Conventional methods of underground surveying use theodolites/total stations and 3D laser scanners to obtain information about the underground environment. Current methods of geo-referencing these instruments to a mine reference system include triangulation, trilateration and resection. However, despite technological advancements, surveying procedures have remained slow, laborious and relatively unchanged during the last half-century. Recent innovations in the robotics community have shown that automated mapping of underground mining tunnels can be undertaken using 2D/3D laser scanners. These techniques have the potential to, in turn, improve upon current underground surveying and mapping methods. Automating surveying and mapping using current surveying tools without changing the setting up procedures or removing current constraints, or even changing the type of equipment used, does not change the status quo. The problem of moving from a static, tripod based surveying and mapping system to an unconstrained mobile surveying and mapping system is the subject of this paper. A current challenge for automated mapping is the ability to automatically geo-reference a mobile mapping system to a mine reference system. For a mobile mapping system that uses a horizontally mounted 2D laser scanner to gather data of the underground environment, the challenge of determining its position and orientation within the mine environment is magnified even more. This paper introduces Mobile Automated Scanner Triangulateration (MAST), a technique under development at Queen?s that is designed to geo-reference a mobile mapping system to a mine reference system for the purposes of underground mine surveying. MAST quickly and automatically determines scanner 2D position and orientation (azimuth) in a mine reference frame by using minimal human input.

From 1999 to 2008 rock related accidents accounted for 75 fatalities, nearly 6,000 injuries and almost 14,000 incidents (Pappas and Mark, 2011). Clearly this shows that rock related safety on coal mines remains a serious issue and more effort is needed to address this hazard. This paper reviews support design considerations and monitoring needed to improve rock related safety in room and pillar coal mines in the USA. From the present study design considerations continue to evolve and improvements in technology and a better understanding of failure mechanisms and methods to prevent these failures from occurring are in place. At first glance, the design of safe and efficient underground openings appears simple until the designer begins to realize the complexities and variability of geometries, geology, loading and stress influences, support designs and other factors such as corrosion and economics. Ultimately the goal of all designs is to ensure that it can be completed safely, last for the duration of the design life and it is economically feasible.

"The beneficiation and upgrading of pyrochlore from its ores is carried out through flotation. In industrial practice, upgrading is conducted in a two-stage flotation process in which pyrochlore flotation is carried out after gangue mineral pre-flotation (carbonate, silicate, sulphide or phosphate reverse flotation). In this study, the flotation of pyrochlore from a low grade carbonatite ore was performed at the laboratory scale following a two-stage flotation process in which carbonate minerals were floated in advance of niobium minerals. In parallel, a simplified flotation process was developed in which pyrochlore was floated directly from gangue minerals at increasingly acidic pH. Laboratory results indicated that both two-stage and direct flotation provided similar results in terms of niobium grade-recovery. Based on these results, a large scale, integrated pilot plant was conducted using a direct flotation flowsheet. While the elimination of reverse gangue flotation resulted in flowsheet simplification, the dissolution of carbonate minerals and the subsequent effect of dissolved cations on the floatability of pyrochlore added an element of complexity. A comparison of results from locked-cycle laboratory testing and pilot plant testing highlights the challenges of scaling up a complex flowsheet. A case is made for the direct flotation process and the key parameters to achieving success in large scale direct flotation of pyrochlore are discussed.INTRODUCTIONPyrochlore (Ca,Na)2Nb2O6(OH,F) is a niobium bearing mineral which has been the primary global source of niobium since the first pyrochlore mine commenced operations in the late 1960s (Gibson et al., 2015a). In the past years the enormous weight saving potential of magnesium sheet has been demonstrated by various research projects all over the world. It has been shown magnesium flat products can benefit automotive, aviation, machine tool and consumer electronics industries. Major material problems such as poor formability, corrosion resistance and high production cost still inhibit the application of magnesium sheets in large scale production. The present contribution outlines achievements in casting and rolling technology. The authors developed an adapted strip casting process in which near-net-shape rolling feedstock of several wrought alloys has been produced. During the rolling process, various parameters were varied in order to modify the microstructure and surface quality of sheet. Several temperature cycles, strains, lubricants, roll surface structures and roll coatings have been analyzed. The sheets were examined and tested in deep-drawing experiments. Suitable rolling schedules have been developed for standard and modified wrought alloys. The study concludes with an overview of current industrial solutions and an estimation of the potential cost savings that might result from the adaptation of the process that has been developed.

"While various methods are available to estimate a mining project's value, value is only established through a transaction. Comparable methods allow the value estimated for a mining project to be benchmarked against mining project values established in the market. Comparable methods thus are a key tool for ensuring value estimates are congruent with what the market would actually pay. For example, if the value estimated for a mining project using discounted cash flow analysis differs significantly from the value implied using comparable market methods, the valuator may be using metal price or discount rate assumptions that differ significantly from those the market is currently willing to pay for.The paper provides an overview of market comparable valuation approaches, and discusses some of the difficulties and limitations that arise in using these approaches. The types of market values that are typically utilised are discussed, including asset sale prices, share prices (market capitalisations), and values established in corporate mergers and acquisitions. Topics discussed include methods used in estimating a mining project's value based on the market value of the company that holds the asset, and limitations that arise because of unique features of mining projects and of companies that hold them.It is concluded that market comparable and fundamental (e.g. NPV) approaches to project valuation should not be viewed as alternative approaches to estimating project value, but rather can and should be integrated to derive a single value estimate based on both market andfandamental data. A method for integrating these approaches is discussed, and illustrated by example."

It is well known that the refinement of grain size in metals leads to a significant improvement in important mechanical properties. As part of a European collaborative project, processing schedules have been investigated aimed at producing a homogeneous ultra-fine ferrite and spheroidised carbide aggregate microstructure structure in high carbon (CMn) steels (0.6-1.2wt%C), via conventional 'warm' rolling and innovative Equal Channel Angular Extrusion (ECAE). Suitable deformation schedules were determined from dilatometry and thermo-mechanical Gleeble simulations. Evidence of an ultra-fine ferrite and carbide aggregate microstructure following 'warm' rolling is given. A significant improvement in tensile strength, particularly proof stress (0.2%) was also noted in comparison to material deformed at higher temperatures. Concurrent Equal Channel Angular Extrusion (ECAE) experiments investigated microstructural evolution with incremental strain. Extensive analysis was carried out using various techniques, including high resolution Electron Back Scattered Diffraction (EBSD). Evidence of ferrite grain refinement was noted in a eutectoid composition steel. A sub-micron ferrite structure was observed following high strains (E-3.33) and the mechanical properties exhibit a marked increase in tensile strength.

Using batch reactors equipped with CO and CO2 gas sensor, CO oxidation over Au catalysts in room air has been investigated and compared with Pt catalysts. For both Au and Pt catalysts, the logarithm plot of CO concentration data during initial 10 min are well fitted by straight line, which mean the first order dependence on the CO concentration between 10 and 10,000ppm. The rate constant value (k) over Au and Pt catalyst generally decrease with increasing initial CO concentration above 100ppm. The value decrease especially rapidly between 100ppm and 1,000ppm over Pt catalysts, which should be due to the strong adsorption of CO on Pt. The k value over Au catalyst has become ten times or more as large as the Pt catalysts at 1,000ppm. Already for the initial concentration of 100ppm CO, the strongly adsorbed CO on Pt metal has been clearly observed by FT-IR during the reaction over Pt/Al2O3. A part of the strongly adsorbed CO has been remained on Pt after the disappearance of gas phase CO, and has gradually changed to gas phase CO2. Such strongly adsorbed species on Au has never been observed on Au/TiO2 under the same reaction conditions. These features of Au catalysts are favorable for indoor air purification.

"In order to determine the in-situ shear strength of rock joints, large scale testing is required. However, this is both expensive and difficult to execute. One possible method to overcome this may be to use photogrammetry to capture large joint surface roughness in-situ and downscale it to replica samples, which could be sheared in laboratory. In this paper, as a first part in such a method, a technique to digitize surface roughness and to produce replica samples for laboratory shear testing from a larger joint sample are presented. First, a thin granitic rock slice with dimensions of 1.75 m x 0.95 m of granitic intact rock was chosen for the study. The joint surface is fresh and created through tensile induced splitting. The large joint sample is digitized using photogrammetry. Then, one fullscale 1.7 m x 0.6 m geometry is cropped from the digitized joint geometry and then subsamples at 10x, 7.5x, 5x, 2.5x and 1x scales. All sub-geometries are scaled down digitally to produce 0.17 m by 0.06 m geometries. The geometries are used to make casting molds both positive and negative to produce samples with perfect matedness. The casting molds are 3D printed in polylactic acid plastic and C60/75 concrete is cast to produce a replica series. In addition to the creation of this replica series, two pilot replicas are also tested using a portable shear box with a 0.5 MPa normal pressure. The results from the pilot rounds are presented and discussed. Finally, suggestions for future research are given.INTRODUCTIONThe rock mass strength is in many cases controlled by the shear strength of rock joints, especially in hard rock masses. The shear strength is generally found to be influenced by several parameters, including normal stress, the basic friction angle of the intact rock, the joint surface roughness, the joint wall compressive strength, the matedness of the joint surfaces, weathering and infilling. The effect of these parameters for the joint shear strength can be evaluated in laboratory scale. However, the shear strength is known to be scale dependent. How the scale effect influences the strength is not fully understood. The general consensus is that the shear strength decreases when sample size increases, i.e. a negative scale effect (Bandis et al. 1981). However, some studies have presented contradictory results, see for example Hencher et al. (1993) and Kutter & Otto (1990). The extent and nature of the scale effect is still a question of debate (Tatone & Grasselli 2013)."

"The 1980s have proven extremely difficult years for many resource-based organizations. Mining companies have learned how to weather the negative effects of inevitable economic cycles. However, with some notable exceptions, such as gold mining companies, the mining industry has faced a broader and deeper round of cutbacks than any experienced since the 1930s. Downsizing has been a major issue for many mining companies as they have faced the need for dramatic staffing cost reductions in the recent past.The continuing current rapid rate of change in technology and the marketplace, coupled with increasing merger and acquisition activity, will provide an on-going need for some companies to face major reorganization. This inevitably will involve down-sizing activity in some instances.Given this scenario, it is worth reviewing the industry's past experiences to identify approaches and techniques that could prove of value in handling a future staff downsizing challenge. This paper is based upon a downsizing consultant's experiences with the mining industry and other sectors, and highlights what appear to be key staff reduction planning and process issues.Planning for DownsizingA review of companies' downsizing activities of the last few years reveals four key activity stages which need to be addressed to ensure a successful transition. These stages are:1. organization planning;2. developing cost reduction strategies;3. implementing downsizing; and4. building for the future.A business situation that is severe enough to require drastic staff cuts typically affects all aspects of a company's operations. Most mining companies have reviewed cost efficiencies in many operational areas. However, these reviews often have been short term in focus . As a result, some companies have experienced multiple downsizing; each event a response to an immediate economic threat. This has sometimes resulted in an unstable organizational environment, with severe stresses on staff morale and productivity.In the long term it is more efficient and less stressful to the organization to adopt a more comprehensive and longer-term strategy. Especially in capital intensive mining operations, it makes sense to review all areas of business activity, not just staffing."

Separation of a magnetic fraction from nickel concentrate following matte flotation, and its treatment in a separate circuit enable reduces precious metals losses. The magnetic fraction is treated in two stages of oxidative leaching: atmospheric and pressure leaching. A study of the atmospheric stage, using mathematical modelling, is described in this paper. The mathematical model and experimental data were used to carry out industrial process calculations. The model enabled extrapolation of the results of batch laboratory test to industrial-scale continuous processing and the selection of optimal process conditions and large-scale equipment. In December 2004, commercial oxidative leaching tests were performed on the magnetic fraction at the Severonickel Plant (Monchegorsk, Russia). A comparative analysis of the mathematical modelling results and the actual process parameters is presented.

The paper will outline the destructive test methods and test procedures including the evaluation criteria currently used at the Materials Testing Laboratory (MTL), Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, a laboratory approved by the Ontario Minister of Labour for the purpose of testing or examining mine shaft ropes or other hoisting appliances. For the evaluation of the mechanical properties of rope samples used in "ultra-deep" single-lift shafts, additional discard criteria used in Ontario, Quebec and South Africa shall be presented. Most of the methods and test procedures currently used at MTL can also be found in the current CSA G4-00 Standard, Steel Wire Rope for General Purpose and for Mine Hoisting and Mine Haulage, published in November 2000. In this latest or sixth edition of CSA Standard G4-00, a new Clause 14 has been added outlining the requirements for in-service destructive testing of steel wire ropes for mine hoisting applications. The CSA G4-00 Standard is also intended for the manufacturing of new ropes, and includes requirements for raw materials and construction features for round strand and flattened strand rope, and locked coil rope in bright and galvanized finish. To-date the Ontario Mining Regulations require only that destructive test of new ropes be performed in accordance with CSA Standard G4-00, but does not require conformity to the Standard, and on the other hand the inservice wire ropes are required to be tested in accordance with CSA G4 and thus require conformity. The author recommends that the Ontario Mining Regulations (and regulations of other mining jurisdictions) be improved in order to ensure quality control in the manufacturing of wire ropes destined for mines in Ontario (and Canada). Also, the author recommends the revision of the CSA G4-00 Standard by the technical committee in order to address manufacturer?s concerns with respect to compliance, and harmonize the Standard with Internationally recognized Standards.

"This paper outlines the implementation of the Mechanic's Stethoscope from the earliest stages of development to the implementation at Brunswick Mining and Smelting. It details the cooperative efforts of personnel at Noranda Technology Centre (NTC) and Brunswick Mining & Smelting (BMS) during the technology transfer of the Mechanic's Stethoscope. It demonstrates how everyone worked toward a goal of developing a product that is accepted as a useful addition to the work environment.The Mechanic's Stethoscope is an underground vehicle diagnostic system consisting of computer hardware and software intended to assist mechanics in daily tasks. Its tools facilitate quick and easy access to any information required during the maintenance of an underground vehicle. Each tool presents vehicle condition data in a simplified manner. The additional information improves the mechanics understanding of the vehicle condition. The result is a healthier fleet of vehicles and faster diagnosis times.When introducing a computer based system into a traditionally non-computer oriented environment a concern is the acceptance of the system. This concern exists on many levels."

An equilibrium calculational computer program (STABCAL) can be used for titration simulation. The program can handle various forms of titrants: solid, aqueous, gaseous or another solution, and various type of reactions: reductive, oxidative and adsorption. Background chemistry, mathematical considerations, and program development will be illustrated. Also, simple titration applications such as how to determine the acidity of aqueous solutions and alkaline sulfide leaching of gold are presented. Processing of an acid mine water from the Berkeley Pit in Butte, Montana has been used for illustration purposes. The treatment studies included: cementation, sulfidization, and neutralization. LOCATION OF PROPERTY THE property of Caribou Gold Mines, Limited, is situated in the north-eastern part of Halifax county, seven miles south of the Canadian National railway line at Upper Musquodoboit. Approach to the village is by a secondary road, improved recently by waste rock from the mine dump. A two-wire telephone line, seven miles long, built and owned by the present operators, provides communication to the nearest telephone exchange, Parker's Corner. HISTORY In 1870, the Caribou area was recognized as a proclaimed gold district. From then on, operations were intermittent, with periods of considerable activity by small companies until there were no fewer than seven mines in a district two miles long by three-quarters of a mile wide. These were the Holman, Truro, Caffrey, MacDonald or Elk, Lake, Dixon, and Hilchey properties, all of which have had separate stamp-mills, and have produced gold for varying periods. Depths of the workings range from 100 feet to 1,000 feet. Power was generated at each property by means of steam boilers. At the present time, the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, controls all the leased areas, approximately 800 acres, and is operating by means of one central vertical shaft. GEOLOGY The district in and about Caribou Mines has an elevation of approximately five hundred feet above sea level. The area is fairly well wooded, with rock outcrops here and there. These outcrops, along with information from test-pits and shafts, have been the basis for the very excellent geological map of the district prepared by E. R. Faribault some years ago. The rock structure, which is one of the best examples in Nova Scotia of an elliptical dome, has its anticlinal axis in a northeast-southwest direction, and flat plunges in the same directions.

The shortage of freshwater has been a major challenge for mineral flotation in arid areas. When using high salinity water, certain electrolytes are detrimental to flotation while others can improve the flotability of minerals. In this paper, the flotation behaviors and contact angles of pyrite in both Milli-Q water and high salinity water were investigated using different collectors at various pH levels. Results show that the thionocarbamate has a less affinity to pyrite in different solutions under mildly alkaline conditions as compared with potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) and N-isopropoxypropyl-N’-ethoxycarbonyl thiourea (iPOPECTU). At high pH levels, the slime coating on pyrite surfaces, which is caused by colloidal precipitates of magnesium and calcium ions in seawater, was confirmed by SEM, EDX and in-situ zeta potential measurement. The slime coating of colloidal precipitates on mineral surfaces led to low recovery of pyrite at high pH levels. The study of flotation behavior of pyrite in high salinity water improves our fundamental understanding of mineral flotation in seawater.

Sedimentation behaviour of siliceous mill tailings derived from a magnetite-chalcopyrite ore in fresh water, fresh water - sea water mixtures and full-salinity sea waters are compared. Results of batch settling tests are presented in the form of settling curves and solids flux curves. The addition of a few per cent of sea water markedly enhanced the zone sedimentation rate due to particle agglomeration caused by a reduction in zeta potential of the suspended solids. The presence of a small amount of residual, previously magnetized magnetite in the tailings also enhanced agglomeration and sedimentation. The significance of these results to submarine disposal of mill tailings is discussed.
