Research has been conducted for the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board of Ontario (WSIB) to characterize thin, spray-on lining materials (TSLs), as well as combinations of TSLs and conventional spray supports, and to assess their capacity for inhibiting damage created by mining-induced rockbursts. This study has been performed to assess the capabilities of such support systems for preventing rock and support material damage that often results due to rockbursting. A variety of TSLs and other spray support media were subjected to the effects of simulated rockbursting, through use of explosive detonation trials, to evaluate their damage mitigation capacity. Results have validated that TSLs and variant layer combinations may be as effective as or better than conventional support materials for mitigating rockburst or like damage in highly stressed mine environments. In civil engineering construction, and typically in underground tunneling operations where concrete linings are applied, liner deterioration is a continuing and pervasive problem that often requires expensive and time-consuming rehabilitation effort. The ability of TSLs to provide effective concrete structural reinforcement while providing sustainable resistance against underground or restricted environmental hazards, as with fires or dynamic failure events, may permit wider use of TSLs than is currently foreseen by the mining industry. Significant benefits for use of TSL materials in concrete liner rehabilitation and for concrete material protection have been assessed.

"In the mining industry several types of fills are used for backfill operations. They are broadly categorized into three basic types: rock fill, hydraulic/slurry fill, and paste fill. Recently, paste fill has become the popular alternative for backfilling because of its many environmental and operational advantages including its ability to use total tailings, both fine and coarse fractions.Amaratunga and Annor (1989) first presented the concept of agglomeration of fine tailings, which are otherwise excluded from backfilling, for utilization in backfill as a readily available supplementary fill material. Previous experimental work investigated the use of agglomerated fine gold mill tailings in low density slurry fills (60 -70% pulp density), consisting of varying agglomerate and tailings compositions.This paper presents the ongoing research into utilizing these agglomerates in a high density paste fill (70 -85% pulp density). Various binder dosages, curing period and combinations of pellet to tailings ratios were studied. Slump of the raw fill and compressive strength of the cured fill were examined. Results from the above study indicate that agglomerated tailings paste fill (ATPF) has superior strength characteristics when compared to total tailings paste fills.IntroductionThe Canadian mining industry produces more than 500 million tonnes of tailings and waste rock annually. These tailings consist of a coarse fraction and a fine fraction and can be either reactive (acid generating) or non-reactive. Most mining operations utilize the coarse fraction for backfilling while the fines have been traditionally disposed of in surface tailings ponds. Recently, paste fill has been developed which uses a fraction of the fine tailings (10 - 30% w/w of >45 µ,m) in the fill. This development allows a mining company to use a portion of the fines for backfill, but still requires surface impoundment of the unused portion of fine tailings. Reactive tailings have the added problem of generating acid after being oxidized in the presence of air and water. Treating acid mine drainage (AMD) seepage from these ponds has proven to be a costly environmental problem and long term liabilty.One practical method to reduce the environmental impacts associated with the tailings pond and to modify the physical and chemical properties of the fine mill tailings so that they can be utilized and disposed of in an environmentally safe manner through surface or underground applications is through agglomeration using the Cold-Bond Tailings Agglomeration technology (CBTA). Amaratunga and Annor (1989) first presented the concept of agglomeration of fine tailings for use as coarse aggregates for underground backfill, gravel or surface covering material. CBT A reduces the necessity of impounding tailings on surface while providing a suitable coarse aggregate resource material for practical use. Although the CBT A technology has been mainly limited to pelletization agglomeration alone, other forms of agglomeration like pressure agglomeration which include the techniques of briquetting and extrusion have also proven successful (Amaratunga, 1995)."

The KOV, Kananga and Tilwezembe copper-cobalt deposits in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have lain dormant for over ten years due to lack of funding by the State-owned mining company, Gecamines. Nikanor Pic through its operating company DCP has secured the mining titles from the DRC government and has commenced redevelopment of these large copper deposits. DCP plans to produce 250,000 tonnes per annum of LME Grade "A" copper cathode and up to 30,000 tonnes per annum of cobalt salts. This paper describes the geology, re-development of the KOV mine and the two smaller mines, Kananga and Tilwezembe, the design of a new copper-cobalt processing facility and the challenges in refurbishing the associated infrastructure.

Over 90% of the Romania's lignite reserve is located in the region of Oltenia, which is why this area is given special attention in the country's coal resources. Because the lignite deposit of Oltenia is comprised of 1-8 exploitable coal layers, their capitalizing calls for urgent arrangements to ensure rational exploitation under conditions of total safety, minimum losses and efficiency. The technology used the coal pits of North-Western Oltenia is the technology of excavation, transport and dumping in a continuous flow by using the complexes of excavation, transport and high-capacity dumping. The theme of this paper is of particular importance because the rhythmic operation in complete safety, is necessary both for sizing and keeping within the bounds of acceptable values, throughout the process of excavation of the geometric elements of the coal faces, marked by: the height of benches, slope angle and width of berms. Geometric dimensions of the benches of the open pits, the height of benches, slope angle and width of berms shall be calculated and shall be based on: the massif structure that forms the benches; physical-mechanical characteristics of rocks from the bench; working conditions, characterized mainly by mining and extraction methods applied; functional parameters of the mechanical equipment used to perform various operations on the coal face etc. For this study it was necessary a broad field for task tracking, measurement, research and design elements of the coal face, for land survey and a desk activity by: processing of topographic data, laboratory analyses on physical and mechanical properties of rocks and numerous specialized studies. In the final part, we bring some contributions to elucidating the issues of special importance for the lignite coal pits of Oltenia, coming up with data, graphics, formulas, solutions and concrete dimensioning of coal faces in terms of using technology in a continuous flow.

"Unusually rich molybdenum ores (cutoff grade = 4.10/0 Mo) hosted by Lower Cambrian black shales have been mined since 1985 near Zunyi in the province of Guizhou in China. Similar ores were once worked for Mo and Ni near Dayong in the province of Hunan. In both mining areas, mineralization occurs in Lower Cambrian black shale (Niutitang Formation and stratigraphic equivalents) as a single sulfide bed or lens with exposed thicknesses up to 15 cm and reported thicknesses up to 35 cm. In addition to high Mo values (4% to 7%), ore samples contain up to 7% Ni, 2% Zn, 2.5% As, and several hundred ppb Au and Pt-group elements, but the precious metals have never been recovered from the ores. Sporadic occurrences of Mo-Ni sulfide ore beds are found in at least five provinces stretching approximately 1600 Ian from Yunnan to Zhejiang. None of the Mo-Ni ore-bed occurrences has any obvious connection with mafic or ultramafic source rocks. Similar occurrences containing elevated values for Ni, Mo, and PGE exist in Devonian black shale in the Yukon. Future exploration for Pt, Au, Mo, and Ni deposits should consider this previously unknown type of sediment-hosted mineral deposit.Sommaire - Des minerais anormalement riches en molybdène (teneur-limite = 4.1% Mo) provenant de schistes argileux noirs du Cambrien Inferieur ont été exploites depuis 1985 près de Zunyi dans la province de Guizhou en Chine. Des minerais semblables ont déjà été traire pour Mo et Ni près de Dayong dans la province de Hunan. Dans ces deux régions minières, la minéralisation se présente dans le schiste argileux noir du Cambrien Inferieur (Formation Niutitang et équivalents stratigraphiques) sous forme de couche ou lentille unique de sulfures avec des épaisseurs exposées de plus de 15 cm et des épaisseurs rapport6es de plus de 35 cm. En plus des fortes teneurs en Mo (4%-7%), des échantillons du minerai contiennent jusqu’ à 7% de Ni, 2% de Zn, 2.5% d'As, et plusieurs centaines de ppb d'or et d'éléments du groupe du platine; toutefois, les métaux précieux n'ont jamais été récupérés des minerais. Des présences sporadiques sous forme de couches de minerai sulfure de Mo-Ni se retrouvent dans pas moins de cinq provinces s'etendant sur 1600 km de Yunnan a Zhijiang. Aucune de ces présences de minerais, sous forme de couches, ne semble associée a des roches du type mafique ou ultramafique. Des présences similaires contenant des teneurs élevées en Ni, Mo et EOP se retrouvent dans le schiste argileux noir Devonien du Yukon. L'exploration future pour des gisements de Pt, Au, Mo et Ni doit prendre en considération ce type de gisement encore inconnu précédemment."

"INTRODUCTIONThe proper selection of carbon for a gold carbon in pulp (CIP) circuit involves careful evaluation of several physical, chemical and economic factors. A series of evaluations are required to maximize gold recovery at the lowest capital and operating costs, whether the carbon is selected for an existing gold mill circuit or a new mill under design.Although evaluation may proceed through various stages, it is the intent of this paper to outline some of the preliminary testwork that should be carried out to screen potential carbons for a particular application.An examination of the specification sheets supplied by the various carbon manufacturers may indicate some desirable properties on which to make cursory selection. This exercise by itself will not provide the basic data needed for selecting the best carbon for a particular ore pulp and metallurgical circuit. The necessity of further metallurgical evaluation is indicated by the fact that different carbons perform differently depending on the physical and chemical nature of the leach pulp. In the case of an existing mill, actual leach slurries using mill water are available and should be used for testwork. In the case of new mills, leach pulps must be prepared to simulate the proposed circuit.Five coconut shell activated carbons were obtained from various suppliers, all reported to be 6 x 16 mesh carbons recommended for CIP circuits. A metallurgical evaluation was made utilizing two leach pulps with significantly different characteristics. This paper describes the test procedures utilized and the results obtained from the testwork."

"Abstract-A variety of techniques for interpreting systems of mineralized echelon veins is discussed using examples from Panasqueira and SW England. As aids for exploration and mine planning, and as a tool for ore reserve evaluation, particular emphasis is placed upon establishing vein morphology in the third dimension, and upon understanding vein dilation and propagation histories. Special attention is also placed upon investigating vein thickness and spacing relationships, and upon understanding vein segmentation. The relevant data for these techniques are all readily obtainable from stope and core sources.The vein systems described were produced in host-rock sequences that underwent incremental dilation in response to fluid overpressures, and individual veins display evidence for mineral infilling synchronous with their propagation. Echelon vein geometries resemble those reported from igneous dikes and sills: vein walls are stepped and veins are divided into segments arranged in echelons. Changes in vein geometry, from arrays to composite structures, reflect both the evolution of the vein system with time, and the changes occurring between the margins (arrays) and core (composite structures) of the system. These characteristic morphologies can be used to infer vein propagation and fluid injection trends, proximity of neighboring veins, and the shape of the system as a whole. The techniques are applicable to systems of echelon veins produced under tensile conditions in rocks where faults were absent at the time of vein formation, and where subsequent deformation has been minimal. Further work is required to assess the application to echelon vein systems formed within more complex tectonic regimes."

Le concept du forage horizontal a été développé voilà de nombreuses années. Différents types de plate-formes permettant le forage horizontal depuis une cheminée ont été conçus par divers manufacturiers ou opérateurs miniers. Entre autres, on connaît bien la griffe de montage Alimak à laquelle peut être fixée une plat-forme sur laquelle est montée une foreuse. En 1992, Ross-Finlay a développé sa propre plate-forme de forage qui à notre opinion améliore la flexibilité du concept du forage horizontal, en augmente la productivité et en diminue le coût d?ensemble tout en assurant une sécurité accrue des travailleurs. Tel que montré à la figure 1, la plate-forme employée à la Mine Kiena est composée d?un toit de protection contre les chutes d?objets et de deux passerelles de forage de forme carrée. Le toit et les passerelles sont fixées à une structure de 6.5 m de longueur équipée de deux assemblages de rouleaux (non montrés à la figure) permettant de faire glisser l?ensemble sur des rails Alimak. L?angle du toit et des passerelles peut être ajusté pour des cheminées dont le pendage varie de 65 degrés à 85 degrés.

Sulphide concentrates may exhibit self-heating to various degrees during storage or shipping, the worst cases presenting a serious hazard from fire and SO2 emission. Based on measurements of heating rates on a wide variety of concentrate samples in a special apparatus, combined with field experience, a methodology has been developed which allows concentrates to be rated for their heating potential. This has proven to be very useful in practice, for example, in deciding on the need to take preventive measures. Oxidation under ambient conditions in the presence of moisture initiates heating locally within a stockpile. In the case of highly active materials, such as those that contain abundant pyrrhotite, heating may progress through three stages to temperatures well above 500°C. However, most concentrates show little or no propensity to self-heat. Heating rates were used to estimate values of the heat output, or self-heating capacity (in joules per gram), which sustains the process at each stage. Thermal data from differential scanning calorimetry are also reported. Variables which affect self-heating are discussed and an actual case of heating control on a stockpile by covering is described. A simple apparatus which can be used to simulate stockpiling conditions has been tested successfully and is proposed as a convenient test system.

Information integration and exchange for the entire building life cycle is one of the most important issues in the AEC industry. Although the Building Information Model (BIM) technology is widely utilized to address them, BIM is mainly concerned within the design and construction (D&C) phases. In the operation and maintenance (O&M) phases, however, the information integration and exchange issue becomes more complicated because software applications here require not only BIM but other information outside of the AEC domain, e.g., disaster mitigation. Nowadays, most BIM-related research focuses on the D&C phases and pays less concern on the O&M phases, hence there is a research need that can help seamlessly transfer the information between the D&C and O&M phases. In this research, a software framework using ontology was designed to deal with aforementioned problems. The BIM data from the D&C phases were used as a foundation to generate new models for different software applications for the O&M phases. The ontology technique was employed to assist the model transformation process between the original BIM and the models for applications. Finally, a disaster mitigation example was chosen to validate the framework, in order to make sure that the transformation process is comprehensive and useful from domain experts? perspective.

The present paper focuses the application of CFD techniques to investigate the Top-Submerged- Lance (TSL) gas injection in liquid metal. Previous works of the authors have shown that up- and down- scaling procedures based on the modified Froude number have some shortcomings, as this approach does not take into account the interfacial and viscous forces. Indeed, surface tension and dynamic viscosity of the smelting slags (σ = 0.4-0.5 N/m, μ = 0.2 Pa·s) are higher than the operating fluids that have been used in literature (water, paraffin oil) to study TSL injection in down-scaled furnaces. In order to get closer to real systems, the authors study the TSL injection of Argon in a liquid metal. An experimental campaign was carried out in the X-ray lab at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), where the eutectic alloy GaInSn was used as liquid phase. The alloy is liquid at room temperature, and X-Ray imaging is used to picture the multiphase flow in a quasi-2D vessel. The aim of the present work is to demonstrate the applicability of CFD techniques to model multiphase flows involving liquid metals, and validate the model using the data produced at HZDR. The commercial software ANSYS Fluent® was used together with the Volume of Fluid model to directly resolve the gas-liquid interphase. Some features of the flow, such as the void fraction distribution and bubble detachment frequency are tracked with CFD and compared to the experimental data. INTRODUCTION In the last thirty years the TSL smelting technology has increasingly been used for industrial non- ferrous smelting processes and is now one of the significant pyrometallurgical processes. Developed in the early 1970’s at CSIRO, the furnace is nowadays commercialized in different market sectors, including copper and lead smelting, zinc fuming, waste treatment and slag recovery (Floyd, 2005). Despite the wide application of these reactors in the pyrometallurgical market, some aspects of the process are still not fully clarified, since in-situ measurements and optical accesses are prohibitive because of the high temperatures and aggressive conditions. Phenomena such as the bubbling regime, the slag solidification and the submerged combustion still need a deeper scientific investigation to obtain a better understanding of the process.

"The Poplar Mountain gold occurrence in western New Brunswick is hosted in the Poplar Mountain volcanic complex (PMVC), which is located along the southern segment of the regional Woodstock fault zone. The PMVC consists of three principal units including, in ascending order, a porphyritic felsic volcanic unit, a volcaniclastic unit, and a mafic volcanic unit. U-Pb dating of zircon indicates that the age of the volcanic rocks is younger than 459 ± 3 Ma, and 40Ar/39Ar dating of mineralization-associated sericite indicates that the age of mineralization is 411 ± 3.7 Ma. Gold-mineralized zones occur in all the lithologic units but mainly in the porphyritic felsic volcanic unit. Gold zones are not controlled by individual faults but are characterized by high-density brittle fracturing, thin carbonate-quartz veining, and intensive ankerite-sericite alteration, superimposed on an earlier chlorite-calcite- quartz alteration. Gold is associated with arsenopyrite, which mostly occurs as disseminations in the host rocks, and to a lesser extent with quartz-carbonate-sericite veins and quartz-cemented breccias.Geochemical data indicate that mineralization-associated alteration is characterized by enrichment of K, Rb, Cs, Ca, Sr, Ba, As, Sb, W, C, and S. Fluid inclusion data indicate that the mineralizing fluids are composed of H2O, salts, and CO2 with variable amounts of N2 and CH4; salinities range from 2.3 to 10.6 eq. wt.% NaCl, but mainly from 2.3 to 5.6 eq. wt.% NaCl, and homogenization temperatures lie mainly between 220° and 270°C. Fluid pressures at the site of mineralization are estimated to have been 770 to 1200 bars, corresponding to a depth of 2.9 to 4.6 km at lithostatic pressure. The d18OSMOW and d13CPDB values of mineralization-related ankerite range from +14.5‰ to +16.5‰, and -6.8‰ to -8.3‰, respectively. The d18O values of the ore-forming fluids are estimated to be 6.4‰ to 8.3‰ at a temperature of 250°C. These carbon and oxygen isotope data fall in the field of magmatic fluids and in part the field of metamorphic fluids.Considering the geological setting of the region, abundant granitic intrusions, the similarity between the age of mineralization (411 ± 3.7 Ma) and the nearby Pokiok batholith (402-415 Ma), and the enrichment of granophile elements in mineralization-related alteration, the ore-forming fluids were probably derived from a granitic intrusion underneath the PMVC. These fluids were focused along structures related to the Woodstock fault. The Poplar Mountain gold occurrence might be compared to some granitic intrusion-related gold systems based on the geochemical data presented herein. Les trois unités principales du CVPM sont, de la base au sommet, une unité volcanique felsique porphyrique, une unité volcaniclastique et une unité volcanique mafique. "The Golden Manitou mine is in the northeast quarter of Bourlamaque township, Abitibi county, Quebec. During the summer of 1937 a body of gold-silver-zinc ore was outlined in a series of diamond drill holes located to the west of an old copper-zinc showing in the property of Quebec Manitou Mines, Limited. In 1938, a shaft was sunk and the orebody further explored from levels at depths of 210 and 360 feet.In 1941 the western half of the Quebec Manitou property was acquired by a new company, Golden Manitou Mines, Limited, and the installation of a mining and milling plant was at once undertaken. Milling started in August 1942. The following is a summary of production to December 31, 1946:The orebodies are sulphide replacements in a sericite schist shear zone. They vary in width from 8 feet to 65 feet and range in length up to 850 feet . Much of the ore is of the 'massive sulphides' type . The sulphide minerals in the ore are pyrite and sphalerite with minor quantities of .galena, tennantite, chalcopyrite, and arsenopyrite. Native silver (as wire and leaf silver) has been found in vugs and as coatings along fractures. In one section of the mine a few specks of gold were observed. Spectrographic analysis of ore samples has indicated the presence of zinc silicate."

"In the Little Long Lac-Sturgeon River area of Thunder Bay district, Ontario, most of the known ore deposits occur in fractures, shear zones, and zones of brecciation, in folded sedimentary rocks . In two or three instances, however, deposits occur in Keewatin greenstones and in later granitic rocks of probable Algoman age.The principal regional features in the area are the long narrow bands of Keewatin volcanic rocks and Timiskaming sedimentary formations that extend east from lake Nipigon to Long Lac, a distance of about 65 miles. The belts continue to the east for many miles beyond Long Lac and probably for some distance to the west under the waters of lake Nipigon. They are intruded in places, particularly in the north, by large masses of diorite, granodiorite, and granite. Small intrusive masses of diorite and porphyry also occur in many localities throughout the area.The Little Long Lac-Sturgeon River mining area is the youngest camp in Ontario and has been in production only since 1934.The district is readily accessible from the branch line of the Canadian National railway between Longlac station on the main line and Port Arthur, and from the Trans-Canada highway No. 17. Both these means of communication traverse the area in a general east-west direction parallel with the principal structural trend of the rocks of the region.In the Little Long Lac section discoveries were made by W. W. Smith in 1931 (Hard Rock property) , by T. A. Johnson in 1932 ( Bankfield property) , by T. A. Johnson and T. Oklend in 1932 (Little Long Lac property) , by F. MacLeod and A. OWING to the pressure of routine analyses at the laboratory during the past year, work of an investigational nature on water problems has been greatly curtailed. Favourable reports by the boiler inspectors indicate that the operators are giving satisfactory attention to feed-water treatment at the several . power plants. Some of the operators prefer lime and soda, others the phosphate and soda treatment. Springhill is still on the same commercial treatment as they were using last year, and satisfactory results are being obtained. This individual preference for a particular treatment, although it may be different for feed waters of similar nature, indicates that so long as proper conditions of alkalinity and concentration are maintained within the boiler, it is immaterial what chemicals are used in the treatment. This statement refers, of course, to the low-pressure boilers. In high-pressure boilers, a treatment such as lime and soda cannot be satisfactorily employed, on account of the precipitated calcium carbonate unduly increasing the amount of suspended matter. Only one case of impending trouble was reported during the year. That was at Seaboard, shortly after the new unit was placed in operation. Dissolved oxygen, considerably in excess of the permissible 0.030 cubic centimeters per liter, was detected at various points on the feed line. It was suspected that a de-aerating heater was being operated at too low a temperature, and chemical tests, made before and after the necessary adjustments, proved that this was the source of the trouble. While it has been impossible to give mine waters the attention they require, progress can be reported in the work carried out by the Mechanical Department. Past investigation of the action of mine water on various acid-resisting alloys is now bearing fruit, and it can safely be said that repair work on mine pumps has been reduced by nearly one-half.

The slag in iron ore pellets allows wet sintering during firing and leads to suitable bounding. The process of slag formation differs whether it takes place in the core or in the external zone of a pellet. In the core, hematite can be reduced to secondary hematite, depending on the temperature and on the carbon monoxide/dioxide partial pressure ratio. The reaction rim that appears at the outskirts of a silica particle in contact with the FeO bearing magnetite is considered as the slag precursor in the core of the pellet. By contrast, in the external zone of a pellet, where O2 is available and CO partial pressure is very low, the first step towards slag formation is flux decomposition, mainly dolomite and limestone. The CaO liberated through this reaction will be available to react with hematite by solid diffusion to form calcioferrites, which play an active part in the slag evolution process. These two slag formation paths will be explained.

"The Underground Research Laboratory (URL) is located in southeastern Manitoba, in the Lac du Bonnet granite batholith of the Canadian Shield. It was constructed by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) to conduct geotechnical research for the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program, assessing the concept of permanent disposal of nuclear fuel waste deep in plutonic rock.One of the primary objectives of the research program at the URL is to develop a nondestructive rock mass characterization method that can be used during siting, design and construction of a used fu el waste disposal vault. An experimental program was established to assess radar reflection profiling as a technique for fracture characterization in granite. The highly resistive, homogeneous nature of the Lac du Bonnet granite is ideal for the propagation of electromagnetic energy at the radar range of frequencies and water-filled fracture zones act as excellent reflectors because of their contrasting electrical properties.Radar reflection profiling was undertaken to characterize a major fracture zone located between 5 m and 10 m below Room 211 on the 240 m level of the URL. The profiling was done at a frequency of 120 MHz, on a 1m grid laid out on the bare rock floor of the room. Reflectors identified in the analog data were correlated between the profile lines, digitized, and a three-dimensional surf ace for each recognizable reflector was constructed. These surf aces were then compared with data obtained from the examination of numerous cores from adjacent boreholes intersecting the fracture zone. A very good correlation was found between the major radar reflectors and the most intensely fractured regions of the zone. Modelling studies also showed that a series of prominent shallow radar reflectors were caused by a borehole drilled close to Room 211."
