Industrial practice in mineral processing shows that an important problem in understanding and monitoring in-mill parameters is due to the lack of fundamental knowledge and appropriate sensors. With the development and growing use of DEM charge motion simulators for mill optimisation and design, it is possible to describe the fundamentals of grinding mill behaviour, in improving the understanding of internal grinding mill dynamics and in developing solutions to industrial practice. The main challenge to bringing this DEM technology to the mill operator however was the need for substantial computing power and time. However, what about a simplified DEM charge motion model running in real-time? What about the use of sensor technologies to correct any possible drift in simulator prediction? Could such a technological system be used to predict mill performance and eventually be used for mill control and optimisation? Some of these questions are answered with the development of an "on-line" DEM charge motion simulator package (SAGTools?) along with that of a number of sensor technologies (liner wear, acoustic, instrumented ball) that can contribute to simulator precision. With the objective of bringing this modelling and sensor technology into the concentrator control room to assist operators, this paper aims to describe the main elements of this emerging and developing technology and discuss how it can lead to online mill performance prediction and eventual control.

"The Key Lake uranium mine is the largest single uranium producer in the world. It is owned 2/3 by Cameco Corporation and 1/3 by Uranerz Exploration and Mining. Cameco is the operator. Current production is fourteen million pounds per year of uranium oxide (U308).The mine's location is 570 kilometres north of Saskatoon on the southern edge of the Athabasca Basin approximately at latitude 57° 11 'north and longitude 105° 34' west. Access to the mine is by an all-weather road and a private airstrip.The mill was commissioned in 1983. A molybdenum plant was constructed in 1989 in response to increasing molybdenum content in the yellowcake or final product. Early test work had showed that the first ore body to be mined, the Gaertner deposit, would present few problems with regards to molybdenum in the product. However, the test work also showed that the higher molybdenum content of the Deilmann ore, the second Key Lake orebody to be mined, would result in increased molybdenum concentrations. Without the molybdenum plant, penalties would become excessive and some product might not accepted by the refineries.This paper will describe the current Key Lake mill process with emphasis on the molybdenum solvent extraction process. It will cover the chemistry of the process, process development in the mid 1980's, and current operating practices.The Key Lake milling process consists of five individual plants, crushing and grinding, leaching -counter current decantation (CCD), solvent extraction, yellowcake/crystallization and bulk neutralization (Figure 1. "Kaiser Resources Ltd. has completed feasibility studies resulting in approval of $277,500,000 for the construction of the Greenhills Surface Coal Mine, located 35 km north of Sparwood, B.C. The mine is designed to produce 1,800,000 tonnes per year of metallurgical coal over a 20-year period by conventional truck /shovel methods.The project is in the detailed design phase, with some preparation work being carried out on the site. The major construction activities are scheduled to commence in the spring of 1981. Mine development and pre-stripping will commence in July 1981, with first coal production scheduled for mid 1983.This paper will be a general description of the project and will include a discussion of the geology, reserves, mine planning, coal handling and processing, surface facilities and related topics.IntroductionProject DefinitionThe Greenhills Project is designed to produce, by conventional truck I shovel surface mining methods, 1,800,000 clean tonnes of metallurgical coal per year for twenty years . The production/ life constraints were chosen as being meaningful for planning and evaluation purposes after appraisal of the market potential and are not limited .by economic reserves. Substantial additional strippable reserves are available which would facilitate expansion of the proposed mine life and/ or capacity. In fact , all the facilities are designed so that they can be expanded in the future to accommodate a doubling of annual coal production, and certain portions of the coal processing facilities are being installed with an annual capacity of 3,600,000 tonnes. The mine will also produce approximately 2,400,000 clean tonnes of oxidized thermal coal, mostly in the first decade."

"With Inco recording record profits over the past year, most people have forgotten the painful years of the last recession/depression when Inco was losing up to a million dollars a day for a short period . While high nickel prices have contributed to the exceptional recent profits, the real achievements stem from the tremendous advances in productivity and cost improvements that make Inco one of the lowest cost nickel producers.Some of the major advances in productivity have occurred in the mines. The establishment of Mining Research Departments in both Thompson and Copper Cliff in 1979/80 provided the stimulus and the opportunity to dedicate personnel to specific research projects, on a full-time basis; and more particularly to concentrate on the efficiency of the total mine system. The Copper Cliff North Mine was brought back into production as a research mine dedicated to the development and testing of new mining methods and equipment. A shop facility known as the ""Murray Shop"" was set up as the centre of innovation for the development and construction of prototype equipment required for new bulk mining methods. While other expenditures were being curtailed , investment in mining research was being increased. An early success was an ""in the hole"" drill that could be broken down into small components to access even the remotest sectors of a mine to convert labour intensive undercut-and-fill mining to "" vertical crater retreat "" , VCR, bulk mining. A new mine manufacturing company-Continuous Mining Systems-was incorporated with the objective of building innovative mining equipment, with strong focus on automated continuous sytems. Continuous Mining Systems has now grown to a $25 million per year business. With these synergistic thrusts, the VCR bulk mining method was implemented in all of the Ontario Division mines, raising the percentage of ore mined by bulk mining techniques from 320/0 in 1981 to over 90% today. Coupled with re-designed job responsibilities, sup- ported by appropriate training, mine productivity more than doubled. It was discovered that VCR mining could be adapted to the narrower Thompson mine ores with identical improvements in productivity. Development of the Thompson Open Pit North had an additional favourable impact on production cost s in Thompson. The timing of the open pit development could not have been better. It permitted Inco to rapidly increase production at high productivity and low cost, in years of record demand and prices."

THE Dolly Varden Mine is situated in the Kitsault River valley, eighteen miles from the head of Alice arm, in the Nass River mining division of British Columbia. During the years 1919-21 it was operated by the Taylor Engineering Company, Limited, and produced 1,300,000 oz. silver from about 36,000 tons of ore. The ore was transported by narrow-gauge railway to Alice arm, and shipped to the smelter at Anyox for treatment. During recent years, a small quantity of high-grade ore has been extracted by leasers and shipped to the smelter at Tacoma, Wash. Unfortunately, the bonanza ores which occurred near the surface did nor persist to depth, and two hundred feet below the exposures only rare and unimportant patches of ridi ore have been found. Two opinions exist as to the origin of this rich silver ore. One, advanced by V. Delmage (1, 2), is that the ores are hypogene, and the other, by G. Hanson(3, 4, S), is that the ores are the result of supergene enrichment. It is true that Dolmage first advanced his view that the ores are primary because they appeared to be analagous to Premier ore, which he had studied in detail and which he considered to be primary. The present authors have had access to excellent suites of material from both mines and consider the comparison well taken, the only essential mineralogical difference being the presence at the Premier mine, in addition to the silver minerals, of gold and electrum. Although the arguments put forward by Delmage have, in the opinion of the authors, never been refuted, nevertheless R. P. D. Graham(6), in a reference to the mine published in 1924, describes the ore as of supergene origin, and since then nobody appears to have challenged this statement. Indeed, in 1935, Hanson re-affirmed his earlier conclusion(5).

There is an increasing awareness on an international level of the potential for utilizing many wastes and by-products as construction materials. This has resulted in recent major reviews by OECD and RILEM to supplement national activities by agencies such as CANMET, USBM, BRE and LCPC. Much of this international and national work was reported during an International Conference on the use of by-products and wastes in civil engineering held in November 1978 in Paris. Based on participation in the OECD and RILEM reviews, and the Paris conference, developments in waste and byproduct utilization of particular concern to Canada are described. The major technical and economic constraints involved are also reviewed, so that the over-all evaluation reflects important factors such as inherent variability and transport logistics. Areas requiring further research and development are also identified. Particular emphasis is placed on slags, salvaged asphaltic concrete and surplus sulphur. "Due to the rapid development of China's industry, more than a hundred million tons of industrial wastes are generated annually, which occupy lots of land for storing, bring about environmental pollution, obstruct industrial and agricultural production and cause harm to people 's living. Therefore we must utilize them effectively to create wealth for our country. "

"The phosphate deposit, located in the Abu Tartur plateau between the Kharga and the Dakhla Oases in the southern part of the Western Desert of Egypt, is the largest of its kind in the country. The phosphates are found in two horizons referred to as the Lower and Upper Phosphate Horizons within the Late Campanian Sibaiya Formation which belongs to the Nubia Group.This paper presents the results of a geostatistical study on the main phosphorite bed at the base of the Lower Phosphate Horizon which contains almost all the commercial reserves in the area. After semivariogram modeling for the phosphate thickness and accumulation, ordinary block kriging was employed to estimate the values of these variables in blocks of400 m by 400 m dimensions. The kriging results, which are presented in the form of contour maps, can be of considerable use in both future exploration and exploitation of the deposit. The grade-tonnage relationship based on the grade estimates derived from the corresponding thickness and accumulation estimates indicates the existence of 453.9 x 105 tonnes of phosphate above a cut-off grade of 18% P2O5. The mean grade of this tonnage has been estimated to be 25.77% P205"

"A general review of the wear problems encountered in the mining industry is presented and current practice for wear protection systems is reviewed.A new concept in wear protection is described and compared to alternative systems. Utilization of conventional stud welding technology and abrasion-resistant wear studs is shown to be a useful supplement or substitution for conventional techniques. Operating life of many consumable components can be increased by up to four fold. The technique is highly portable for on-site field application or can be used in shop environments.Details of the wear protection model and metallurgical properties of the wear component are also reviewed. Laboratory wear test data are reported to supplement field test performance or to screen potential alloy compositions for application in specific environments.A Review of Wear Problems and Wear ProtectionThe emphasis on wear protection has increased in recent years because of the increasing impact of the potential savings in time, materials and energy. A 1974 German study concluded that attention to tribology, the study of friction and wear, could save approximately $3 billion, and a study in the U.S.A. at the same time put the figure at $100 billion of which $20 billion was for materials. A more recent American study put the energy component of the potential savings at $16.2 billion per year. A recent British study estimated the total potential savings in the U.K. as $1 billion per year, with the largest savings coming from lower maintenance and replacement costs ($500 million), lower breakdown costs ($250 million) and increased machinery life ($200 million). These three major contributions are all potentially accessible in the mining industry."

Mining firms in Canada are increasingly incorporating the social and environmental interests of their stakeholders into their projects in an effort to become more sustainable. Such initiatives have included negotiating Impact and Benefit Agreements (IBAs) directly with would-be impacted, often aboriginal, communities near resource developments in the Canadian north. Why does a mining firm take on this extra time-and cost-intensive initiative when governments and regulatory measures are in place to address social and environmental issues? Past research has paid little attention to the corporate rationales for IBAs. Based on document review and interviews with mining executives, this study investigates the rationales of mining firms that ?over-comply? with legislative requirements by negotiating IBAs or similar types of agreements with communities. The results indicate that mining firms increasingly recognize IBAs as an intrinsic part of the permitting process. When queried, executives regularly identified the negotiation of agreements as ?the right thing to do?. While this response could be read in ethical terms, a commercial rationale is also clearly present. By building strong relationships with nearby communities, addressing community concerns, and directing benefits to local people, all of which are explicitly achieved with an IBA, mining firms are maintaining their long-term financial viability, thus their sustainability, within an evolving industry.

"Current practice in advanced materials processing has involved the dispersion of a second-phase, commonly SiC, glass, or other non-metallic fibres/whiskers/particulates to enhance physical characteristics of the matrix. These matrices may be either ceramic or metallic but in either case it is important that the physical and chemical properties of each phase be compatible. The dispersed, finely divided second phase is often both expensive and foreign-produced and may exhibit chemical instability at elevated temperatures. Thus, it would appear that certain naturally-occurring industrial mineral fibres/whiskers/particulates might offer an attractive and low-cost alternative. Suitable candidates, such as wollastonite and sillimanite, are available in Canada and may be milled to produce particles whose shape is appropriate for this application. It is suggested that wollastonite, in particular, may be a useful modifying agent in metal matrix composites utilizing AI, Al-Si, Zn-Al or other light metals and alloys. In addition, the possible use of these minerals in ceramic matrix materials is also addressed, with reference to a preliminary thermodynamic analysis of the systems involved.IntroductionBackgroundA composite material may be thought of as consisting of a matrix component, the properties of which are improved by the addition of a second component or dispersed phase which forms a distinct three-dimensional interface with the matrix. This matrix is commonly either metallic or ceramic, which leads to the two most popular types of composites: metal-matrix composites (MMC); and ceramic-matrix composites (CMC).Such materials are by no means new. Early composites include fiberglass, mixtures of plaster and horsehair in wall plastering, as well as use of natural materials such as bamboo in fishing rods. The optimal geochemical parameters required to form ellringite in a lime-remediated site have been investigated with the use of thermodynamic modelling. The speciation of sulphate and 10 metals analyzed in samples of a mine tailing from northern Quebec was calculated with a computer model. The model also includes calcium, which would result from the addition of lime to the system. Two speciation calculations were done. The first one is a hypothetical speciation before the onset of precipitation and was used to devise the stability fields of minerals susceptible of forming in high pHs. The stability fields were determined by building activity ratio diagrams with sulphate, aluminum and calcium species concentrations for pHs ranging from 4 to 14. The investigation was carried out for a 25°C solution with an ionic strength less than 0.12. Thermodynamics predict that an optimal stability field for ettringite in the mine tailing samples containing 10-3 mol/L SO4-2,10-2 mol/L of AI(OH)4 requires at least 10-2mol/L of Ca+2 and a pH larger than 11.6. The sulphate contents of the mine tailing samples, however, limit the precipitation of ettringite and monosulphate could be an end-precipitate. The second speciation is in equilibrium with precipitates and provides information on the speciation of the residual metals. If ellringite could be precipitated as a stable form, it could serve as a sorptive agent for residual metals, and, due to its binding properties, consolidate tailings.

"This paper covers the planning, development, and mining of an underground pillar complex using a bulk mining method. To achieve the long-term goal of continually improving our operating processes, all cut-and-fill and undercut-and-fill workplaces at Thompson Mine have been evaluated for their conversion potential to the bulk method referred to as VerticalBlock Mining (V.B.M.).Since December 1979, conversion has occurred to the extent where 80% of the ore hoisted is mined using Vertical Block Mining (V.B.M.).Productivity and profitability have been substantially improved by converting to this bulk method, especially in pillar areas.IntroductionThompson Mine is a 6000 ton per day underground nickel mine located 3 miles outside the City of Thompson, 400 air miles north of Winnipeg . The mine has two shafts, T-l and T-3 (Fig. 1). The T-l shaft is 4427 feet deep with the deepest mining taking place on 4000 level. The T-3 shaft, which is the area of this presentation, extends to a depth of 2607 ft with the deepest operating level at 2400 ft. The two shafts, some 10 000 ft apart, are connected underground on numerous levels. The ore mined at T-3 is trammed on 2400 level to the T-I main ore pass and hoisted through the T-l shaft. Eight hundred and fifty thousand cubic feet of fresh air per minute ventilates the mine.The 1400 level 310 pillar complex is located in the T-3 mine area. There are six rib pillars, two crown pillars and one main pillar (boundary pillar between cut-and-fill stopes) within the complex (Fig. 2). The majority of the ore in this area has been mined using mechanized cut-and-fill techniques .Undercut-and-fill mining was the method originally planned to recover these pillars. It is slow, labour-intensive, and requires extensive use of timber during the mining cycle. The extraction drifts in the area are heavily timbered due to their proximity to the ore and the age of the facilities. Increasing drift maintenance costs and the successful mining of two main pillars with V.8.M. techniques provided the stimulus to review the mining plans for this area."

Many leading copper and other mineral processors have rapidly adopted advanced controls in last 5-10 years. Almost 600 multivariable predictive controls have been installed in mineral processing, and almost 50% of those are in copper concentrator plants. In most cases, mineral processors rely on 3rd party support to implement these advanced technologies. One challenge facing advanced control user is the selection providers and services for these technologies. The trend has been towards the use of multivariable predictive control and use of technology provider’s services. This paper will discuss status of advanced control, and the merging trends in the mining industry. A review will be presented of how advanced control is being applied in the mining industry over the last decade, and how user challenges are being overcome. Next the emerging uses of multivariable predictive control (such as multi/inter-unit optimization), focusing on the latest trends in concentrator plants. Finally, a review will be made of emerging technology advances in the that can be advantageous to mineral processors. INTRODUCTION Review of advanced control in mineral processing Advanced controls are serving an increasing role to improve processing plant operations and profitability. As advanced control is being installed into more mining processing plants such as copper concentrators, many of these plants are concerned about the selection technologies and vendors to support the installation and maintenance of these controls. In a study by Jonas and Craw (2011), they found that most new users have not had prior experience with advanced controls. It is the author’s experience of almost 30 years in advanced controls that most mineral processers considering advanced controls can benefit from better understanding of the technologies and their support requirements.

Red lake is a body of water some thirty miles in length lying about forty miles northwest of the outlet of Lac Seul. It forms one of several large lake expansions on a river which enters the English river from the north, twenty miles below Lac Seul. Before the construction of the National Transcontinental railway a long canoe journey was necessary to reach that part of the English river, and Red lake, two days travel beyond, was one of the furthest outposts of the trading companies in that difficultly accessible triangle of country between Lake Winnipeg, James Bay and the English and Albany rivers. The Hudson's Bay Company post at Red lake is said to be one of the earliest established in the district but there are no records at the post, and as the English and Albany rivers never were used to any great extent as travel routes there is no mention of the place in the diaries of any of the early explorers. Dr. Bell passed through Red lake on his excursion to the Berens river country in 1883, and a brief note mentions that Huronian rocks were seen. To Dr. Dowling, however, belongs the credit for the first thorough description of this basin of sediments and basic volcanics. In 1893 he followed the course of Dr. Bell's trip, of ten years previous, through Red lake to the upper part of the Berens river.

ERP systems have been widely implemented nowadays in several industries. However, ERP was originally designed to fit former MRP and MRP II users, and most of the ERP research has been focused on discrete manufacturing . On the other hand, process industries ? and mining in particular ? present many peculiar characteristics, which are difficult to comply with ERP systems standard functionalities. Again, very limited research has been developed covering enterprise management systems in mining. The objective of this paper is to identify, through an explanatory study that includes a case study methodology, how ERP systems manage the functional areas of the mining industry, and how they fit into the mineral value chain IT requirements. A secondary objective is to identify the gaps between ERP?s functional capabilities and the mining industry business requirements, and to point out the perceived benefits they generate to the companies.

"A laboratory test program was initiated by the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources as part of the National Uranium Tailings Program to investigate the applicability of a radium selective ion exchange complexer for removing radium from Canadian uranium mining effluents. The test program was carried out by Melis Consulting Engineers Ltd. under contract to the Department of Supply and Services using the Saskatchewan Research Council facilities located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.The results of this work showed the ion exchange complexer, Dowex XFS 43230.00, to be efficient in removing radium from contaminated water of uranium mining operations with the ultimate loading capacity of the resin on one type of water treated being determined as approximately 1,600 Bq/cm3 of new resin. Although this resin has potential application for treatment of effluent streams in uranium operations it has been identified that the resin efficiency and capacity is directly related to the chemistry of the water being treated and site-specific testwork is required in order to establish reliable design data for full-scale operations.IntroductionThe possible applicability of a radium-selective ion exchange complexer for removing radium from Canadian uranium mining effluents had been identified and discussed as a possible alternative to present radium removal methods during a review of disposal technology options for the National Uranium Tailings Program of the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources(1). Work by other workers(2.3) had shown the complexer to be very efficient in removing radium from contaminated water. Also, plant trials on contaminated minewater at the Mt. Taylor uranium mine in New Mexico is reported to have shown the resin complexer to be efficient under plant operating conditions.As a result, a laboratory test program was initiated by the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources as part of the National Uranium Tailings Program to investigate the suitability of this resin for Canadian uranium mining effluents. Cemented paste backfill (CPB) is an innovative tailings management method that consists in returning considerable amounts of mine tailings into the underground mine openings. The filled stopes thus participate to the ground support that allows maximizing orebody extraction and a safer environment for the mine workers. There are also significant environmental advantages of using CPB. Indeed, up to 50% of the concentrator tailings can be backfilled, leading to a smaller volume of problematic waste materials to be managed at the surface. Once the CPB is placed, or when the mine is flooded at its end-life, the backfill is subjected to underground water flows that may leach and spread the pollutants (mainly metals, sulphates, and acidity) which can contaminate the underground waters. The aim of this study is to characterize the leaching properties of CPB material and to identify the cement phases that ensure the metal fixation. A laboratory procedure was implemented consisting in the preparation of various paste backfill mixtures using sulphide-rich and sulphide-free materials, different types of binder, and mixing waters having various sulphates, copper and zinc concentrations. After 90-days curing time, the samples were submitted to column leaching tests. The CPB materials were flushed each day with 100 ml of deionised water during 100 days. The collected leachates were then analyzed for pH, Eh, electric conductivity and chemical composition. For some samples, a differential acid neutralisation test was carried out. The objective of this experiment is to dissolve selectively the hydrated phases by adding incremental acid concentrations. By analyzing punctually the equilibrated solutions, the composition of the dissolved phases and their metal content can be estimated. The leaching test results showed that the pH of the leachates remains alkaline during the test period. When the pH decreases under 10 (after 30 days), different behaviours in terms of chemical element release (especially for zinc) were observed. During the test, the oxidation of pyrite seems to slow down, probably due to passivating phenomena. Moreover, the differential acid neutralisation test results allowed a better understanding of the CPB mineralogy and the Zn-bearing cement phases. Zinc and the other metals seem to be fixed within a calcium-magnesium silicate.

"This paper is intended to show that grinding media can effect flotation results, and in some instances the results are vastly different. I do not suggest that autogenous grinding is beneficial in the separation of all complex base metal ores, in fact I know of a case where autogenous grinding would be disastrous to any selective flotation. I do however contend that prospective flow sheets and reagent balances of any complex base metal ores should be tried with both types of grinding. I feel fortunate that the paper to be presented later in this meeting by Rene Klymouski will, I think, compliment and perhaps explain some of the results of my research.This paper will be in four parts. The first part deals with a literature survey on the subject. Surprisingly enough, very little information has been printed on the subject. The second part deals with results obtained in bench scale tests on an ore from Chester Mines Limited. It was in these tests that we realized that steel grinding was giving us serious problems. So bench scale tests are shown giving results with a stainless steel grind, a mild steel grind and a grind in a ceramic mill with ceramic billets.The third part of the paper deals with results obtained in the Mines Branch Pilot Plant, when again we ground the ore with three different types of grinding media. Incidentally, this has been the only pilot plant test made at the Mines Branch in which flotation products were made on both steel grinding and autogenous grinding on the same ore. The fourth part deals with two other New Brunswick ores and is intended to show that changing the grinding media effects ores other than that of Chester Mines Limited."
