Discussion of the laws bearing upon the economics of mining in this province at once resolves itself under three headings: (a) The rights and obligations of holders of mineral bearing lands; (b) Taxation of mines; (c) Regulation of methods adopted in financing mining operations. Titles: The law relating to titles is contained in the Mineral Act, Placer Mining Act and Coal Mines Prospecting Act. Origin: Mining laws in force in this province and elsewhere on the continent had their origin in the rule-of-thumb regulations adopted by prospectors themselves, when, far from the centres of civilization and the seats of the courts of justice, they found it necessary, for mutual protection, to fix the conditions of possession by right of location, and to prescribe the duties to be performed in order to enable the individual to maintain his ground against all comers. These regulations have been codified and added to by legislatures, until we find adequate protection and safeguard to property in the laws of this province.

"Improving geological and geophysical evaluation should serve to reduce the early-stage risk assessment and there-by contribute to exploration expenditure stimulation. The limitations of present-day methods are reviewed, particularly as to anomaly causes, depth penetration and quantitative physical interpretative abilities. Some of the problems now under study are discussed. Future developments expected include the treatment of quantitized geologic and geophysical data, as well as continuing attempts toward computerized interpretation."

"1N 1951, the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation, as part of a programme of modernization in their coal mining operations at Sydney Mines and Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, undertook the development of two large cross-measure tunnels, which were to be used for the purpose of raising the coal from the underground workings by conveyor belts direct to wash plants located on the surface.These tunnels were to reach from the surface to central loading points underground located at a depth of 600 and 900 feet, respectively. They were to be driven on a pitching gradient of 11 degrees to the horizontal, and they were to reach a length of 3,600 feet in the Sydney Mines area and 10,000 feet in the Glace Bay area.The longer tunnel, 19 feet in diameter, was driven a distance of 1,500 feet and, for domestic reasons, bas not yet been •completed. The other tunnel, in the Sydney Mines area, 18 feet in diameter, is steel supported and concreted throughout its entire length. This tunnel has been completed and will be in operation at an early date.The development of this particutar tunnel posed an additional problem, as the rock through which it had to pass was considered to be water-bearing. In the sinking of Princess Colliery shafts in 1866, a great deal of water had been encountered, and it had been necessary, while sinking, to line the shaft with cast-iron tubbing through the water-bearing strata. The shaft had to be lined for a depth of 300 feet at the upper end. It was anticipated that we would meet with difficulty in driving the tunnel through this strata."

"Abstract-The ""Brunswick Horizon"" an informally named ore-bearing unit near the top of the Nepisiguit Falls Formation in the Ordovician Tetagouche Group, hosts the Brunswick No. 6 and No. 12 base-metal mines, as well as the former Austin Brook iron mine, in northern New Brunswick. Detailed structural analysis of the No. 6 and No.12 mines led to the prediction that a massive­ sulfide deposit may have been repeated by F1 folding along the Brunswick Horizon. A subsequent drilling program discovered the new massive-sulfide North End Zone at a vertical depth of 1100 m, 1 km north of the No. 12 underground workings. By the end of 1990, Zn-Pb-rich massive sulfides had been delineated over a strike length of 200 m and a down-dip extent of 170 m. Rock units intersected in the North End Zone are generally thinner and vary somewhat from those at the Brunswick No. 12 mine. Thinning of the hanging wall rocks may be primary, may result from attenuation along F2 folds, or may represent truncation by a thrust fault. The newly discovered sulfide zone indicates that significant potential exists for the discovery of other deposits at previously unexplored depths.SOMMAIRE-Dans le nord-est du Nouveau-Brunswick ""l'horizon Brunswick"" est le nom usuel de la zone qui contient les mines de métaux de base Brunswick No. 6 et No. 12, ainsi que l'ancienne mine de fer Austin Brook, toutes situées sur le dessus de la Formation ""Nepisiguit Falls"" dans le Groupe Tetagouche d'âge Ordovicien. Une analyse détaillée de la structure des mines No. 6 et No. 12 à permis a van Staal de prédire qu'un gîte de sulfures massifs pourrait se répéter dû à une déformation F1, au nord de Brunswick No. 12. Suite à un programme de forage, la nouvelle zone de sulfures massifs appelée le ""North End Zone"", profonde de 1100 rn, et à une distance d'un km au nord des chantiers souterrains, fut découverte vers la fin de l'année 1990, les sulfures massifs riches en Zn-Pb ont été délimités sur une longueur de 200 rn et une hauteur de 170 rn le long du pendage. Les unités de roches intersectées dans le ""North End Zone"" sont généralement plus minces et sont quelque peu différentes de celles de la mine Brunswick No. 12. L'amin­ cissement des roches pourrait être primaire ou être le résultat de l'atténuation le long des plis F2, ou soit tronqué par une faille. La nouvelle découverte d'une zone de sulfures indique un potentiel énorme pour la découverte d'autres g ""tes à ces profondeurs inexplorées."

The choice of fan type (axial flow, centrifugal or mixed flow) most suited for a mine ventilation application depends on a number of technical and economic factors. For each project, the relative importance of these factors will vary. It is worthwhile to carry out an assessment on a case by case basis. The paper, by discussing a number of technical and economic factors and their interactions, will provide the ventilation official a methodology to easily and methodically undertake such an assessment.

The Modified ZINCEXTM Process (MZP), developed by Técnicas Reunidas, is an industrially proven flexible process. It can handle a wide range of primary and secondary raw materials, producing SHG zinc. The core of the Modified ZINCEXTM Process is the zinc solvent extraction unit. This unit is an effective barrier for any leachable impurities present in the raw material. As a result of this an ultra-pure zinc solution is always obtained. The high versatility of the process makes the application of the technology in different scenarios possible. MZP can be effectively applied when developing a whole new plant (Skorpion) or adapting its scheme to an existing refinery (Akita), in both cases giving the same results. Flexibility in terms of capacity of the plant is a great advantage of the MZP, there is the possibility to adapt the global process to a wide range of production capacities. Zinc production capacities of over 150 000 t/a may be achieved with a single solvent extraction plant train. The robustness of the Modified ZINCEXTM Process has been recently proven on two new plants currently in operation: Portovesme (Italy) and Horsehead (USA) after start up during 2013. The status of both plants is described in this paper.

"Aluminium rolling processing from ingots to cold rolled coils comes with a lot of challenges especially in controlling defective products in casting, hot mill and cold mill operations. Hence this study focused on reducing defects at mills and cast-house using six sigma approaches. The use of six sigma approach will help the production experts to determine the gap between its operation and world class process. Practical data from First Aluminium Rolling mills were presented and analysed and mini improvement projects were proposed based on organisation need to achieve excellence. This study encourages aluminium alloy industries to pursue process improvement projects on the basis of analysis on data obtained from their shop floor, hence ensuring that through this, recovery is improved and cost of poor quality is reduced.INTRODUCTION Engineer Bill Smith while working at Motorola in 1986 introduced a new concept in which a set of techniques and tools are used for process improvement by controlling variations (defects). "This paper describes a case study that illustrates how detailed geological engineering results were communicated to address a range of stability challenges in a producing mining environment. Instead of using standard geological engineering terminology, findings and recommendations were communicated as mine design options and mining responses to accommodate possible slope instabilities and associated risk. The resulting medium- to long-range mine plan integrated the potential slope instabilities and associated mining responses to provide a higher probability of planned resource extraction. It also reduced the potential for long-lasting production and processing delays.RÉSUMÉ Cet article décrit une étude de cas illustrant l’intérêt de la communication de résultats détaillés de géologie appliquée pour résoudre un éventail de difficultés relatives à la stabilité dans un environnement minier en production. Plutôt que d’utiliser une terminologie classique de géologie appliquée, les résultats et les recommandations ont été communiqués sous forme d’options pour la conception d’une mine et de réponses dans le contexte minier permettant de surmonter les éventuelles instabilités des pentes et les risques associés. Le plan de mine sur le moyen à long terme qui a résulté intégrait les instabilités potentielles des pentes ainsi que les réponses connexes dans le contexte minier afin de renforcer la probabilité de l’extraction des ressources prévue. Il réduisait également la possibilité de retards durables dans la production et le traitement.INTRODUCTIONSlope failures in an active mining operation are unscheduled but expected events, in the sense that the geotechnical design often assumes the potential for slope failure but cannot predict exactly when a failure will occur. Unfortunately, the geotechnical engineering cycle—characterization, slope design, displacement monitoring, instability management, and failure remediation—that is necessary to manage slope-failure risk is not always well known or understood outside the geotechnical engineering profession. The first introduction many personnel have to geotechnical engineering is when a slope failure starts to develop and appears to threaten the safety and livelihood of their workplace.At that point, the task of communicating the risk management of slope failure falls to the geotechnical engineer, who must summarize analytical methodology, design concepts, monitoring trends, and analysis results, frequently to an audience with limited exposure to the geotechnical field. All too often, the response has been to present a risk-management plan in the vernacular of geological engineering— using terms such as factor of safety (FOS), pore-pressure reduction, and slope unloading—instead of expressing the problem and solution in more readily understood mine production terms."

"The optimal profile of a rock slope under given geometry constraint is investigated by means of the upper bound method of limit analysis. The optimal condition corresponds to maximizing stability factor. It is assumed that rock failure condition is suitably described by the Hoek-Brown criterion. Genetic algorithm is applied for locating the optimal profile. The optimal profiles turn out to be concave profiles but there are heaps around the toes of the slopes. Compared with plane profiles, the percentage of increase in stability factor can reach up to nearly 50%. The key geometry parameters of the optimal profiles are provided for practical use. The new upper bound formulation is capable of computing the stability factors of slopes of any shape, thus the stability status of a slope under man-made excavation can be monitored during the whole construction period.INTRODUCTIONIn mining industry, man-made slopes are excavated to create working surfaces. It is important to optimize the slope profile in order to maximize slope stability under certain geometry constraint. For instance, when the height and width of an excavation are assigned, a plane profile AC (see in Fig. 1) is widely applied in engineering practice, but it has been proved not the best one in terms of safety (Utili & Nova, 2007; Cala, 2007). A vertical profile ABC is the one with least stability. Thus, it can be deduced that there is a profile within the domain of the rectangle ABCD providing the highest stability. Cala (2007) compared the difference of convex and concave profiles in stability using strength reduction technique. According to Cala (2007), circular concave slopes can increase the maximum slope inclination under given factor of safety. Besides, based on upper bound theory of limit analysis, Utili & Nova (2007) assumed a logarithmic spiral profile to prove it is more stable than a plane profile in terms of the stability factor. Although the above studies attempted to seek the best circular or logarithmic spiral profiles, none of them considered the arbitrary shape of the optimal profile and its contribution to enhance slope stability."

This work details the application of a multiple model approach to estimate frother concentration in flotation processes. The methodology consists of identifying a set of linear dynamic models representing the effect of gas rate on the collection-zone gas holdup at different known frother concentrations (calibration step). An adaptive law is then obtained using Bayes&apos; rule to evaluate the conditional probability that each model represents the observed system behavior. In this way, a frother concentration estimate is calculated as a weighted sum of model probabilities and their associated (known) frother concentrations. Experimental results conducted in a two-phase system using Dowfroth250C are promising. Modeling and analysis for MIBC frother are also provided.

"The potential use of industrial and municipal waste glass as a partial pozzolanic replacement for Normal Portland cement in mine backfill has been investigated. Considerable quantities of glass are currently discarded into landfill sites at high cost to municipal and industrial users with no foreseeable environmental benefits being gained by such disposal. This research study was undertaken to assess the viability of using ground waste glass materials as partial binder replacement of Portland cement fractionswithin consolidated mine backfill materials. The program was implemented to review various factors that could influence successful incorporation of glass waste replacement of cement, these factors being the feasibility of glass waste procurement, determination of process economics and the physical and chemical suitability of ground waste glass materials to generate adequate backfill strength when replacing Normal Portland cement fractions. A series of laboratory assessment trials were established to evaluate backfill component characteristics and mixture strength properties for both standard Portland cement-consolidated and blended Portland cement/ground waste glass-consolidated backfill materials. Side-by-side review of the strength behaviour of various component backfill/cement mixtures was designed to permit comparative evaluation of the capabilities of ground waste glass and Portland cement products as backfill consolidating agents"

Construction safety documents regulate significant safety actions and requirements by which construction workers or employees should abide in order to secure them from occupational hazard events. Therefore, facilitating faster identification of applicable safety requirements from the documents has become an important topic in the construction safety domain. To address the need in this regard, tools and techniques have been developed and research efforts have been made. One of the research efforts is to utilize ontology, a knowledge representation and reasoning approach, as the methodology to achieve the goal of identifying applicable safety requirements. In such ontology-based researches, the development and construction of the safety concept ontology is an essential task as the concepts and the relationships between the concepts both representing key safety knowledge need to be carefully identified. In this paper, the author focuses on the safety documents without predefined concept structure and aims to address the concept and relationship identification difficulties. Specifically, the author leverages the Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) methodology, a theory of data analysis that identifies conceptual structures among data sets, to mine and analyze the documents in order to discover safety concept structure and to further assist the development of the concept ontology for the construction safety documents. The author expects the application of FCA to construction safety domain can eventually benefit the ontology-based approaches for identification of applicable safety requirements.

Mining has a record of achievement in developing and adopting new technology to facilitate the extraction of increasingly challenging resources. Certainly larger, or more capable, mining equipment has allowed mining companies to mine mineral deposits at lower unit costs; however, there has also been the advent of computerized systems that aid in the management and tracking of mining operations. Unfortunately, the latter computerized systems have not always had the success anticipated with their implementation. This paper explores the view that increased transparency of the planning and operating cycle in a mine, as provided by certain computerized systems, can result in some resistance from those whose work becomes ?exposed?. Examples are drawn from industry-leading technologies for both mine management and reconciliation that illustrate the issues and challenges that result. The adoption of appropriate change management principles is suggested as a best practice in planning and mitigating the challenges in implementing technologies which increase transparency in the mining environment.

A large magnesite-talc body is locared in Delora Township, 11 km sourh-southeasr of Timmins, Onrario. The deposit occurs in part of an Archean greensrone belt dominated by volcanic and sedimenrary rocks and large bodies of ultramafic intrusions. The magnesite-talc zane is abour 1800 m long, has a maximum width of 300 m and has been drilled ro 120 m below surface. Chemical analyses of rhe main carbonate zane average 20 ro 28% soluble MgO (magnesia), 5 ro 6% rota/ iron oxide and less rhan 0.1 % CaO (lime). Mineralogically, the zane consists of approximately 54% magnesite, 28% rate, /5% quartz and 3% hematire. Perrographic srudies suggest that rhe various assemblages of magnesite, rate, quartz and serpentine were derived from a parenr serpenrinire (after dunire). An early carbonitization stage, which produced a high-magnesite, low-talc assemblage, preceded a farer decarbonitizarion stage, which formed rhe main magnesite-talc assemblage. Despite a favourably low calcium oxide content of rhe magnesite-talc rock, considerable iron in the magnesire /at rice has limited the quality of the beneficiared product: rhe besr flotation concentrate to dare yields 92 to 94% dead-burned MgO. "Attempts have been made to produce hardened structures of a pseudomorphic type in various carbon and alloy steels. In order to obtain martensite with a fine distribution of cementite, an initial structure of fine lamellar or nodular pearlite is required; this may be obtained by conventional means. This is followed by partial austenitization and quenching.Two methods have been tried to induce partial austenitization:(a) A resistance (direct current) heating method involving rapid entry into the austenite field.(b) A new method, described as the ""threshold"" technique, involving homogenization of temperature just below A 1, followed by entry into the austenite field; two furnaces are required.The resulting structures have been examined for microstructures, hardness, tensile, and impact values. The tensile properties are comparable with those obtainable by conventional treatment methods. Impact values are disappointing, but this is explainable from the nature of the manifold changes occurring."

Talc has been mined at Madoc since 1896, the oldest mine in continuous operation in Canada. Canada Talc Industries Limited operates the Henderson and Conley deposits by underground methods. A newly discovered East zone is being de veloped by open pit. The raw Henderson talc is a foliated talc schist of high purity and whiteness; Conley talc is a white talcose dolomite. Products are used primarily as fillers in paints, plastics and rubber.
