"Since 1975, the Aluminium Pechiney Research Centre at Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne (LRF) has been concentrating its efforts on designing, testing and perfecting the Aluminium Pechiney point-fed prebaked reduction cell.In 1979, the AP18 cell (180 kA) was industrially launched with the construction and start-up of the F line in Saint-Jean. The following generation, the AP30 (300 kA), with prototypes started in 1981, was launched in 1986 on the Saint-Jean G line. Along with cell design, efficient process control systems were developed to pilot alumina feeding and bath composition. Together, these pots are currently producing 4.6 Mt of aluminum, i.e., 18% of the world’s overall yearly production.In 1989, the research centre faced a new challenge: to push the limits for the size of a reduction cell to further improve the profitability of Greenfield projects. This new generation development was also the opportunity for a significant redesign of the Aluminium Pechiney electrolysis information system.With a track record of ten years of semiindustrial operation with three prototypes, the AP50 technology is now ready for industrial implementation and enables a significant breakthrough to be made in terms of return on investment of a Greenfield smelter."

"This paper reviews the complete cycle of a small mining operation in a remote section of northern British Columbia, including discovery, exploration, development and production. The discovery of high-grade epithermal gold-silver mineralization occurred in 1969 following a regional geochemical reconnaissance program designed to search for porphyry copper mineralization in the Cassiar-Omineca Mountains. Exploration and development from 1971 to 1979 included geological, geochemical and geophysical surveys; trenching, almost 30 000 feet of surface and underground drilling in about 100 holes and cross-cutting, drifting and raising on the principal goldsilver- bearing vein. This led to the delineation of 100000 tons at an estimated grade of0.9 oz gold per ton and 18 oz silver per [on to an average depth of 120 feet below surface. of a 100-ton per day mining operation employing about 50 personnel with all supporting infrastructure transported to the site by a Hercules aircraft. The operation was subsequently supported by its own Twin Otter aircraft with periodic Hercules campaigns supplying major items including fuel.The mining operation included both open-pit and cut-and-fill methods. The milling operation employed conventional cyanide leach process with cyanide destruction initially by alkali chlorination and subsequently by the Inco SOl /Air process.The fly-in operation, initially structured on a 21-day-in and 7-day-out basis was modified to al-t-day-in and Z-day-out basis with no loss in efficiency and with a significant increase in employee satisfaction. The operation, which earned the B.C. Small Mines Safety A ward in two consecutive years in its Ll-month operating history, emphasized safety and process hazard awareness. Wildlife studies in the environmentally sensitive mine area also showed that industry and wildlife can coexist in harmony.Most importantly, the paper compares the feasibility assumptions with actual operating experience."

"Mine management now recognizes the value of computer-based truck-shovel dispatching in open pit mines. The key tangible benefits are substantial productivity increases with a given fleet of equipment or, alternately, significant reductions in equipment required to meet production quotas. In this paper, the authors review the literature, report on efficient, optimal algorithms for haul truck dispatching in real-time, and briefly discuss methods used by various mines to evaluate productivity improvements over manual methods. "Extensive mechanization of underground mining operations, improvements in blasting technology and the development of simulation models for systems evaluation has now made it feasible to optimize rock fragmentation and materials handling operations. Methods of achieving these objectives are described in this paper, with particular emphasis on the need to obtain precise field data measurements. Techniques are illustrated with reference to the sub-level open stoping system of mine production. IntroductionThe primary objective to be achieved in any mining system is to deliver a specified grade of ore to the mineral processing plant at a planned delivery rate and at the minimum total mining cost. Design and management of such a system is complicated by the large number of unit operations and the often unknown inter- relationships between the different unit processes. This particularly applies in underground mines, where planning restrictions and unit costs are much greater than in comparable tonnage sur face mining operations. These difficulties can often be resolved by the application of judgment based on extensive experience, but the costly trial -and-error methods required for new technology discourage innovation.Most modern medium- and large-scale mines are now extensively mechanized. Consequently, the performance of each unit operation by individual items of equipment should be predictable for a given set of conditions. An essential prerequisite is that quantitative performance data are available from field measurements. Such information can then be used to optimize the design and management of the complete mining system to achieve the minimum tot al mining cost. One of the most significant factors influencing all unit costs is the degree of rock fragmentation. The importance of this variable is indicated by the fact that opt imization of rock fragmentation implies minimization of tot al mining system costs."

In this research, the effects of rare earth elements addition on thermal fatigue behaviors of AZ91 alloy were studied. Repeated heating and cooling cycles were applied on the samples at 170°C and 210 °C to develop thermal fatigue cracks, Crack growth mechanisms and microstructural influences were investigated by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) as well as energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Thermal fatigue behaviors were improved successively by addition of up to 2-wt% RE, This improvement is attributed to consummation of the aluminum of the melt by precipitation of the needle shape Al 11 RE3 phases, This process reduces the volume of Mg17Al12 phases and consequently decreases the brittle Mg/Mg17Al12 interfaces which are the main reason of weak thermal properties of the alloy at rather high temperatures, Further additions of RE, however, reduced the thermal shock resistance of samples by increasing in the mean length of the brittle needle shape phases.

"With growing international interest in mineral resources in Central Africa, the importance of transparency in resource development cannot be overemphasized. Without transparency, the region cannot maximize revenues from resources. Although the importance of transparency is beginning to be recognized, many factors can hold back the gains of transparency from resulting in real economic development for the countries involved. This paper reviews current financial, economic, and development literature for Central African countries, with a focus on identifying underlying conditions and specific transactional conditions impacting the effectiveness of transparency in mining development in the region.RÉSUMÉ En raison de l’intérêt international croissant pour les ressources minérales en Afrique centrale, l’importance de la transparence dans le développement des ressources ne peut pas être surestimée. "Abstract - Gold-bearing quartz reefs commonly show extremely erratic and unpredictable grade variation, although gross geological continuity may be good. This type of variation is often described as being nuggety or having a high nugget effect and can be measured quantitatively using the semivariogram. Understanding of geological features such as reef texture and structure will provide improved models for the interpretation of assay data, drill core descriptions, etc. In this paper, a case study from the quartz-hosted gold occurrences in the Gwynfynydd mine, United Kingdom, is described. The work provides a starting point for models of lateral variation and demonstrates the types of structural and textural features that may be sought to give clues to the prediction of gold distribution in similar deposits. Gold deposition at Gwynfynydd is primarily associated with the reef footwall. The host veins form a discrete group of structures that may have been emplaced early in the sequence of quartz veins forming the reef. This potentially exposes them to a maximum number of dissection events during repeat dilations of the lode. Gold was deposited in the local porosity at extreme concentrations, equivalent to kg/t grades, when the host fissure had become filled with a porous framework of crystalline quartz and sulfides. Distribution of porosity varied laterally along the vein as the result of the formation of clump-like growths of minerals from the vein walls. The growth style is relevant to the distribution of gold although it may not be relevant to the occurrence of gold in a particular vein. The preservation of pores with some connectivity late in the vein fill sequence may be important in permitting continued but slow fluid flows. This facilitates effective fluid reaction with wall rock-derived methane, thus changing the relative rates of gold and quartz deposition in favor of gold. The textural studies explain the first-order control of nugget distribution at Gwynfynydd but do not allow for prediction and optimization of the resource estimation process. This is principally because of the very low geological continuity and poor predictability of the high-grade pockets. Nonetheless, the work does provide a clear geological explanation for the erratic nature of the gold. It indicates textures and structures that can be used to determine geological continuity of the goldbearing elements within the gross reef envelope."

Sarcheshmeh refractory consumption rate is about 7.5 - 8 kg/ton of the produced copper, which is almost three times higher than the other smelters practice. High destruction rate of tuyere zone refractory controls vessel productivity and operational lifetime. In this research with the aid of cold model and computational fluid dynamic (CFD), melt recirculation pattern and gas - liquid plume properties in the wide range of gas blowing conditions were studied. Results revealed that in addition to the well-known mechanical refractory destruction mechanism, fast tuyere zone refractory destruction could also be related to the cold bubble cluster formation near tuyere tips and introducing severe thermal shock to the refractory surface. Removing accretion and its strong bonds to the refractories around tuyere tip, causes refractory mechanical destruction and increases tuyere diameter. Increased tuyere diameter, in turn assists gas discharge in the bubbling regime. Air blowing in the bubbling regime result in the formation of big bubble clusters, bubble breakup and back attack occurrence which all found to have major impact on the refractory lifetime. Outcomes of this research, contributed to the plant converting management, blowing hardware and instrumentation improvement.

Cameco Corporation is in the process of revitalizing the Key Lake mill. As part of this process, the company is considering installing the Rabbit Lake style strong acid stripping in solvent extraction. This would lead to using hydrogen peroxide for uranium precipitation. The process currently employs ammonia stripping and ammonia precipitation. As part of the process evaluation, an indirect fired drier pilot plant test was conducted. "This paper presents a summary compilation of current Canadian coal research projects in the areas of exploration, mining and preparation. The compilation forms the basis for a review of present operations and technology, and of current research efforts. General research areas, requirements and priorities are suggested along with a discussion on achieving the research goals in terms of funds, facilities and staff. The current level of research funding in these areas is assessed. IntroductionCanada's coal production is expected to undergo major expansion over the next two decades in response to domestic demands on coal for electrical power generation, industrial uses and conversion to synthetic .fuels, and in response to export demands for both thermal and metallurgical coal s. Surface mining will continue to dominate, but underground mining will contribute an increasing proportion to total production.In Canada, coal research, particularly in the areas of exploration, mining and preparation (E, M & P), has been limited. Increased impetus has recently been given to this research with expansion of CANMET's activities and with the establishment of the Coal Mining Research Centre (CMRC). University researchers are branching into coal research; strata mechanics and preparation are popular in mining-related fields.With the increase in number of organizations and individuals involved in coal research, a means of keeping abreast of the ongoing work is necessary. An annual summary of the status of and developments in current research assists in providing this information. The CMRC prepared such a summary for Canadian coal E, M & P research in 1979 and it received favourable response, justifying the effort. A 1980compilation has been prepared and pro vides the basis for this paper; it is presented with a brief discussion on background, format and content.The compilation forms a basis for an examination of the current status of Canadian technology in E, M & P and of the ongoing research in each area. General research requirements are reviewed and programs and tasks are suggested, followed by a discussion of research goals in term s of priorities and achievement. An assessment is made of the level of research funding in Canada, with comparisons drawn from the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia."

Vanadium mineralization occurs in oxide-rich horizons within layered metagabbro zones of the Sinarsuk deposit, West Greenland. The main oxide minerals are vanadiferous magnetite and ilmenite, comprising 30% to 90% of the rock volume and the ratio of magnetite to ilmenite ranges from 3:2 to 4:1. Ore microscopy shows that magnetite and ilmenite vary between 0.2 mm and 4.5 mm in grain size, but locally they are coarser grained. Grains are subhedral to euhedral and annealed suggesting that they will liberate very well upon grinding. Electron microprobe analyses indicate that magnetite grains are homogeneous and have a vanadium content, in different mineralized samples, ranging from 1.93 wt% to 2.68 wt% equivalent V2O5. Ilmenite hosts abundant and variably sized hematite lamellae, and it has vanadium contents ranging from 0.32 wt% to 0.59 wt% equivalent V2O5. Preliminary beneficiation of two composite bulk samples shows the samples can be beneficiated fairly easily using low-intensity magnetic separation at a coarse grind (106 microns to 600 microns) to yield a vanadiferous magnetite concentrate. The presence of hematite lamellae in ilmenite prevents recovery of a satisfactory ilmenite concentrate. The most likely beneficiation flowsheet would encompass a primary mill (SAG or rod mill), which would grind to about 600 microns, followed by a rougher magnetic separation stage. The rougher magnetic concentrate would be reground in a ball mill until suitable liberation is achieved. The reground material would then be cleaned in further LIMS stages. However, further laboratory testing is required to establish the final beneficiation program. This work demonstrates the value of mineralogical investigation in guiding and explaining the results of beneficiation processes.

The wear mechanisms of the tuyere lines of Peirce-Smith and Hoboken converters are a subject of endless debate and speculation. However, there has been an indication that one of the primary factors in the deterioration of tuyere lines is due to the batch operation of the converting process. The cooling of the brick in the tuyere line during out-of-stack times leads to shrinkage of the brick and resultant opening of the joints. Subsequently, on re-entry of the tuyere line into the bath, the joints become penetrated with matte and re- expansion of the brick is prevented. It is thought that this regular cycle of exiting the batch for slag skimming and replenishment of matte and re-entering for further blowing leads to a gradual “ratcheting” of the tuyere brick lining. If no expansion allowance is furnished between the endplate and the endwall of the lining, then the generation of damaging compressive stress is unavoidable. INTRODUCTION It is generally accepted industry-wide that the integrity of a refractory lined vessel is determined by an inextricable combination of refractory brick quality, the caliber of the lining design and installation, and the severity of the process inflicted upon the high wear areas of the vessel lining. Rigby has summarized the concentrated attempt, over the past several years, to optimize the microstructural, chemical, and fracture properties of the refractories used in non-ferrous pyrometallurgical vessels. Furthermore, lining design concepts involving larger and longer brick and the extent and positioning of expansion allowance in the joints have been extensively trialed. All these efforts have provided some, but not startling, improvements. The simple fact is that a vessel lining composed of bricks with an optimized microstructure and chemical inertness must installed with a well-conceived design to decompress the lining stresses that are generated by the batch operation of copper converters. REFRACTORY QUALITY Converting is conducted by injecting air into the molten matte and white metal for the very purpose of generating iron and copper oxide slags. These slags must be contained by a refractory which, by its mineralogical formulation, is optimized for chemical inertness.

Abstract- Agrium Inc. is a world leader in the production, distribution, and marketing of agricultural products and services in both North America and Argentina. The new phosphate mine and mill complex located southwest of Kapuskasing, Ontario, was constructed to replace an offshore supply of phosphate rock, and produces a high-grade phosphate concentrate. The Cargill Township Carbonatite Complex is one of a series of carbonatite complexes in the region that are hosted by the 1.9 Ga aged Kapuskasing Structural Zone. The carbonatites in the mine area have intruded Archean gneissic granodiorite rocks of the Wawa Subprovince, and metasedimentary rocks of the Quetico Subprovince. The Cargill Carbonatite Complex displays a typical concentric zonation pattern from an outer ring of alkalic pyroxenites, through an inner ring of sövite-carbonatite, to a central core of rauhaugite-carbonatite. The initial carbonatite intrusion and subsequent residual orebody have been modified by faulting such that the northwestern third of the complex has been displaced approximately 2.5 km northeast. The phosphate ores are composed principally of residual apatite sands that were formed by the weathering and dissolution of the soluble minerals of the carbonatite protolith. These ores are subdivided by their iron content into high grade (A ores) and lower grade (B1 and B2) ores. They are separated from the primary unweathered carbonatite by a layer of saprolite, whose thickness varies depending upon the composition of the underlying carbonatite. Cretaceous waste materials consisting of well-sorted silica/kaolinite sand and peat deposits are typically found to stratigraphically overlie the ores. A minor amount of the ore feed comes from cemented phosphate ores. All rock types are covered by Pleistocene glacial tills and clays.

"Tulawaka Mine is a joint venture between Pangea Minerals Limited 70% (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Barrick Gold Corporation) and Northern Mining 30%. Tulawaka Mine is located in North West of Tanzania in the Lake Victoria Goldfields. Tulawaka Mine is scheduled to process 360,000 tonnes per year at an average 11.5 g/t head grade over a 4 year mine life.The Tulawaka Process Plant uses single stage crushing, single stage SAG milling, gravity, intensive leach of gravity concentrates, CIL, Zadra desorption and cyanide detoxification to process the ore. Gold recovery exceeds (or is expected to) 95%.The Process Plant was designed and constructed under the supervision of Ausenco Engineering of Australia. Site works commenced in January 2004, Process Plant construction commenced in July 2004 and the first ore was presented to the Process Plant 26th February 2005. The first gold was poured on 15th March 2005. All construction contractors were demobilized from site 7th April 2005. Major achievements have been 3.4 million hrs LTI free during construction and operation to date, training of the Tanzanian workforce at Bulyanhulu Mine prior to commissioning, a succession plan to replace expatriate personnel with Tanzanian staff and significant over performance of the Process Plant against design.INTRODUCTIONTulawaka Mine is situated approximately 160 km south west of Mwanza in the western Lake Victoria Goldfields District of north western Tanzania. The property is held under a joint venture between Pangea Goldfields Inc (70%), a wholly owned subsidiary of Barrick Gold Corporation, and Explorations Minieres Du Nord Ltée (30%). A location map showing the position of the operation in Tanzania is shown in Figure 1.Mine site staff at Tulawaka comprises a combination of Tanzanian and Expatriate personnel. "Inco Gold Company was created in 1987 as an unincorporated business unit of Inco Limited. In 1988, Inco Gold Management Inc. was incorporated to supply management, exploration and engineering services to this unit. The first new project, at Casa Berardi, Quebec, was brought to production in September 1988, less than two years after completion of exploration. For 1989, Inco Gold's exploration and capital expenditures have been budgeted at approximately $94 million, a record level. Inco Gold holds interests in more than 80 precious metals ventures and prospects in Canada, the United States, Brazil, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and France. The most advanced projects, in addition to Casa Berardi, are at Mineral Hill, Jardine, Montana, where initial production is anticipated in the third quarter of1989, and Crixas in central Brazil, where production is scheduled to begin during the fourth quarter of the same year.BackgroundTraditionally, Inco Limited's mineral exploration has concentrated on nickel and other base metals but since the early 1980s Inco's exploration activity has focussed strongly on precious metals, principally gold. As a result, three deposits have been discovered and developed . In order to accelerate the establishment of a strong gold mining enterprise with its own specific growth and profit objectives, Inco Gold Company was created in 1987 as an unincorporated business unit. At the end of 1988 Inco Gold's share of drill-indicated gold reserves was approximately 14 million short tons containing 3.4 million ounces of gold.At Casa Berardi in northwestern Quebec, one mine is in production and another is planned to open in 1990. Properties at Crixas in Brazil and at Jardine, Montana, U.S.A., were being readied for production in 1989. By 1991, Inco Gold's share of gold production is expected to be 125 000 ounces with a target of 400 000 ounces annually by the mid-1990s."

Stirred milling of nickel laterites offers possibilities for improving liberation and selective size reduction of soft nickel-bearing minerals in laterites. Batch grinding tests were performed in a Netzsch LME4 stirred mill on siliceous goethitic (SG), goethitic (G), and saprolitic (SAP) nickel laterite samples (- 2000 ?m particle size) to evaluate the effect of stirrer speed, solid content, water salinity and grinding time. A fine mineral product (-38 µm) was used to evaluate the effect of selective grinding and Ni upgrade. The optimum grinding time for the highest Ni upgrade was 0.25 min, 0.1 min and 0.1 min for the SG, G, and SAP nickel laterite, respectively. A new feed (38-2000 µm) for each nickel laterite sample was prepared for batch grinding tests under the optimum grinding conditions. Upon grinding the 38-2000 µm feed, the - 38 µm product confirmed the effect of selective grinding and nickel upgrade. Size classification followed by stirred milling is a suggested process for Ni upgrade. The best Ni upgrade result was achieved on the SG nickel laterite among the three samples. The Ni grade increased from 0.85% to 1.37%, with 27.8% Ni recovery. Bottle roll leach tests showed that for SG and SAP samples selective grinding had no dramatic effect on Ni extraction due to the slow leach rate of hard mineral particles. Stirred milling of G sample increased the surface area of goethite, resulting in higher Ni extraction. Gravity concentration through a Knelson Concentrator was not effective in the further treatment of the stirred milling products either due to the poor operating conditions or due to the mineralogy characteristics of the feed samples. The energy requirement in the stirred milling was investigated. The first pass of the signature plots study is critical for the purpose of selective grinding, because the best result on selective grinding is achieved in the early stage of the grinding process.
