"The smelter is described by area; feed preparation, continuous furnace line, gas handling and auxiliary systems, blister refining, Hazelett casting of thin anodes, and scrap remelting. Early smelter campaign data is presented and compared to design. Some modifications to the basic design of the furnaces and gas trains are indicated, with their respective impacts on improving smelter performance.Plant compactness, the use of jumbo tanks, and a highly automated electrode handling system are featured in the refinery description, with brief coverage of the liberator and slimes leaching sections. Early experience in refining thin regular Hazelett anodes, and submersible pump recovery of raw slimes are relayed, together with automatic stripping from titanium blanks.Refinery tonnages and operating parameters are given showing the relatively trouble-free attainment of refinery design performance.IntroductionPrevious papers and articles ( 1), (2) ,(3 ) have described the metallurgical facilities serving the copper-zinc-silver Kidd Creek orebody located near Timmins, Ontario. The process of gas purging in molten aluminium has been an industrial practice in Europe for many years. The advantages are a reduction in the hydrogen content and impurities in the melt, as well as a homogenisation of the temperature and chemical analysis in the molten metal. Formerly used lances or impellers are being replaced by porous plugs which are installed at the bottom of the furnace. This special product of RHI Refractories has proven its efficiency in primary melting as well as in die cast, sheet and extrusion plants.

We have studied the interaction of NO with the quasi-hexagonally reconstructed Au(100) surface. Using variable temperature scanning tunneling microscopy we have observed formation of the unreconstructed phase of Au(100) after NO exposure. This NO adsorption induced phase transition is observed in a window of temperatures around 170 K. Under the same conditions, CO and O2 cannot drive the phase transition, suggesting weaker interaction. Thermal desorption spectroscopy experiments provide an estimate for the strength of NO chemisorption on Au(100) of 57 ± 4 kJ mol-1.

Maximizing benefits generated by separation plants in the mineral processing industry is of prime importance. To achieve this goal, observers and controllers are both key tools playing a crucial role for economic optimization. Although these methods have been widely discussed in the literature and that numerous applications have been reported, coupling the different algorithms raises practical challenges. The economic function definition, the selection of the real-time optimization structure, the elaboration of observer and controller models, the controller development, and the tuning of stochastic and deterministic parameters strongly influence economic performances. The objective of the paper is to discuss the major difficulties related to the implementation of a real-time optimization system and highlight the benefits of linking data reconciliation and model predictive control for a simulated flotation plant. A systematic topdown approach is used to go through the main design phases and to comment on the different options available for the development of the optimization structure. An internal model predictive controller coupled with a stationary observer is applied for the direct optimization of a three-stage flotation plant simulator based on a phenomenological model. The results show performance improvements in terms of increased revenues brought by reduced grade variability and collector consumption. The discussion also proposes alternative avenues that could be taken to achieve comparable improvements. Finally, since the limited simulated case-study cannot provide a complete understanding of the benefits brought by a data reconciliation observer, recommendations for industrial applications, which are more complex, are provided to promote effective implementations.

A program of geochemical till prospecting, carried out by Derry, Michener & Booth in 1974, was instrumental in t~ e discovery of a copper deposit in Currie Township, Ontario, beneath thick lacustrine deposits of the Abitibi Clay Belt. The prospecting system involved the continuous collection of glacial sands and gravels beneath the clays, using a track-mounted, dual-tube rotary drill, and the separation and geochemical analysis of the heavy mineral content for Cu, Zn, Pb, Ag and Au. In one of 22 holes drilled down-ice from nine Canadian Nickel airborne EM conductors, fragments of chalcopyrite-bearing graphitic argillite, assaying 12% Cu, were recovered from a 14-foot gravel section beneath 83 feet of clay. Ultimately, mineralization was identified in 10 of 11 additional holes drilled up to 3,000 feet down-ice from the Currie deposit. The glacial fan, when compared to the 1,200- by 165-ft area of the subcropping mineralization, is at least 20 times the area of the deposit and is the result of glacio-fluvial reworking of the mineralized ground moraine. The Currie deposit is contained within a Keewatin succession of graphitic argillite, dacite tuff and graywacke, which is intruded by dacite and feldspar porphyry sills and dykes and truncated by a Keweenawan diabase dyke. Grade and thickness of the mineralization, which lies chiefly within the argillite, is related to felsic intrusives and hydrothermal alteration, and to fold hinges.

"A comparative study of sulphide textures has been carried out on samples from four Archean copper-zinc massive base metal sulphide deposits: Kidd Creek, Ontario; Lake Dufault -Norbec, Quebec; Hood River-41, N. W. T.; and Geco, Ontario. These deposits have undergone metamorphic recrystallization under a range of conditions, and results of this study indicate that certain sulphide textures may be used as qualitative indicators of metamorphic grade, whereas other cannot.The sulphide textures of most value in this regard are sulphide grain sizes, which increase with increasing metamorphic grade, and the presence or absence of sedimentary/diagenetic textures, which are destroyed at the lower amphibolite facies of metamorphism. Chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite intergrowths in sphalerite increase in size, in degree of coalescence and in the ratio of unmixed pyrrhotite to chalcopyrite inclusions with increasing metamorphic rank. With increased metamorphic grade, the pyrrhotite intergrowths change from rounded inclusions on grain boundaries to rod-like shapes along sphalerite twin planes. There is also a general increase in the relative proportion of pyrrhotite in the deposits. Textures that appear to have little value as indicators of metamorphic grade are sulphide deformation textures, and triple junction point angles and their standard deviations, which show little variation from the lower greenschist to the upper amphibolite facies of metamorphism. The presence or absence of myrmekite-like magnetite also has little value in determining the relative metamorphic history of these deposits, as it is a product of local contact metamorphism."

"Recent amendments to the so-called ""flow-through share"" rules in our income tax legislation have given a new lease on life to this once popular investment vehicle.The original ""Dome funds"" for exploration in the Beaufort sea recognized the usefulness of flow-through share arrangements, but, by and large, flow-through shares have until recently not been able to compete effectively with other tax shelter instruments-mainly , limited partnership interests.This month, Tax Notes examines the new tax rules for investing in flow-through shares.IntroductionRecent income tax amendments have helped to rekindle investor and industry interest in so-called ""flow-through shares"" as a mechanism for mobilizing funds toward mineral exploration and development activities. In competing for investment funds, flow-through shares have historically placed a distant second in terms of investor popularity, being unable to compete with the more attractive features of limited partnership arrangements. However, primarily as a result of favourable changes to the income tax law, flow-through shares may be well poised for a comeback.This article examines the income tax considerations pertaining to issuing and investing in flow-through shares, and compares the former and the new income tax rules relating thereto. Of course, inasmuch as a flow-through share issue can involve various contractual arrangements between the investor and the issuer, there is a wide range of legal and business factors that generally have to be taken into account. A discussion of these matter s is beyond the scope of this paper, which is restricted to a summary of the special income tax factors attributable to flow-through shares."

"Since the late 1970s, a major R&D program has been under way in Canada to assess the concept of disposing of nuclear fuel wastes in deep plutonic rock. Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd . (AECL), a federally-owned corporation, has been given the responsibility of directing this research (Rummery et al., 1983).The Underground Research Laboratory (URL), constructed in a granite pluton 15 km east of Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba (Fig. 1) is a major component of the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program. A diverse geotechnical experimental program is being carried out during both the construction and operating phases of the URL. This program involves detailed geological mapping, rock mechanics and hydrogeology studies, and geophysical surveying, to characterize the rock mass surrounding the shaft, and it has been described by Simmons et al. (1983). As part of the construction-phase program, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys are being carried out during excavation, in an attempt to delineate fractures both ahead of the excavation and behind the walls of the excavation. This paper presents the results of surveys performed during shaft excavation and describes a procedure for plotting the data.Ulricksen (1982) cites examples of radar surveys to evaluate surficial deposits, such as peat, sands and gravels, and cavity detection in subsurface hard rock. Fowler (1981) used radar for fracture and clay vein detection in coal seams.In Canada, pioneering work in GPR has been done by Annan and Davis since the mid-seventies (Annan and Davies, 1976). Their work concentrated on problems relating to permafrost in the Arctic ."

"A mineralogical and trace element analysis was performed on the Küre historical slags in order to evaluate the possible recovery of copper and cobalt. Reflected light microscopy, electron microprobe and image analysis were combined to determine the Cu and Co distribution in the slag.The results indicate that 81% of the total cobalt is chemically combined in the fayalite whereas only 3.4% is in the mechanically entrapped sulphides. The remainder being in hercynite and wiistite. On the other hand, 95% of the total copper is in the sulphide phase.This kind of applied mineralogical investigation gives invaluable information when it is performed preliminary to metallurgical experiments.IntroductionThe recycling of metallurgical slags is a growing business. The operation is directed toward recovering base metals (Cu, Pb, Zn), and by-products (Floyd and Mackey, 1981).Two reasons are invoked to explain metallic losses in slags: (1) mechanical entrapment of matte globules in the silicate melt; and (2) chemically combined metals in the slag-forming phases. Obviously, a chemical analysis of the slag cannot distinguish between those two modes. Grinding and flotation of the liberated sulphides have often been used to evaluate the importance of mechanical entrapment (Mechev, 1970; Imris , 1982).Recent studies in applied mineralogy of pyrometallurgical products (Bérubé et al., 1987; Pignolet et al., 1986) have demonstrated the benefits of quantitative mineralogical analyses of slags. Optical microscopy together with electron microprobe and image analysis offers a powerful and easy way of quantifying the relative importance of mechanical and chemical losses."

The outstanding thermal and chemical stability, excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility of zirconia have made this material an important candidate for fabrication of advanced protective coatings on metals, graphite, carbon fibers and biomedical implants. Nanostructured polymer-ceramic composite films containing zirconia were synthesized on metallic substrates by combining cathodic electrosynthesis of inorganic particles with electrophoretic deposition of cationic polyelectrolytes. Thick crack-free oxide and composite coatings were obtained using this newly developed technique. The deposits were studied by thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The mechanisms of deposition are discussed.

"Significant capacity increases to meet new production demands can often be fulfilled through debottlenecking of an existing production facility, rather than the more expensive option of building new plants and facing new environmental and infrastructure challenges. To achieve that goal, it is important to model and calculate the existing ultimate capacity of each processing plant area, and that of each key equipment sector within the plant areas. This paper describes a methodology of how process modeling tools can be used to simulate the processing steps, how to estimate their existing and ultimate capacities, and how to determine the sweet-spots (minimum cost points) for a plant expansion – leading to a road map of the subsequent debottlenecking project implementation.The debottlenecking technique is presented through a generic work-flow narrative which can be applied to different mineral processing studies, starting with establishment of heat-and-mass balances, drawing a bottleneck diagram, brainstorming capacity increase options, and preparing a cost-capacity curve. Hatch has successfully applied this technique to a number of plant capacity studies, with great benefits to our industrial clients.INTRODUCTIONWith the softening of the metals and minerals prices, and the escalated costs of building new processing plants, it is now economically more viable to improve and debottleneck the existing facilities, rather than build new ones. However, spending new money on old plants requires careful considerations, in order to identify the most economically advantageous incremental steps of improvement and the best potential returns on investment. Process modeling, hand in hand with plant measurements, can identify the best scenarios to balance the three aspects of plant capacity (nameplate, utilization and yield), both at the global and the individual system and subsystem levels."

"Concerns about using microdiamonds for resource estimation have been raised by workers because multiple diamond populations exist in many parts of the mantle source region, small diamonds in kimberlite could be exposed to proportionately greater levels of resorption and modification, and euhedral microdiamonds could crystallize immediately prior to kimberlite eruption. This paper addresses these concerns; discusses the geology of the mantle, the principal diamond host rocks, and the impact of mantle processes; compares micro- and macrodiamond properties and features; and outlines steps to identify and mitigate the risk of diamond resorption and its impact on the diamond grade-size relationship.RÉSUMÉ Des travailleurs se sont interrogés sur l’utilisation de microdiamants pour estimer la ressource; en effet, de multiples populations de diamants existent dans plusieurs secteurs de la région source dans le manteau. Des petits diamants dans la kimberlite pourraient être exposés à des niveaux proportionnellement supérieurs de résorption et de modification; de plus, des diamants idiomorphes pourraient cristalliser immédiatement avant l’éruption de la kimberlite. Ventilation measurements were carried out in a shallow underground-quarry space with relatively large internal volume of 14,600 m3 in order to evaluate its effective ventilation characteristics. Based on air velocity measurements with an ultrasonic anemometer in the exhaust airway connected to the space, it was found that the space was ventilated by natural ventilation airflow with intermittent changes in direction. It was difficult to measure the ventilation flow with typical methods of flow measurement provided from the intake portal and throughout the mine, because the cross-sectional area and volume of the openings were too large and the flow was variable. In the present study, a tracer gas method was applied to evaluate the effective ventilation airflow rate in the space. A photo-acoustic infra-red gas monitor, highly sensitive to SF6 gas used as a tracer gas, was set in the space to determine air exchange rates from gas concentration-time decay curves. The seasonal variations of airflow and thermal environment in the space were investigated through 13 sets of measurements taken over 15 months. Airborne rock dust concentrations were also measured at same time in the opening. The correlations between the effective ventilation airflow rate, thermal environment and dust concentrations in the opening space were analyzed and are discussed based on the presented measurements taken during year. It is concluded that seasonal variations in effective ventilation flow and the dust concentration are mainly due to differences in air temperature in the space, as affected by the rock?s surface temperature and atmospheric temperature. In summertime, the air temperature and associated air density difference generated lower natural ventilation flows resulting in higher dust concentrations.

"The cost of energy is a growing factor in the cost of zinc production. Electrowinning from sulphate solutions with periodical reverse current or from acidic chloride or alkaline solutions could be the way to lower costs. A comparison of the energy consumption for electrolysis shows that the alkaline solution may be considered the most promising alternative. IntroductionZinc electrowinning from sulphate solutions is a very energy intensive process (typical specific energy usage : around 3.1 kWh / kg zinc). This energy consumption represents 35% of the total cost of electrolysis and is the most important cost component.In order to lower costs, the energy efficiency of the sulphate process should be improved or alternative processes should be developed. In this laboratory, that objective has resulted in research on electro winning in sulphate solutions with the use of periodical reverse current (PRC) and in acidic chloride and alkaline solutions.Some of the results obtained in this laboratory and already published and new experimental results reported in this paper make it possible to present a more critical comparison of the energy consumption of the three processes mentioned.ExperimentalThe experiments at constant current were carried out as described previously. Specific conditions are indicated in Table I. Current efficiencies were obtained by weighing deposits.ResultsThe best energy consumptions for electrolysis obtained in this laboratory for the three media are presented in Table I. More detailed results can be found in the papers already mentioned."

"A brief history of previous mining activity on Coal Mountain, near Corbin, British Columbia, is followed by a description of the steps leading up to the resumption of mining in /974 by Byron Creek Collieries. New developments, including a preparation plant, a rail spur and a totally enclosed facility, as well as operating techniques, are also discussed. IntroductionThe Corbin Mine of Byron Creek Collieries Limited is located in southeastern British Columbia, approximately 110 air miles southwest of Calgary (Fig. I), 15 miles south of Highway 3 via a newly constructed provincial road (Fig. 2). Development of the area began on July 30, 1905, when D.C. Corbin, a prominent businessman from the northwestern U.S., and his associate E.J . Robert s, first visited the site of Coal Mountain on horseback. Coal was in great demand by railways and other industrial users, so the Corbin Coal and Coke Co. , after acquiring 15,000 acres of land in the area , began to develop a mine.F.J. Roberts was responsible for the construction of the 14-mile rail spur, the Eastern British Columbia Railway, which joined the mine to the CPR main line at the McGillivray Loop. Rail access to the mine and its developing community, Corbin, B.C., was completed in September 1908, the same year that the first underground mine began production.The Corbin Coal and Coke Co. operated six mines on Coal Mountain (Fig. 3), and production from 1908 to 1930 inclusive totalled 2,337,800 tons. This production was allocated to the mines as shown in Table 1. No.3, 4 and 6 mines were operated intermittently from 1931 to 1935."

"Resin-anchored rebar is commonly used for rock support in mining. The rock properties and environment determine the average bond strength, allowing mine engineers to select the appropriate length and installation pattern for the support. In weak material such as potash, the average bond strength tends to be lower than for a typical hard-rock installation. Determining the failure mechanism by which the support fails in soft-rock applications could lead to improved bond strength and better calculated installed support capacity. This paper reports on research conducted at a potash mine in Saskatchewan and analyzes the failure mechanism of the support.RÉSUMÉ Dans les mines, les barres d’armature enduites de résine sont fréquemment utilisées pour soutenir le roc. L’environnement et les propriétés du roc déterminent la résistance moyenne d’adhésion, permettant ainsi aux ingénieurs miniers de choisir la longueur de barre appropriée et le diagramme d’installation du soutien. In this work, short and long-term tests were performed using different massive mineral sulfide specimens (chalcopyrite, pyrite, sphalerite, galena, covellite and chalcocite) of museum grade and quartz of analytical grade in an acid medium containing silver ions. After attack, the samples were observed by SEM and products characterized by EDS. Parallel, massive specimens of pyrite (FeS2) and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) were embedded in an epoxy resin, either electrically isolated or in electrical contact, and treated with silver ions in the presence of bacteria. Finally, massive chalcopyrite and pyrite electrodes were subjected to electrochemical measurements in an acid medium under different experimental conditions (addition of silver ions and inoculation). The results showed that silver deposition takes place preferentially on specific mineral surfaces: chalcopyrite, galena, covellite and chalcocite. The chemical reaction of silver ions with pyrite and sphalerite was negligible at low silver concentration (8 ppm). But sphalerite reacted with silver ions at higher silver concentration (100 ppm). In a mixture of chalcopyrite and pyrite, silver was deposited on the former surface creating new cathodic sites which sped up the electrochemical reactions of chalcopyrite dissolution.

Weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth ore is a specific rare earth resource in China that is rich in middle and heavy rare earths. From surface to bottom, the weathered crust elution-deposit rare earth ores can be divided into humic layer, completely weathered layer, partly weathered layer, and bedrock. The exchangeable rare earth ions mainly exist in the completely weathered layer and partly weathered layer, and the exchangeable aluminum ions mainly exist in the humic layer. A novel solution injection method for use in the in-situ leaching technology of weathered crust elution-deposit rare earth ores was put forward based on the different distributions of RE3+ and Al3+ in the four layers. Avoiding the humic layer, only the completely weathered layer and partly weathered layer were leached by controlling the height of the leaching solution liquid level. In this way aluminum, the primary impurity in the RE leaching solution, can be decreased and the purity of the RE product can be improved. Meanwhile, the choices of available leaching reagents were broadened and the possibility of landslide disasters could be reduced.
