The KGHM Copper Refinery Plant, Glogów 1, has operated for 35 years and -increased its capacity almost ten times.Cathode quality, expressed in terms of the total impurity content, has undergone a five-fold improvement. The present refining capacity is equivalent to 240,000 metric tonnes of copper cathode, with a total impurity content of 20 ppm, inclusive of 10 ppm Ag. These accomplishments result from combined implementation of current technological progress in electrolytic refining and KGHM's own solutions applied to the Glogów Refinery. The quality improvement measures feature both lowering actual current density, despite an increase in nominal current density, and diminishing the role of non-ion mechanisms which transfer impurities to cathodes. The paper contains a detailed discussion of these issues and outlines possible measures aimed at further production and quality improvements.

"The auriferous mineralization at the Sigma-2 gold mine occurs in quartz-carbonate-tourmaline veins emplaced in a fractured granaphyre layer in the upper part of a differentiated gabbro-diorite sill. Kinematic indicators show that fracture planes were active as strike slip, dip-slip (reverse) and tensional faults.Measurements of attitudes of fractures and movement vectors indicate eight different sets that can be grouped into three systems: (I) an east-west oriented system includes a subvertical set and two other sets dipping north and south respectively; (2) a subhorizontal system of two conjugate sets bisected by a third tensional set; and (3)a system of sub vertical conjugate northeast and north-northwest trending sets.Kinematic analysis indicates that the subvertical set of the east west system was subjected to dextral strike-slip movement activated by a northwest-southeast compressive stress whereas the bulk deformation resulting from the remaining and subsequent seven sets can be explained by a protracted subhorizontal north-south compressive stress.The valuable gold mineralization is found principally in the fracture-filling veins of the subhorizontal system and subordinately in the other sets; among these other sets, the NE trending subvertical one is slightly more favourable.The over-all tectonic picture is that of an early mild dextral strike slip faulting in a ductile-brittle medium followed by a general flattening involving, first, a vertical and, later, a lateral extension by fracturing in a medium that had become brittle.The structural features are such that the differentiated sill could not be the source of the auriferous hydrothermal solutions."

"Newmont Mining Corporation’s Carlin (“Carlin”) operation processes roaster feed through a double rotator, dry grinding mill following secondary crushing. Metso Process Technology & Innovation (“PTI”) was involved in a review of crushing and dry grinding circuit operations in August 2009. A number of opportunities for increased throughput were identified in the PTI study.Extended plant trials were conducted in July 2010 to provide justification for possible circuit modifications and if needed, additional equipment. The trials confirmed that a finer crusher product would reduce the build-up of material ahead of the coarse grinding chamber in the double-rotator. Also revealed were material transport and airflow restrictions in the dry grinding circuit that resulted in a high circulating load.The secondary crushing plant demonstrated it was capable of reducing the amount of +¾” material in the mill feed thus increasing dry grinding throughput. However, wet and sticky feed affected screening efficiency resulting in low utilisation of the existing crusher capacity. The open circuit configuration also made it difficult to control crushing circuit product size.For the dry grinding circuit, changes in grinding media size, transfer grate design and increased airflow were recommended to reduce circulating load issues and increase circuit capacity. This paper summarises the crushing and grinding circuit review, the extended site trials performed by PTI and the improvements in dry grinding operation that resulted from this study."

"Mineral exploration in the Sicker Group, a belt of Paleozoic volcano-sedimentary rocks on Vancouver Island, has traditionally centred on auriferous polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits such as those currently mined by Westmin Resources Ltd. near Buttle Lake. Recently, however, the focus of exploration in the Sicker Group has shifted toward targets of structurally controlled gold concentrations, with notable success. Major north and northwesterly-trending structural features such as the Cowichan-Horne Lake break (one of several regional high-angle thrust fault s active throughout a long period of geological time) and related fault systems have contributed to localization of gold mineralization.Using the extensive information database compiled by MPH Consulting Limited during numerous exploration projects in the Sicker Group, two cross sections through areas with significant gold occurrences southeast of Port Alberni are presented. The cross sections combine geological, geochemical and geophysical data in an attempt to emphasize the relationship between structural trends and gold mineralization. Examples from specific properties, including gold discoveries along the Mineral Creek fault zone, are used to illustrate this relationship."

"The Kipawa yttrium-zirconium prospect is located about 150 km south of Noranda, Quebec. Yttrium-zirconium mineralization occurs in an elongate, regionally metamorphosed and deformed peralkaline complex in the Grenville terrain. The mineralized zone, as defined by =.0.10% Y2O3, is 1300 m long and 10 m to 30 m wide. Zirconium content typically ranges from 0.50 to 1.20% ZrO2, The mineralized zone strikes northwest and dips 20 degrees to 35 degrees to the southwest. It occurs at the structural base of the peralkaline complex in syenite gneiss and calc-silicate rocks and is conformable with both the footwall contact of the complex, and the layering and gneissosity in the enclosing rocks. Minerals of economic interest are eudialyte (sodium-zirconium silicate), mosandrite (sodium-titanium silicate), britholite (calcium-silica phosphate), and a few other uncommon zirconium and titanium silicate minerals.The highest and most continuous yttrium grades occur in the upper part of the syenite gneiss unit in areas containing eudialyte, mosandrite and minor britholite. Yttrium also occurs in britholite in calc-silicate rocks and in mosandrite in syenitic rocks in the lower part of the syenite gneiss unit. Both the yttrium-bearing minerals and yttrium grades are erratic in the lower part of the unit. Zirconium is generally more uniformly distributed than yttrium. A peralkaline granite gneiss phase of the complex intrudes the syenite gneiss and possibly truncates it, and the mineralization, near the southern boundary of the mineralized zone.The mineralized zone is coincident with a radiometric anomaly and discontinuous yttrium and zirconium soil anomalies.More drilling and metallurgical studies will be required to determine the economic viability of the yttrium and zirconium mineralization at Kipawa."

"Soil-gas Rn was measured by two types of alpha-particle-track detectors, by emanometry and by counting alpha-activity on Rn-decay-product collectors. Soil samples were analyzed for V by fluorimetric and fission-track methods, their Rn-emanation by decay-product collectors and their total alpha activities with track detectors. The same uranium anomalies were revealed by each method. Fission-track analysis of leaves for V showed only random variations with sampling site, and the Rn emanation of trees and leaves removed from them was barely detectable . The agreement among the other methods is significant, total alpha and collector methods are simple, rapid and useful, and a combination of methods at a site would reveal disequilibrium in the U-decay series if present. Track-Rn measurements are highly reproducible and insensitive to apparatus design and their sensitivity is not enhanced by covering the detectors with thin foil or placing them in large containers.IntroductionIn the past two years , a number of methods of geochemical exploration for uranium have been tested by the authors over the known copper-uranium occurrence at South March, Ontario. This was done partly to compare methods and partly to develop and test new ones. The South march deposit has been described a number of times by others(1,2,3,4). The methods included in this study were the following.Emanometry, Radon in soil gas is measured by pumping the gas into the cell of a scintillation counter or emanometer(5,6). Alpha particles from radon (222Rn) and its decay products (218Po and 214Po) produce scintillations of light in the silver-activated zinc sunphide (ZnS(Ag) covering the walls of the cell. These are counted by a photomultiplier tube and scaler, the count ra sulphide (ZnS(Ag) covering the walls of the cell. "IntroductionSeveral new smelting processes have been proposed and developed during the last 20 years. This has been true, in particular, for copper smelting technology. The important impulses for the advances in this field have been the recent demands regarding the environmental protection, energy saving and improved utilization of the metals contents of deposits, in particular that of complex raw materials.The methods developed more recently for pursuing these objectives have been outlined in several papers. In some of them the advantages and drawbacks of certain developments have been stressed. These documents are of great importance for assessing the different processes. The following paper tries to explain some details of the cyclone smelting process taking into consideration a few of these well-known presentations. The effectiveness of operation of the cyclone smelting process indicates that this process presents a significant achievement when compared with other conventional methods.The application of the CONTOP smelting cyclone range s beyond the field of copper metallurgy or the smelting of sulphide concentrates with the aid of oxygen. The research work carried out in the pilot plant of KHD Humboldt Wedag AG in Cologne-Porz also includes the recovery of the metal contents of intermediate products and processing of smelter residues which have to be converted in a disposable stat e, free of environmental pollution. SIDBEC commenced detailed planning of major capital expenditures to install integrated steelmaking facilities in 1969. Today, less than IO years later, SIDBEC and its subsidiaries have completed major mining, concentrating, pelletizing, direct reduction ? electric furnace steelmaking and continuous casting plants. The total cost of these projects was almost 1 billion dollars. The philosophy behind the project planning and the evolution of management control are explained. These extensive projects were undertaken during a period of exceptional inflation and a disturbed labour climate, but were nevertheless completed with only modest overruns, with good control of timetables and with exceptionally good start-up performance. Project planning, relations with consulting engineers, introduction of new technology, purchasing and field management and cost control are discussed.

The early identification of a kimberlite dyke and the occurrence of pyrope garnet grains along a section of the Munro Esker north of Kirkland Lake encouraged the search for kimberlites. Subsequent exploration using data from aeromagnetic surveys completed for the Kirkland Lake Initiatives Program (KLIP) resulted in the discovery of five kimberlite diatremes in the area north of Kirkland Lake and another one to the south. These are only a portion of the cluster of pipes found so far that probably occur in the area. Recovery of the diamonds present in four of the pipes yielded 16 stones, the largest being 0.17 carats. Unfortunately evaluation of the pipes is a problem due to the cover of glacial drift, up to 92 m in thickness, which makes it difficult to obtain an adequate bulk sample. A study of their ages, mostly from drill hole samples, suggest that the kimberlite diatremes and other alkaline ultramafic rocks were emplaced along a northwesterly zone of rift structures. These alkaline ultramafic rocks cut across all earlier rock types and have ages ranging from 121 Ma to 173 Ma. The zone of deformation, along which these rocks occur, has been named the Lake Timiskaming Structural Zone (LTSZ), a modification of Lake Timiskaming Rift Valley (LTRV). Ultramafic intrusions which were emplaced along the LTSZ can be traced from the James Bay Lowlands in the northwest to past Belleville on the north shore of Lake Ontario in the southeast, a distance of about 1070 km. As the emplacement of these rock types become known more are certain to be found by drilling selected aeromagnetic anomalies. The project has demonstrated that aeromagnetic surveys can be used successfully to identify covered kimberlite targets.

"The Department of Finance introduced draft amendments to the resource allowance regulations on July 23, 1992 that effectively nullify the decision in the Gulf Canada Limited case. Prior to the amendments it appeared that only ""directly"" related general and administrative, capital cost allowance and scientific research expenditures had to be deducted from resource profits. Now ancillary expenditures are required to be deducted. Consequently, the ability of taxpayers to claim the resource allowance is curtailed.IntroductionOn October 25, 1990 it was almost certain that taxable mines were going to get a break. The Federal Court-Trial Division had just decided in Gulf Canada Limited's favour to allow it to claim resource related tax benefits larger than what Revenue Canada evidently wished. Revenue Canada appealed first to the Federal Court of Appeal and then to the Supreme Court of Canada. On January 10, 1992 the Federal Court of Appeal agreed with the Federal Court decision and on July 2, 1992the Supreme Court declined to hear any further appeal. A mere three weeks later, on July 23, 1992, the Department of Finance issued draft ""clarifying"" measures to amend the calculation of the resource allowance. These measures effectively nullify the benefits that arose under the decisions of the Federal Court."

En 1995 la compagnie NIOCAN inc. fut incorporée; ses actions furent inscrites à la bourse de Montréal en 1997, et à la bourse de Toronto en décembre 1999. Jusqu?à maintenant, NIOCAN a investi plus de 7 millions de dollars dans le développement de sa propriété minière de niobium située à quelques 40 kilomètres au nord-ouest de Montréal. Le haut rendement économique des deux gisements principaux que compte exploiter la compagnie, le S-60 et le HWM-2, a été établie par des études de faisabilité effectuées par le consortium Met-Chem/SNC-Lavalin. La mission que s?est donnée NIOCAN inc. consiste à mettre en production ses deux gisements et à devenir ainsi productrice de ferroniobium dans les plus brefs délais. Figure 2 Le projet est présentement à un stade avancé d?obtention du certificat d?autorisation du ministère de l?Environnement. À plus long terme, la compagnie compte aussi exploiter les sous-produits de ses gisements (apatite, forsterite, magnétite, calcaire et terres rares).

Abstract-Plants have a remarkable ability to select, use and store metals derived from the substrate. Each species is unique in its requirements for and tolerances to the full spectrum of chemical elements in the Periodic Table. Studies to define the chemical characteristics of common trees and shrubs of the temperate forest are providing insight to their use for exploration, i.e., biogeochemical exploration. Examples of surveys over gold deposits in British Columbia show the effectiveness of sampling various tissues from different species in a range of biogeoclimatic environments. At the Nickel Plate mine in the Montane-Spruce zone, outer bark of Lodgepole pine was effective in defining a large area of metal enrichment; at the Carolin mine in the zone of Coastal Mountain Hemlock, analysis of twigs of western hemlock and Pacific silver fir provided an exploration target considerably larger than that defined by lithogeochemistry; at the Mount Washington gold deposit in the Mountain Hemlock zone, twigs of mountain hemlock and rhododendron were used to outline the mineralization; and in the Interior Douglas-fir zone at the QR deposit analysis of Douglas-fir tops collected by helicopter provided a rapid and effective method of identifying a gold-rich area.

"The Davy McKee combined mixer-settler (CMS), is a liquid-liquid contactor, which has been commercially applied to the recovery of uranium from dilute sulphuric acid-bearing leach liquors. CMS differs from most other solvent extraction systems in that the mixing and separation of the phases is carried out in the same vessel.IntroductionTypical solvent extraction plants for the recovery of uranium operate at organic to aqueous feed flow ratios of 1 : 2 to 1 : 30. Because it is beneficial to mix the organic and aqueous phases at an organic/aqueous (O / A) ratio of between I : 2 and 2 : I there is incompatibility between the over-all and operating O /A ratios.Conventional mixer-settler designs require an external recycle of the minority flow which results in the possibility of over-mixing, increased settling requirements and entrainment losses. Other workers have approached this problem in terms o f enhanced sett ling and this has been partly successful.Davy McKee's approach involved a radical rethink of the principles of liquid-liquid contact and separation.Description of CMSThe CMS has the important advance that the required mixing O/A ratio can be achieved without external recycle and is not affected by the O /A ratio of the feeds. Three zones co-exist within the CMS unit-a central mixing zone and upper and lower separation zones. A pump impeller on a draught tube is installed within the mixing zone and baffles are installed above and below the mixing zone. "Abstract- The accepted practice for the estimation of thin (2D) vein deposits recommends the use of the grade x thickness service variable (i.e., the accumulation). Grade estimates are obtained indirectly by the estimated accumulation/estimated thickness ratio. This practice stems from the varying support (thickness) problem and the resulting non-additive nature of the grade variable. We compare the actual performance of the direct grade estimation approach used by some practitioners to that of the indirect approach using accumulation. Our simulated and real data indicate that the direct approach is more accurate for point grade estimation where the grade-thickness correlation coefficient is positive (and vice-versa). Moreover, the relative gain of the direct method increases with the (positive) correlation coefficient. This finding contradicts common thinking that the indirect approach should be the preferred method where grade-thickness correlation is strongly positive. Also, for a given positive grade-thickness correlation, the relative gain of the direct method increases with the coefficient of variation of the grade and thickness. Résumé - L’estimation de veines minces (2D) minéralisées est normalement réalisée à l’aide de la variable auxiliaire épaisseur x teneur (i.e., accumulation). Les estimés des teneurs sont alors obtenus indirectement du rapport accumulation estimée/épaisseur estimée. Cette pratique découle du problème du support variable pour la teneur, l’épaisseur de la veine, qui fait que la teneur est alors une variable non-additive. Nous comparons les performances de l’estimation directe de la teneur, utilisée par certains praticiens, à celle de l’approche indirecte. Pour l’estimation ponctuelle des teneurs, nos données simulées et réelles indiquent une meilleure justesse de l’approche directe quand la corrélation teneur-épaisseur est positive (et vice-versa). De plus, le gain relatif de la méthode directe s’accroît avec la valeur de cette corrélation (positive). Ce résultat contredit l’opinion répandue que l’approche indirecte devrait être utilisée en présence de forte corrélation positive de la teneur et de l’épaisseur. Nous montrons également que pour une corrélation positive teneur-épaisseur donnée, le gain de l’approche directe augmente avec les coefficients de variation de l’épaisseur et de la teneur."

Over the past decade, the copper industry has been through an extended downturn followed by several years of sustained high copper price. A number of new technologies have been developed over the past 10 years aimed at reducing costs by decreasing energy, labor, and materials requirements, or by increasing metal recovery. The energy intensity of different copper extraction routes and different technologies varies considerably and this has a significant impact on the economics of extraction. Based on average ore grade materials, the total energy for the extraction of copper typically varies from about 24-26 MJ/lb (6.7-7.2 kWh/lb) for the mining, crushing, milling, flotation, smelting and refining route to about 14¬16 MJ/lb (3.9-4.5 kWh/lb) for the mining, crushing, heap leaching, solution extraction and electrowinning route. New technology developments are providing opportunities for significant reductions in energy consumption for copper extraction, representing energy savings up to 20-25% in some cases. In addition, in many cases, these new technologies have introduced environmental, safety and health benefits over the incumbent technology. Some of these technology developments have been more successful than others, and many hold great promise for application in the coming decade. This paper provides an overview of the technology developments that have occurred, and explores the underlying reasons behind successful implementation.

"The Williams Mine is Canada's largest gold producer, with annual production of some 500 000 ounces of gold from two million tonnes of ore. Highly mechanized and automated underground mining practices are utilized at the property in order to help achieve high levels of productivity and the most cost-effective mining possible.Planning and design parameters for the underground ore handling system at the Williams Mine are described in this paper. Particular reference is made to the considerations that were built into the system to provide maximum operating flexibility through the use of multiple orepass systems, portable low profile jaw crushers, underground conveyors and automated hoisting equipment.IntroductionThe Williams Mine is situated in the Hernlo area of northwestern Ontario, approximately 40 Ian east of the town of Marathon (Fig. I). It is operated by the Williams Operating Corporation, which is owned equally by Teck Corporation and Corona Corporation, and is one of three adjacent properties forming the HernIo gold camp.The mine commenced operation in October 1985 at a nominal production rate of 3000 tpcd. Through an ongoing capital development program, winch was completed in late 1989, the production rate at the property was increased to its current level of 6000 tpcd. This paper describes the mine planning process and the evolution of current mining strategies with particular reference to the underground ore handling system .HistoryGold mineralization was discovered in 1944 in the Hemlo area of Northern Ontario, near the north shore of Lake Superior. A year later, 11 claims were staked over the showing and subsequently patented by the late Dr. Jack Kerr Williams.Over the next 35 years, other claims were subsequently staked, explored and abandoned in the immediate area of the 11 patented claims . In 1980 a predecessor of the Corona Corporation acquired claims adjoining the Williams property to the east. Drilling on this claim group started early in 1981 and intersected the Hemlo orebody in May of that year. In December 1981, Corona Corporation entered into an option agreement with Teck Corporation to explore and develop the property.A drilling program by LAC Minerals on the II patented claims discovered the Williams orebody in March 1982. The mine started production in 1985, pouring its first official bar of gold on December 6 of that year. Corona Corporation was awarded ownership of the Williams Mine conclusively by a decision of the Supreme Court of Canada on August 11, 1989. The court's ruling ended a legal dispute with LAC Minerals over the property initiated eight years earlier."

"Most of the Paleozoic section of the Williston Basin is a thick accumulation of numerous carbonate to evaporite, shallowing upward, cyclic sequences. These sediments were deposited in broad epeiric seas, and the deposition of the evaporite facies marked the final stage of each cycle. Many of the sequences display a pervasive replacement dolomite in the uppermost portion of the carbonate units. This secondary dolomitization is, at least in part, an early diagenetic event, synchronous with evaporite deposition.The inception of evaporite precipitation resulted in the seepage of a dense, Mg-rich brine into the underlying sediment. The heavy brine moved down the gentle regional dip displacing the more normal marine interstitial pore fluid and dotomitized the primary calcitic sediments en route. The supply of Mg-ions decreased away from the source, and correspondingly, the degree of dolomitization decreased and larger crystals formed because of slower nucleation at fewer sites.The seepage refluxion of dolomitizing brines gave rise to the frequently observed textural variation of cryptocrys talline, impervious dolomite grading into a finely sucrosic, permeable dolomite down-dip. This diagenetic facies change provides the critical up-dip barrier for potential hydrocarbon reservoirs. The lateral pool boundaries are controlled by either structural relief or a similar diagenetic facies change. The reservoirs are capped by the tight evaporites.Hydrocarbon production is attained from diagenetic traps in the Mississippian Oungre Zone and the Ordovician Red River 'C' Zone .
