, 20 miles northwest of the city of Sudbury, and a mile west of the town of Levack. The ore deposit is one of the many nickel-copper sulphide bodies found on, or near, the lower contact of the well-known Sudbury norite-micropegmatite irruptive, and is one of a family of ore deposits which occur on the northwest rim of the irruptive.The property was acquired by purchase in 1935. In the same year a magnetometer survey along the footwall contact of the norite, which is covered by about 150 feet of glacial sands and clays, first indicated the location of the orebody. Drilling from 1935 to 1942 outlined the extent of the ore. Shaft sinking was commenced in the fall of 1951, and the mine is now approaching full production at a rate of about 300,000 tons per year.There are several major differences between the geology of the Levack area and the Falcon bridge area, which lies at the opposite extremity of the irruptive, 28 miles to the east. The purpose of this paper is to describe the essential features of the geology of the Levack area as seen in the Hardy mine, and to supplement the recent papers on other properties in the Sudbury area by Davidson (1), Lochhead (2), and Yates (3).General GeologyA recent review of the regional geology and an extensive bibliography of the Sudbury area can be found in the two papers by H. Mesoporous gold sponge has the unique property of being both metallic and highly resistant to oxidation. It has potential application in catalysis, in bio-sensors, in optical coatings, in analytical chemistry and, as we show here, as the basis for a new kind of ultra-capacitor. Due to the cost of gold, the most probable niche for a gold-based ultra-capacitor would be in the high-power/high-energy regime, a region where gold would compete with devices based on RuO2. A high internal resistance limits the power that can be usefully drawn from existing carbon-based ultra-capacitors, and that this problem can potentially be overcome by gold-based devices. A simple proof-of-concept ultra-capacitor based on mesoporous gold is described and its behaviour during charge and discharge cycles examined. In this work a step change in the input or output voltage of the device was used as the controlling parameter. There was also a residual faradaic current resulting from traces of undissolved aluminium left over from the AuAl2 precursor used to make the sponge, and some charge storage due to polarization of the solution. Deconvolution of these three effects was not entirely accomplished, but an ostensible capacitance of about 7 to 14 mF/g Au was demonstrated. Further improvement from these early results seems likely.

In open stope mining borehole deviation is one of the main factors affecting the blasting results. Though previous research has identified some actual deviation patterns, these studies are unable to relate the hole deviation pattern with the blasting results and therefore it is not possible to modify the design or take remedial measures based on the prediction of the blasting results. An alternative to the conventional method for borehole surveying is the in-hole probing techniques. With their inherent errors, it is important to evaluate these surveying systems under conditions of different mine sites. The lack of available assessment methods has limited the application of these techniques. In this paper some of the characteristics of the actual hole deviation pattern are discussed based on data from surveying production holes in six stopes. A method of predicting the blasting results is proposed by considering the borehole deviation pattern. Based on the prediction stope design can be modified or further surveying is carried out to improve the blasting results. The tolerable error is introduced to relate the surveying error with the drilling pattern and therefore it is possible to assess various in-hole-surveying techniques.

Manufacturing of thin sheet is difficult in industries. Some approaches, such as small-draft multi-pass rolling, intermediate annealing, isothermal rolling and high-speed rolling were proposed to overcome the deformability. In this study, different rolling speeds from 15 to 1000 m/min were employed to twin rolled cast AZ31B magnesium alloy to different reductions. The results show thatAZ31B sheets rolled at 15 m/min and 100 °C has fractured for reductions of more than 30% per pass. However, by increasing the rolling speed to 1000 m/min the rollability was improved significantly and the material can be rolled to reductions of more than 70% per pass. The high speed and heavily deformed materials are fully recrystallized even at 100 °C.

Shear zones are tabular tructures which tend to occur either discordantly within, or concordantly along the margins of, competent rock masse uch as plutons, sill or flows. They contain deformed equivalents of their host rock and are common sites for gold mineralization localized in tructure oriented y tematically relative to the shear zones and internal linear fabric. Apan from genetic implications, hear zone analysis proves useful in exploration for this type of deposit because the zones are generally wider and more continuous than associated mineralization and because there is an element of predictability to mineralization geometry (i.e. vein orientation. plunge).

Barrick Gold recently implemented an oxygen roasting process to treat carbonaceous ore from its Goldstrike property in Nevada. One of the key project challenges was the design of the roaster gas cleaning system, which was driven by the requirements of a strict air permit and the need to achieve very high reliability. The roaster gas systems include multiple stages of wet particulate collection, a dual-alkali SO2 scrubber, mercury scrubbing, CO oxidation and NOx reduction. This paper describes the gas system, the influence of regulations on project implementation, and performance of the system.
