"How can the durability of asphalt pavement be doubled without increasing highway budgets? Asphalt containing asbestos can provide the desired performance with additional costs being made up by longer life. The addition of a low percentage of asbestos to an asphalt mix permits a higher asphalt content without any consequent loss in stability. It is mainly the higher asphalt content that provides improved performance and durability, although the fibrous reinforcement plays a key role in preventing the propagation of micro-fissures. "In recent years, computer based ""expert systems"" have been taking on large complex tasks for which no exact algorithmic solutions are feasible; tasks previously reserved for human experts requiring empirical knowledge, judgment, experience, developing a ""best solution "" by the use of plausible reasoning. Mining method selection is an appropriate area for the application of an expert system because extensive and detailed knowledge is required to make a ""best"" interpretaion of frequently ambiguous geological information. The expert system model presented here would enable users to apply expert knowledge to the evaluation of methods for coal deposits mineable by underground methods. IntroductionIn an increasingly complex and specialized world, human expertise spanning scientific, economic, social and political issues plays an increasingly important role in all branches of engineering. This is especially true of mining engineering. The number of scientific and professional disciplines involved in mine planning and evaluation, illustrates the problem. A conservative list includes geology, geophysics, geotechnics, hydrology, mining, environment, and economics.Engineers are almost obliged to be experts in at least one of the above disciplines if they are to handle the volume of information required in the planning process. Although computers have become indispensable tools in many endeavours, there is continued reliance on the human expert's ability to identify and synthesize these diverse factors, to form judgments, evaluate alternatives , and make decisions . This is especially true with regard to problems that are not easily amenable to precise formulations.The precious resource of human expert is also fragile and transient. The departure of a crucial expert from an organization ma y cause serious dislocations. Senior experienced people impart their knowledge of younger colleagues, but the demand for their talent may not leave sufficient time for such educational efforts. "The effect of sulfite and metabisulfite ions on the amyl xanthate flotation of copper-activated pyrite, in distilled water and seawater, has been studied by micro-flotation tests and redox potential measurements. The activation of pyrite was carried out varying copper ions concentration. It was found that in the presence of copper ions in solution, sulfite and metabisulfite are able to depress copper-activated pyrite at neutral or slightly acid pH. After the addition of sulfite or metabisulfite ions the resulting pH is more acidic with metabisulfite ions. A significant increase of the redox potential of the solution was observed as copper ions concentration increased. Then, the initial reducing conditions brought about by sulfite and metabisulfite ions, change abruptly to oxidizing conditions in the presence of copper ions. Under these oxidizing conditions, the metabisulfite showed to be an effective depressant for pyrite mainly in seawater. However, sulfite was a pyrite depressant in both distilled water and seawater. Based on these results, the pyrite depression by sulfoxy-depressants during the flotation of Cu/Mo ores in distilled water and seawater is discussed.INTRODUCTIONDepression of pyrite by sulfoxy-depressants (sulfite and metabisulfite) in the presence of copper ions is an important issue. This is particularly true when pyrite depression in the flotation of Cu/Mo sulfide ores is carried out in seawater. The use of lime in seawater must be avoided because the formation of magnesium hydroxy-complexes and precipitating magnesium hydroxide strongly depresses molybdenite flotation (Castro et al., 2014). In order to solve this problem, one large plant in Chile uses sodium metabisulfite (MBS) instead of lime to depress pyrite in seawater. In plant practice, this also improves molybdenite flotation since with the use of MBS the pyrite depression is carried out at pH 6-7, instead the pH 11-12 usually employed with lime.From a general point of view, pyrite exhibits some natural floatability over acidic pH ranges and may be partially floated without thiol collectors (a coating of sulfur/polysulfides has been claimed). Therefore, pyrite flotation with xanthates is usually high in the acidic pH region, but decreases greatly at alkaline pH (Leppinen, 1990; Fornasiero and Ralston, 1992; Zhang et al., 1997)."

Current trend of the global flow of strategic metals are analyzed to discuss the strategy of the development of recycling technology and alternative technology. In many cases, each global flow of metal is changing from the trilateral structure of U.S., EU and Japan in the later 20th century into the convergence to China as the factory of the world. Scrap flows are also changing dynamically. A long term change of prices of metal has gotten changed since the entrance of this century. The estimation of metal consumption up to 2050, in which the author estimated that many kinds of metal will overshoot the reserve base line, is revised considering these change of current trends.

"The decision to proceed with mine decommissioning, generally involves a number of complex and independent factors. These factors, including potential for re-opening, legal requirements, contingent liability, asset depreciation, due diligence, and public relations are discussed in the context of the financial implications on a net-present- value basis. It is concluded that the decision to delay mine decommissioning is commonly not in the best financial interests of the mine operator. Some measures to reduce decommissioning costs and expedite the process are presented.IntroductionThe primary audience for this paper is mining executives, although it should be of interest to all professionals involved in the planning and carrying out of mine decommissioning. Historically, mines were abandoned, not decommissioned. Then, as decommissioning became required, it was assumed that salvage revenue would pay for decommissioning. During the I980s, it became apparent that mine decommissioning costs would exceed salvage revenue for nearly all sites, and that a substantial net cost for decommissioning would be realized for some sites. Throughout this period, the approach to decommissioning has evolved through the sequential addition of measures to meet the increasing regulatory burden. This has resulted in a process in which the elements of decommissioning may not be optimized with respect to each other for the most favourable net present value to the corporation. Additional considerations which are not specific to mine decommissioning, such as environmental policy, due diligence and public relations, may now come to bear on the decision-making process.This paper addresses the issue of mine decommissioning as a three-step process. The first step involves identification and evaluation of all of the issues that relate to mine closure, the most importantof which is the potential for re-opening of a mine. Assuming that it is decided that a mine is unlikely to re-open, the second step is to determine when to carry out the decommissioning work. This aspect is examined through a net present value (NPV) approach. Finally, details regarding who does the work and how the various tasks are divided up must be resolved.Every mine is a unique concentration of minerals at some specific location, hence the development, operation and closure of a given mine must be regarded as a special case. Superimposed on the site-specific considerations are the size, history and financial status of the associated corporation."

Durant les années 1955 à 1961, plusieurs campagnes d?exploration ont été menées sur la zone Bond dans la partie sud-ouest de l?anneau nord de la carbonatite d?Oka (propriété de Niocan, figure 1). Les zones minéralisées HWM1 et HWM2 sont découvertes à l?ouest de la propriété. Un des forages, le S-60, avait intercepté 80 mètres de minéralisation à 0.71% Nb2O5 à l?est des zones HWM1 et HWM2 mais aucun autres travaux d?exploration n?avaient été réalisés sur cette interception minéralisée. En 1995, Niocan réalise une campagne de forage pour mieux définir la zone minéralisée recoupée par le forage S-60. En 1997, une seconde campagne de forage détermine un tonnage de 14.37 Mt avec une teneur de 0.66 % Nb2O5 pour la zone S-60 (Marcotte et Gagnon, 1997). Le complexe carbonatitique d'Oka se situe à environ 35 km à l?ouest de Montréal sur la rive nord du lac des Deux-Montagnes. Sa formation remonte au Crétacé précoce (entre 117 à 123 Ma). La carbonatite d?Oka fait partie de la suite d'intrusions alcalines que constituent les collines Montérégiennes. Le complexe a une forme allongée (7.2 km par 2.4 km) orientée NO-SE (figure 1). Il est intrusif dans des roches précambriennes constituées d?anorthosites au nord et de gneiss charnokitique au sud (Gold, 1963) appartenant à la Formation de la colline d?Oka. Les gneiss au contact du complexe sont fénitisés sur une épaisseur qui peut atteindre jusqu?à 60 mètres. Les roches carbonatitiques forment la série dominante du complexe et elles sont composées principalement de calcite (> 50 %) à gros grain et parfois rubanées. Les minéraux accessoires les plus communs sont la biotite, le pyroxène, la monticellite, la magnétite, l?apatite, la forstérite, la mélilite, le pyrochlore, la pérovskite, la niocalite, la pyrite et la pyrrhotite (Gold, 1963).

The selection and provision of mineralogical services to assist in developing a GeoMetallurgical program for a Cu Porphyry Mine in South America is covered in this paper and presentation. The objectives of the study were to provide a rapid mineralogical scoping protocol to support and confirm results of sequential Cu leach data and to provide detailed mineralogical analysis of four composites and products on which locked cycle test-work were performed. Results showed good reconciliation was achieved between measured chalcopyrite and secondary Cu mineral contents with leach data using a linear intercept mineralogical procedure by TIMA (Tescan Integrated Mineral Analyser), as well as a generally positive correlation between pyrite and Cu-sulphide grain size. Size-by-size analysis of Composite feeds and test products was used to outline comparisons between feeds on a mineralogical basis and provide liberation and association data with which to diagnose and better explain performance. Identifying key mineralogical drivers to Cu recovery and concentrate grades using these results, a greater understanding of the role of chalcocite and pyrite on metallurgical performance was established. INTRODUCTION As a global supply of copper, porphyry copper deposits are typically very large, often in excess of a billion tons of ore (Keeney, Walters, & Kojovic, 2011; McMillan & Panteleyev, 1980) with grades typically between 0.2 and 1.2% Cu, and up to 2% Cu in places. They are also a source of gold. The complexity of copper porphyries arises from their classically zoned nature, the type of host rock, as well as whether or not they have been overprinted by oxidation, weathering and supergene enrichment (Sillitoe, 2011). Zones of alteration and other geological attributes give rise to varied mineralogy, ore mineral textures and material properties, all of which result in different processing characteristics. Due to the interdependencies of geological and processing characteristics, it is vital to study links between the geology at the macro-scale and mineralogical features down to millimeter and micrometer scale (mineral content and texture) and their influences on mineral processing behaviour (Cropp, Goodall, & Bradshaw, 2013). The growing field of GeoMetallurgy aims to provide an Orebody Knowledge framework by which to gather such information as it pertains to: (1) Understanding and predicting likely flotation response; (2) Guiding relevant test work to investigate and validate links, interdependencies, theories and data interpretation/evaluation; (3) Populate a block model with relevant information and; (4) Implement and refine the model for ongoing optimization and control. Specific questions addressed by using mineralogy often include flotation diagnostics as aids to interpretation, causes of dilution and losses to tailings, as well as guidance to sampling for test work (Cropp et al., 2013).

To obtain sufficient material on which to perform copper-molybdenum separation testwork a variability set of drill hole reject samples amounting to several tons was put together to include the different ore types proportions expected in the copper circuit. The samples were treated in a copper circuit pilot plant and enough mass of bulk concentrate was recovered to conduct copper moly separation tests in the laboratory. Tests consisted of stage flotation reactor (SFR) rougher pilot plant tests, conventional laboratory rougher, cleaner and 4 stage open circuit cleaner tests. The mineralogical liberation analysis of the feed and concentrate was used to model the effect of liberation on the grade-recovery relationship of the different samples. Mineral kinetic parameters for the various samples were determined by calibration to the test data. The copper concentrate results as simulated from previous studies on the same deposit were used to simulate the variability in head grade and throughput expected for the feed to the copper molybdenum separation circuit for each of the first 10 years of production. This variation in feed was then simulated through the separation circuit to obtain optimised molybdenum grade recovery curves to forecast the circuit production for each of the first 10 years. INTRODUCTION Incorporating Geometallurgy into the design for a copper molybdenum separation is especially challenging due to the low mass of final concentrate typically produced during testwork. This is due to the low molybdenum head grades and high overall molybdenum upgrading expected. With molybdenum head grades of around 300 ppm, 1 tonne of copper circuit feed is expected to produce around 300 g of molybdenum concentrate in the plant. In the laboratory however, this may end up only resulting in a few grams. Obtaining sufficient mass for laboratory testing therefore requires starting with a large initial sample and careful testwork planning to maximise the utilisation of this mass. A testwork program was designed to investigate the effect of ore variability on the copper molybdenum separation circuit (here after referred to as the molybdenum circuit). Composite samples were selected to represent the various ore types, copper content, moly content, pyrite content and clay contents expected in the copper circuit feed. These samples were run through a bulk copper pilot plant to create the feed for the molybdenum testwork. The molybdenum testwork consisted of rougher kinetic flotation tests, rougher cleaner kinetic tests, rougher cleaner kinetic tests with regrind, stage flotation reactor (SFR) pilot plant tests, open circuit cleaner tests. These tests were used to calibrate the ore kinetics in the IGS-FLEET model for simulation of the molybdenum circuit performance.

"Experimental and pilot operations in bituminous sand processing require due care and attention in the design and analysis of measurement programs. This paper deals with a case study in experimental design and data analysis for a series of experimental campaigns that have been conducted over the past five years by Kilborn Western Inc., acting on behalf of Bitmin Resources. Beginning with the design of the experiment and following into the use of linear and nonlinear regression models, the phenomenology of bitumen extraction is illustrated. The final testing program tested 13 oil sand types as well as a wide range of process variables for all the unit operations of the complete process.The program was successful in developing process fundamentals and scale-up criteria. Several phenomenological models were proposed and tested. Their range of applicability was explored. This paper illustrates the range of applicability of these models and discusses the development of alternative models.IntroductionOver the past five years Kilborn has conducted a series of bench scale and pilot scale experiments designed to explore the phenomenolgy of a new concept in medium temperature processing of bituminous ores. These experiments at feed rates ranging from .1 to 24 t/h were conducted on water wet sands from the .Athabasca region near Fort McMurray. They were based on experimental designs chosen to provide a systematic means of identifying the response surfaces of the process over a range of conceptual designs. Coastal and marine mines affect the seabed?s biological resources, eg fisheries, when large volume wastes such as tailings are placed on the seabed, and by the extraction processes from marine mining. Worldwide monitoring of such effects for the past 30+ years now provides information to describe Best Practice design, construction and monitoring procedures. The critical environmental factors for submarine tailings placement (STP) are the selection of an appropriate deposition site and discharge depth, the deposition rate of the tailings, and the speed of biodiversity recovery to a sustainable ecological succession. These should be predictable at new sites using current modeling and experimental procedures. Prediction procedures are still needed to minimize potential destabilization of deposited tailings, and consequent biodiversity recovery setbacks. Comparable environmental information is needed from marine mining sites.

The Tartan Lake deposit 12 km northeast of Flin Flon, Manitoba, was discovered in March of 1984 during the investigation of a VLF anomaly. The discovery hole intersected 16.83 metres averaging 21 gm Au/tonne. Since then, 99 holes, over 21,000 metres, have been drilled outlining 419,491 tonnes grading 11.79 gm Au/tonne in a di stinct group of mineralized lenses referred to as the Main Zone. Three other mineralized zones are known on the property but no reserves have been allowed for these, the South , East and Base Line zones. The Main Zone consists of seven parallel, east-west striking, quartz lenses. The lenses dip steeply to the north and plunge steeply west to northwest. Lens number l strikes for 160m and extends vertically to the 90m level. Within th is lens there is a 60m interval of low grade materi al. Lens number 2 is located about 5-l0m within the foo twall of Lens number I. Near surface this lens stri kes for 40m, at 200m level the strike length increases to 200 m. To date the deepest mineralization on Lens 2 has been intersected at a vert ical depth of 527m. Five smaller lenses are located in the foo twall of Lens 2 , containing gold va lues similar to the two main lenses but erratically distributed. The South Zone, located 100m south of the Main Zone, strikes east-west fo r l00m above the 100m level. The East Zone, found 230m east of the Main Zone, strikes fo r 80m and may possibly be an ex tension of the South Zone. The Base Line Zone is located 275m south of the Main Zone. Sporadic, but very significant gold intersections have been obta ined1n all three zones. Gold-bearing quartz-ca rbonate tourmaline veins are generally confined to a silicous crystal tu ff hori zon. The crystal tuff exhi bits fi ve distinct types of alteration: silicification, sericitization, ca rbonati zation, chlorit ization and pyritization. Silicification has resulted in a perasive addition of silica and the generation of multiple quartz veins. Sericiti zation is restricted to the crystal tuff. All rock units are pervasively carbonatized . Ankerite is abundant in the quartz veins and within the shear zones, particul arly those located along the chilled margin of a nearby gabbro-diorite intrusion. Chloritization is widely spread th roughout the rock units, while pyritization fo rms a broad alteration halo associated with the orebody. Sulphide accesso ry minerals associated with the gold , whi ch fo r the most part appears to be free, are chalcopyrite and pyrite. Generally, the higher grade gold values are related to an increased content of sulphides in the qua rtz veins. The average sulphide content in the deposit is less than 5 %.

"Loss of coal fines in reject slurries limits the yield of coal cleaning operations. Difficulties in handling fines also limit the extent of physical cleaning in treating coals with finely-disseminated impurities. Selective oil agglomeration allows even extreme fines to be processed and offers some novel approaches for coal cleaning and utilization.The oil agglomeration process for the recovery and beneficiation of fine and ultrafine coal has now been commercialized by the Chemical Engineering Section/Chemistry Division of the National Research Council (NRC). This paper describes these activities to apply oil agglomeration and related fine coal technologies on an industrial scale. Pilot plant and large scale results are described, as well as aspects of agglomerate utilization in both wet and dry form."

"Radioactive minerals are found together with the more familiar ore minerals in veins, gossans, and pegmatites, Since they have a peculiar property, that of giving off penetrating radiation, the simplest means of field detection is by the use of some radiation detector.The two principal radioactive elements one may encounter are uranium and thorium. These may occur separately or together. At present there is very little demand for thorium and hence radioactive occurrences should be examined with some care to determine which element is present. To do this it may be necessary to have a chemical analysis made of samples from the occurrence. Uranium minerals that do not carry appreciable thorium have a conventional occurrence in quartz or carbonate veins. They are distinctive in appearance. Pitchblende, the principal ore, is hard, black, and very heavy. It weathers readily to soft, powdery minerals •brilliantly coloured orange, yellow, and sometimes green. It may be associated with familiar minerals such _as native silver, nickel-cobalt sulphides and arsenides, chalcopyrite, and hematite.It is the purpose of this paper to review very briefly the types of radiation detectors available .and to draw some general conclusions as to the types most suitable for particular applications.The highly penetrating gamma radiation is the most useful for detection of radioactive mineralization. The alpha rays have little or no penetration, and beta rays are stopped by thicknesses of a millimeter or so of material. We shall confine our remarks principally to those instruments intended to detect gamma radiation. These are of three types."

"The Gondor Zn-Ag-Pb-Cu deposit is a stratabound massive sulphide lens occurring within Archean volcaniclastic rocks of the Yellowknife Supergroup. The deposit is located in the west-central portion of the Slave Structural Province, approximately 350 km north of Yellowknife.Initial diamond drilling at Gondor has outlined a steeply dipping, L-shaped, folded, massive sulphide body, which may be traced over a strike length of approximately 800 m, and to a depth of 350 m. True widths of up to 40 m have been intersected in the thickest part of the deposit. Preliminary estimates suggest that the deposit contains a minimum of 7.5 million tonnes grading 6% Zn, 50 g/tonne Ag and less than I% combined Cu and Pb. In addition, significant gold, grading up to 2.8 g/tonne, occurs in some parts of the deposit. The mineralization is open both down-dip and along strike.The Gondor deposit lies conformably within a predominantly east-west striking, north-facing sequence of felsic to intermediate volcaniclastic rocks. Coarse fragmental rocks are abundant in the hanging wall, whereas ash and lapilli-tuffs predominate in the footwall. The main structural feature in the area is a large-scale, steeply northeast-plunging, Z-shaped fold. The sulphide mineralization lies within the synformal portion of this fold, with the thickest part of the deposit coinciding with its hinge zone. Several episodes of faulting have also affected the local stratigraphy.The wallrocks of the Gondor deposit were hydrothermally altered prior to the onset of medium-grade regional metamorphism. A halo of altered rocks surrounds the massive sulphide lens, with no apparent difference in the degree of alteration between the hanging wall and footwall strata. The alteration zone is characterized by the addition of MgO and K20 and by the depletion of Na20 and CaO. These changes are reflected in the mineralogy of the altered wallrocks by local enrichment in chlorite, biotite, muscovite and cordierite.The mineralized zone is medium- to coarse-grained, well-banded and is composed largely of pyrite, quartz, and sphalerite with subordinate galena and chalcopyrite. Preliminary studies of metal distribution indicate that a lateral zonation is present, with lead enrichment in the central part of the deposit, and copper enrichment toward both ends. Stringer-type copper mineralization has not yet been discovered in the footwall of the Gondor deposit."

In the present paperwork is proposed an economical-mathematical model (fuzzy) that aims optimize the technological variants of the mechanized coal face. By fuzzification, the issues to solve become more flexible and allow the decision maker to acquire more variants for the functions objectively established. The description of technological solutions is carried out by a set of controllable variables of "category" type by which the type of the machinery is defined within the frame of the actual geological & mining conditions. In the paperwork are used concepts of "successions graph" and "matrix of compatibilities"; with their help a methodology to choose between different technological variants of coalfaces is proposed. It treats the problem of developing the functions that express the membership degree in vague concept. In the end it is presented an assessment procedure for the technological variants of mechanized coal face.

"Most of the lode and placer gold production in the Canadian Cordillera has been derived from mines and placers in the Intermontane and Omineca belts. Gold has been produced from rocks of Precambrian to Eocene age, but the preferred host environment contains Upper Paleozoic to Upper Jurassic eugeosynclinal or arc-type sedimentary and volcanic rocks adjacent to plutonic complexes which have a wide variety in both size and composition. Auriferous quartz lodes occur in fissures and shear zones which are commonly subsidiary to strong fault zones. In common with most vein-type deposits, structural complexities are an essential part of the mine environment.Gold production from the Canadian Cordillera to the end of 1978 totals 35.0 million ounces, of which 47 per cent has been produced from placer mining, principally in the Klondike and Cariboo districts. The balance has been derived from lode gold (80 per cent) and base metal (20 per cent) mines.Gold reserves in producing mines and deposits committed for production as of January 1, 1978 were 87.4 tons, or 21.6 per cent of total Canadian gold reserves contained in all types of deposits. Although more than 100 lode mines have operated in the Canadian Cordillera since the turn of the last century, over 75 per cent of the lode gold produced by 1978 was recovered from five mining camps, namely the Rossland, Hedley, Bridge River, Premier and Barkerville.The average grade of the principal producers in these camps was about 0.45 ounce of gold per ton. Individual camps yielded from 3 to 8 million tons during their operating lives, which varied from 28 to 43 years. The last of these mines ceased operating in 1971.Most of the total lode gold production has been derived from quartz veins, frequently with associated carbonate and ankerite, occupying fractured and faulted zones in Mesozoic volcanic and sedimentary rocks closely associated with a variety of intrusions. A review of the literature suggests that several deposits may have evolved by remobilization of ore constituents from earlier concordant gold-bearing formations. The principal metallic minerals in the deposits are native gold, electrum, tellurides, pyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite.As the mineralogy suggests, many of the Cordilleran lode gold deposits have yielded important co-products or byproducts, including silver, copper, lead, zinc, cadmium and tungsten. Significant by-product gold production has also been derived from porphyry copper, volcanogenic, replacement and pyrometasomatic deposits, particularly in recent years.No major lode gold discovery has been made in the past 67 years, although little exploration activity for gold has taken place during the last 30 years. Several relatively small lode gold and gold replacement deposits have been discovered in recent years, either serendipitously (Chappelle) or on very low initial budgets (Northair and Carolin). Based on well-established precedents, one or more of these may eventually be developed into a large mine.A detailed study of the Canadian Cordillera gold deposits based on recent genetic models could prove rewarding, not only in up-dating information on their origin and depositional characteristics, but in stimulating the search for undiscovered gold deposits, in the Cordillera and other parts of Canada."

Located North of Williams Lake British Columbia, Gibraltar Mine is the fourth largest open pit Copper mine in North America. Gibraltar commenced Copper concentrate production in 1972 with a mill throughput rate of 30,000 tons per day. A series of expansion projects, including installation of a second SAG mill with variable speed drives in 2013, has increased mill throughput to 85,000 tons per day. Over the past 24 months, Gibraltar Mine in partnership with Spartan Controls has executed several advanced process control programming projects culminating in the implementation of a Continuous Speed Controller (CSC) for the most recently installed SAG mill. This paper covers development and results for the SAG mill speed controller. INTRODUCTION In January 2016, the price of Copper fell below $2.00 USD per pound, the lowest price in 7 years. Gibraltar Mine faced a significant challenge; how to maximize profit in an environment where capital spending was not an option. An opportunity was quickly identified to improve performance through increased automation and advanced control of the grinding processes. Beginning in March 2016, Gibraltar Mine partnered with Spartan Controls to introduce Advanced Process Control (APC) to the grinding circuits. The collaboration between metallurgical and process control engineering disciplines proved to be effective for achieving gains in throughput, reliability and productivity for the mill process. The Gibraltar milling facilities include 2 grinding-flotation plants for concentration of chalcopyrite ore with throughput rates of 58,000 tons per day (Concentrator 1) and 38,000 tons per day (Concentrator 2). Each of the two concentrators has a 34’ diameter SAG mill powered by 2 GE 4800 kW synchronous electric motors. For SAG 1 (in concentrator 1), power is transmitted through 2 Eaton Airflex clutches. For SAG 2 (in concentrator 2), the motors are driven by 2 TMEIC Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs). All programming is done using DeltaV, which Gibraltar uses as its Distributed Control System (DCS) and Human Machine Interface (HMI).

Laboratory testing examined the effect of a variety of intrinsic rock properties and environment conditions that influence the adhesive bond between rock and thin spray-on liners. The liner materials used for these tests were Tekflex, provided by Fosroc, Castonite, provided by Rohms and Haas Co., Rockweb provided by Spray-on Plastics, and CS 1251 2K, provided by Master Builders. Some of the variables examined include: rock strength (tensile/compressive strength) rock mineralogy, rock surface roughness (grain size, fracture/joint roughness), and surface contamination (oil, water or dust). Under optimal conditions, adhesive strengths reaching at least 3 MPa can be achieved. Where the rock surface is contaminated with dust or the rock is weak in tension, it may be difficult to reach adhesion strengths of 1 to 1.5 MPa.
