The preparation of a paper read before this Society in 1927 on Undersea Mining led to representations to the Deputy Minister of Mines at Ottawa, Dr. Chas. Camsell, and to the Director of the Geological Survey and the Director of the Mines Branch, which resulted in the undertaking by these bodies of a geological, physical, and chemical survey of the Sydney coalfield, combined with revision of the geological maps, on all of which much progress has been made. Preliminary studies revealed the necessity for a new base-map on a scale that would permit the representation of the whole coalfield from cape Dauphin to Mira bay on one sheet, and in the making of this map the Geodetic and Topographical Surveys have collaborated, with the assistance of airplane surveys for filling-in of detail. The new map will show all the data accumulated by 50 years of active mining and will show also the extent of mine workings, with level-contours under the sea. Dr. W. A. Bell, of the Geological Survey, has, over a number of seasons, studied in the field the historical geology with the purpose of elucidating the sequence of earth movements that have determined the structure of the coalfields, especially those that have governed the course and extent of the complementary folds that traverse the Sydney coalfield. Dr. B. R. MacKay, of the Survey, and the officers of the Fuel Testing Laboratories at Ottawa have made exhaustive studies of the Phalen seam, chemical and microscopic, intended to elucidate the conditions under which this seam was deposited, and some very interesting conclusions have been reached.

"A study of the physical properties of long grades of asbestos fibers imported into the United States during the past eight years has disclosed information that will contribute materially to effective selection and use of fibers for electrical products. The study embraced fiber lengths, volume resistivity under three different conditions, total iron by chemical analysis, magnetic rating, conductivity of an aqueous ex-tract and its sodium chloride equivalent.The fibers examined included chrysotiles from Rhodesia, British Columbia, and Barberton area; marlime from Bechuanaland and Province of Quebec; amosite and crocidolites from Africa and Australia; and anthophyllites from Mozambique and from Georgia in the United States. Volume resistivity values provide a relative basis for estimating the electrical performance of end products; magnetic rating -an estimate of the quantity of iron compounds present in excess of those in the asbestos structure; conductivity of an aqueous extract; and an estimate of the ionizable impurities in fibers.Tests of these factors yield in-formation, not heretofore generally known, which may serve as a guide in the evaluation of asbestos fibers for electrical products."

The application of cationic flotation to the upgrading of magnetic concentrates was investigated in the laboratory by both batch and continuous test procedures. It was found that the collection of coarse gangue particles with amine, heretofore considered a serious obstacle to this particular application of cationic flotation, is greatly enhanced by a drastic reduction in what might otherwise be considered normal impeller speed. Gangue flotation is in-dependent of variations in the rate of aeration. The collector and Crother additions and the impeller speed which favour the formation of a matte froth yield optimum results.

DELN ITE Mines Limited is located in Deloro township, on the west end of the south break of the Porcupine Camp. Mining operations are currently being carried out on the downward extension of a system of quartz veins in an andesite zone. This zone has been followed from surface to the present bottom level of 5,250 feet. The changing mineralogy of the vein system has involved an increase in tourmaline content from the surface downwards, so that the veins at the lower levels are composed of dark brown quartz-tourmaline. The drilling problem presented by these extremely hard veins was partially alleviated by the development and adoption of a one-inch drill bit. All blast-hole drilling is now done with the one-inch bit, without any difference in hole spacing.

The mineralogy of the feed, concentrates and tailings from the Heath Steele mill in New Brunswick was studied in detail to determine the liberation and recoveries of the major ore minerals, and to characterize the occurrence and distribution of the trace elements. The ore milled during August 1977 contained an average of 4.34 wt % Zn, 1.25 wt % Cu, 1.64 wt % Pb and 90 gr/ton Ag. The main trace elements in the ore are silver, cadmium, indium, cobalt, antimony, bismuth, arsenic, mercury, tin and gold. Silver is carried in solid solution in tetrahedrite-tennantlte, galena, Ag-Sb sulfosalts and Pb-Bi-Sb sulfosalts. Approximately half of the silver is recovered in the lead and copper concentrates and the remainder is lost in the tailings and Zn concentrate. As the major silver-bearing minerals also contain Sb and Bi, recovering silver by ore dressing would involve recovering elements that are troublesome in extraction metallurgy. Cadmium and most of the indium and mercury occur in solid solution in sphalerite and consequently are recovered in the zinc concentrate. Some indium is also recovered in the copper concentrate in a second unidentified indium-bearing mineral. Cobalt and arsenic occur principally in arsenopyrite, cobaltite, a Co-Fe sulfarsenide, pyrite and pyrrhotite, and follow these minerals into the tailings. Recovery of the valuable element cobalt, therefore, would involve recovering the environmentally hazardous element arsenic. Most of the tin and gold report to tailings. The ore was ground to about 80% minus 270 mesh. At this grind, 71 wt % of the sphalerite, 66 wt % of the chalcopyrite and 59 wt % of the galena were liberated. Recoveries of free sphalerite, free chalcopyrite and free galena in the Zn, Cu and Pb concentrates were 85 wt %, 76 wt % and 80 wt %, respectively; recoveries of unliberated sphalerite, unliberated chalcopyrite and unliberated galena in the respective Zn, Cu and Pb concentrates were 48 wt %, 5 wt % and 7 wt %. Some of the unliberated sphalerite and chalcopyrite grains in the tailings are large and would have been liberated at a finer grind.

Pyrrhotite (Po) is widely considered to be the most significant mineral in the self-heating of sulphides. It is therefore desirable to determine the amount of Po in mineral samples. This is commonly accomplished through x-ray diffraction (XRD) or quantitative evaluation of materials by scanning electron microscopy (QEM-SEM). This paper introduces another quantitative method based on Mossbauer analysis that requires limited sample preparation and has the additional potential to detect the sulphur/iron ratio within Po. The technique is explored using pentlandite/pyrrhotite mixtures.

"Seven lithologic units, informally characterized, were recognized in the vicinity of the Montauban orebody. The first five lie in stratigraphic order. From structural bottom to structural top these are: (1) grey composite gneiss; (2) dark grey quartz-biotite gneiss; (3) quartz-biotite-garnet gneiss hosting several calcareous, aluminous and magnesian members and gold mineralization; (4) light grey quartz-muscovite-(sericite)-biotite gneiss; and (5) metabasafts. The last two intrude the sequence: (6) amphibolite dykes and (7) pegmatite veins. The orebody lies on the inverted limb of an overturned synform verging to the west with the metabasafts marking the core of the fold. As the foliation is folded, this fold is attributed to deformation ""D2""; deformation ""DI"" being responsible for the formation of the foliation. A late brittle deformation developed shear zones with probable strike-slip motions. The refined stratigraphy and the identification of the structural position of the orebody provide new tools for regional interpretation and prospecting.RESUMESept unités lithologiques ont été définies informeffement à proximité du gisement de Montauban. Comm e la foliation est plissée, ce pli est considère appartenir d la deformation ""D2""; la deformat ion ""DI"" etant responsable de la formation de lafoliation. Une deformation cassante tardive se traduit par des zones de cisaillement, d rejet apparemment directionnel. Cette stratigraphie plus précisé et l'indentification de la position structurale du gisement fournissent de nouveaux omits de prospection et d'interprétation regionalé."

Historically the hydrogen fluoride laden fume emitted from the electrolytic cells in the aluminium reduction process is further treated in pulse jet dust collectors. These dust collectors act as dry scrubbers performing two duties: adsorbing the gaseous fluoride emitted from the cells onto alumina dust; and collecting the alumina dust minimising particulate and fluoride emissions to the environment.Patented StarBag (TM) technology has been used in aluminium smelters in Australia as a means of increasing the dust collection and fluoride scrubbing capacity of existing collectors. This technology provides an alternative to major capital equipment upgrade where increased capacity is required, and potentially lowers the production cost per tonne of aluminium where capacity limitations are being realised and production expansion is required. This paper presents the findings of on-site pilot scale, and full production scale comparative tests, highlighting the operational and variable differences observed utilising the Star-Bag(TM) technology at Boyne Smelters Ltd in Australia. The results illustrate how this technology can be utilised to increase the hydrogen fluoride scrubbing efficiency and dust collection capacity of existing capital equipment.

Since the beginning of this century Boliden Mineral and Atlas Copco have worked together in stages on improving the accuracy and quality of drilling. Navigation of the drill rigs with IREDES has been in use in the Boliden mines for several years. Recently the capability of the system has extended with map navigation to more accurately follow the ore in cut&fill mines. The system allows for changes on the individual round level to follow the ore without changing the whole design for the heading. Those changes are done in a CAD-system and remove the need for face markings and will allow for even better accuracy in both height and wall position. All the information between the CAD-system and the drill rigs is exchanged using the IREDES standard. This paper describes the workflow and the use of the IREDES standard.

PERUSAL of a list of present-day commercial explosives perhaps does not convey a full realization that there has been a great deal of improvement since the original dynamite was discovered nor that, in recent years, great developments have taken place in specialized explosives. This is true particularly of high-explosives for use in metalliferous mining or what is more commonly termed 'hard-rock' mining. Not many decades ago, only two or three types of explosive were avail-'able for commercial use. One was black blasting powder. Another was ordinary nitro-glycerin dynamite in various strengths. Black blasting powder remains with but very little change. Despite its ancient lineage, it is still with us as perhaps the sole explosive in use today which is almost identical in appearance, physical properties, and working ability or execution co the original. Which dynamite the story is different. Its evolution may be likened to that of the dog, nitro-glycerin as first discovered being the counterpart of the wild dog and, like it, dangerous and hard to control. The original dynamite as made by Nobel might then be considered as representing the first domesticaced species. This original dynamite, however, has been 'crossed with other bloods' until one sees now many distinct 'breeds' in the list. Present-day explosives still have the 'bark' and the 'bite', but with control and research have come many improvements; and types have been created which are specially adapted for particular kinds of work. We still have the direct descendant of Nobel's dynamite in the form of an improved nitro-glycerin dynamite. This C-I-L explosive, Polar Dynamite, is no longer the best type to use in the hunt for gold, silver, iron, and other metals. There have been developed other explosives more suitable for chat work. In Canada, such explosives are accomplishing this work effectively, not only where climatic conditions are moderate but through the rigours of our northern winters, with their sub-zero temperatures.

"The SIDMIN program aims at filling the mineral processor’s need to know the deportment of ‘minerals of interest’ not just ‘elements of interest’ that pass through the processing plants. Generally, chemistry is used as a tool of routine monitoring on site. Mineralogy, which is relatively much slower, is used more as a tool of research and post mortem investigations and these services are usually provided by a distant facility. The SIDMIN program enables site management to receive chemical and quantitative mineralogical reports on their critical samples daily, simultaneously and affordably.The author developed the SIDMIN program at ZCCM Nchanga Division where it continues to be a powerful tool for monitoring the efficiency of operations. Outlines are given of procedures for quick sample preparation and quantification of significant minerals in process samples. A specimen report is presented, which shows the format of reporting the contributions of individual minerals to metal losses at critical stages of the circuit. It is shown that SIDMIN provides timely information to management, about trends and abrupt changes in the quality of ore, and its processing, in a way never achievable by chemical analyses alone. This greatly helps in resolving the age-old problem of ‘bad ore’ or ‘bad operations’ on a day-by-day basis. For example increase in copper mica in the feed indicates excessive ore dilution during mining. Increased loss of free sulphides was traced to insufficient reagent conditioning time at the Concentrator. Persistent losses of leachable oxides at the Tailings Leach Plant were traced to inadequate leach residence time.SIDMIN is affordable because it can be implemented using basic optical microscopes, minimal quantities of micro-chemical reagents and custom trained site staff who demonstrate good colour perception and an ability to follow laid down procedures consistently."

The La Ronge. Kisseynew, Glennie Lake and Flin Flon domains. the main focu for gold exploration in the southeast part of the Saskatchewan Shield, were subject to continental glacial ice advances from the northeast during the Quaternary. Based on forty-four auger hole along with surficial mapping, the general Quaternary stratigraphy in this area is observed to be composed of a lower till unit , an overlying stratified unit of glaciofluvial sand and gravel and/or a glaciolacustrine silt-clay unit. an upper till. and an upper tratified unit. The lower till is commonly found throughout the geological domains except where it has been eroded in glaciofluvial or fluvial channels. Glacial Lake Agassiz fo rmerly covered most of these prospective domains. The lacustrine deposits associated with the lake impede surficial geochemical surveys including soil. lake sediment. and biogeochemical surveys. The approximate extent of clay cover can be predicted from beach elevations. For instance. in the Waddy Lake area. clay i not known to occur above about 1,400 feet (425 m) elevation. Exploration techniques are hampered by clay in at least one third of the volcanic belt. Thi s influence is indicated by the fact that nearly all gold prospect found to date are located above 1,400 feet (425 m) while the area of clay cover is vi rtually unexplored. The upper till i related to a minor ice readvance. This till is the medium often sampled during soil surveys in the area . lts value as a geochemical ampling medium is dependent on the extent of erosional contact with bedrock highs on the lower till. Those areas which are relatively free of lacustrine and fluvial deposits are those where surface geochemical methods work best. In the Waddy Lake volcanic belt approximately 25-50% of the area may be suitable for surficial surveys. The area of the Star Lake prospect occurs above the 1,500 foot (460 m) elevation and was not covered by Lake Agas iz. The effectivene of till sampling as a surface sampling medium was tested in those areas above the clay level. Till orientat ion surveys were carried out at the Star Lake property and the Tower Lake prospect (Waddy Lake area) within the La Ronge Domain . Gold grain counts and analy es of heavy mineral concent rate from 7 kg surface ti ll samples were used to delineate dispersion trains down-ice from mineralization. In addition, the clay fraction and a 30 g (-80 mesh) subsample from the same till sample, were analyzed for gold . "The Central Mukur deposit was discovered by the Semipalatinsk Geological Exploration Expedition (GEE) during detailed searches from 1977 to 1980. Andas Altyn Ltd., a Kazakhstanian gold mining company acquired the property and commenced mining in 1995. In 1998, Andas-Altyn Ltd. became a wholly owned subsidiary of Eurasia Gold Corporation.The Central Mukur gold project covers a linear series of parallel, discontinuous zones of near surface oxide gold mineralization that covers a distance of 7 kilometers and extends past the property boundaries. The oxide gold mineralization is a result of the regional oxidization of a primary sulfide gold mineralization emplaced in a series of shallow dipping thrust faults. Resources as calculated by the GEE are 3.45 mt at an average grade of 1.84 gmt Au in the C1 +C2 category and 7.52 mt at an average grade of 1.80 gmt Au in the P1 category. The Central Mukur Gold Heap Leach Mine consists of an open pit, heap leach pads, and an ion exchange resin gold recovery plant. Limited gold production (<2,500 ounces/year) has been achieved over the past three years leaching run of mine oxide gold mineralization. Gold recovery utiling cyanide to dissolve the Au and ionic resin technology to recover the Au for the leachate is approximately 60%. Loaded resin is shipped to a treatment plant at Almaty where the gold is stripped from the resin, refined and sold.This paper will describe the geology, mining, and processing of the Central Mukur ore. In addition, it will describe what it is like doing business in Kazakhstan and the transition from a Soviet style operation to a more western style operation.INTRODUCTIONThe Central Mukur Mine is owned and operated by Andas-Altyn Ltd. a Kazakhstanian gold mining company located in northeast Kazakhstan. Andas-Altyn is a wholly owned subsidiary of Eurasia Gold Corp., a Canadian public company listed on the Alberta Stock Exchange. The Central Mukur mine consists of a small open pit, and a heap leach operation that utilizes ion exchange resin to recover gold from pregnant solutions. In addition to the Central Mukur mine, Eurasia also owns the Myaly heap leach gold project which is also operated by Andas- Altyn Ltd."

"The Compound Water Cyclone is a concentrator for the wet processing, in bulk, of finely divided materials such as slack coal, fine ores and mineral sands. It was originally developed by the Fuels and Mining Practice Division of the Mines Branch, Department of Mmes and Technical Surveys, Ottawa, for the cleaning of friable slack coals and slurries.Since its introduction in the coal industry in 1962, its application to other materials has also been studied, with special emphasis on simplicity of operation and low over-all cost per ton of finished product .In this paper, a description is given of commercial two-stage units presently available for the processing of granular materials, including wastes a1:1d other low-grade products. A pneumatic control system is used for operating the cyclone under back pressure .and for automatic cut-point adjustment. An account is given of results obtained on coal mineral sands and ores in the Wes tern Regional Laboratory of the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys. Results of several industrial applications are discussed."

"The data that many mineral processing plants make use of, is provided by samples taken from sampling systems which are inadequately designed or improperly maintained, and therefore cause detrimental effects to plant operations, production planning and metallurgical accounting! Poorly designed or maintained sampling systems will likely produce low probability samples which give the operator a false sense of security of the product and the process. If data is the basis for action (Flintoff, 1992, p.2), then using the resulting suspect or bad assays by operators, control systems, or metallurgist and administration personnel will act and make decisions which may adversely affect the profitability of a processing plant. Here we will discuss some of the fundamental sampling problems, propagation of errors and a method to estimate what impact this has on an operations Net Smelter Return.INTRODUCTIONIn order to control a mineral processing plant at its best potential, it is necessary to obtain the best possible measurement results of the metal or mineral in question. The sample which is delivered to a measuring instrument, or lab, needs to be of the highest probability to be able to achieve this. This paper will discuss the effects of sampling errors on grade / recovery and grade / Net Smelter Return (NSR) and provide a method to estimate the monetary advantages of using probabilistic sampling in a processing plant.REVIEW OF SAMPLINGSampling, by definition, is the removal of a small representative portion from a total consignment, or flow, for the purpose of accounting or process control.• A sample can only be considered representative, if each and every increment collected, in each of the sampling stages, is representative.• Each particle of the sampling lot must have the same probability of being included in the final sample.• If both of the above conditions are met, then the final sample will be representative of the complete sampling lot.It is commonly known that in order to take truly representative and probabilistic sample, best practices indicate that:• The total stream should be sampled.• The sample cutter should intersect the sample at right angles to the flow.• The sample cutter should travel through the stream at a linear and constant speed and the speed deviations should be less than 5%."

The ISO TC 226 (Materials for the production of primary aluminium) has presently issued more than one hundred standards on the materials: alumina, pitch, petroleum coke, carbon anodes, carbon cathodes, ramming paste, fluorides and refractory). The object of the standardization work is to find methods that both material producers and smelters will accept. Methods that are specific for the operational conditions have been developed in addition to more traditional room temperature methods. Examples of important properties under operational conditions are: Air and C02 reactivity of anodes, Equivalent temperature for baked anodes, Sodium expansion of cathode blocks, Shrinkage and Rammability of paste, Penetration of electrolyte into refractories.
