"The East Sullivan Stock (ESS) is a small, composite felsic alkaline pluton of presumedlate Archean age in the Val d’Or mining district. Three main facies have been distinguished: mon-zonite sensu stricto, porphyritic monzonite, and green trachytic porphyry. This monzonitic group ofrocks is of relatively homogeneous composition with high abundances of Na2O, K2O, Ba, Sr, Rb, Zr,Mo and LREE. The alkaline ESS is distinguished from other igneous units in the Val d’Or miningdistrict, such as the Bourlamaque Batholith, by relatively high concentrations of Ba, Sr, Rb, Mo, Cuand Au. The ESS hosts many base (Cu, Mo) and precious (Au) metal occurrences, including: (1)porphyry style Cu-Au-Mo disseminated sulfde deposits, (2) Cu-Au deposits in volcanic rocks near the ESS contact, and (3) pyritic gold mineralization in east-west trending shear zones. The ESS is well defined by concentrical zoning on the aeromagnetic vertical gradient color map, and displays four linear trends, which are assumed to be structural lineaments, at 035°-055°, 320°-300°, east-west, and north-south. The main mineral occurrences related to the stock display a preferred spatial association with the east-west linear magnetic trends.The ESS is preferentially located along a major structure and was emplaced late in the evolutionof the Abitibi subprovince like other felsic alkaline plutons. This stock is similar to late-tectonic min-eralized felsic alkaline intrusions of the Kirkland Lake and Larder Lake mining districts in Ontario, and to the Allard stock in the U.S.A. which is associated with gold and base metal mineralization. Similarities also exist with younger alkaline plutons associated with Cu-Mo-Au porphyry deposits in the Canadian Cordillera, which formed in tensional tectonic environments. The felsic alkaline magmamay have formed by partial melting of deeply buried supracrustal rocks, concomitant with the development of deep fractures such as the Cadillac Fault. In such an environment, hydrothermal solutions carrying remobilized metals from deep supracrustal rocks may have deposited gold and base metals in structural traps. The Ni-rich Epidote Zone of the Fraser Mine at Sudbury is characterized by alteration assemblages rich in epidote, actinolite and magnetite which are roughly concentrically zoned and up to hundreds of meters in length. These zones form discrete areas within the igneous Footwall Breccia below the Sudbury Igneous Complex. The assemblages grade from epidotized Footwall Breccia matrix,through actinolite-bearing rocks with few vestiges of original Footwall Breccia textures, into the most intensely altered rock, a magnetite-rich facies. Pentlandite, pyrrhotite and pyrite are the dominant sulfdeminerals; chalcopyrite is minor. The strongest geochemical differences compared to original Footwall Breccia occur where epidote and actinolite dominate the alteration assemblage (EPDZact facies). The most intense alteration facies are typifed by low Cu/(Cu+Ni) values of <0.1. Strong positive correlations exist between Ni and Co, Cu and Au, and among Ir, Os, Ru and Rh. Chondrite-normalized Ni - PGE -Au - Cu plots display an overall increase in all elements from the least to the most intensely altered facies except for Au and Cu. As the proportion of actinolite increases in the EPDZact facies, the chondrite-normalized profles fatten considerably due to low Au and Cu contents. Abundances of Ni, Ir, Ru and Rhalmost ubiquitously increase with degree of alteration. In contrast, Cu, Zn, Ag and Au contents are low in almost all facies. It is suggested that saline hydrothermal fluids moved through the Epidote Zone formation and became more oxidized as they reacted with the Footwall Breccia and with footwall units, including ultramafic rocks. As this trend continued, magnetite-rich zones eventually developed. The occurrence of calcite locally in these magnetite-rich zones suggests that the pH of the fluid increased, causing Cu solubility to drop as activity in the hydrothermal system waned. Sudden changes in fluid composition such as this may have been due to an influx of fluid from bounding ultramafic rocks. Hydrothermal activity was focused along the margins of footwall ultramafic units. Individual hydrother-mal cells may have formed in the Footwall Breccia along pre-existing structures or sulfde concentrations. Metals may have been scavenged from sulfide-bearing Footwall Breccia and possibly Sublayer rocks. Nickel and some PGE were deposited in the Epidote Zone, whereas Cu, Au and Ag continued out-ward into the footwall where they were deposited as Cu-rich footwall veins. As smelter feeds become more complex, the impurities that ultimately report to electrorefineries are changing. Many of these impurities collect in the electrolyte and must be controlled. As commercial copper electrorefineries look to expand their capacities by increasing their operating current density, the interaction between electrolyte composition and anode passivation can cause operational difficulties. To improve the industry&apos;s understanding of the passivation phenomena, the role of electrolyte composition was evaluated using commercial electrorefining anode samples. The electrolyte composition variables examined were copper, acid, nickel, arsenic, chloride, thiourea and glue. Finally, the role of non-commercially utilized additives, such as bromide and polyethylene glycol were studied. From this investigation, electrolyte parameters that inhibit copper dissolution through copper sulfate precipitation, copper oxide stabilization and/or absorbed species lead to accelerated passivation. Species that prevent passivation have the ability to complex cuprous ions. Possible mechanisms for the role of each.

"AECL Research has constructed an underground laboratory for the research and development required for the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program. The experimental program in the laboratory will contribute to the assessment of the feasibility and safety of nuclear fuel waste disposal deep in stable plutonic rock.In 1988, AECL extended the shaft of the Underground Research Laboratory (URL) from the existing 255 m depth to a depth of 443 m in cooperation with the United States Department of Energy (USDOE). The project, which involved carrying out research activities while excavation and construction work was in progress, required careful planning. To accommodate the research programs, full-face blasting with a burn cut was used to advance the shaft. Existing facilities at the URL had to be modified to accommodate an expanded underground facility at a new depth. This paper discusses the design criteria, shaft-sinking methods and approaches used to accommodate the research work during this shaft extension project.IntroductionThe Underground Research Laboratory (URL), a major geotechnical research facility, has been developed by AECL Research, 120 km northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The URL is part of the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program (CNFWMP), which is assessing the concept of nuclear fuel waste disposal in a vault deep in stable plutonic rock of the Canadian Shield (Hancox, 1986). The URL provides a representative environment to conduct a wide variety of geotechnical research relevant to nuclear waste disposal. Extensive characterization and monitoring programs were carried out prior to construction and will continue during operation. The operating phase experiments began in 1989 and will continue until the year 2CXXl (Simmons, 1990). Figure I shows the present extent of the URL facilities and the proposed future development."

In order to recycle the iron and rare earth from the Baotou tailings, a roasting method was developed involving the addition of C, Ca(OH)2, and NaOH, designed to both decompose the rare earth minerals and convert haematite into magnetite and allow its recovery. The effect of various parameters such as roasting temperature, roasting time, C addition, Ca(OH)2 addition, and NaOH addition on the reduction ratio of haematite (iron sesquioxide) and decomposition ratio of rare earth were investigated. The results showed that the reduction ratio of haematite and the decomposition ratio of rare earth could be as high as 85% and 95% respectively when the roasting temperature was 650°C, roasting time was 60 min, Ca(OH)2 addition was 4%, NaOH addition was 3%, and C addition was 1.5%.

"General purpose uniprocessor systems used in control applications, however fast they may be, at a certain stage attain saturation, forcing the user or designer to consider other avenues for solving the problem. This paper gives a broad overview of multiprocessing with special reference to transputers. Virtually all aspects, from parallel systems real-time control to artificial intelligence (AI) and expert systems, have been highlighted. The application of transpurters in unilayer and multilayer control are discussed in detail, with specific attention to sensor integration. Two case studies describe at length the utilization of transputers. IntroductionIn conformance with the high level taxonomy of parallel computer architectures as given by Ralph Duncan(l) (an improvement to Flynn&apos;s classification, which maintains the essential elements of useful taxonomy based on instructions and data streams), the MlMD architectures are categorized into two groups: (I) shared memory, and (2) distributed memory type. While the shared memory multiprocessors are more popular than the message-passing multiprocessors because they can be programmed in a conventional sequential fashion, their aspect of the architecture creates a perfonnance bottleneck. In contrast, message-passing multiprocessors (MPM) suffer from no such limitation and can attain linear speed increases that are directly proportional to the number of processors put into use. The MPM implementation also has its own advantages and disadvantages. Because the performance of the system is heavily dependent on it, the interconnection strategy in a distributed memory MIMD machine is of paramount importance. The transputer(2.J), a multiprocessor node of the distributed memory type, is becoming very popular. The advantages offered by the transputer make its application in the mining and processing industries very promising."

"The schist-, sediment-, and intrusion-hosted Tertiary Au-Ag hydrothermal deposits of the northern Black Hills, South Dakota are localized and controlled by various types of fractures. This study is an attempt to distinguish between and discuss the possible causes of these fractures in three mines: Richmond Hill, Annie Creek – Foley Ridge (ACFR), and Gilt Edge.Five models based on the structural and tectonic settings of the northern Black Hills are proposed for the fracture origin. In Richmond Hill mine, mineralized fractures within the schist-hosted deposits are in the form of veinlets and stockworks. Larger veins filling open spaces along schistosity planes are also present. Fractures in Richmond Hill mine are related to breccia pipe emplacement and influenced by the Precambrian foliation.Fractures in sediment-hosted (ACFR) and intrusion-hosted (Gilt Edge) deposits are mode I systematic joints. These fractures, and similar ones examined in seven locations outside the mines, are related mostly to the formation of the Lead-Deadwood dome. Fracture trends vary from one area to another depending on their location with respect to the dome. Other factors, such as the Black Hills uplift, pluton emplacement, and Precambrian foliation, may also affect the fracture trends. The proximity of the mines to domes formed by multiple intrusions, the associated fracture patterns and density, and existence of breccias, may be used in exploration for similar deposits in the northern BlackHills or other areas of similar geologic settings."

"This paper describes the performance properties of a new 95 ksi minimum yield strength, oil well casing grade designed specifically to resist hydrogen sulphide stress corrosion cracking, SSCc. The new grade, Soo-95SS, demonstrates NACE Tensile threshold values greater than 90% specified minimum yield strength, SMYS, and NACE Bent Beam values in excess of 12.7 x 1()4 psi. The new Soo-9588 grade also exhibits superior collapse and notch toughness values. IntroductionIn recent years, a trend toward casing grade specialization has resulted in the introduction of numerous proprietary grades designed specifically for particular production environments, In response, Algoma Steel has developed, as part of a "" grade for service"" philosophy, two new 95 ksi minimum yield grades. The two grades are Soo-95, High Collapse (HC), and Sour Service (SS). This paper describes the development of Soo-95 Sour Service.Four main objectives were established:1. Definition of the steelmaking and continuous cast processing practices2. Determination of the acceptable maximum and minimum levels for all chemical elements3. Definition of special processing requirements4. "The Amalgamated Kirkland gold deposit is located at Kirkland Lake, Ontario, within the Archean Abitibi Greenstone belt of the Canadian Shield. It lies on a fault or “break”, termed the Cyprus Break, which is a splay off a regional structure termed the Cyprus-Battle Mountain Break. The Cyprus Break merges with the Cyprus – Battle Mountain Break above the -250 m level, as it was not encountered in shallow drilling or surface exploration. These structures lie 1.5 km south of the 727 000 kg (23 million ounce) Kirkland Lake Main Break and 0.5 km north of the 872 000 kg(30 million ounce) Larder Lake Break.The deposit is hosted by alkalic Timiskaming Group volcanic and sedimentary rocks which are overthrust by older Larder Lake Group tholeiitic and komatiitic fows along the Larder Lake Break. Timiskaming syenitic intrusives, similar to the host rocks for the Kirkland Lake Main Break gold deposit, intrude both suites.The Amalgamated Kirkland deposit consists of lode-style gold mineralization which is mainly hosted by altered and pyritized Timiskaming trachytic volcanics which wedge out or thin at depth, between two sedimentary units. The intersection of the Cyprus – Battle Mountain and Cyprus Breaks, in conjunction with the westward plunge of the volcanic wedge, appears to control the westerly plunge of the Amalgamated Kirkland deposit at approximately 50º.Mineralization is characterized by blue-gray brecciated and “wormy” quartz-ankerite veinswhich contain up to 10% fne-grained pyrite and, in decreasing order of abundance, minor galena,chalcopyrite, sphalerite, molybdenite and visible gold. The sulfdes and gold commonly occur alongfractures and wallrock inclusions within the veins. Native gold occurs as fne pinpoints distributed in 1-mm to 5-mm size clusters of up to ten or more grains.The auriferous veins occur within a quartz-ankerite-sericite-pyrite alteration assemblage which is enveloped by a broader zone of ankerite-sericite±hematite±quartz-pyrite alteration up to 60 m wide. This latter assemblage overprints the regional greenschist-facies chlorite-calcite assemblage.The Amalgamated Kirkland property has had a long history of exploration activity beginning with the first discovery of mineralization in 1911 on the Hunton Shaft claim located in the northeast corner of the property. Since that time various prospecting, mapping, trenching, geophysical surveys and diamond drilling programs have concentrated on either carbonate zones along the Larder Lake Break or quartz veins along the northern side of the property in association with complex trachyte flows and syenite dikes.Battle Mountain Canada Inc. located the Cyprus – Battle Mountain Break through a prospecting, trenching and geophysical program in 1989. Drilling by Battle Mountain and Cyprus Canada under the surface showing, coupled with several revisions to the structural interpretation of the Cyprus –Battle Mountain and Cyprus Breaks, resulted in delineation of the Amalgamated Kirkland deposit. Location of an auriferous structure through basic surface exploration within 1 km of a world-class orebody demonstrates both the subtle nature of Archean gold deposits and the potential for finding new mineralization in heavily prospected camps."

"The quality of the backfill applied at a shield driven tunnel is of significant importance failure of the lining. The used material also affects the interplay between support and excavation behaviour.In this research the state of the actual bedding situation is investigated by an analytical approach, laboratory tests and numerical simulations. The numerical simulation using continuum methods have shown shortcomings. These shortcomings regarding the instability of large strain simulations restrict the possibility to reproduce the relocation of the backfilling material. The performed scaled model tests have shown that the regripping process of a double shielded tunnel boring machine affects the soil failure within the gap. With the analytical results the influence of the wall friction can be predicted. Therefore the angle of the failure surface can be determined. The results have shown that the wall friction significantly increases the failure angle. INTRODUCTIONFor tunnel boring machines (TBM) with single (SM) or double (DSM) shield, precast liningsegments are used as rock support. These segmental linings are installed within the protection of the TBM shield. In order to reduce the friction while advancing, the shield diameter is smaller than the diameter of the cutter head and therefore also smaller than the excavation boundary. The difference depends on the expected radial convergences. Since the lining segments are mounted within the shield the steering gap between the shield and the excavation boundary increases and is hereinafter called annular gap.In the process of tunneling in hard rock, the annular gap is usually filled with fine grained and closely graded gravel, termed as pea gravel. The backfilling process starts as soon as possible after the shield tail passes the lining. Due to the operational procedure within the working area of a TBM, a fully backfilled annular gap might not be established after every ring closure. This leads to an unfavorable distribution of the pea gravel leaving the segmental lining partially without bedding. Segmental linings can develop sufficient resistance only when properly bedded."

"Careful tax planning and proper attention to the regulations can result in an optimum deduction ""of the 25% federal resource allowance. Introduced in the Income Tax Act in1976, in part to compensate for the disallowance of provincial mining taxes and royalties. the 25% ""resource allowance"" is a permitted deduction in computing taxable income from mining and petroleum. However, the rules relating to the deduction are complex, and the importance of the deduction which can readily exceed 25% of net income- is frequently underestimated. Golden Star Resources started gold mining operations in Africa in 1999 after 15 years of exploration in South America. At the time, the approach to local assistance was through "alternative livelihood" programs and the donation of infrastructure to local communities. This was initially successful with local community support. However, with time and on reviewing the implemented projects, it became evident that the success was limited and many if the projects were either poorly used or in disrepair. Through a review of the options, we decided to develop a community assistance model driven by the communities themselves, while keeping control of the finances and the actual construction of the projects. Through the formation of the Golden Star Development Foundation, we began to support community driven projects for local economic development. The evolution of economic development projects continued over the next several years with the addition of project requirements for partnerships with government, and finally an evolution to a partnered turn-key piece of infrastructure that we hand over to an agency for operation and ongoing maintenance. We are currently working with outside partners to further our economic development activities in Ghana to the benefit of our stakeholders.

"Abstract -Vanadium mineralization occurs in oxide-rich horizons within the layered gabbro zones of the upper parts of the Bell River Complex, Matagami, Québec and the Lac Doré Complex, Chibougamau, Québec. The vanadium-rich horizons are well defined on the ground and in aeromagnetic surveys by their high magnetic susceptibility; consequently, magnetic susceptibility can be an indicator of vanadium mineralization. The main oxide minerals are ilmenite and titanian magnetite, containing 20% to 70% of volume and the ratio of titanian magnetite to ilmenite is relatively constant, ranging from about 1:1 to 2:1. Their sizes are less than 5 µm to greater than 1 mm to 2 mm, occurring as coarse- to medium-grained subhedral crystals intergrown with cumulate silicate minerals (plagioclase, pyroxene, etc.). Electron microprobe analyses indicate that the ilmenite grains are mineralogically and compositionally homogeneous and have low V contents (average 0.18% equivalent V2O5). In contrast, the titanian magnetite grains are inhomogeneous, consisting of trellisworks of ilmenite lamellae in Ti-poor, V-rich magnetite [less than 2 wt% TiO2, and 1.41% equiv. V2O5 (1.16% V2O3) for 20 analyses]. Thus, the magnetite is the principal ore mineral of vanadium; it hosts vanadium in the form of V3+, not V5+, as is commonly and erroneously reported. We have also devised a flowchart for the beneficiation of vanadium-titanium ores. Sommaire - La minéralisation de vanadium se trouve dans des horizons riches en minéraux oxydés de la partie supérieure des zones de gabbros lités des Complexes de la Rivière Bell, Matagami, Québec et du Lac Doré, Chibougamau, Québec. Des horizons riches en vanadium ont été bien définis sur le terrain et dans les levés aéromagnétiques par leur susceptibilité magnétique élevée; conséquemment, la susceptibilité magnétique est l’indicateur directe du contenu en vanadium. Les principaux minéraux oxydés sont l’ilménite et la magnétite titanifère, contenant 20% à 70% du volume et le rapport de magnétite titanifère à ilménite est relativement constant, allant d’environ 1:1 à 2:1. Leur dimension varie de 5 µm à plus grande que 1 mm à 2 mm, apparaissant sous forme de cristaux subidiomorphes, de grains grossiers à médiums, intercroissant avec la gangue silicatée (plagioclase, pyroxène, etc.) de la texture de cumulat. Les analyses à la microsonde électronique montrent que les grains d’ilménite sont minéralogiquement et chimiquement homogènes avec un faible contenu en V (moyenne 0.18% équiv. V2O5 ). Contrairement, les grains de magnétite titanifère sont hétérogènes, contenant des lamelles d’ilménite en "trellisworks"; ces grains sont pauvres en Ti et riches en V pour la portion magnétite de la magnétite titanifère [surtout contenant moins de 2 wt. % TiO2, et en moyenne 1.41% équiv. (1.16% V2O3) pour 20 analyses]. Ainsi, la magnétite est le principal minerai de vanadium; elle renferme du vanadium sous forme de V3+ et non de V5+, tel qu’il a été communément et à tort rapporté. This work concerns the identification of weak zones in the structure of a rock mass endangered by outburst of gases and rocks in the Rudna copper ore mine at greater depths (approximately 1200 m). A special methodology has been undertaken for the recognition of that threat in the wake of an outburst in the mine in 2009. No similar phenomena have been previously recorded in KGHM Polska Miedz copper ore mines. The research described in this paper was carried out in the new part of the deposit prepared for mining. Geophysical methods were used: seismic tomography and borehole ground penetrating radar (BGPR), along with particular identifications using geological engineering methods. In the researched area, Permian layers of sandstone and shale clay (Weissliegendes formation) and of Zechstein dolomite (top of Rotliegend formation) and anhydrite occur in the copper ore deposit. The rock layers are characterized by variable thickness and intensity of mineralization, varying internal structure, and local fracturing containing different gases and water. It is assumed that accumulation of gases occurs in the tectonically fractured dolomite. The study was focused on the recognition of the structure and properties of the dolomite layer lying directly within the roof of excavations. The first tests were performed with seismic tomography for the recognition of anomalous changes in the elastic properties of the rock mass. The results of these studies were used to design a control borehole for a detailed geological engineering assessment and BGPR surveys with 100MHz antennas. Seismic tomography enabled the identification of changes in Pwave and S-wave velocity, the Vp/Vs ratio, dynamic Poisson&apos;s ratio and dynamic Young&apos;s modulus. It was clear that seismic anomalies required verification by other methods. The BGPR survey was performed in a specially designed borehole, passing through the selected seismic anomalies. While the borehole was being drilled, the outflow of gases was identified, with varying amounts of CH4, CO2, and H2S detected, as well as water outflow. The results of BGPR confirmed the location of a reservoir of water and gases, about 30 m in length, found in layer of dolomite. The direct cause of the BGPR anomaly was assumed to be intensive fracturing, a greater content of clay material in the dolomite, and the presence of water in the fractured zone. The BGPR image was correlated with information on lithology, fracturing based on the RQD index and additional information acquired during drilling about water and gases surveys and other symptoms. The achieved results also showed a very strong correlation between the location of the zone containing gases and water and the anomalous S-wave velocity and field of dynamic Poisson?s ratio, and to a lesser extent other seismic parameters. It was found that the other measured seismic anomalies may be of the same nature as those identified in the control borehole and accordingly will require the implementation of detailed identification. The performed tests have also shown the usefulness of geophysical methods to identify geodynamic hazards under the geological and mining conditions of the copper ore deposit in the Rudna mine.

Mill circumferential speed, the number of passes of pulp through the grinding chamber, media type, size and filling ratio were investigated in an attempt to determine how to effectively grind copper concentrates in a stirred mill. The stirred mill product fineness was enhanced to some extent by decreasing media size, high media filling, and an increased number of passes of the pulp through the grinding chamber. Shape also plays a major role in grinding media effectiveness, with spherically shaped media producing a finer size. The fineness of the product increases with increasing power consumption but the method of energy transfer is very important in energy utilization. The effect of the mill parameters on copper flotation was evaluated. Copper recovery was influenced by grinding media size, mill speed and the number of pulp passes through the grinding chamber.

"Clay formations in their natural state exhibit very favorable confining conditions for repository of radioactive waste because they generally have a very low hydraulic conductivity, small molecular diffusion and significant retention capacity for radionuclides. Nevertheless, one concern regarding the hydromechanical behavior around drifts in such claystone is the associated pore pressure field disturbance during excavation works. In the short term, the very low permeability leads to an almost “undrained” condition, meaning that the stress change due to face advance will create volumetric strains leading to an increase or decrease of pore pressure. If the effective stresses reach the failure level, the induced damage around these excavations might change the favorable properties of such formations. To demonstrate the feasibility of a reversible deep geological disposal of high-level and intermediate-level long-lived radioactive waste (HLW, IL-LLW) in the Callovo-Oxfordian claystone (COX) formation, the French national radioactive waste management agency (Andra) started in 2000 to build the Meuse Haute-Marne underground research laboratory (M/HM URL). The present paper illustrates observed pore pressure changes during excavation of drifts (˜5 m diameter), of micro tunnels (˜0.7 m diameter) and a borehole (˜0.15 m diameter). All these openings are parallel to the major horizontal stress at the main level of the M/HM URL. In drifts parallel to the major stress (i.e., when the initial stress field in the drift section is quasi-isotropic) an important increase followed by a drop of pore pressure is observed in the horizontal plane at the drift wall. These observations emphasize the impact of the in situ stress state and rate of excavation on the pore pressure and provide important insight of the hydro mechanical behavior of the COX claystone and the relationship between pore pressure and excavation induced fractures zone."

The Anglogold Ashanti (AGA) Navachab single stage SAG mill has provided an excellent setting for incremental optimization. Over the past decades, several interventions have resulted in marked improvements in specific performance; including steel ball scat removal, re-design of the mill lifters, replacement the pebble crusher and cyclone cluster, as well as the use of a vibrating screen in place of a discharge trommel. Recent initiatives now include an operating fine DMS circuit, studies on pre-crushing of the ROM feed and also fine-screening as an alternative to hydrocyclone classification. The current optimized state of the Navachab mill allows it to operate at approximately 20% higher efficiency when compared to mills of similar shell dimensions in gold mining, treating similar ore. This paper describes the systematic improvement of the SAG circuit to its current state.

The techniques utilized to gain insight into the viability of mining included2-D and 3-D seismic surveys, longhole drilling, exploration wells, photo lineament, magnetic and gravity surveys, and actual room excavation.IntroductionPotash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. (PCS) owns and operates four potash mines in the province of Saskatchewan. The Lanigan Division mine is located 110 Ian east of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, near the town of Lanigan.The Lanigan Mine commenced production in August 1968under the ownership or Alwinsal Potash of Canada Limited. The mine was purchased by PCS in 1977.Lanigan Division&apos;s productive capacity is 3.4 million tonnes of product per year. Ore is extracted from the "" B"" zone or Layer III or the Patience Lake member of the Prairie Evaporite, more than 1000m below surface . The Patience Lake member (approximately 20 m thick) consists of potash interbedded with salt. The average run-of-mine ore grade is 21070 K20 (Fig. I).The mine was initially developed using the room-and-pillar technique. Improvements in mining resulted in the use or extensible conveyors in long panel rooms."

X-ray analysis systems installed in Canadian concentrators to-date may be broadly classified as wavelength dispersive analysers whereas the installation described herein is an energy dispersive x-ray analysis system. Energy dispersive x-ray analysis techniques may utilize radioactive sources to provide primary x-rays for excitation of elements and separate the secondary x-rays on the basis of energy levels. In contrast wavelength dispersive analysers apply high voltage x-ray tubes to provide primary x-rays and utilize crystals to disperse and thereby separate x-rays generated by bombardment of the sample."
