Research and applied utilization activities for the increased use of ferrous and nonferrous slags in construction are presented. The overall use of blast furnace slag is relatively well known for a range of construction applications from aggregates to slag cements. In contrast to blast furnace slag, which is volumetrically stable and straightforward in its construction uses, steel slag contains hydratable oxides that can result in volumetric instability that must be dealt with through appropriate steel slag aging, testing and quality control to ensure its appropriate use. Particular care must be taken to prevent potential steel slag expansive behaviour in confined applications. Quality requirements and guidelines on steel slag expansivity to further the use of steel slags, with demonstrated acceptable performance, are outlined. There is a full range of proven construction uses - from aggregate to cementitious materials - for copper, nickel and phosphorus nonferrous slag. The use of air-cooled nickel slag is presented, based mainly on practical highway construction experience. It has been shown that air-cooled, crushed nickel slag can be an excellent aggregate in granular base, engineered fill and hot-mix asphalt. There is a good potential for increased ground, granulated copper and nickel slags use as supplementary cementitious materials that is being developed, which takes advantage of the 'latent energy' content. The scope of a new technical text in preparation on the technology of slag utilization is reflected throughout to provide a practical context for the engineer.

"This paper presents a case study for optimizing water management at Gregg River Coal Mine located near Hinton, Alberta. The optimization study was derived based on a review and assessment of existing management practices and plans for future operation and final reclamation. A proactive water management strategy was developed to assist mine staff in adopting a rational, environmentally sound, and economical approach to water management. A plan was developed to provide for safe operation, self-sustaining operation, low maintenance, minimum negative environmental impacts, and anticipation of future needs for existing and future operations. A plan for final reclamation drainage was developed including establishment of effective, sustainable, and maintenance-free water management systems. The study demonstrated the importance and benefits of a proactive approach for integrated mine water management. This approach is recommended for other similar mine operations because it will improve environmental compliance and reduce costs of water management. IntroductionGregg River Resources Ltd. (GRRL) operates an open pit coal mine on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains, located about 45 km south of Hinton, Alberta. GRRL opened the mine in 1982 and expects to continue operations after Year 2000. GRRL has progressively reclaimed the disturbed area and expects to complete mine-land reclamation shortly after mining in the area is complete. The existing disturbed area and reclaimed area covers approximately 9.5 km2 and will expand to about 10.5 km2 upon mine closure.Like other coal mines in the mountainous areas of Alberta and British Columbia, the GRRL coal mine is subject to highly variable temperatures and moisture conditions. Average monthly precipitation varies from a low of 12.6 mm in January to a high of 113.0 mm in August, based on the precipitation record at the mine site since 1982. Despite the relatively high rainfall during the spring and summer months, excess water problems during rainfall events are quickly replaced by water deficit conditions during periodic droughts. Surface runoff varies from near zero in the winter to a mean annual monthly maximum of 78 mm during the month of June. The mean annual surface water yield is 345 mm."

"This paper discusses past and current energy use patterns in the mining and manufacturing sectors of the industrial minerals industry. Information is presented on the primary energy input types as purchased by the industry, the quality and form of the energy actually required by the various production processes, and the residual form of this energy, either embodied in the product or rejected in gaseous and liquid waste heat streams. With the continuing concerns about the availability of energy combined with the rapidly increasing cost of energy as a production input, the reduction of energy usage through improved efficiency will undoubtedly be an increasing priority for the industry during the 1980s. Reduced energy consumption through investment to improve energy efficiency appears to be advantageous from both the corporate and national perspectives.IntroductionEnergy, like labour and materials, is one of the basic production input s to the various mining, processing and manufacturing production stages in the industrial minerals industry. Energy costs, as a percentage of total production costs, have been well above the average for industry in Canada, accounting for more than 50 cents out of every dollar in the most extreme cases. Consequently, energy has always been a relatively important management concern in the industrial minerals industry.The energy supply and price situation in Canada and internationally has been changing rapidly since 1973, following a long period characterized by declining real energy prices and an abundance and wide choice of energy supplies. It is generally accepted that energy prices will continue to increase rapidly, and that there will be uncertainties about the long-term continuity of supply of some energy types. In essence, a period of relative stability has been replaced by a period of relative uncertainty. In such a changing situation, a reassessment of the role of energy as a production input is appropriate.The following sections outline some of the effects of the changing energy scene on the industrial minerals industry. These effects are dealt with primarily in terms of energy costs, because, in most circumstances, a change in the cost of energy as a production input is the end result of both energy price and energy supply changes."

This paper discusses Air Liquide's patented SPALTM (Surface Protection Air Liquide) technology and process for the inerting of coreless induction furnaces using cryogenic liquid gas. Air Liquide Canada Inc., in collaboration with Riverside Brass and Aluminum Foundry Limited (Riverside Brass), conducted plant trials to demonstrate the applicability of the SPALTM technology for copper-based alloys. Results showed that with SPALTM, Riverside Brass benefited from a significant increase in metal yield as the level of dross formation was drastically reduced. Together with the many other benefits of this technology, SPALTM demonstrated to be a non-negligible cost-effective solution to reduce metal production costs. In an effort to optimize the argon flow, different flow rates were used and the oxygen level above the metal bath was measured to pinpoint optimal flow. The results of metal yield, charge mix, dross formation, and melt temperature are compared with and without argon. The metal yield improvements are dramatic and calculated net savings are presented hereunder.

Backfilling increases the stability of underground stopes and may help reduce the environmental footprint from the mining operation. The barricades holding the backfill in place must be designed to prevent failure based on the total and effective stress states, which depend on fill properties, stope geometry, and filling rate. This paper presents results from a numerical study aimed at analyzing the stress states associated with the response of paste backfill following stope filling, with an emphasis on the short term behavior. The simulations illustrate how stresses evolve with backfill drainage and filling rate in a vertical stope.

Jinping I hydropower station is located in Sichuan Province in Southwest China. It is built on the Yalong River as a controlling cascade hydropower station in the middle and lower reaches, with power generation as its major function. Jinping I arch dam concerns many engineering issues and has attracted worldwide attentions due to its huge scale and unique settings. It is one of the most challenging projects in China with its 305 meters high arch dam and complex geological conditions for construction, including large-scale tectonic faults, intensively unloaded rock masses and geological asymmetry in its foundation. At present, the concrete arch dam construction has been completed and preliminarily impounded, most of the foundation treatments have been implemented, and four of six generator units had been put into operation in July 2014. In this paper, the analytical methods, design concepts, treatment measures and technical features of strengthening the geological defects in the dam foundation will be presented. Upon geological investigation into the dam foundation, a few large-scale weak discontinuities are observed. The rock masses in the left dam foundation are intensively unloaded, approximately to the horizontal depth of 150–300 m. These serious geological defects lead to a geological asymmetry on the left and right banks, and thus some major difficulties of dam construction are encountered. The influences of geological defects on the dam construction and safety are analyzed comprehensively, followed by the concepts and methods of treatment design. Based on this, the treatment methods of the weak rock masses and discontinuities are carefully determined by numerical analysis and scheme optimization, including the concrete cushion, concrete replacement grids, drainage system, anti-seepage curtains and consolidation grouting, which work together to enhance the strength and integrity of the dam foundation. Evaluations and calibrations through geo-mechanical model tests in combination with field monitoring results in early impoundment period show that the arch dam and its foundation are generally stable and function normally, which suggests that the research methods and treatment design schemes are reasonable and effective. The proposed treatment methods and concepts in the context are helpful for similar complex rock projects.

Material can be seen as the fuel needed to execute the project from inception to completion. Material installed provides good indicators of progress achieved onsite vis-a-vis project schedule performance. It correlates well with the role of the schedule performance index (SPI) of the earned value method (EVM). Material is recognized to have a significant impact on achieved progress for physical completion of project activities. This paper presents a study on the development of material status index (MSI) in support of the EVM. Unlike the SPI, the newly developed index account for the criticality of project activities. This is carried out considering the total float of each activity, percent float (i.e. the ratio of float to activity duration) and the total float of the path on which the activity is located. MSI, can independently and jointly with SPI provide root causes behind problems encountered during project execution. In turn MSI can reveal material related factors behind the performance detected by joint interpretation of the two indices. MSI serves to provide added value in alerting management to take corrective actions. While SPI and MSI may have different values, they can jointly augment and enrich the captured project status based on EVM. To demonstrate the capabilities of the developed MSI method, it is implemented on a case study. The case encompasses the construction schedule of a hydro power station constructed in northern Quebec. Different scenarios are adapted from the real case to demonstrate a set of practical aspects of the developed index. The results generated from the analysis of the case study illustrate the useful features of MSI beyond those of the traditional SPI on two fronts; causation and the considerations of criticalities of actives.

"The Malartic gold camp includes the Malartic Gold Fields, Barnat, East-Malartic, Canadian Malartic and Sladen mines. From 1935 to 1984, these mines have yielded 212 403 kg of gold. They occur within a 900 m wide belt of highly sheared, dislocated and faulted volcanic and sedimentary rocks (Piché and part of the Pontiac groups) herein named the Malartic Tectonic Znne (MTZ). The zone trends WNW-ESE and separates two lithotectonic sedimentary domains, the Cadillac to the north and the Pontiac to the south. The sedimentary domains are characterized by their coherent fold generations consisting of open to tight reclined and recumbent F1 folds that have been refolded into series of asymmetric upright F2 folds. A flat-lying schistosity (S1 ) and a vertical pressure-solution cleavage (S2) are ubiquitous throughout. Discrete sets of brittle and brittleductile faults are synchronous and parallel to each of these two fabrics.The MTZ trends N320° in the northwestern sector of the town of Malartie, changing to N2800 at its easternmost extremity. The Malartie and Sladen faults constitute its northern and southern boundaries respectively. These two faults also bound another set of faults oriented N305°. Throughout the MTZ, the faults at N280° and N320° and those at N305° outline a series of anastomosed motifs that constitute the principal structural feature of the Malartic district. Locally, a fourth set of minor faults at N065° combines with the other three prominent sets. All these faults have disrupted the gold-bearing volcanic, sedimentary and intrusive rocks encountered throughout the MTZ.The MTZ comprises numerous lozenge-shaped blocks of komatiites and basalts or greywackes and black shales which are cut by disjointed dikes, sills and small intrusions of felsic and mafic rocks. The latter includes gabbro, diorite, lamprophyre, monzonite and pegmatite. They frequently fill conjugate sets of fractures. In some areas, they are clustered into coalescent intrusions. The present morphology of these intrusive bodies( cube, chocolate-tablet boudin, parallel epiped and cigar) is not representative of their primary forms but the result of late shearing and faulting indicative of a major tectonic event subsequent to their emplacement. The intrusions were injected during a brittle stage of deformation related to the F1 folding but prior to the development of the F2 folds and subsequent tearing and shearing by late brittle and brittle-ductile faults . The ultramafic and mafic rocks are intensely altered to serpentine, tremolite, actinolite, carbonate, biotite, hematite and pyrite according to the nature of their proto/it h. In the vicinity of the MTZ, all lithologies exhibit mineral assemblages indicative of the upper greenschist or lower amphibolite facies of metamorphism.The structural evolution of the MTZ involved superimposed folding, shearing, transposition, mylonitization, brittle and brittle-ductile faulting. Each lenticular motif results from the combined effect of conjugate sets of shear zones that outline lozenge-shaped blocks where strain markers indicate different strain states from cores to margins. Bedding in ultramafic flows and/or sedimentary rocks is either NW-SE or NE-SW within the blocks but, in the vicinity of the Malartie and S laden faults, it has been rotated to become subparallel to the faults.Ore shoots are most commonly associated with altered and deformed bodies of diorite and monzonite, or some mafic and ultramafic schists and, at the Canadian Malartic, Sladen and East Malartic mines, with metasedimentary rocks. The shoots occur in close proximity to the various faults of the MTZ but the gold itself is intimately associated with pyrite, biotite and carbonate in halos bordering fractures crisscrossing the different host rocks. "Most mining operations utilize the tailings coarse fraction for backfilling while the fines have been traditionally disposed on surface in tailings ponds. Recently, paste fill has been developed which uses a fraction of the fine tailings (10-30% w/w of <45 µm) in the fill (Brummer and Moss, 1991). This development allows a mining company to use a portion of the fines for backfill, but still requires surface impoundment of the unused tailings. Reactive tailings have the added problem of generating acid after being oxidized in the presence of air and water. Treating acid mine drainage (AMO) from these ponds has proven to be a costly environmental problem and a long term liability.One practical method to reduce the environmental impacts associated with the tailings pond is to modify the physical and chemical prope1ties of the fine tailings so that they can be utilized in an environmentally safe manner. This was accomplished by agglomerating the tailings into pellets and using theses pellets as a coarse aggregate in a total tailings paste fill. This technology does not require any supplemental sand or gravel to be added to the fill.This paper presents the ongoing research into utilizing these tailings agglomerates as a coarse aggregate fraction, in order to create a total tailings paste fill which has supe1ior strength characteristics.IntroductionThe Canadian mining industry produces more than 500 million tonnes of tailings and waste rock annually. The waste rock is usually returned underground for use as rock fill in underground support with the tailings remaining to be disposed of in tailings ponds. Tailings consist of a coarse and fine fraction, and can be either reactive (acid generating) or non-reactive. In an effort to minimize tailings disposal, the coarse fraction has been used underground in backfill along with alluvial sands. This diversion of the coarse fraction, however still requires that the fine fraction be disposed of in tailings ponds. This disposal creates the potential for acid mine drainage (AMO), since in the presence of air and water, reactive sulphide tailings can generate acid. It is therefore an important goal in the mining industry to minimize the disposal of fine tailings into tailings ponds since the treatment of AMO is a costly and long-te1m environmental liability."

This paper discusses microstructural changes produced by two novel approaches using electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) in which periodic strain fields/microporosity was incorporated within the large columnar grains of Zr02- 8wt.%Y2O3 (8YSZ). The traditional columnar microstructure of partially stabilized zirconia has been slightly modified to produce a lower thermal conductive thermal barrier coating (TBC) by periodically interrupting the condensing vapor resulting in microstructural modifications with diffuse or sharp interfaces and morphological changes on the sub-micron scale without changing the composition of the TBC. These microstructural modifications resulted in a 20-30% reduction in the thermal conductivity, 28-56% increase in hemispherical reflectance, improved oxidation cyclic life (over 100%), and better strain tolerance as compared to standard ZrO2-8wt.%Y2O3 deposited on platinum-nickel-aluminide and CoNiCrA1Y bond-coated MAR-M-247 test samples. The TBC with tailored microstructures were examined by various techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), steady-state laser heat flux technique, and hemispherical reflectance.

In this research work, a process was described for the recovery of copper and zinc in copper converter flue dust from the Black Sea Copper Works&apos; Samsun Smelter Plant. After characterization of a representative flue dust sample, the process included roasting of the flue dust and then leaching in dilute sulfuric acid solution. Roasting time and temperature were studied to determine the optimum roasting conditions. Sulphuric acid concentration, duration, temperature of leaching and solid to liquid ratio were the parameters studied in the bench scale laboratory leaching experiments.

As the Cadia mill was the first 40ft diameter SAG mill, commissioned in 1998, its performance, liner and discharge design attracted considerable international attention. Twelve years on, the liner design and the control philosophy are being readdressed to further improve the mill?s performance. A comprehensive series of 3D liner scans, over life of the liner, have been used to calibrate liner mass loss and progressive changes in the liner profile. This data is being used to provide true charge mass and mill filling, plus progressive trajectory profiles over life of liner. This information, along with measures of mill performance over liner life, is being used to select the optimal operating conditions as the liner wears, and hopes to inform future liner design.

The need for selective metal separations has increased as the mining industry encounters more complex ore bodies and demand for higher performance end products expands. The Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT) process uses highly selective SuperLig® resins to remove desired metals from a variety of solutions in the mining and metals processing and recovery industries. MRT separation processes efficiently produce high purity metal products. In this paper, applications of MRT to metal recovery at mg/L to multiple g/L concentration levels are presented and discussed. Specific examples in the precious metal, nickel, cobalt, zinc, copper, and rare earth industries are given.

"This paper reviews the evolving Ontario mining regime for mining industry-Aboriginal engagement and its apparent alignment with court decisions, domestic law, emerging international norms, mining industry rules, and mining firm-Aboriginal agreements, drawing on publicly available commentary from government officials, the private sector, and Indigenous communities. "The Williams Mine, Canada's largest gold mine, processes over 6,000 t/d of ore utilizing SAG/ball milling, leaching and CIP, carbon stripping, electrowinning and refining to produce gold dare bullion.Grinding accounts for over 50% of milling costs with grinding media, power and mill liners making up over 75% of grinding costs. Since 1991, several changes in these areas have been made which have significantly reduced costs, while fineness of grind and mill recovery have both been increased.This paper discusses the changes made in the grinding circuit over the past few years and assesses their impact on operating costs and mill operations.IntroductionThe Williams Mine is located in the Hemlo area of northwestern Ontario, about 40 km east of Marathon. It is operated by the Williams Operation Corporation, which is equally owned by Teck Corp. and Homestake Canada Inc. Canada's largest gold mine, the Williams Mine commenced operation in October 1985 at a rate of 3, 000 t/d. Mill throughputs have typically exceeded design, averaging 3, 397 t/d in 1986, and 3,380 t/d in 1987. In August 1988, production was increased to 6,000 t/d. Throughput averaged 4,212 t/d in 1988. Production increased over the next few years averaging 5,477 t/d in 1989, 6,248 t/d in 1990, 5,987 t/d in 1991, and 6,283 t/d in 1992. With a recovery of over 95.5%, production for the first three quarters in 1993 is averaging 6,408 t/d.GeologyThe main ore body is a steeply dipping conformable zone of microcline-quartz-muscovite rock. It occupies the contact zone between hanging wall metasedimentary rocks and foot wall felsic quartz feldspar porpyritic rocks of possible volcanic or subvolcanic intrusive origin. The ore body is enveloped by muscovite schists which are thickest on the footwall side. The schist is enriched with tourmaline, pyrite, and green mica containing vanadium and barium. The ore body contains pyrite and barite which occurs mostly in laminae and bands to veinlets and breccia fillings. The gold occurs as free (native) grains, 20 to 30 µm in size at grain junctions of the microcline and quartz. Visible gold is rare in the main zone. There are commonly two or more discernable layers of economic value which are separated by weakly gold mineralized material which usually consists of muscovite schist, barite rich zones or sulphide poor-microcline-quartz rock and in the upper and western fringes by biotite rich schist with feldspathic fragmental characteristics. Molybdenite is a common constituent as very fine disseminated grains in the microcline-quartz rock and is most prominent with gold enrichment. Stibnite and realgar are two of the more common accessory sulphides."

Sintering and ceramic bonding in refractory castables take place mainly in the binding system during the first heat-up and in service. Consequently the strength and the corrosion resistance of the hot face layer depend on the sintering ability of the complex mix of ceramic powders constituting the binding system. As a result, the use of nano- sized reactive powders in the binding system mixes would activate the sintering and enhance the ceramic matrix formation at temperatures below 1300°C. Our work presents the experimental data on sintering behavior of binding systems containing magnesium aluminate and alumina nano-powders in the temperature range of 800-1450°C. The results indicated that a ceramic matrix, similar to high temperature fired bricks, could be generated after firing at the relatively low temperatures available in the non-ferrous smelting furnaces.

The Somita plant processes low sulphide gold ore in Burkina Faso with a CIL process. After experiencing recurrent low gold recoveries, Somita undertook an investigation on the source of the problem. COREM conducted a mineralogical study on different pit samples. A series of tests was also conducted on a composite sample from the plant which shows a content of 3.4 g/t in gold and 0.48 % in graphite. A reference test in laboratory resulted in a recovery of gold of 75%, similar to plant recoveries for the evaluated ore. In these tests, even if cyanide is not deficient, it was diverted mainly into iron cyanide complex, copper cyanide complexes and by graphite adsorption. Causes of low recovery were also identified and quantified. Solutions to increase gold recovery were suggested such as increasing gold dissolution kinetics by O2 or by lead nitrate addition, change in activated carbon addition point location to the 1st cyanidation tank and finer grinding to increase liberation. Increase in the pH could also contribute to reduce cyanidation consumption. Following these recommendations, Somita changed carbon addition from tank 2 to tank 1 in the CIL circuit. This change led to an increase of more than 5% in gold recovery. A system for the addition of lead nitrate is also under implementation at the plant and benefit will be evaluated in 2013. Finally, pit management for cyanidation will be done based on mineralogy instead of gold content in the future.

Petrographic, chemical and isotopic compo itions of auriferous and non-auriferous quartz vei ns from the Sta r Lake and Flin Flin-Amisk Lake areas of northern Saskatchewan indicate diver e origins fo r the fluids associated with gold mineralization. In the Sta r Lake area, the metavolcanic , Star Lake pl uton, and heared mafic dikes have retained their original igneous 81 80 values. The 81 80 value of quartz from mi neralized veins vary by I per mi! and range from+I0 to+IJ. The only quartz ample having a 81 80 value outside th is range came from a vein not associated wi th a dike or gold mineralization . Quartz from the Star Lake pluton has identical 8180 value to the qua rtz from mi neralized vei ns which suggests that the vei ns and the pluton are related to imilar proces es. The diffe rence in 81 80 values between mi neralized and barren vein may erve a a potential exploration tool in this area. Because o34S val ues of a limi ted number of amples of pyrite from gold-bearing quartz vei ns at Star Lake correlate directly with gold content. the gold may have been syngenetic with the su lphur and the 834 value may be useful for exploration . 8180 values of co-existing quartz, calcite, and amphibole in the veins from Star Lake indicate that isotopic disequilibrium among the minerals is common, but the val ues also record a high temperature of formation (ea . 500°C) involvi ng a component of magmatic fl uid. TheoD value of hydrou mineral from Star Lake retain their original igneous values but whole rock values are generally much lower, an effect attributed to interaction of the minerals with a late meteoric water. In the Fl in Flin-Amisk Lake area, auriferou and barren quartz veins formed from a mixture of hydrothermal and metamorph ic flu id at lower temperatures (ea . 350°C) than those at Sta r Lake. Becau e there i no apparent correlation between 8180 values of the quartz with gold content or relative age of the vein , nor between the 834S val ues of pyrite and gold content, table isotopes appear limited as an exploration tool in the Fl in FlonAmisk Lake areas.

The first claim in the district was located in 1887; but there was little activity until 1890; when the showings that later became important were staked and development began. Production increased rapidly from 1; 800 tons in 1894 to a peak of 360; 000 tons in 1903; and averaged 286; 000 tons for the next 13 years. It declined sharply in 1917; and continued to decline until the closing of the main mines in 1928. Between 1933 and 1941 leasers mined a further 137; 000 tons. Total output has been about 6; 200; 000 tons; with average recovery of 0.47 oz. gold; 0.6 oz. silver; and 1 per cent copper. The total value was $82; 500; 000; of which aboµt three-quarters was in gold; the camp still leads the province in total gold produced. Ninety-eight per cent of the tonnage came from a small compact area worked by four inter-connected mines : the Le Roi (39 per cent); Centre Star (25 per cent); War Eagle (24 per cent); and Josie (10 per cent); all now owned by the Consolidated Mining and Smdting Company of Canada; Limited.
