"Unaltered biotites from three samples of monzonite and gabbro from the Copper Mountain stock and a single sample from a pegmatic biotite-chalcopyrite vein cutting the Triassic Wolf Creek formation have a mean K-A age of 193±7 m.y. These data support a suggestion based on geological evidence that Copper Mountain ore deposits are related genetically to the Copper Mountain stock.A cogenetic mineral pair (biotite and clinopyroxene) from a sample of sericitized and chloritized monzonite of the Copper Mountain stock have identical K-A ages of 150 m.y., which probably represents a time of wide-spread, post-ore, hydrothermal alteration. This alteration is believed to be related genetically to a group of post-ore intrusions known as the ""mine dykes,"" suggesting that they also have an age of 150 m.y."

"Crystalline Flake Graphite is a strategic mineral. Since 1954 nearly all North American consumption has been imported from offshore. The Bouthillier Project in Quebec, Canada, is Orrwell Energy's bid to enter the market, with plans to begin production of a 500 TPD operation in 1984.Milling of flake graphite is considered easy, yet more problems have been encountered in flowsheet and plant design than in most other minerals. A fresh approach to existing technology was taken, giving results that are highly satisfactory. The key to graphite liberation without flake deterioration is found to be in autogeneous grinding. In addition to producing marketable coarse graphite by such autogeneous grinding, flotation and tabling, super purity fines can be produced using repeated regrinding, elutriation and flotation. This paper discusses the design of a 500 TPD plant based upon the results obtained from bench and pilot plant studies. INTROOUCTIONWhen the Black Oonald mine at Calabogie Ontario ceased production in 1954 nearly all North American crystalline flake graphite had to be imported from offshore. Orebodies in the United States were too small or too low in grade to be exploited economically.The Houthillier Township near Mont Laurier in Quebec (Figure 1) was a known graphite-bearing area The Orrwell property in that area was delineated in 1957 Some test work including minor footage of diamond drilling was carried out by Italia Copper and the MHM Syndicate prior to 1981 when Orrwell acquired the property"

In this study the results of a series of numerical simulations which are conducted for one of the tunnels of the Mashhad metro line 2 project are presented to evaluate the role of tunnel face support pressure and soil strength parameters on deformation of tunnel lining and face deformation. To achieve this goal, comparative numerical simulations of a mechanized tunnel advance in soft non- homogeneous soil on top of the ground water table and beneath the building are conducted and sensitivity analysis is performed. Development of a step by step tunnel construction process is modeled using a three dimensional finite difference model (FLAC3D) taking into account all the relevant components of shield tunneling. In order to understand the mechanism of the effects of a variety of support pressures on face deformation and lining stresses, numerical simulations are conducted. It is found that the use of different face supports causes a considerable influence on the forces of tunnel lining. In addition, it is revealed that building weight help to change the stress paths and the stress distributions in the tunnel lining.

"This paper provides a description of the Highmont copper-molybdenum concentrator from primary crushing through grinding, flotation, tailings disposal and water reclamation. The unique features of the operation will be emphasized.IntroductionThe Highmont property is located in the southern portion of the Highland Valley adjacent to and east of Lornex and about 4 miles south of Bethlehem Copper. The plantsite is at an elevation of 5100 ft.Highmont acquired the property in 1966 and in 1969 Teck Corporation entered into an exploration agreement which contained the option to finance the property to production . A detailed feasibility study of the project was completed in 1971. A positive production decision was deferred at that time because of the prevailing soft copper market and relatively low molybdenum price. The development of a strong molybdenum market in late 1978 and early 1979 led to a re-examination of project economics, and a decision to proceed to production was made in April 1979.The Highmont ore zones occur adjacent to and on either side of an east-west-trending quartz porphyry dyke. The two major zones , the east and west pits, contain 122 million tons of ore assaying 0.27070 Cu and 0.029% Mo. Chalcopyrite, bornite and molybdenite are the minerals of economic interest. Chalcopyrite is the predominant copper mineral. Mineralization occurs primarily along fractures and is zoned according to fracture density. Some pyrite is present, but for the most part it is outside the ore zone. Surface oxidation is shallow throughout the orebody.Wright Engineers Limited were responsible for the major part of the engineering design. Site construction, which began in the spring of 1979, is under the direction of Commonwealth Construction. The first concentrator line is scheduled for completion late in 1980, the other for early in 1981."

"In 1984, a provincial inquiry into ground control and emergency preparedness in Ontario mines was commissioned by the Minister of Labour for Ontario. One of the recommendations put forth by the committee conducting this inquiry was that the Ontario mining regulations be modified to address more effectively the assessment of mine design. Mining regulations now require that every mine in the province annually assess its design with respect to ground stability. Subsequently, the Ministry of Labour has embarked on a ground control audit program to gather as much information as possible about the ground control programs in place at Ontario mines. In 1988, 47 underground mines were audited. The audits are intended to provide an overview of the level of engineering effort that is devoted to ground control on a provincial basis, by identifying the type of geotechnical information that is collected by each mine and how this information is used for stability analysis purposes in rationalizing excavation and support system designs. Also, the audits serve as an indicator of the severity of ground stability problems at individual mines, and how these problems are dealt with.This paper consists of information that has been extracted from the first series of ground control audits that were conducted in 1988. Specifically, the paper describes the types of support systems that are used in Ontario mines. It also discusses the rationale for local ground support selection, and the quality control programs that are in place for assessing the performance of installed ground support. As well, the type of geotechnical information that is collected, and to what extent it is used for the purpose of designing ground support systems, is reviewed"

Accompanying global energy shortage and high energy prices, shale gas has been the focus of exploration and it has attracted great attention from both academia and industry. The combination of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing enables the extraction of huge quantities of shale gas from impermeable shale formations. During the process of hydraulic fracturing, great amounts of water, sand and chemicals must be injected into the shale formation at a high pressure, which may trigger seismicity. Such events could occur due to the presence of faults or the reactivation of these potential faults. Shale is the main component of source rock in the Sichuan Basin, China, and has the greatest contribution to the natural gas of the basin. In order to investigate the fracturing mechanism of shale in the Sichuan Basin, China, a series of rock fracture tests under triaxial compression were carried out in the laboratory in order to investigate the hydraulic fracturing behavior in relation to the seismicity. Based on the high multichannel waveform recording system, the detailed spatio-temporal distribution of acoustic emission due to micro-cracking was used to examine the deformation and fracture behavior of shale. In addition, the effects of confining pressure on the deformation and fracture in shale under triaxial compression by acoustic emission monitoring and X-ray computed tomography were discussed in the paper. The experimental results indicate that the shale samples demonstrate brittle fracture behavior. The confining pressure has a great effect on the complexity of the fracture planes and the spatial distribution of acoustic emissions, but few contributions to the location of the major hydraulic fracturing plane. The foliation of shale plays a dominant role in the rupture process and the geometry of the major hydraulic fracturing plane. The high confining pressure increases the strength and restrains the deformation of shale during compression process. These results shed some light on the understanding of onset of hydraulic fracture initiation not only for shale gas exploration and production, but also for CO2 geological storage and underground energy storage.

"Mining research at CANMET is delivered by the Mining Research Laboratories Division (MRL), with facilities in Sydney, Nova Scotia; Bells Comers, Elliot Lake, and Sudbury, Ontario; and Val d'Or, Quebec. This paper gives an overview of the work of the Division as of early 1993. An addendum, at the end of this paper, describes the organizational changes that will take place in April 1994. IntroductionCANMET, the acronym for the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology, is the name by which the organization founded in 1907 as the federal Mines Branch is presently known. The name was changed in 1974, in order to give recognition to the importance of both minerals and energy technologies in the activities of the Branch. Further reorganizations have taken place since 1987. As a result of these, CANMET has assumed the status of a Sector (equivalent to the Geological Survey of Canada) and has been organized into four branches.The organization as a whole functions in an environment of semi-matrix management. Some of the ""line"" Divisions report to Directors-General for the appropriate branches while other, larger divisions, report directly to the Assistant Deputy Minister.The second dimension of the organizational matrix is composed of a number of ""staff' divisions which report to the DirectorGeneral for Policy and Planning. Each of these Divisions performs a function which is common to all of the ""line"" divisions. For example, the Research Projects Office is responsible for monitoring the range of research activities of CANMET and for recommending allocations of funds for both research contracts and operating budgets. The Library and Documentation Services Division is responsible for CANMET publications and information services. Likewise, the Engineering and Technical Services Division provides support through, among other services, the construction of specialized laboratory equipment."

"The pendulum in Ottawa has swung dramatically from fiscal policy to monetary policy over the last several years. International trends indicate that the pendulum has to start its swing the other way, if Canada's mining industry is to maintain its preeminent position in the global mining arena. This article, which is based on a paper presented by the author at the 37th Annual Meeting of the Newfoundland Branch of CIM, identifies these trends and how they could interact with Canadian policy.IntroductionThe title of this paper is not a very imaginative or catchy one, but it states the topic quite succinctly, if not tersely. This paper looks into a crystal ball to see what might be in store for mine financing over the balance of the current decade.In the event that the reader feels some trepidation about the prospect that such a paper could seek to be the definitive work on the subject, it should be made clear at the outset that this is not the case. The author is, after all, not an economist, a scholar, a financial analyst, or a soothsayer, but is rather a simple accountant who has been closely involved with the mining industry, and the financing thereof, for some twenty years.The paper recognizes that, while a mine may be born when production begins, the mine is conceived when exploration starts. As this act of conception is obviously an essential part of mining, the financing of exploration is also covered in this paper. "The comments given are to help allay generally accepted ideas that the handling of arsenic as arsenic-trioxide (As2o3J in and from off gas pyrometallurgical operation fumes is difficult, hazardous and expensive. It need not be any of these things if the basic and rather unique chemic3l and physical properties are understood and taken care and advantage of through present day technologies. These particular characteristics are:-(1) As2o3 sublimes and re-condenses, at a relatively low temperature;(2) As2o3 is, for practical in-plant purposes, insoluble in water at ambient temperatures and quite soluble in water just below the boiling point;(3) residual suspended and dissolved As 2o3 can be removed from water by complete dissolution with very little sulfuric acid, followed by the addition of small amounts of ferrous sulfate and calcium chlorate, with oxidation to the ferric and arsenite state and precipitation of an insoluble ferric calcium arsenate, thereby lowering the As2o3 content of solutions to acceptable levels. Even lower levels of non-toxic forms of arsenic solids and residual As2o3 in the water solutions can be attained by also using phosphate, and lime, along with the above.A background re past arsenic processing methods, present day operations, plus predictions re future trends, and hazards, are outlined."

"Gold cyanidation rates are known to be limited by the rate of oxygen dissolution in the cyanidation tanks. The effect of solids loading on the oxygen dissolution rates is not obvious and the results of previous studies are ambiguous. The present paper presents an analysis of oxygen dissolution rates using a ""spent"" commercial gold slurry diluted to various levels of solids loading. It was found, in an 170 litre stirred tank reactor using an inverted cone sparger, that under certain high loading conditions, there was a decrease of as much as 50 %, i.e., there was a halving of the rate of oxygen dissolution as compared to that in clean water. In particular, it was observed that, due to gas flooding of the impeller, there was a drop in kLa even with an increase of gas velocity. Gas holdup reached a maximum value of only 1.7 %. The total power consumption was between 0.06- 0 .10 kw/m3 within the range of gas velocity before flooding occurred. The decrease in oxygen dissolution rate with increased solids loadings is believed to be mainly due to the increase in the apparent viscosity which reduced the turbulence and shearing effect and resulted in larger bubbles and hence reduced the reaction area a. The interrelations between solids loading, gas holdup, flow pattern, power consumption, and liquid mass transfer coefficient are discussed.IntroductionThe reactors generally used in gold cyanidation are Stirred Tank Reactors (STR). Compared with other types of reactors like fluidized bed reactor and column reactor, STR is of particular importance due to its wide application in industry. It is reported that the stirred tank reactor is used for more than 50 % of the world's chemical production (Xu and McGrath, 1996)."

"Recent land-use decisions in British Colwnbia, and the publication of a report on compensation for expropriations of resource interests, have highlighted the nature of land use policies. Landuse decisions, such as the creation of large new parks, raise three principal issues which have implications for how land-use policy is conducted and how it impacts on the mining industry. The first is the identity of the parties advocating different land-use policies and their motives for doing so, the second is the changing nature of benefits derived from land, and the third is the change of property-rights regime which is devised to accommodate the (changing) benefits from using land and natural resources, as well as the interests of the different parties involved.Involved Parties and BenefitsThe process of establishing or modifying property rights depends on the interest groups involved. Three distinct categories, each with distinct incentives which can influence the process, must be distinguished: private claimants, politicians and bureaucrats (Libecap, 1989).The first groups claim rents and management powers through asset ownership. They may be incumbent owners seeking enforcement of the status quo, new claimants seeking redistribution of assets, or third parties who depend on the distribution of assets (e.g. lenders, labour suppliers and contractors). Some infonnal property arrangements can be negotiated within the group whereas others requires action in the political arena through lobbying politicians for (re)allocation of property rights and influencing bureaucrats for favourable administrative decisions. The second category is politicians, who direct the powers of the state to change or enforce property rights. Both incwnbents and office-seekers fall in this category and their actions and opinions are shaped by their constituencies and financial backers. However, not all causes can be championed and trade-offs have to be made, resulting in decisions that maximize political benefits. The third category of parties in the process is the bureaucrats. The power to manage has been delegated by politicians but bureaucrats also have opportunities and incentives to further their own interests. These can include maintaining or expanding jurisdictional turf or increasing operating budgets (Libecap, 1989)"

"High iron solution concentrations often result in the formation of basic ferric sulfate during the high temperature oxidation of sulfidic materials such as base metal and refractory gold concentrates. Consequently, the “Hot Cure Process” followed by limestone neutralization is required to facilitate subsequent processing and/or disposal of the leach residue. The present paper discusses strategies that can be employed to influence the composition and nature of the high-iron content leach residues produced during pressure leaching.INTRODUCTION Control of iron deportment in hydrometallurgical processing remains a key challenge for a range of reasons. Strategies generally relate to the control of conditions under which iron is optimally rejected (Demopoulos, 2009). Supersaturation provides the driving force for crystallization and this can be controlled by a number of factors that include (1) pH and/or Eh control, (2) the presence of matrix anions and impurities, (3) dilution, (4) complexation and dissociation and (5) manipulation of the rate at which the metal to be precipitated is released to solution. Each of these factors is impacted by temperature. Good control of crystallization is essential to the control of precipitate properties such as the degree of crystallinity, stability, particle size and quality which covers both the extent of impurity uptake and suitability of the precipitate for waste disposal. The quality and properties of iron precipitates in turn can impact downstream processing. It is the aim of this paper to discuss the generation of iron-containing residues produced during the pressure oxidation of sulfidic ores and concentrates and how the nature of these can be controlled to potentially facilitate further processing. A brief overview of several related topics will now be given and include, where relevant, discussion of work undertaken in our laboratories. In addition, brief discussions of selected process options that enable good control of iron rejection will be provided."

Mines today use various methods of mining to extract ore. Because of the dangerous nature of many of these processes, remotely controlled LHD machines are being used to extract the ore from the draw point. The remote control system, although being made safer all the time, has remained virtually unchanged for many years. The basic functionality is an operator switching the machine to remote control, getting out of the cab, walking up a stand, operating remotely, returning to the cab, switching to manual, driving manually, switching to remote, and switching to manual. It seems repetitive, and time consuming, does it not? Networking, convergence, video, voice, and data infrastructures, and other technologies are growing by leaps and bounds in virtually every industry and region, except for mining. From the comfort of the living room couch, a Canadian can play hockey online with full voice conversations over the Internet with someone in Russia in real time. Yet, a mine superintendent must jump through hoops to have a private conversation with the front line supervisor underground. "Is Joe around anywhere?" If Joe hears the message, he will respond. If not, who knows? Maybe he's hurt. Maybe he's not. Where is Joe? Nobody really knows, and that is scary. Today, surface knows that the workers disappeared into the cage at 7:00 a.m. They also know that the workers will probably and hopefully return at 3:00 p.m. Is there not a better way to handle this? With such a complex industry, it seems as if, for the most part, the introduction of new technology into mining has either been overlooked or has been met with some resistance. It is time to step back, look at the process, and see how it can be improved. Key areas of focus will be safety, productivity, dependability, and cost-effectiveness.

"Chairman - To start this discussion off, I wonder if Mr. Dave Livingstone or Mr. Jeffrey of Granisle Copper would give a description of the crushing plant at Granisle since it is somewhat different from the usual plant, W. N. Jeffrey - Granisle Copper The main difference between the Granisle crushing plant and many others is the Livingstone method of putting the screens under the crushers instead of above them. This method allows a more compact arrangement and eliminates the heavy superstructure required to take care of the screen vibration when the screens are mounted above the crushers. There is a small surge bin above the tertiary crusher which takes care of the variation in circulating loads.All three crushers are gyratory crushers. There is no grizzly ahead of the primary crusher but the fines are removed from the primary crusher discharge at the first screen and sent directly to the fine ore bins. For anything too large for the crusher to handle, we use what is known as the Esco hook, which is a type of grapple used to remove oversize rocks.The disadvantage with this equipment is that the crane is too slow. "The permeability and specific storage of rocks and sedimentary layers deep underground are critical parameters for issues related to the buried evaluation of natural gas and oil, CO2 aquifer storage, various kind of waste storage and so on.The Shirahama sandstone of the Wakayama prefecture, Kii peninsular in central Japan, consists mainly of quartz grains with no cracks and rock fragments that are aggregations of various kind of minerals. The quartz grains have an average size of about 150 micron. The pre-existing pore sizes were distributed dominantly at approximately 1 micron, and the total porosity was about 13%.During the hydrostatic compression test, we measured permeability of Shirahama sandstone by Transient Pulse test for three mutually perpendicular directions. Permeability of Shirahama sandstone remained fairly constant while increasing the effective confining pressure. Permeability anisotropy was observed slightly in the normal and two parallel directions to the bedding planes.We used micro focus X-ray CT with high resolution of 10 micron to visualize and measure the voids space information in Shirahama sandstone. Three-dimensional data were obtained in the intact and stressed sandstone simultaneously. Pore structures and grain boundaries were clearly distinguished. Pore closure and grain movement were clearly observed with increasing confining pressure. Micro focus X-ray CT is an effective tool to visualize and measure the geometrical information in rocks.Three-dimensional medial axis (3DMA) method was introduced to quantify the flow-relevant geometric properties of the voids structure in Shirahama sandstone using µfocus X-Ray CT data. The number of connecting path between two faces, tortuosity and the shortest path distribution within an arbitrary region of Shirahama sandstone specimen were analyzed. Geometrical information on the number of connecting path shows reasonable correlation between permeability anisotropy and mutually perpendicular directions normal and parallel to bedding planes. In addition, we introduced numerical simulation of fluid flow of pressurized Shirahama sandstone by LBM, to discuss the permeability change caused by pressurization on effective confining pressure. We obtained the detailed distributions of fluid pressure and fluid velocity in relatively narrow voids space more than 10 µm. It was confirmed that pressurization effect on permeability caused by the decrease of the connecting path and the shortest path between arbitrary faces, and then caused a complex condition on fluid pressure and fluid velocity."

?Reclaiming the land? in the Athabasca Oil Sands is becoming a household phrase in Canada. Advances in soil salvage and placement, increasing biodiversity of forest ecosystems and improved design of the landforms are beginning to change the trajectory of the ?reclaimed land? towards a boreal forest. The boreal forest is much more than just a forest; in the area of Fort McMurray AB, roughly one half of the boreal forest is composed of organic wetlands, often called muskeg. How important is muskeg to the boreal forest ecosystem and to the local aboriginal people? Should muskeg be reclaimed? Can muskeg be reclaimed? Ten years ago it was broadly accepted that organic wetlands could not be re-established; in fact this was so well accepted that reclamation of organic wetlands had not been attempted. Over the past decade this conclusion has been re-evaluated and research projects have been undertaken to examine the potential to create organic wetlands in a reclaimed oil sands landscape. This paper examines these questions and the research initiatives necessary to reclaim the other half of the Athabasca Oil Sands.

The copper demand is booming. New epicentres with strong dynamic economic growth have arisen in China and other emerging markets. Furthermore, Europe contributes to higher copper demand due to positive economic growth. China and India are therefore expanding their smelter industries, with the backing of a coordinated policy of global raw material sourcing, which includes investments in raw material deposits and state-run measures to support their international trade and competition. Likewise, Europe faces scarcity of copper raw materials. The copper industry in Europe is historically grown and shows excellence in environmental protection and technical leadership. Recycling has always been an important sector. This reiterates the recycling-know-how which exists in the European sector. However, Europe still relies on importing a considerable amount of raw materials from foreign countries. As a result, the global competition for copper and copper raw materials has increased. Tough competition as regards industrial location and costs, the emergence of corporate concentrations and the use of protectionist trading practices by countries like China and India, which distort the markets, now determine the picture. Hence, a copper smelter in Europe is forced to develop tailor-made concepts to safeguard and improve its international competitive position. It is imperative that this is also flanked by improved conditions on the local level and a European raw material policy which takes account of the changed situation on the world market.

The main purpose of this publication is to present relevant advances in processes and technologies of importance for consideration in the design of new refineries and the modernization of existing refinery facilities. Operation at current densities of between 300 A/m2 and 350 A/m2 is already part of the criteria customarily implemented on recent projects. This is due in part to the development of permanent cathode technology. In recent years, this technology has also been integrated with process control and automatic electrode handling and preparation machines. The combined implementation of these technologies has the advantage of enabling the process to be monitored, thus assuring traceability and allowing greater knowledge of the process to accrue.

"The Agnew (also known as the Perseverance) nickel deposit and its northern extension, the Rocky's Reward deposit, form one of the world's largest accumulations of nickel sulphides hosted by komatiites. Agnew was previously classified as an ""intrusive dunite-associated"" deposit . It has now been shown that the sulphides are hosted by komatiite flows which underlie an adcumulate-textured dunite body that crystallized in a large lava channel.The rocks of the mine area have been subjected to a metamorphic temperature of550°C and pressure of up to 3 kb. The komatiites have mostly been reconstituted to olivine-amphibole chlorite assemblages. There is a zoned sequence of enstatite-, anthophylite-, talc- and antigorite-bearing assemblages inwards from the western margin of the ultramatic reflecting variations in the CO/HP ratio of metamorphic fluids.Facing directions are determined from variations in the proportions of metamorphic minerals and in rock compositions which reflect asymmetric layering in the flows . Olivine-sulphides matrix ore is hosted in a single 50 m thick, east-facing flow that is overlain by flows containing massive sulphides. Much of the massive sulphide has been physically remobilized into fold noses, faults and shear zones. Chemical diffusion of ore components has upgraded a sulphide-rich metasedimentary unit where it is in structural contact with massive ore.To the north, the mineralized flow sequence is separated from a stratigraphically higher komatiite sequence, the Perseverance ultramafic complex, by approximately 150 m of felsic meta volcanic and meta sedimentary rocks. Southward, the Perseverance ultramafic grades laterally into an olivine adcumulate body and its lower contact cuts progressively down stratigraphy until it lies directly on top of olivine-sulphide ore of the mineralized flow sequence. This discordant contact is interpreted as the base of a thermal erosion channel formed by a voluminous komatiite lava flow. This contact greatly influenced later deformation of the mineralized flow sequence."
