"This paper describes the modifications made to the Fox Mine copper concentrate bin in order to obtain a continuous flow condition. The design of these modifications is based on test results obtained on Fox Mine concentrate using the flow factor testing machine in the research facilities of Cominco at Trail, B.C.The original design consisted of a cylindrical steel bin on a concrete slab with two slot-discharge openings. Based on predictions of the maximum mass flow hopper angle for conical and wedge shaped hoppers for the concentrate on various potential bin lining materials, Ultra-High Molecular Weight (UHMW) Polymer was selected as a liner.Using the recommended angles for conical and wedge shaped hoppers, the profile of the bin base was changed to suit the existing slot openings.The initial method of fastening the liner resulted in failure of the connections. Subsequent modification to the zinc concentrate bin fastener system proved satisfactory and it has now been in operation for over one year without any separation of the lining material.Utilization of flow testing procedures on concentrate samples has demonstrated that proper design of storage bins or hoppers to achieve continuous flow can be incorporated into the design of new plants."

The geotechnical importance of studying fluid flow through porous media and soils in particular, becomes evident when dealing with groundwater movement in surficial geomaterials that can be initiated by hydraulic gradients that develop during construction activity, groundwater extraction, impounding of reservoirs and groundwater recharge during adverse climatic events. In a geotechnical context, rocks are regarded as virtually impermeable materials, with comparatively greater resistance to flow of water through their pore structure. The importance of the permeability of rocks comes to the forefront when deep geologic formations are used in geoenvironmental activities for disposal of hazardous and toxic materials. The permeability of the rocks encountered is of critical importance to these geoenvironmental activities since the movement or transport of the hazardous materials during their eventual release will be largely governed by the permeability characteristics of the geologic formation. The estimation of the permeability characteristic of geologic formations is a non-trivial exercise since the measure of permeability can be influenced by the scale at which the measurement is made. Regional-scale and borehole-scale estimates of the permeability can be greatly influenced by the inhomogeneities, including fractures, fissures, solution channels and other anomalies that are present in naturally occurring geologic media. These anomalies are considered to be site specific and can only be determined in a reliable fashion by either conducting tests at the appropriate scale or in the regional-scale through inverse analysis of tracer movement patterns in rock masses. The estimation of the permeability of intact units of a geologic medium has important geoenvironmental applications in connection with storage of wastes since the units in which repositories will be located should be sparsely fractured and the sealing of the fractures and fissures are a prerequisite to developing an efficient solution for storage. The intact permeability of geomaterials is therefore regarded as an important property that influences efficiency and reliability of geoenvironmental solutions for deep geologic disposal. The permeability of geomaterials such as concrete and cementitious grouts are also important to many geoenvironmental and infrastructure applications where durability of structural materials in general and cements used for sealing deep boreholes and other access shafts employed in waste management endeavours is influenced by the permeability characteristics of these materials

Over thirty plutons in the Chibougamau-Desmaraisville belt were examined briefly in the field and sampled, in addition to the few masses that have been studied in detail. The survey indicates that the intrusions may be conveniently grouped in four main categories, based on their time of intrusion. These are; remobilized basement domes, pre-kinematic intrusions, syn-kinematic intrusions and postkinematic intrusions. Basement domes, as exemplified by the Lappa rent Massif, are composed of migmatized tonalite-diorite gneiss that has undergone at least two periods of mafic dyke intrusion and at least three major deformational periods. The rise of the basement domes was accompanied by extensive mylonitization and the intrusion of syn-tectonic plutons. Pre-kinematic plutons, such the Chibougamau pluton, are diori te-tonalite in composition, and were intruded into the supracrustal pile and partly eroded before the main deformation of the belt. Syn-kinematic plutons occur principally as marginal intrusions bordering the belt (Barlow), or as discrete intrusions along structural highs (La Dauversiere), and are either hornblende monzodiorite or tonalite in composition. Post-kinematic plutons, such as Muscocho, are principally granodiorite and often porphyritic intrusions locally deforming the enclosing rocks. The close relationship between mineralization and high-level intrusions such as the pre-kinematic and some of the post-kinematic plutons is discussed.

Newmont Mining Corporation?s Carlin (?Carlin?) operation processes roaster feed through a double rotator, dry grinding mill following secondary crushing. Metso Process Technology & Innovation (?PTI?) was involved in a review of crushing and dry grinding circuit operations in August 2009. A number of opportunities for increased throughput were identified in the PTI study. Extended plant trials were conducted in July 2010 to provide justification for possible circuit modifications and if needed, additional equipment. The trials confirmed that a finer crusher product would reduce the build-up of material ahead of the coarse grinding chamber in the double-rotator. Also revealed were material transport and airflow restrictions in the dry grinding circuit that resulted in a high circulating load. The secondary crushing plant demonstrated it was capable of reducing the amount of +¾? material in the mill feed thus increasing dry grinding throughput. However, wet and sticky feed affected screening efficiency resulting in low utilisation of the existing crusher capacity. The open circuit configuration also made it difficult to control crushing circuit product size. For the dry grinding circuit, changes in grinding media size, transfer grate design and increased airflow were recommended to reduce circulating load issues and increase circuit capacity. This paper summarises the crushing and grinding circuit review, the extended site trials performed by PTI and the improvements in dry grinding operation that resulted from this study.

Stonegate Agricom Ltd. is currently conducting exploration and development drilling of the Paris Hills Phosphate Project (Paris Hills Project) located in Bear Lake County, southeastern Idaho, 3.2 km west of the towns of Paris and Bloomington, Idaho. The project is located adjacent to a highway and 19 km by paved highway to Montpelier, Idaho where the Union Pacific Railroad system is located. Power and water are available locally. The nearest metropolitan centre is Salt Lake City, Utah approximately 225 km by road to the south-west of the property. The Paris Hills Project encompasses an area of approximately 856 hectares. Property holdings consist of three (3) patented lode mining claims and 16 contiguous fee parcels (some with federal phosphate leases). Active open pit phosphate mining operations are located in surrounding counties in south-east Idaho and are owned and operated by Agrium Inc., Monsanto Company and J.R. Simplot Company. The Paris Hills Project is located near the centre of the Western Phosphate Field which constitutes the most extensive phosphorite beds in the United States. Phosphate beds of the Western Phosphate Field occur within the Phosphoria Formation of Permian age and extend over an area of more than 350,000 km2 including extensive areas of Idaho, Utah, Wyoming and Montana. At Paris Hills the phosphate mineralized beds occur in the overturned limb and the horizontal limb of the Paris Syncline. Grades and thicknesses in both the western overturned limb and the eastern horizontal limb of the anticline are similar. The vast majority of potential mineralization occurs in the horizontal limb which underlies most of the property holdings. Mineralization in the overturned limb has a strike length of over three (3) kilometres and extends from the surface to a depth exceeding 300 m depending on location along the north-trending strike of outcrops. Depths of the horizontal limb range from surface along the north side of Bloomington Canyon to estimated depths of 915 to 1,035 m at Paris Canyon. The property contains an Inferred resource of 109.6 million tonnes at 23.6% P2O5 over two mineralized horizons. The phosphate zones have a strike length of over 3 km and extend from surface to a depth of at least 900 m. Drilling commenced late in the 3rd quarter of 2010 and is planned to continue through 2011. The drilling was planned to target an area of potentially higher grade phosphate mineralization and better define and upgrade the current resources.

The Paracatu Expansion Project III in Brazil was implemented between 2006 and 2008 to increase the existing capacity from 20 to 61 Million tons per year of gold ore treatment. This expansion led the Brazilian subsidiary of the Canadian Kinross Gold Corporation to become the single largest gold producer in Brazil and the largest single gold concentrator in the world, with a nominal capacity to treat around 167,000 tons per day of ore. This paper describes the Project Development areas for the Paracatu Expansion, using the approach proposed by the Project Management Institute (PMI) and the methodology included in the PMBOK (Project Management Book of Knowledge). The author has more than 20 years of experience in the gold mining industry, having worked as a plant metallurgist, mill superintendent and development manager for RPM until he took the position as the Project Manager of the Paracatu Expansion III in 2005. Luis Tondo has a BSc in Mining Engineering from UFRGS-Brazil, an MScEng from the University of Queensland - Australia and an MBA degree from FDC-Brazil. Luis is currently based in Santiago-Chile, acting as the Project Director for developing projects in Latin America for the Kinross Gold Corporation.

"The Mount Milligan Mine, owned by Thompson Creek Metals Company Inc. (TCM), started operations in September of 2013. It is located between the communities of Fort St. James and Mackenzie and is the first major metal mine to open in British Columbia in 15 years. Based on reserves as of January 1, 2014, it has an estimated 22 year mine life with 2.1 billion pounds of copper and 6 million ounces of gold in reserves. Like all commissioning operations, there have been issues achieving design throughput and recovery due to flow sheet design, equipment failures, control philosophy, and reagent scheme. Efforts to improve overall mill performance include equipment modifications, reagent screening and testing, and grind size testing. Applying these changes to the mill and working closely with the mine has resulted in continuous improvement each month as Mount Milligan looks to achieve the nominal design capacity of 60,000 dry metric tonnes per day in the later part of 2015. Considerable focus is being placed into ensuring size reduction equipment is utilized effectively. Additional modifications and tests are being undertaken to steadily improve processes and alleviate restrictions in the mill. This paper will discuss the start-up and present ramp-up history of Mount Milligan, the current mill processes, and the steps taken to achieve expected production numbers.OPERATION BACKGROUNDMount Milligan is an open-pit copper and gold operation wholly owned and operated by Thompson Creek Metals. It is located approximately 155km northwest of Prince George, British Columbia, between the communities of Mackenzie and Fort St. James. The copper-gold porphyry deposit contains a Measured and Indicated Mineral Resource of 706.7 Mt at 0.18% Cu and 0.33 g/t Au, containing 2.84 billion lb. copper and 7.50 million oz. gold. Mine life is currently estimated at 22.1 years (“Feasibility Update – Mt. Milligan,” 2009). The mill is designed to process 60,000 dry metric tonnes per day and produce 400 dry metric tonnes of concentrate per day averaging 25.5% Cu and 40 ppm Au. Concentrate is delivered by truck and trailer to Mackenzie followed by rail to Vancouver for overseas shipping to various customers.Mount Milligan is considered a “zero discharge” operation meaning no process or surface water will be discharged to the environment. As well, stockpiling is very limited and is only permitted for a short period of time. This scenario presents several unique challenges. Scheduling of ore/waste production must be carefully planned as waste rock is used to build the tailings storage facility (TSF). Reagent selection is also important as persistent chemicals will have a tendency to build up in reclaim water which feeds the process water tank."

"Laboratory-scale hydrochloric acid leach tests were conducted on an Elliot Lake uranium ore. Hydrochloric acid leaches without an oxidant or with molecular oxygen (i.e., air or pure oxygen gas) as an oxidant favoured uranium and radium extractions. Conditions for maximum uranium, thorium and radium extractions with hydrochloric acid in the presence of sodium chlorate were determined. The highest extractions of uranium (96%), thorium (81%) and radium (91%) were obtained using a mixture of 44.0 kg HCI and 2.5 kg NaCIOJ per tonne of ore at 75°C with 18 hours ' retention.Flowsheets for two-stage leaching are proposed. The residues obtained from the second-stage leach contain uranium (0.002%), thorium (0.006%) and radium (15 to 20 pCi/g). Tailings of this nature are considered suitable for mine backfill, and, if pyrite is removed, suitable for surface disposal.IntroductionThe nuclear energy industry forecasts an increasing demand for uranium. This increasing demand requires not only largescale mining and processing of conventional and complex uranium ores, but also leads to the consideration of new and nonconventional sources of uranium, e.g., black shales, phosphate rocks, granite, sea water and fossil-fuel ash."

For mine sites affected by acid rock drainage (ARD) or with a potential future ARD issue, the prime consideration is not only the classification of different waste rock as potentially acid forming or non acid forming but also the peak acid (and metal) release rates and expected ARD duration during which effective ARD management and acid neutralisation capacity (ANC) are required. Methods for assessment of this ANC (e.g., Sobek tests) are already available but can be unreliable in ARD containing significant proportions of framboidal pyrite or iron carbonates. The measurement of negative ANC values and the release of S to solution showed that significant sulfide oxidation may occur prior to and during testing in samples containing reactive (particularly framboidal) pyrite resulting in serious underestimation of the original ANC. A simple methodology with dissolution in Ar-purged water before ANC testing, removing ferrous salts, and sulfate assay after ANC testing corrects these effects. Results also showed that a significant lag period (up to 432 h) may be needed for complete hydrolysis of Fe associated with the standard Sobek ANC testing of, for instance, siderite. Hence, the ANC of iron carbonates is usually significantly overestimated. By filtering and the addition of H202 until there was no subsequent pH drop (due to Fe hydrolysis reactions), followed by back titration to pH 7.0, the ANC for siderite was similar to the ANC determined after 432 h lag by the Modified Sobek ANC test and to the mineralogical carbonate ANCcarb determined by calculation based on electron probe micro-analysis. A chemical ANC calculation, based on neutralising cations released to solution, has provided a method to quantify the short-term ANC of carbonates and silicates in simple mixed mineral assemblages and waste rock samples. Results showed that silicate ANC can be more important in short-term neutralisation than carbonate ANC in low carbonate samples. In the longer-term, decreasing sulfate and metal loads with increasing pH values suggests that eventually sulfide acidity generation rates will match the longer-term inherent acid neutralisation rates of the sample derived from silicates. A kinetic ANC measurement for silicates, after steady state dissolution is reached, that indicates the number of hydrogen ions neutralised/m2/yr has been developed. These values can be used in estimates of the net acid production profile from wastes with low (and decreasing) pyrite content after the short-term ANC is exhausted.

"Situated about 200 km southeast of Juneau, Alaska, within the lower Stikine River region of northwestern British Columbia, the Galore Creek porphyry Cu-Au deposits are hosted by Upper Triassic to Lower Jurassic alkaline volcanic rocks and comagmatic syenite intrusions. Early and late breccias are also locally important host rocks for mineralization. Of the twelve identified Cu-Au deposits, the most important are the Central zone, Southwest zone and the Junction deposits with a combined resource of 284 million tonnes at 0.67 % Cu.The composition of the intrusive rocks is predominantly silica-undersaturated, alkaline, and metaluminous. Four intrusive suites are identified from field, petrographic and petrochemical data. Variation within suites or lineages can be explained by alkali feldspar fractionation. An oscillation between porphyritic and equigranular intrusions is suggested by the sequence of different intrusive lineages. The youngest intrusive phase is silica-saturated.A complex succession of intrusive and hydrothermal events is demonstrated at Galore Creek, with the most intense alteration and mineralization developing early in its history. In the Central zone, early Ca-K-silicate alteration, dominated by garnet, biotite, Kfeldspar, and anhydrite grades outward into K-silicate alteration. Both are locally overprinted by retrograde sericite± anhydrite± carbonate (SAC) alteration. The most intense Ca-K-si/icate alteration, a magmatic-hydrothermal breccia, and an early syenite intrusion are all coincident with copper mineralization in the core region of the Central zone. However, higher grade mineralization in the zone, exceeding 1 % Cu with more than 0.5 g/ t Au, is typically associated with intense biotite-rich, K-silicate alteration primarily hosted by altered volcanic rocks. The highest gold grades, commonly exceeding 1 g/t, are associated with bornite-rich mineralization situated in the northern and southern parts of the Central zone.Mineralization in the Southwest zone occurs as disseminated chalcopyrite within a late, diatreme breccia and adjacent K-feldspar porphyry. In the other satellite deposits, disseminated chalcopyrite and bornite occur in volcanic rocks with alteration that is similar to the Central zone."

"In the current work, factors influencing the corrosion mechanisms of TiC and Ti(C,N) based cermets are reviewed. Cermets were typically prepared with 30 vol.% of metal binder, in the form of various in-situ reaction-formed Ni3Al alloys. Commercial WC-Co hardmetals were also examined as baseline materials. The assessment of corrosion involved a variety of electrochemical measurements, including open circuit potential and potentiodynamic polarisation. The corrosion potential and current density were determined, following Tafel extrapolation, allowing estimation of the corrosion rates. Post-corrosion characterisation involved scanning electron microscopy analysis and associated energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy of the sample surfaces. It is demonstrated that the primary corrosion mechanism for this type of cermet is dissolution of the metallic phase during oxidation attack, and thus this response can be expected to increase with the amount of binder in the cermet, although degradation can be subtly affected by composition (i.e. alloy composition, C:N ratio, impurities in the ceramic phase, etc.) and test procedure (i.e. aerated vs. de-aerated electrolytes). It was observed that addition of N content into the ceramic phase is beneficial to the corrosion characteristics of TiC based cermets, through significant refinement in the grain size of the hard phase. Similarly, elimination of impurities, such as W in selected TiC powders, also improves the corrosion resistance.INTRODUCTION Cermets are prepared using the combination of a hard, high elastic modulus ceramic phase with a ductile, high toughness metallic binder. This pairing of hard and ductile components ensures wide application of cermets in demanding wear environments. These materials are consequently used industrially in both bulk and coating form. The most common example of such a composite system is based on the use of tungsten carbide with a cobalt-based binder (WC-Co), which has been widely examined over the past 80 years. However, while WC-Co has been shown to exhibit an excellent combination of high strength and wear resistance, the corrosion and high temperature properties of this material are relatively poor. In addition, WC-Co possesses a high density (~13–14 g/cm3), which makes it a less desirable option when the component mass is a design factor (i.e. use in aerospace). In particular, the aqueous corrosion response of WC-Co limits its use in wear environments where combined corrosive degradation may occur (i.e. tribo-corrosion scenarios). Alternate cermet systems are therefore being actively developed due to these performance limitations."

THIS paper was prompted by a persistent demand for what information we have that will throw light on the oil and gas possibilities of the Maritime Provinces. The problems involved were made familiar to the writer during three seasons of field work in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The reasons for renewed interest are: (1) In many parts of that region, the surface is underlain by a thick series of unaltered sedimentary rocks. (2) Oil seepages occur, and oil in commercial quantity has been exploited' near Moncton, New Brunswick, for many years. (3) In recent years, a new method of attack has been developed toward the finding of stratigraphic traps. This method is based on a detailed study of the geological history of the region, as revealed in surface outcrops and samples from deep wells. The well samples show the lateral variation of strata, far from any possible surface outcrop of the same beds. Sufficient work has now been done in the Maritime Provinces to reveal the broad features of the geological history and the character and distribution of the various rock formations. Comparatively little deep drilling has been done in this region, but the holes are widely scattered and the samples from them have added much to the information obtained from the numerous outcrops of bed-rock. The following discussion gives a summary of available information that has a bearing on the subject.

"The mineralogical characteristics of the process streams provide key indicators to the potential improvement in the metallurgical performance. Therefore, the process mineralogy and diagnostic metallurgy have been widely used as a tool to assist the metallurgists at the operating plants. The challenge of this study was then how to characterize the diagnostic flowsheet of the minerals of interest in the process streams across the flotation circuit. The investigation from this study indicates that the minerals chematic flowsheet can visibly demonstrate the sources that caused the gold losses during the mineral processing.In this paper, we present studies of the flotation process stream samples, representing the feeds, intermediate products, final concentrate and final tails, which were produced from the flotation concentrators of Mt Carlton mine in Queensland, Australia. This study was focused on characterizing the process streams and learns how the gold in the process streams was associated with other sulphide minerals and host minerals on a size by size basis. The automatic QEMSCAN/MLA Particle Mineral Analysis (PMA) and Trace Mineral Search (TMS) were applied to identify the minerals and to detect the gold in the sized fractions of process streams. The Laser Ablation ICP-MS (LA) spot analysis, QEMSCAN EDS spot analysis and electron microprobe spot analysis were employed to identify and quantify there fractory gold concentrations in the sulphide minerals, like pyrite, and the elemental concentrations of visible gold grains. The diagnostic flowsheet of gold recoveries by the process streams, by mineral association classes and by the particle sizes were generated and discussed."

"The Key Lake mill has operated since the fall of 1983. The ore from both Key Lake open pits will be depleted by 1997. It is planned to use this mill, located about 60 km southwest of McArthur, to process the McArthur River ore.While the geological data collected so far on the McArthur deposit are encouraging, more information of the deposit is needed before any detailed mine planning can begin.The surface drilling program identified the orebody and provided information on the geomechanical and hydrological properties of the overlying sandstone. It was proposed to conduct an underground exploration program to further delineate the orebody. This was air proved following a public hearing and review process. This program involves the sinking of a 630 metre deep shaft and the driving of one or two drifts along a portion of the orebody. From these drifts, exploration drilling every 10 m to 15 m through the orebody will provide the information required for the preparation of a feasibility study and an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)."

Introduction Gold holds an important place among the mineral products of Manitoba. In value, it ranks second only to copper, which in 1931 attained first place. The gold production increased from 23,189 fine ounces in 1930 to 102,969fine ounces in 1931. The production for 1930, worth $479,359, came almost entirely from the Central Manitoba mine. The production for 1931 was worth $2,128,558, of which $1,509,018 came from the Flin Flon mine, $528,951 from the Central Manitoba, and $83,497 from the Sherritt Gordon. The Gem Lake mine and some prospects produced $7,785. The total output of gold in Manitoba, from the first recorded production in 1917 to the end of 1931, is estimated at 178,669 fine ounces, valued at $3,693,332. The production for 1932 promises to reach a new high record, due chiefly to the stepping-up of tonnage at the Flin Flon plants and the coming into production of the San Antonio mill in May. History The Manitoba Act, constituting Manitoba a Province of the Dominion, was passed in 1870 and provided for the vesting in the Crown of all un-granted or waste lands of Manitoba, as well as for the administration of these lands by the Dominion of Canada for the purposes of the Dominion "subject to, and except and so far as the same may be affected by, the conditions and stipulations contained in the agreement for the surrender of Rupert's Land by the Hudson's Bay Company to the Crown". Included in these waste lands were large areas later prospected and staked out as mineral lands. Up to the year 1912, that vast territory extending from the 12th base line to the 60th parallel of latitude, and from the Saskatchewan boundary to Hudson bay, was part of the District of Keewatin. Although added to Manitoba in 1912, the administration of its mineral lands also remained vested in the Dominion, so that all mineral lands within the Province upon which deposits of gold ore have been found were disposed of and administered by the Mineral Lands Division, Department of the Interior, until the transfer of the natural resources to the Province of Manitoba, on July 15th, 1930.

"Off-line optimization studies are often necessary to improve the efficiency of grinding circuits. These studies are primarily based on the mathematical modelling of processing units (e.g., ball mills and hydrocyclones) and computer simulations. To complete an optimization task, process engineers must possess skills and knowledge of different subtasks involved in such efforts, e.g., plant audit, laboratory tests, and data analysis. Such know-how can be in part provided by Knowledge-Based Systems (KBSs). One such system, being developed in C Language Integrated Production System (CLIPS), is presented here, with focus on the estimation of ball mill selection functions for the purpose of both diagnostic and simulation, and its use for the optimization of ball size. Some of the interpretation and diagnostic rules will be presented, as well as grinding kinetics and classification data likely to fire them.IntroductionSince the late eighties there has been a growing trend in applying Knowledge-Based Systems (KBSs) to mineral processing [Meech 1990, Bearman and Milne 1992). Table l lists some KBS (often referred to as expert systems) applications that have been used mainly as tools for improving on-line monitoring and control of grinding circuits. However, there has been fewer attempts to add the symbolic processing powers of KBSs to conventional off-line grinding simulators. Figure 1 shows a relatively standard procedure to perform an off-line optimization study [Napier-Munn and Lynch 1992]. In brief, a typical program includes taking representative samples from a number of streams, running laboratory tests on collected samples, estimating model parameters which describe physical processing units (e.g. ball mills and hydrocyclones) validating model predictions and using models for simulation trials. One inevitably needs to be familiar with concepts of process modelling and simulation as well as various computer programs to be able to complete all steps of the study. Much of this ""expertise"" can be captured by KBSs, given their inherent capabilities for symbolic knowledge representation and manipulation."

"This paper presents the mixed spectral behaviour of iron ores from deposits in Gua, India. Spectral signatures of powder samples and their two-component mixtures were generated by spectro - radiometry. Spectra were divided into continuum and absorption components. A modified Gaussian model was used to extract subtle features from the absorption components of the spectra. A linear unmixing model (LUM) applied to estimate minerals from the spectra of mixed powder samples indicated that this model achieved an R2 value of 0.88. The LUM was then applied to estimate the abundance of ores from a hyperspectral satellite image of the deposit area.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article montre le comportement spectral mixte de minerais de fer de gisements à Gua, en Inde. Les signatures spectrales d’échantillons de poudres et leurs mélanges à deux composantes ont été générés par spectroradiométrie. Les spectres ont été divisés en composantes de continuum et d’absorption. Un modèle gaussien modifié a été utilisé pour extraire des caractéristiques subtiles des composantes d’absorption des spectres. THE preparation of this paper is in response to many requests for in-formation on the mining and smelting developments which have been carried on for the past three years or more by the Chromium Mining and Smelting Corporation of Canada. By way of introduction, the following paragraphs, relating to the early history and present status of the chrome-mining industry in the United States, are of interest. They are quoted from Bulletin No. 76 of the California State Mining Bureau, published in August, 1918: 'Chromium was discovered about 1797 by a French chemist, Louis Nicolaus Vauquelin, in ore from Siberia. From that time until 1827, the Urals, in the region of Ekaterinburg, supplied the chromium used in . Europe. In the summer of 1827, as the historian advises us, Isaac Tyson, Jr., saw in a Baltimore market-place a cart containing a cider barrel, which was held from rolling about by some heavy black stones. He had made a study of such stones at the first-known American locality, the Bare hills near his father's home, six miles from Baltimore, and he recognized the black stones as chromite. On inquiry, he found the chromite came from the Reed farm in Harford county, 27 miles northeast of Baltimore. At this time, Tyson was one of the very few men in the country who knew the value of chromite, and in the next few years he took full advantage of this knowledge. He immediately bought the Reed farm. He found about 30 tons of float-ore on the surface, but there was no outcrop of ore in place. Never-theless, he sank a shaft, and at a depth of eight feet struck an ore-pocket which proved to be 80 ft. long, 25 ft. wide, and 8 ft. in maximum thickness. His next discovery was of placer chromite in the sands in the beds of brooks on an estate called Soldiers' Delight, 16 miles northwest of Baltimore. Thus far, Tyson's observations had shown him that chromite occurred apparently only in serpentine areas. His explorations were now leading him farther afield. In 1828, he found on the Wood Farm, in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, a deposit of float chromite which led him to lease the ore-right of the farm, which he finally purChased in 1832. Here he developed the famous Wood mine, the largest single producer of chromite in the world.

"The Williams Gold Mine is located in the Hemlo camp of Northwestern Ontario and is one of Canada’s largest gold producers with annual gold production of 400,000 ounces. The operation is owned and operated as a 50:50 joint venture between Teck Cominco Limited and Barrick Gold Corporation.In July 2002, the decision was made to introduce paste backfill produced from mill tailings as the primary backfilling method in the mine and to decommission the existing cemented rock fill system. This required a fast track design to be completed for both a surface paste backfill plant and an underground paste distribution system followed by an intensive construction phase through the fall and winter of 2002/2003. The paste system was commissioned on schedule in late April 2003 and was in full production within 4 weeks of the initial start up. Overall, the project duration was only 42 weeks from initial project release to commissioning and it was completed $2 million under the budget of $14 million.This paper presents an overview of the lab testwork and process flowsheet design, process control methodology and describes the construction and commissioning phases of the project. Preliminary paste plant performance and operating cost data is also presented.IntroductionThe Williams Gold Mine is located in Northwestern Ontario adjacent to the Trans Canada Highway in the Hemlo Gold Camp as shown in figure 1. The mine currently produces approximately 400,000 ounces of gold annually and is owned and operated as a 50:50 joint venture between Teck Cominco and Barrick.The deposit was discovered as part of the Hemlo gold discovery in 1981 which led to the development of three mining operations within a 2 kilometre radius. The neighboring operations are the Golden Giant Mine, currently owned and operated by Newmont Gold, and the David Bell Mine, currently owned and operated by the same joint venture which is running Williams. David Bell ore is blended and milled in the Williams concentrator."

The ISA PROCESSTM cathode plate is characterised by its copper coated suspension bar, coupled with a blade employing austenitic stainless steel alloy 316L. The blade material has become the mainstay of the technology and has been closely copied by competing cathode designs. Improvement to the cathode plate design remains a key area for research, and ongoing developments by Xstrata Technology's ISA PROCESSTM have recently been commercialised. Two such developments are the ISA Cathode BRTM and ISA 2000 AB Cathode. The ISA BR cathode is a lower resistance cathode that has proven to enhance operating efficiencies. The AB cathode was designed to improve stripping inefficiencies in the ISA 2000 technology. These developments have now had time to mature and their long term performance will be discussed. Rising material costs and the desire to extend the operating boundaries of the standard 316L cathode plate has triggered a number of significant advances. These involve the use of different stainless steels as alternatives in some operational situations. The technical aspects and results of commercial trials on this development will also be discussed in this paper.
