Gypsum scrap generated from wallboard manufacturing, construction and deconstruction activities in North America, Europe and Japan is a recognized environmental problem. Landfill disposal of this gypsum scrap is problematic, with deposits often creating hydrogen sulphide emissions and metallic sulphide groundwater leachates. Of these regions, Europe is the most advanced in dealing with the issue having enacted legislation, which will come into effect in July 2005 that will strongly encourage gypsum recycling throughout the EU. An estimated 10% to 17% of all gypsum used in the wallboard industry becomes recyclable scrap, which represents approximately 1% of the total waste stream in North America. In the United States, 2.5 to 4.5 Mt of gypsum scrap is generated each year; the volume is similar in Europe (the percentage of total tonnage is less because of the higher use of brick and concrete). The Greater Vancouver region of British Columbia has banned gypsum from its landfills, and as a result, all gypsum scrap is now recycled. New West Gypsum Recycling, a Canadian firm, uses its proprietary technology to process large quantities of gypsum scrap that is reincorporated into new wallboard, at percentages ranging up to 25%. The operation of New West Gypsum Recycling Inc. of Langley, Vancouver is examined as a case study and recommendations are provided as to how other urban regions can implement similar gypsum scrap recycling programs.

About 90 per cent of Manitoba's industrial minerals production is for structural materials. Most of these come from the Paleozoic rocks west of the Precarnbrian Shield, or from glacial deposits that are extensive throughout Manitoba. The major raw materials are sand and gravel, and carbonate rocks for crushed stone (and also dolomite for high-magnesia lime, high-calcium limestone for lime and Portland cement, and dolomitic limestone for Tyndall stone). Glacial lake clays are used both in cement and in lightweight aggregate. The Jurassic and Cretaceous strata exposed along or near the Manitoba Escarpment include siliceous, carbonaceous, kaolinitic and illitic shales, all of which are quarried by Red River Brick and Tile in the Pembina Mountain and Ste. Rose areas for use in a brick plant at Lockport. Non-swelling bentonite near the base of the Pembina Member of the Upper Cretaceous Vermilion River Formation is of value as an absorbent clay, and is the only commercial source in production in Canada. It has been quarried by Pembina Mountain Clays Limited since 1940. Gypsum occurs in the Jurassic Amaranth Formation and supplies much of the market for wallboard and Portland cement additive in the Prairie Provinces. Quarries are operated at Gypsumville by Domtar Construction Materials Limited, and north of Amaranth by Westroc Industries Limited. Silica sand from the Ordovician Winnipeg Formation is of glass-grade quality, and about 100,000 tonnes are produced annually by Steel Brothers Canada Limited on Black Island . It is used as a glass sand, as foundry sand, for sand blasting, and as a filter-bed sand .

Surface mining operations typically require run-of-mine material to be sized for further processing. In-pit crushing facilities serve this need, as stationary, semi-mobile or fully mobile units. Although in particular fully mobile crushing facilities have been in use for over half of a century, other surface mining techniques have typically been implemented. However, with increasing operating costs in truck and shovel operations, and other economic considerations, mobile crushing plants are increasingly a viable option. The operational and economical parameters in relation to the optimal surface mining equipment selection will be reviewed. The role of the mobile crushing technology within the continuous vs. noncontinuous surface mining operation and basis for mine planning are also discussed. Current applications and respective case studies will be reviewed. Key performance indicators will be presented. These performance parameters can be viewed as a tool to aid in the equipment selection process. The future direction for further research and development in mobile crushing facilities will also be presented.

Brick shales and refractory clays are mined at Sumas Mountain near Abbotsford. Sholes and stoneware clays elsewhere in the province have not been developed. THE SUMAS MOUNTAIN deposit near Abbotsford, 80 km east of Vancouver, has been in continuous production since 1905. The deposit is exposed in a small outlier and comprises a sequence of alternating beds of clay and sand. Beds are of Eocene age. Within the 400 m thick ness of sediments are seven distinctive conglomerate members, some up to 20 m thick, interbedded with fine grained sediments including claystones and siltstone , or "shales". Shale is quarried to produce a variety of bricks, sewer pipes and similar products; it is also used for cement. Several different shale beds have been mined over the years and exhibit a variety of fired colours ranging from buff-pink grey to deep red; pyrometric cone equivalents (PCE) range from 3 to 20. A layer of fireclay 3 to 4 m thick that occurs at the base of the sequence has pinkish white to light buff fired colour and PCE of 30 to 33. It is used as a 266 primary component to produce refractory bricks. The shale is quarried and processed by Clayburn Industries Limited of Abbotsford. Another similar but smaller outlier of the same geological formation is known from Blue Mountain, about 20 km northwest of Mission. Other ceramic clays in British Columbia are reported from Quesnel (7 m bed of white stoneware clay, PCE 17 to 19), Giscome Rapids (25 km north of Prince George, 10 m bed of stoneware clay to PCE 31) and anaimo-Comox area (buff to red firing "shales", PCE 8 to 10-1 12) . From 1959 to 1974 Cretaceous shale from Saturna Island in the Strait of Georgia was used to produce lightweight aggregate. Similar deposits of expanding shale are known from the vicinity of Duncan on Vancouver Island.

"The Ansil deposit is located in the Noranda mining camp in the southern part of the Abitibi greenstone belt. /twas discovered in 1981 and production began in 1989 with proven reserves of 1.58 Mt grading 7.2% copper, 0.9% zinc, 26.5 glt of silver and 1.6 glt of gold. It is centered at a depth of 1.3 kilometre and represents one of the deepest ore discoveries ever made from surface.The deposit consists of a single massive sulphide lens located at the contact between the Northwest Rhyolite and the Rusty Ridge Andesite. The lens strikes north-south and dips 50° east. The thickness of the lens may reach up to 35 m and can change very abruptly both along strike and along dip. The maximum thicknesses of the sulphide lens are reached in its upper (western) and at its lower (eastern) edges, thus giving the deposit its present shape of two sulphide domes connected by a thinner central portion. The lower dome is underlain by a thick accumulation of massive magnetite which may reach 10 to 15m in thickness. The upper and lower domes are underlain by two distinct pipe-shaped zones of stringer and disseminated sulphides which merge with a larger stringer zone at depth.The Ansi/ deposit displays strong relationships between its morphology and the distribution of metals. Hydrothermal alteration consists of chloritization and sericitization. Chlorite alteration is closely associated with stringer sulphide mineralization while sericite is developed in diffuse zones bordering the chloritic zones. Unlike other similar deposits, the Ansil deposit is characterized by very extensive alteration and sulphide mineralization in the hangingwall of the massive sulphides. Several features of the deposit are consistent with an origin from a submarine hydrothermal system which was particularly long-lived, and which thus promoted the build-up of very high fluid temperatures with extensive replacement (and enrichment) of pre-existing sulphides after their original deposition onto the seafloor."

"Abstract - Electrical and structural characteristics of formations favorable for sulfur occurrences in northeast Syria are described using geo-electrical prospecting methods. Simple (VES) and combined (CVES) Schlumberger vertical electrical soundings and geo-electrical profiling using a Wenner configuration were applied to the Teshreen structure. Six profiles (A, B, C, D, E, and F) at the borders of anticlines, where positive and negative structures are joined and salt formations have a tendency to disappear, were studied.Secondary structures, characterized by high apparent resistivity exceeding 3000 Ohm.m were located on each profile using a Wenner profiling configuration. These secondary structures are demonstrated to be favorable for sulfur prospecting by both drilled wells and vertical electrical soundings. Traditional interpretation of the 84 VES measurments is supported by data from 14 CVES measurments. The CVES technique is a powerful tool, due to its improved resolution of the electrical boundaries.Thicknesses and resistivities of the Lower Al-Fares, Al-Garibeh, and Al-Dibbaneh formations were determined through the interpretation of VES measurments. The same VES measurments were then interpreted using the Pichgin method, whereby all the subsurface tectonic features were determined for depth penetration corresponding to AB/2 = 1000 m. The integration of the first and second VES phases creates a clear picture of the subsurface, including tectonic, geometric, and geoelectrical information. In summary, the sulfur occurrences in the research area are controlled by tectonic paths that are well defined by geo-electrical methods. These diverse geo-electrical methods could be used successfully for sulfur prospecting in similar environments."

"Paramount to sound aggregate resource management is an awareness of what resources exist. For the past six years, New Brunswick has been conducting granular aggregate resource inventories in and around urban centres as a means of documenting, both qualitatively and quantitatively, these resources.These aggregate studies require extensive ground truthing due to the often small nature of the surficial feature s as well as extensive foliage. Approximately 35% of the province's land mass has been mapped at a 1:50,000 scale as part of this on-going program. Reports are published annually and include data on size analysis, lithology soundness, abrasion and absorption.Aggregate deposits in New Brunswick frequently reflect the local bedrock lithology and, whereas much of New Brunswick is underlain by soft, friable sandstone of Pennsylvanian age, it is necessary to transport aggregate for higher-specification use considerable distances. Alternatively, the construction industry must turn to crushed stone as a source of asphaltic or concrete aggregate.Over 40% of New Brunswick's land mass is owned by the Crown, and aggregate resources are managed under the Quarriable Substances Act. Under this legislation, permit applications are reviewed by a Land Management Advisory Committee which consists of representatives from the various government departments involved.IntroductionSurficial materials either directly or indirectly form the basis of much of our economic activity, whether it is the field of agriculture, forestry, manufacturing, construction or other. In this paper, we review cases in which dramatic and visual swelling problems are experienced in underground structures. Swelling rocks have caused many problems in underground engineering projects. They pose severe problems to the design, construction and maintenance of underground openings. If an appropriate integrated design procedure, which proceeds from exploration, tests, analyses and realistic assumptions of swelling behavior, is used during the design stage, the execution of the project can be completed without any serious delays or dramatic design changes. The case histories were subdivided into three classes that include tunnels, underground coal mines and others. For the evaluation of cases, the surrounding rocks, swelling minerals, water inflow, swelling test results and swelling problems were considered. The main purpose of this review is to inform the reader about potential problems with swelling phenomenon and to emphasize the rehabilitation and extensive cost which are encountered due to the lack of necessary integrated design approaches.

The Songwe Hill Rare Earth Element (REE) Project in Malawi is a near surface carbonatite-hosted deposit with synchysite and apatite as the key REE bearing minerals. A strong focus has been placed on understanding the REE mineralogy of the Songwe Hill carbonatite as REE mineralogical characterization is a crucial component at all steps, ranging from exploration to production, in the development of REE deposits. Extensive mineralogical work has been completed at Camborne School of Mines (CSM), Natural History Museum (NHM) London, British Geological Survey (BGS), Nottingham, Aberystwyth University, Wales, Mintek, South Africa, and SGS Inc. Canada (SGS). The following analytical techniques were used: scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron microprobe analysis (EMPA), laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), and QEMSCAN®. The detailed studies have demonstrated that while synchysite is light-REE enriched as expected, apatite, abundant in all stages of carbonatite emplacement at Songwe, is anomalously enriched in mid- to heavy-REE relative to apatite in other carbonatite deposits. The distribution of REE within synchysite and apatite at Songwe has had important implications for the direction of the metallurgical work with respect to the behaviour of light and heavy REE through the flotation and hydrometallurgical stages of the flow sheet.

"Cominco's Polaris Mine is a lead-zinc underground operation that began commercial production in early 1982. The mine site is located on Little Cornwallis Island in the Canadian Arctic at a latitude of 75°23'N and at a longitude of 96°55'W. The nearest settlement, Resolute Bay, some 100 kilometres southeasterly from the mine, is accessed from the mine by light aircraft. The mine site can be accessed by sea during the six-week ice-free period each year. During this time all major operating supplies are brought to the mine and the lead and zinc concentrate products are shipped out to market.GeologyThe Polaris orebody lies near the top of the Thumb Mountain Formation of Ordovician age. This formation is a relatively homogeneous section of thin to medium bedded limestones which are brecciated and dolomitized in the area around the orebody. The deposit is described as a Mississippi Valley-type orebody. Ore minerals are sphalerite and galena with the waste being predominantly dolomite with calcite and marcasite. The ore is quite porous with voids being generally filled with ice as the mineralized zone lies entirely within permafrost. Reserves consist of about twenty million tonnes of ore grading 3.8% Pb and 14.3% Zn with a further three million tonnes of inferred ore at a slightly lower grade.The orebody strikes in a north-south direction with the hangingwall dipping at about twenty degrees to the east. It is generally conformable with the stratigraphy. The footwall in the western portion of the orebody, the Panhandle, lies about 10 to 30 metres below the hangingwall. To the east the footwall drops sharply, creating an orebody height of up to 110 metres in what is referred to as the Keel Zone. The Panhandle Zone has typically 80 - 110 metres of cover above the hangingwall , About 25% of the reserves are in the Panhandle Zone, the remainder being in the Keel Zone. Figure I illustrates a plan view of the orebody relative to other surface facilities on the property and Figure 2 illustrates a simplified section through the Panhandle and Keel Zones."

This paper looks at how changes in the economies and demographics of the eight largest copper-consuming countries have been affecting their consumption of copper. The period of 1976 to 2005 is considered. Annual changes in measures like intensity of use of copper, per capita consumption of copper, copper consumption based on per capita income, and copper consumption from industrial production for each country and in aggregate are calculated. Other factors like the change of industrial production relative to total GDP and population/age trends are also considered for the individual countries. Non-parametric and parametric statistical tests are used to determine the significance of observed trends and relationships for individual countries and in aggregate. The results give insights into how copper consumption is changing for the countries and what economic/demographic factors are driving these changes. These insights provide some guidance about where copper consumption trends are headed in the future.

"Generally speaking, the most intensive efforts at dust control in the mining industry have, in the past, been concerned with underground operations and where uranium ore or high silica material is processed. In the past several years, Stoop Rock has made Intensive efforts to reduce dust levels in it's Iron ore pelletizing complex. There have been no great engineering break-throughs with regard to dust control in such plants, and certainly no new engineering techniques have had to be applied at Steep Rock. This paper deals with how significant improvements in dust levels have been achieved through minor modification to dust collectors and ventilation units, improvements in operating practices, and education of supervisors and hourly personnel.PROCESS DESCRIPTIONSteep Rock Iron Mines is located 120 miles west of Thunder Bay near Atikokan. (fig. 1) Run-of-mine ore is pelletized along with some -1"" concentrate that has been processed in the concentrator (a summer operation only), which utilizes gravity separation to upgrade a mechanical mixture of ore and waste."

Magnetic seeding flotation (MSF), i.e. adding magnetic seeds and pre-magnetization-flotation, is a new flotation technology especially for fine particles, which improves the flotation performance by enlarging the apparent size of the particles in a way of magnetic agglomeration. Both the fine coal slimes with a size of 66.68% –38µm and the pyrite slimes with a size of 73.95% –23 µm were investigated by the MSF, respectively. Flotation tests with variable of dosages of magnetic seeds and polyacrylamide were conducted, and some measurements, such as laser diffraction size analysis, magnetic susceptibility by vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and infrared spectroscopy (IRS), were also applied in order to probe the mechanism of the MSF. Based on the tests, measurements and calculations it was found that both the recovery of coal and the flotation kinetics of pyrite slimes increased with the additions of the magnetic seeds, and in the presence of polyacrylamide the coal flotation was further strengthened due to a synergetic effect of magnetic seeds and polyacrylamide on the flotation and a relatively larger apparent size of slimes after additions of magnetic seeds and polyacrylamide. The reason for the MSF lies in fact that the presence of the polyacrylamide intensified the adsorption of magnetic seeds on the coal particles and increased the coverage of the magnetic seeds on the coal surface from 0.2 to 1.3 wt%, resulting in increased magnetic susceptibility of coal particles from 9.13×10-9 to 22.17×10-9 m3/kg and thus a low magnetic field strength of pre-magnetization needed for the magnetic agglomeration among the coal particles from 602 to 24 mT prior to proper flotation. IRS shows that polyacrylamide chemisorbed on the surfaces of both coal particles and magnetic seeds, thus acting as the bridging media between particles and seeds.

Optimizing production scheduling in open pit mines is important for managing cash flows of mining operations. This paper describes a new, probabilistic, mixed integer programming (MIP) formulation which has been developed to minimize the risk of not achieving planned production targets, in terms of metal production and ore tonnage feed for the mill during production, while considering maximization of total discounted economic value. The new MIP model also recognizes that to minimize movement of excavators over long distances and accommodate equipment access, the blocks scheduled for mining within a period cannot be spread too widely. The model is applied to a laterite nickel-cobalt deposit, as an example of multi-element deposits that have complex ore quality constraints. The results show that the proposed model generates feasible schedules. When compared with traditional optimization techniques, the new model is superior in terms of minimizing the risk of not meeting production targets, especially at the early stages of production, and in terms of generating practical scheduling patterns.

"This paper presents a discussion of the mechanisms by which aerosols of the process electrolyte are entrained into the breathing environment of copper, Zinc and nickel eIectrowinning tankhouses. Literature outlining the health effects associated with worker & posure to the acidic and metallic contaminants found in the airbome aerosols is summarized and compared with existing North American regulations.A brief review of the existing technologies for the source reduction of these aerosols is presented. This paper outlines the industry experience with use of covers, balls, beads, shapes, fixtures and chemical surfaetants. Each of these devices is ranked according to its effusiveness in the process in which it is used, and rated according to its operator acceptance.The various forms of existing in-plant ventilation systems are reviewed with a discussion of their relative merits and effectiveness. Actual experience is related, detailing the methods of testing for ambient contaminant levels in a variety of tankhouse environments. Guidelines are provided for the site and process specific criteria which govern the selection and ultimate effectiveness of a particular form of ventilation system.Finally, actual project experience is cited in which hydraulic modelling is used a design tool in tankhouse ventilation design. These projects include the upgrading of existing traditional ventilation designs, and the ''grass roots"" design of a more efficient aerosol source control system to be used in high altitude, cold weather sites."

Since the beginning of time, people later to be known as engineers and architects have strained to create methods whereby they could improve technology to assist them in their various fields of endeavour. Some of these improvements would be the change from linen paper, french chalk and ink pens to drafting film , mylar an d pencil for the production of drawings, the drafting machine in lieu of the tee and set squares, even tap e to attach drafting media to the board instead of thumb tacks and man y, man y more. All of these taken individually are insignificant but combined evolve to the current state-of-the-art in the computerized engineering environment. Ten years ago the major topic o f conversation was the hand-held calculator which for a cost of around $150 would give most trigonometric functions. Today the equivalent calculator can be purchased for around $25, is about one third the size, and if inflation were included over the last ten year s the item should cost around $550 in today' s dollars, it can be seen that tremendous advances not only in the technology but also the cost saving. The following paper is intended to outline some o f the significant aspects o f the latest technology in the computerized engineering office namely Interactive Graphics Systems.

"This is an extended abstract for a keynote lecture delivered by the author during the 2015 ISRM congress in Montreal on the application of the numerical discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA) method in rock mechanics practice. Due to the large scope of the topic this lecture will focus on studies performed by the rock mechanics group at Ben-Gurion University, alone or in collaboration which other research groups, and is not intended to provide a comprehensive review of everything that has been done on the subject worldwide during the past two decades. A forthcoming textbook (Hatzor et al., in preparation) will attempt to provide such comprehensive coverage.DDA has been developed by Dr. Gen-hua Shi while he was doing his PhD studies under the supervision of Professor R. E. Goodman at U. C. Berkeley (Shi, 1988). Dr. Shi has invented a new numerical discrete element method which provides a solution for dynamic deformation of block systems, hence its applicability to rock mechanics practice. The method is similar in essence to the finite element method in its implicit formulation of the time integration scheme and where in every time step the minimum potential energy of the entire system is sought, but here every element is a finite block with six degrees of freedom. The blocks are assumed to be stiff (simply deformable) so that most of the energy is consumed by slip along pre-existing discontinuities, the frictional resistance of which is assumed to obey the Coulomb-Mohr failure criterion for rock joints. The greatest advantage of DDA over alternative numerical discrete element methods is its robust area (volume) integration which ensures great accuracy even when the blocks are of irregular shapes, including non-convex blocks which may contain holes. The greatest disadvantage is the necessity to solve in every time step very large matrices of unknowns, imposing great CPU demand when the block system involves a large number of blocks. Another disadvantage is the sensitivity of the solution to the choice of the penalty parameter which is implemented in DDA in the form of stiff springs that are attached to contacts once detected automatically.The inherently dynamic formulation of the DDA method lends itself to solution of dynamic problems in rock mechanics. Dynamic analysis with DDA can be performed in different ways corresponding to different rock mechanics problems and loading conditions. Three main classes of loading conditions which are relevant to rock mechanics applications are discussed here: 1) dynamic loading of a single bock which rests on a stationary foundation, 2) response of a block to dynamic loading of the foundations, 3) wave propagation through a block system.The most common approach is to introduce the dynamic force to a specific block in an otherwise fixed block system and check the resulting deformation, typically the time dependent displacement or rotation of the loaded block. This approach is particularly useful for dynamic rock slope stability studies when a stability of a specific rock block against earthquake vibrations is in question. The first 2D-DDA benchmark test of this approach was performed by Hatzor and Feintuch (2001) who introduced harmonic acceleration functions into a block which rests on an inclined plane. The analytical solution proposed for this problem by Hatzor and Feintuch (2001) was later generalized by Kamai and Hatzor (2008). The first 3D-DDA benchmarking for this approach was presented by Bakun-Mazor et al. (2012) who studied single and double face sliding of blocks which rest on stationary foundations and subjected to harmonic input acceleration functions."

Glue, thiourea and chloride are the common reagents which are used in copper electrorefining to achieve fine-grained and smooth copper deposition. While thiourea and chloride are clearly defined chemical substances, glue is a natural product consisting of a mixture of amino acids in different constituent parts. The amino acids are continually degraded in the electrolyte by hydrolysis until they finally become completely inactive. This effect is well-known, largely constant and balanced by the continuous dosing of glue. In contrast, the behaviour of glue in the batch container is not always foreseeable. The glue can become partly or completely inactive by contamination with acid or bacteria, for instance. Usually this is not noticed, and partly or fully inactive glue is added to the electrolyte over a longish period, with the result that the copper growth is significantly impaired. Examples from operational practice show that, with the help of the CollaMat system, partly or fully inactive glue batches can be quickly detected.

"The current state-of-the-art of chloride hydrometallurgy for treatment of complex sulphide bulk concentrates is reviewed. General considerations regarding the various flowsheet steps are examined and options discussed. Then, individual flowsheets are presented and discussed. Finally, the forward prospects for chloride hydrometallurgy for treatment of complex sulphide bulk concentrates is considered and conclusions drawn concerning the likely application of this technology in the future. IntroductionHydrometallurgical processes for treating sulphide concentrates, in general, have received considerable attention over the last three decades or more. Many flowsheets have been developed, many pilot-plant studies have been undertaken and several processes are now successfully operating. For example, direct ammoniacal pressure leaching has been used by Sherritt Gordon Mines since the 1950s to extract nickel from pentlandite concentrates, the roast-leach-electrowin route is widely used to recover zinc from sphalerite concentrates and direct sulphuric acid pressure leaching of sphalerite concentrates has been successfully commercialized. Also, Duval Corporation operated a direct cupric/ferric chloride leaching process (Schweitzer and Livingston, 1982) with electrowinning to recover copper from chalcopyrite concentrates, this process (now closed) being the only chloride process which has been commercialized for a sulphide flotation concentrate. Despite these developments, it has long been considered, particularly for copper sulphide concentrates, that direct hydrometallurgical processes are in the main unlikely to be able to compete successfully with smelting for large-scale operations of simple high-grade single metal concentrates. As long as such concentrates can be produced commercially, smelting is likely to remain the principal processing route (Flett, 1981). This view is being challenged nowadays through pressure leaching developments made by Dynatec and CESL in Canada and the recent start-up of the Western Metals Gunpowder plant at Mt. Gordon in Queensland (Flett, 2000). Complex sulphide ores offer even greater opportunities because of the ability to produce a bulk sulphide concentrate from the complex sulphide ore with considerably higher metal recovery than is often possible from the production of individual metal sulphide concentrates from differential flotation. Interest continues to focus on hydrometallurgical solutions to these processing problems, particularly with regard to chloride hydrometallurgy. "This paper describes a highly versatile variable speed unit with a torque multiplication feature as a direct replacement for a fluid coupling .The unit is comprised of a modulating clutch with torque converter and lock-up options.The UCD does not start or stop the motor. This is carried out in the normal manner.The UCD continually monitors and rapidly regulates the output speed to the requirement of a set point demand from input signals or a pre-set program with full manual override.The pre-set program can include start and stop ramps, top speed and minimum speed regulation and also mid-speed set point with security for man-riding, etc. Speed variation is from zero to 100% on a constant duty basis.The input signals can be from any source, e.g. belt weigher. load profile bunker probes, mine monitoring system, etc.The UCD when fitted with a torque converter has a torque multiplication feature which automatically provides a starting torque up to two and a half times greater than the full load torque without exceeding the normal motor power levels.IntroductionIt is common practice in the mining industry to drive conveyors, whether they be belt or chain, through a transmission system incorporating a fluid coupling between the driving motor and gear-box .However, there are drawbacks and in an effort to attain a better degree of drive and control, two-speed motors - inverters cycle- converters - hydrostatic drives, etc ., have been introduced."
